It has been the 668th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

The russian army continues to ignore the laws and customs of war, uses terror tactics, launches strikes, and shells both military and civilian targets. The enemy actively uses tactical aircraft and FPV quadcopters, conducts assault operations with the support of armoured vehicles. The russian forces increased the number of artillery shelling attacks, including those in the operational area of the Khortytsia operational-strategic group, exceeding 1 K each day.

On December 23, there were 57 combat engagements. The enemy launched 11 missile and 14 air strikes, launched 21 MLRS attacks at the positions of Ukrainian troops and various settlements. Unfortunately, the russian terrorist attacks have wounded civilians. Private residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure were destroyed and damaged.

The operational situation in the east and the south of Ukraine remains difficult.

Towards Volyn and Polissia, there are no significant changes. No signs of formation of an offensive group were noticed. Certain units of the armed forces of belarus continue their missions in the areas bordering Ukraine.

Towards Siversk and Sloboda, the russian army maintains its military presence in the areas of russia bordering Ukraine. The enemy continues its sabotage and reconnaissance activities, shelling Ukrainian settlements from the territory of russia and increases the density of minefields along the state border of Ukraine. The invaders launched air strikes in the vicinities of Leonivka and Chervonyi Khutir (Chernihiv oblast). More than 20 settlements came under enemy artillery and mortar fire, including Bleshnya, Leonivka (Chernihiv oblast), Oleksiivka, Stanychne, Sadky (Sumy oblast), Kozacha Lopan, Bilohivka, Velykyi Burluk, Izbytske, and Stroivka (Kharkiv oblast).

Towards Kupiansk, the Ukrainian defenders repelled 12 attacks in the vicinity of Synkivka (Kharkiv oblast). In that area, the enemy made attempts to break through the defences of Ukrainian troops. The invaders fired artillery and mortars at around 10 settlements, including Dvorichna, Synkivka, Petropavlivka, and Berestove (Kharkiv oblast).

Towards Lyman, the invaders conducted no offensives. They launched an airstrike in the area of Serebrianka forestry (Luhansk oblast). The enemy fired artillery and mortars at more than 10 settlements, including Nevske, Bilohorivka (Luhansk oblast), Torske, Serebrianka, Verkhnokamianske, Spirne, and Rozdolivka (Donetsk oblast).

Towards Bakhmut, the Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled 8 attacks of the adversary near Bohdanivka, Ivanivske, Klishchiivka and Andriivka (Donetsk oblast). Around 10 settlements came under artillery and mortar fire, including Vasyukivka, Bohdanivka, Klishchiivka, Andriivka, and Niu York (Donetsk oblast). 

Towards Avdiivka, the Ukrainian defenders repelled 19 enemy attacks east of Novobakhmutivka, Stepove, Avdiivka, and 12 more attacks in the vicinities of Sjeverne, Pervomaiske and Nevelske (Donetsk oblast). The occupiers fired artillery and mortars at around 10 settlements, including Novobakhmutivka, Berdychi, Avdiivka, Lastochkyne (Donetsk oblast).

Towards Marinka, the Ukrainian Defense Forces continue to hold back the enemy in the vicinities of Marinka and Novomykhailivka (Donetsk oblast). In that area, the enemy, using air support, launched 2 unsuccessful attacks on the positions of Ukrainian defenders. The settlements of Krasnohorivka, Heorhiivka, Pobieda, Kostyantynivka, were under artillery and mortar fire.

Towards Shakhtarske, the enemy conducted no offensives. The russian army fired artillery and mortars at around 10 settlements, including Vuhledar, Bohoyavlenka, Prechystivka, and Rivnopil (Donetsk oblast).

Towards Zaporizhzhia, the Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled all enemy attacks near Robotyne (Zaporizhzhia oblast). In that area, the enemy made failed attempts to dislodge Ukrainian troops from their positions. Around 20 settlements, including Poltavka, Huliaipole, Charivne, Mala Tokmachka, and Robotyne (Zaporizhzhia oblast), came under enemy artillery and mortar fire.

