War in Ukraine today: latest news, 05 October, 2024 (photo)

It has been the 955th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 4 pm:   

Russian invaders continue to storm the positions of Ukrainian defenders. In turn, the Ukrainian Defence Forces are disrupting the enemy’s insidious plans, inflicting significant losses in manpower and equipment.

In total, there were 67 combat engagements since the beginning of the day.

The border settlements of Sumy oblast continue to suffer from cynical shelling from the territory of the russian federation. Pokrovka and Katerynivka were under enemy artillery attack. The invaders launched airstrikes near Volfyne, Obody, Pavlivka, and Velyka Pysarivka, dropping 10 bombs. Also, the enemy has already dropped 24 unmanned aerial vehicles on Kursk region of the russian federation.   

Towards Kupiansk, the enemy conducted five assault operations near Novoosynove and Lozova. Three of the engagements ended and two are ongoing.

Towards Lyman, the invading army attacked four times near Novosadove, Makiivka and Torske. Ukrainian defenders repelled two attacks, two more are ongoing.

Towards Siversk, the enemy unsuccessfully attacked once near Terny.

Towards Kramatorsk, the invaders made five assault attacks.  Ukrainian defence forces stopped two russian attacks near Stupochky and Chasiv Yar, and three more attacks are ongoing. The enemy also launched airstrikes on Kramatorsk.

Towards Toretsk, the enemy attacked six times near Dachne and Toretsk. Two battles ended without success for the occupiers, four more are ongoing. The areas around Dyliivka and Oleksandro-Kalynove are suffering from enemy airstrikes.

Towards Pokrovsk is the hottest today. The invaders, with the support of aviation, have made 15 attempts to push our defenders from their positions near Novotoretske, Selydove, Krutyi Yar and Promin. The defence forces are holding back the enemy’s onslaught and repelled 12 attacks, three firefights are still ongoing. The enemy’s losses are being clarified.

Towards Kurakhove, the enemy attacked 14 times near Tsukuryne, Hostre, Heorhiivka, Katerynivka, Kostiantynivka and Antonivka. Ten battles were completed, four are ongoing.

Towards Vremivka, the occupiers attacked our troops’ positions near Bohoiavlenka three times. All enemy assaults were repelled. At the same time, the enemy, supporting the offensive, actively used aviation, dropping six bombs.

Towards Orikhiv, the invaders made one unsuccessful attempt to attack the positions of our defenders.

Towards Kherson, russian troops did not conduct any offensive actions, however, they did launch an airstrike near Lvove.

The situation did not change significantly in other frontline areas.


Kherson Regional State Administration reported that three ambulance workers and another woman were injured in a russian drone attack in Kherson oblast. The ambulance crew arrived to provide assistance and came under enemy attack.

Colonel Yurii Ihnat, Acting Head of the Communications Department of the Ukrainian Air Force Command, informed taht in addition to the Shahed drones, russia uses drones of an unspecified type. These drones often fall under the influence of Ukrainian electronic warfare equipment and crash to the ground without causing any damage.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

Oleh Syniehubov, Head of the RMA, reported that Minister of Defence of the Netherlands Ruben Brekelmans and Chief of Defence Onno Eichelsheim visited Kharkiv oblast. This visit symbolises the strong support of the Netherlands in Ukraine’s fight against russian aggression.

It was in Kharkiv that the Security Cooperation Agreement was signed in March this year, which provides for ten years of support to Ukraine.

Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office said, citing the head of the department, Oleksandr Filchakov, that the captured occupiers told about executed four Ukrainian soldiers at an aggregate plant in Vovchansk in the summer of 2024.

More than 720 hectares of Kharkiv oblast have been cleared by SES sappers since the start of the full-scale war using mechanised demining machines.

Artem Astakhov, Head of the State Emergency Service in Kharkiv oblast, informed that as of the end of September, there were 15 mechanised demining machines in operation in Kharkiv oblast.

An 87-year-old man was hospitalised with a shrapnel wound as a result of an air strike on Nyzhche Solone in Izium region. According to the RMA, the two UAVs hit the area at around 3:40pm. It caused three private houses to catch fire and sustain damage.

Yesterday at 5:05pm, Shevchenkivskyi district, was shelled. As a result of the shelling, forest litter on the area of 50 sq m burned.

