War in Ukraine today: latest news, 02 June, 2024 (photo)

It has been the 830th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 7pm:   

The number of combat engagements since the beginning of the day is 55. The situation remains the most tense towards Pokrovsk. The Ukrainian defence forces are putting up a tough fight and holding back the enemy’s offensive.

Kharkiv oblast continues to suffer from russian airstrikes as 10 of them have been launched today. In the afternoon, russians shelled Shestakove, Vetarynarne and Lyptsi from the direction of belgorod (russian federation). In addition, the russian invaders made another unsuccessful assault near Starytsia village towards Kharkiv. Ukrainian soldiers are actively destroying the enemy and as of today, the invaders have lost 117 men in this axis, destroying 2 russian tanks, an armoured vehicle, a cannon, 8 vehicles and 2 units of special equipment. Also, 5 enemy dugouts and two ammunition depots no longer exist.

Kupiansk axis: fighting continues near Nevske. The situation remains unchanged.

Kramatorsk axis: the invaders have tried to improve its tactical position 7 times since the beginning of the day. They were active near Kalynivka and Klishchiivka. All enemy attacks were repelled.

Pokrovdk axis: 4 out of 17 battles are still ongoing. The invaders are attacking near Netailove and Sokil. The total enemy losses in the area are quite significant: 358 people killed and injured, a tank, 2 armoured vehicles and 6 cannons and mortars destroyed. Another 6 units of enemy military equipment were damaged. The information is being clarified.

In other areas, the situation has not changed significantly so far.


The National Center for National Security reported that russia is conducting an inventory of agricultural land in the temporarily occupied territories. They are also forcing the local population to provide legal documents for the land they are cultivating.

Lieutenant General Mykola Oleshchuk, Commander of the Air Force, informed that the defence forces destroyed 24 out of 25 russian Shahed drones at night. Also russia launched two missiles at Ukrainian territory.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

According to the operational report on the situation at the front as of 10am by General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, since the beginning of the day, a battle has been going on near Starytsia towards Kharkiv.

The 42nd Brigade informed that the invaders attacked the positions of the Defence Forces near Starytsia on the morning of 2 June and 20 invaders and 4 tanks were eliminated in one battle. In addition to the destroyed invaders and tanks, russians lost: 21 soldiers injured, 1 infantry fighting vehicle, 1 self-propelled artillery system, 2 vehicles. The fighting continues.

Dmytro Chubenko, Spokesman of the regional Prosecutor’s Office, reported that on the night of 2 June, russians also attacked Izium and as a result, windows and doors in the administrative building were damaged by an Iskander-M missile that hit the territory of the medical facility. According to him, the strike also set the forest on fire which was extinguished by 11:30am.

Oleh Syniehubov, Head of the RMA, said that at about 10am, the invaders attacked Andriivka of Borova community, Izium region. The russian army used an unexploded ordnance. A private house was damaged and a fire broke out. A man and a woman aged 76 and 85 were injured. Medics are providing assistance.

Yesterday at 8:50pm, Perovske village of Bohodukhiv region was targeted. 3 private houses were damaged as a result of mortar shelling.

At 8:40pm, the invaders shelled Ivashky village by artillery. The shelling damaged three houses, outbuildings and power lines.

At 1:50pm, Chaikivka village, Kharkiv region, was shelled by KAB bombs. A private house was damaged and 2 women injured.

At 1:16pm, Lisne village was shelled from belgorod by KABs.

At 12pm, a warehouse was damaged as a result of the shelling of Bohuslivka village in Izium region.

At 11:30am, as a result of the shelling of Petropavlivka village, Kupiansk region, an outbuilding is on fire, the area is being established.

The emergency rescue operations in a 5-storey residential building have been completed in Kharkiv. A total of 7 dead people were found and some fragments of human bodies (one more person) were handed over to police officers for further DNA testing. In total, the invaders killed 9 people overnight. 26 people were injured.

The number of combat engagements increased to four towards Kupiansk. Two attacks were successfully repelled by our troops and two more are ongoing near Druzheliubivka.

Donetsk oblast

The russian army tried three times to approach Kostiantynivka village towards Kurakhove. The occupation forces are trying to advance near Novooleksandrivka and Sokil towards Pokrovsk.

Nazar Voloshyn, Spokesman of the Khortytsia operational-strategic group, reported that towards Kramatorsk, the invaders launched more than a thousand attacks with various artillery, about 300 of which were on Chasiv Yar. Currently, russian troops are using heavy equipment in almost every assault in this area.