Towards Kherson, the russian army fired artillery at the cities of Kherson and Ochakiv (Mykolaiv oblast). 

The russian army did not abandon his intention to drive our units from the left bank of the Dnipro, made 15 failed assaults. The attacks were repelled and the enemy retreated having suffered major losses. The Ukrainian troops are holding the line, continuing to retain their positions and firing for effect on the enemy. 

The Ukrainian Air Force launched air strikes on 18 buildups of enemy troops, weapons, and military equipment, and 6 air defense systems of the adversary. Also, Ukrainian air defense forces destroyed 1 Kh-59 guided missile and 2 reconnaissance UAVs.

The Ukrainian rocket troops hit 5 buildups of enemy troops, weapons, and military equipment, 3 ammunition depots, 2 artillery systems and 1 command post.


Dmytro Lubinets, the Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights, four Ukrainian citizens were returned home from russia thanks to mutual humanitarian agreements.  

Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal reports that customs duties and VAT for military goods have been cancelled until 2025. This concerns drones, optical sights, night vision sights, monoculars, binoculars, portable radios, anti-drone guns, etc.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Ukrainian soldiers repelled 12 russian attacks near Synkivka of Kupiansk region. According to the report, more than 30 settlements in Kharkiv oblast were under attack.

Volodymyr Fito, Spokesman of the Ground Forces Command, reported that yesterday the russian army lost 51 pieces of equipment towards Kupiansk-Lyman, including five tanks and seven infantry fighting vehicles.

Oleh Syniehubov, Head of Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, informed that Kharkiv Regional Council has adopted a crucial Complex Programme of Support for Ukraine’s Defenders and their families for 2024-2028. The programme provides for the construction and reconstruction of rehabilitation facilities, the purchase of equipment, a number of financial incentives, such as, repayment of 3% and 6% interest rates on housing purchases, 50% of housing and utility bills, monthly financial assistance of UAH 8K to children of fallen soldiers, sanatorium and resort treatment, support for soldiers and their coaches in international competitions.

In October 2023, civilian instructors opened a branch of Kyiv-based Global Drone Academy in Kharkiv to train aerial reconnaissance. Serhii Hulchuk, a lecturer of the school, stated that the course is free for the military and consists of two lectures and three practical sessions. According to him, they work with simulators that copy the technical capabilities of drones.

Viacheslav Zadorenko, Head of Derhachi City Military Administration, said that russian troops launched artillery strikes on Kozacha Lopan. According to him, there were no injuries. The shelling damaged private buildings, civilian vehicles and critical infrastructure. The village is partially without electricity and gas supply. The shelling lasted for at least an hour.

More than 20 settlements in Kharkiv oblast were under enemy artillery and mortar attacks, including: Veterynarne of Kharkiv region, Vovchansk, Mala Vovcha, Budarky, Zemlianky of Chuhuiv region, Udy of Bohodukhiv region, Dvorichna, Synkivka, Petropavlivka, Ivanivka, Berestove, and Topoli of Kupiansk region.

Synkivka of Kupiansk region suffered several air strikes.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine repelled 16 enemy attacks near Synkivka, Kupiansk region.

At 12:27 am, the enemy attacked Kupiansk. Around 1 pm, the invaders shelled  Kindrashivka city, Kupiansk region. A private building was destroyed. There were no casualties.

At 3:20 pm, the enemy targeted Lyptsi village, Kharkiv region. 3 private buildings were damaged.

At 4:20 pm, the enemy shelled Velykyi Burluk village, Kupiansk district.

Pyrotechnics of the State Emergency Service examined more than 3.1 hectares of territory and 79 explosive ordnance. Mine clearance is ongoing.                              

Donetsk oblast

The General Staff stated that Ukrainian defence forces repelled more than 50 russian attacks towards Bakhmut, Avdiivka, Marinka and Shakhtarsk. Specifically, Ukrainian soldiers repelled 40 attacks towards Avdiivka, while the russian army did not advance towards Lyman.

