It has been the 1502  th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 4 pm:   

On 5 April, the aggressor has launched 41 attacks toward the positions of the Defense Forces.

Artillery shelling of border areas continues. Today, in Sumy oblast, the settlements of Bachivsk, Iskryskivshchyna, Boiaro-Lezhachi, Volfyne, Rohizne, Korenok, Khodyne, Ryzhivka, and Havrylova Sloboda were affected.

  • Towards Northern Sloboda and Kursk: The adversary attacked the positions of our defenders once and carried out 34 shellings of settlements and troop positions, one of which involved a multiple launch rocket system (MLRS).
  • Towards Southern Sloboda: The adversary stormed the positions of our units once in the direction of Starytsia.
  • Towards Kupiansk: The adversary made three attempts to improve its tactical position in the direction of Novoosynove. One combat engagement is ongoing.
  • Towards Lyman and Sloviansk: The enemy conducted no offensive operations.
  • Towards Kramatorsk: The enemy attacked the positions of our defenders twice in the area of Orikhovo-Vasylivka.
  • Towards Kostiantynivka: The invaders carried out 12 attacks near Kostiantynivka, Kleban-Byk, Pleshchiivka, Illinivka, Stepanivka, Novopavlivka, and Sofiivka. Two combat engagements are still ongoing.
  • Towards Pokrovsk: Since the start of the day, the occupiers have attempted to push our warriors from their positions 11 times in the areas of Bilytske, Rodynske, Pokrovsk, Rivne, Udachne, Muravka, and Filiia. Two combat engagements are still ongoing.
  • Towards Oleksandrivka: The enemy went on the offensive five times in the areas of Sichneve and Krasnohirske, and toward Sosnivka, Verbove, and Kalynivske.
  • Towards Huliaipole: The Defense Forces successfully repelled four enemy attacks toward Zaliznychne, Olenokostiantynivka, Huliaipilske, and Zelene. The enemy launched airstrikes in the areas of Varvarivka, Tsvitkove, Verkhnia Tersa, Huliaipilske, Kopani, Zaliznychne, Novoselivka, and Dolynka.
  • Towards Orikhiv: The enemy conducted no offensive operations but launched airstrikes on the areas of Komyshuvakha and Novoiakovlivka.
  • Towards Kherson: The enemy conducted two futile assault actions toward the Antonivka Bridge and near Bilohrudyi Island.

In other directions, there are no significant changes in the situation. No enemy attempts to advance have been recorded. Ukrainian troops continue to exhaust the enemy along the entire line of contact and in the rear.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

On 5 April, there were 149 combat engagements.

Towards Southern Sloboda: Russian troops stormed the positions of the Defense Forces seven times in the areas of Vovchansk, Okhrimivka, and Ambarne, as well as in the direction of Bochkove.

Towards Kupiansk: The occupiers carried out nine attacks near Kurylivka, Pishchane, Kivsharivka, Novoplatonivka, Borivska Andriivka, and Novoosynove.

Around 09:30, Russians struck Velykyi Burluk with two Geran-2 type drones, reported the head of the Kupiansk District Military Administration, Andriy Kanashevych. As a result of the attack, private houses were damaged.

Viktor Kovalenko, Head of Zolochiv community, reports that at 06:45, Russian troops once again attacked Liutivka with two FPV drones. As a result of the strikes, a private house, outbuildings, and power grids were damaged; there were no injuries. According to Kovalenko, 153 residents have been evacuated from Liutivka in the last two weeks alone.

In Malo-Danylivka community, a strike was recorded in one of the settlements. The attacks destroyed residential buildings and damaged windows, facades, and outbuildings. Preliminarily, no casualties have been reported.

Russian aviation has been striking Klynova-Novoselivka for the third consecutive day, Viktor Kovalenko stated. Around 03:30 on April 5, an airstrike reportedly destroyed a house and a shed, while five more houses, outbuildings, and power grids sustained damage. There were no injuries.

Over the past 24 hours, russian strikes targeted Kharkiv and 13 other settlements in the region. Eleven people were injured as a result of the shelling, including a child.

In Kharkiv, men aged 70, 64, and 39, women aged 66 and 95, and an 11-year-old girl sustained injuries. In Prudyanka (Derhachi community), a 59-year-old man and a 67-year-old woman were injured. Between Klynova-Novoselivka and Liutivka (Zolochiv community), two men aged 51 and 70 were wounded. In Shevchenkove, a 72-year-old woman was injured.

