War in Ukraine today: latest news, September 20, 2023 (photo)

It has been the 574th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

During the day of September 20, there were more than 15x combat engagements. Also, the russian federation launched another air strike against Ukraine with Shahed-136/131 strike UAVs. Air defense destroyed 17x Shaheds along their route within Sumy, Poltava, Kirovohrad and Dnipropetrovsk oblasts. Unfortunately, an oil refinery in Poltava oblast was damaged by the strike, and the relevant services are working to eliminate the consequences.

In total, during the day of September 20, the russian invaders launched 72x air strikes and 35x MLRS strikes at the positions of Ukrainian troops and various settlements. Residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure have been destroyed and damaged.

The operational situation in the east and south of Ukraine remains difficult.

Volyn and Polissya axes: no significant changes. There are no signs of offensive groups being formed. Certain units of the Belarusian armed forces are performing tasks in the areas bordering Ukraine.

Sivershchyna and Slobozhanshchyna axes: the enemy maintains its military presence in the border areas, continues shelling Ukrainian settlements from the territory of russia. More than 25x settlements suffered enemy artillery and mortars fire, including Karpovychi, Arkhypivka, Leonivka, Vyl’chyky (Chernihiv oblast), Stara Huta, Seredyna-Buda, Bilovody, Taratutyne, Hrabovs’ke (Sumy oblast), Ivashky, Udy, Pletenivka, Vil’khuvatka, Bilohorivka (Kharkiv oblast).

Kup’yans’k axis: the settlements of Syn’kivka, Tabaivka, Krokhmal’ne (Kharkiv oblast) suffered enemy artillery and mortars shelling.

Lyman axis: the adversary launched air strikes in the vicinities of Nevs’ke, Bilohorivka (Luhansk oblast) and Novosadove, Tors’ke, Spirne, Vesele (Donetsk oblast). The settlements of Zarichne, Tors’ke, Serebryanka, Verkhn’okam’yans’ke, Vesele (Donetsk oblast) suffered enemy artillery and mortars fire.

Bakhmut axis: the Ukrainian Forces successfully repelled enemy attacks in the area west of Zaitseve (Donetsk oblast). The enemy tried to restore the lost position in the area northeast of Andriivka (Donetsk oblast) to no success. The occupiers launched air strikes near Klishchiivka and New York (Donetsk oblast). More than 20x settlements came under enemy artillery and mortars fire, including Vasyukivka, Orikhovo-Vasylivka, Dachne, Zalizne (Donetsk oblast).

Avdiivka axis: the adversary fired artillery and mortars at about 10x settlements, including Novokalynove, Orlivka, Sjeverne, Pervomais’ke, Nevel’s’ke (Donetsk oblast). 

Mar’inka axis: during the day of September 20, the Ukrainian defenders successfully repelled10x enemy attacks in the vicinity of Mar’inka (Donetsk oblast). The adversary launched an air strike near Krasnohorivka (Donetsk oblast). The invaders fired artillery and mortars at about 10x settlements, including Oleksandropil’, Krasnohorivka, Mar’inka, Novomykhailivka, Katerynivka (Donetsk oblast).

Shakhtars’ke axis: the adversary launched an air strike near the settlement of Vuhledar (Donetsk oblast). About 10x settlements, including Vuhledar, Novoukrainka, Prechystivka, Zolota Nyva, Blahodatne (Donetsk oblast), came under enemy artillery and mortars fire.

Zaporizhzhia axis: the occupiers launched an air strike near Robotyne (Zaporizhzhia oblast). The enemy fired artillery and mortars at more than 20x settlements, including Zaliznychne, Charivne, Novoandriivka, Lobkove, Kam’yans’ke (Zaporizhzhia oblast).

Kherson axis: the invaders launched air strikes near the settlements of Kozats’ke, Ol’hivka, Tyahynka, Tokarivka (Kherson oblast). The russian occupiers fired artillery and mortars at about 10x settlements, including Sablukivka, Respublikanets’, Mykolaivka, Dniprovs’ke, Kizomys (Kherson oblast).

At the same time, the Ukrainian Defense Forces continue to conduct the offensive operation on Melitopol’ axis and offensives (assaults) on Bakhmut axis, inflicting losses in manpower and equipment on the occupation forces, and exhausting the enemy.

