War in Ukraine today: latest news, March 04, 2023 (photo)

It has been the 374th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

On March 4, the enemy launched 4 missile and 10 air strikes and fired 4 times from multiple launch rocket systems. In particular, residential buildings and civilian infrastructure in Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson oblasts were attacked, resulting in civilian casualties.

There remains a threat of missile attacks by the russian federation  high throughout Ukraine.

The enemy is focusing its main efforts on conducting offensive operations against Kupiansk, Lyman, Bakhmut, Avdiivka and Shakhtarsk. Russia-backed militants continue unsuccessful offensives in the area of Bakhmut, Avdiivka, Marinka and Vuhledar.

 The operational situation towards Volyn, Polissia, Siversk and Sloboda remained unchanged. The enemy fired mortar and artillery shells at the settlements of Bachivsk, Ulanove, Kucherivka, Bilokopytove, Starykove, Khodyne, Ryzhivka, Atynske, Holyshivske, Pavlivka and Sadky in Sumy oblast and at 22 settlements in Kharkiv oblast, including Hraniv, Hlyboke, Verkhnia Pysarivka, Hatyshche, Vovchansk, Vilcha, Bochkove, Vilkhuvatka, Dvorichanske and Dvorichna.

Towards Kupiansk and Lyman, the enemy continued to conduct offensive actions in the areas of Nevske, Serebriansky forestry and Bilohorivka in Luhansk oblast, but was unsuccessful. They shelled settlements near the contact line with artillery, namely  Hrianykivka, Kyslivka, Pishchane, and Krokhmalne in Kharkiv oblast; Stelmakhivka, Nevske, Chervonopopivka, Bilohorivka in Luhansk oblast and Terny, Spirne, Fedorivka and Rozdolivka in Donetsk oblast. 

Towards Bakhmut, the enemy is unsuccessfully trying to surround the town of Bakhmut. During the day, our soldiers repelled numerous attacks in the areas of Vasiukivka, Orikhovo-Vasylivka, Dubovo-Vasylivka, Hryhorivka and Bakhmut in Donetsk oblast. In particular, Orikhovo-Vasylivka, Zaliznyanske, Dubove-Vasylivka, Bakhmut, Klishchiyivka, Ivanivske, Chasiv Yar, Kurdyumivka, Predtechine, Oleksandr-Shultine, Ozaryanivka, Druzhba and New York were subjected to hostile attacks.

Towards Avdiivka and Shakhtarsk, the enemy unsuccessfully attacked the positions of our troops near Kamianka, Sieverne, Vodiane, Pervomaiske, Nevelske and Krasnohorivka. There were artillery and mortar attacks in the vicinity of more than 20 settlements, namely Kamianka, Avdiivka, Lastochkine, Krasnohorivka, Nevelske, Marinka, Heorhiivka, Bohoiavlenka, Vuhledar and Vremivka.

Towards Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, the enemy is on the defensive, trying to improve its tactical position to resume the offensive. They shelled the areas of more than 30 settlements with artillery, namely Malynivka, Mala Tokmachka, Novodanylivka, Novoandriivka, and Mali Shcherbaky in Zaporizhzhia oblast; Chervonyi Maiak, Kozatske, Ivanivka, Antonivka and Inzhenerne in Kherson oblast and the city of Kherson, as well as the town of Ochakiv in Mykolaiv oblast. There are casualties among civilians.

To compensate for the massive manpower shortage, the enemy continues to secretly mobilize in temporarily occupied areas of Ukraine. In particular, in Horlivka, Donetsk oblast, another wave of mobilization of local residents to the ranks of the russian occupation forces is scheduled to begin on March 5. The heads of all educational institutions received written instructions from the russian occupation administration to register men born between 1995 and 2005 for military service.

Forced passportization at temporarily occupied areas of Luhansk oblast continues. Thus, the occupiers imposed restrictions on free movement between settlements for all civilians who do not have a passport of a citizen of the russian federation. Starobilsk, Rubizhne and Stanytsia Luhanska are under restrictions. 