Additionally, medics provided assistance to a 38-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman who were wounded on April 3 during the shelling of Tsupivka (Derhachi community).

In the village of Petrivske (Balakliia community), a 70-year-old man was killed by the explosion of an unidentified device.

russian troops attacked Nemyshlyanskyi, Slobidskyi, and Shevchenkivskyi districts of Kharkiv. Furthermore, around 23:10 on April 4, the occupiers struck Zolochiv with a drone, preliminarily identified as a Geran type. Six private houses, four outbuildings, and power grids were damaged. No injuries were reported in this specific strike.

To strike Kharkiv oblast, russians deployed six KABs, 11 Geran-2 type drones, one “Molniya” drone, eight FPV drones, and 23 unidentified UAVs.

Civilian infrastructure was damaged. In Kharkiv, the strikes hit three private houses, three apartment buildings, three dormitories, and three cars. In Bohodukhiv region, vehicles, private houses, power grids, trucks, and a garage were affected. In Kupiansk region, a private house in Podoly was damaged; in Kharkiv region, two houses in Prudyanka; and in Chuhuiv region, a house in Chuhuiv and a car in Bile Kolodiaz.

In Shevchenkivskyi district of Kharkiv, a Shahed type drone struck a tree near residential buildings. The explosion damaged the glazing of three dormitories, three high-rise buildings, and three cars, as well as the medical center building of the Kharkiv National Medical University. No injuries were reported.

The transit evacuation point in Lozova received 155 people over the past 24 hours. Since its opening, a total of 26,732 people have been registered at the point.

Donetsk oblast

Towards Oleksandrivka, the Defense Forces stopped nine Russian assaults near Oleksandrohrad, Sichneve, and Verbove. Towards Kostiantynivka, 29 combat engagements were recorded, with another 26 assaults occurring towards Pokrovsk.

russian troops have intensified airstrikes on Kramatorsk, Sloviansk, and Defense Forces’ positions along the line of contact. According to Dmytro Zaporozhets, spokesperson for the 11th Army Corps, the russian army is attempting to pressure both civilians and the military due to a lack of success in these sectors of the front.

In March, the occupiers also increased the intensity of infantry assaults towards Pokrovsk. According to Taras Myshak, an officer of the 59th Separate Assault Brigade, Russian units are attempting to infiltrate through the Defense Forces’ positions and accumulate in the rear for further attacks.

On the night of April 5, the Defense Forces struck a concentration of Russian manpower near Yalynske in temporarily occupied Donetsk oblast. Occupier losses are currently being clarified.

Around 13:00, the russian army dropped two FAB-250 aerial bombs on Sloviansk. The strike hit private houses in the central part of the city.

On the night of April 5, russian troops twice attacked Kramatorsk community with drones. Around 00:16, a drone struck the private sector, and at 05:00, another hit a shopping center, according to the Kramatorsk City Military Administration.

Throughout April 4, police recorded 1,581 Russian strikes along the frontline and residential sectors of Donetsk oblast.

Seven settlements came under fire: Dobropillia, Druzhkivka, Kostiantynivka, Kramatorsk, Sloviansk, Oleksandrivka, and Virivka.

In Kostiantynivka, one person was killed and another was injured as a result of an FPV drone attack. A civilian car was damaged.

In Dobropillia, a civilian was wounded. In Kramatorsk, drone attacks destroyed a private house and a shopping center. In Sloviansk, an FPV drone damaged a civilian car, while in Druzhkivka, an apartment building and a private house were affected. The Russians directed a Molniya-2 drone at Oleksandrivka, damaging three homes.

Due to the intensification of shelling in Kramatorsk and Sloviansk, the flow of evacuees from Donetsk oblast through the transit center in Lozova has increased by approximately 100 people per day. The center currently receives about 250 people daily; humanitarian worker rotations have been implemented, and they are prepared to deploy a tent city if necessary.

In temporarily occupied Donetsk Oblast, russians plan to develop so-called “military-historical tourism” and create routes to “places of military glory,” according to the Center for Countering Disinformation.

In Spasko-Mykhailivka starosta district of Novodonetske community, the population has decreased by nearly half since the start of the full-scale war—from over 1,000 to 560 people. According to the local starosta, the frontline is approximately 25 kilometers away.