During the day of September 20, the Ukrainian Air Force launched 8x air strikes on the concentrations of troops, weapons, and military equipment of the adversary.

Missile troops hit 1x concentration of troops, weapons and military equipment, 1x Strela-10 anti-aircraft missile system and 4x artillery systems of the russian invaders.


Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Illia Yevlash, Head of the press service of the Eastern Group of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, reported that over the past week, the General Staff has recorded almost no attacks towards Lyman-Kupiansk. At the same time, the occupation forces continue to regroup and create new assault units. Ukrainian intelligence sees this and the Defence Forces are building defensive constructions and installing minefields on the frontline.

Yesterday 58 invaders were eliminated. Three armoured personnel carriers, six mortars of various calibres, D-20 and D-30 howitzers, troops and ammunition vehicles and ammunition depots were burned down.

Towards Svatove-Kupiansk, SBU officers used attack drones to destroy russian anti-drone equipment Sylok-01, the Pole-21 system, which prevented radio signals, satellite navigation and prevented the Armed Forces of Ukraine from using high-precision weapons and the Murom-M radio and electronic reconnaissance system.

Kharkiv oblast

Russian troops shelled Odnorobivka village of Zolochiv community, located about 5 km from the border with russia, with artillery for an hour. A 65-year-old man was injured.  There is no electricity on three streets and gas networks are cut off. The house of a defender, who was killed in the war in 2022, garages, sheds, cars and two-storey buildings were under attack. Also russians launched 152-metre shells from a self-propelled artillery system.

Oleh Syniehubov, Head of Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, reported that yesterday russian invaders attacked settlements of Kupiansk, Bohodukhiv and Izium regions.

As a result of a guided missile strike on Kupiansk, three cars with civilians in them were destroyed. The Regional Prosecutor’s Office noted that investigators for the first time recorded the use of Grim-E1 missiles by russian troops. Eight people, including two volunteers from the Piatykhatky BAM NGO who were evacuating people, were killed. Yevhen Koliada, Head of the Humanitarian Coordination Centre, reported about the evacuation from Kivsharivka that was coordinated and the volunteers acted according to the rules. Yevhen Koliada did not name the deceased volunteers, noting that the bodies have not yet been identified.

In addition, more than 10 settlements were under artillery and mortar attacks. Specifically, Krasne Pershe, Lyman Pershyi, Synkivka, Kotliarivka, Krokhmalne, Berestove, Ambarne, Stroivka, Topoli, Odnorobivka and Ivashky were targeted.

Yesterday  pyrotechnics of the State Emergency Service examined more than 4.9 hectares of territory and defused 151 explosive ordnance.

Referring to the Regional Power Company, power engineers provided electricity to 11 villages that have been without power since 24 August as a result of shelling in Vovchansk community. Specialists restored the high-voltage line that feeds the local substation but they were unable to do it at first attempt because the crew was under the shelling.

The City Council informed that the Kharkiv: Restart invest forum, dedicated to projects for Kharkiv, was held in Kyiv yesterday.

Donetsk oblast

Special Operations Forces of Ukraine reported that towards Bakhmut, Ukrainian troops destroyed an MSTA-B cannon with a set of Krasnopol shells, the market price of which is about $40K each. 

According to Donetsk Regional Military Administration, five streets in Avdiivka were shelled towards Donetsk. Krasnohorivka, Yelyzavetivka and Katerynivka of Marinka community were targeted.

Towards Horlivka, 7 buildings were damaged in Pleshchiivka of Illinivsk community. 1 apartment building and 2 private buildings were damaged in Chasiv Yar community 

Towards Lysychansk, a building was damaged in Siversk and three streets under attack in Zvanivka. Lyman community was shelled 17 times.

Towards Volnovakha, 1 person was injured in Bahatyr of Velyka Novosilka community. Vuhledar was under an air strike and 34 artillery shelling. Bohoyliavlenka and Maksymivka were shelled. The Prosecutor’s Office reported that four people were injured in the shelling of Petropavlivka village of Volnovakha region. According to preliminary conclusions, the village was attacked with three Iskander missiles and one X-35 missile.