At 5pm, Ruska Lozova village of Derhachi community, Kharkiv region,  was shelled. A UAV hit a field near Kharkiv-Belhorod highway.

At 4:35pm, Kupiansk was shelled. A car was damaged as a result of an FPV drone hit. A 37-year-old man was injured.

At 10:25am, Pershotravneve village of Borova community, Izium region, was shelled. As a result of the shelling a private house was burning and a 55-year-old man was killed.

At 9:50am, Cherneshchyna village of Izium region was shelled. A private house and a summer kitchen were damaged as a result of the shelling by the UAV.

At 9:40am, Iziumske village of Borova community, Izium region, was shelled. The school building was burning and a 35-year-old man was killed.

Towards Kharkiv, the enemy continued offensive and assault actions. There were four combat engagements near Starytsia, Vovchansk and Tykhe.

Towards Kupiansk, the number of attacks increased to 22. Ukrainian defence forces repelled enemy assaults near Synkivka, Novoselivka, Pishchane, Stelmakhivka and Lozova.

Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute said that a memorial plaque was unveiled in Kharkiv on a street named after the fallen 19-year-old Kraken soldier Vsevolod Tatkov.

Donetsk oblast

The number of attacks towards Pokrovsk and Lyman has become equal. The General Staff reported that the Armed Forces of Ukraine repelled 84 attacks in the east. Towards Lyman, the russian army attacked 15 times near Nevske, Hrekivka, Makiivka, Novosadove and Torske. Towards Pokrovsk, Ukrainian troops repelled 15 attacks near Mykolaivka, Selydove and Lysivka, where russian troops, supported by aviation, tried to force Ukrainian units out of their positions. Towards Kurakhove, Ukrainian defence forces repelled 28 attacks near Tsukuryne, Hostre, Heorhiivka, Antonivka, Kostiantynivka and towards Bohoiavlenka.

Serhii Horbunov, Head of Kostiantynivka CMA,reported on Suspilne Donbas that defence forces shot down a russian aircraft in Donetsk oblast on the afternoon of 5 October. The wreckage partially landed around the town of Kostiantynivka. Debris also fell into the private sector, damaging several private houses. There were no casualties or injuries as a result of the incident.

After withdrawing from Vuhledar, the 72nd Brigade continues to hold the line in the same area, near the occupied town. According to one of the servicemen, some battalions that suffered significant losses during the battle for Vuhledar will be in Donetsk oblast on a “reserve”, 10-15km from the front line.

The shelling of Pokrovsk on the night of 3-4 October left four people injured and damaged apartment buildings and private houses. Also russian troops dropped six aerial bombs on the town.

Oleksandr Starik, Acting Director of Dnipro National Historical Museum named after Yavornytskyi, reported that stone monuments were evacuated from the frontline Donetsk oblast to Dnipro: the lower part of a 12th-century Polovtsian statue and a 19th- and early 20th-century cannon.

Oleksandr Honcharenko, Head of the CMA, informed that the russian army struck Kramatorsk after 10 am on 5 October. According to preliminary information, there were no casualties or injuries. The type of weapon is being established. In the morning, enemy forces shelled the industrial zone and civilian infrastructure of Kramatorsk.

A social facility and one private house were damaged.

The operational situation in the oblast as of the morning of 5 October is as follows:

Pokrovsk region. A person was injured in Illinka of Marinka community. In Kurakhove, two administrative buildings and several multi-storey buildings were damaged, and a private house was damaged in Voznesenka. A private house was damaged in Pokrovsk, another one in Novoandriivka.

Kramatorsk region. In Lyman, a private house, an apartment building, an administrative building, a shop and 3 infrastructure facilities were damaged; in Zakitne, 2 houses and an administrative building were destroyed; in Zarichne, 2 houses were destroyed, and in Torske, 1 house was destroyed. In Mykolaivka community, 4 summer houses and an infrastructure facility were damaged. In Zoria of Illinivka community, 4 objects were damaged. A non-residential building was damaged in Kostiantynivka.

Bakhmut region. In Siversk, 2 houses were damaged. In Chasiv Yar community, 1 person was killed, 16 private houses and 2 apartment buildings were damaged.

In total, russians fired 17 times at settlements in Donetsk oblast.