Volodymyr Fito, Head of the public relations service of the Ground Forces Command, said that russian troops lost more than 100 pieces of equipment and more than 450 soldiers on 22 December towards Bakhmut and Lyman-Kupiansk.

Dmytro Lazutkin, Head of the public relations service of the 47th Brigade, informed that  Ukrainian troops control Stepove and a coke plant towards Avdiivka. Also the russian army is using various methods to advance, but they are not succeeding.

Vitalii Barabash, Head of Avdiivka City Military Administration, reported that three more women and one man were evacuated from Avdiivka. There are still 1206 people in the city.

Towards Volnovakha, russian invaders shelled the outskirts of Prechystivka of Vuhledar community.

Towards Donetsk, 1 person was killed in Katerynivka of Marinka community and 1 person injured in Antonivka. 3 people were injured in Novoselivka Persha of Ocheretyne community. In Kurakhove, 1 person was injured, 8 apartment buildings, private buildings and an industrial area damaged.

Towards Horlivka, 4 people were injured, 23 buildings, 4 infrastructure facilities and 3 administrative buildings damaged in Toretsk. An industrial building was damaged in Chasiv Yar community. A person was injured and 20 buildings damaged in Illinivsk community.

Towards Lysychansk, three streets in Serebrianka of Siversk community were shelled and a building in Torske of Lyman community damaged.

Ihor Moroz, Acting Head of Donetsk Regional Military Administration, confirmed that  yesterday russians killed 1 civilian in Katerynivka. Another 10 people were injured over the day. 

Luhansk oblast

Artem Lysohor, Head of Luhansk Regional Military Administration, reported that the number of attacks on the liberated villages and positions of our military remains consistently high. The invaders are mostly attacking with artillery, tanks and mortars during both artillery preparations and during attacks. Yesterday the enemy intensified fire towards Kupiansk, where they also used aviation. Towards Lyman, Nevske and Bilohorivka were under russian attack.

According to Luhansk Regional Military Administration, most of the enemy assault units are involved there. They are replenishing their reserves not only on the territory of the russian federation but also in the colonies of the so-called ‘luhansk people’s republic’, specifically, in Sukhodolsk.

When the recruitment methods stopped working, russians started forcing people to join Storm-Z units using physical pressure.

Almost 2.5 months have passed since the beginning of the heating season, and in Sievierodonetsk, only promises are heard. Only in recent weeks demonstration repairs have been carried out there and it looks like they will be completed with the December budget allocation.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

According to Kyiv RMA, 2 bridges that were damaged during the hostilities will be put into operation in Kyiv oblast by the end of the year. These are bridge structures on public roads of local importance on the Peremoha-Baryshivka and Korniivka-Nedra-Zhurivka-Berezan sections.

According to the Office of the Prosecutor General, the prosecutor’s office identified the russian commander of the OMON special rapid response unit. He gave illegal orders to his subordinates to imprison residents of Kyiv oblast and subject them to psychological and physical violence. This happened in March 2022, when the special unit was located in the village of Zdvyzhivka, Bucha district. 

Kyiv RMA reported that the first batch of 500 FPV drones was purchased by Kyiv oblast for the 72nd Brigade. A total of 1K of these UAVs will be purchased to help defenders in the East to destroy the russian invaders.

Ruslan Kravchenko, Head of Kyiv RMA, reported that one of the main problems in rebuilding Kyiv oblast is the lag in terms of time due to a shortage of workers. One of the reasons for this is the lack of skilled builders, as many of them have gone to the military to defend Ukraine. There are also cases of contractors saving money on labour. 

Schools in Bucha community received 150 tablets from the twin city of Bergisch Gladbach. Philanthropists from Germany donated the new tablets for 11th grade graduates. They will help children prepare for the national test more effectively. 

According to Kyiv City State Administration, another symbol of Bolshevik tyranny, the monument to the participants of the Kyiv Arsenal January Uprising was dismantled. The ideological role of this pedestal was to glorify the Bolsheviks, who staged an armed uprising against the Ukrainian Central Rada and the Ukrainian People’s Republic.