Luhansk oblast

Over the past 24 hours, russian troops carried out seven assaults towards Lyman and Sloviansk—combat operations continued near five settlements. In Luhansk oblast, the occupiers used mortars eight times, struck twice with automatic grenade launchers, and also deployed tube artillery. russians directed 22 drones toward the positions of Ukrainian defenders.

In the so-called “pr,” the occupation authorities have extended the deadline for re-registering vehicles with russian license plates until September 30. This applies to cars with Ukrainian plates as well as those issued by the occupation administration after 2014. The previous deadline ended on December 31, 2025, but was extended due to low public compliance.

Additionally, starting September 1, conduct grades will become mandatory in schools within the so-called “lpr.” These will be assigned based on discipline, social activity, “lawful behavior,” and children’s participation in propaganda events.

The occupiers are changing the labor compensation system for miners, linking salaries to the volume of coal extracted. This mechanism is likely a scheme to reduce payouts, as full-scale coal production is currently maintained only at the Bilorichenska mine. Furthermore, in occupied Luhansk oblast, the forced mobilization of previously dismissed miners has begun, with plans to send up to half of the industrial workforce to the war.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

A Veteran Care Space has opened at Tsybli All-Ukrainian Treatment and Rehabilitation Center in Kyiv Oblast. Veterans can now receive comprehensive support directly at the medical facility, saving time and resources otherwise spent visiting multiple institutions, according to the Ministry of Veterans Affairs.

In Kyiv oblast, energy workers who labored under extreme conditions throughout the winter were honored, the Regional Military Administration (OVA) reported. In collaboration with DTEK Kyiv Regional Grids and Ukrzaliznytsia, the Train of Light gratitude project was launched—a symbolic conclusion to the heating season and an opportunity to recognize those holding the energy front.

On April 4, Kyiv bid farewell to Tymofii Anufriiev (callsign “Eney”), a fighter with the russian Volunteer Corps. He was the son of renowned Odesa conceptualist artist Serhii Anufriiev and art curator Kateryna Chala, and had long lived in Odesa. He fell in battle on January 1, 2026. Approximately fifty relatives, comrades, and friends gathered at Baikove Cemetery to pay their respects.

The exhibition Target Destroyed: The Skies of Kyiv Region opened at the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War. The exposition focuses on the events of February–April 2022, chronicling the struggle for air superiority over the region during the first days of the full-scale invasion.

On April 5, the weekly Don’t Be Silent, Captivity Kills! rally took place in Kyiv. Relatives and loved ones of prisoners of war and the missing, along with those who have returned from Russian captivity, gathered in the city center near the “Zoloti Vorota” metro station.

Zhytomyr oblast

In Korosten, efforts continue to mitigate the consequences of the Russian strike on April 3. The explosions resulted in the death of a 70-year-old woman. Eleven others were injured, including six children. Currently, eight people remain hospitalized in moderate condition, while three are receiving outpatient treatment.

More than 50 temporary housing spots have been rapidly prepared for those left homeless by the destruction. Throughout April 4 and 5, over 200 workers and dozens of specialized vehicles have been deployed to clear debris and conduct emergency repairs.

Sumy oblast

Sumy Regional Organisation of Ukrainian Red Cross Society reported that on 4 April, two enemy missiles struck Raky village in Popivka community. A 63-year-old woman is in a critical condition as a result of the strike. Fifteen houses were also damaged.

Mayor Mykola Noha said that in Shostka community, russian forces carried out an air strike overnight. No casualties were reported preliminarily. An infrastructure facility and two multi-storey residential buildings were damaged.

Sumy Regional Organisation of Ukrainian Red Cross Society informed that in central Sumy, an employee of Ukrainian Red Cross discovered a drone on the road. The munition was located near a vehicle wheel. Explosive ordnance specialists confirmed it was an undetonated explosive device.

According to the City Military Administration, A 52-year-old man was injured in Sumy as a result of a “Molniya” attack. He is receiving medical treatment in hospital. Following a russian UAV strike on a car park, two passenger vehicles were damaged.

The Regional Military Administration reported that in Sumy, the number of injured as a result of russian shelling during the night of 4 April has risen to 29, including 10 adults and 19 children. As a result of a daytime attack on 4 April, a man and a woman were also injured. russian forces carried out a series of strikes on Sumy city, hitting residential areas and a 16-storey building.