The city of Enerhodar, temporarily occupied by russia, and the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, are currently experiencing a catastrophic shortage of professional staff to ensure the plant’s viability. The russian occupiers employ people without appropriate education and experience, which can lead to unpredictable consequences.

Aviation of the Defense Forces conducted 12 strikes on buildups of occupants’ personnel and military equipment, as well as 2 strikes on anti-aircraft missile systems and 1 strike on the enemy’s ammunition depot.

The Ministry of Reintegration informs that Ukraine is proposing to adopt a resolution on the forced evacuation of children from the areas of hostilities. Such decisions will be made in relation to certain settlements where active hostilities are ongoing. Parents or guardians will not be allowed to refuse the mandatory evacuation.

Denys Shmyhal, Prime Minister of Ukraine, says that the State Anti-Corruption Program was approved. This program is aimed at more effectively preventing corruption in various spheres of people’s lives and ensuring inevitable responsibility for corruption.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reports that russian troops shelled at least 26 settlements in Kharkiv oblast. The enemy continues to focus its efforts on offensive actions against Kupyansk .

The State Border Guard Service informs that in Kharkiv oblast, border guards eliminated a russian drone that was reconnoitering the positions of Ukrainian defenders. The russian soldier who was flying the drone filmed himself and the drone’s launch site.

On March 3, the border settlements of Kharkiv, Kupiansk and Chuhuiv regions were again shelled by the occupiers.

The shelling of Kupiansk damaged at least 9 residential buildings, and destroyed outbuildings and garages. A medical facility was also damaged. There were no casualties.

In Vovchansk, Chuhuiv region, a private residential building was damaged by enemy fire. 

In Berestove village of the Kupiansk region, a 52-year-old civilian man was injured by hostile fire and hospitalized in moderate condition.

Mine danger remains high in the region. This morning in the village of Chaikivka, Chuhuiv region, a 37-year-old civilian man was blown up on a tripwire when he went fishing on the river.

Donetsk oblast

Ukrainian troops repelled an assault against Avdiivka and destroyed 8 units of russian equipment. This was reported by the separate presidential brigade named after Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky. They added that the Ukrainian military also captured six russian occupiers.

Brigadier General Viktor Khorenko, Commander of the Special Operations Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, inspected activities of subordinate units defending Bakhmut and engaged in combat operations in Donetsk and Luhansk regions. This was reported by the press service of the Ukrainian Special Operations Forces Command.

Evacuation from Avdiivka has intensified, with police evacuating about 40 people in two days. In particular, eight people, including four children, were evacuated from the village of Pereizne, located 15 kilometers from the temporarily occupied Soledar and 25 kilometers from Bakhmut. 

Over the past 24 hours, russian troops conducted 38 attacks on 18 localities in Donetsk region. In Druzhkivka, they hit an apartment building from the air. Velyka Novosilka was shelled with Grad multiple rocket launchers. A hospital and a school were shelled in Maksymilianivka.

On the morning of March 4, russian occupation forces shelled Chasiv Yar in Donetsk oblast, injuring one person.

The night before, russians hit Kamyshivka of the Novohrodivka community with Smerch systems – a medical facility was damaged, no casualties.

Towards Donetsk, 8 houses were damaged in the Ocheretyne community: in Soloviovo, Tonenke and Lastochkine. In the evening, Avdiivka was shelled, and houses on three streets were damaged. In the Kurakhove community, Kurakhove and Kurakhivka came under fire, in Marinka community – Maryinka, Krasnohorivka and Katerynivka, without casualties.

Towards Horlivka, 1 person was injured in Chasiv Yar in the morning. In the Toretsk community, 5 houses were damaged. In the Soledar community, Dubovo-Vasylivka, Orikhovo-Vasylivka and Minkivka are under fire.

Towards Lysychansk, 1 person was injured in the Zvanivka community, 6 houses were damaged in Pereizne and 3 in Zvanivka. A house was destroyed in Siversk and industrial facilities were damaged. 11 hits of Torske and Zarichne of the Liman community was recorded.

