The operational situation in eastern and southern Ukraine remains difficult.
During the day of January 16, there were 85x combat engagements. The enemy launched a total of 2x missile and 13x air strikes, carried out 32x MLRS attacks at the positions of Ukrainian troops and various settlements. Unfortunately, the russian terrorist attacks have resulted in civilian injuries. Private residential and other civilian infrastructure were destroyed and damaged.
Volyn and Polissya axes: no significant changes. No signs of formation of an offensive group. Certain units of the armed forces of belarus continue their missions in the areas bordering Ukraine.
Sivershchyna and Slobozhanshchyna axes: the adversary maintains its military presence in the areas of russia bordering Ukraine. The enemy continues its sabotage and reconnaissance activities, shelling Ukrainian settlements from the territory of russia and increases the density of minefields along the state border of Ukraine. Around 20x settlements came under enemy artillery and mortar fire, including Hrem’yachka, Mykhal’chyna Sloboda (Chernihiv oblast), Sosnivka, Atyns’ke, Volfyne, Stepok (Sumy oblast), Udy, Vovchans’k, Okhrimivka, Zemlyanky (Kharkiv oblast).
Kup’yans’k axis: the adversary conducted no offensives. The invaders fired artillery and mortars at around 10x settlements, including Syn’kivka, Petropavlivka, Ivanivka, Berestove (Kharkiv oblast).
Lyman axis: the Ukrainian defenders repelled 9x assaults near Terny, Yampolivka, Tors’ke (Donetsk oblast), and 15x more attacks near Makiivka, Bilohorivka (Luhansk oblast), and north of Hryhorivka, Vesele (Donetsk oblast). Bakhmut axis: the Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled 6x attacks in the vicinities of Ivanivske, Andriivka and Klishchiivka (Donetsk oblast). More than 10x settlements came under artillery and mortar fire, including Ivanivske, Klishchiivka, Andriivka, New York (Donetsk oblast).
Avdiivka axis: the Ukrainian defenders repelled 15x enemy attacks near Novobakhmutivka, Stepove, Avdiivka, and 15x more attacks in the vicinities of Pervomais’ke and Nevel’s’ke (Donetsk oblast). In that area, the occupiers, with air support, made unsuccessful attempts to improve their tactical situation. The invaders fired artillery and mortars at around 15x settlements, including Keramik, Berdychi, Stepove, Lastochkyne, Nevel’s’ke (Donetsk oblast).
Mar’inka axis: the Ukrainian Defense Forces continue to hold back the invaders in the vicinities of Krasnohorivka, Heorhiivka, Mar’inka and Novomykhailivka (Donetsk oblast). In that area, the adversary, with air support, made 16x failed attempts to breach Ukrainian defense. The invaders launched an air strike near the settlement of Kostyantynivka (Donetsk oblast). The settlements of Krasnohorivka, Heorhiivka, Pobjeda, Novomykhailivka, Kostyantynivka, Katerynivka were under artillery and mortar fire of the occupiers.
Shakhtars’ke axis: the adversary conducted no offensives. The invaders launched an air strike in the vicinity of Vodyane (Donetsk oblast). The adversary fired artillery and mortars at more than 10x settlements, including Vodyane, Prechystivka, Blahodatne, Staromaiors’ke, Urozhaine (Donetsk oblast).
Zaporizhzhia axis: the Ukrainian defenders repelled 1x assault west of Verbove (Zaporizhzhia oblast). In that area the enemy made unsuccessful attempts to regain lost ground. Around 25x settlements, including Poltavka, Malynivka, Chervone, Bilohir’ya, Mala Tokmachka, Novodanylivka (Zaporizhzhia oblast), came under enemy artillery and mortar fire.
Odesa operational-strategic group, Kherson axis: the adversary fired artillery at the city of Kherson, the vicinities of Antonivka, Dniprovs’ke, Tyahynka (Kherson oblast).
The occupiers do not abandon their intention to drive Ukrainian units out of their footholds on the left bank of the Dnipro. Thus, during the day, the enemy made 6x unsuccessful assaults.