Oleksandr Zhuravlov, Head of Lyman CMA informed about 11 russian attacks from multiple rocket launchers. 28 houses were destroyed and 5 people injured.

Olena Rudenko, Director of the intensive care hospital, said that a 48-year-old woman, who was injured yesterday during the russian attack on Kostiantynivka, has successfully undergone surgery. Her condition remains critical.

The State Emergency Service in Donetsk oblast stated that in Kostiantynivka, rescuers defused two unexploded russian aerial bombs weighing a total of 750kg.

Volodymyr Marynych, Head of Illinivka Civil-Military Administration, said that there are currently 13 children in the frontline Zoria village of Illinivka community, where they plan to introduce forced evacuation of families with children.

The operational situation in the oblast as of the morning of 2 June is as follows:

Towards Pokrovsk, Paraskoviivka, Kostiantynivka and Zoriane of Marinka community were shelled. In Kurakhivka, 7 private houses and an administrative building were damaged, Kurakhove and Hostre were under attack. A person was injured and 2 five-storey buildings damaged in Ukrainsk of Selydove community. In Novohrodivka community, 1 person was killed and 3 houses damaged in Ptyche, 4 houses and 2 administrative buildings in Mykhailivka and a house in Orlivka were damaged.

Towards Kramatorsk, 5 people were injured and 28 houses damaged in Lyman. An industrial area was shelled in Sloviansk. 16 private houses, an apartment building and 2 administrative buildings were damaged in Kostiantynivka.

Towards Bakhmut, 8 houses were damaged in Toretsk community: 7 in Pivnichne and 1 in Shcherbynivka. 6 private houses and 3 apartment buildings were damaged in Chasiv Yar community.

In total, russians shelled settlements in Donetsk oblast 23 times yesterday. 53 people, including 8 children, were evacuated from the frontline.

Vadym Filashkin, Head of Donetsk Regional Military Administration, reported that yesterday russians killed 1 civilian in Ptyche. Another 8 people in the oblast were injured over the day.

Luhansk oblast

A residential building in frontline Nevske was shelled yesterday. The extent of the damage is being established. The village was shelled with cannon and rocket artillery.

The russians also targeted Stelmakhivka and Kuzemivka with various types of weapons.

During the day, the invaders tried to push through our defences 17 times towards Lyman, Siversk and Kupiansk.

At the checkpoint between Sievierodonetsk and Novoaidar, representatives of the local military enlistment office stop all cars and buses. They checked the men’s IDs and gave them summonses.

Artem Lysohor, Head of Luhansk Regional Military Administration, reported that back in 2022, the invaders took all the modern. For two years, no steps have been taken to improve the situation in the city.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

According to Ruslan Kravchenko, Head of Kyiv RMA, a night alert was declared in Kyiv oblast because of russian army attack drones in the airspace of the region. The wreckage of the enemy drone was found outside the settlement. There were no hits to residential or critical infrastructure. There were no casualties.

Emergency power cuts were introduced in the region due to the difficult situation in the country’s energy system caused by constant hostile shelling. In the afternoon, Kyiv oblast and the capital were able to return to the planned stabilisation schedules. Kyiv warned of planned blackouts from 6pm to 12am.

Ruslan Kravchenko, Head of Kyiv Regional Military Administration, and Ole Egberg Mikkelsen, Danish Ambassador discussed the implementation of priority projects for the Kyiv oblast. They talked about improving the safety of the region’s residents by increasing military equipment and vehicles for mobile fire teams, rebuilding the region, providing additional medical equipment, and setting up a rehabilitation centre.

Kyiv City Council stated that the shortage of specialists at some road construction companies in the capital reaches 28-30%. The greatest need is for drivers, mechanics, machinists and painters. Currently, approximately 17% of road workers are in the Armed Forces, and their number is constantly growing.

In Kyiv, people said goodbye to the fallen combat medic Iryna ‘Cheka’ Tsybukh. She was killed during a rotation in Kharkiv axis on 29 May, a few days before her birthday. On 1 June, she would have turned 26.

A children’s rehabilitation centre is planned to be built in the village of Dzvinkove in Boiarka community. The construction of the facility was initiated by the Voices of Children Charitable Foundation. The centre will provide psychosocial support to families who have experienced traumatic events. The architects presented a preliminary design, which was created with the help of the children themselves.

The event What Can We Do with Archival Materials about the War Now, which is part of the RIGHTS NOW!, a human rights programme at the Docudays UA festival, was announced for 2 June at the Zhovten Cinema in Kyiv. At the event, the Archive of War will share its experience that will be useful for journalists, human rights defenders, lawyers, civil society activists and government institutions.  

