War in Ukraine today: latest news, 1 February 2025 (photo)

It has been the 1074 th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 4 pm:   

On 1 February, there were 71 combat engagements in the frontline. Ukrainian defenders are stopping the enemy, holding the line and disrupting the enemy’s plans. At the same time, the occupiers continue to focus their efforts on Pokrovsk, Kupiansk, Lyman and in Kursk oblast. 

The border towns and villages of the country continue to suffer from russian artillery shelling. Zaliznyi Mist and Mykolaivka in Chernihiv oblast and Khliborob in Sumy oblast were hit. 

In the Kupiansk, the enemy made 15 attempts to advance towards Ukrainian positions in the vicinity of Topoli, Dvorichna, Petropavlivka, Stepova Novosilka, Hlushkivka, Zahryzove and Lozova. Ukrainian defenders repelled 11 attacks, four combat engagements are ongoing.  

Towards Lyman, the aggressor attacked the positions of Ukrainian troops 12 times near Novoiehorivka, Terny, Yampolivka, Kolodiazi, Torske and towards Novomykhailivka. Four firefights are currently ongoing. Enemy aircraft fired unguided missiles at Zelenyi Hai.

In the Siversk, the Armed Forces of Ukraine repelled three attacks by enemy troops near Verkhnekamianske and Bilohorivka, with one firefight still ongoing.

In the Kramatorsk, Ukrainian defenders repelled two enemy attacks. Three firefights are still ongoing.  russian units are active in the vicinity of Chasiv Yar and Bila Hora.

In the Toretsk, the enemy tried to advance five times in the vicinity of Toretsk. Two firefights are currently underway. 

Pokrovsk, the enemy is still active. Twenty-two clashes of varying intensity broke out there. Ukrainian troops are repelling enemy attacks in the vicinity of Zelene Pole, Yelizavetivka, Promin, Zvirove, Udachne, Uspenivka, Novooleksandrivka, Sribne and Dachne. Eight more firefights are currently ongoing.

 Novopavlivka, the occupiers tried to break through once near Kostiantynopil, but were stopped by Ukrainian defenders. 

In the Huliaipole, the aggressor attacked the positions of Ukrainian defenders near Novosilka and was repelled. 

In the Orikhiv, two battles are taking place in the vicinity of Shcherbaky and Nesterianka. 

In the Kharkiv and Kherson, the enemy did not conduct any active operations. 

In Kursk oblast, Ukrainian defenders repelled three invaders’ attacks, and one firefight is still ongoing. In addition, the enemy launched seven airstrikes using nine guided bombs. 

Ukrainian troops are depleting the enemy along the entire frontline and in the rear.

According to the State Emergency Service, a russian strike on Poltava killed 8 people, including a child. The number of people injured in the strike has risen to 17, including 4 children aged 3 months, 2, 8 and 12. 

According to the Air Force of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, on the night of 1 February, Russia launched a combined attack on the territory of Ukraine with missiles of various types, as well as Shahed-type attack UAVs and other types of imitator drones. Seven Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles, seven Iskander-K cruise missiles, eight X-22/32 cruise missiles from Tu-22M3 aircraft, four Kalibr cruise missiles, eight X-101/X-55 cruise missiles, 10 guided missiles, two X-31P guided missiles, and 123 Shahed attack UAVs and simulator drones were used.

Kharkiv oblast

Frontline

Towards Kupiansk, the russian army made 15 attempts to advance towards Ukrainian positions in the vicinity of Topoli, Dvorichna, Petropavlivka, Stepova Novosilka, Hlushkivka, Zahryzove and Lozova. Ukrainian troops repelled 11 attacks, and four firefights are ongoing. According to the General Staff, russian troops did not conduct any active operations towards Kharkiv.

Oleh Syniehubov, Рead of the RMA, says that there were twoenemy attacks towards Kharkiv yesterday in the vicinity of Vovchansk.

There were six occupiers’ attacks towards Kupiansk. Ukrainian defence forces repelled the enemy’s assault in the areas of Lozova, Bohuslavka, Pishchane, Petropavlivka and Zahryzove. 

Shelling

One person was killed and four were injured as a result of a russian attack on Kholodnohirsky district of Kharkiv in the morning of 1 February. A fire broke out in a private house at the site of the UAV hit. As a result of the strike, 20 buildings were damaged, 90 windows smashed, and four more high-rise buildings damaged by the blast wave.

At around 10:00, the enemy used a UAV to attack Donetske community of Izium region. A dormitory building and private houses were damaged.

