War in Ukraine today: latest news, 10 August, 2024 (photo)

It has been the 899th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

On 10 August, russian forces continued their offensive actions. 

There were 72 combat engagements on the front line. 

Over a third of these occurred towards Pokrovsk. The invaders are actively using aviation, particularly for strikes on the border areas of Sumy oblast from the russian territory.

Sumy and Chernihiv oblasts continued to suffer from artillery shelling from the territory of russia. Fourteen areas of various settlements came under enemy fire, including Popivka, Ulanove, Zarutske, Velyka Pysarivka, Karpovychi, and Bleshnia.

Towards Kharkiv, Ukrainian soldiers repelled an enemy attack near Vovchansk, where two more clashes are ongoing.

Towards Kupiansk, the enemy made four unsuccessful attempts to storm the positions of Ukrainian units near Stelmakhivka and Berestove.

Towards Lyman, the invading army conducted nine attacks on Ukrainian positions near Nevske and Makiivka. Six enemy attacks failed, while three, near Nevske, are still ongoing.

Towards Siversk, the enemy tried to find weaknesses in Ukrainian defenses. They conducted five attacks near Bilohorivka, Vyimka, and Spirne, yet failed. Enemy losses are being clarified.

Towards Kramatorsk, the invaders launched eight assaults near Chasiv Yar and Bila Hora, three of which are still ongoing. The enemy is suffering losses and concentrating efforts in the vicinity of Chasiv Yar.

Towards Toretsk, the number of enemy attacks increased to seven. Two of them were stopped by Ukrainian soldiers, while fighting is still ongoing near Niu-York and Toretsk. This city witnessed four air bombardments. Ukrainian positions in the vicinity of Druzhba were targeted by 12 unguided aerial rockets.

Towards Pokrovsk, there were the largest number of clashes. The invaders made 25 attempts to push Ukrainian defenders out of their positions in the vicinities of eight different settlements. The most clashes took place near Hrodivka and Zhelanne, with eight and seven clashes, respectively. The vicinity of Oleksandropil was hit by unguided aerial rockets and guided aerial bombs.

Towards Kurakhove, eight enemy attacks on Karlivka, Krasnohorivka, Heorhiivka, and Kostyantynivka were repelled.

Towards Vremivka, an enemy clash near Vodiane failed. Two guided bombs were used to strike Neskuchne and unguided aerial rockets – twice near Novodonetske.

Towards Kherson, two russian attacks failed.

No significant changes were reported on other fronts.


The Ministry of Reintegration of Temporarily Occupied Territories reported that in three settlements in Donetsk oblast, a mandatory evacuation of children has been announced. The evacuation of children along with their parents or other legal guardians will last for 60 days, with one reception center set up for this purpose.

Denys Shmyhal, Prime Minister of Ukraine, announced that the Ukrainian government has allocated 2.7 billion hryvnias for the reconstruction of settlements in four regions. The funds will be spent on restoration of Chernihiv, Kherson, Kharkiv, and Sumy oblasts.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

According to Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office, an 87-year-old man died from a russian strike on Kupiansk. The village of Lisna Stinka was struck at about 3:40pm, previously, from the RSZV.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces informs that four russian assaults were repelled by the Defense Forces towards Kupiansk. 

Two battles are ongoing towards Kharkiv, one attack of the russians was repelled.

At 3:30pm, russians attacked Perotrovyneve village, Izium region. As a result of the shelling  a residential building was destroyed. An 80-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man were killed on the spot. A 58-year-old man died in hospital. 

At 03:15pm, russians attacked Ivashki, Bohodukhiv region. As a result of shelling from the RSZV Uragan, eight private residential buildings and the facade of the hospital were damaged.  A 35-year-old man suffered.

At 4:48pm therussians attacked Cherkasska Lozova village, Kharkiv region. As a result of the shelling, grass was burning, the area of fire is 1.5 hectares. 

At 4:02pm, russians attacked Kupiansk. As a result of the FPV-drone attacks, the car was damaged. 

The day before at 4:01pm, russians attacked Kharkiv, Kyivskyi district of the city. As a result of the shelling of the FAB-500, an educational institution was on fire. The 67-year-old man was injured. 

