It has been the 654th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

The russian federation continues to wage a war of aggression. Despite significant losses, it does not abandon its plans for the complete occupation of Ukraine. The enemy continues to ignore the laws and customs of war, uses terror tactics, conducts strikes, and shells both military and civilian targets.

The operational situation in eastern and southern Ukraine remains difficult.

On December 9, there were 45 combat clashes.

The enemy launched a total of 1 missile strikes, 5 air strikes, 25 MLRS attacks at the positions of Ukrainian troops and various settlements. russian occupiers launched another attack on Ukraine, using 1 Kh-59 guided missiles, which was successfully destroyed by Ukrainian air defense forces. Unfortunately, russian terrorist attacks have resulted in civilian casualties and injuries. Private residential buildings as well as other civilian infrastructure were destroyed and damaged.

Towards Volyn and Polissia, no significant changes. No signs of formation of an offensive group. Certain units of the armed forces of belarus continue their missions in the areas bordering Ukraine.

Towards Siversk and Sloboda, the enemy maintains its military presence in the areas of russia bordering Ukraine. The enemy continues its sabotage and reconnaissance activities, shelling Ukrainian settlements from the territory of russia and increases the density of minefields along the state border of Ukraine. Around 25 settlements came under enemy artillery and mortar fire, including Plokhiv, Klyusy, Baranivka, Rozhkovychi, Fotovyzh, Starykove, Volfyne (Sumy oblast), Ternova, Starytsia, and Bochkove (Kharkiv oblast).

Towards Kupiansk, Ukrainian defenders repelled 4 enemy attacks in the vicinities of Synkivka (Kharkiv oblast) and Novoselivske (Luhansk oblast). The invaders fired artillery and mortars at around 10 settlements, including Dvorichna, Synkivka, Petropavlivka, Ivanivka, Kupians’k (Kharkiv oblast).

Towards Lyman, the russian army conducted no offensives. The occupiers fired artillery and mortars at around 10x settlements, including Nevske, Bilohorivka (Luhansk oblast), Torske, Verkhnokamianske, Spirne, and Rozdolivka (Donetsk oblast).

Towards Bakhmut, Ukrainian defenders repelled 12 attacks near Bohdanivka, Ivanivske, and Klishchiivka (Donetsk oblast). Around 10 settlements, including Vasiukivka, Orikhovo-Vasylivka, Bohdanivka, Klishchiivka, Andriivka, and Niu York (Donetsk oblast), came under artillery and mortar fire.

Towards Avdiivka, Ukrainian defenders repelled 11 attacks in the area east of Novobakhmutivka, Avdiivka, Tonenke, Pervomaiske (Donetsk oblast), where the enemy, with air support, was making unsuccessful attempts to breach Ukrainian defences. The enemy fired artillery and mortars at around 15 settlements, including Novobakhmutivka, Stepove, Avdiivka, Sjeverne, Tonenke, and Pervomaiske (Donetsk oblast).

Towards Marinka, Ukrainian defense forces continue to hold back the enemy in the vicinities of Marinka, Pobjeda and Novomykhailivka (Donetsk oblast), where the enemy launched 8x failed attacks on positions of Ukrainian defenders. The settlements of Marinka, Pobjeda, Novomykhailivka, and Paraskoviivka (Donetsk oblast) were under artillery and mortar fire.

Towards Shakhtarske, Ukrainian defense forces repelled 2 assaults of the enemy attempting to force Ukrainian units out of their positions in the vicinity of Staromaiorske (Donetsk oblast). The invaders launched an airstrike in the vicinity of Prechystivka (Donetsk oblast). Around 10 settlements, including Vodyane, Vuhledar, Prechystivka, Zolota Nyva, and Urozhaine (Donetsk oblast), came under artillery and mortar fire.

Towards Zaporizhzhia, Ukrainian defense forces repelled 3 enemy attacks near Novopokrovka and west of Robotyne (Zaporizhzhia oblast). More than 20 settlements, including Levadne, Novodanylivka, Novopavlivka, Lobkove, Stepove (Zaporizhzhia oblast), and Nikopol (Dnipropetrovsk oblast) came under artillery and mortar fire.

Towards Kherson, the enemy fired artillery at the settlement of Beryslav, Tyahynka, Ivanivka (Kherson oblast), and the city of Kherson.

Ukrainian Defense Forces continue to hold their ground on the left bank of the Dnipro River (Kherson oblast) and inflict fire on the enemy.

Ukrainian rocket troops hit 2 enemy fuel and lubricant depots of the occupiers.


