It has been the 894 th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

The Ukrainian Defense Forces are holding back the advance of russian occupiers, while terrorists continue to destroy Ukrainian cities and villages with airstrikes and artillery. 

On 5 August, there were 64 combat engagements on the front line, with the fiercest fighting occurring towards Pokrovsk and Toretsk.

The border areas of Chernihiv and Sumy oblasts have come under enemy fire, with strikes hitting the settlements of Sopich, Popivka, Taratutine, Iskryskivshchyna, Boyaro-Lezhachi, Pozhnya, and Karpovychi.

Overall, since the beginning of the day, there has been one combat engagement towards Kharkiv near Vovchansk.

Towards Kupyansk, russian forces attempted to assault Ukrainian positions four times near Stelmakhivka, Berestove, and Petropavlivka. Ukrainian defenders repelled three attacks, with another battle ongoing.

Towards Lyman, the enemy attacked in the vicinities of Makiivka, Nevske, and Terny, resulting in five combat engagements so far today.

The enemy continues to try to break through Ukrainian defenses towards Siversk near Verkhniokamianske, Ivano-Darivka, Pereizne, and Vyiimka, conducting seven assault actions, five of which were repelled by Ukrainian defenders, with ongoing battles.

Towards Kramatorsk, russian forces have attempted to push Ukrainian units from their positions four times since the beginning of the day. Ukrainian soldiers repelled two assault actions near Chasiv Yar and Ivanivske, with two more attacks ongoing.

Towards Toretsk, supported by bomber aviation, the enemy attacked Ukrainian positions 15 times. Currently, seven engagements are ongoing near Toretsk and Niu- York. The enemy dropped ten guided aerial bombs on Toretsk today.

The situation remains tense towards Pokrovsk. Fierce battles are taking place in the vicinities of Kalynove, Vozdvyzhenka, Novooleksandrivka, Ivanivka, Zhelanne, Novoselivka Persha, Karlivka, and Yasnobrodivka. The enemy has made 21 attempts to storm Ukrainian positions, with fighting ongoing in ten locations.

Towards Kurakhove, the occupiers have attacked Ukrainian units twice since the beginning of the day, attempting to advance near Heorhiivka and Kostyantynivka.

Towards Vremivka, two enemy assault actions towards Vodiane and Rozdolne were repelled. Near Robotyne, the occupiers tried to advance once but were met with fierce resistance. The enemy also used aviation to strike the vicinities of Zalyznychne and Novoandriivka.

The aggressor made two unsuccessful attempts to storm Ukrainian positions towards Kherson.

The Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is taking all necessary measures to hold back the enemy’s advance and stabilise the situation.

In the Donetsk region, children are being forcibly evacuated from more than 10 settlements due to constant airstrikes. Children with their parents or legal guardians will be evacuated from several villages in the Hrodivska, Novohrodivska, Illinivska, and Kurakhivska communities. A total of 744 children and their families will be evacuated.

Dmytro Pletenchuk, the spokesperson of the Ukrainian Navy, reported that there are five military airfields left in Crimea, two of which no longer have aircraft.

Ukraine has created its first digital Olympic team to honor the memory of fallen athletes. Ukraine has lost almost 500 athletes who could not fulfill their Olympic dreams due to russian aggression. The Revived project, created by BBDO GmbH, uses artificial intelligence to “revive” the faces and potential of deceased athletes, fulfilling their shared dream of being represented at the Olympic Games. Among the heroes of The Revived are boxer Maksym Galinichev, cyclist Anastasiia Honcharova, fencer Fedir Yepifanov, weightlifter Oleksandr Pelechenko, swimmer Nikita Zasiadko, and footballer Mykola Zhydkov. The project was implemented with the consent of the families of the deceased to honor their memory and remind the world of the losses Ukraine is enduring.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

At 12:49am, the russians attacked Vasyshcheve village of Bezliudivka community, Kharkiv region. According to the RMA, civilian infrastructure was damaged as a result of the fall of the UAV remains.