At 3:20pm, russians attacked Izyumske village, Izium region. As a result of the shelling from the RSZV,  a private house was damaged. 

Towards Kharkiv, there were four battles. The defense forces repelled the enemy assault near Vovchansk. 

Towards Kupiansk, there were two fighting clashes, in particular, near Kolisnikovka and Tabaivka.

Donetsk oblast

During the past day, the occupiers shelled the front region 2,849 times. The attack hit 11 settlements. 61 civilian objects were damaged. 

Against Kostiantynivka, the russians used a Kh-38 missile, a  Smerch RSZV and artillery. As a result of the shelling, 14 civilians were killed, 40 others injured. 

On August 10, the on sorting the rubble of the shopping center was finished. On the site, rescuers dismantled 76 tons of construction structures. Of the 8 unidentified bodies, the police forensics identified 5: three women and two children – girls born in 2012 and 2014. It remains to identify 3 people.

To thoroughly document the war crime of russia,  an interdepartmental investigative group, which includes employees of the National Police and Security Service of Ukraine, was created.

In Selidove, as a result of the drone strike, a civilian was injured, a civilian car was damaged.

As a result of the artillery shelling, a person was injured in Seversk. 

Rusin Yar was hit by the RSZV Smerch, destroying 6 private houses, a house of culture, and an electric grid. In Hornik, the russian military hit with artillery and damaged the enterprise. 

After midnight, the occupiers hit  Selidove with the FPV drone and wounded a civilian. In addition, it became known about the death of a person in Toretsk as a result of enemy shelling on August 8.

Luhansk oblast

Yesterday, russians tried 15 times to develop offensive actions towards Nevske, Makiivka and in Serebrianka forest. According to the RMA, the occupiers unsuccessfully tried to advance in Belohorivka. Near Nevsky and Makiivka, they used 83 UAVs, struck with barrel artillery, on Makiivka – also with a rocket. 

On television, the occupiers release false stories about the supposedly large volume of repairs, which they arrange in the so-called lpr. For example, they are excited about the repair of roads, but there is no asphalt on the streets of Lysychansk.

The “lpr” team will be a participant in the 11th open championship of russia in ploughing. Competition on soil cultivation will start in Saratov oblast next week after the closing of the Olympic Games in Paris. The main prize is a tractor. To become its owner, 54 mechanics from 36 oblasts of the russian federation have already shown the desire to participate.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

The State Emergency Service of Kyiv oblast reported that in the village of Kalyta, Brovary region, a man sustained serious life-threatening injuries as a result of a munition detonation, a girl born in 2011 was injured and hospitalised at Brovary Central District Hospital.

Ruslan Kravchenko, Head of the oblast, announced that the project “Educational Security Service” will start in the new school year in Kyiv oblast. 94 oblast schools have been identified to participate in it. 18 inspectors have already been trained and sent to secondary schools.

The third recruitment centre of the Ukrainian army has started working in Kyiv oblast. According to the Ministry of Defence, it was opened in Bucha, after the previous ones in Bila Tserkva and Brovary. From now on, community members can contact a civilian recruiter who has undergone special training and receive comprehensive information about available units and vacancies in the Defence Forces.

An action in support of missing marines was held in the centre of Kyiv. Relatives and friends of Ukrainian soldiers who went missing near Krynky, Kherson oblast, gathered on Maidan Nezalezhnosti. 

Zhytomyr oblast

According to the RMA, a network of rehabilitation centres is being set up in Zhytomyr Oblast and modern treatment methods are being introduced. There are already 18 hospitals in the oblast working in this area. Recently, rehabilitation departments have been repaired or reconstructed in 6 of them. Since the start of hostilities in Ukraine, the region’s healthcare facilities have treated more than 65,000 servicemen.

To ensure effective social integration of veterans, a network of veterans’ hubs has been created in the oblast, including 27 veterans’ spaces in the communities of the region. There is also a regional centre for solving social and psychological problems of war veterans and their families.