During the day of January 16, the Ukrainian Air Force launched air strikes on 1x concentration of troops, weapons and military equipment. Also, Ukrainian air defense troops shot down 1x Kh-59 air-launched guided missile.

The Cabinet of Ministers made changes to Resolution No. 76 of January 27, 2023, which regulates the reservation of conscripts during martial law, regarding the reservation of employees of enterprises of the defense-industrial complex (OPK). In this way, defense and military enterprises will be able to book employees without restrictions on the number and regardless of military rank, age and military accounting specialty. The relevant decision was adopted at the government meeting on January 16, 2024.
The government will additionally allocate almost 800 million hryvnias to the military. Specifically, UAH 792 million will be used to strengthen defense capabilities, to purchase ammunition, thermal imagers, and drones by military units. We are talking about additional funding for each brigade (in proportion to the personal income tax paid in December). This was announced by the Prime Minister of Ukraine, Denys Shmyhal.
Armor-piercing ammunition for FPV drones was developed in Ukraine. The warhead of the new EFP-S ammunition has a “shock core”, a powerful armor-piercing effect and a long range of remote damage. The weight of the element striking the target is 165 g, the speed of the striking meta element is 1800 m/s, the radius of effective defeat is 8 meters.
The Ministry of Defense has started cooperation with the State Employment Service. Now, vacancies posted by military units will appear on the Unified vacancy portal of the State Employment Service. At the next stage of cooperation, these vacancies will be offered to unemployed people in every region of Ukraine. First of all, this applies to non-combat specialties that will ensure full functioning and support in the rear. In the future, the selection and professional training of candidates for specialties will be carried out under the order of the Defense Forces.
Recent war events in the east of Ukraine
In the Kupyan direction, the Russian Federation did not conduct offensive operations during the day, the General Staff reported in the evening summary. At least 14 settlements in the Kharkiv region were hit by artillery and mortars.
An increase in the shelling of the border areas of the region is recorded, the enemy uses not only artillery, but also guided aerial bombs – hitting civilian objects, – said the head of the OVA Oleg Sinegubov. Mandatory evacuation was announced from Kindrashivska and Kurylivska communities of Kupyan district. According to his data, there are 3,043 people, 279 of whom are children, in the settlements where the evacuation was announced.
About 20 settlements of the Kharkiv region were hit by enemy artillery and mortar attacks, in particular: Guryiv Kozachok, Bogoduhiv District; Kozacha Lopan of Kharkiv district; Ohirtseve, Vovchansk, Bochkove, Okhrimivka of the Chuguyiv district; Dvorichna, Sinkivka, Petropavlivka, Ivanivka, Berestovka of the Kupyan district.
The enemy carried out airstrikes on the village. Vesele of Kharkiv district, village Berestov, Kupyan district.
The day before, around 15:30, the enemy fired anti-aircraft guns at the village. Fun in Kharkiv district. The school building was damaged, the club building was destroyed. No casualties.
At 9:50 p.m. and 11:00 p.m., the occupiers attacked the town of Vovchansk, Chuguyiv district, with anti-aircraft missiles. The administrative building of the telecommunications services company was damaged. There was no information about the victims.
The Armed Forces of Ukraine repelled 2 enemy attacks near Sinkivka, Kupyan district.
During the day in Kharkiv Oblast, assembled groups of explosive technicians demined 11.3 hectares of territory and destroyed 195 GNPs. Demining continues.
Pokrovsky district: in Krasnohorivka, Marinsk community, 1 person died and 1 was injured, 2 houses were damaged. There is 1 wounded person in Avdiivka. The Kurakhiv community was hit by three shellings – in the affected zone of the industrial zone and the outskirts of Kurakhovo.
Kramatorsk district: Nova Poltavka was shelled from Smerchy in the Illinivska community – 2 houses, a shop and a kindergarten were damaged. In the Kostyantynivska community, the neighborhoods of Mykolaivka, Diliivka and Predtechyny are under fire. In the Lyman community, a house was damaged in Torsky, under the attack of Yampil.
Bakhmut district: 3 people were injured, 6 high-rise buildings and 5 private houses were damaged in Toretska community in New York. 2 private houses were damaged in the Chasovoyarsk community. A high-rise building and a private house were damaged in Siversk.