Yesterday 11 russian Shaheds were shot down and 137 occupiers neutralised in Kharkiv oblast.

Yesterday at 11:57pm, russians attacked Koviahy village of Valky community, Bohodukhiv region. Shahed UAV fragments hit civilian infrastructure.

At 9:20am, russians attacked Kruhliakivka village of Kupiansk region. Two houses were damaged as a result of the rocket attack.

In Nova Ivanivka village of Lozova region, a 47-year-old man died as a result of an explosion on an unexploded ordnance.

Towards Kharkiv, the enemy continued assault operations. There were 11 combat engagements near Hlyboke, Lyptsi, Tykhe and Vovchansk.

Towards Kupiansk, the number of combat engagements increased to six over the day. Defence forces repelled enemy assaults near five different settlements. The enemy focused its actions towards Petropavlivka, launching two attacks.

Kharkiv oblast continues to prepare for the heating season. According to Serhii Mahdysiuk, Counsellor to the head of the Regional Administration, the heating sector is currently 52% ready, the water and sewerage sector is 54% ready, and the housing stock is 58% ready.

In Izium, the restoration of infrastructure damaged as a result of russia’s armed aggression continues. Since the beginning of the full-scale war, almost 80% of the city’s infrastructure has been damaged. Currently, emergency repair works are financed from the local budget and state subventions. Priority is given to repairing buildings where people continue to live. Six apartment buildings in Izium and 4 buildings in Milova village, Izium region, have been repaired and are being repaired. The building of Izium City Council, damaged by the russians, is also being restored. The works include insulation of the facades, repair of entrance groups and common areas, restoration of the roof, window and door blocks.

Donetsk oblast

The General Staff reported that the russian army has concentrated its efforts in the fighting near Niu-York and Toretsk. Yesterday 18 battles were recorded here. Also russia attacked the city and its suburbs 14 times with aircraft.

 Most of the fighting remains towards Pokrovsk. Almost half of the 30 attacks repelled by the Armed Forces yesterday were towards Zhelanne and Novooleksandrivka.  

 Also russians became more active near Chasiv Yar, towards Kramatorsk. There were 15 russian attacks in the area over the day.  

 Yesterday the invaders shelled 14 settlements in Donetsk oblast, killing one person and injuring three others. Police recorded 2,878 russian strikes over the day.

Explosions were heard near Lyman, Novohrodivka, Toretsk, Ukrainsk, Hrodivka, Novoekonomichne, Vesele, Vovchenka, Dalne, Mykolaivka, Novyi Komar, Rozdolne, Trudove and Uspenivka.

83 civilian objects were damaged.

The russians hit Hrodivka with a FAB-250 bomb, killing one person and injuring another. A private house was destroyed.

The russian troops fired at Ukrainian troops with Smerch multiple rocket launchers and artillery. As a result of the shelling, a civilian was injured, 6 private houses, a medical facility and a garage were damaged.

In Vesele, the invaders hit a loader with a UAV, injuring a civilian.

Also russia dropped four UMPB D-30 SN bombs on Rozdolne, destroying 9 houses, an educational institution and an administrative building.

As a result of enemy strikes, 8 houses were damaged in Trudove, 1 apartment building and 8 private houses in Novoekonomichne.

Valerii Matiushenko spent seven years in russian captivity in the territory of “donetsk people’s republic”. He was abducted by the russians on 15 July 2017, tortured in “Izoliatsiia” prison, eventually “accused” of collaborating with the SBU and sentenced to 10 years. On 28 June 2024, 59-year-old Matiushenko, along with Olena Pekh and eight other civilians, was returned to Ukraine.

Luhansk oblast

Yesterday russians attacked Nevske, Makiivka and Stelmakhivka. According to the Regional Mililtary Administration, they struck Makiivka twice with multiple rocket launchers. The occupiers fired artillery at two villages in Krasnorichensk community and used 76 drones.