According to Pavlo Kyrylenko, Head of the Donetsk Military Administration, 2 more residents of Donetsk oblast were killed by russians – in Maksymilianivka and Siversk.

Luhansk oblast

The last day was noted for unsuccessful russian offensives near Kreminna and Bilohorivka towards Kupiansk and Lyman.

The occupiers fired artillery at Makiivka, Nevske, Kreminna, Dibrova and Bilohorivka.

Serhii Haidai, Head of the Luhansk Regional Military Administration, informs that near Kreminna, the russian army is trying to push our defenders through. In Bilohorivka, the National Guard is repelling waves of enemy attacks. Yet, there are no enemy breakthroughs along the front line.

The Luhansk Military Administration reported that occupiers are going door-to-door and offering russian passports. Collaborators – senior civil servants – are working remotely. Social assistance payments have been extremely complicated in the Svatove region .

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

Roberta Metsola, Head of the European Parliament, arrived in Kyiv t. She met with Ruslan Stefanchuk, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. They discussed Ukraine’s path to full membership in the EU, sanctions against russia and support for the peace formula initiative proposed by the Ukrainian president.

After a working visit to the city of Ciechowice-Jedrzejcie Irpin mayor Oleksandr Markushyn announced that Irpin may have new sister cities in Poland. These are cities in the Silesian region in the south of Poland.

A rehabilitation center for the military will be set up in Kyiv. As reported by the Kyiv City State Administration, rehabilitation therapist Adam Badir, who developed rehabilitation centers in Israel, the UAE, Kazakhstan, and other countries, visited the capital. He will provide advice on how to work with patients, and arrange wards and rooms for effective rehabilitation. The project will be as cost-effective as possible and adapted to international rehabilitation standards.

Kyiv regional prosecution office has submitted to the court the case of a russian serviceman who shot civilians in Kyiv oblast. The police found that in March last year, near the village of Mriia, Bucha region, russian soldiers shot two unarmed civilians. After that, they robbed the premises of the company and loaded the loot into a car. The crime was recorded by video surveillance cameras. The suspect faces up to 15 years in prison or life imprisonment.

The Kyiv City State Administration reported that despite warmer weather and no power blackouts, invincibility centers will not be closed in the capital. Currently, there are 728 heating centers in the capital, and another 284 centers are ready to open if necessary. All of them are provided with generators and other necessary equipment. In total, almost 36 K people have visited the city’s invincibility centers since their opening.

A new educational platform was presented in Kyiv to help students adapt to the online learning environment. It is expected that each student will have an ID profile, to which the educational chronology and academic progress are linked. The KCSA expects that the platform will allow for the transfer of document flow into an electronic format, so that information will be protected from physical destruction and available online.

Zhytomyr oblast

Charitable aid from the United Nations Children’s Fund UNICEF Ukraine has arrived in Zhytomyr oblast. Electric heaters, thermal clothing and winter clothing sets for children, first aid kits, sleeping sets, and necessary toiletries were delivered to the communities for socially vulnerable people and internally displaced persons.

Lindlar, Germany will become a twin city of Radomyshl in Zhytomyr oblast. After signing an official agreement, the cities will cooperate in education, culture, medicine, sports, and other areas. According to Radomyshl Mayor Volodymyr Teterskyi, the cooperation will contribute to the economic development of the community. Residents of Lindlar have repeatedly donated humanitarian aid and vehicles to Radomyshl.

In Zhytomyr oblast, the School of Superheroes for children’s hospital patients has been running since the beginning of the full-scale russian invasion. In total, up to 400 patients of the regional children’s hospital receive treatment and education during a month. The educational center employs tutors and teachers in all subjects. Since the beginning of October last year, this volunteer project has received government funding.

