It has been the 557 th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

The enemy launched 1 missile and 39 air strikes, 24 MLRS attacks at the positions of Ukrainian troops and various settlements. The russian terrorist attacks have killed and wounded civilians. Residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure were damaged.

Ukraine is still under the threat of missile and air strikes.

There were 25 combat engagements.

Towards Volyn and Polissia, there were no significant changes. 

Towards Siversk and Sloboda, the enemy  launched an airstrike in the vicinity of Strilecha, Kharkiv oblast. The invaders fired from mortar and artillery at more than 10 settlements, including Vorozhba, Mezenivka, Kindrativka, Ulanove, Sumy oblast, Vovchansk, Hatyshche, Budarky, Neskuchne, Kharkiv oblast.

Towards Kupiansk, the settlements of Topoli, Dvorichanske, Kolodiazne, Kyslivka, Kharkiv oblast came under enemy artillery fire.

Towards Lyman, the enemy conducted unsuccessful offensives in the vicinity of Novoiehorivka, Luhansk oblast. The invaders launched airstrikes in the vicinities of Cherneshchyna, Kharkiv oblast, Bilohorivka, Luhansk oblast, and Spirne, Donetsk oblast. The enemy fired artillery at more than 10 settlements, including Nevske, Bilohorivka, Luhansk oblast,  Verkhniokamyanske, Spirne, Rozdolivka, Donetsk oblast.

Towards Bakhmut, the enemy launched air strikes in the vicinity of Bohdanivka, Klishchiyivka, Kurdiumivka, Pivnichne, Donetsk oblast. Over 10 settlements, including Bohdanivka, Chasiv Yar, Ivanivske, Pivnichne, Donetsk oblast, suffered from artillery shelling. 

Towards Avdiivka, the enemy conducted unsuccessful offensives in the vicinity of Avdiivka, Donetsk oblast. They continue to fire from artillery and mortar at various settlements, including Nevelske, Karlivka, Avdiyivka, Sieverne, Novokalynove, Donetsk oblast.

Towards Mariinka, the Ukrainian Defense Forces continue to hold back the russian offensive in the vicinity of Mariinka, Donetsk oblast. The invaders fired from artillery at the settlements of Krasnohorivka, Mariinka, Heorhiyivka, Pobieda, Novomykhailivka, Donetsk oblast. 

Towards Shakhtarsk, the invaders fired from artillery at more than 10 settlements, including Vuhledar, Vodyane, Prechystivka, Urozhaine, Donetsk oblast.

Towards Zaporizhzhia, the invaders conducted unsuccessful offensives in the vicinity of Pryiutne, Zaporizhzhia oblast. The adversary launched air strikes in the vicinity of Mala Tokmachka, Novodanylivka and Robotyne, Zaporizhzhia oblast.The enemy fired from artillery at more than 15 settlements, including Levadne, Malynivka, Chervone, Huliaipilske, Orikhiv, Kamyanske, Zaporizhzhia oblast.

Towards Kherson, the enemy launched air strikes in the vicinity of Antonivka, Mykolaivka and Olhivka, Kherson oblast. The settlement of Mykolaivka, Kherson oblast, and the city of Kherson suffered from enemy artillery and mortar shelling.

At the same time, the Ukrainian Defense Forces continue to conduct the offensive operation towards Melitopol, consolidating their positions and conducting counter-battery fire.

The Ukrainian Air Force launched 9 air strikes on the buildup of manpower, weapon, and military equipment, as well as 5 airstrikes on the anti-aircraft missile systems.

The Ukrainian rocket and artillery troops hit 10 artillery systems at their firing positions and 1 anti-aircraft missile system of the enemy.

According to the commander of the “Tavria” group Oleksandr Tarnavskyi, the Armed Forces of Ukraine broke through russia’s first line of defense in the south. Currently, Ukrainian troops are expanding the front of the breakthrough in both directions.