A pre-Christmas event was held in Kyiv to honour the Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred and the defenders of Ukraine. The Christmas Tree for Heroes event has been held in the capital for eight years in a row. It was held near the temporary memorial on the alley of the Heavenly Hundred Heroes.

Zhytomyr oblast

According to Zhytomyr City Council, in 2024, the city community expects to receive UAH 382 million of assistance from international organisations through the conclusion of grant agreements. The funds are planned to be used to purchase equipment for the water utility, modernise pre-school buildings, equip laboratories in vocational education institutions and build housing for internally displaced persons.

Zhytomyr RMA reported that  training was held in Zhytomyr for officers of the Regional Police Department. Its purpose was to strengthen the mental health and psychological resilience of police officers during the war.

Sumy oblast

Sumy RMA reported that the russian army shelled 6 communities in Sumy oblast. There were 112 explosions. Bilopillia, Krasnopillia, Myropillia, Esman, Seredyna-Buda, and Druzhbivka communities came under fire.

According to Sumy RMA, at night, the russian army shelled Krasnopillia community. There were 6 explosions.

According to the Ministry of Energy, in Sumy oblast, 54 settlements (3.1 thousand customers) are without power supply due to hostilities. In addition, above-ground gas pipelines were damaged by shelling in one of the oblast’s districts. 

Sumy RMA reported that schoolchildren from Okhtyrka, Sumy oblast, have bought FPV drones for the defenders of Ukraine. All the drones will be transferred to the Kholodnyi Yar 93rd separate mechanised brigade, which defended Okhtyrka. They are scheduled to be delivered to the position on December 28.

Chernihiv oblast

Liubov Plonsak, senior press officer of Chernihiv border guard detachment, reported that yesterday, russians shelled 5 border villages in Chernihiv oblast: Leonivka, Bleshnia, Kostobobriv, Karpovychi (Semenivka community) and Kliusy (Snovsk community). There were 75 explosions. They were probably caused by mortars, BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicles and unguided aerial missiles launched from a helicopter.

The Restoration project for veterans and their families has recently been launched in Chernihiv oblast. Its main goal is the adaptation and resocialization of veterans. Project activities and assistance are aimed at ensuring that veteran families do not feel left alone. The project is implemented in cooperation with Chernihiv Regional State Administration and the Caritas Chernihiv Charitable Foundation.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Council announced that in the afternoon the East Air Command shot down 2 enemy drones in Kryvyi Rih region. There were 13 attacks; the enemy once again hit Nikopol region. 9 kamikaze drones were used and about one and a half dozen artillery shells fired. They hit Nikopol, Pokrovsk and Marhanets communities.

A 49-year-old man was injured in one of Marhanets community villages. He was hospitalized in moderate condition. As a result of the attacks on the region, 2 enterprises, an administrative building, 4 trucks and a passenger car, a multi-storey building, 9 private houses, farm buildings, garages, power lines, a gas pipeline, a greenhouse and fences were damaged.

Vinnytsia oblast

According to Vinnytsia City Council, gifts were sent from Vinnytsia to Donetsk oblast  to the youngest Ukrainians. As part of the action, Vinnytsia residents prepared more than 150 New Year’s packages for the children of Sloviansk, sending toys, stationery, clothes, sweets and books.

Vinnytsia residents joined the blood donation action, which took place as part of the Bloom from DonorUA campaign. A total of 48 donors took part in the campaign. The blood collection was carried out by the Vinnytsia blood service center team in one of the city’s shopping centers. It will meet the needs of military and civilian patients.

Kirovohrad oblast

Andrii Raikovych, Head of RMA, says that air targets were destroyed over Kropyvnytskyi and Oleksandriia regions. Roofs, fences and cars were damaged by debris.

Poltava oblast

Filip Pronin, Head of the RMA, says that as a part of the national project, Poltava oblast is helping to restore the houses in Pravdyne and Chkalove, Kherson oblast. In total 160 households have been rebuilt since the beginning of the works. About 400 people are living in renovated houses.

