The situation on the frontline remains challenging and tense. Despite suffering significant losses inflicted by our defenders, the enemy continues its attempts to breach the defenses of Ukrainian forces.
On 4 January, there were 107 combat clashes.
Artillery shelling from russian territory affected areas near the settlements of Oleksandrivka, Pokrovka, Yastrubshchyna, and Luhivka in Sumy oblast; Tymofiivka and Vidrodzhenske in Kharkiv oblast.
Towards Kharkiv, russian occupiers twice assaulted the defensive positions of Ukrainian forces near Starytsia. Our defenders repelled one attack, while another battle is ongoing. Additionally, the enemy launched airstrikes on the settlements of Mali Prokhody, Vovchanski Khutory, and Okhrimivka.
Towards Kupiansk, the enemy made three active assaults on the positions of Ukrainian units near the settlement of Zahryzove.
Towards Lyman, the invading forces launched 11 attacks on Ukrainian positions near Pershotravneve, Nadiia, Novoserhiivka, Makiivka, Novoyehorivka, Yampilivka, Terny, Hryhorivka, and in Serebrianka Forest. Four clashes are ongoing at this moment.
Towards Kramatorsk, Ukrainian defenders repelled seven enemy attacks in the vicinity of Chasiv Yar, Bila Hora, Klishchiivka, and Stupochky. One combat engagement is still ongoing.
Towards Toretsk, russians attempted to dislodge Ukrainian units from their positions near Toretsk, Dyliivka, and Shcherbynivka. The Defense Forces repelled five enemy assaults, and two battles are currently ongoing.
Towards Pokrovsk, the enemy has made 30 attempts to push Ukrainian defenders from their positions in the viicnity of Myrne, Tymofiivka, Baranivka, Myroliubivka, Promin, Lysivka, Zelenyi, Novyi Trud, Pokrovsk, Pishchane, Shevchenko, Solone, Novooleinivka, Kotlyne, and Novovasylivka. The Defense Forces are holding their ground and have repelled 22 enemy attacks so far. Enemy losses are being clarified.
Towards Kurakhove, fighting continues near Serebne, Petropavlivka, Kostiantynopil, Kurakhove, and Dachne. According to updated information, nine enemy attacks have been repelled today, and five are ongoing.
Towards Vremivka, two enemy attacks are underway, with a total of 11 attempts by the enemy to advance near Dachne and Yantarne. The enemy also launched an airstrike on Temyrivka and Burlatske, dropping eight guided aerial bombs.
Towards Orikhiv, Ukrainian defenders successfully repelled an enemy attempt to advance near the settlement of Novodanylivka.
Towards Kursk, Ukrainian defenders repelled nine enemy attacks, and five clashes are ongoing. Additionally, the enemy launched four airstrikes using nine guided bombs and conducted 140 artillery shellings on our positions and settlements.
Towards Siversk, Kherson, and Huliaipole, the enemy did not conduct active operations.
MP Yaroslav Zhelezniak says that Bill No. 9256 on strengthening control over the gambling market has been signed. Gambling advertising is also prohibited.
According to the Ministry of Energy, in the past 24 hours, energy workers managed to restore electricity supply to 7,022 people.
Recent war events in the east of Ukraine
Kharkiv oblast
Oleh Syniehubov, Head of Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, informs that from Kupiansk and Borova, rescuers evacuated another 30 people, including one child.

Towards Kupiansk, the situation remains challenging, with local authorities striving to evacuate as many people as possible from dangerous areas.
In the village of Kivsharivka, Kupiansk region, a 74-year-old man was killed due to an enemy attack.
At 10:45, a 56-year-old man was injured as a result of an FPV drone strike and has been hospitalized in Zapadne village, Kupiansk region.
At 08:55, a 55-year-old man was injured due to shelling in Kozacha Lopan village, Kharkiv region.
On the Kharkiv front, our forces repelled two enemy attacks near Vovchansk.
According to Andrii Besedin, Head of Kupiansk City Military Administration, the enemy continuously strikes the territory of the community using mortars, artillery, MLRSs, and guided aerial bombs. FPV drones are being used extensively, targeting logistics routes and main roads, preventing the delivery of humanitarian aid and the free movement of civilians.