In total, the oblast has a regional and 113 local programmes for war veterans, their families and the families of the deceased. Thanks to these programmes, in the first half of 2024, UAH 60m was provided in targeted financial assistance to wounded servicemen and women and to the families of fallen and missing defenders.

Zhytomyr Mayor Serhii Sukhomlyn announced that on 9 August, six families of fallen Ukrainian defenders were presented with state awards – one Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky, III class, and five Orders for Courage, III class.

In Novohuivynske, young people from ten regions of Ukraine created a youth space in the village community centre. This is the second building in Zhytomyr oblast to be restored as part of the Vidnova:UA project. Twenty-eight participants aged 18 to 35 joined the restoration of the community centre. 

Another reminder event in support of Ukrainian prisoners of war and missing persons was held in the centre of Zhytomyr. The families of military personnel who are in captivity or have disappeared due to hostilities, as well as concerned Zhytomyr residents participated in the event.

Sumy oblast

At night and in the morning, russians fired 17 times at the border areas and settlements of Sumy oblast. There were 44 explosions. Sumy, Khotin, Yunakivka, Miropillia, Bilopillia, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Hlukhiv, Esman communities were shelled.

On 9 August, russians fired 20 times at border areas and settlements of Sumy oblast. There were 65 explosions. Khotin, Yunakivka, Bilopillia, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Hlukhiv, Esman, Seredyna-Buda, Znob-Novhorodske communities were shelled.

Khotyn, Yunakivka, Bilopillia, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Hlukhiv, Esman, Seredyna-Buda, Znob-Novhorodske communities were shelled.

Yunakivka community: UMPB D-30SN bombs launched from an aircraft (7 explosions), and KAB air strikes (5 explosions).

Khotin community: an UMPB D-30SN bomb launched from an aircraft (1 explosion), a KAB air strike (3 explosions), and an FPV drone strike (1 explosion).

Seredyna-Buda community: russians dropped 32 mines on the community’s territory.

Esman community: an FPV drone attack (1 explosion), and mortar shelling (4 explosions).

Velyka Pysarivka community: the enemy fired mortars (2 explosions).

Bilopillia community: russians dropped an explosive device from a UAV (1 explosion).

Znob-Novhorodske community: there was a mortar attack (1 explosion).

Hlukhiv community: there were air strikes by UAVs (5 explosions).

Krasnopillia community: air strikes (2 explosions).

Volodymyr Artiukh, Head of Sumy Regional Military Administration, announced that evacuated residents of the border communities of Sumy oblast will be served at two registration points.

Over 18,000 people, including 2,415 children, have been evacuated from Sumy oblast border area over the past year.

Sumy Regional State Administration reported that Sumy oblast is working on the implementation of the decentralised generation plan. To fulfil the tasks of the Government and the regional Plan on introducing distributed generation and providing backup energy sources in Sumy oblast, measures are envisaged to develop distributed generation, including provision of generators in oblast, installation of cogeneration units and modular boiler houses, solar power plants and energy storage systems in public and administrative buildings.

Volodymyr Artiukh, Head of Sumy Regional Military Administration, informed that a shelter for 500 people is being built on the territory of a school in Sumy. More than UAH 56m of educational subvention was allocated from the state budget to construct the shelter, and another UAH 42m was allocated by Sumy community. 

Chernihiv oblast

During the day, russian troops carried out strikes with 120 mm mortars, FPV drones and barrel artillery on the border of Chernihiv oblast. There were 42 explosions.

Novhorod-Siverskyi community: 20 explosions (probably from 120 mm mortars, barrel artillery and UAV) in the direction of Hai and Kovpynka.

Semenivka community: 22 explosions (probably from 120 mm mortars, barrel artillery and UAV) in the vicinity of Bleshnia, Karpovychi, Orlikivka, Prohres and Hotiivka. Information about dead or injured persons, as a result of shelling among the local population, is not recorded.