Zhytomyr oblast

An Estonian delegation headed by Margus Tähkna, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Estonia, visited Zhytomyr oblast. The Estonian partners got acquainted with the project to reconstruct a part of the medical complex at Berdychiv City Hospital into a rehabilitation unit. The possibility of their participation in co-financing the reconstruction work and the purchase of modern rehabilitation equipment is currently being discussed.

The Estonian International Cooperation and Development Centre, Zhytomyr Regional Military Administration and Ovruch City Council signed a memorandum on the implementation of new reconstruction projects in Zhytomyr oblast. ECA said that they are talking about the reconstruction of a building in Ovruch into a residential building for internally displaced persons. Other priority areas of cooperation include the reconstruction of Malyn Children’s Art School, the construction of bomb shelters for the regional centre for social and psychological rehabilitation of children and Korosten City Centre for Social Support of Children and Families.

Since the beginning of 2024, 1,285 unemployed people have joined the Recovery Army project in Zhytomyr oblast, which is more than last year. The work is being organised in 39 territorial communities. This was reported by the regional employment service. 

Sumy oblast

Sumy Regional Prosecutor’s Office said that 267 people died in Sumy oblast due to the full-scale russian invasion. Among them are 13 children — three girls and 10 boys. 

Sumy Regional Military Administration reported that on 2 June, russians shelled infrastructure facilities in Shostka district with multiple rocket launchers. All necessary services are working at the site. The consequences of the attack are being clarified.

At night and in the morning on 2 June, the russian military carried out 3 attacks on the territory of Velyka Pysarivka, Bilopillia and Znob-Novhorodsk communities. A total of 11 explosions were recorded, mortar and artillery shelling.

On 1 June, the russian army fired 21 times at the border areas and settlements of Sumy oblast. A total of 62 explosions were recorded: mortar and artillery attacks, the use of kamikaze drones, and a missile attack. 10 communities were shelled: Krasnopillia, Bilopillia, Khotin, Yunakivka, Myropillia, Esman, Svesa, Seredyna-Buda, Velyka Pysarivka, Chupakhivka.

The benefactors handed over important equipment to the defenders of Sumy oblast to fight the enemy – generators, starters, quadcopters with thermal imagers, FPV drones. Representatives of the Universe of Good Charitable Foundation and the Kyiv Football Association also supported the Ukrainian military.

At the direction of Ukrenerho NPC, emergency shutdown schedules were introduced in Sumy oblast. 

Chernihiv oblast

Chernihiv border guard detachment reported that, on 1 June, three communities, Novhorod-Siversk, Semenivka and Snovsk, were under russian attack. Thirty-one attacks were registered in the direction of seven border settlements. The russian army fired from cannon artillery and mortars. 

Chernihiv Regional TCC said that in Chernihiv oblast, on 1 June, people bid farewell to five soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. They are: Leonid Buldenko, Ivan Senko, Ruslan Danilchenko, Sergeant Serhii Shvydkyi (died in January 2023, identified by DNA examination) and sailor Nataliia Verpeka, who had the award of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine — the honorary badge “Steel Cross”. 

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Council, reported that 1 enemy missile was shot down in Kryvyi Rih region, and at night 2 enemy warplanes were destroyed by our defenders of the skies over Nikopol region. 

In the evening and in the morning, the occupiers fired artillery and launched kamikaze drones at the region’s centre, Marhanets and Myrove communities. In the latter, 2 private houses, an outbuilding and a garage were damaged. 

Attacks on Nikopol region do not stop, with about 15 attacks per day. The region’s centre, Marhanets, Myrove, Chervonohryhorivka, and Pokrovsk communities were shelled with artillery and kamikaze drones were launched. An infrastructure facility was damaged.

Vinnytsia oblast

The Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that a Shahed drone was shot down over Vinnytsia oblast at night.  

Kirovohrad oblast

The Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that russian Shahed was shot down over Kirovohrad oblast at night.

In Kropyvnytskyi, the memory of military pilot Vladyslav Saveliev was honoured at the Alley of Honorary Military Graves of the Far Eastern Cemetery. A year ago, on 2 June, a soldier was killed in action near the city of Pokrovsk, Donetsk oblast. 

