What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6pm:   

During the day of 1 May, there were 100x tactical engagements.

The enemy launched a total of 2x missile and 41x air strikes, 42x MLRS attacks on the positions of Ukrainian troops and various settlements. Unfortunately, the russian terrorist attacks have killed and wounded civilians. Residential apartment blocks and private houses, as well as other infrastructure, got destroyed and damaged.

Volyn and Polissia axes: no significant changes. No signs of formation of an offensive group.

Sivershchyna and Slobozhanshchyna axes: the adversary maintains its military presence in the russian areas bordering Ukraine. The enemy conducts subversion, continues shelling of Ukrainian settlements from the territory of russia and increases the concentration of mining operations along the state border of Ukraine. The enemy launched air strikes in the vicinities of Vodolahy, Yamne (Sumy oblast), Vesele, Kharkiv, Vovchansk (Kharkiv oblast). More than 30x settlements, including Khrinivka (Chernihiv oblast), Korenok, Volfyne, Velyka Berizka, Yunakivka (Sumy oblast), came under enemy artillery and mortar fire.

Kupiansk and Lyman axes: the Ukrainian defenders repelled 11x attacks in the vicinities of Ivanivka, Kyslivka, Kotliarivka, Berestove and Kopanky (Kharkiv oblast), Stelmakhivka (Luhansk oblast). The invaders fired artillery and mortars at around 10x settlements, including Synkivka, Stepova Novoselivka, Kotliarivka (Kharkiv oblast).

Lyman axis: the Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled 9x attacks in the vicinities of Hrekivka, Nevske, Serebrianka forestry (Luhansk oblast), Terny (Donetsk oblast). The adversary launched an airstrike in the area of Serebrianka forestry. The enemy fired artillery and mortars at more than 10x settlements, including Makiivka, Nevske (Luhansk oblast), Terny, Yampolivka (Donetsk oblast).

Bakhmut axis: the Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled 14x attacks in the vicinities of Bilohorivka (Luhansk oblast), Verkhnokamianske, Spirne, Novyi (Donetsk oblast), where the enemy attempted to improve its tactical position. The adversary launched an airstrike in the vicinity of Dyliivka (Donetsk oblast). More than 10x settlements came under artillery and mortar fire, including Rozdolivka, Kalynivka, Chasiv Yar, Andriivka (Donetsk oblast).

Avdiivka axis: the Ukrainian defenders repelled 33x attacks in the vicinities of Kalynove, Arkhanhelske, Prohres, Ocheretyne, Sokil, Soloviove, Novopokrovske, Semenivka, Umanske, Yasnobrodivka, Netailove, Pervomaiske (Donetsk oblast), where the enemy, using air strikes, made attempts to dislodge Ukrainian troops from their positions. The adversary launched an airstrike in the vicinity of Zhelanne (Donetsk oblast). The invaders fired artillery and mortars at around 20x settlements, including Arkhanhel’s’ke, Novopokrovske, Umanske (Donetsk oblast).

Novopavlivka axis: the Ukrainian Defense Forces continue to hold back the enemy near Krasnohorivka, Heorhiivka, Novomykhailivka, Vodiane and Urozhaine (Donetsk oblast), where the invaders, with air support, made 17x attempts to breach Ukrainian defence. The invaders launched an airstrike in the vicinity of Kostiantynivka (Donetsk oblast). The enemy fired artillery and mortars at more than 10x settlements, including Krasnohorivka, Heorhiivka, Paraskoviivka, Kostiantynivka (Donetsk oblast).

Orikhiv axis: the enemy, using air attacks, launched 2x assaults on positions of Ukrainian defenders in the vicinities of Staromaiorske (Donetsk oblast) and Robotyne (Zaporizhzhia oblast). Enemy air strikes hit the vicinity of Staromaiorske (Donetsk oblast) and Lobkove (Zaporizhzhia oblast). Around 15x settlements, including Malynivka, Bilohiria, Robotyne, Shcherbaky (Zaporizhzhia oblast), were under artillery and mortar fire of the occupiers.

Kherson axis: the enemy does not abandon its intention to dislodge Ukrainian troops from their bridgeheads on the left bank of the Dnipro River. In particular during the day of 1 May, the invaders executed 5x unsuccessful assaults on positions of Ukrainian troops in the vicinity of Krynky (Kherson oblast). The adversary launched air strikes in the vicinities of Olhivka, Tшahynka, Veletenske (Kherson oblast). The occupiers fired artillery and mortars at around 20 settlements, including Mykolaivka, Ivanivka, Tokarivka (Kherson oblast).

