It has been the 418th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:  

The enemy conducted 34 airstrikes and launched MLRS 31 attacks. There are wounded among the civilians.

The russian aggressor continues to use terror tactics, maintaining a high threat of launching missile and air strikes throughout Ukraine.

The enemy suffers considerable losses and focuses its main efforts on conducting offensive operations towards Kupiansk, Lyman, Bakhmut, Avdiivka and Marinka. During the day, our defenders repelled more than 50 enemy attacks in the above-mentioned frontline areas. Bakhmut and Marinka remain at the epicenter of the fighting. 

Towards Volyn, Polissia, Siversk and Sloboda, there are no signs of enemy offensive groups detected. Combat readiness of the armed forces of the republic of belarus is currently inspected. 

The enemy fired at Sosnivka, Popivka and Iskryskivkshchyna in Sumy oblast, as well as Okip, Bairak, Vovchansk, Okhrimivka and Nesterne in Kharkiv oblast.

Towards Kupiansk, the enemy conducted unsuccessful offensives near the village of Synkivka. Topoli, Krasne Pershe, Novomlynsk, Dvorichna and Zakhidne in Kharkiv oblast were shelled by the enemy.

Towards Lyman, the enemy conducted offensive actions near Spirne, but was unsuccessful. Stelmakhivka, Nevske, Bilohorivka in Luhansk oblast and Ivanivka and Spirne in Donetsk oblast came under artillery fire.

Fighting for the town of Bakhmut continues. Towards Bakhmut, near Ivanivske and Predtechyne, the enemy conducted unsuccessful offensives.  Vasiukivka, Minkivka, Orikhovo-Vasylivka, Novomarkove, Bakhmut, Ivanivske, Chasiv Yar, Novodmytrivka and Toretsk in Donetsk oblast were affected by enemy shelling.

Towards Avdiivka, the enemy conducted offensive actions in the areas of Novokalynove, Sievierne and Pervomaiske in Donetsk oblast, but did not succeed.  Keramik, Novokalynove, Berdychi, Avdiivka, Tonenke, Netailove, Pervomaiyske and Karlivka were shelled.

Towards Marinka, our defenders repelled numerous enemy attacks near the town of Marinka, Donetsk oblast. At the same time, Krasnohorivka, Marinka, Pobieda, and Novomykhailivka in Donetsk oblast came under enemy fire.

The enemy did not conduct any offensive actions in towards Shakhtarsk. They shelled Shakhtarske, Novoukrainka, Velyka Novosilka, Neskuchne, Zolota Nyva, Prechystivka and Vuhledar in Donetsk oblast.

The enemy continues to conduct defensive actions towards Zaporizhzhia and Kherson. Vremivka and Novopil in Donetsk oblast, Malynivka, Chervone, Huliaipole, Charivne, Mala Tokmachka, Orikhiv, Zaporizhzhia oblast; Nikopol, Dnipro oblast, Zolota Balka, Beryslav, Lviv, Ivanivka, Mykilske, Antonivka in Kherson oblast and the city of Kherson were subjected to shelling.

To replenish their losses in manpower, about 200 newly mobilized russian servicemen arrived in Zaitseve, Donetsk oblast, from the reserve of the russian occupation forces. It has been established that, due to the lack of clear guidelines for their further use, the short period of individual and collective training and the unsatisfactory level of equipment, these servicemen have a low level of moral and psychological state. That is why new occupiers are looking for excuses to avoid participation in hostilities. 

Aviation of the Defense Forces carried out 12 strikes on enemy buildups of manpower and equipment. Also, an enemy reconnaissance UAV of the Merlin type was shot down.

Rocket and artillery units struck 2 buildups of enemy manpower and 1 electronic warfare station.


It is reported on the Children of War platform that russia has killed 470 children. More than 948 people were injured with varying degrees of severity. Most children were affected in Donetsk oblast – 451, Kharkiv oblast – 275, Kyiv oblast – 127, Kherson oblast – 94, Zaporizhzhia oblast – 89, Mykolaiv oblast – 86, Chernihiv oblast – 68, and Dnipropetrovsk oblast – 66.