The Alley of Glory of Heroes has been arranged in Machukhiv community. The cemetery was officially opened today. Stands with portraits of the fallen soldiers were consecrated by Metropolitan Fedir of Poltava and Kremenchuk of the OCU.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Yesterday the occupiers carried out 381 strikes on Zaporizhzhia oblast. The enemy conducted an airstrike on Novoandriivka. 174 UAVs attacked Huliaipole, Levadne, Robotyne, Mala Tokmachka, Malynivka, and Novoandriivka. There were 10 MLRS attacks at Robotyne and Mala Tokmachka and 196 artillery strikes on the territories of Huliaipole, Mala Tokmachka, Novoandriivka, Robotyne, Levadne and Malynivka. 29 reports of housing destruction were received.

Today, 2 June, a rally was held in support of the captured defenders of Mariupol on Heroiv Square in Zaporizhzhia. More than 70 people participated in the event, including relatives and friends of the Ukrainian captives.

Mykolaiv oblast

On the night of 2 June, air defence forces destroyed 11 Shahed 131/136 type UAVs in Mykolaiv oblast. A fire broke out in the warehouse premises of an industrial enterprise in Kutsurub community, covering an area of 1,500 sq m. As of 6am, the fire was localised.

Yesterday, 1 June, the enemy twice shelled the waters of Ochakiv community with mortars. The enemy also attacked Stepove community. Missile debris (type to be determined) fell on open ground outside the settlement. Seven private houses and farm buildings were damaged as a result of the blast wave.

Additionally, the russians shelled Kutsurub community with artillery. As a result of one of the attacks, a fire broke out on the territory of the school sports ground in the village of Ivanivka. The fire was promptly extinguished.

Mykola Kuleba, the head of the Save Ukraine charity organisation, reported that five children from the Novopetrivka boarding school in Mykolaiv oblast have been returned to Ukraine. According to the official, in mid-July 2022, the children were kidnapped by russians at gunpoint and moved to occupied territory.

A space for servicemen, veterans, and their families was opened in the city of Mykolaiv as part of the Path of Resilience project, supported by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and the Federal Foreign Office of Germany. The main purpose of creating such a space is to improve the reintegration process of war veterans, as well as to provide psychosocial support to servicemen and their families. Psychologists, lawyers, social workers, and representatives of veteran public organisations are involved in the work of the space. Support groups for the families of servicemen and veterans are also planned to be organised.

Odesa oblast

The ‘South’ Air Command stated that on the night of 2 June, 2024, Air Defense Forces destroyed 5 “Shahed-136/131” strike UAVs in Odesa oblast.

Residents of the Odesa oblast received over UAH 41m for property damaged by russian shelling. In total, nearly 3,300 residential properties in the region have been added to the Register of Damaged and Destroyed Property.

A mural dedicated to Ukrainian defenders and russian aggression has been created in the city of Izmail. The mural is located on the grounds of the military-historical museum complex. It depicts, among other things, the building of the Ukrainian Danube Shipping Company, which was attacked by russian strike drones last summer. The mural’s author is local artist and museum complex employee Serhii Denysov. He worked on the image for over a month, involving his students and acquaintances in the process.

Kherson oblast

Last night, the enemy once again shelled the city of Kherson. Two private houses were completely burned down. Many homes were damaged: roofs were broken, windows shattered, and walls were pierced by fragments.

Yesterday, Air Defense Forces destroyed a Supercam reconnaissance drone and an unidentified enemy drone towards Kherson. The previous day, russian occupiers attacked Kherson oblast with a ballistic missile (likely an “Iskander-M”).

On 1 June, Antonivka, Sadove, Zymivnyk, Tokarivka, Bilozerka, Kizomys, Stanislav, Shyroka Balka, Sofiivka, Oleksandrivka, Novotiahynka, Poniativka, Blahovishchenske, Beryslav, Mykhailivka, Velyka Oleksandrivka, Krupytsia, Mylove, Monastyrske, Chervonyi Maiak, Havrylivka, Olhivka, and the city of Kherson were under enemy shelling and airstrikes. The enemy also targeted Velyka Oleksandrivka community with a missile. 9 private houses, an administrative building, medical facilities, a cultural institution, shops, and private vehicles were damaged. One person was injured due to the russian aggression.

Yesterday, six fires occurred in the ecosystems of Kherson oblast. Three of them were caused by russian shelling.

Volunteers of the Ukrainian Red Cross in Kherson distributed about 20,000 food kits during May. The kit contains essential food items: pasta, cereals, sugar, canned goods, oil and more. The food kits were given to the most vulnerable categories of the city’s population — large families, people with disabilities, internally displaced persons, and the elderly.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

Lutsk City Council reported that Volyn Regional Territorial Center of Procurement and Social Support received a LOGIC POWER LPY-PSW-2500VA+ uninterruptible power supply thanks to the budget funds.