In Kharkiv region, a garage and 2 cars in the village of Cherkaska Lozova of Malodanylivka community were burning as a result of a Shahed UAV shelling at 07:30. As a result of the fall of a Shahed UAV, production facilities in the village of Novovodolazka were damaged.

The day before, the enemy launched 17 UAVs and 6 missiles at civilians and infrastructure.

In the evening of 31 January, a building of the village council in Pisky-Radkivski in Izium region was damaged as a result of shelling from Uragan MLRS.

In Kupiansk, on the afternoon of 31 January, a drone strike damaged the facade, summer terrace and windows of a cafe building. In the morning, an outbuilding burned down in the town as a result of shelling, injuring an 84-year-old woman and a 46-year-old man.

The road surface in the village of Osynove Kup’ was damaged as a result of shelling by a Molniya UAV.

 Other

20 people were evacuated from Kupiansk and Borova directions.

Oleh Syniehubov, Head of the RMA, reports that 128 families with children are to be evacuated from the settlements of Kindrashivka and Velykoburlutska communities. 26 such families were moved to safe places.

Donetsk oblast

Situation at the frontline

The Khortytsia operational and strategic group of troops reported that soldiers of the 5th separate assault brigade destroyed enemy Orlan UAVs, weapons, infantry and occupiers’ hideouts towards Kramatorsk.

the General Staff reports that in January, russian troops towards Pokrovsk lost more than 15,000 people, destroyed more than a hundred pieces of heavy equipment, including 14 tanks, and 320 vehicles. Fourteen tanks, 25 armoured combat vehicles, 83 vehicles, 49 cannons and mortars, and one multiple rocket launcher system were damaged. 

As reported by the 110th separate mechanised brigade named after Marko Bezruchko. in Velyka Novosilka, the Defence Forces are destroying assault groups of the russian army. russian troops are not conducting assaults with the use of armoured vehicles and large numbers of infantry. Small enemy groups are trying to move through the village.

The Khortytsia unit informs that near Verkhnekamianske towards Siverskr, artillery and UAV pilots destroyed two russian armoured personnel carriers and almost 20 invaders. Towards Siversk, enemy attacks were aimed at the fortifications in Bilohorivka and Spirne. Near Verkhnekamianske, russians tried to attack with armoured vehicles.

 Shelling

Vadym Filashkin, Head of Donetsk Regional Military Administration, informs that russian troops shelled Pokrovsk once again, killing a 55-year-old man, and a 63-year-old man was wounded and taken to hospital.

Vadym Filashkin, Head of the RMA, informs that three people were wounded in Donetsk oblast on 31 January. Two people were wounded in Pokrovsk, another person was wounded in Katerynivka. In total, russians fired 17 times. A total of 498 people, including 47 children, were evacuated from the frontline.

Donetsk police reported that nine settlements in Donetsk oblast were shelled by the russian army yesterday: Kostiantynivka, Kramatorsk, Pokrovsk; the village of Droisheve; the villages of Ivanopillia, Katerynivka, Serhiivka, Starodubivka, and Stinky. The enemy damaged 61 civilian objects, including 41 residential buildings.

The russians attacked Pokrovsk eight times: with FAB-250 bombs, Smerch multiple rocket launchers, drones and artillery. Two civilians were injured, and seven apartment buildings, two hospitals, a church, and a civilian truck were damaged.

In Katerynivka, Kramatorsk region, one person was wounded and three private houses damaged.

Four private houses in Droisheve were damaged by FAB-250 bombs, and 10 households in Starodubivka of Mykolaivka community were damaged.

 

russian troops shelled Kostiantynivka with artillery, damaging an apartment building and four private houses, an administrative building, a bus station, a shop, cars, a gas pipeline, and six power lines. There were seven damaged houses in Ivanopillia and three in Stinky.

The occupiers dropped a 500 kg bomb on Serhiivka in Udachne community, damaging two private houses and an infrastructure facility.

Pokrovsk city military administration reported that in the evening of 30 January, at around 22:00, the russian army destroyed a hospital and damaged the perinatal unit in Pokrovsk.

Other 

About three thousand people remain in the city of Myrnohrad, Donetsk oblast, where the enemy is two kilometres away, and all children have been taken away, the regional police reported. It is noted that mobile phone service is almost non-existent in the city, and police officers are going door-to-door and driving around the streets with loudspeakers to announce the evacuation.

The intensive care hospital in Dobropillia is currently the only one in the entire Pokrovsk district of Donetsk oblast. According to its director Vadim Babkov, the medical facility continues to serve Dobropollia and neighbouring communities, and now also the communities that are in the frontline area: Pokrovsk, Myrnohrad and Selidove. The hospital is short of specialists due to the approaching hostilities: about a hundred employees, including highly qualified doctors, have left.