According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, on January 4, artillery shelling from russian territory affected areas near the villages of Tymofiivka and Vidrodzhenske in Kharkiv oblast.
According to Kharkiv Regional SES Office, as a result of the shelling of Bohodukhiv, a large-scale fire occurred. russians shelled the town on January 3. A fire broke out on an area of 300 square meters after an enemy UAV struck the roof of a warehouse building of a local agricultural enterprise. The fire was promptly extinguished by units of the State Emergency Service.

Donetsk oblast
According to Ukrainian military statements reported by Reuters, russian forces continue their advance on Pokrovsk, attempting to encircle it from the south and cut off supply routes for Ukrainian troops.

The capture of the road and rail hub in eastern Donetsk oblast could create significant challenges for the Ukrainian army on the eastern front and allow russia to strengthen and push its frontline further west.
Viktor Trehubov, Spokesperson for the operational-tactical group Khortytsia, says that Pokrovsk direction remains the hottest spot, where russians conducted 34 shelling attacks (in the past 24 hours) and attempted to breach Ukrainian defenses south of Pokrovsk.
Pokrovsk, home to a coal mine that serves as the sole supplier of coking coal for Ukraine’s once-mighty steel industry, had a pre-war population of about 60,000. Ukrainian estimates suggest that approximately 11,000 residents remain in the town.
According to Viktor Trehubov, russian forces are attempting to block supply routes by sending small groups of soldiers to settlements south of Pokrovsk.
Luhansk oblast
The RMA reports that on 3 January, the invaders tried to storm Belohorivka twice, but failed again. The russian army also attacked near Nadiia, Makiivka, and Tverdokhlibove. They fired on frontline villages with cannon artillery and used 96 unmanned aerial vehicles.
Almost 90% of reports about destroyed housing in Luhansk oblast came from residents of Siverskodonetsk region. Of the 48,611 reports submitted by Luhansk oblast residents about damaged and destroyed housing by russians, 43,597 came from residents of cities and villages in the region.
Since January 1, the so-called “lpr” has begun fining drivers for not having a compulsory third-party liability insurance policy – that is, car insurance. The first fine is up to 800 rubles, repeated ones – up to five thousand.
In Privil, locals have been living without electricity, centralized water supply for more than 2.5 years and heat their homes themselves. The occupiers are not even going to spectacularly restore the front-line city. However, for the New Year, the Russians have set up a festive photo zone. Anyone can take a photo, but only if they have a charged smartphone. The nearest place to power gadgets is in Lysychansk.
What is happening now in the north of Ukraine
Kyiv oblast
Kyiv Military District reported that an attack by enemy UAVs lasted in oblast through the night. The fall of debris was recorded in open areas outside of settlements. No hits to residential or critical infrastructure were recorded.
3 January, the RMA informed that russian drones attacked Kyiv oblast several times. In the afternoon, as a result of one of the russian attacks, a man in intensive care received a shrapnel wound. A 22-year-old girl who was injured in a drone attack in Fastiv district died in hospital. Thus, the death toll from the russian attack on 3 January increased to two. Five people were injured.
As a result of the attack by russian drones on 3 January, law enforcement officers recorded damage to 17 private houses, an outbuilding, a garage, two vehicles, a power line, a transformer and two car washes.

DTEK’s Kyiv Regional Power Grids reported that during the day on 3 January, power engineers restored electricity to more than 4,000 homes that were cut off as a result of the attack by russian drones on 2 January. It is noted that the remains of the downed drones damaged power facilities, which led to the de-energisation of 4,163 families in Vasylkiv district.
In Kyiv, rescuers have completed the removal of rubble on the 6th floor of a residential building in Pechersk district, which was damaged during an enemy attack on 1 January. According to the Department of Municipal Security of the Kyiv City State Administration, rescue units dismantled the destroyed floor slabs weighing 7 to 19 tonnes, cleared the rubble and dismantled emergency structures. A total of 382 rescuers and 117 units of SES equipment were involved in the relief efforts.
The Regional Military Administration announced that in Borodyanka, another apartment building at 306 Tsentralna Street was restored at the expense of UNITED24. In the spring of 2022, the building was heavily damaged by russian shells and a fire. In total, 18 apartment buildings are being restored in Kyiv oblast thanks to UNITED24. UNDP’s GTP is providing technical oversight of all reconstruction processes.