Sumy oblast

According to the Sumy RMA, over the past 24 hours, the russians shelled 6 territorial communities – Shalyhine, Krasnopillia, Bilopillia, Esman, Hlukhiv, and Yunakivka. In total, there were 121 shells fired from mortars, artillery, MLRS, UAVs, tanks, and ATGMs.

A local resident was killed as a result of mortar attacks on the village of Starykove in the Shalyhine community – he died of shrapnel wounds in the garden near his house. Hostile shelling damaged three residential buildings and a power line in Khodyne. Also, a residential building was damaged in Kucherivka.

The enemy continues shelling the border areas. The ‘North’ Operational Command reported about 20 enemy shells fired from self-propelled artillery systems on the outskirts of Vovkivka; 8 mortar shells – in the area of Novovasylivka, 3 shells –  on Kharkivtsi, and 15 shells – near the village of Studenok.

According to Taras Savchenko, Acting Head of the Sumy Regional Military Administration, bridges, apartment buildings and hospitals remain a priority in Sumy oblast. 9 of the 16 bridges in the oblast that were blown up as a result of hostilities were restored over the past year. A third of the infrastructure damaged by the shelling has also been restored (about 4,800 facilities were damaged).

The Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine reported that a rector of a Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) church is detained in Sumy oblast for passing intelligence information to the enemy on the number of military personnel deployed in the oblast and their capabilities, as well as information about heads of local authorities, law enforcement agencies and civic activists. This person transmitted intelligence data to an FSB operative via messengers.

Sumy emergency teams and SES operational teams received 500 bulletproof vests from Lviv Defense Cluster. The Sumy Regional Military Administration reported that this delivery provided by philanthropists from Lviv has completely covered their needs. 

Chernihiv oblast

The ‘North’ Operational Command reported that the enemy shelled the Semenivka community with mortars. There were 12 shells in the area of Tymonovychi village, and 4 shells in the area of Yanzhulivka village.

Dismantling of buildings destroyed during active hostilities begins in Chernihiv. According to expert reports, three one-storey apartment buildings and two multi-storey buildings cannot be restored and must be dismantled.

Speaker of the Saeima of the Republic of Latvia Edvards Smiltens initiates ‘Light for Ukraine’ campaign after his visit to Chernihiv oblast. A shipment of energy-saving and lighting equipment arrived in Ukraine, including generators, various lamps, LED lamps, batteries, etc. According to the Chernihiv Regional Military Administration, a powerful generator will be transferred to the Bobrovytsia base hospital, and the rest of the aid will be distributed according to the needs of the oblast’s communities.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of the Regional Council, says that at night, the enemy attacked the Nikopol region again, the occupiers hit the Marhanets community. In the morning, the russian army shelled Nikopol with heavy artillery. An outbuilding was on fire. The shelling damaged a private enterprise, 4 residential buildings and two other outbuildings, and power lines.

Serhii Lysak, Head of the Dnipro Regional Military Administration, reports that in Chervonohryhorivka community, two people were killed by shelling from heavy artillery and MLRS. They are a 57-year-old woman and a 68-year-old man. 8 private houses, 2 outbuildings, a power line and a gas pipeline were damaged. A hotel in Nikopol was damaged. 

Vinnytsia oblast

The Ladyzhyn city territorial community informs that Ralf-Peter Olsner, Jens-Peter Laudien from Germany and Ivar Bostrom from Sweden, philanthropists who have been helping Ukraine since the beginning of the war came to the city. They provided assistance worth 2 million euros. 

Kirovohrad oblast

Blacksmiths Yurii and Oleh Hrebeniuk from Znamianka, Kropyvnytskyi region, Kirovohrad oblast, created a mobile installation from the fragments of ammunition they collected from different cities of Ukraine. The exhibition was dedicated to the russian-Ukrainian war that has been going on since 2014.

The Kropyvnytskyi utility company Teploenergetyk received a mobile modular boiler house from USAID equipped with a solid fuel boiler. The 1 mW KT-3E-N boiler is designed to supply heat to buildings and structures equipped with water heating systems with forced water circulation. The boiler house will be used in case of damage to heating networks or boiler equipment.