Fierce fighting is taking place near Nevske and Makiivka. According to the RMA, all enemy attacks have been repelled, but it is extremely dangerous to stay in the frontline villages of Luhansk oblast. Once again, work is underway with the population to evacuate. Despite the fact that the settlements are under constant enemy attack, people are not quick to agree.

In Pryvillia, a town near Lysychansk, about 300 civilians remain out of the 7,000 who lived there before the full-scale invasion. For more than two years, they have been waiting for the restoration of communications promised by the russians. Currently, they have access only to water, which is periodically delivered.

The so-called “lpr” has no railway connection with russia. Trains from russia are not ready to run even to the cities occupied 10 years ago. The occupation authorities cite the lack of permits from the FSB, although their neighbours in the “dpr”, where it is more dangerous, can boast of better news. They say that everything is technically ready, but at the same time, they are going to repair about 15km of track over the next six months.

Forest fires are raging again in the occupied Luhansk oblast. They burn 100 hectares a day. The occupiers do not have the forces and means to extinguish them.

There are fewer and fewer locals in the leadership of the so-called “lpr” and their places are being taken by russians.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

Ruslan Kravchenko, Head of the RMA, announced that the enemy had once again tried to attack Kyiv oblast using UAVs. The alert was announced twice and lasted almost all night. There were no hits to residential or critical infrastructure. There were no casualties. The fall of debris was recorded outside of settlements in the field.

The National Police of Kyiv oblast reported that agricultural machinery exploded on the territory of Baryshivka community. Law enforcement officers found that the driver of the tractor, while mowing the grass, hit a hand-held fragmentation grenade, which exploded. The driver was not injured.

Bucha mayor Anatolii Fedoruk announced that the Minister of Justice of Japan visited Kyiv oblast. Ryuji Koizumi came to Ukraine to deepen cooperation in the areas of judicial reform and anti-corruption. During his visit to the oblast, the Minister visited Bucha and Irpin, two cities that suffered the most during the russian invasion. 

Representatives of Kyiv oblast expressed their gratitude to the partners for their support in reconstruction, assistance to the population and constant attention to the needs of oblast.

On 9 August, the Ukrainian Women’s Guard will conduct a training course on “Explosive Ordnance Risk Education” at Borodianka military housing facility. The participants will receive basic knowledge of the rules of safe behaviour that will protect their lives and the lives of their loved ones.

Mykola Kalashnyk, Head of Darnytsia District Military Administration, said that the Armed Forces of Ukraine received assistance from Kyiv. The FPV drones were sent to Ukrainian soldiers fighting in Lyman sector. The collection for 100 FPV drones with powerful batteries was closed by residents of Darnytskyi district.

On 4 August, Kyiv hosted the weekly action “Don’t be silent, captivity kills” in support of prisoners of war, including those from the Mariupol garrison and missing soldiers. About two hundred people gathered near the russian Embassy in Ukraine. Valeriia Subbotina, a Mariupol poet and member of the Azov regiment, nicknamed Nava, said that according to official figures, 900 Azov soldiers remain in russian captivity.

In Kyiv, members of the Invictus Games national team held their first open training session. The soldiers are preparing for Ukraine’s fifth international Invictus Games, which will take place in Canada in February 2025. The team members practised sitting volleyball, wheelchair basketball and winter sports.

The State Emergency Service of Kyiv oblast reported that a mural was created on the building of the restored fire station, which was damaged during the occupation of Borodyanka. Chernihiv firefighter Vitalii Voronoi decorated the tower with a mural, combining the image of a Cossack and a rescuer.

Zhytomyr oblast

A representative of Bereza community took part in a working visit to the Italian town of Marino. According to the RMA, at the end of the three-day meeting, a protocol on cooperation was signed, which should result in a twinning agreement between Bereza community and six Italian municipalities.

Zhytomyr oblast hosted races as part of the Active Parks – Locations of Healthy Ukraine social project. This year, more than 450 people of all ages, regardless of physical fitness, took part in the races at different distances. Among them were internally displaced persons, war veterans and people with disabilities.