Ukrainian soldiers repelled 85 Russian attacks in the Lymansky, Bakhmutsky, Avdiyivskyi and Marinsky directions during January 15, the General Staff reported. The Russian military carried out the most attacks in the Lyman and Avdiiv areas.
The Russian army attacked New York with four guided aerial bombs, the Donetsk police reported on January 15. As of 9:00 a.m. on January 16, the police clarified, the number of injured has not changed, and there is no data on the dead either – five people are believed to be under the rubble of the dilapidated three-story building. At the site of the destroyed entrance of the apartment building, the search and rescue operation was suspended due to massive shelling. Work will resume after the situation stabilizes.
As of January 16, four more people who died during Russian missile attacks on Pokrovsk and Rivne in Donetsk region on January 6 remain unidentified. They have already analyzed 104 body fragments out of 121 – suitable for identification, – said Oleksandra Gavrylko, head of the communication department of the Main Police Department in the Donetsk region.
In just one day, the Russians shelled populated areas of Donetsk region 23 times. 124 people, including 17 children, were evacuated from the front line.
Over the past day, the Russians killed 1 resident of Donetsk region – in Krasnohorivka. Another 5 people in the region were injured during the day, – reported the head of Donetsk OVA Vadym Filashkin.
In the last week and a half, the situation in Luhansk region has been very difficult – the Russians are pressing along the entire strip of our defense, with the aim of reaching the administrative border of the region, – said the head of the Luhansk OVA, Artem Lysogor. For three days now, the enemy has been storming Bilogorivka almost 24 hours a day, and a large number of guided air bombs are flying over the territory of Serebryan Forestry. The Russians hit Nevsky with 14 rockets the other day. The enemy does not care about the local population that remains there;
In Rubizhnye, the occupiers promised to help with the restoration of houses that were damaged by the fall of a Russian shell. However, people, as usual in the so-called “LNR”, were left alone with their problems.
The occupiers changed the vector of assault actions, moving it from Makiivka to Serebryansky lis and Bilogorivka. Yesterday, 19 Russian attacks were repelled in these cells. A significant part of the enemy’s offensives took place with the support of aviation. The enemy tried to push our defenders out of the forest area. In particular, a powerful assault attempt was organized on the position of the Volyn Territorial Defense Brigade. However, the Russians suffered a setback there – about 90 wounded and killed invaders, three destroyed tanks and a number of other equipment.
In addition, Novolyubivka was hit from the sky. Nevsky came under heavy mortar and artillery fire. People remain in both settlements.
On January 15, another assault on the positions of soldiers of the 100th Separate Territorial Defense Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Serebryan Forest in the Luhansk Region ended with heavy losses for the Russians. 27 occupiers were liquidated. Another 63 were injured. Three tanks, BMP-2, MT-LB were also destroyed, a 120 mm mortar and 3 dugouts were damaged.
Russian-style documents are required even from children, the Luhansk OVA reported. For example, in the children’s polyclinic in Lutugyny – both for children (birth certificate, and from the age of 14 – a passport) and for adults. Otherwise, they will not accept.
What is happening now in the north of Ukraine
Daiga Mierina, the Speaker of the Latvian Parliament, arrived in Kyiv on a visit. She met with Ruslan Stefanchuk, Head of the Verkhovna Rada. They discussed the development of the defence industry, strengthening of sanctions against russia, and Ukraine’s European and euro-Atlantic integration.
According to Kyiv RMA, in Kyiv oblast, 61 Administrative Service Centres provide administrative services to veterans. In 2023, the oblast’s ASCs provided about 7,000 services to veterans, their families and the families of the deceased. Effective social support for veterans is one of the main tasks of administrative service centres.
Traffic across the Hostomel Bridge has been partially restored in the Kyiv oblast. It is now possible to drive in one lane towards the capital. The construction of the bridge, damaged by russian military aggression, began in the summer of 2022.
The 134-metre bridge provides transport links between Kyiv and Bucha across the Irpin River.