Cherkasy oblast

Fragments of Shahed drones, russian missiles and military ammunition were collected in Kremenchuk. An exhibition dedicated to the full-scale russian invasion of Ukraine was opened at the Military History Museum in Kremenchuk.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Zaporizhzhia RMA reported that on December 22, the russian forces conducted 130 strikes in cities and villages of Zaporizhzhia oblast. Among these, 101 strikes were launched using artillery, targeting Huliaipole, Zaliznychne, Huliaipilse, Novodanylivka, Chervone, Levadne, Poltavka, Mali Shcherbaky, and Plavni.

Mykolaiv oblast

Mykolaiv RMA reported that on December 22, the russian forces conducted two shelling attacks on Ochakiv community and the city of Ochakiv in Mykolaiv oblast. There were no reported casualties or injuries.

Odesa oblast

Odesa RMA reported that on the evening of December 22, the Air Defense Forces successfully shot down all seven drones that were launched over the region. As a result of the attack, a blast wave damaged a school in Odesa region. Nearly four thousand families experienced power blackouts due to damaged power lines.

Additionally, Odesa City Council announced the procurement and delivery of 61 boats to the military. The total cost of the equipment reached UAH 44.5 million. The boats were provided in three variations: 52 aluminium boats equipped with a two-stroke engine, four cargo boats made of pressed plastic, and five inflatable high-speed boats fitted with a turret suitable for mounting a machine gun. All watercraft possess resistance to overturning and have technical specifications enabling them to remain afloat even if punctured. The boats come with carriages for their transportation.

Kherson oblast

Kherson RMA reported that on December 22, the russian forces launched an attack on Stanislav in Kherson oblast using UAV, resulting in the death of a 69-year-old man.

Overnight shelling by russian forces caused damage to the catenary system of the electric public transport in Kherson. Personnel of Khersonelektrotrans were engaged in repairing the damaged catenary throughout the day.

The Southern Defense Forces informed that on December 22, the russian forces carried out an airstrike using four guided aerial bombs in Krynky of Kherson oblast. Kherson experienced ten attacks employing various types of weaponry. Additionally, Zymivnyk, Antonivka, Ivanivka, Mykhailivka, Lvove, and Tiahynka were shelled.

Volunteers from the Volunteer Union PORUCH from Kyiv conducted a humanitarian mission in Kherson, distributing 1400 gifts for children and delivering heaters, generators, and charging stations to 12 community bomb shelters.

In Kherson, representatives from the TrO Media agency and military personnel introduced a photo exhibition titled “Through the Length of War”. The exhibition showcases 125 works displaying photographic evidence of  crimes of russian forces, the faces of Ukrainian defenders fighting for Ukraine on various fronts, and the operations of combat units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

Lutsk City Council has prepared another batch of aid for servicemen of military unit A 4848, namely: a 2.4 kW SIGMA chainsaw (6 pcs.), a hydraulic bottle-shaped jack 5 t H185-355 mm (6 pcs.), Bluetti AS 500+ charging station B 300S Home Battery Backup 3072 Wh, charging station Bluetti PowerOak EB 55 537 Wh 700 W 150000 mAh (3 pcs.), socket wrenches 25 pcs. 6-32 mm CrV satin (3 pcs.), a set of sockets and bits 1/ 4.1/2 94 pcs CrV SIGMA (7 pcs), Starlink satellite communication terminal kit with conversion (8 pcs). A total of 34 items of material values ​​worth more than UAH 742K. Also, for the needs of this unit, 3 quadcopters Mavik 3 Thermal worth UAH 582K were handed over.

Zakarpattia oblast

Investors from 43 countries are working in Zakarpattia within the framework of the Program of Social and Economic Development of Zakarpattia oblast for 2024. It has been approved by the deputies of Zakarpattia Regional Council and will involve investments of $544.3 mln   from the European Union.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Representatives of Ivano-Frankivsk City Council went to the soldiers of the 50th Regiment of the National Guard named after Semena Vysochan and handed them over sledgehammers, equipment, chainsaws, crowbars, shovels, self-tapping screws and other things needed for the construction of fortifications. In addition, the defenders were awarded with For Honour and Valour awards and watches, as well as certificates of appreciation.