Sumy oblast

At night and in the morning, the russians fired nine times at the border areas and settlements of Sumy oblast. A total of 36 explosions were recorded, including artillery and mortar attacks and the dropping of explosives from UAVs. Yunakivka, Bilopillia, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Nova Sloboda, Shalyhyne and Seredyna-Buda communities were under hostile fire.

On 4 August, the russian military fired 13 times in Sumy oblast. A total of 39 explosions were recorded. According to the regional military administration, 7 border communities were shelled.

Velyka Pysarivka community: an FPV drone attack (1 explosion) and grenade launcher attack (3 explosions) were carried out from the territory of the russian federation.

Esman community: 20 mines were dropped by russians on the territory of the community.

The enemy fired from artillery at Druzhbivka community (4 explosions) and Krasnopillia community (2 explosions).

Bilopillia community: an attack by FPV drones was recorded (1 explosion).

Khotyn community: small arms fire was recorded.

Yunakivka community: mortar shelling (1 explosion), FPV drone attack (2 explosions), artillery shelling (5 explosions) were recorded.

The State Emergency Service of Ukraine reported that 5,220 people have been rescued by the SES since the beginning of the enemy’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. During this period, 165,806 visits were made to eliminate the consequences of enemy shelling. 20,449 fires were extinguished. Psychological assistance was provided to 255,924 citizens.

The State Environmental Inspectorate of the oblast reported that over UAH 77m was caused by land contamination as a result of shelling of a civilian infrastructure facility in Shostka, which came under fire from russia last month.

In Sumy oblast, bomb squads destroyed 32 unexploded ordnance items found in Sumy, Okhtyrka, Konotop and Shostka regions last week. According to the State Emergency Service, 795 explosive devices have been found in oblast since the beginning of the year.  

Chernihiv oblast

The police in Chernihiv oblast reported that on the afternoon of 5 August, russians hit the household of a resident of a village in the border community of Novhorod-Siverskyi with an attack drone. The explosion damaged the roof and windows of the house, as well as the fence around it.

The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine reported that over the past day, russian troops attacked three border communities in Chernihiv oblast. A total of 33 explosions were recorded. Novhorod-Siverskyi community: 7 attacks with mortars and cannon artillery in the direction of Krasnyi Khutir and Hremiach. Semenivka community: 1 drop of explosive ordnance from a UAV) on the outskirts of Karpovychi village. Snovsk community: 25 mortar attacks in the area of Kliusy settlement.

Viacheslav Chaus, Head of Chernihiv RMA, said that over the past week, the enemy fired 33 times at 11 localities in Chernihiv oblast. A total of 104 explosions were recorded during this period, including 12 airstrikes using FPV drones. According to him, the enemy’s attacks damaged the residential infrastructure of the oblast.

Vadym Mysnyk, Spokesman of Siversk operational and tactical group, reported that russian troops have increased the use of FPV drones and strike drones to attack the border of Chernihiv and Sumy oblasts. According to him, the situation in the border area is tense, but fully controlled, as the russians have not changed their tactics for a long time. We are talking about systematic daily shelling of the border oblasts.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

From evening until night, the occupiers were shelling Nikopol region. Mostly from artillery as they launched about three dozen shells. They hit the regional centre, Marhanets, Pokrovsk and Myrove communities. One of the villages of Chervonohryhorivka community was hit by a kamikaze drone. A 70-year-old woman and a 26-year-old man were injured in Pokrovsk community. They will be treated at home. A cafe, shops, a private enterprise, 8 private houses, 6 outbuildings, 5 garages, 4 cars, three dozen solar panels, power lines and a gas pipeline were damaged.

Air defence forces were on alert in the oblast at night. The military shot down 2 enemy Shaheds.

Throughout the day, the enemy did not stop attacking Nikopol. They used artillery and kamikaze drones to attack the district centre, Marhanets and Pokrovsk communities. A 76-year-old man was injured in Nikopol. He will be treated at home. A private house and an outbuilding were damaged.

Vinnytsia oblast

​​According to the RMA, at night, air defence forces shot down four drones over Vinnytsia oblast.