President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy announces that 40 Ukrainian citizens were evacuated from the Gaza Strip. It is known that as of December 1, 146 citizens have expressed a desire to evacuate from the Gaza Strip. 

The Prosecutor General’s Office reports that Ukraine is investigating more than 3,000 Russian war crimes against children. Child-friendly justice standards designed to protect children’s rights and interests are currently being implemented in the country.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Defence Forces repelled four russian attacks near Synkivka, Kharkiv oblast, and Novoselivske, Luhansk oblast, towards Kupiansk. At least 13 settlements in the region were shelled with artillery and mortars.

Two women aged 67 and 71 were killed as a result of hostile shelling of Kupiansk. A 33-year-old man was injured. The invaders attacked with artillery around 3:30 pm. A private building, a garage, a fence and a summer kitchen were damaged. Law enforcers are working at the scene of the crime against civilians.

Kharkiv police reported that russian troops shelled Podoly, Kupiansk region. A 51-year-old woman was injured and hospitalised. Today at 12:10 am, russia attacked, preliminarily, with the Uragan MRLs.

Viktor Kovalenko, Head of Zolochiv Village Military Administration. stated that the Alley of Heroes of Zolochiv region was opened on 8 December. Its stands depict 44 defenders from the community who have fallen at the front since 2014.

Oleh Syniehubov, Head of Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, said that a total of 65 modular shelters will be installed in Bohodukhiv, Izium, Kupiansk and Kharkiv regions and 11 have already been installed.

Three shelters are being installed in the de-occupied Balakliia, where locals will be able to hide from shelling. Each shelter is designed for 40 people.

Over 17 settlements in Kharkiv oblast suffered artillery and mortar attacks over the day: Huriv Kozachok of Bohodukhiv region, Vetarynarne, Hraniv of Kharkiv region, Synkivka, Petropavlivka, Ivanivka, Berestove of Kupiansk region and others.

The enemy launched airstrikes on Ivanivka, Synkivka, Pishchane and Podoly of Kupiansk region.

In Tsaredarivka village, Lozova region, a shop was on fire and a private building damaged as a result of a UAV strike. There were no casualties.

A residential building and a critical infrastructure facility were damaged as a result of shelling in Monachynivka village, Kupiansk region, at 8:40 am. 37 consumers were disconnected from the gas supply, reconnection works are ongoing.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine repelled 11 enemy attacks near Synkivka, north-east of Petropavlivka and Ivanivka.

Pyrotechnics of the State Emergency Service examined more than 5.4 hectares of territory and defused 48 explosive ordnance. Mine clearance is ongoing.

Donetsk oblast

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that the invaders stormed Ukrainian positions in eastern Ukraine more than 80 times yesterday, 35 of them towards Avdiivka.

Oleksandr Stupun, Spokesman of Tavriisk direction, said that the russian army is using rocket artillery to “cover” frontline roads and towns to complicate the logistics of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Avdiivka and Marinka directions remain the most active.

Vitalii Barabash, Head of Avdiivka City Military Administration, informed that twelve people, who were hiding in the shelter of the Avdiivka Coke Plant, have been evacuated to a safer area. Currently, psychologists are working with the evacuees, including 9 men and 3 women. Barabash also said that police, volunteers and Avdiivka Coke employees took part in the evacuation.

There are two men living in Dolyna, a village on the border of Donetsk and Kharkiv oblasts that was never stormed by the invaders, and they are the only people in the destroyed and devastated village. According to Serhii Zemelnyi, Starosta of Dolyna community, about 5% of the village’s territory has been cleared of mines. Before the full-scale invasion, about five hundred people lived there. Now there is almost nowhere to live as not a single building has survived. 160 households have been destroyed.

The night in Donetsk oblast was relatively calm, with no casualties reported.

Towards Donetsk, Krasnohorivka, Novomykhailivka and Kostiantynivka of Marinka community were shelled. The enemy shelled the industrial area of Kurakhove community 5 times.

Towards Horlivka, 7 private buildings, 4 apartment buildings and a kindergarten were damaged in Toretsk. 3 apartment buildings and 2 private buildings were damaged in Chasiv Yar community.

Towards Lysychansk, a building and an infrastructure facility were damaged in Siversk. Lyman community was shelled 22 times.

Ihor Moroz, Acting Head of Donetsk Regional Military Administration, confirmed that yesterday it became known about one more person who was killed as a result of a strike on Novohrodivka on November 29.