During the day of 1 May, the Ukrainian Air Force launched airstrikes on 1 command post, 7x concentrations of enemy troops.

The Ukrainian Missile Forces hit 1x UAVs control post, 1x concentration of russian troops.


Specialists will be trained to rebuild Ukraine. The government has allocated UAH 549m to the oblasts to upgrade workshops in vocational schools. This money will be used to set up 88 modern workshops in educational institutions to train specialists to rebuild the country. The project will also create two workshops for civilian drone operators, including ground and floating drones. The profession of drone operator will be licensed this year.

Minister of Economy Yuliia Svyrydenko reported that Ukraine plans to engage more women in demining. Currently, the number of women among mine action operators is already 30%, which is in line with NATO’s agenda. Canada will help Ukraine implement training programmes in mine action involving women. 

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that towards Kupiansk sector, the Defence Forces repelled 11 russian attacks near Ivanivka, Kyslivka, Kotliarivka, Berestove and Kopanky.

In April, it became known that 36 Ukrainian soldiers from Kharkiv and the oblast had been killed. The deaths were officially reported by communities or universities.

Mayor Ihor Terekhov reported that during the last enemy shelling of Kharkiv, a hit was recorded in Kyivskyi district of the city. Civilian infrastructure was damaged. There were no casualties. At least 10 private households were damaged as a result of the russian attack on Kharkiv. Police head Volodymyr Tymoshko confirmed that russians hit Kharkiv with a D-30 UMPB. According to him, 14 private houses were damaged.

The press service of the regional Prosecutor’s Office said that in addition Shevchenkivskyi district was hit by russian forces in the morning and a hit was recorded in a forest belt. According to the press service, no one was injured.

Based on the information provided by Oleh Syniehubov, Head of Kharkiv RMA, at 10am, russians hit a car and a private house in Zolochiv, Bohodukhiv region. According to the updated data, two civilians were killed and nine injured as a result of today’s hostile shelling. A 64-year-old man and a 38-year-old woman, both locals, were killed in a car by an enemy KAB. A 74-year-old woman and a 77-year-old civilian man were hospitalised with explosive injuries. Their condition is assessed as moderate. A 35-year-old injured man with a mild condition was treated on an outpatient basis. Three men, a 41-year-old woman and an 11-year-old boy were also injured. All of them received the necessary medical care. Administrative premises, the Oschadbank building, more than 20 cars and a private house were damaged.

Also, at 10:30am, there were three hostile strikes by UAVs between Lyptsi and Vesele villages. There were no casualties.

At about 12pm, the invaders shelled Leliukivka of Shevchenkove community, Kupiansk region. A 67-year-old resident, who was injured in the shelling, died in hospital.

The press service of the regional Prosecutor’s Office said that around 4:10pm, russian troops shelled Lyptsi of Kharkiv region. A 78-year-old woman was killed by a direct hit to a residential building. According to preliminary data, russians shelled the village with a mortar.

The day before, at 10:10am, the enemy shelled Kharkiv by KAB bombs. The building of the institution, garages, cars, railway premises and the railway station were damaged. 10 civilians were injured and a 26-year-old man killed.

About 15 settlements of Kharkiv oblast suffered enemy artillery and mortar attacks yesterday: Synkivka, Stepova Novoselivka, Kotliarivka and others. Vesele, Kharkiv, Vovchansk, Synkivka, Petropavlivka and Podoly were hit by airstrikes.

At 11:10am, Vovchansk was shelled by KABs. The premises of the enterprise, a bus, two cars and a tractor were damaged.

On 30 April at 11:28am a MRL hit the dacha cooperative in Vesele village, Kharkiv region, and as a result, two buildings were on fire.

Yesterday Ukrainian troops repelled 6 attacks towards Kupiansk, including near Berestove, east of Kopanka, Kharkiv region.

89 children with their families were evacuated from certain settlements in Bohodukhiv, Izium and Kharkiv regions: Zolochiv community – 15; Borova community – 4; Derhachi community – 40; Lyptsi community – 30.

Combined teams of bomb experts cleared 35.8 hectares of territory and destroyed 607 explosive ordnance.