The Kyiv Regional Centre for Mental Health is planning to set up a training and practical centre. The centre will develop an organisational model for the providing of psychosocial services in healthcare facilities. Its creation is a joint project of the oblast with the Israeli NGO IsraAID and the Community Revival Charity.
About 70 police officers from the Kyiv oblast donated blood for the needs of military and civilians wounded during the war. The donor day was organised by the Regional Police Department. The event was attended by law enforcement officers of the Kyiv and regional security police, as well as officers of the Titan security police unit.
According to Zhytomyr RMA, Zhytomyr oblast cooperates with UNICEF in a new format. It involves joint projects between the oblast’s communities and the UN Children’s Fund. At the end of last year, Korosten became the first community to sign a memorandum of participation in this stage of the project. To date, 5 more communities have joined it. In total, UAH 265 million is planned to be allocated to implement the goals of the memoranda.
According to the Zhytomyr City Council, a social dormitory for 7 IDP families will be built in Zhytomyr. The reconstruction work will be carried out with the financial support of the German government company Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.
Vitaliy Bunechko, Head of Zhytomyr RMA, another MITSUBISHI L200 SUV was delivered to a unit of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The vehicle was purchased thanks to volunteers from the Ukrainian Rescue Service NGO.
It is reported that the russians fired 23 times at Sumy oblast. There were 110 explosions. The Yunakivka, Krasnopillia, Bilopillia, Myropil, Velyka Pysarivka and Nova Sloboda communities were under enemy fire. The enemy fired mortars, MLRS, grenade launchers, used small arms and dropped explosives from UAVs.
According to the National Police, 2 residential buildings were damaged as a result of shelling by russian troops in the Nova Sloboda community on January 15.
According to Mykola Noha, mayor of Shostka, residents of the damaged buildings in Shostka should have their heating restored by Tuesday. Currently, the utility workers are helping residents with temporary window repairs. A tent has been set up in the yard where people can keep warm. The tent is also used to feed the residents and workers who are helping to overcome the consequences of the attack.
Volodymyr Artiukh, Head of the RMA, reported that since July 2023, the number of shelters in Sumy oblast has increased by 406 facilities (3 anti-radiation and 403 primary shelters). During this period, the capacity of the fund of protective structures increased by 95,000 people, which is almost 10% of the population of the oblast. As of today, there are 2010 shelters in the oblast (191 shelters, 817 anti-radiation shelters and 1002 primary shelters).
According to the National Police, training for current law enforcement officers who will be assigned to border schools has started in Sumy oblast. The aim of the project is to protect children in border schools, considering the dangers caused by the war.
According to the Chernihiv Border Guard Detachment, russian troops launched 5 attacks on 3 border communities in the oblast. Novhorod-Siverskyi community – 5 mortar attacks towards Hremiach village; Semenivka community – 7 mortar attacks towards Leonivka and Karpovychi villages; Snovsk community – 12 attacks from MLRS towards Kliusy village.
According to the police of Chernihiv oblast, police evacuated a 72-year-old woman from the village of Leonivka in the border community of Semenivka. Her home became completely uninhabitable as a result of russian shelling. The windows were smashed, the roof was damaged, and debris hit the walls.
In Chernihiv, the number of damaged houses and apartments has increased due to the fall of russian missile debris on January 13. In one of the private sectors, 28 detached houses, 20 apartments and 4 shops were damaged. International partners, including the Danish Refugee Council, People in Need, and ZOA, were involved in the restoration of the affected buildings.
Oleksandr Lomako, acting mayor of Chernihiv, reported that since January 15, a city council commission has been working in the Bobrovytsia neighbourhood to document the damage caused by the russian missile strike on January 13. The city council and the regional military administration have provided the victims with plastic sheeting, OSB boards to cover windows, and tarpaulin for roofs. People can also seek help from the social policy department of the city council.
According to the National Police, the Educational Security Officers project has been launched in Chernihiv oblast. In January, security officers will start working in 65 schools close to the war zone. A security specialist at the educational institution, together with the administration, will be responsible for the entire range of security measures.
Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine
At night the enemy shelled Nikopol with artillery three times. They hit Nikopol and Marhanets. The occupiers fired more than a dozen shells. There were no casualties or damage.
