War in Ukraine today: latest news, 04 April 2026 (photo)

It has been the 1501st day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 4 pm:   

Since the beginning of the day, the aggressor has attacked the positions of the Defense Forces 55 times.

Artillery shelling of border areas continues. In Sumy oblast, the settlements of Korenok, Bachivsk, Iskryskivshchyna, Boiaro-Lezhachi, Rohizne, and Ulanove were affected; in Chernihiv oblast, Yasna Poliana and Kryvusha were hit.

  • Towards Northern Sloboda and Kursk: The adversary carried out 65 shellings of settlements and Ukrainian troops’ positions, seven of which involved the use of multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS).
  • Towards Southern Sloboda: The adversary stormed the positions of our units four times in the areas of Vovchansk, Okhrimivka, and Ambarne.
  • Towards Kupiansk: The adversary made four attempts to improve its tactical position in the areas of Kivsharivka and Novoosynove.
  • Towards Lyman: Ukrainian warriors repelled one attempt by the invaders to advance in the direction of the settlement of Lyman.
  • Towards Sloviansk and Kramatorsk: The enemy conducted no active operations.
  • Towards Kostiantynivka: The invaders carried out 17 attacks near Kostiantynivka, Pleshchiivka, Illinivka, Stepanivka, Novopavlivka, and Sofiivka. Four combat engagements are still ongoing.
  • Towards Pokrovsk: Since the start of the day, the occupiers have attempted to push our warriors from occupied positions 11 times in the areas of Bilytske, Rodynske, Pokrovsk, Udachne, Hryshyne, Myrnohrad, and Novomykolaivka. Two combat engagements are still ongoing.
  • Towards Oleksandrivka: The enemy went on the offensive seven times in the areas of Oleksandrohrad, Sichneve, and Verbove.
  • Towards Huliaipole: The Defense Forces successfully repelled seven enemy attacks in the areas of Varvarivka, Zaliznychne, Huliaipilske, Pryluky, Olenokostiantynivka, and Myrne. The enemy launched airstrikes in the areas of Vozdvyzhenske, Novoselivka, and Liubytske. One combat engagement is ongoing.
  • Towards Orikhiv: The enemy attempted to advance in the area of Stepove. Additionally, the adversary launched airstrikes on the areas of Stepnohirsk and Hryhorivka.
  • Towards Kherson: The enemy conducted two futile assault actions toward the Antonivka Bridge and near Bilohrudyi Island.

In other directions, there are no significant changes in the situation. No enemy attempts to advance have been recorded. Ukrainian troops continue to exhaust the enemy along the entire line of contact and in the rear.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

 Over the past day, there were 157 clashes along the front line. Towards Starytsia, Krasne Pershe, Tsehelne and Vilcha on the South-Slobozhanskyi axis, russian forces attempted five assaults. Towards Borivska Andriivka on the Kupiansk axis, they carried out eight attacks.

In the Nemyshlianskyi district of Kharkiv, three people were injured in a russian strike. A 70-year-old man sustained blast injuries, while two women experienced acute stress reactions. Two private houses were damaged.

Over the past day, russian strikes targeted Kharkiv and 11 settlements in the region. Four people were killed and 11 injured, including a child. In Kharkiv, a 72-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman were killed, while several others, including a 2-year-old girl, were injured. Fatalities and injuries were also reported in Kupiansk, Borova and Shevchenkove communities.

russian forces attacked the Shevchenkivskyi and Kyivskyi districts of Kharkiv with drones. Across the region, they used guided aerial bombs (KABs), Geran-2 and Molniya drones, FPV drones, as well as unidentified UAVs.

Civilian infrastructure was damaged. In Kharkiv, a medical facility, a pharmacy, vehicles and a civilian enterprise were hit. Damage was also recorded in Bohodukhiv, Kupiansk, Izium and Kharkiv districts.

A transit evacuation center in Lozova received 206 people over the past day. In total, 26,577 evacuees have been registered there since it began operating.

In Kharkiv, the memory of State Emergency Service rescuers Serhii Baidalinov, Vladyslav Lohinov and Volodymyr Matiushenko was honored. They were killed on April 4, 2024, during a repeated russian strike while rescuing people from under the rubble. City officials reminded that SES, police and emergency medical teams are always the first to arrive at the sites of attacks and, despite the danger, continue saving civilians.

Donetsk oblast

On April 3, police recorded 1,484 russian strikes along the front line and across residential areas of the region.