Additionally, five more people were injured across the oblast during daytime UAV attacks:

  • in Popivka community, a 65-year-old woman was injured by a missile strike, and a 66-year-old woman was also affected;
  • in Svesa community, a 69-year-old man was injured when a UAV struck a passenger car;
  • in Hlukhiv community, a 25-year-old woman and a 23-year-old man were injured when a drone hit a vehicle.

A 48-year-old woman sought medical assistance after being injured on 3 April as a result of guided aerial bomb strikes in Shostka community.

Over the past day, from the morning of 4 April to the morning of 5 April, russian forces carried out more than 60 attacks on 35 settlements across 18 territorial communities of the oblast. The highest number of attacks was recorded in Sumy and Shostka regions. The enemy used mortars, artillery, FPV drones, UAVs, guided aerial bombs, and conducted a missile strike. Air raid alerts in the oblast lasted for 23 hours and 6 minutes over the day.

Civilian infrastructure facilities were damaged and destroyed:

  • in Shostka community, residential buildings, a multi-storey building, and a vehicle were damaged;
  • in Hlukhiv community, a passenger car was damaged;
  • in Esman community, a private residential house was destroyed;
  • in Svesa community, outbuildings were destroyed, and private houses, a vehicle, and civilian infrastructure facilities were damaged;
  • in Seredyna-Buda community, a private residential house and civilian infrastructure facilities were destroyed;
  • in Berezivka community, a private residential house and outbuildings were destroyed;
  • in Znob-Novhorodske community, civilian infrastructure facilities were damaged;
  • in Khutir-Mykhailivskyi community, civilian infrastructure facilities were damaged;
  • in Konotop community, a non-residential building, administrative buildings, multi-apartment residential buildings, a passenger car, and civilian infrastructure facilities were damaged;
  • in Sumy community, multi-apartment residential buildings, non-residential buildings, civilian infrastructure facilities, and vehicles were damaged;
  • in Velyka Pysarivka community, a private passenger car was damaged;
  • in Chernechchyna community, a civilian infrastructure facility was damaged;
  • in Popivka community, a non-residential building, private houses, and civilian infrastructure facilities were damaged.

Volunteers of the First Sumy Humanitarian Headquarters evacuated twenty adult goats and nearly as many kids from the border village of Spaske. The owners had refused to evacuate without their animals, even after mandatory evacuation had been announced nearly a year earlier.

Chernihiv oblast

Viacheslav Chaus, Head of the Regional Military Administration, reported that on 4 April, russian forces attacked Snovsk by Heran-type UAVs. A man born in 1985 was killed. A residential house, a vehicle, and an agricultural enterprise were also damaged. Five hectares of grass caught fire.

In the morning of 4 April, an FPV drone struck a vehicle delivering bread in a village of Novhorod-Siverskyi community.

In Chernihiv, a garage facility was damaged as a result of a Heran UAV strike. The fire at the impact site was extinguished.

Chernihiv Border Guard Detachment informed that over the course of 4 April, russian forces attacked four border communities of Chernihiv oblast: Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka, Horodnia, and Snovsk. The enemy carried out shelling using mortars (20 explosions) and tube artillery (8 explosions), conducted a UAV strike of Herbera type (1 explosion), FPV drone strikes (17 explosions), and dropped explosive devices from UAVs (2 explosions).

On 4 April, veteran competitions in adaptive sports for male and female veterans began in Chernihiv. The event will last two days. According to Viktoriia Kalmykova, Head of the public organisation “Veteran Community of Ukraine ‘Sercevir’,” 340 participants joined the competitions. Competitions include disciplines such as team bench press, rowing, aerobyke, table tennis, and small-bore rifle shooting.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of the Regional Council, reported that the occupiers attacked the area using FPV drones and artillery. Strikes targeted the regional centre, Marhanets, Myrove, Pokrovske rural, and Chervonohryhorivka communities. A private house and a vehicle were damaged.

The enemy continued attacks using drones and artillery, targeting the regional centre, Marhanets, Pokrovske rural, and Chervonohryhorivka communities. Fires broke out. Two multi-storey residential buildings and four private houses, an outbuilding, a kindergarten, nine vehicles, a fire station, two petrol stations, and an enterprise were damaged.

The occupiers also struck Zelendolsk community by FPV drones.

Poltava oblast

The Regional Military Administration informed that during the night, an enemy UAV fell in an open area in Poltava region. The blast wave damaged window glazing and the roof of a building at one of the enterprises.