Donetsk oblast

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that the Ukrainian army repelled over 100 enemy attacks at the frontline in Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts. The russian army attacked most of the time towards Bakhmut and Avdiivka.

The 63rd separate mechanised brigade informed that towards Lyman, Yampolivka village, which is near Terny (almost the border of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts), the soldiers launched a successful assault and recaptured the positions from the occupiers.

The dam of Karlivka Reservoir, which was destroyed by russian shelling, cannot be restored at the moment as it is too close to the front. At least 8 communities of Pokrovsk region, home to 118,000 people, are left without water, either completely or partially.

Also russians attacked Hirnyk by Uragan MRLs this afternoon. A 57-year-old woman and a 64-year-old man were killed. The injured are being provided with all necessary medical care.

One person was killed and two injured as a result of the shelling of Kalynove in Novohrodivka community. This is the second day in a row that Kalynove has been under serious shelling and the day before, 1 person was killed there. The final consequences of this morning’s shelling are being established.

According to Donetsk Regional Military Administration, there are still 198 people in Ocheretyne, where the fighting is ongoing.

The operational situation in the oblast as of the morning of 1 May is as follows:

Towards Pokrovsk, Krasnohorivka, Kostiantynivka and Paraskoviivka of Marinka community were shelled. A house and an administrative building were damaged in Hostre of Kurakhove community. A person was killed in Novooleksandrivka of Hrodivka community.

Towards Kramatorsk, Torske, Terny and Yampolivka of Lyman community were shelled. One person was killed in Kalynove of Illinivka community. The outskirts of Konstiantynivka community were under attack.

Towards Bakhmut, an administrative building was damaged in Shcherbynivka of Toretsk community. 9 private houses, an apartment building and an industrial building were damaged in Chasiv Yar community. 2 houses were damaged in Siversk.

In total, russians attacked settlements in Donetsk oblast 7 times. 216 people, including 19 children, were evacuated from the frontline.

Vadym Filashkin, Head of Donetsk Regional Military Administration, reported that yesterday russians killed two civilians: in Novooleksandrivka and Kalynove.

Luhansk oblast

The enemy ground activity is observed along the entire frontline. Thus, enemy attacks were repelled near Stelmakhivka towards Kupiansk, Novoiehorivka, Hrekivka, Makiivka, Nevske and Serebrianka forestry towards Lyman, and Bilohorivka towards Bakhmut.

Airstrikes were launched on Bilohorivka and the territory of Serebrianka forest.

The settlements located near the front line were shelled 110 times. The invaders Hrekivka, Nevske, Kuzemivka and Stelmakhivka 31 times by artillery and 34 times by mortars. Makiivka, Stelmakhivka and Kuzemivka suffered. In addition, 45 enemy UAVs attempted to target Nevske and Kuzemivka.

On the last day of April, volunteers delivered food packages to the de-occupied villages and distributed them to residents of Nevske, Novoliubovka and Makiivka.

According to Luhansk Regional Military Administration, men are being checked at the checkpoints in the occupied Starobilsk region. Those under 30 are immediately handed a call-up for service. Others are still limited to military registration.

Artem Lysohor, Head of Luhansk Regional Military Administrative, reported that on the eve of childbirth, women in the so-called “lpr” can still be hospitalised in some cases without a russian passport. However, a week later, when they are discharged, they must check whether one of the parents has russian documents. They threaten not to give the child back.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

According to Kyiv RMA, explosive demolition works are being carried out in the Vyshgorod district with specialists of the State Emergency Service working in the region. Residents were urged to remain calm.

Yevhen Zhar, Commander of the National Guard military unit guarding the territory of the Chornobyl nuclear power plant, stated that 103 captured National Guard soldiers from the Chornobyl nuclear power plant are being held in two different detention centres in russia. Information about them is available only from official sources, through the Coordination Headquarters or the Main Intelligence Directorate. According to him, the command of the unit is constantly communicating with the relatives of the prisoners and helping them to solve their problems.

Ruslan Kravchenko, Head of the RMA, said that thanks to international partners, almost 15,000 windows have already been installed in previously damaged facilities in Kyiv oblast. The windows are being replaced as part of a program created by the American organisation Global Empowerment Mission in partnership with The Howard G. Buffett Foundation.