Luhansk oblast

According to Luhansk Regional Military Administration, it is dangerous in the liberated settlements but people are holding on to their homes to the last. The main thing is that they are gradually agreeing to evacuate from villages located near the front line. A couple, a 69-year-old man and a 64-year-old woman, left Hrekivka. They will stay with relatives in Dnipropetrovsk oblast for the time being. If necessary, Krasnorichensk Military Administration is ready to help with any issues that may arise.

Nadiia, Nevske and the territory of Serebrianka forestry were under enemy airstrikes. The invaders shelled Nevske and Bilohorivka with artillery and mortars.

Artem Lysohor, Head of Luhansk Regional Military Administration, said that the presidential elections are to take place in March and will last for three days. The so-called ‘luhansk people’s republic’ has allowed door-to-door voting throughout the entire period of the election. Not people but houses will vote. Because only members of the election commission will confirm whether there is a person in the apartment or house.

Starting in the new year, russian invaders will stop providing medical services to people without a russian passport and will ban them from driving their own cars. Restrictions in hospitals and pharmacies have already been introduced in Starobilsk region.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

Ruslan Kravchenko, Head of the Kyiv RMA, reported that over 15.3 K facilities damaged by the russians have already been restored in Kyiv oblast. This is more than half of the damaged objects. As a result of the full-scale invasion of the russian military, more than 28,000 objects were destroyed and damaged. Almost 14 thousand of the restored objects are houses.

According to Kyiv RMA, this week, the second offsite meeting of the Transparency and Accountability working group was held in Boryspil region. Almost 300 tender procurements announced by communities were analysed. Such offsite meetings of the group will be held in all regions.

A national military memorial cemetery will be built in Fastiv region in Hatne community. Serhii Derbin, chief architect, presented sketches of the future cemetery. A land plot of more than 260 hectares will include a ceremonial square, a house of mourning, a crematorium, a museum and exhibition complex, and other necessary infrastructure.

According to Kyiv City State Administration, a monument to bolshevik commander Shchors was dismantled as part of the decommunisation process. It will now be kept at the Antonov State Aviation Museum of Ukraine.

Zhytomyr oblast

Vitalii Bunechko, Head of Zhytomyr RMA, says that more than a hundred athletes from Zhytomyr Oblast joined the army to defend the country, ten of whom were killed in the battles for Ukraine’s independence. 

In Zhytomyr, Colonel Anton Kviatkovskyi, head of the 9th Sich Riflemen border guard detachment presented state awards to the families of fallen border guards.

Zhytomyr RMA reported that on December 8, the opening ceremony of the Caritas-Spes Ukraine rehabilitation centre for people with disabilities was held in the village of Zarichany. The centre is aimed at creating conditions that allow children and adults to not only receive rehabilitation services, but also to combine them with family recreation.

Sumy oblast

According to the Sumy RMA, russian soldiers shelled Krasnopillia community. There were two mortar attacks.

It is reported that russians fired 6 times at the border areas and settlements of Sumy oblast. There were 19 attacks. Four communities in the oblast were shelled: Yunakivka – an explosive device dropped from a UAV (2 explosions) and artillery shelling (7 explosions), Krasnopillia – artillery shelling (4 explosions), and Bilopillia – one artillery strike. The enemy also dropped 5 mines on the territory of Seredyna-Buda community.

The State Border Guard Service reported that in Sumy oblast, border guards neutralised a russian army kamikaze drone. The military, who were on duty at one of the state border areas, noticed an enemy FPV drone approaching. They used an anti-drone rifle, causing the kamikaze drone to lose altitude, fall to the ground and explode.

According to Sumy RMA, medical institutions of the oblast received a humanitarian aid shipment from benefactors with orthopaedic treatment and rehabilitation equipment, maternity supplies and consumables for emergency medical services. The medical supplies will be distributed among the medical institutions of the oblast to provide relevant assistance.

Chernihiv oblast

As part of the government’s Army of Recovery programme, the oblast’s Employment Service is engaging the unemployed to work for the Victory. More than 8,000 referrals for such work have been issued this year. The programme participants equip civil defence shelters, build fortifications, clear rubble and carry out repair and restoration work.

The right-hand lane of the bridge over the Desna River on the Chernihiv bypass road has been completed. In March 2022, the russians dropped at least six bombs on the bridge. This is one of the largest bridges in Chernihiv oblast, with a length of almost 600 metres and a four-lane capacity.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Council announces that at night the enemy shelled Nikopol with artillery. In the evening anti-aircraft defense was on alert against an enemy missile worked in Kryvyi Rih region. Two kamikaze drones attacked Nikopol. As a result of the attacks, a private enterprise, an infrastructure object and a high-rise building were damaged.