 

Vasyl Marshuk, a defender from Vinnytsia oblast, was awarded the For Service and Valour, III Degree medal. This is not his first military award as earlier, Vasyl received the Cross of the 60th Mechanized Brigade medal.

Kirovohrad oblast

Andrii Raikovych, Head of the Air Defence of Ukraine, informed that at night in Kirovohrad oblast, air defence forces shot down drones used by the russian military to attack Ukraine.

Poltava oblast

Commander of the Air Force Mykola Oleshchuk reported that air defence was operating in Poltava oblast at night. A UAV was shot down in the oblast.

Trains are still being delayed due to the shelling of the railway in Poltava oblast on 4 August. Trains travelling from Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk and Vorokhta to Kharkiv and Kramatorsk are affected.

Cherkasy oblast

In Cherkasy, the funeral of the deceased defender Andrii Kilchevskyi was held. The soldier had been missing since April 2022. Andrii was a driver of a rifle squad who was killed in action on 29 April 2022 near Popasna, Luhansk oblast.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Yesterday, on 4 August, the occupiers launched 472 attacks on 8 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast. The enemy carried out 3 airstrikes on Lobkove and Malynivka. 293 UAVs of various modifications attacked Huliaipole, Novoandriivka, Robotyne, Mala Tokmachka, Levadne, and Malynivka. Six attacks with MLRS targeted Huliaipole and Mala Tokmachka. There were 170 artillery strikes on the territory of Huliaipole, Zaliznychne, Novoandriivka, Robotyne, Mala Tokmachka, Malynivka and Levadne. Three reports of housing destruction were received.

The General Staff reported that the occupiers attempted to advance once towards Robotyne but faced a fierce repel. Additionally, the enemy launched airstrikes at Zaliznychne and Novoandriivka.

Mykolaiv oblast

In the evening of 4 August, at 18:55, the enemy shelled the waters of Ochakiv community with mortars. There were no casualties.

Odesa oblast

As reported at 6am on 5 August, there is one carrier of Kalibr cruise missiles with a total salvo of up to 4 missiles in the Black Sea. There are no enemy ships in the Azov Sea. There are 2 enemy ships in the Mediterranean Sea, one of which is a carrier of Kalibr cruise missiles with a total salvo of up to 16 missiles.

Yesterday, 9 ships passed through the Kerch Strait into the Black Sea and 6 ships into the Azov Sea in the interests of the russian federation.

Kherson oblast

This morning, the russian army struck Dniprovskyi district of Kherson. As a result of the attack, a resident sustained explosive and closed craniocerebral injuries, a concussion, and a shoulder contusion.

Yesterday, enemy forces attacked 10 settlements in Kherson oblast. Kherson, Antonivka, Sadove, Stanislav, Veletenske, Dariivka, Prydniprovske, Blahovishchenske, Beryslav, and Burhunka suffered from the combined attacks. The police recorded damage to 18 objects: 10 private houses, four apartment buildings, three cars, and solar panels. Five people were injured due to russian aggression.

Today, a resident of Beryslav sought medical help. She was injured in a russian attack on 2 August, when russian military dropped explosives from a drone on her house. The 43-year-old woman was diagnosed with a blast injury and a concussion.

The Defense Forces of the South eliminated 80 occupiers and 47 units of weapons and military equipment over the past day. They hit one UAV control point, two UAV launchers, four ammunition storage sites, six bunkers, one firing position, and one generator.

As part of the “Shoulder to Shoulder” project, builders from Rivne oblast have restored 178 private houses in Kochubeivka community over the past year. Specifically, brigades worked in the villages of Zahradivka, Kochubeivka, and Orlove. In the second stage, Rivne builders will repair 296 residential buildings and 3 social infrastructure objects.

Thanks to the Caritas Beryslav charity organisation, residents of the Novoraisk and Velyka Oleksandrivka communities received over 80,000 liters of drinking water. The issue of providing clean water remains urgent in the de-occupied communities of Kherson oblast due to the terrorist attack on Kakhovka HPP.