In Kyiv, the curfew will remain in effect for Easter, with police officers on duty near churches to prevent provocations. In case of an air raid alert, law enforcement officers will help evacuate believers and clergy to the nearest shelters. Moreover, special temporary monitoring centres will be set up to promptly monitor the situation in Kyiv to prevent offences.

The city council informed that residents of Bila Tserkva will be limited in their access to cemeteries during the Memorial Week, from May 11 to 19. Easter services in the city’s churches will be held in compliance with the curfew and security requirements.

Bucha community sent an all-terrain vehicle to the front line for Ukrainian soldiers. The soldiers also received a Starlink system and an Easter basket.

According to Mykola Kalashnyk, Head of Darnytsia District State Administration, temporary housing for IDPs was purchased in Kyiv at the expense of the city budget. The apartments are located in new buildings with the possibility to accommodate people for a year for free with the extension right in case they do not find new housing. According to him, 22 families will be sheltered in Darnytsia district. In total, about 800 people in the district are waiting for housing.

The pre-premiere movie screening “We Were Recruits” about the soldiers of the 3rd Brigade took place in Kyiv. Its actors are real soldiers of the 3rd Brigade, four of whom were able to attend the event. During the screening, a charity auction was held to raise funds for the robotic systems purchase for the brigade’s special missions.

Zhytomyr oblast

Commander of the Air Assault Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Ihor Skybiuk visited the 95th separate airborne assault brigade to honour its soldiers for courage and heroism in difficult conditions of military operations.

Zhytomyr Lyceum No. 5 held a Civil Defense Day under the slogan “Prevent. Save. Help”. The event was held in the form of an educational game, which helped students to better learn the material. Rescuers, representatives of the gas service, patrol police, dog handlers, and volunteers of the Ukrainian Red Cross Society all participated in the event.

In Zhytomyr, two streets were renamed to decolonize place names: Malykova Street will now be called Defenders of Ukraine Street, and Radishcheva Street will be called Berehova Street. The mayor Serhii Sukhomlyn signed the order.

Sumy oblast

At night and in the morning, russians attacked Sumy oblast border settlements 5 times with a total of 30 explosions recorded. The enemy shelled Seredyna-Buda community with artillery and mortars, Esman with mortars, and a large-calibre machine gun was used in the Shalyhyne community.

Over the past day, the russian military fired 58 times at Sumy oblast using various types of weapons with 286 explosions recorded. 11 communities were shelled: Mykolaivka, Khotin, Yunakivka, Bilopillia, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Nova Sloboda, Esman, Shalyhyne, Seredyna-Buda, Znob-Novhorodske.

The police of Sumy oblast reported that on 30 April, one person was injured, 4 private households, a car and low-pressure gas pipes damaged in Bilopillia. During the shelling of Seredyna-Buda community, three private houses, a car and a power line were damaged. The shelling of Yunakivka community damaged a private house and a low-pressure gas pipe. 

According to the village elder Valentyn Senchenko, on 29 April, the russian military dropped two guided aerial bombs on the Usok village of Yampil community. The explosions destroyed a local school building and damaged 25 residential buildings.

The RMA announced that from 22 April 2024 until the martial law ends, additional temporary restrictions of the special regime have been imposed in Sumy oblast. According to the order, free entry, stay, residence, movement of persons and work not related to the construction, arrangement and maintenance of engineering and fortification structures, communications, emergency and rescue operations, emergency medical care, etc. are prohibited outside of settlements within 5km zone from the state border.

40 heroes from Sumy oblast have been posthumously honoured with state awards. Volodymyr Artiukh, Head of Sumy RMA, awarded the families of the fallen soldiers with the Order for Courage, III class.

Also, according to the RMA, Sumy hospitals received rehabilitation equipment from the Congress of Ukrainians in Latvia. This equipment will be used in the rehabilitation departments of three health care facilities in the regional centre and help rehabilitate patients, including veterans.

Finally, the RMA informed that Sumy Regional Security and Defense Forces units that protect the border received the first shipment of ATVs provided with help of active regional businesses. The ATVs will help the defenders counteract enemy sabotage groups more effectively. 

Chernihiv oblast

Over the past day, russian troops fired seven times at Novhorod-Siverskyi, Koriukivka and Snovsk border communities in Chernihiv oblast. According to the State Border Guard Service, a total of 20 explosions were recorded: one explosive device dropped from a UAV, 4 NARs launched from an aircraft, 2 cannon artillery strikes, 12 mortar strikes, and a missile strike, probably from an Iskander missile system with a cluster warhead.