Dmytro Lubinets, Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights, says that dozens of videos of public executions of Ukrainian soldiers by russians were obtained. He also added that 86% of Ukrainian soldiers in captivity were subjected to physical torture.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the invaders tried to attack near Sinkivka in Kupiansk region but had no success.

Oleh Syniehubov, head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration reported that about 470 K internally displaced persons live in Kharkiv oblast.

On Easter, the enemy continued to shell civilians in the border and frontline cities and villages of Kharkiv, Kupiansk, Chuhuiv and Izium regions.

The shelling of Vovchansk, Chuhuiv region, damaged at least 11 private buildings and caused fires.

In Kurylivka village, Kupiansk region, a private building was damaged by mortars.

A private residential building was also destroyed by shelling in Pershotravneve village, Izium region. There were no casualties.

Donetsk oblast

russian paratroopers have reappeared near Bakhmut. They are armed with TOS-1A Solntsepek heavy flamethrower systems with thermobaric ammunition towards Lyman.

russian troops are suffering considerable losses, yet focusing their main efforts on offensives towards Kupiansk, Lyman, Bakhmut, Avdiivka and Marinka. The Defense Forces of Ukraine repelled more than 50 attacks in these areas yesterday. Bakhmut and Marinka remain at the epicenter of the hostilities.

The invaders shelled 10 settlements, there were a total of 20 attacks.

Towards Volnovakha, 5 buildings were damaged in Novoukrainka. Prechystivka and Bohoiavlenka were also under attack.

Towards Donetsk, 2 buildings were damaged in Soloviove of Ocheretyne community, there were 3 attacks on Kurakhove and isolated attacks on Avdiivka.

Towards Horlivka, Kostiantynivka suffered two missile attacks yesterday. The enemy hit the territory of an enterprise, damaging 3 buildings and a car. Chasiv Yar community was shelled.

Towards Lysychansk, Zvanivka and Pereizne were targeted and russians also shelled Siversk throughout the day.

Pavlo Kyrylenko, Head of Donetsk Regional Military Administration informed that yesterday 4 people were killed as a result of a missile attack on Sloviansk.

In Mariupol, the invaders filled up the Kalchyk river. Its flow is completely blocked. The environmental aftermath of the actions of the russian illegal authorities in the city will be evident this summer.

Vitalii Barabash, Head of Avdiivka City Military Administration said that three children remain in the city. Police planned to evacuate one boy, but no information has been received from the patrol. Shelling continues.

Luhansk oblast

On April 16, russian troops shelled Stelmakhivka, Nevske and Bilohorivka with artillery.  

Artem Lysohor, Head of Luhansk Regional Military Administration said that our military is trying to reduce the enemy’s combat activity. The enemy suffers significant losses every day. Despite the superiority of russian forces in personnel and equipment, the defenders of Ukraine are skillfully using the available weapons.

Over the weekend, russian troops lost at least three T-72 tanks, BTR-80, BMP-2, BREM-1 and an SU-25 attack aircraft towards Lyman and Kupiansk.

Referring to Luhansk Regional Military Administration, over the weekend, russian forces lost three tanks, armoured vehicles and an attack aircraft in the fighting on the border between Luhansk and Kharkiv oblasts.

Luhansk Regional Military Administration reported that the occupation administrations are sending lists of russian passport holders to military commissariats and only locals or their relatives can get to Lysychansk as the city is closed.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

Kyiv City Military Administration reported that there were no accidents during the Easter holidays. According to the official information provided by the National Police of Kyiv, there were no incidents related to the celebration of Easter in Kyiv, and no violations of public order were recorded. In total, more than 1,800 personnel including more than 250 vehicle patrols were deployed.

In Kyiv oblast, servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine help to overcome the consequences of flooding caused by heavy rainfall. According to Serhii Naiev, Commander of the Joint Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, engineering units, together with local authorities, have rapidly set up a pontoon bridge in Ivankiv and are arranging easy access to it.