The police evacuated three more children from Zhelanne Druhe village of Marinka community near the front line. Ten more children remain in the village. Donetsk rescuers together with volunteers from the Proliska humanitarian mission evacuated an 83-year-old woman with limited mobility from frontline Niu-York.

Archbishop Serhii Horobtsov of Donetsk and Mariupol reported that representatives of the so-called “MGB DNR” detained a Ukrainian priest, Archpriest Andrii (Chui), in occupied Donetsk on 17 September. On the same day, Father Khrystofor (Khrimli), a clergyman of the Donetsk Diocese of the UOC, was also detained in one of the occupied settlements of Volnovakha region.

The National Resistance Centre stated that in the temporarily occupied Donetsk, russians plan to create a high military school for three and a half thousand people by the beginning of winter.

The White Angel – The End of Marinka documentary will open the DOK Leipzig Film Festival 2023. According to the official announcement of the organisers, the film, directed by Arndt Ginzel, tells the story of the evacuation and rescue operations in the small Marinka town from spring to autumn 2022.

Luhansk oblast

According to Luhansk Regional Military Administration, the occupation forces opened artillery fire on Nevske yesterday afternoon. There were 25 explosions on the territory of the village. In addition, the enemy used FAB-500 air bombs twice. An 85-year-old woman was killed after sustaining a head injury incompatible with life. Her house was destroyed. The enemy also conducted air and artillery strikes on Bilohorivka.

The residents of Sievierodonetsk, who stayed in the city, still live without mobile phone and internet connections which were cut off by the invaders. For almost six months, people gave been trying to find at least some connection on the roofs of apartment buildings but the occupation authorities became aware of their attempts to contact their relatives. Currently, the closest places to the city from which to make a call are the surrounding villages, mostly the most remote settlements of the community.

Dovzhansk has mobile phone service. The local education department has purchased military uniforms for local school students and kindergarteners.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

In Kyiv, representatives of civil community organisations discussed the importance of rehabilitation and socialisation through sport for soldiers after their injuries. The meeting was held at Ukrinform. They discussed the problems of rehabilitation of soldiers and demonstrated real examples of socialisation of veterans with amputations and their participation in various sports. 

It has become known that a football team for soldiers who have lost limbs has been created. The project started on 1 June and is now actively developing.

The Ministry for Veterans Affairs reported that training for coaching teams has begun in Kyiv. 20 researchers and teachers from leading universities will take an intensive course on Theory and Practice of Training Specialists in Supporting War Veterans and Demobilised Persons. The course is part of a pilot project of the Ministry for Veterans Affairs to introduce the institute of a veteran’s assistant in Ukraine.

Kyiv is preparing to deploy the Points of Invincibility in the autumn and winter of 2023. There are 20 points in the capital, and another 462 are on standby. 

RBK-Ukraine reported that a charity photo exhibition In the Struggle for Life opened in the city. It is dedicated to the work of medical professionals. The exhibition is located on the territory of the Dobrobut medical and diagnostic centre. The exposition includes shots showing the daily work of Dobrobut doctors, nurses and other medical staff, as well as stories of patients who have recovered. With this project, the company aims to show the behind-the-scenes work of medical professionals during the war and raise funds for the treatment of those affected by the fighting.

On September 22, Gulliver shopping and entertainment centre will host the Star Donation event organised as part of the joint initiative of DonorUA and MUZVAR Music and Victory in Our Blood!. At the event, Ukrainian pop stars and famous bloggers will donate blood to save military and civilian patients. Since the start of the full-scale war, the need for donated blood has increased by 60%.

According to Kyiv RMA, blasting operations were carried out in the Bila Tserkva district at the Shamraivka granite deposit. They are related to technological processes.

A presentation of the book Anatomy of a Warrior: Spirit, Way, Strength by Andriy Zelinsky, a military chaplain, political scientist and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Ukrainian Veterans Fund. The dedication to the book, published by the Wheel of Life Publishing House, reads: “To the Ukrainian Warrior with gratitude”. Anatomy of a Warrior is created from the inseparable unity of three parts – Spirit, Path and Power, which are presented in three chapters of the book with short motivational texts.