Liudmyla Zamai, Director of the Department of Culture and Tourism, Nationalities and Religions of Chernihiv RMA, reported that the roof of the almost destroyed library, a 19th century architectural monument, was restored. The russian army damaged the building on 11 March 2022 by dropping bombs nearby. All the brick walls of the monument were recreated in authentic form, plus a new attic and roof were installed. According to the director, the World Monuments Fund sponsored all the repairs.

The RMA also informed that a school bomb shelter is planned for construction in Chernihiv oblast. A memorandum on the shelter construction was signed by the Desnianska community and the Republic of Lithuania. The estimated construction work cost and documentation preparation costs are €2.6m.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

In the evening, Nikopol was shelled three times, twice with artillery and once with Grad MRL. An 82-year-old woman was injured and suffered severe stress. 8 high-rise buildings, an administrative building, a kindergarten, a gas station and a power line were damaged. In the morning, the occupiers launched three kamikaze drones at the city.

4 people were injured in the raion centre of Nikopol region, four people were injured in the enemy attacks. A 47-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman were hospitalised. A 44-year-old man and a 43-year-old woman sustained minor injuries. In total, the area was attacked 13 times during the day, the occupiers firing artillery and drones at Nikopol, Marhanets and Myrove communities. A hospital, a sports ground, an infrastructure facility, 8 private houses, 6 outbuildings were damaged, a car burned down and street lighting and power lines were damaged.

Vinnytsia oblast

​​Ten defenders from Vinnytsia oblast were killed in the fight for Ukraine. 

Oleksandr Leonidovych Mlinkov, Dmytro Tkachuk, Serhii Andriiovych Bevz, Volodymyr Volodymyrovych Pryharin, Ruslan Anatoliiovych Matiushchenko, Bohdan Volodymyrovych Kryzhnyi, Vadym Anatoliiovych Lopatynskyi, Ruslan Ivanovych Shtefaniuk, Serhii Petrovych Chernii and Pavlo Radetskyi.

The children’s corner at the YaMariupol.Vinnytsia centre has been renovated. Dozens of children visit it every day – young Mariupol residents who have taken refuge in the city with their parents.

As was reported by RMA, a soldier from Vinnytsia oblast, Bohdan Dymchak, was awarded the medal For Military Service to Ukraine. 

Poltava oblast

Serhii Kotov, Director of the City’s Health Hospital, announced that MRI and CT scans will be free of charge in Poltava for military personnel who are treated in municipal medical facilities and who apply for referrals there. The city council has approved funding for these medical examinations in the amount of almost UAH 9m. 

Cherkasy oblast

Ihor Taburets, Head of the RMA, reported that the families of the fallen National Guardsmen from Cherkasy and the defenders from Zolotonosha received awards. These are the Orders For Courage of the II and III degrees from Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi. 

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Yesterday the occupiers launched 383 strikes hitting 6 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast. The enemy launched airstrikes on Robotyne and Mala Tokmachka. 136 UAVs attacked Huliaipole, Levadne, Robotyne, Mala Tokmachka, Malynivka and Novoandriivka. There were 13 MLRS attacks on Mala Tokmachka and Robotyne and 232 artillery strikes on the territories of Huliaipole, Novoandriivka, Mala Tokmachka, Robotyne, Levadne and Malynivka. There were 7 reports of residential buildings being destroyed.

It is reported that the occupiers launched 5 assaults towards Orikhiv. Three assaults were near Staromaiorske, and one each near Robotyne and Mala Tokmachka.

Nearly 44 thousand families of internally displaced persons residing in Zaporizhzhia oblast received UAH 183m in state aid in April. Payments were automatically extended to 26,000 individuals.

The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine approved the first five projects for underground schools in Zaporizhzhia oblast. The first 3 schools will be built in Zaporizhzhia and another 2 in the oblast. They will serve as educational platforms for children from several districts of the regional centre and several settlements in the region.

Denise Brown, the UN Resident Coordinator in Ukraine, visited Zaporizhzhia. She discussed with local authorities the restoration of damaged infrastructure, payments to internally displaced persons, compensation for housing rentals, and organisation of the educational process in the oblast. Thanks to OCHA coordination, over 646 thousand people received humanitarian assistance in the region in 2023, including nearly 237 thousand internally displaced persons. This year, there are plans to expand the cash support program for housing rentals in the region. The possibility of reconstructing 2 schools in the city that were damaged by enemy shelling is also being considered.