Viacheslav Chaus, Head of Chernihiv RMA, says that on August 9, 8 employees of Chernihiv Regional Children’s Hospital received commemorative medals from Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovsk RMA, said that in the evening, on 9 August, the occupiers attacked Nikopol four times. A residential building was hit by a kamikaze drone.  A young mother with a small child was injured. The one-and-a-half-year-old boy is hospitalised in moderate condition. An apartment building was damaged. At night and in the morning, the russian army was shooting at the regional centre, Myrove and Chervonohryhorivka communities. The shelling caused a fire.

On 10 August, the russian military fired at Nikopol region about two dozen times. The enemy fired at the regional centre, Myrove, Pokrovka and Marhanets communities with artillery and kamikaze drones. An outpatient clinic, a utility and agricultural enterprise, an apartment building, 6 private houses, an outbuilding, an administrative building, a fire truck and a car were damaged.

The Hospitallers volunteer medical battalion held a training session in Dnipropetrovsk oblast. Both civilians and soldiers were trained in first aid. 

Vinnytsia oblast

​​According to Vinnytsia City Council, 15 children of fallen and missing defenders went to the city of Panevezys (Lithuania) for 10 days. They will enjoy excursions, trips to different cities, and art evenings.

Kirovohrad oblast

Andrii Raikovych, Head of Kirovohrad Regional Military Administration, announced that Kirovohrad oblast has handed over drones to the 57th Brigade. 

Poltava oblast

An Alley of Memory was opened in Kremenchuk in honour of the fallen defenders.  It features more than 200 portraits of fallen soldiers from Kremenchuk community. Relatives and friends of the fallen soldiers came to the opening with flowers.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

On 9 August, russian occupiers struck 9 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast 470 times. The russian forces carried out 3 airstrikes on Kamianske, Novoandriivka and Poltavka. 

324 UAVs of various modifications attacked Huliaipole, Novoandriivka, Novodanylivka, Robotyne, Mala Tokmachka, Malynivka and Poltavka. 

There were 143 artillery shelling attacks targeting Bilenke, Huliaipole, Novoandriivka, Robotyne, Mala Tokmachka, Novodanylivka, Malynivka and Poltavka. 

Despite the intensity of these attacks, no casualties among civilians were reported, although 4 reports of residential and infrastructure damage were registered.

Mykolaiv oblast

On 9 August, russian forces carried out over 10 attacks on Mykolaiv oblast. Kutsurub community came under artillery attack at 12pm, 12:39pm and 1:12pm, with damage reported to a village club and a kindergarten in Ivanivka. There were no casualties reported. 

Later, the enemy used FPV drones to attack, causing a fire in a residential building’s roof in Solonchaky, which was extinguished by firefighters without any injuries. 

In addition, shelling occurred in Ochakiv city, causing a fire in an unused farm building and dry grass. 

As reported by Vitaii. Kim, Head of Mykolaiv RMA, on 10 August, russian forces used artillery and FPV drones to attack settlements in Mykolaiv oblast.

2 men were wounded in Kutsurub community as a result of russian shelling by FPV drones. In addition, 3 women were wounded in Ochakiv as a result of enemy artillery shelling. A 56-year-old woman is in serious condition, 2 women aged 55 and 51 are in moderate condition. The wounded are being provided with the necessary medical care.

Odesa oblast

The Ukrainian Navy struck a gas platform in the Black Sea overnight, where the enemy had stationed reconnaissance equipment and up to 40 personnel. This information was later confirmed by the Navy. 

Also, according to the Ukrainian Navy, the russian federation has deployed 1 ship in the Black Sea, which is armed with up to 4 Kalibr missiles.

Kherson oblast

On 9 August, russian forces targeted 17 settlements in Kherson oblast by artillery and airstrikes. 

The affected areas included Bilozirka, Shyroka Balka, Antonivka, Sadove, Prydniprovske, Zelenivka, Zymivnyk, Zorivka, Mykilske, Novodmytrivka, Beryslav, Kachkarivka, Zmiivka, Andriivka, Tomaryne, Novoraisk and Kherson. 

The attacks damaged critical infrastructure, residential areas, including an apartment building and 23 private houses, as well as private vehicles. 6 people were injured as a result of Russian aggression. 

As reported by the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, a drone attack in Kherson injured 2 people and damaged a car. 