Zhytomyr oblast
The RMA reported that the development of rehabilitation services remains a priority in 2025, especially in the context of the growing needs of the military, veterans and civilians. The opening of a mobile rehabilitation module at the Ovruch City Hospital was One of the oblast’s significant achievements in 2024. This modern and technologically advanced space provides long-term and sub-acute rehabilitation services for military personnel, combatants and people with persistent disabilities.
For Zhytomyr oblast, the growing demand for mental health rehabilitation services has become a new challenge. Berdychiv City Hospital has the first mental health centre in the region. Its work covers a wide range of services, including individual and group therapy, art therapy. Special attention is paid to the military, their families and internally displaced persons.
Zhytomyr City Council reported that an IDP family that moved to Zhytomyr from the Bakhmut district of Donetsk oblast received temporary housing in a modular house in the village of Veresy. The house is adapted for people with disabilities.
Sumy oblast
According to Sumy Regional Military Administration, russian forces launched a guided aerial bomb strike on Svesa community in Shostka region. The bomb hit a multi-storey residential building in Svesa, completely destroying one section. Sumy police reported that five people were injured in the attack, including two two-year-old children. Emergency rescue operations are ongoing, and it is suspected that people may still be trapped under the rubble.

The RMA reported that on 4 January, anti-aircraft gunners in Sumy oblast shot down 18 enemy Shahed drones. Since the beginning of 2025, the region’s air defense units have destroyed 35 russian drones.
During night and morning, russians carried out 3 shelling attacks on border areas and settlements in Sumy oblast, resulting in 8 explosions. According to Sumy RMA russian forces dropped six mines on the territory of Bilopillia community and two VOG grenades from UAVs on the territory of Krasnopillia community.
Sumy Oblast Police informed that as a result of russian shelling over the past day, on 3 January, five people were injured. The occupiers attacked 43 settlements in the oblast, damaging six private houses, two vehicles, and an enterprise building.
Sumy City Council reported that due to the russian drone strike on Pishchane in Sumy community on the evening of 3 January, three people were injured, and 11 private houses were damaged. According to Artem Kobzar, Acting Head of Sumy Community, a russian Shahed drone was loaded with shrapnel.
Communities of Sumy region received modern charging stations to provide backup power. This equipment was secured through a memorandum between the Regional Military Administration and the company Chemonics, within the framework of the USAID project Strengthening Public Trust (UCBI-4). A total of 22 portable charging stations were handed over to the leaders of territorial communities in the region.
Chernihiv oblast
According to Dmytro Bryzhynskyi, Head of Chernihiv Military Administration, on 3 January, the enemy launched a missile strike on a residential area on the outskirts of Chernihiv. As a result, two houses were completely destroyed, and 28 others were damaged. A 72-year-old civilian man was killed, and seven people were injured, two of whom remain in hospital.
The city council reported that the rescue operation at the site of the airstrike in Chernihiv was completed on 4 January. Electricity and gas supply in the affected area have been restored. The windows of the damaged houses at the site of the missile strike are planned to be covered with film and OSB boards. Charitable foundations will be involved in providing assistance.
Viacheslav Chaus, Head of Chernihiv Regional Military Administration, informed that on 3 January, russian forces launched a missile strike on Chernihiv using three ballistic Iskander-M missiles. Some of the missiles contained cluster munitions, leaving potentially dangerous unexploded elements near the impact site. Pyrotechnic teams are working to ensure the area is safe.
Among the victims of the missile strike was Oleksyi Halionka, an associate professor of the Department of Philological Disciplines and Teaching Methods at Chernihiv Oblast Institute of Postgraduate Education named after Ushynsky. He suffered a fatal shrapnel wound to the head. According to Vasyl Bilohura, Head of Chernihiv City Education Department, Halionka’s house was destroyed by russian shelling in March 2022, forcing him to live in adapted housing.

According to the North Operational Command, on 3 January, russian forces attacked Chernihiv Oblast by Shahed-type attack drones and guided aerial bombs, damaging nine private homes, two industrial facilities, and two trucks.