Vadym Filashkin, Head of Donetsk Regional Military Administration, said that yesterday russians killed 1 civilian in Chasiv Yar. Another 1 person was wounded in the oblast.

Luhansk oblast

Russians conducted assault operations near Stelmakhivka, Hrekivka, Makiivka and Balka Zhuravka yesterday. Our servicemen are bravely repelling the enemy’s attack. The invaders shelled Zhuravka and the area around it 27 times with cannon and rocket artillery, and sent 59 drones towards the settlement.

Artem Lysohor, Head of Luhansk Regional Military Administration, reported that in Starobilsk, the russians continue the so-called ‘nationalisation’ of real estate. For instance, residents of Siverskodonetsk, Lysychansk, Rubizhne and Popasna have been evicted from their homes repeatedly, as the occupiers themselves destroyed their homes. The russian military and representatives of the so-called “lpr” security forces are moving into the empty apartments and houses.

According to the RMA, privilege, located near Lysychansk, has been without communications for more than two years. There is no question of any restoration. The settlement has been forgotten by the russians.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

Kyiv oblast will engage a Swiss company in humanitarian demining. The RMA and the CEO of Global Clearance Solutions Ukraine, Dmytro Salimonov, signed a memorandum. According to Ruslan Kravchenko, Head of the RMA, oblast is currently cooperating with 7 mine action operators who have the relevant certificates.

Mayor Anatolii Fedoruk informed that the Czech capital presented six passenger buses to Bucha community. According to him, the vehicles have already arrived at the base of the “Buchatransservice” utility company and will soon undergo all registration procedures. These buses will be used to launch a new route Bucha – Myrotske. This is the second time Prague has donated transport to the community.

Kyiv City State Administration counted that Kyiv residents have used the mental health map almost 4,000 times in two weeks. Currently, the map contains information about more than 300 service providers: psychologists, support centres, and social services.

The city council reported that Larysa Kurylas, an American architect of Ukrainian descent, visited Bucha. She came to Bucha as part of an architectural competition to create a memorial complex. Larysa Kurylas is the author of the Holodomor Memorial in Washington, DC.

Yevhen Omelchuk, a war veteran from Kyiv oblast, joined the Ukrainian national team to participate in the Strong Spirit’s Games international competition among veterans, which will take place on 11-13 October in Madrid. After being injured and undergoing rehabilitation, Yevhen Omelchuk took part in the United States Air Force and Marine Corps Trials, where he won team gold in sitting volleyball and silver in archery. In October, Yevhen became an ambassador of the Active Parks – Unstoppable adaptive clubs.

Zhytomyr oblast

The project “Restoring Hope – Rehabilitation and Psychological Support in Zhytomyr” was launched at Lyceum №16, which aims to improve psychological support in the city’s school communities. The three-day training was conducted by Polish trainers. Representatives of 10 lyceums of the community took part in the project.

A new recreation area has been created in Malyn to honour the memory of soldier Artur Holub, who died on 12 September 2021. His family, in agreement with the city council, set up a recreation area on Stepan Bandera Street, near their home.

In Zhytomyr oblast, two families of IDPs from the Kherson oblast collected 200 books for the library at their weddings. Instead of flowers, the newlyweds asked their guests to give them books. The family’s goal was to create a place in the community where people could have a cultural break, have fun and spend time in a meaningful way. Today, the local library has resumed its work, has more than 300 copies of various genres of literature, and the library’s collection is constantly updated by the villagers.

Sumy oblast

On the morning of 5 October, the russian military struck Velyka Pysarivka community in Sumy oblast with a guided aerial bomb. According to Liudmyla Biriukova, Head of Velyka Pysarivka community, the attack destroyed a two-story apartment building and caused damage to the surrounding private sector. While there were no reported injuries among residents, several people were left in a state of shock due to the attack.

During night and morning, russians carried out 18 shelling attacks on border areas and settlements in Sumy oblast, resulting in 21 explosions. The enemy attacked Khotin, Bilopillia, Richky, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Okhtyrka, Hlukhiv, Esman, Svesa communities.

Chernihiv oblast police reported that on 4 October, police from Krasnopillia evacuated two families with children from Uhroidiv, relocating them to Romny region in Sumy oblast. The families, along with their pets, were safely transported. The evacuees were provided with private homes in Romny region, which had been prepared in advance for their arrival.