Natural disasters are not an obstacle for the military to fulfill their duties on the border of Kyiv oblast. Serhii Naiev said that, if needed, battle units will be able to perform tasks to increase the mobility of troops in a short time and ensure swift redeployment of personnel, ammunition, and military equipment.

Restoration of Irpin Lyceum No. 3, which was damaged by 75% by russian shelling in the spring of 2022, continues. Before the full-scale invasion, the lyceum was one of the largest educational institutions of the oblast. According to the management of the educational institution, the roof elements of the lyceum have already been renovated, new walls are being built, and ventilation shafts installed.

According to Kyiv City State Administration, the full-scale war has had a significant impact on the psycho-emotional state of Kyiv residents. Based on the results of the survey on social and psychological support conducted in the Kyiv Digital app, only 11% of 9,795 respondents indicated their condition as stable. At the same time, 38% feel fear about the future and anxiety, 18% describe their condition as unfavorable due to sleep disorders and exhaustion, 12% feel irritated, 12% apathetic, and 9% lonely.

According to the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy, on April 18, the National Museum of History of Ukraine will present a photo exhibition “Chiseled in History. Destroyed by War“, dedicated to the historical heritage of Mariupol destroyed by russian attacks. The official statement says that the exhibition was created by the Mariupol community, by people who sincerely love their city and are deeply affected by the destruction of its history.

World-famous American philanthropist Howard Buffett visited Irpin and witnessed the consequences of russian aggression in the city with his own eyes. Experts from the Kyiv Police Dog Training Centre gave him a tour around Irpin.

Zhytomyr oblast

The RMA reported that the oblast is ready to host and provide accommodation, food, and medical care for internally displaced persons. The first train will arrive in Berdychiv community and all the IDPs will be provided with the necessary payments and, if necessary, basic necessities.

According to the Zhytomyr Oblast State Administration, as of today, public works have been arranged in 13 territorial communities of the oblast, involving 90 people from among the registered unemployed persons. These activities include maintaining the defense structures, converting existing ground facilities into simple shelters, setting up heating points, weaving camouflage nets, and providing assistance to vulnerable people.

According to the voting results conducted in the Kyiv Digital app, Drahomyrova Street in Kyiv is to be renamed in honour of Andrii Verkhohliad, the fallen Hero of Ukraine from Zhytomyr oblast. 69% of voters have chosen this option among five names suggested.

Activities aimed at improving Ukrainian language skills, workshops, quizzes and quests for IDPs are being arranged by Zhytomyr Regional Library for Children and Youth. Also, the library provides free spaces for interaction and communication among children and teenagers, including a board game club, a literary coffee shop, and a teenage club.

Sumy oblast

On Easter, April 16, the enemy continued to attack border communities in Sumy oblast with mortars and artillery. The russians conducted artillery strikes on the territory of Shalyhine community. Velyka Pysarivka was shelled with mortars. As a result, there were 6 mortar bombs. 7 shells fired from self-propelled artillery systems were recorded in Bilopillia region.

On Easter evening, the invaders launched missiles at a psychoneurological boarding school in Shostka region. According to the SES of Sumy oblast, the building is completely destroyed and cannot be restored. 167 patients were saved due to hiding in a shelter. All of them were evacuated later.

The ‘North’ Operational Command reported that at night, the russian military shelled Bilopillia community, Sumy oblast, with a grenade launcher. There were 10 shells fired.

According to the Sumy Regional Military Administration, on April 16, three soldiers from Sumy oblast – Oleksandr Artyukhov from Sumy, Mykola Bei from Boromlyanska community, and Volodymyr Krupelnytskyi from Vorozhba – returned home from captivity. In total, 130 defenders were returned on that day, 48 of whom were considered missing.

Chernihiv oblast

According to the ‘North’ Operational Community, in the evening, during Easter celebrations, the russians bombarded the town of Semenivka, Novhorod-Siverskyi region. Around 11 pm, the occupiers conducted air strikes on one of the enterprises. Fire broke out at the scene. The premises and work equipment were damaged.