Poltava oblast

The Myrhorod City Council informs about a new project “Supporting the capacity of the social protection system to register internally displaced persons”. It will be implemented jointly with a charitable organization supported by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. The project aims to strengthen and provide advisory and methodological support to employees of the social protection system, providing counseling and information support to IDPs, facilitating the registration of IDPs, etc.

Cherkasy oblast

The National University of Cherkasy hosted a large-scale charity fair in support of the Ukrainian military. The charity event raised almost UAH 200 K.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

According to the Zaporizhzhia MRA, today, the Huliaipole community is under enemy fire again. In the morning, russian artillery killed two local residents. The occupier fired three missiles at Novomykolaivka. One of them destroyed an agricultural facility. Today the enemy shelled Stepnohirsk community with Grads. Residential buildings were damaged. There were no casualties. In Prymorske, the enemy hit a private house and the yard. The owner received minor injuries. russian missiles from the Ukrainian Crimea hit one of the communities in Zaporizhzhyi region. The shell hit the center of a small village.

The enemy сarried out 114 hits on the positions of Ukrainian defenders, using tank weapons, rocket and barrel artillery along the entire contact line.

According to the report of the National Security Service in Zaporizhzhia oblast, the occupiers shelled civilian infrastructure in  Malynivka, Novoandriivka, Novodanylivka, Huliaipole, Mali Shcherbaky, Zaliznychne, Bilohiria, Vesnianka, Olhivske, Mala Tokmachka, Charivne, Shcherbaky, Kamianske, and Stepove.

According to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, rescuers have unblocked the bodies of three more killed residents of the house destroyed by a russian missile on March 2. In total, rescuers unblocked 10 killed people from the rubble, including one child. During the debris removal, 11 people, four cats and a dog were rescued. 

The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant has been under occupation for a year now. russia not only controls the facility but also amends its legal documents. All this time, hostilities have been going on near the ZNPP, which creates incredible risks for nuclear and radiation safety of the plant and the region. 

The ZNPP became the first nuclear power plant in the world to be attacked by the enemy army and shelled with tanks. For a year, its employees have been subjected to enormous pressure, kidnappings and torture, but the vast majority of them have remained loyal to their country. Petro Kotin, President of Energoatom, thanked ZNPP employees for their courage in a video message. 

Energoatom published a movie on Youtube about the events at the Zaporizhzhya NPP after its occupation by russian troops. The authors of the film about the ZNPP’s seizure and the nuclear blackmail by the russian occupiers.

Mykolaiv oblast

Last night, russian troops shelled Ochakiv in Mykolaiv oblast, damaging the church of St. Agapitus of the Caves, located on the territory of the Borysfen health resort and owned by the UOC.

According to the Mykolaiv Regional State Administration, yesterday, with the support of the Kingdom of Denmark and the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), 311 generators were delivered to Mykolaiv oblast. Some of the generators were received by Mykolaivoblteploenergo and Mykolaivvodokanal, and the rest used for the needs of the region.

A presentation of a space for women called “Free” was held in Mykolaiv. This is a comfortable environment for women and girls, which includes a creative workshop, as well as an environment that creates conditions for personal development and support. This is the eighth space where women can freely use services such as group and individual sessions, thematic meetings, and trainings by psychologists and social work professionals over a cup of tea or coffee.

The NGO Association of ATO Participants and Disabled is implementing the project “My Dad Came Back from the War” as part of the Ukrainian Veterans Fund’s “Worth + GO” competition. It is planned to publish a book of comics for children and teenagers that will help them psychologically adapt to their fathers’ return from the front. The book will be based on veterans’ stories of their own experience of adapting to peaceful life. The age category is 10-15 years old. The comic book will be created by SPRING Comics publishing house.

Odesa oblast

According to the ‘South’ Operational Command, the risk of new russian missile and air strikes remains high. The number of russian missile launchers in the Black Sea has doubled: two surface and two submarines are currently on combat duty. The total volley can be 24 Kalibr missiles.