Zhytomyr oblast

According to Zhytomyr RMA, representatives of Zhytomyr Polytechnic University 

took part in a training course for trainers of future veterans’ assistants in Kyiv. The course is part of a pilot project of the Ministry for Veterans Affairs to introduce the institute of a veteran’s assistant in Ukraine. Future assistants will be trained at the Veteran Development Centres established on the basis of these universities at the initiative of the Ministry for Veterans.

The regional employment service reported that 551 vouchers were issued to residents of Zhytomyr Oblast to pay for training to acquire a new profession or speciality.

The State Ecological Inspectorate of the Polissia District reported that a briefing on fire prevention in the ecosystems of Zhytomyr Oblast was held. 

500 rescuers from all over the region are practising firefighting tactics and strategy in closed and smoky rooms in Zhytomyr using the Cobra system. The conditions are as close to real-life as possible.

Viktoria Krasnopir, head of the city council’s social policy department, said that in Zhytomyr, inspections will be carried out among about 280 families to confirm the information about the free accommodation of about 800 IDPs.

Students and teachers of a Zhytomyr lyceum donated a car for the military. Part of the money for its purchase was raised during the Donate Instead of Flowers campaign, which parents and teachers organised on September 1.

Sumy oblast

According to Sumy RMA, at night and in the morning, the enemy fired three times at the border. There were 10 mortar and artillery attacks on the territory of Svesa and Krasnopilsk communities. 

The Sumy RMA reported that russians fired a total of 32 times at the border, with 202 explosions. The Khotin, Krasnopillia, Myropil, Seredyna-Buda, Velykopysarivka, Bilopillia, Yunakivka and Esman communities were shelled. The enemy attacked with mortars, artillery, a tank, AGS and SPG, dropped explosive ordnance from UAVs, and launched 4 missiles from a helicopter. As a result of hostile shelling of Seredyna Buda community, 2 local residents were injured. 

During the session of the Sumy City Council, it was decided to posthumously award the title of “Honorary Citizen of Sumy” to eight servicemen. These are Dmytro Buyval, Volodymyr Kurylenko, Oleh Bezveselnyi, Andrii Dmytriiev, Andrii Honchar, Hennadii Voronin, Bohdan Belashov and Oleksandr Onishchenko.

The French humanitarian organisation Acted has paid out money to people who suffered from the russian army’s strikes on September 7 and 8 in Sumy. 302 people have received funds. The total amount of payments to the victims was over UAH 2 million.

Chernihiv oblast

According to SBGS, russians fired 11 times at the border of Chernihiv Oblast from their territory. There were 109 explosions: 18 mortar attacks towards Hremyach, Vilchyky and Krasny Khutir; 22 attacks with multiple rocket launchers towards Senkivka; 67 attacks with mortars, multiple rocket launchers and 2 launches of unguided aerial vehicles towards Karpovychi and Leonivka. 

Chernihiv Oblast State Emergency Service reported that the sappers of Chernihiv Oblast are helping to clear the territories of Kharkiv and Donetsk oblasts of russian ammunition. This exchange of sappers has been taking place since November 2022. The sappers also took part in demining in Mykolaiv Oblast.

On the eve of the City Day, employees of municipal enterprises received awards For the Defence of Chernihiv. Oleksandr Lomako, Acting Mayor of Chernihiv, presented the awards. He reported that in February-March 2022, utility workers continued to remove garbage, clear rubble, and plant flowers despite the hostilities.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

 The enemy sent two drones to the region. The first one (preliminary ZALA) was shot down by our Air Force over Kryvyi Rih region. Another one (preliminary Shahed) was also destroyed by a unit of our sky defenders from the Skhid (East) PMC.

Overnight the invaders attacked Nikopol region again. They shelled Myroce, Marhanets community and Nikopol with artillery. They also targeted Chervonohryhorivka community twice. 5 residential buildings, 2 cars and 2 power lines were damaged.

In the afternoon, the enemy shelled with artillery and attacked Nikopol district twice with drones. Marhanets and Chervonohryhorivka communities were under attack.

A UAV hit Chervonohryhorivka community and damaged 2 private buildings, 2 outbuildings and a non-residential building.