On 10 August, around 2pm, russian forces struck the village of Shyroka Balka in the Kherson region, injuring a 59-year-old man. 

On the same day, in Bilozirka community, a tractor hit an anti-personnel mine in a field, damaging the tractor but leaving the driver unharmed. 

Overnight, a large fire broke out near Kherson due to russian shelling, quickly spreading by strong winds and covering nearly the entire city with smoke. Firefighters are working hard to extinguish the blaze, though the situation is complicated by the likelihood that the affected areas may still be mined.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

Lutsk community sent 2 DJI Mavic 3T Enterprise (Thermal) quadcopters to the Military Unit A7038 thanks to the budget funds.

Zakarpattia oblast

5 family-type orphanages from Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv and Kherson oblasts, which were forced to move to the oblast due to the war, received modern gadgets, bicycles and household appliances from the Elena Zelenska Foundation. These families raise from 6 to 9 children. Therefore, this humanitarian support will improve their living and training conditions and provide interesting and active leisure opportunities.

The Regional Council held a meeting with Davyd Nowy, Consul General of the Czech Republic in Lviv. They discussed implementation of the construction project of the 4.5.0. Recovery Center military rehabilitation centre and opportunities for Czech business investment

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Ivano-Frankivsk City Council reported that Stepan Zholoban was awarded with the III degree For Courage order.

Lviv oblast

British farmers led by Mark Laird sent 38 more SUVs to Ukrainian defenders. This time, people from the Netherlands and the US also joined in helping.

In Sambir region, the educational building of one of the lyceums was converted to accommodate IDPs. The project was implemented with the support of local authorities and international humanitarian organisations. Over UAH 12.5m from the regional budget and over UAH 19m from donors and local authorities have been allocated for capital repairs of the facility.

Vladyslav Pokryshchuk, Senior Operator of the Special Purpose Group, received the III degree For Courage Order (posthumously). Together with his comrades, he performed combat missions in Mykolaiv, Donetsk, Luhansk and Kharkiv oblasts. He was killed on 26 December 2023 in the village of Synkivka, Kharkiv oblast.

Rivne oblast

Rivne oblast continues to support Kochubeiv community of Kherson oblast. 32 children from this community came to the oblast for vacation. For two weeks, they will be in one of the children’s health facilities in Duben region. These are mostly children of combatants, as well as from large and single-parent families. The rehabilitation of children is one of the steps taken by the oblast to support liberated Kherson oblast, which takes place within the framework of the Side by Side Presidential initiative.

Ternopil oblast

Ternopil City Council reported that the community sent 4 laser pointers Laser Blue YX-B015 and 4 tablets in a set (tablet Tab A 1025X-treme) to the 42nd Separate Mechanised Brigade.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Khmelnytskyi community sent 10 DJI MAVIC 3T Thermal quadcopters worth over UAH 1.5m to the military. Since the beginning of 2024, the community has sent about 350 quadcopters, 4,300 FPV drones and 110 EW and PEP devices to the military.

Khmelnytskyi City Council allocated targeted funds from the state for the purchase of housing for participants of the russian-Ukrainian war with disabilities. For a total amount of UAH 121m.

Chernivtsi oblast

Travel Therapy for defenders undergoing rehabilitation in Bukovyna continues. Already the 4th group of servicemen joined the sightseeing tour of Chernivtsi oblast. Participants visited Khotyn Fortress State Historical and Architectural Reserve. Such excursions will continue until the end of summer.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

The US announced a new $125m military aid package for Ukraine, which will include air defence equipment, missile and artillery systems and ammunition for them, anti-tank weapons, Stinger missiles, auxiliary equipment, services, training and transport.

Ukraine signed a visa-free agreement with Mauritius. The agreement should facilitate trips of Mauritian investors and businessmen to Ukraine in search of new opportunities and after the war, increase the number of Ukrainian tourists in Mauritius.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland stated that the country will leave the border with russia closed.

Johan Forsell, Sweden‘s Minister for Development Cooperation, announced that the government will gradually end aid to Mali due to the severing of diplomatic relations with Ukraine. After that, Mali expelled the Swedish ambassador from the country.