Six settlements came under fire. A total of 71 civilian objects were damaged, including 33 residential buildings.

Kramatorsk was hit 17 times, including 12 aerial bomb strikes. Six people were killed, among them a 16-year-old boy, and eight civilians were injured. Damage was reported to 20 apartment buildings, three educational institutions, a hotel, a service station, a boiler facility, an administrative building, garages and 16 civilian vehicles.

One person was injured in Mykolaivka, where an apartment building, four private houses and an educational facility were damaged.

Druzhkivka came under seven attacks, mostly by FPV drones. One person was injured, and five apartment buildings and an ambulance vehicle were damaged.

Private houses were also damaged in Sloviansk, Maiaky and Spasko-Mykhailivka.

Luhansk oblast

Over the past day, russian forces carried out seven assaults towards Lyman and Sloviansk, with fighting reported near five settlements. In Luhansk oblast, russian troops used mortars eight times, automatic grenade launchers twice, and also fired tube artillery. They also launched 22 drones at Ukrainian defensive positions.

In the so-called “lpr,” the occupation authorities have extended the deadline for re-registering vehicles with russian license plates until September 30. This applies both to cars with Ukrainian plates and those issued by the occupation administration after 2014. The previous deadline expired on December 31, 2025, but was extended due to low compliance among residents.

Additionally, starting from September 1, behavior grades will become mandatory in schools in the so-called “lpr.” These will be based on discipline, social activity, and “law-abiding behavior,” including participation in propaganda events.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

According to the State Emergency Service, on the morning of 4 April, russian forces attacked Kyiv with drones. This resulted in a fire break out on the first floor of a three-storey office and warehouse building. The fire has been extinguished.

Mykola Kalashnyk, head of the Kyiv Regional Military Administration, reported that a man born in 1974 was killed in Vyshneve on 3 April as a result of the russian attack on Kyiv ob;ast. Eight more people were injured, including a 14-year-old child. Four of the injured are currently in hospitals in the Fastiv and Obukhiv districts. In total, over 60 facilities have been damaged.

In the Fastiv district on 3 April, the russians attacked a veterinary clinic in Chabany. Animals that were undergoing treatment or being housed there were injured or killed. In addition, four private homes and a car were damaged.

In the Brovary district, a private house and outbuildings were damaged.

In the Bucha district, a nursery school and a secondary school, four high-rise buildings, four cars, a shop and a car repair workshop were damaged.

In the Obukhiv district, 40 properties were damaged: 5 businesses, 29 cars and one high-rise building, where a flat on the 5th floor was destroyed. Three private houses were also damaged.

The toilet paper manufacturer ‘Obukhiv 65’ has suspended operations due to the russian attack. The Kyiv Cardboard and Paper Mill has officially confirmed that it has again been hit by an enemy attack and has announced that, for safety reasons and to deal with the aftermath, production at the plant’s facilities has been temporarily suspended.

A russian drone crashed on the grounds of the National Military Memorial Cemetery. The incident occurred following a burial ceremony for unknown Defenders of Ukraine. The crash caused partial damage to an administrative building, water storage tanks, the perimeter fence and other infrastructure. The gravesites remained undamaged.

According to the Regional Military Administration, Kyiv Oblast is finalising the delivery of generators to provide backup power for mobile communication base stations in the region. The Fastiv and Bila Tserkva districts have received 77 generators to ensure the continuity of mobile communications. In total, 929 generators have already been handed over to local communities.

Zhytomyr oblast

As a result of an enemy air strike in the north of Zhytomyr oblast on 3 April, 18 buildings were destroyed, including 9 residential buildings. Over 100 residential buildings, more than 55 commercial premises and 2 shops were damaged. According to the head of the Regional Military Administration, Vitalii Bunechko, as of the evening of 3 April, a 70-year-old woman had died as a result of the russian shelling. Rescue operations at the scene are ongoing.

Serhiy Koverdun, Director General of Korosten Central City Hospital, reported at 13:25  that seven people, including three children, were admitted to hospital as a result of an enemy air strike on 3 April in the north of Zhytomyr oblast.

According to the Regional State Administration, 364 internally displaced persons in Zhytomyr oblast have been provided with housing with the support of partners. Projects to build and fit out housing for displaced persons in the oblast are being implemented in collaboration with international partners and local communities.