Zakarpattia oblast

Uzhhorod City Center of Social Services of the Department of Social Policy together with the Under the Lock company, the Nehemiya NGO, the Children’s Service of Uzhhorod City Council, as well as representatives of the juvenile prevention sector of the prevention department and the National Police in Zakarpattia oblast organised leisure activities for children from families of military personnel , veterans, fallen Defenders of Ukraine, as well as orphans and children deprived of parental care. Various attractions worked, children were entertained by animators, educational training was conducted by representatives of the police, medical workers, rescuers, and a charity fair was held.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Civil servants from Kolomyia region held a charity auction in support of the defenders. During the event, it was possible to raise over UAH 1.4m. 33 unique lots were presented at the auction.

Lviv oblast

Since the beginning of the year, Lviv RMA has financed the requests of military units for over UAH 400m thanks to the Safe Lviv Oblast program.

In Zolochiv region, memorial plaques were erected in memory of 2 fallen soldiers. Roman Haykovyi was killed on 5 December, 2023, near the village of Stelmakhivka, Luhansk oblast. Volodymyr Cherkaliuk was considered missing since 3 March, 2024. Later, his death near Bohdanivka, Donetsk oblast was confirmed.

Ivan Zhiryk, Master Sergeant from Rava-Ruska community, was posthumously awarded the III degree For Courage Order by the President of Ukraine.

Rivne oblast

In the oblast, in comparison to April, in May, anxiety significantly increased. In total, there were 28 alarms during the month (16 in April); the longest was recorded on 8 May – 2 hours and 13 minutes (from 3:52 am to 6:05 am); the shortest – 28 May – 14 minutes (from 8:18pm to 8:32pm); the alarm was announced 4 times during the day on 3 May; the maximum number of days without alarms is 5 days (13-19 May). During the full-scale war in Rivne oblast, the air alarm sounded 639 times.

Ternopil oblast

Ternopil RMA held an online meeting with the leadership of the Swiss-Ukrainian project Cohesion and Regional Development of Ukraine. According to the Memorandum of Understanding, the Regional Development Agency of Ternopil oblast together with the UCORD project prepared analytical reports and profiles of the development of water supply, drainage and waste management.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

The RMA reported that at night, in the airspace of Khmelnytskyi oblast, an enemy plane was neutralised. So far, there have been no reports of injuries, deaths or damage to property. 

Chernivtsi oblast

Roman Klichuk, Head of the Chernivtsi City Council, is on a working visit to Kupiansk, where he met with Andrii Besedin, Head of Kupiansk Regional Administrative Office. They met just 6km from the front line. During the visit, Roman Klichuk presented the flag of Chernivtsi as a symbol of support and brotherhood.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine, met with Lloyd Austin, US Defense Minister . They discussed the defence needs of Ukraine, the strengthening of the Ukrainian air defence system, the F-16 coalition and the preparation of a bilateral security agreement.

Volodymyr Zelensky met with Jose Manuel Ramush-Orta, President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste. It became the first in the history of bilateral relations. They discussed the Global Peace Summit.

In Singapore, Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with the delegation of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the US House of Representatives. Further support for Ukraine was discussed.

Sweden suspended the plan to supply Gripen fighters to Ukraine.  Paul Jonson, Swedish Defense Minister, stated that the suspension of plans to supply Gripen to Ukraine is due to the fact that the main attention is now being paid to the introduction of F-16 fighters.

Petr Fiala, Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, supported the position of the NATO Secretary General that the Allies should allow Ukraine to use Western weapons for strikes on the territory of russia. He considers it absolutely logical that the possibility of attacking legitimate military objects on the territory of the russian federation is part of Ukraine’s right to self-defence.

The Ministry of Defense of the Netherlands reported that they, with the support of other countries, want to assemble and send the Patriot air defence system to Ukraine as soon as possible. To do this, the country provides main components from its stocks and calls on European countries to add other parts they have. 

Denmark offered the EU a plan for the integration of Ukraine into the European defence industry. Troels Lund Poulsen, Danish Defense Minister, initiated a joint appeal to the EU together with colleagues from Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands and Poland regarding the integration of Ukraine into the European defence industrial complex.

The Parliament of Estonia declared the moscow patriarchate an institution supporting russian aggression. Estonian MPs noted that the calls of the moscow patriarchate hide a threat to the security and existence of Estonia, in particular, a direct threat to public and constitutional order in Estonia. In addition, the Parliament of Estonia calls on all states and the international community to prevent the hostile activities of the moscow patriarchate in exerting influence.