The Ministry of Energy reported that in Sumy oblast, 6,200 subscribers in 93 settlements remain without electricity. Power was restored for 3,900 subscribers in 10 settlements over the past day.

Chernihiv oblast

During the day, on 4 October, russian forces attacked two border communities in Chernihiv oblast. The fire was carried out using FPV-drones, UAVs and barrel artillery. 

Novhorod-Siverskyi community:

  • one explosion (hit, likely an explosive device dropped from UAVs) near Hremiach village;
  • four explosions (hits, likely by barrel artillery) on Kovpynka village;
  • one explosion (hit, likely the arrival of an “Lancet” type UAV) on the outskirts of Dibrova village.

Semenivka community:

  • one explosion (hit, likely an explosive device dropped from UAVs) on the outskirts of Halahanivka village;
  • one explosion (hit, likely by a FPV-drone) on the outskirts of Archypivka village

No casualties or injuries among the local population were reported as a result of the shelling.

In the border town of Snovsk, Chernihiv oblast, on 5 October, residents said farewell to six-year-old Milana, who tragically died during a russian attack on Hirske on 3 October. During the same strike, two men also lost their lives. They had arrived in the village in a truck carrying liquefied gas to refill tanks for the local residents. Four more people were injured in the attack, including an 11-year-old girl and a 4-year-old boy. The explosion caused nearby residential buildings to catch fire. This event marks another sombre moment of loss due to ongoing russian military actions in the region.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Council, reported that last night, on 4 October, the enemy continued to shell Nikopol region with artillery and kamikaze drones. The invaders were targeting the region centre and Myrove community.

More than two dozen attacks – the enemy was constantly shelling Nikopol region throughout the day. The occupiers fired with artillery and kamikaze drones at the region centre, Marhanets, Pokrovsk, Myrove and Chervonohryhorivka communities. Three private houses, an outbuilding and a greenhouse were damaged.

Vinnytsia oblast

​​A peaceful rally was held on Independence Square in Vinnytsia in support of the missing defenders of the 14th Brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine “Chervona Kalyna”. The participants held flags with the brigade’s symbols, portraits of their relatives and posters with slogans.

Poltava oblast

On 5 October, a memorial service for the fallen defenders of Ukraine, soldiers Roman Haulika and Ihor Vodolaha, was held in Poltava near the Holy Dormition Cathedral of the OCU.

Cherkasy oblast

In Cherkasy, a funeral service was held for the fallen defender Oleksandr Chykyris.  The soldier was killed in action near Kursk oblast of russia. He was 36 years old.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Ivan Fedorov, Head of the RMA, reported that 2 people were killed as a result of russian shelling in Mala Tokmachka. The bodies of the victims could not be recovered for several hours due to the heavy artillery attack on the village.

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, in the morning of 5 October, the Defence Forces repelled 4 russian attacks near Robotyne, Mali Shcherbaky and Kamianske on Orikhiv axis.

Mykolaiv oblast

According to the RMA, on 4 October, around 10:27pm, the russian military attacked an infrastructure facility in Mykolaiv, previously by Kh-59/Kh-69 cruise missiles

In one of Mykolaiv’s hospitals, free endoprosthetic surgeries are being performed for people who have lost limbs. The prosthetics are made directly at the facility.

In Lymany village volunteers are restoring houses damaged by russian shelling.

Odesa oblast

According to Ukrainian Air Force, during the night of 5 October, air defence forces shot down 3 drones in Odesa oblast.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi personally awarded the Order of Courage III class to Serhiy Stepanenko, a resident of Odesa.

Kherson oblast

According to Kherson RMA, the russian military attacked an emergency medical vehicle in Veletenske by a drone. 4 workers were injured.

The russian forces used a drone to attack a 59-year-old man in the suburbs of Kherson.

The russian troops also attacked people in Dniprovskyi district of Kherson by a drone. 4 people were injured and hospitalised.

Also, Stanislav in Kherson oblast was under enemy attack, a 71-year-old woman sustained a concussion, explosive trauma and a head injury.