Representatives of UNHCR visited Zaporizhzhia. They familiarized themselves with the situation regarding child protection in the region and discussed ways of cooperation with local authorities and NGOs. They also discussed the status of 705 children who were left without parental care and were placed in families and specialized institutions.

Mykolaiv oblast

Yesterday, 30 April, the enemy shelled Kutsurub community twice. Agricultural machinery, economic structures, and the fence of a private household were damaged in the village of Dmytrivka. The enemy also conducted artillery shelling at the waters of Ochakiv community.

Volunteers from the Southern Rays of Hope charitable foundation from Mykolaiv are preparing Easter meals for Ukrainian soldiers. Three hundred kilograms of homemade sausage, lard spread, and a thousand Easter cakes will be provided to soldiers who are undergoing treatment and stationed at the front lines.

Odesa oblast

The enemy launched another attack on Odesa during the night of 1 May, using ballistic missiles from the territory of the temporarily occupied Crimea. The impact resulted in the destruction of administrative and residential buildings, as well as medical and educational institutions. It was later revealed that one of the buildings damaged housed the State Archive of Odesa oblast. Additionally, the local office of the Authorized Representative of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine for Human Rights was damaged.

According to Oleh Kiper, Head of Odesa Regional Military Administration, three people were killed and three others were injured during the attack. 2 May, 2024, was declared a day of mourning in Odesa oblast due to the tragedy caused by the missile strikes resulting in loss of life.

The number of fatalities from the attack on Odesa on 29 April has risen to 6. Today, a man passed away in the hospital.

Kherson oblast

Yesterday the enemy attacked Antonivka, Kizomys, Inzhenerne, Novotiahynka, Prydniprovske, Veletenske, Tiahynka, Mykolaivka, Olhivka, Novooleksandrivka, Lvove, Dudchany and the city of Kherson. 8 private houses, a cellular tower, and a shop were damaged.

It is reported that the enemy attempted two unsuccessful assaults on the left bank of the temporarily occupied Dnipro in Kherson oblast. After suffering losses, they withdrew to their original positions. There were 75 reconnaissance UAVs detected over the past day. Confirmed enemy losses amounted to 99 occuppiers and 12 pieces of equipment and military hardware.

Residents of temporarily occupied Hola Prystan, Kokhany and Hladkivka are being forcibly evicted by russian occupation authorities. This allows the occupiers to vacate homes and apartments for the accommodation of russian military personnel, pseudo-administration employees, and russians wishing to move to the settlements.

Kakhovka Military City Administration reported that russian military personnel abducted 51-year-old Hennadii Rashevskyi from the temporarily occupied Kakhovka. They took Hennadii from his home on 28 April and his whereabouts are still unknown. Previously, the man had been taken by russian military personnel, and searches had been conducted multiple times at his place of residence.

Residents of Kherson received 20,000 food parcels in April from the Ukrainian Red Cross. Since the beginning of 2024, the Red Cross team has been supporting vulnerable population groups. Food parcels are provided to elderly people over the age of 60 and people with disabilities.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

Brigadier General Volodymyr Shvediuk, Commander of the West Operational Command, was on a working visit to Volyn. The RMA held a joint meeting regarding the protection and strengthening of the border within the oblast, provision of the Armed Forces and regional programs of support for veterans. Joint tasks and measures were discussed with the participation of representatives of the defence and security sector of the oblast.

Lutsk City Council reported that the community sent a new Mitsubishi L200, Mavic 3 T, Mavic 3 drones, Piranha and Ecoflow Delta 2 drones for the Lubart Azov battalion.

Zakarpattia oblast

The RMA held a meeting with business representatives and employers. They discussed specifics of returning veterans to the workplace.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

In the Memorial Square of Ivano-Frankivsk, defenders from Prykarpattia, who were killed fighting for Ukraine, were honoured with a commemorative Bell of Remembrance. In addition, state and regional awards were presented to families of the fallen defenders.

Ivano-Frankivsk City Council reported that the community sent 30 FPV drones and Mavic drones to the 128th Separate Mountain Assault Brigade.