During August 2023, russia launched 231 kamikaze drones and 167 missiles on the territory of Ukraine. This was reported by the monitoring group. Ukrainian air defense managed to destroy 152 UAVs and 92 missiles.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

Oleh Syniehubov, Head of Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, reported that yesterday settlements of Kharkiv, Chuhuiv, Kupiansk and Izium regions wrre under russian attacks.

Specifically, the enemy shelled Kozacha Lopan, Ohirtseve, Vovchanski Khytory, Varvarivka, Kamianka and other settlements with artillery, mortars and aviation.

The enemy attacked Cherneshchyna and Shyikivka villages, Izium region, with guided bombs. In Cherneshchyna, the bomb hit near the local school. In Shyikivka, private residential building and outbuildings were damaged. There were no casualties.

Mine clearance is ongoing. Pyrotechnics of the State Emergency Service examined more than 4.5 hectares of the territory and defused 55 explosive ordnance.

Donetsk oblast

According to Donetsk Regional Military Administration, yesterday evening, russians shelled Kramatorsk with Smerch MRLs, damaging 4 buildings and moren than 20 graves in the local cemetery. 

Towards Volnovakha, 2 people were killed and 2 more injured, a building was partially destroyed in Vuhledar. A cultural establishment was damaged in Novoukrainka.

Towards Donetsk, russians attacked the outskirts of Kurakhove in the morning. There were isolated attacks in Avdiivka.

Towards Horlivka, a residential building and transmission lines were damaged in Toretsk. Rozdolivka and Vasiukivka of Soledar community were targeted.

Towards Lysychansk, 1 building in Zvanivka and 1 in Vasiukivka were destroyed. Lyman was shelled 20 times.

Luhansk oblast

According to Luhansk Regional Military Administration, after a short pause, the invaders became active again near Novoiehorivka. It took them some time to recover from significant losses in personnel and equipment. Specifically, several enemy tanks were burned over the past week. However, yesterday’s offensive also failed to bring results for the enemy. Also russians conducted air strikes near Bilohorivka and Miasozharivka. Makiivka, Nevske and Bilohorivka were hit with enemy artillery.

In the villages around Svatove, russians also failed the passportisation in time for their September elections. In order to increase the turnout, they continue to issue russian documents on election days. Older people are threatened by being deprived of social benefits, being unable to use administrative services and being denied in medical assistance.

Since last year, Lysychansk utility workers have not been paid their salaries, this includes representatives of the local water utility. Recently, water supply has stopped in those houses where it was restored earlier. The population is forced to use technical water which they also need to wait for at the points of delivery.

A stocking factory in occupied Rubizhne was almost destroyed by enemy shells and looted by russians. This is a production facility, which operates more than 27 years, has not been stopped by the war. Despite the fact that all the facilities, material and technical base and newly purchased equipment remained in the temporarily occupied territories but the production was restored in the Lviv oblast.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

Kyiv RMA reported that compensation for destroyed or damaged housing in the amount of almost 89 million hryvnias has already been paid under the eRenovation program in Irpin. Kyiv RMA, together with communities, is working on speeding up the consideration of applications.

The most massive event on government and community communication “Kyiv-2023 Workshop” took place in the capital. It was attended by civil society organizations, active representatives of the territorial community of the city, structural divisions of the city government, patrol police, and the State Emergency Service. During the event, 90 locations with activities from various organizations worked in Shevchenko Park in the center of Kyiv, dozens of locations in all districts of the capital.

On September 2, the NGO “Ukrainian Women’s Guard” once again held training on financial literacy within the project “Self-employment and economic security of women in Ukraine during the war and post-war period”. The participants, led by the head of the organization Olena Biletska, immersed themselves in studying financial literacy and the principles of cooperation using the Cash Flow game. At the end of the meeting, each participant made her own conclusions about her positions in life. The educational game lasted 4 hours.

Irpin, Hostomel and Kotsyubynske will cooperate at the community level. The memorandum on cooperation was signed by the city authorities of Irpin, the head of the Hostomel settlement military administration, Serhiy Smal, and the head of the Kotsyubynske settlement council, Serhiy Danish. This will help to more effectively solve urgent issues for all three communities and will provide more opportunities for development.