Health Minister Viktor Lyashko announced on 30 March that a heart transplant had been performed at the Centre for Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine on a soldier from Zhytomyr oblast who had returned from russian captivity. Doctors suspected that Yuriy had suffered a heart attack whilst in captivity – examinations showed that his heart was functioning at only 10% capacity. While waiting for a donor organ for 33 days, Yurii was connected to an ECMO machine, which temporarily performed the function of the heart. Two weeks after the transplant, Yurii celebrated his 45th birthday with his family. He is currently undergoing rehabilitation and is gradually returning to his normal life.

According to the Regional State Administration, a regional powerlifting championship for war veterans and combatants was held in Zhytomyr. The competition brought together those who are still on the front line and those returning to civilian life after serious injuries.

Sumy oblast

The Regional Military Administration reported that the enemy carried out a missile strike on Konotop region. As a result of the attack, two people were injured. A man received medical assistance on site, while a 65-year-old woman with injuries was hospitalised. Residential buildings were damaged in Popivka community.

The City Military Administration informed that on 4 April, as a result of a russian drone strike in Bytytsia starosta region of Sumy community, three private residential houses and a civilian vehicle were damaged.

According to Sumy Regional Prosecutor’s Office, at approximately 8am on 4 April, on the road to Marchyshyna-Buda in Shostka region, a russian FPV drone attacked a civilian car. The driver, born in 1957, was injured. His vehicle was destroyed. The man was hospitalised.

During the night of 4 April, the russian army attacked Sumy by strike UAVs. A hit on a multi-storey residential building in the city centre was recorded. A fire broke out on the upper floors of the building. According to preliminary data, 13 people were injured, including three children aged 4, 10, and 15. Two people were hospitalised. Another strike occurred in a different courtyard in Zarichchia region.

As a result of the overnight russian attack on Sumy, roofs and more than 300 windows in four multi-apartment residential buildings were damaged at four locations across the city. Vehicles and engineering networks were also damaged. Due to damage to gas infrastructure, some consumers were left without gas supply.

Multi-storey residential buildings in the city centre were damaged. One person experienced an acute stress reaction as a result of the strike.

The National Police Department of Sumy Oblast reported that as a result of russian shelling of the oblast on 3 April, three people were killed and 22 injured.

According to the Regional Military Administration, in Shostka region, a 29-year-old woman who sustained severe injuries from a guided aerial bomb strike remains in extremely critical condition. A 59-year-old man injured in the same strike is hospitalised in a moderate condition.

A 68-year-old man is receiving medical assistance after driving over an enemy UAV in Svesa community in the morning. He was injured due to the detonation of the drone.

In Sumy community, as a result of enemy UAV attacks, men aged 63 and 70, women aged 67, 57, and 46, and a 17-year-old girl were injured.

In Bilopillia community, a 51-year-old man was killed and a 50-year-old man injured due to a drone strike.

In Velyka Pysarivka community, a 57-year-old man was killed in a drone attack. Additionally, a 43-year-old man was injured in a drone strike on 2 April.

A 25-year-old man sought medical assistance after being injured on 2 April as a result of a UAV strike in Hlukhiv community.

Over the course of the day, from the morning of 3 April to the morning of 4 April, russian forces carried out nearly 90 attacks on 34 settlements across 14 territorial communities of the oblast. The highest number of attacks was recorded in Sumy and Shostka regions. The enemy used mortars, artillery, FPV drones, UAVs, guided aerial bombs, and conducted a missile strike. Air raid alerts in the oblast lasted for 22 hours and 55 minutes during the day.

Civilian infrastructure facilities were damaged and destroyed:

In Shostka community, multi-storey residential buildings, an outbuilding, non-residential premises, a civilian infrastructure facility, and a vehicle were damaged;

In Hlukhiv community, residential houses and a non-residential premises were damaged;

In Esman community, a private residential house and outbuildings were destroyed;

In Znob-Novhorodske community, a private residential house was damaged;

In Sumy community, multi-apartment residential buildings, non-residential buildings, vehicles, and a civilian infrastructure facility were damaged;

In Sad community, a civilian infrastructure facility was damaged;

In Velyka Pysarivka community, an outbuilding and a private passenger car were damaged;

In Bilopillia community, a vehicle was damaged;

In Komyshany community, a civilian infrastructure facility was damaged;

In Svesa community, a private residential house and outbuildings were damaged.

Over the past day, 10 people were evacuated from border communities by local authorities in cooperation with units of the State Emergency Service, the National Police, and public organisations.