About 300 residents remain in the village of Serhiivka near Pokrovsk. Currently, fifty people a week register for evacuation in Udachne community.

A volunteer from England, 28-year-old Eddie, who was injured in Pokrovsk, is in a stable condition and is being treated in a hospital in Dnipro. He was wounded on 30 January when an occupier’s drone hit a car belonging to the NGO Base UA during the evacuation of local residents. Edward came to Ukraine from the UK in 2022 and has been volunteering for three years.

Luhansk oblast

Artem Lysogor, Head of Luhansk Regional Military Administration, informs that the enemy fired 24 times from artillery at settlements and fortifications of Ukrainian defenders in Luhansk oblast. They sent 203 drones in this direction. The russian attacks were repelled by Ukrainian defenders towards Liman and Siversk – near Novoiehorivka, Makiivka and Bilohorivka.

The so-called ‘government of the lpr’ acknowledged that after almost 11 years of occupation, the region’s housing and communal facilities are in a state of disrepair. The average level of deterioration of critical infrastructure is currently around 80%. This is without taking into account the destruction caused by russians during the 2022 assaults in Siverskodonetsk, Lysychansk, Rubizhne, Kreminna, Hirske, Zolote, and Popasna.

The military hospital of the russian army in Antratsyt resembles a prison rather than a hospital. russians themselves complain about harsh conditions. All wards have armed guards. There are more than a hundred wounded occupiers on each floor. They are allowed to go to the local shop only if they are accompanied by staff.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

Mykola Kalashnyk, Head of the RMA, reported that the enemy does not stop attacking Kyiv oblast with UAVs. The alert was raised twice at night. There were no civilian casualties.

As a result of the falling debris of a downed target in Boryspil district, a private house caught fire. The fire was extinguished. Two more private houses, outbuildings and a car were also affected. Windows were smashed, facades and roofs cut.

In Fastiv region, a fire broke out in a warehouse of a company in the area of 30 square metres as a result of falling debris. The fire was quickly extinguished.

Kyiv paid tribute to Stanyslav Prytula, Head of the Public Council at the Ukrainian State Film Agency, film producer and soldier. He was killed in action on 22 January. From the first days of the full-scale invasion, Stanyslav joined the Armed Forces and defended Ukraine on the front line.

Zhytomyr oblast

For 2025, Estonia has allocated €12 million from its budget to restore the infrastructure of the Zhytomyr oblast. The list of projects to be implemented is being finalised. A memorandum has already been signed on the comprehensive reconstruction of Malyn Children’s Art School. A project to build a shelter at the Sunny House centre has also been preliminarily agreed.

Sumy oblast

The Regional Military Administration reported that during the night, the enemy carried out an airstrike on Yunakivka community. As a result of the strike, 3 patrol police officers who were on duty in the community’s settlements were killed.

In Esman community, a house was damaged due to an enemy strike by an FPV-drone.

During the night and in the morning, russians carried out 5 shelling attacks on border areas and settlements in Sumy oblast, resulting in 12 explosions: 7 mortar strikes, 2 strikes from RPGs, and 1 strike by an FPV-drone. Two UAVs were detected and destroyed. The attacks targeted Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Esman, and Svesa communities.

Over Sumy oblast, air defence units shot down 4 enemy Shahed UAVs. Since the beginning of 2025, anti-aircraft gunners have destroyed 261 russian drones.

Sumyoblenergo reported that emergency power outage schedules were implemented in Sumy oblast due to the russian missile attack on Ukraine.

As a result of russian shelling on 31 January, a house and a car were damaged in Krasnopillia community. Another house was damaged in Shostka community.

In Sumy oblast, russians carried out 40 shelling attacks on border areas and settlements, resulting in 101 explosions: attacks with artillery (5 explosions), mortars (65 explosions), VOG dropped from UAVs (8 explosions), hits by FPV-drones (22 explosions). According to the RMA, the attacks targeted 8 border communities: Khotin, Myropilia, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Putyvl, Nova Slobidka, Esman, and Shostka.

Volodymyr Artiukh, Head of the Regional Military Administration, reported that in Sumy oblast, the use of FPV-drones by the enemy in January increased twofold, and the dropping of explosive devices from UAVs – fourfold. In January, air defence units shot down 257 Shahed/Lancet UAVs. As a result of russian shelling in January, 93 people were injured, of whom 13 died. 234 real estate objects were damaged, including 44 energy facilities, 19 gas facilities, 28 apartment buildings, 114 private houses, and 26 business entities.