Dnipropetrovsk oblast has been subjected to more than 2,500 russian army shelling attacks since the beginning of the full-scale war. 260 civilians were killed, including 20 children. More than 6 K objects were damaged.

Vinnytsia oblast

Serhii Morhunov, Vinnytsia Mayor, reports that 124 residents of Vinnytsia and the oblast managed to return home during the year due to the activities of the Coordination Headquarters of the Central Region on war prisoners treatment.

Volunteers from Tomashpol in Vinnytsia region sent more than two hundred camouflage nets to defenders during the year. Each of the women involved has relatives currently fighting on the frontline. 

Poltava oblast

In the Assumption Cathedral in Poltava paid tribute to 43-year-old Oleksandr Katrychko from Dykanka village. He was in the Armed Forces since the beginning of 2014, serving in the ATO zone in Donetsk region. On November 28, he was wounded, after which he was treated in Dnipropetrovsk regional hospital named after Mechnykov. He died on December 3, 2023 without regaining consciousness.

Cherkasy oblast

During the charity concert in Kaniv, the organizers managed to collect over UAH 24 K for the military coming from the city.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

According to Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, on December 8, there were 64 enemy attacks in Zaporizhzhya oblast. Huliaipole, Robotyne, Mala Tokmachka and Stepove were  attacked with drones. Stepnohirsk came under MLRS fire. There were 59 artillery strikes several frontline towns and villages, including Huliaipole, Zaliznychne, Novodarivka, Levadne, Lukianivske, Bilohiria, Poltavka, Kamianske, Pyatikhatky and Lobkove. A 56-year-old resident of Stepnohirsk was killed. 

The General Staff of Ukrainian Armed Forces reported that towards Zaporizhzhya, the Ukrainian Defence Forces repelled all russian army attacks west of Verbove. 

Mykolaiv oblast

According to Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, on  December 8, and in the morning of December 9, russian troops shelled the city of Mykolaiv and Mykolaiv region. The shelling took place in open areas on the outskirts of the city. There were no casualties.

The press service of the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy reported that about 26 K copies of publications were transported from the Oles Honchar Library in Kherson to Mykolaiv. The ICIP is organising measures to move the library collections of the Oles Honchar Kherson Regional Universal Scientific Library, which was damaged by russian shelling.

Odesa oblast

Ukrainian sea ports authorities reported that six Volvo diesel generators with a capacity of 550 kVA, based on Iveco vehicles, were delivered to the Black Sea branch of the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority in Odesa oblast. The generators were received under an agreement between the governments of Ukraine and Japan on technical cooperation and grant assistance as part of an emergency rehabilitation and reconstruction project implemented through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Mykhailo Zhyrokhov, military expert, said that the Patriot anti-aircraft missile system is already operating in Odesa oblast. Experts also note the formation of additional mobile groups to fight enemy drones. There is evidence that an additional number of Cheetahs are being deployed. 

Kherson oblast

Kherson Regional Military Administration said that around 12.00, russian troops shelled Kherson, injuring two local residents. 

The russian military dropped explosives on Beryslav from a drone. One person was killed and another injured.

Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of Kherson Regional Military Administration, reported that on  December 8, the russian army fired 62 times at Kherson oblast. They hit residential areas and a building of a critical infrastructure facility in Kherson. One person was injured.

On December 8, Kherson, Prydniprovske, Sadove and Antonivka suffered from shelling. The russian army fired 21 times, using 81 shells.

The Ministry of Energy said that in Kherson, 1,323 citizens remain without electricity supply after the evening shelling on  December 8. As of the morning of December 9, 396 consumers were reconnected. 

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

Lutsk City Council sent DJI MAVIC 3T and DJI MAVIC 3 quadcopters to military unit 0281 and the 95th separate mountain assault brigade. The equipment was purchased with budget funds.

Zakarpattia oblast

Bohdan Mahalias, a combat medic of the 128th Zakarpattia Brigade, was awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine for his heroism and self-sacrifice during the hostilities. Under fierce fire from the enemy, he evacuated wounded servicemen, despite his personal danger. In December 2022, he suffered a concussion and was slightly wounded, but continued to perform the task.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

During the year, Kalush Central Library collected russian literature and literature in the russian language for waste paper. The received UAH 2K was donated to the needs of the Armed Forces.

Lviv oblast

On December 7-8, the 3rd National Congress “Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine in Ukraine in Conditions of a Large-Scale War”  was held in Lviv. Representatives of the World Health Organization, the European Union of Medical Specialists, the European Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine, Ukrainian medics, heads of medical educational institutions, and health departments took part in the congress. The event gathered over 900 participants.