Lviv oblast

At the Christmas family fair in Brody, over UAH 25K was collected to buy components for FPV drones. The event was held on the initiative of the Era Cultural and Art Center with the participation of over 20 teams and 15 craft producers.

Kamianka-Buzka City Council sent 7  multi-channel fast charging units for the needs of the military. 7 more spotlights will be sent in the near future.

Novoiavoriv City Council sent 6 quadcopters for a total of over UAH 1.2 mln to the territorial defense soldiers from Yavoriv region.

The RMA reported that residents of Nemirov sent 50 kg of home-made goodies to fellow soldiers at the front.

Rivne oblast

Rivne City Council reported that the city will additionally allocate over UAH 12 mln to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine. An additional UAH 10 mln will be used for the purchase of drones, another UAH 2 million to buy the equipment and ammunition in the form of a subvention for one of the military units.

Ternopil oblast

Volunteers of the Army Aid from Ternopil center went to the defenders. This time, about 80 packages are going to the soldiers from their relatives. In addition, children handed over their drawings to the defenders. Ternopil City Council sent a bus, generators, Starlinks, quadcopters, FPV drones, clothes, shoes, hygiene products, and food.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

At night, during the air alarm signal, 2 enemy UAVs of the Shahed type were destroyed in Khmelnytskyi oblast. No injuries or destruction are reported.

Khmelnytskyi sent 6 Kvertus anti-drone gunsl worth about UAH 3 mln to one of the units of the Defense Forces thanks to the city budget funds.

Chernivtsi oblast

Putyl Lyceum named after Yurii Fedkovych is completing the repair of the anti-radiation shelter. So far, builders have repaired part of the basement floor of the educational institution, with an area of ​​245.9 square meters. A ventilation system and an automatic entrance will be installed.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Germany sent Ukraine a new aid package, namely 3 Gepard anti-aircraft guns, 30 240 units of 35-mm ammunition for Gepard, ammunition for Leopard 2A6, 10 Vector UAVs, 2 HX81 tractors, 5 HX81 semi-trailers, 8 Zetros trucks, 2 demining machines WiSENT 1 MC, 2 border guard vehicles, 8 vehicles, 2 AMPS communication protection systems for helicopters, 2,5K 155 mm shells, and 25 536 40-mm shells for automatic grenade launchers.

The European Union will send 500 additional power generators total worth EUR 16,5 mln to strengthen Ukraine’s energy sustainability. These generators range from a small 12.5 kVA to a large 1000 kVA and are capable of powering entire hospitals in the event of a power outage.

Felix Baumann, Ambassador of Switzerland to Ukraine, says that the country, known for its position of neutrality regarding any military conflicts, supports the Ukrainian Peace Formula and is ready to provide mediator services.

Foreign banks will be able to disconnect from the US financial system for violating sanctions against the russian federation. According to the decree signed by President Joe Biden on December 22, the American authorities can prohibit banks from opening accounts in the United States, as well as freeze their assets, if payments related to sanctioned individuals, companies or the russian military and defense complex pass through their institutions.

The Baltic countries agreed on a unified regional application of EU sanctions against the russian federation. Three countries intend to provide a single customs inspection and exchange of information. The relevant institutions of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia plan to apply the regional approach no later than January 31, 2024.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, met with Radoslaw Sikorski, recently appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland. They discussed further cooperation in the defense sphere, the issue of creating joint production facilities.

The Ministry of Community Development, Territories and Infrastructure of Ukraine reported that Ukraine and Poland agreed on actions to unblock the border.

Estonia is ready to conclude an agreement with Ukraine that will allow the mobilization of men who are abroad. According to Lauri Laenemets, Estonian Foreign Minister, about 7,5K Ukrainians of military age live in Estonia, but it is important to understand that many of them are exempt from mobilization. “Estonia will not stand aside. We are happy to conclude such an agreement and help Ukraine. We have an idea of ​​where these people live in Estonia. We are ready to help deliver these people from Estonia to Ukraine if they need it,” he added.