The Regional Military Administration reported that in Sumy oblast, resilience centres are operating in 20 communities. These spaces provide support in processing traumatic experiences, adapting to changes, restoring internal resources, and finding community support. Specialists at the centres conduct individual counselling and group sessions. Last year, more than 35,000 residents of the oblast received assistance there, and since the beginning of 2026, nearly 10,000 people have already been supported.

Chernihiv oblast

The City Council reported that during the day of 4 April, a russian unmanned aerial vehicle fell on the northern outskirts of Chernihiv. As of 3pm, no information on casualties has been reported.

According to the City Council, during the night of 4 April, russian forces attacked a critical infrastructure facility in Chernihiv. Information regarding the consequences is being clarified.

Viacheslav Chaus, Head of the Regional Military Administration, said that on the morning of 3 April, a UAV strike in a village of Novhorod-Siverskyi community damaged a lorry and power lines. According to the National Police, in Novhorod-Siverskyi region, a residential building and a vehicle were damaged as a result of a drone strike. The vehicle belonged to a man delivering bread to border areas. The incident occurred in the village of Forostovychi at around 6am.

In Snovsk community, a Geran UAV attacked a transport infrastructure facility.

In Koriukivka region, a private house caught fire, while transport infrastructure, residential buildings, and outbuildings belonging to local residents were damaged.

Chernihiv Border Guard Detachment informed that on 3 April, russian forces attacked four border communities in Chernihiv oblast: Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka, Horodnia, and Snovsk. The enemy carried out shelling using mortars (four explosions) and tube artillery (six explosions), conducted strikes by “Herbera” type UAVs (two explosions), FPV drones (17 explosions), and dropped explosive devices from UAVs (two explosions). Fifteen settlements came under enemy fire.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of the DOR, said that in Chervonohryhorivka community, two boys were injured by an FPV strike – a five-month-old baby and a 6-year-old boy, as well as a 41-year-old woman. The occupiers also used drones, artillery, UAVs and MLRS on the regional center, Marhanets, Myrove and Pokrovske rural communities. Fires broke out, 2 private houses, a fire truck and infrastructure were damaged. The russians struck Pokrovske community by a GAB, and used UAVs on Vasylkivka, Mykolaivka, Dubovykivka and Petropavlivka communities. A fire broke out. A private house and an outbuilding were on fire. Infrastructure was damaged. 

In total, 27 people were injured in Nikopol. 

The enemy attacked the regional center, Marhanets, Myrove, Pokrovske rural and Chervonohryhorivka communities by drones and artillery. An agricultural enterprise, trading kiosks, a shop, a private house, an outbuilding, and a car were damaged. The enemy hit Mykolaivka community by a UAV. Fires broke out. A private house was damaged. A home was damaged as a result of the UAV attack in Hrushivka community.

Poltava oblast

Today night and morning, enemy UAVs attacked industrial and manufacturing enterprises in Poltava region. This was reported by Poltava RMA. Fires broke out as a result of direct hits.

Cherkasy oblast

Ihor Taburets,  Head of Cherkasy RMA, informed that five russian UAVs were recorded flying over the borders of Cherkasy oblast. All were destroyed by air defense forces.  According to preliminary data, nine residential buildings and several cars were damaged by debris and the blast wave in the Ruskolyanska community.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

The General Staff reported that Defense Forces repelled 18 russian attacks towards Huliaipole and Orikhiv over the past day, 3 April. russian forces attacked the positions of Ukrainian defenders in the areas of Huliaipole, Olenokostiantynivka, Varvarivka, Zelene, Dobropillia, Pryluky, Hirke, Charivne, Zaliznychne, Tsvitkove, Stepove, and Stepnohirsk.

According to the head of the regional administration, Ivan Fedorov, russian troops carried out 894 strikes on 45 settlements in Zaporizhzhia obast on 3 April.

The State Emergency Service reported that eight fires broke out in Zaporizhzhia and the region as a result of russian shelling over the past day, 3 April. Rescuers extinguished fires in residential buildings, garages, and vehicles.

As a result of a drone attack on 3 April, two men were injured in Bilenke, and a 67-year-old woman was injured in Novomykolaivka. According to the National Police, russian forces struck private houses and an educational institution.

Mykolaiv oblast

The regional military administration reported that in the Bashtanka region, a 45-year-old man was injured as a result of an attack by a strike drone. A 34-year-old woman was also injured and hospitalized. In addition, a car was destroyed.