- Korukivka Region, Kholmy village: A Shahed drone strike damaged four private homes.
- Stari Borovychi village: A Shahed drone attack damaged two industrial facilities and two trucks.
- Semenivka town: Five private homes were damaged due to guided aerial bomb strikes.
Chernihiv Border Detachment reported that on 3 January, russian forces attacked four border communities in Chernihiv Oblast, targeting 15 border villages and towns:
Novhorod-Siverskyi Community
- Seven artillery strikes in Kamianska Sloboda.
- Two explosive devices dropped from drones in Bohdanove village.
Semenivka Community
- 25 BMP strikes and 16 mortar strikes in Medvedivka village.
- Four unguided air rockets and one explosive device dropped from a drone in Hremiachka village.
- One explosive device dropped from a drone and three FPV-drone strikes in Yanzhulivka village.
- Six mortar strikes and six artillery strikes in Zarichchia village.
- Eight mortar strikes in Karpovychi village.
- Eleven mortar strikes in Tymonovychi village.
- Two explosive devices dropped from drones in Leonivka village.
- One Lancet drone strike in Kovpynka village.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine
Dnipropetrovsk oblast
Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovsk Regional State Administration, says that at night and in the morning, the enemy continued to attack Nikopol region. They targeted the regional center with artillery, launched a kamikaze drone, and shelled it with a Grad rocket system. The fire department was damaged.
The occupiers are again terrorizing the civilian population of Nikopol region. Over the course of the day, they struck the district about a dozen times, using artillery and kamikaze drones. As a result of the enemy attacks, three people were injured in Nikopol. A 71-year-old man was hospitalized in serious condition. Women aged 61 and 68 will receive treatment at home. The enemy targeted the regional center, Marhanets and Myriv communities. Seventeen private houses, five farm buildings, passenger cars, and a bus, as well as businesses, infrastructure, and a power line were damaged.
Vinnytsia oblast
In Vinnytsia, serviceman Myroslav Ziubanov, who voluntarily took up arms to defend Ukraine, was paid tribute to. He was killed on July 31 during an assault near the village of Vodiane in Donetsk oblast. Myroslav Ziubanov was 49 years old.
Poltava oblast
Last year, 37 veteran assistants began working in Poltava oblast. They provide services in communities across all regions. These specialists assist, in particular, veterans returning from military service to civilian life. One-third of the specialists are war veterans themselves.
Cherkasy oblast
Ihor Taburets, At night, Head of Cherkasy Regional Military Administration, informs that defenders shot down 6 russian UAVs.
Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine
Zaporizhzhia oblast
As reported by the State Emergency Service (SES), today, a fire broke out in Stepnohirsk due to russian shelling. A residential building covering an area of 35 sq m was on fire, but rescuers managed to extinguish it.
According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Defence Forces repelled 5 russian attacks near Novoandriivka, Novodarivka and Nove Pole.
Ivan Fedorov, Head of the RMA, stated that on 3 January, russian forces launched 341 strikes on 13 towns and villages in Zaporizhzhia oblast. This included 14 airstrikes targeting Stepnohirsk, Lobkove, Piatykhatky, Mali Shcherbaky, Novoandriivka and Novodanylivka.
Mykolaiv oblast
Vitalii Kim, Head of the RMA, reported that today, russian forces attacked the waters of Ochakiv community by an FPV drone. There were no casualties reported.
According to the RMA, on 3 January, russian forces attacked Kutsurub community twice by FPV drones and artillery. Also, mortar fire targeted the waters of Ochakiv community.
Odesa oblast
As reported by the Ukrainian Navy, as of the morning of 4 January, russia has deployed one ship carrying Kalibr cruise missiles to combat duty in the Black Sea. No russian ships are currently present in the Sea of Azov.
Kherson oblast
According to the RMA, russian forces dropped an explosive from a drone on a man in Antonivka in the evening. He is in critical condition at the hospital. This marks the sixth person injured by drone attacks in Kherson’s suburbs since the morning.
A 48-year-old resident of Kindiika, a suburb of Kherson, sustained blast injuries and shrapnel wounds to his legs when russian forces dropped explosives from a UAV. He was hospitalised in moderate condition.