During the day the enemy used 3 kamikaze drones and shelled Nikopol with artillery once. 2 private houses, an outbuilding, a minibus, a garage, an unused building, fences and a power line were damaged in the town. There were no casualties.
Serhii Lysak, Head of the Regional Dnipropetrovsk Administration reported that 1,500 turnstiles were sent from Dnipropetrovsk region to the National Guard and police.
The City Council reported that Vinnytsia region sent another aid for border guards serving in the east of Ukraine – an UAV made in Ukraine. The border guard detachment has already received chemical heating pads and thermal imagers from the municipality. An UAV will help to reconnoiter the territory and detect the enemy in advance.
Andrii Raikovych, Head of the RMA reported that the Air Defence Force shot down a missile over Kirovohrad region. The debris damaged an agricultural warehouse and adjacent households in one of the communities. There were no casualties.
According to the RMA in Poltava region more than 300 employers received over UAH 10 million in compensation for hiring IDPs last year. They provided jobs for 809 people. By this indicator the region ranked sixth in Ukraine. Most IDPs were employed in wholesale and retail trade, vehicle repair, electricity and heat supply, agriculture and processing industries. They were also employed in the provision of administrative and social services and healthcare. As of January 1 this year, compensation for employment of IDPs was increased. It now amounts to UAH 7 100. From April 1, it is expected to increase to UAH 8000. The changes also affected the compensation duration from 2 to 3 months. The maximum compensation duration for expenses from the date of employment of IDPs with disabilities is 6 months.
A unit that protects the sky over the region was awarded in Cherkasy. The soldiers were presented with awards from the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valerii Zaluzhnyi. The awards were handed over by the head of the RMA, Ihor Taburets.
Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine
On January 15, the russian military conducted 162 strikes on cities and villages in Zaporizhzhia oblast. MLRS, artillery, and 31 drones were used. Zaporizhzhia, Huliaipole, Huliaipilsk, Malinivka, Novodarivka, Mala Tokmachka, Levadne, Poltavka, Luhivske, and Robotine came under fire.
Petro Kotin, the Acting Chairman of the Board of the National Atomic Energy Generating Company (NAEC) “Energoatom”, reported that the occupiers have caused damage to Zaporizhzhia NPP, which is currently under temporary occupation, amounting to approximately 30 billion UAH. The lack of profit for “Energoatom” is over 167 billion UAH.
The Mykolaiv RMA reported that on January 15, the settlement of Kutsurub community was under artillery fire. Although the administration withholds the name of the affected settlement, they confirm that there are no injuries. At 14:25, artillery shelling was observed in water area of Ochakiv community. There were no casualties recorded.
Southern Air Command reported that on January 15, Air Defense Forces in Southern region eliminated two russian reconnaissance “Merlin-VR” UAVs in Mykolaiv oblast.
A collaborative effort involving seven artists from the city of Yuzhnoukrainsk, the local museum, the art gallery “Gard,” and the charitable foundation “Volunteers of Buho-Gard” resulted in a charitable exhibition called “United for Victory” in Yuzhnoukrainsk. The exhibition featured 29 paintings, and art enthusiasts, as well as those supporting the Armed Forces of Ukraine, had the opportunity to purchase them. Among the contributing artists were both former and current employees of the Pivdennoukrainsk (or South-Ukraine) Nuclear Power Plant.
In commemoration of the Remembrance Day of Donetsk Airport Cyborgs, Olexander Yermolayev, a designer from Mykolaiv and the initiator of the MiniMisto project, created a LEGO model of the Donetsk Airport. The model accurately reproduces the entire building, not just the tower depicted on commemorative cards for the Remembrance Day,
but also serves as a reminder of the heroic defense of the airport by Ukrainian defenders from May 26, 2014, to January 22, 2015, and emphasizes the history of the airfield itself.