The KCSA reported that the largest flag with wishes for the defenders of Ukraine was created in Kyiv, in Shevchenko Park this weekend. The 10-meter flag collected 818 wishes and sincere words of gratitude to the Ukrainian military from ordinary residents of Kyiv and guests of the capital. The flag was handed over to the Military Hub in Kyiv, where the military will be able to see it.

Zhytomyr oblast

Zhytomyr RMA reported that 2,529 objects damaged due to the russian invasion have already been restored in Zhytomyr oblast, including 2,277 objects of the housing stock. To date, 3,299 damaged and destroyed objects have been entered into the register, 2,955 of which are private residential buildings, apartments and residential premises.

During the use of the electronic public service eRenovation, citizens submitted 397 applications for compensation for the restoration of housing in various communities of the oblast, which has minor damage. The owners of 227 damaged homes have already received funds in the total amount of UAH 21 million on their card accounts.

Oleksandr Shvetsov, a veteran of the anti-terrorist operation from Zhytomyr, together with four fellows went on a hiking trip through the Carpathians to collect 10 million UAH for the Ukrainian military. All five participants of the campaign are veterans of the war with russia, who were wounded and lost limbs while defending Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Luhansk, and Donetsk regions in different years of the russian-Ukrainian war. The participants additionally carry bags with 10 kilograms of sand in their shoulder bags, and for every million collected, they will drop a kilogram.

Sumy oblast

The National Police of the Sumy oblast reported that russian troops opened fire on 16 settlements of the oblast, more than 100 hits were recorded. As a result of enemy shelling, one person was killed and six people were injured. The cultural center, 2 private houses, 2 cars, the premises of the former utility company, an outbuilding, a gas pipeline and power lines were also damaged.

According to the investigation, on September 2, 2023, at around 4:30 p.m., the occupiers, using methods of warfare prohibited by international law, fired with artillery from the territory of the russian federation into the town of Seredyna-Buda, Shostka region, at a time when law enforcement officers were recording the consequences of the previous shelling. A 32-year-old police officer was killed, and two more police officers were injured. One civilian was also wounded. In addition, as a result of the enemy’s attack, two buildings and a car were damaged.

Sumy RMA reported that the russian army carried out a mortar shelling of Svesa hromada – 2 explosions were recorded.

In the morning, Vorozhba was under enemy shelling. As the mayor Andrii Druzchenko reported, the artillery shelling began at 7:30 a.m. – 6 hits from self-propelled guns were recorded. 8 residential buildings, farm buildings, private vehicles and garages were damaged.

In the Krasnopillia community, mine safety lessons were organized for the civilian population. Training is conducted in a shelter by servicemen of the 13th separate hunting brigade, one of whose divisions is currently defending the borders of Sumy oblast. Specialists demonstrated to local residents the types of mines and grenades, explained where and how they can be installed and what threat they pose.

Chernihiv oblast

The russians fired 12 times on the border of Chernihiv oblast. As reported in the Chernihiv border detachment, the Novhorod-Siverskyi, Snovsk and Semenivka communities came under shelling. Border guards recorded more than 100 hits from mortars and AGS.

Chernihiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office reported that the commander of the russian federation, who during the occupation of the village of Lukashivka by the russian military on March 10, 2022, shot a serviceman of the Armed Forces and tortured civilians in Chernihiv oblast will be tried in absentia.

The Chernihiv regional department of education and science reported that educational institutions of the oblast received 40 school buses, which were purchased with the funds of donors and international partners. In addition, this academic year they plan to purchase 13 more buses with a subvention allocated from the state budget in the amount of UAH 27 million. For the organization of full transportation of children to educational institutions throughout the oblast, there is still a need for more than 60 school buses.

Oleksandr Borodavko, director of the Chernihiv region of JSC “Ukrposhta” announced that about 30,000 new energy-saving lamps can be exchanged by cultural institutions, public social protection bodies, physical culture and sports institutions, condominiums in Chernihiv oblast. The second phase of exchanging old incandescent lamps for new LED ones for legal entities started in the second half of August 2023.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

According to Mykola Lukashuk, head of the regional council, russians shelled Nikopol region with artillery and Grad shells at night. They hit Pokrovske community. A car caught on fire. It has been extinguished. An infrastructure facility, a country house, 5 multi-storey buildings, and 4 cars were damaged.