As a result of shelling in Marhanets, dry grass caught on fire and the fire was extinguished. An infrastructure facility, a residential building and a power line were damaged.

Vinnytsia oblast

​​ Students of the Higher Vocational School No. 1 in Vinnytsia prepare pastry for IDPs and soldiers. 1-2 year students bake bread and muffins. They do this as part of their manufacturing courses. In one of the workshops, second-year students make cookies and buns for the military. Local volunteers provide the raw materials. They make muffins and bread when there is a demand from IDPs and the soldiers.

19 veterans’ assistants were trained and received certificates. The training was at the Veteran Development Centre which was created at Vinnytsia National Technical University. 16 Vinnytsia residents, who were trained as veteran assistants, will be employed and provided with a job. At the expense of city authorities, they have purchased equipment and stationery, and will get paid depending on the services they provide. The state budget will fund everything until the end of the year and the head of the office will get paid by the local community.

Kirovohrad oblast

On 13 September, Oleksandr Smetanskyi, born in 1988, was killed during a combat mission near Novomaiorske settlement, Donetsk oblast.

On 16 September, a senior soldier Ivan Fomin, born in 1988, was killed during a combat mission in Sadove village, Kherson oblast.

Poltava oblast

At night, russians several times attacked Poltava oblast. Unfortunately, there was a hit to the oil refinery in Kremenchuk. A fire broke out. All relevant services are operating at the scene. The fire is being extinguished. 20 rescue vehicles and about 100 personnel of the State Emergency Service are involved. The plant’s operations is temporarily suspended.

The rest of the country is helping side by side the de-occupied villages in Kherson oblast. Experts from Poltava region examined 100% of the damaged facilities in four settlements: Bruskynske, Tverdomedove, Bezvodne and  Ishchenko village. As a result, 138 defect reports were made. The specialists also continue to repair houses in Pravdyne and Chkalove. They have already restored 40 households. In total, work is ongoing in 96 residential properties.

Cherkasy oblast

A school in Cherkasy raised UAH 38K at a charity fair. The funds will be used to help the Armed Forces of Ukraine units. 15 primary school classes, parents and teachers participated in the campaign. The fair was organised in the school yard.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Yesterday, russian military personnel carried out 128 strikes on 24 cities and villages in the Zaporizhzhia oblast. The enemy conducted 5 MLRS (Multiple Launch Rocket System) attacks on Novodarivka, Levadne, and Stepove, as well as 12 UAV attacks on Kaniiske, Orikhiv, Novodarivka, Malynivka, Stepnohirsk, Stepove, and Mali Shcherbaky. Additionally, they launched 6 air strikes on Orikhiv, Robotyne, and Mala Tokmachka. Out of these, 105 artillery attacks targeted the areas near frontline settlements, including Huliaipole, Zaliznychne, Charivne, Levadne, Olhivske, Bilohiria, Poltavka, Lobkove, Piatyhatky, Pavlivka, and Kamianske. There have been 35 reports of damage to residential buildings, agricultural structures, and infrastructure objects. Specifically, due to russian shelling, the fire station of the State Emergency Service in Orikhiv was damaged.

It is reported that russian forces attacked a vehicle carrying Swedish journalists in Stepnohirsk. As a result, the journalists’ vehicle and filming equipment were destroyed. The journalists suffered minor injuries, but two police officers accompanying the team were injured. Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Oleh Nikolenko, condemned the actions of russian military personnel regarding the drone attack on the Swedish journalists’ vehicle.

Oleksandr Chub, the head of the Tokmak RMA reported that russian military personnel do not allow vehicles with Ukrainian license plates to cross the border of Tokmak region. One must have a russian passport to use public transportation or services provided by carriers.

It was reported that wards in one of the medical facilities in the regional center were renovated with the support of the international organization “Licht im Osten.”

Twenty paintings by local artist Svyryd Hovina from Huliaypole were evacuated. Currently, the collection has been moved to storage in Zaporizhzhia. His collection consists of 20 paintings created between the 1950s and 1980s. The paintings were kept in Svyrid Hovina’s family home, but due to russian shelling, the residence was damaged.