The RMA held a meeting with members of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs/OCHA Ukraine. They are partners of the Coordinating Center for the Support of the Civilian Population at Lviv RMA. Over 300K people in Lviv Oblast received humanitarian aid from international partners during the year.

Residents of Hirnyk collected over UAH 15 K for the purchase of a drone for the military of the 115th brigade. Also, students of Hirnyk Gymnasium made 70 trench candles. Starosambir community purchased an anti-drone gun for the Karpatska Sich battalion.

International donors have created 35 additional places for IDPs in Lviv oblast. They were arranged in an inactive kindergarten in the village of Verkhniy Dorozhiv, Medenytsia community.

Yurii Liang, soldier from Strii region, was posthumously awarded the For Military Service medal. The defender was killed on September 30, 2022 near Opytne in Donetsk oblast.

Eleven teams of high school students from Strii community took part in a military sports competition. They demonstrated their skills in shooting from an air rifle, throwing grenades, assembling and disassembling a machine gun.

Rivne oblast

RMA representatives inspected one of the air defense units in Rivne oblast. Serhii Podolin, acting head of the RMA says that the equipment is in combat readiness and on permanent duty. They discussed with the military additional needs that will strengthen the defense of the sky. Air defense systems should be mobile and maneuverable. They can be quickly deployed in the necessary area, and this is an extremely important element of security.

Ternopil oblast

A DJI Mavis 3 quadcopter and a Renault car were purchased from the city budget for Ternopil community police. The purchased car will be used to respond to emergency situations in the community. A quadrocopter will be sent to a special unit that is on the front line, which is carrying out measures for the defense of Ukraine. Since the beginning of the year, over UAH 150K has been allocated from the city’s budget for the Defense Capacity Support Program.

The RMA held a meeting with representatives of the Western Regional Center of the Coordinating Headquarters on the Treatment of Prisoners of War. They discussed important issues concerning Ukrainian prisoners of war and missing defenders.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Khmelnytskyi City Council reported that a car was sent to the military from the Anti-Aircraft Defense.

Chernivtsi oblast

Command and staff exercises were conducted in Chernivtsi oblast. On December 5-7, representatives of Chernivtsi RMA, other RMAs, city, village and settlement councils and territorial specialized civil protection services performed simulated practical and theoretical tasks, algorithms for responding to various emergency situations and events.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Germany sent another batch of military aid to Ukraine, including 250 155-mm artillery ammunition pieces, a LUNA NG intelligence complex, 10 VECTOR reconnaissance drones with spare parts, 6 border patrol cars, 8 Zetros trucks, 100K first-aid kits, medicines, and 70 automatic grenade launchers of 70 mm calibre.

The Parliament of Bulgaria ratified the Agreement between the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria and the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine on the free transfer of armoured transport equipment.

Ukraine and Estonia agreed to produce robotic defense systems. The first step in the framework of the agreement is to establish strategic cooperation in order to determine the needs of the Defense Forces of Ukraine, as well as ways to use robotic platforms on the battlefield.

The Ministry of Reintegration of Temporarily Occupied Territories, the State Fund for the Promotion of Youth Housing Construction and the German bank KfW signed an agreement to provide an additional EUR 17 mln for preferential housing loans for IDPs. Approximately 400 new subsidized housing loans will be issued in 2024 from these funds.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, had a conversation with Kaia Kallas, Prime Minister of Estonia. Strengthening of Ukraine’s anti-aircraft defense was discussed.

Andrii Yermak, Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, met with the delegation of the French Republic, which included Xavier Chatel, advisers to the President of France, Bertrand Buschwalter and Brigadier General Jean de Monique, deputy head of the personal staff of the President of the French Republic. Parties exchanged views on bilateral contacts for the near future.

Andrii Yermak, Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, met with Baroness Helena Kennedy, famous lawyer on human rights, civil liberties and protection of children, director of the Human Rights Institute of the International Association of Lawyers. They discussed deported children, as well as the steps that should facilitate their return.

Ihor Zhovkva, Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, had a phone conversation with Alessandro Cattaneo, Deputy Diplomatic Advisor to the Prime Minister of the Italian Republic. They discussed priority areas of cooperation during Italy’s presidency of the G7 in 2024.

The Republic of Korea is ready to help Ukraine restore the environment damaged as a result of a full-scale war. Ruslan Strelets, Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine, and Han Hwa-Jin, Minister of the Environment of Korea, signed the corresponding memorandum on cooperation.

Britain will help restore 6 bridges in Kyiv oblast. It is indicated that the reconstruction will take place within the framework of a joint project of the Recovery Agency and the British government.