As a result of a morning Shahed drone attack on Mykolaiv, a fire broke out in a garage, and a vehicle was destroyed. The RMA reported that the rescuers extinguished fire. There were no casualties.

According to Mykolaiv RMA, on 3 April, russian forces attacked Ochakiv community 12 times with FPV drones. No one was injured.

Odesa oblast

As reported by Odesa RMA, today, 4 April, russian forces attacked Chornomorsk. Civilian infrastructure was hit: an apartment building was damaged, windows were shattered in the apartments, parked cars nearby were damaged, and a fire broke out in a private two-story house. There were no injuries or fatalities.

Kherson oblast

Kherson RMA reported that, on 4 April at around 17:00, russian forces once again shelled Korabelnyi district of Kherson. A 38-year-old woman sustained fatal injuries. A 45-year-old woman suffered blast injuries and multiple shrapnel wounds.

At approximately 14:00, russian troops shelled Bilozerka. A 37-year-old man who was in his yard came under attack. He was hospitalized with a leg injury, blast trauma, and a closed traumatic brain injury.

At noon, russian forces shelled a residential building in Korabelnyi district of Kherson. A 57-year-old man was injured in his own home, sustaining blast injuries and a concussion.

At around 11:50, russian forces attacked Korabelnyi district of Kherson with a strike UAV. A 45-year-old woman and her 10-year-old daughter were injured. They were diagnosed with blast injuries, closed traumatic brain injuries, and concussions.

A paramedic was also hospitalized after being injured during shelling in Korabelnyi district. The 24-year-old medic was assisting victims when he came under repeated strikes by russian forces. He sustained blast injuries, a concussion, and shrapnel wounds to his arm.

At 11:00, russian troops shelled a public transport stop in Korabelnyi district of Kherson. The attack killed a woman whose identity is currently being established. A 71-year-old woman required medical assistance for a concussion, blast injury, and closed traumatic brain injury. Two more women, aged 41 and 48, were also injured. They were taken to the hospital with shrapnel wounds, concussions, and blast and closed traumatic brain injuries. Their condition is assessed as moderate.

The previous evening, the russian forces once again attacked Korabelnyi district of Kherson with artillery. According to the RMA, residential areas were hit. Two women were injured: a 31-year-old woman was diagnosed with blast and traumatic brain injuries, a concussion, and a shrapnel wound to her leg and was prescribed outpatient treatment. Another victim, a 53-year-old woman, sustained a shrapnel wound to the chest and remains under medical supervision.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

As a result of the russian attack by the Shaheeds on 1 April in Lutsk, the Westcars car repair shop suffered significant damage. The new part of the car service suffered the most. The cost of the damage has not yet been calculated, as has the timing of full restoration.

Zakarpattia oblast

The RMA held a large-scale command and staff exercise that lasted three days. The key goal of the event was to increase the region’s readiness to respond to emergencies of various kinds.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

In Ivano-Frankivsk, an annotation board was opened to Hero Ihor Perehiniak. Ihor went to war as a volunteer. Fellow soldiers remember his call sign Kit and how positive and reliable he was.

Lviv oblast

Lviv City Museum presented a photo exhibition Charter: Heat. 11 Views on War. The exhibition features over 40 works by Ukrainian photographers who created them at stabilization points, during combat operations, training, and the daily work of our defenders in the combat zone.

Rivne oblast

The annual Easter for a Friend campaign has started in Rivne oblast. The initiative was launched at the regional hospital for war veterans. For the 13th year in a row, it has been uniting residents of the region to support the military and those in need.

Ternopil oblast

The event Veteran Sport: Movement without Limits 2.0 was held in Ternopil. This event brought together veterans, servicemen and their families to spend time together, chat and discover new sports.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

The RMA signed a memorandum of cooperation and partnership with RegenerativeAgro Ltd. The document concerns the implementation of the investment project Podilskyi Biomethane Plant in Khmelnytskyi region. It concerns the construction of a modern biomethane complex with a capacity of about 5m cubic meters of biomethane per year with a total expected investment volume of EUR 15m.

Chernivtsi oblast

The RMA supported the decision to provide vouchers for the purchase of housing for 165 people. Each for UAH 2m from the state budget for combatants and people with disabilities as a result of the war. These are internally displaced persons who lost their homes in the occupied territories and have no other.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

The capacity of the Vertical Gas Corridor between Bulgaria and Ukraine could reach 10bn cubic meters per year. The corresponding agreement was reached by Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukrainian President, and Andrey Gyurov, Bulgarian Prime Minister.