In Odesa, the documentary “The Battle for Mykolaiv” was presented, showing what kind of times the frontline city of Mykolaiv had to go through and how the city survived against all odds. The film contains many emotional shots from the first days of the full-scale russian offensive, the consequences of russian shelling, and personal stories of citizens, volunteers, and the military.

Kherson oblast

According to the Kherson regional police, russian occupiers launched a drone and dropped a grenade on a car of Ukrainian law enforcement officers in the liberated village of Antonivka, Kherson oblast. Four policemen were hospitalized with injuries and contusions.

According to the Kherson Regional Military Administration, russian invaders fired 69 times at the oblast yesterday. More than 460 shells were fired from mortars, MLRS, artillery, tanks and UAVs at peaceful settlements.

The enemy shelled Kherson four times. Apartment buildings and a utility company were damaged in the city. russian shelling killed 1 person and injured 10.

In Biliaivka village, a 43-year-old local resident exploded on a mine in his own yard. The man was taken to hospital with injuries.

According to Natalia Humenyuk, Head of the joint press center of the Defense and Security Forces of the South, the defense forces are keeping the situation on the left bank under control and preventing the russian army from shelling the whole Kherson oblast. The Ukrainian Armed Forces are not letting the enemy get close, so the russian military has started using drones. These are not only reconnaissance drones, but those capable of carrying and dropping ammunition, including HEUs as well. 

According to the British issue The Guardian, the lawyers, called the Mobile Justice Team, had investigated 20 torture chambers in Kherson and concluded they were part of a calculated plan to terrorise, subjugate and eliminate Ukrainian resistance and destroy Ukrainian identity.

According to the Kherson regional police, reports are coming from the temporarily occupied village of Novotroitsk that the russian military, with the support of local collaborators, is moving into the homes of local residents, conducting illegal searches and physical violence against people.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

In Lutsk, the official opening of the International poetry project of Halyna Yastrubetska “Polygon. The territory of the word”. The project presented poems written during the most acute phase of the war. Each poem is framed in a graphic poster accompanied by a digital code with an audio track.

Zakarpattia oblast

The RMA met with Marek Shafin, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Slovak Republic to Ukraine. The construction of new housing for IDPs in Zakarpattia oblast was discussed.

The RMA reported that the Vysochyna region allocated 6.5 million crowns in 2023 for the construction of a rehabilitation center for military personnel in Zakarpattia.

The RMA reported that Zakarpatia is strengthening support for IDP children and local children of socially vulnerable people with the assistance of UNICEF.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Fighters from Ivano-Frankivsk oblast received two hundred tactical first-aid kits, three hundred food kits, two charging stations, ten medical backpacks and ten walkie-talkies from the Razom for Ukraine CF. Also, a car, which will later be converted into a bath and laundry complex, was sent thanks to benefactors

The fourth communal shelter for IDPs opened in Kolomyia. The total cost of the works is UAH 7 million. The NGO Building Ukraine Together, the NGO STAN and the CF Ukrainian Educational Platform joined the project.

Lviv oblast

Andrii Sadovy, Mayor of Lviv, met with Bridget Brink,  US Ambassador to  discuss the situation in the city.

The volunteers of the Strii region received 35 boxes of humanitarian medical aid within the framework of the Wings of Help volunteer initiative from the Plastuns of Europe. It will be transferred to one of the Kyiv hospitals where soldiers are treated.

The Zhuravnivsk City Hospital received a 50 kW generator from the International Organization UNICEF. The equipment will allow the medical institution to help people in the usual way, even during a power outage.

Rivne oblast

The RMA reported that voluntary formations of the territorial community and the local population (around 200 people participate daily) actively participate in arranging defensive positions on the belarusian border.

The RMA reported that water utilities of the oblast received 5 generators with a capacity of 220 to 66 kW provided thanks to the German organization ERCC.

Ternopil oblast