Mykolaiv oblast

On the afternoon of September 20, russian occupying forces once again shelled Ochakiv. Buildings and vehicles belonging to local residents were damaged as the results of shelling. A fire broke out in an open area. The firefighters from the 22nd State Fire and Rescue Unit promptly extinguished the fire, covering an area of 500 square meters, and prevented it from spreading to private residential buildings.There were no casualties.

“Mykolaivvodokanal” is participating in one of the largest investment projects of the Ukrainian government and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development. As part of this project, the company is undergoing significant updates to its fleet and technical equipment. Today, the municipal enterprise received six pieces of equipment, including wheel loaders, an excavator with a hydraulic hammer, and a single-bucket front-end mini-loader. The rest of equipment is expected to be received by june, 2024. They expect to receive a complex for pipe sanitation, a special vehicle for transporting this complex, and 10 emergency response vehicles. This was announced by the Mayor of Mykolaiv, Oleksandr Senkevych.

The Barnahus center, which provides support to children who have suffered violence or witnessed it, has resumed its operations in Mykolaiv. The Mykolaiv center is the second of its kind in Ukraine and was established in cooperation between the city council, UNICEF in Ukraine, and the Ukrainian Foundation for Public Health. The center was opened before the full-scale invasion, in early 2022. However, due to the military actions in Ukraine and constant shelling of the city, it had to suspend its operations.

Odesa oblast

On the evening of September 20, the russian army deployed the surface ship “Cyclone” in the Black Sea, which can be equipped with up to eight “Kalibr” type missiles. The level of missile threat remains high. This information was reported by the “South” Operational Command.

A documentary investigation film about the terrorist attack in Serhiivka was presented in Odesa. On September 19, the premiere of the documentary “Terrorist Attack in Serhiivka: who from russian military are involved in the killing of Ukrainians” took place at the Hrushevsky Library. The film investigates the nighttime shelling of the settlement that occurred on July 1, 2022.

The volunteer project “Donor Odesa” has been actively operating in Odesa dince the beginning of the war. Over 6,000 blood donations were made within this project, which exceeds pre-war figures by more than 1.5 times. Olena Velmozhko, the curator of the “Donor Odesa” project, shared this information.

A charitable campaign called “Brave Hryvnia” is ongoing in Ukraine, aiming to collect coins for the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. From September 4 to November 30 of this year, the National Bank of Ukraine, along with its partners, invites people to participate in this charitable initiative to raise funds for the Ukrainian army. The goal of the initiative is to unite the efforts of Ukrainians and collect funds to support the Ukrainian military. Kherson oblast

Today, the occupiers launched at least nine guided aerial bombs on residential areas in the region. The shelling hit Tiahynka, Mykolaivka, and Odradokamianka. Due to enemy shelling, power outages occurred in Bilozerka, and one local resident was wounded.

Around 3 AM today, occupiers attacked a residential building in Komyshanyi. A 19-year-old girl sustained injuries and was hospitalized with blast trauma.

Yesterday, the enemy conducted 118 attacks, firing a total of 589 projectiles from mortars, artillery, Grad rocket launchers, anti-tank guided missiles, automatic grenade launchers, drones, tanks, and aircraft. The enemy fired 23 projectiles at the city of Kherson. 40 private and 5 multi-story buildings, a university, 2 hospitals, a cultural center, garages, warehouses, and 9 vehicles, including cranes, trolleybuses, and agricultural machinery were damaged. Due to russian aggression, 2 people have been killed, and 4 others have been injured. The police initiated 24 criminal investigations into war crimes committed by russian military personnel in Kherson oblast.

The south defence forces continue to fulfill their combat tasks. Yesterday, defenders destroyed 28 occupiers, 1 tank, 1 armored personnel carrier (BTR-82), 1 howitzer, 2 pieces of armored vehicles, 3 boats, and 1 FPV-type unmanned aerial vehicle.

80% of utilities in Kherson are ready for the heating season.There are damage to utility lines due to constant shelling causing, and utility workers are working on restoring them. Firewood will be provided for areas without electricity and gas. Negotiations are also underway with charitable foundations to provide heating assistance to the population.

Rivne oblast

The project aims to increase the potential of a qualified workforce for the reconstruction of Ukraine.