Vinnytsia oblast

​ Initiated by the Ministry of Veterans, the training of veteran assistants has started in Vinnytsia to prepare 20 future specialists in veteran service and support. Upon completion of the training, they will be employed at the Veterans’ Assistant Service Centre, which was established on the basis of the city’s social services centre.

Kirovohrad oblast

Smoline and Novoarkhanhelsk territorial communities received new class B ambulances within the framework of the Ministry of Health programme. These vehicles will be used directly in the communities. They are equipped with an electrocardiograph, defibrillator, pulse oximeter, pneumatic splints, oxygen concentrator, cervical collars, and an emergency kit.

Poltava oblast

Kobeliaky community raised over UAH 17K for the Armed Forces of Ukraine during the “Everything will be Ukraine” charity fair.

Dmytro Romanov, head of Poltava Regional Military Administration, reported that Ukrainian defenders of the 116th Brigade of Territorial Defense received a DJI Mavic 3 quadcopter and equipment for its remote launch from Poltava oblast. 

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Ukrainian forces have broken through the first line of defense held by russian forces near Zaporizhzhia after weeks of careful demining. They are now anticipating faster progress as Ukrainian forces advance towards the weaker second line of defense of the russian army. Brigadier General Oleksandr Tarnavskyi, the commander of the operational-strategic group of troops “Tavria,” revealed this in an exclusive interview with The Observer.

Yesterday, the enemy conducted 120 shelling attacks on 25 populated areas in the Vasylivka and Polohy regionss. russian forces carried out 91 artillery shelling attacks on the territory of Huliaipole, Orikhiv, Novodarivka, Levadne, Mala Tokmachka, Shcherbakivka, Mayinivka, Kamianei, Stepove, and other villages along the front line. Fourteen aerial strikes targeted Orikhiv and Robotyne, while 11 shelling attacks with multiple rocket launchers hit Orikhiv, Huliaipole, Chervone, Novodarivka, Novodanylivka, Levadne, and Lukianivske. Moreover, Novodarivka, Levadne, Novoivanivka, and Plavni were attacked by drones. Damage or destruction of 21 civilian infrastructure objects was recorded.

On September 2, six fires broke out in the front-line city of Orikhiv as a result of massive russian shelling. Firefighters extinguished the fires, and there were no casualties or injuries.

Emergency services’ sappers confiscated 3 rounds from a handheld anti-tank grenade launcher and 1 mortar mine in a populated area in Zaporizhzhia oblast. The explosive items were safely disposed of in accordance with safety procedures.

Mykolaiv oblast

Yesterday, russian forces conducted four strikes on the waters of Ochakiv community in Mykolaiv oblast. There were no reported casualties. This information was provided by the head of Mykolaiv RMA, Vitalii Kim.

36-year-old local resident blew up on a mine in Chornomorka, Mykolaiv oblast. This was reported by Serhii Bratchuk, the head of the Public Council at Odesa RMA, citing information from the “South” Operational Command. The man ignored warning signs indicating the presence of mines and went swimming, resulting in a fatal explosion.

DTEK Renewebles company has received an award from the American magazine POWER for the courage and resilience of the company’s energy workers who constructed the first phase of the Tylihulska Wind Power Plant with a capacity of 114 MW, despite being located just 100 kilometers from the front line.

Three thousand residents of Mykolaiv oblast have  joined the “Restoration Army.” This program provides an opportunity for people who have not found permanent employment to receive a salary and extends the period of their financing by the employment center. This information was shared by the director of  Mykolaiv Regional Employment Center, Dmytro Oboronko.