Cherkasy oblast

According to Ihor Taburets, Head of the Regional Military Administration, during the night, air defence forces destroyed two russian UAVs.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, on 4 April, the Defence Forces of Ukraine repelled 14 russian attacks in Huliaipole and Orikhiv regions. Combat engagements took place near Varvarivka, Zaliznychne, Huliaipilske, Pryluky, Olenokostiantynivka, Myrne and Stepove.

The RMA reported that russian forces carried out more than 880 strikes on 41 cities and villages in Zaporizhzhia oblast.

Mykolaiv oblast

According to Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, on 4 April, russian forces attacked Bereznehuvate community by a strike drone, injuring a couple, a 45-year-old man and a 34-year-old woman. Both were hospitalised.

The same day, russian troops attacked Kutsurub and Ochakiv communities by 2 FPV drones. In the morning, they struck Ochakiv community, preliminarily by MLRS, damaging a vehicle. There were no casualties reported.

Over the past day, 6 Shahed-131/136 strike UAVs and various decoy drones were shot down or suppressed in the oblast.

Odesa oblast

Serhii Lysak, Head of Odesa CMA, said that as a result of a russian attack in Odesa, residential buildings in Khadzhibeyskyi district were damaged. 3 people were injured, an 86-year-old man and woman among them. 2 of the injured were hospitalised.

As of 7am, preliminary reports indicate that around 250 windows and 25 balconies were damaged, with 4 balconies destroyed.

Kherson oblast

Based on the information provided by Kherson RMA, a 45-year-old woman who had been injured in a russian shelling of Korabelnyi district of Kherson at around 5pm the previous day died in hospital.

At approximately 9am, a civilian vehicle hit a russian mine (prianyk-type) in Korabelnyi district. A 54-year-old man sustained blast injuries and a concussion.

At around 6:20am, russian forces attacked Chornobaivka by a UAV. A 40-year-old woman was injured, suffering blast and closed head injuries, barotrauma and injuries to her head and limbs.

At approximately 11:30pm the previous day, a russian strike UAV hit Korabelnyi district of Kherson. An 80-year-old woman was injured, sustaining blast and closed head injuries, as well as a concussion.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

The National Police of Volyn oblast reported that on the eve of Easter, pre-Easter support events for children of police veterans and families of law enforcement officers who went missing were held at the Mental Health Center in Lutsk.

Zakarpattia oblast

Yevhen Bendas, from the village of Holubyne, Polyanska community, was killed at the front while performing a combat mission in Kupiansk region.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

An annotation board dedicated to Hero Andrii Tkachenko was opened. A memorial sign was installed on the facade of the S. Bandera Center for Patriotic Education. Andrii Tkachenko, Military Pilot, Lieutenant Colonel of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Commander of the 114th Tactical Aviation Brigade, was killed on 8 March, 2024 in the skies of Donetsk oblast during a combat mission.

Lviv oblast

Over UAH 626m has been allocated in Lviv oblast to support veterans in 2026. Almost 80% of this amount is provided by territorial communities. This was discussed during the fourth Dialogue with Communities within the framework of the work of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities.

Rivne oblast

The 3rd evacuation train from Donetsk oblast this year has arrived in Rivne oblast. 15 people who were forced to leave their homes due to the war arrived in the region. All the arrivals are planned to be resettled in settlements of Varasky region.

Ternopil oblast

On the eve of Easter in Ternopil, Easter baskets were prepared for families of Heroes, missing defenders, as well as veterans with disabilities of groups I and II as a result of the war. 1050 sets were consecrated to be handed over to each family as a sign of gratitude, memory and support. In the coming weeks, these holiday sets will be delivered directly to people.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

A 3-day training course was held in Khmelnytskyi at the Leadership School for veterans. With the help of trainers and experts, they studied theoretical foundations – the specifics of political processes, simulated elections. Veterans also analyzed successful Ukrainian and global experience of veteran leadership. Participants learned how to build a team, partnerships, interact with authorities, scale projects, and communicate in the public space.

Chernivtsi oblast

The RMA reported that Junior Sergeant Ivan Teren was awarded with the III degree For Courage Order (posthumously).

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Kaia Kallas, EU High Representative, announced that the European Union is providing Ukraine with an additional €80m from the proceeds of frozen russian assets.