Hennadiy Suldin, the founder of the volunteer group “Technars,” informed that every day, machine gunners and man-portable air-defense systems (MPADS) operators in Odesa oblast are improving their skills on the “Chayka” air defense simulators to increase the likelihood of intercepting russian missiles and UAVs. Currently, three military units’ anti-aircraft gunners are undergoing training on the “Chayka” simulators at the “Technars” headquarters. Additionally, thanks to donations, volunteers are creating three more “Chayka” simulators for the Southern Air Defence.
The Odesa City Council reported that Gennadiy Trukhanov, Mayor of Odesa, met with Vladyslav Berkovsky, the head of the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation (UCF). Currently, after a break, the UCF is resuming its collaboration with regions. Since the full-scale invasion, Odesa’s infrastructure, in particular cultural heritage sites that require special attention, suffered significant damage. In the near future, a nationwide grant competition for cultural projects will be announced. The focus will be on projects aimed at recovery and support of artists’ activities.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that on January 16, russian forces on Kherson axis attacked Kherson, Antonivka, Dniprovske, and Tyahynka with artillery fire.
In Tyahynka, a man and a woman were injured and hospitalized with shrapnel wounds.
State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SES) reported that in the evening, russian forces shelled Dniprovske in Kherson oblast, hitting a residential building. russian military attacked rescuers who arrived to extinguish a fire. The fire was extinguished.
In Bilozerka, Kherson oblast, the residential building was attacked by russian military, wounding a 44-year-old man with explosive trauma and leg injuries.
The Southern Defense Forces reported that on January 15, russian military conducted two aerial strikes on the Kherson region, dropping 13 guided aerial bombs on Kherson, Beryslav, Zmiivka, Chervonyi Mayak, Respublikanets, and Novoberyslav.
Within a day on the left bank of Kherson oblast, the Defense Forces destroyed three MLRS “Uragan” and “Grad,” seven cannons, a mortar, two reconnaissance drones “Zala” and “Merlin,” two boats, and 13 units of russian automotive equipment. They also eliminated 22 russian military personnel.
Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of the Kherson RMA, reported that on January 15, the russian military shelled Kherson oblast 99 times. Humanitarian headquarters, a Points of Invincibility in Beryslavsky region, and the administrative building in Kherson were hit. Two people were injured.
Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine
The RMA reported that Volyn border guards received 6 cars, thermal imagers, charging stations, generators, a quadcopter, Starlink satellite communication systems, stoves and lamps.
Lutsk City Council sent 2 pickup trucks, namely, a Volkswagen Amarok and a Ford Ranger, to the unit 1141 of the National Guard of Ukraine.
The RMA reported that in Uzhhorod, training for heads of public and charitable organizations that provide various assistance to IDPs in the oblast has started.
Representatives of the RMA held a working meeting with representatives of the Hungarian community of the oblast in the premises of Berehove Branch of Matias Corvinus Collegium educational center. On the agenda is the issue of the functioning of communities of Berehiv region, in particular, regarding the implementation of state initiatives, the placement and integration of IDPs, activities of entrepreneurs, the sphere of health care, education, infrastructure, and others.
Ivano-Frankivsk community sent a Mavic and drones to the defenders of the marines.
In Ivano-Frankivsk, an annotation board to the fallen soldier Vasyl Matviyev was opened on the facade of the apartment building where he lived. Vasyl served in the 10th Mountain Assault Brigade Edelveis. He was killed on February 2, 2023 near Mykolaivka, Bakhmut region.
Lviv RMA and the Wings of Hope CF signed a Memorandum of Cooperation to do more for IDPs, wounded, families with seriously ill children and people who suffered from the armed aggression of the country. In addition, the RMA plans to cooperate with manufacturers of military first-aid kits, so that high-quality means of tactical medicine reach the front lines as soon as possible.
Residents of Chervonohrad region purchased a trencher worth UAH 118K to the 63rd separate battalion of the Territorial Defense Forces thanks to the private funds of employees of the city council and communal enterprises.
Lviv community sent 4 Rys robotic platforms and 2 pickup trucks worth UAH 4.2 mln to the front for the defenders.
Boryslav School #7 held a charity fair. It was attended by students, parents, teachers, members of Dzhur clubs and local benefactors. In total, participants collected almost UAH 83K to purchase drones for defenders.