Odesa oblast

According to the “South” Operational Command, russian army attacked the port infrastructure on Danube River in Odesa oblast using iranian combat drones of the “Shakhed” type. The occupiers carried out several waves of attacks using UAVs “Shakhed-136/131” from the south and southeast directions (Cape Chauda, Crimea, and Primorsko-Ohtarsk, russia). In total, 25 “Shakhed-136/131” combat drones launches were detected, with 22 of them being destroyed. As a result of the attacks, the port infrastructure was damaged, and a fire broke out, which was promptly extinguished by the State Emergency Service (DSNS). Two civilian port workers were injured and hospitalized. All relevant services are working at the scene. Law enforcement agencies are documenting the consequences of russia’s war crimes.

On September 2, a drone of the russian army was shot down in the Odesa blast. It was a reconnaissance-strike UAV Mohajer-6, a rare drone of iranian origin. This information was reported by the “South” Operational Command.

The russian army deployed a small missile ship of the “Buyan-M” project, equipped with eight “Kalibr” missiles, to the Black Sea for combat duty. As of the morning, the russian naval group consisted of 12 units, with ten ships in the Black Sea and two in the Sea of Azov. This information was provided by the “South” Operational Command.

Illegally placed advertising billboards on the M-05 Kyiv-Odesa highway were dismantled. All dismantled metal structures are planned to be transferred to military units. This was reported by the Service for the Restoration and Development of Infrastructure in Odesa oblast.

Kherson oblast

On the night of September 3, the russian army shelled Kherson, injuring two people. This was reported by the press office of Kherson RMA. The shelling of the city occurred at around 01:00. Additionally, yesterday at around 22:00, russians shelled Bilozirka, where an elderly man sustained leg injuries.

Yesterday, the enemy carried out 79 shelling attacks, firing 510 rounds from mortars, artillery, tanks, “Grad” MLRS, drones, aircraft, and ZU-23 anti-aircraft guns. The enemy fired 14 shells at the city of Kherson. russian forces targeted residential areas of populated settlements in the region, as well as a religious structure in the city of Kherson. The occupiers shelled a kindergarten in Bilozirka with rocket artillery, damaging the roof and shattering several windows. Due to russian aggression, one person was killed, and six others have been injured.

On September 2, the Defense Forces destroyed 95 russian military personnel, five armored vehicles, and three boats used for maneuvering in Kherson oblast. This information was provided by the head of the Unified Coordination Press Center of the Defense and Security of the South, Natalia Humeniuk.

As part of the “Shoulder to Shoulder” initiative, 15 regions of Ukraine have already constructed 360 houses in 26 villages and towns in Kherson oblast. This was reported by Kherson RMA. Inspections of objects are ongoing in the populated areas included in the second phase of the program before the start of repair work.

Volyn oblast

A memorial sign to the border guards who were killed defending the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the country was opened in Lutsk. 23 border guards from Volyn were killed defending Ukraine.

Zakarpattia oblast

During the day of September 2, 98K people and 20K vehicles crossed western borders of Ukraine with the EU and Moldova (in Chernivtsi oblast). 51K people left Ukraine last day. 30K of them crossed the border with Poland, the rest followed to other EU countries and Moldova. 47K people were followed to Ukraine over the past day, 40K of them Ukrainian citizens. 102 trucks with humanitarian aid have been issued.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

A charity fair unfolded in one of Ivano-Frankivsk’s courtyards. The purpose of Victory Yards is to collect funds for the Ukrainian military. This is the 10th time that such a charity event has been held in different parts of the community.

Lviv oblast

The RMA reported that the city and commune of Polish Losice, which are partners of Przemyśl, sent a bus for the needs of Lviv community. 

Students of Biskovych community, where over 100 students, received play sets for children thanks to the Tech StartUp School with the support of UNICEF Representative Office in Ukraine.

Sambir Central Hospital received an electrocardiograph, painkillers, hemostatic agents, dressing materials, and hygiene products from Canada.

War veterans climbed to the highest peak of Lviv oblast – Mount Pikuy. Together with the defenders, 30 people climbed the mountain – employees of Lviv RMA and all those willing. They went down to Pikuy in 2,5 hours. The travelers were accompanied by the Mountain Emergency Rescue Service and Lviv Regional Center for Emergency Medical Aid and Disaster Medicine. The partners of the ascent were the Veterans GO NGO, Superhumans Center, Borynsk community and Sambir RMA.