Sumy Prosecutor’s Office informed that a 76-year-old woman who was injured in the attack on an apartment building on 30 January in Sumy Died in hospital. A total of ten people were killed.

The City Council reported that the number of people injured in Sumy as a result of the russian drone strike on a residential apartment building on 30 January rose to 16. Over two days, the emergency response headquarters received 153 applications for the inspection of apartments damaged by the enemy strike, and ten applications regarding damaged cars.

In just one day, residents of Sumy raised over UAH 1.3m to help those affected by the russian attack on Sumy. These funds, collected by the owners of two Telegram channels, will be used to assist the families of the deceased and injured.

Ihor Borko, Commander of the White Angels crew in Sumy, announced that since September 2024, the NGO has evacuated 531 people from the border areas of the region, including over 300 children. People from the border area are being transported in a special armoured vehicle.

Chernihiv oblast

On 31 January, russian troops attacked three border communities in Chernihiv oblast: Horodnia, Novhorod-Siverskyi, and Semenivka. There were a total of 23 explosions. The North Operational Command reported that the enemy used mortars (6 strikes), dropped explosives from UAVs (4 strikes), and used FPV-drones (13 strikes). 

As a result of the FPV-drone attack in Novhorod-Siverskyi community, a critical infrastructure facility in Buda-Vorobiivska village  was damaged. In Hremiach, one person was injured and a private house was damaged.

Chernihiv City Council reported that the city received 14 generators for critical infrastructure from the Enabel Belgian development agency. This will ensure the uninterrupted operation of the heating system even in critical power supply situations.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Council, reported that from evening till night, the enemy attacked Nikopol oblast. The occupiers used artillery and Grad rocket launchers. They targeted the regional centre, Marhanets, Myrove and Pokrovske communities. An educational institution, 2 apartment buildings, a private house, a garage and an outbuilding were damaged.

During the day, the enemy attacked Nikopol twice. They attacked with a kamikaze drone and dropped ammunition from a drone. According to updated information, a hospital was damaged as a result of the night shelling of the district centre. A 79-year-old patient sustained light injuries.  In Synelnykove district, an unused building and 2 private houses were damaged as a result of yesterday’s attack.

​​ Kirovohrad oblast

In Kropyvnytskyi, two defenders of Ukraine paid the last tribute. 

Ruslan Lebedka, a 36-year-old soldier, died in November 2023, and Yaroslav Dubrov, a 41-year-old junior sergeant, was killed in October 2024 towards Zaporizhzhia.

Poltava oblast

According to Poltava Regional Military Administration, russians attacked a residential building in Poltava. 8 people were killed, including 1 child, 17 injured, including 4 children, and 22 rescued. Psychologists from the State Emergency Service and the National Police helped 177 people, including 10 children.

A rocket attack on Poltava left six residential buildings and a kindergarten without heat supply. It was caused by a break in the network in the destroyed entrance of a multi-storey building.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Ivan Fedorov, Head of the RMA, reported that on the night of 1 February, the russian military launched 16 drones towards Zaporizhzhia oblast. As a result of the attack, an infrastructure facility, high-rise and private buildings were damaged.

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, one of the russian assaults near Novodanylivka was repelled by the Defence Forces on Orikhiv region. In Huliaipole region, russian forces twice unsuccessfully attempted to push Ukrainian soldiers from their positions in the settlements of Novopil and Novosilka.

Ivan Fedorov, Head of the RMA, reported that on 31 January, russian forces launched 514 strikes on 14 towns and villages in Zaporizhzhia oblast. Specifically, 319 drones of various types attacked Zaporizhzhia, Piatykhatky, Lobkove, Bilohiria, Shcherbaky, Huliaipole, Mala Tokmachka, Novoandriivka, Novodanylivka, Novodarivka, Malynivka and Olhivske.

Mykolaiv oblast

According to Mykolaiv RMA, Mykola Bilous, a Hero of Ukraine born in 2002 in Mykolaiv, was posthumously awarded the Gold Star Order. He was killed in 2023 while defending the country. The award was presented to his mother by the President.

There was no shelling recorded in the oblast on 31 January.

Odesa oblast

As reported by the Prosecutor’s Office of Odesa oblast, on the night of 31 January, russian forces attacked Odesa oblast by drones. 5 private houses, outbuildings and a gas pipeline were damaged. A 77-year-old woman and a 9-year-old girl experienced acute stress reactions.