According to the State Emergency Service, during the night of 5 October, russian occupiers attacked Antonivka near Kherson, causing 2 fires. Rescue workers found 1 person killed under the rubble of a house.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

The RMA held a meeting of the commission on the provision of one-time cash assistance to military personnel, veterans and members of their families in need of treatment. Therefore, members of the commission decided to provide material assistance from the regional budget to 70 residents from Volyn oblast for the total amount of UAH 633,000.

Zakarpattia oblast

This week, the Owl’s Nest Humanitarian Aid Center provided IDPs registered in Uzhgorod with 25 packages with necessary things for children under 1 year old and 50 bags with grocery sets. During the week, volunteers gave out clothes, shoes, bed linen and dishes (2,455 items) from the PDUM Partnerschaft Deutschland-Ukraine/Moldova e. V., Luftfahrt ohne Grenzen / Wings of Help eV and other benefactors.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Representatives of Ivano-Frankivsk City Council handed over to the military during a volunteer trip to Kharkiv oblast 70 FPV drones thanks to budget funds.

The oblast sent 22 Motorola R7 intercoms, all-terrain vehicle; remote-controlled combat module Wolly; 5 repeaters with modules and quadcopters to the 50th Regiment named after Vysochan worth over UAH 2.6m.

Lviv oblast

In Lviv, the Peculiarities of Communication With Veterans course was held for over 30 specialists of Lviv RMA and district military administrations of Lviv oblast. The course also included practical exercises and discussions, which allowed the participants not only to listen, but also to actively interact, share experiences and find joint solutions.

The State of Weightlessness exhibition of graphics by Krzysztof Tomalski was opened in the Sheptytskyi Museum. The exhibition takes place within the framework of the Index of Mariusz Kazan ­– 2024 competition, highlights existential issues and Ukraine’s support in the russian-Ukrainian war, which is one of the main topics of the competition.

According to the Decree of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Bohdan Oryshchyna from Velikie Mosty, in Chervonohrad region (now Sheptytskyi) was awarded with the For the Defense of Ukraine award. The soldier was mobilised to the ranks of the Armed Forces on 18 April, 2022. Now the defender is carrying out combat missions in Kharkiv oblast.

The public relations department of the Communications Department of the Operational Command West reported that the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine awarded 2 defenders from the 68th Oleksa Dovbush Separate Hunting Brigade of Lviv oblast with the Cross of Valor awards.

Almost UAH 68,000 were raised in Yavoriv region for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Students, their parents and school teachers held a charity fair.

Rivne oblast

Zarichnensk and Rokytniv communities received 2 fire engines from the Insamlingsstiftelsen Bläljus i Samverkan Swedish organisation. This is already the 12th humanitarian mission from partners from Sweden.

Ternopil oblast

In Ternopil, the 1st stage of the Support the Armed Forces – Plant a Name Tree campaign was completed, during which over 100 applications for planting trees were submitted. The townspeople actively supported the initiative aimed at greening the city and helping Ukrainian defenders. All funds raised will be used to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine, specifically for the purchase of unmanned aerial vehicles for the military on the front lines.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Khmelnytskyi City Council presented the Honorary Citizen of Khmelnytskyi Community award to families of fallen Heroes (posthumously). The youngest soldier, Pavlo Fostyk, whose mother he presented the award to, was born in 2005.

Chernivtsi oblast

The oblast sent a repeater for remote control of UAVs and 5 FPV-drones from the Bukovyna manufacturer to the 82nd Separate Amphibious Assault Bukovynia brigade. 

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

On 12 October, a Ramstein meeting will be held. This will be the 25th meeting, but the 1st at the leader level.

The Ukrainian Legion has started recruiting volunteer citizens of Ukraine in Lublin, Poland. The 1st recruiting centre was opened on the basis of the Consulate of Ukraine in Lublin and operates every day from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm without breaks. A military medical commission (MMC) operates on site. The training of volunteers takes place at the training ground provided by the Polish side.

The AeroVironment American company plans to manufacture Switchblade 600 ammunition in Ukraine. The relevant contract was concluded at the International Forum of Defense Industries in Kyiv. For security reasons, the Ukrainian company-signatory is not named.

The State Security Department of Lithuania stated that in the country a campaign against the recruitment of citizens by the special services of the russian federation begins. They added that similar recruitment operations in Lithuania are also organised by belarusian and Chinese special services.