In Lviv, a half-marathon was held for the 7th time at distances of 21 km, 5 km and 1.6 km. The special feature of this year’s marathon is its social and charitable component – part of the funds will be donated to the Unbreakable CF. Organizers of the marathon introduced a new distance – Mile of Invincibility, and participants of the race were also heroes-defenders and indomitable Ukrainians, among them 12-year-old Yana Stepanenko, who was injured during the shelling of the station in Kramatorsk.

Andrii Makarevych, soloist of the Lviv Academic House of Organ and Chamber Music, played the piano at the Saint Panteleimon Hospital of the First Territorial Medical Association of Lviv. In this way, the musician decided to support the military, who are undergoing treatment and rehabilitation at the medical facility.

Maksym Kozytskyi, Head of Lviv RMA, received the Italian National Award – Premio Nazionale Solidarietas 2023 Mons. Cataldo Naro. The ceremony took place in Racalmuto, Sicily. Maksym Kozytskyi joined the event online.

Rivne oblast

The RMA reported that 91% of the houses in Kochubei community of Kherson oblast have already been restored. Currently, 5 brigades (27 workers) from Rivne oblast work in this community. 

The oblast planned to create safety classes in all communities by November 1. To date, 45 security classes have been created in Rivne oblast. They function in 28 communities.

A charity football match was held in Rivne. The goal of the game is to raise funds for the 457th Separate Infantry Battalion, in which residents of Rivne oblast serve. As a result, it was possible to collect almost UAH 200K.

Ternopil oblast

The battle flag of the 35th Separate Rifle Battalion of the A4048 military unit was handed over to the Museum of the National Liberation Struggle of Ternopil oblast by soldiers and veterans of the battalion. The battalion was formed in Ternopil.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Nuclear workers of Khmelnytsky NPP sent to the military a car, quadcopters, batteries and charging stations for them, an anti-drone gun, night vision devices, thermal imagers, tool kits, FPV drones, starlinks and other equipment, purchased with the funds of employees of the NPP and the Enerhoatom company. 

Chernivtsi oblast

In Khersonoblast, police officers delivered charitable aid, namely, school stationery, warm jackets, suits and shoes, to families with children affected by the war from law enforcement officers of Chernivtsi oblast.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Oleksii Reznikov, Minister of Defense of Ukraine, announced that since the war began, Western partners have continued to provide assistance to Ukraine in the form of weapons, equipment, and ammunition in the amount of about $100 billion.

Ukraine is negotiating with the EU countries on the return of top fugitive corrupt officials. “Conditionally, this will not happen on a huge scale tomorrow… Those who stole the most will go first. We will try to get them first. And the middle fish and other characters will go later,” said Denys Malyuska, Minister of Justice of Ukraine.

Germany will protect the airspace of Slovakia, which gave Ukraine air defense equipment and MiG aircraft. 2 Eurofighter combat aircraft of the 74th Squadron of the Tactical Air Force, stationed in Upper Bavaria, will be constantly ready to intercept unidentified or hostile objects in the airspace of Slovakia in the event of an emergency.

In Germany, a russian woman was not allowed on the plane because of her citizenship. She wanted to fly on the Bremen-Frankfurt-Tallinn route to get from Estonia to russia. However, the German airline Lufthansa  refused her because of her russian citizenship. As the carrier explained, Estonia has banned all citizens of the aggressor country from passing through its territory.

Maksym Kozytskyi, Head of Lviv RMA, received the Italian National Award – Premio Nazionale Solidarietas 2023 Mons. Cataldo Naro. The ceremony took place in Racalmuto, Sicily. Maksym Kozytskyi joined the event online.

Kyiv returned to the rating of the most comfortable cities by The Economist, but with a low result. The raters explained that such a low result was caused by the destruction of infrastructure due to the russian invasion. Last year, the Ukrainian capital was not included in the rating because of the war.