In the day, russian forces attacked Antonivka again by a drone, injuring a 68-year-old man who was hospitalised.
In the morning, the russian military attacked a 71-year-old man by a drone in Antonivka, a suburb of Kherson, injuring him, a 43-year-old man who sustained an explosive injury, a broken leg and shrapnel wounds, and a 62-year-old woman who also sustained a broken leg. All the victims were hospitalised.
According to the SES, overnight, a house in Kherson suburb caught fire due to a russian shell. Rescuers had to retreat to a safe area before resuming firefighting due to UAV threats. The fire was extinguished.
According to the RMA, a dormitory at the Kherson Agrarian-Economic University was damaged by russian shelling overnight. Windows on all floors and the roof were damaged.
Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of the RMA, stated that russian forces shelled 40 settlements in Kherson oblast on 3 January, targeting social infrastructure. The attacks damaged 3 apartment buildings, 20 private houses, a gas pipeline, a bus and several cars. 8 people were injured.
According to activists from the Yellow Ribbon resistance movement, in the temporarily occupied territories of Kherson oblast, elementary school students are forced to testify against their parents and neighbors. Psychologists from the occupation police are questioning children from grades 1-5 about their families’ political positions and attitudes toward russian troops.

Volyn oblast
The 1st Rifle Battalion of the 100th Separate Mechanized Brigade received 2 DJI Mavic 3 Pro (RC) quadcopters from Lutsk community.
Zakarpattia oblast
The hospital in Pielgrzymow, the Czech Republic and Svaliavsk City Hospital will become partners. The corresponding memorandum on cooperation is planned to be signed during the next visit of the delegation of the Vysochyna region to Zakarpattia oblast.
Ivano-Frankivsk oblast
In Ivano-Frankivsk community, military personnel without the status of combatant will receive UAH 5,000. In total, in 2024, such assistance was approved for 479 military personnel in the amount of UAH 2,319,000.
Lviv oblast
In Lviv, the house on Kokorudzy street, which was hit by russian shelling on 4 September last year, has been completely repaired. The roof was restored here with funds from the city budget, and the restoration of the entrance gate was completed before the New Year. All works were carried out at the expense of the city budget of Lviv. UAH 426.600 was spent from the budget on the restoration of all elements of the building damaged by the enemy (the roof, the entrance gate and compensation to residents for damaged windows).
Rivne oblast
In Rivne oblast, an algorithm of actions in case of damage to gas networks was worked out. Special tactical training of civil defense services was held in the oblast. Using the example of one of the stations, the algorithm of actions during damage to gas distribution networks as a result of a missile attack was worked out. Gas workers, rescue workers, energy workers, the police, and representatives of other structures took part in the training.
Today, there are 3 Mental Health Centers, 9 Vitality Centers, and 4 Psychosocial Support Centers operating in the region within the Psychosocial Support in Ukraine Project PRO_MentalHealth. In addition, there are 10 “green rooms” and 37 specialized support services for victims of domestic violence and/or gender-based violence.
Ternopil oblast
Ternopil community sent 5 DJI Mavic 3 Pro quadcopters and 30 K7S FPV drones to the military.
Khmelnytskyi oblast
During air alarm signals, the Air Defense Forces destroyed 3 enemy UAVs of the Shahed type. There were no injuries or deaths. As a result of the attack, the windows of 4 residential buildings were damaged, as well as the windows of the administrative building of one of the enterprises.
Chernivtsi oblast
Before Christmas and New Year holidays, 486 children of deceased Defenders received UAH 5,000 each. UAH 2.43m was allocated for this from the regional budget as part of the regional program of social support for defenders and their family members for 2024.
International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)
Ukraine and Great Britain held the 5th round of negotiations on concluding an agreement on the transition to a stronger and deeper partnership. Approval of the draft document is at the final stage.
Pope Francis sent an ambulance and medical equipment for Ukraine.
Kyivstar signed an agreement with Elon Musk’s Starlink on introduction of satellite communications in Ukraine. According to Kyivstar, this will allow the company’s customers to use space communication in conditions where terrestrial communication is impossible. The 1st text messaging services using the new technology will be introduced in the fourth quarter of 2025. In the future, the company also will expand its voice and data transmission capabilities.