Volunteer medics visited the Vysokopillia community to provide assistance to local residents. Initiated by the Fortitude UA charity fund, a medical team visited six settlements in the community: Novovoznesenske, Novomykolaivka, Novopetrivka, Maryine, Zarichne, and Arkhanhelske. During the week, specialists examined and consulted over 700 patients, providing them with necessary medications and glasses as needed.

Volyn oblast

Zakarpattia oblast

In Uzhhorod, the TOP GUN UZHHOROD charity run was held in support of Air Force units. Residents of Uzhhorod and guests of the city covered two distances – 2.2km and 5.8km, and everyone could join the race online. The race in the city became the 2nd in a series of races on aviation topics, the 1st was held in Khust, the next one will host the Irshava relay. The purpose of the TOP GUN races is to draw the attention of interested people to the needs of military aviation. All collected registration fees will be transferred to the needs of aviation brigades of the Air Force of Ukraine.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Thousands of pilgrims gathered for the 12th All-Ukrainian Patriarchal Requiem in Krylos, which was led by Head of the UGCC His Beatitude Sviatoslav. In front of the Galician miracle-working icon of the Mother of God, together with families of killed and missing Heroes, they prayed for victory and peace in Ukraine, for our valiant army, which now stands in defence of the Ukrainian people.

Lviv oblast

According to the volunteer community Medical-Psychological Help, whose volunteers have been at Lviv Railway Station since the first days of the war, from 29 July to 5 August, 101 people arrived in Lviv oblast. Of them, 47 are disabled, so they needed an escort. Volunteers also receive many requests for information from those who come independently and need accommodation.

Rivne oblast

Rivne Oblast continues to help in the reconstruction of Kherson Oblast, destroyed by the enemy. The region takes care of the de-occupied villages of the Kochubey territorial community. For more than a year, the Rivne region transferred UAH 8.4 million for the implementation of restoration works. With this money, the restoration of 178 residential buildings was completed. Works are ongoing within the framework of the Presidential initiative “Side by Side”. Currently, the region is preparing for the implementation of the second phase of the project. For this purpose, 296 residential buildings and 3 objects of social infrastructure have already been inspected.

Ternopil oblast

9 children from Ternopil oblast, whose parents were killed in the war, went missing or are in captivity, went on vacation to the Polish city of Tarnobrzeg. The holiday was organised as part of a project implemented by Ternopil RMA together with the Subcarpathian Voivodeship.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Serhii Tyurin, Head of Khmelnytskyi RMA, announced that the oblast completely got rid of russian markers in street names. In total, almost 2,500 toponymy objects were renamed.

Chernivtsi oblast

For the protection of the state, patriotism and exemplary performance of official duties, servicemen of Chernivtsi RMA were awarded the Military Unit 4815. The gratitude of the Head of Chernivtsi RMA was announced to servicemen Oleksandr Biletskyi, Andrii Chepeza, Yurii Kupka and Svitlana Binivska.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, announced that the first F-16 fighters are already in service with the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Denys Shmyhal, Prime Minister of Ukraine, announced that Ukraine received a $3.9bn grant from the US through the World Bank. This is the 1st tranche of direct budget support from the US in 2024. In total, Ukraine received $7.8bn in direct budget aid from the US this year, which will make it possible to confidently go through this financial period.

Ukraine will receive 20 F-16 fighters by the end of the year. The Economist reported that the first 10 F-16s out of a possible 79 arrived in Ukraine on 31 July.

The Embassy of Japan in Ukraine reported that Ryuji Koizumi, Minister of Justice, arrived on a visit to the Ukrainian capital to discuss the possibilities of further cooperation in the areas of judicial reform and combating corruption.

Valerii Zaluzhnyi, Ambassador of Ukraine to Great Britain, visited the Ukrainian Support Center in London. The Ukrainian Support Center is a cooperation initiative between the Ukrainian Catholic Diocese in London and the Union of Ukrainians in Great Britain.