The City Council added that 36 communal workers of the community returned from Donetsk oblast, where they were building fortifications.

Lviv oblast

The Lviv Oblast – for the Armed Forces forum has started in Lviv oblast. It aims to increase the level of defence capability of the entire country. Local budgets were discussed during the event. Namely, how much funds are allocated by communities to support armed formations.

The RMA held a meeting of the Coordination Center. On the agenda is the issue of solving problematic factors in the functioning of places of temporary residence. After all, the average indicator of compliance with the defined standards of such centres in Lviv oblast is 72%. Another challenge is the adaptation of places of residence for people with reduced mobility.

In the first 3 months of this year, communities of Lviv oblast directed over UAH 500m to support military formations. UAH 350m was allocated from the regional budget for the first four months of the year for the needs of soldiers. Of these, over UAH 200m are exclusively for drones and combat drones of various types.

At Drohobych Pedagogical University, students, teachers and management started the Franco-Drone charity project, which raised funds for quadcopters. In March and April they managed to raise UAH 125,000. They have already bought 5 FPV drones. Another 5 drones will soon be bought with the help of a local volunteer. All equipment will be sent to the soldiers at the front.

Stepan Horonyi, military serviceman of  the military unit A7087 from Yavoriv region, was posthumously awarded with the Defender of the Fatherland medal the President of Ukraine. The award was presented to the family of the fallen soldier. The defender was killed on 9 September 2022 in Kherson oblast.

Rivne oblast

Another message was received from an anonymous person about the mining of the building of the Rivne RMA and the Regional Council. According to the protocol, the workers were evacuated. Special services conducted an inspection of the premises. No explosive objects were found.

The RMA reported that the Army of Restoration government project is being implemented in Rivne oblast. Thus, in Kostopil community, the renovation of five houses in which IDPs will live has been completed.

Ternopil oblast

94 defenders will receive UAH 10,000 each from the budget of Ternopil community for equipment and technical means. Since the beginning of the year, 2,160 servicemen of the community have already received such assistance.

Volunteers of the Army Aid from Ternopil centre went on another trip to the defenders in Donetsk, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia and Dnipropetrovsk oblasts. Ternopil residents sent parcels for the military. The city council loaded the buses with essentials for the military, namely, mobile rebs, starlinks, drones, shoes, sleeping bags, electric generators, batteries, lanterns, various goodies, snacks, etc.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

The RMA reported that in the oblast, a curfew has been established from midnight to 3am on the night from Saturday, 4 May to Sunday, 5 May.

Chernivtsi oblast

The RMA presented certificates to Oleksandr Hrozynskyi, Serhii Lohvinenko, Stanislav Makovii Illicha, Vasyl Mateichuk, Ivan Savchuk and Andrii Tsurkan, Bukovyna rescuers who performed tasks in liberated territories and oblasts where active hostilities are ongoing.

Dmytro Kuleba, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, announced that the Council of Europe began preparations for the creation of a special tribunal to hold russia accountable for war crimes.

Norway allocates another $600m to support Ukraine. Most of these funds will be directed to strengthening the air defence of Ukraine.

Evika Silinya, Prime Minister of Latvia, announced that the country will hand Ukraine a new package of weapons, stressing that the new weapons will help Ukraine to improve air defence and reconnaissance capabilities. The aid package will include, in particular, close-range anti-aircraft guns and surveillance drones.

Arturas Zharnovskis, Head of the Lithuanian program for the reconstruction of Ukraine Co-create Future of Ukraine, announced that they plan to build new bomb shelter schools in Odesa, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Mykolaiv, Sumy and Chernihiv oblasts. According to him, the construction of such schools will take place “from scratch”, that is, in those places where there were no shelters before. The new facilities will also provide anti-radiation protection.

The US Senate approved a draft law banning the import of uranium from the russian federation. The document must now be signed by President Joe Biden.

Andrii Yermak, Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, had a phone conversation with Chang Ho-jin, new Director of the Office for National Security under the President of the Republic of Korea. They coordinated joint actions in the context of upcoming international events, specifically in the Asia-Pacific region.

Kristo Ann Vaga, member of Parliament of Estonia, is cycling from Tallinn to Kyiv to raise funds for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Thus, together with the 69th Sniffing Brigade Ukrainian-Estonian charity organisation, the deputy plans to raise €50,000 for the purchase of drones and cars for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