In the evening of 31 January, russian troops attacked the historic centre of Odesa by ballistic missiles, possibly Iskander-M. 7 people were injured and hospitalised in moderate condition. The following monuments in Odesa were damaged as a result of the attack: the Bristol hotel, Philharmonic Hall, Vuchini House, the Museum of Western and Eastern Art, the Literary Museum Branch (Sikhar House), the Union of Architects of Ukraine buildings and the Porto Franco Bank. The Mayor of Odesa noted that approximately 15 cultural heritage sites were damaged.

Kherson oblast

Referring to the Prosecutor’s Office, in Antonivka, near Kherson, a man was killed due to a russian attack. russian troops dropped explosives while the man was outside.

In the morning, russian forces attacked Antonivka, by a drone. A 57-year-old man was injured. He was hospitalised with blast injuries and multiple shrapnel wounds to his legs.

The russian forces also attacked a 59-year-old man in Velentenske, Kherson oblast, by a drone in the morning. He is currently in the hospital with blast injuries and shrapnel wounds to his legs.

In the evening of 31 January, russian forces dropped explosives on a 62-year-old man in Beryslav. He sustained a blast injury and shrapnel wounds to his leg. He is currently under medical supervision.

Roman Mrochko, Head of Kherson City Military Administration, stated that in Dniprovskyi district of Kherson, russian forces attacked a father and son with a drone as they were returning home from work. Both were employed at a municipal company. The 22-year-old son was killed and the 44-year-old father injured and hospitalised.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

Students from the village of Zalissia, Soshychne community, raised UAH 100,000 to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine. They donated UAH 40,000 to their fellow villager, a military serviceman, and gave another UAH 60,000 to community volunteers.

Zakarpattia oblast

Uzhhorod City Council held a meeting with Inga Stanite-Tolochkiene, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Lithuania to Ukraine. Issues of energy independence were discussed.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

At the request of the command of the 102nd Territorial Defense Brigade, the oblast sent 26 drones, 10 tablets, and 2 multi-channel high-speed charging units worth almost UAH 700,000. Everything was purchased with funds from the regional budget as part of programs to support the region’s military formations.

Lviv oblast

A memorial plaque in memory of fallen soldier Yurii Tsiona was unveiled in the village of Varazh, Sokal community, on the facade of the municipal school where the defender studied. Yurii Tsiona wass killed on 28 January 2024 near the settlement of Novoiehorivka, Luhansk oblast.

Rivne oblast

Compared to December, there were fewer alarms (19) in January. The longest warning signal was sounded on January 18 (2.5 hours). The “silence mode” lasted 4 days (from 3 to 8 January). During the full-scale war in Rivne oblast, the air raid alarm sounded 822 times.

The RMA reported that in 2024, the region received 13 evacuation trains, 910 people, from Donetsk oblast.

Ternopil oblast

Ternopil City Council reported that 3,275 community soldiers received financial assistance to purchase equipment.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

At night, during an air alert signal, the Air Defense Forces destroyed 8 enemy Shahed UAVs. The attack damaged the roof of a garage and a mobile crane. A utility room of a private household also caught fire, which was extinguished. There were no casualties.

Khmelnytskyi community donated 5 Volkswagen T5 vehicles to the Defense Forces. All of them were purchased at extrabudgetary costs. 3 vehicles were purchased through cooperation with the partner city of Prague-6.

Chernivtsi oblast

The RMA in cooperation with the Tree of Life – Ukraine CF, repaired the simplest shelter of Chernivtsi Special School №4. The institution educates and educates 136 children with special educational needs, including 21 children with disabilities. During an air raid, they and the institution’s employees will be able to stay in a shelter with a total area of ​​340 sqm.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Ukraine will receive €300m from the European Investment Bank to support the country’s energy sector. In particular, €200m from the EIB will be directed to ensuring the operation of Kaniv, Kremenchuk and Dniprovsk hydroelectric power plants. Another €100m will go to modernizing district heating and strengthening energy efficiency in Ukrainian communities.

Finland will provide Ukraine with a new support package of almost €200m. No details on the exact content, method and timing are being disclosed in order to ensure the safe delivery of assistance and for operational reasons. In total, Finland has already provided Ukraine with €2.5bn in defense equipment.

The Netherlands will train 26 Ukrainians to be F-16 crew chiefs. The training will last until the end of April. These specialists are responsible for the fighter before takeoff and after returning to base.

Doomsday Clock moved forward: 89 seconds left until midnight. The decision to move the Doomsday Clock was made in light of a number of factors: the climate crisis, nuclear weapons, artificial intelligence, infectious diseases, and wars in Ukraine and the Middle East.