The ‘North’ Operational Command reported that in the morning, the enemy attacked the border area once again. Karpovychi and Leonivka villages of Semenivka community come under fire. There were 8 mortar bombs fired.

According to Sribne Village Council, local children express their gratitude to Ukrainian soldiers with colours. For a week, students of a local school wore clothes of certain colours to emphasize important aspects of life during the war. So, on Monday, the children wore black to honour the memory of fallen heroes. Tuesday was dedicated to children and childhood and was marked with bright yellow. On Wednesday, the students came in green – a sign of Ukraine’s invincibility.

According to Chernihiv Regional Military Administration, the flooding in the oblast damaged 12 settlements are affected, and left about 30 more without transport connections. As of now, 474 households with 654 residents have been affected by the flooding.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Nikopol Mayor Oleksandr Saiuk reported that russian forces attacked Nikopol. One person was injured. Five residential buildings, some utility buildings, a dormitory building, a sports club, a private enterprise, and a parking lot were damaged.

An elderly woman sought by her daughter was brought to Kryvyi Rih from the temporarily occupied Kherson oblast. She was seriously injured and was illegally transferred to Henichesk.

Vinnytsia oblast

Kalynivka City Council reported that fighters Oleksandr Shafranovskyi and Vadym Stoliarchuk from Kalynivka were released from russian captivity within the recent exchange of prisoners of war.

Finland handed over equipment for the restoration of energy infrastructure in Vinnytsia. The equipment includes power transformers, mobile gas boilers, current transformers and generators.

Kirovohrad oblast

According to Andrii Raikovych, Head of Kirovohrad Regional State Administration, six fighters from Kirovohrad oblast were released from russian captivity within the recent exchange of prisoners of war.

Poltava oblast

In Poltava oblast, the IDPs of Ukraine public association created a hub to support internally displaced persons moving to other cities to start a new life.

Law enforcement officers of Poltava oblast are collecting evidence of war crimes in Kherson oblast. A combined squad of police officers together with colleagues from Kherson oblast and the military are carrying out stabilization measures in the de-occupied territories.

Cherkasy oblast

According to Mykola Lukashuk, Head of the Regional Council, cars, quadcopters, thermal imagers, generators, and Easter gifts were sent to Ukrainian defenders from Cherkasy oblast communities. 

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

On April 16, the enemy carried out 56 attacks on 16 peaceful settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast, including 46 artillery and 4 air strikes, 4 UAV and 2 missile attacks. There were 52 reports of damage to social infrastructure facilities, apartments, private houses, cars, and other property. One person was injured.

According to the National Police, over the past three days, from April 14 to 16, russian military forces launched about 200 attacks on the territory of Zaporizhzhia, Polohy and Vasylivka regions. Six people were injured as a result of shelling.

On April 17, a memorial plaque in honor of the deceased serviceman Oleksandr Davydenko was unveiled in Antonivka, Mikhaylo-Lukashivka community in Zaporizhzhia oblast. The memorial plaque was placed on the facade of the gymnasium where Oleksandr studied.

russia has caused damage of UAH 32 billion to the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant and other facilities of the State Enterprise Energoatom. Due to the russian armed aggression, the property and infrastructure of the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia NPP and other separate units of Energoatom were damaged or destroyed. The full extent of the losses and damages can be determined after the de-occupation of Zaporizhzhia NPP.

Mykolaiv oblast

Clearing of explosive devices on the territory of Mykolaiv oblast continues. As of April 17, an area of ​​3,314 hectares has been examined, and 14,278 explosive objects removed. More than 700 people in Ukraine have been injured by russian mines in just the last month, and almost a third of them have died.

Volunteers have created a school in Mykolaiv where military personnel are trained to operate various drones and UAVs. The organizers of the school are confident that Ukraine has every chance of victory if it develops and supports technologies that can save the lives of soldiers. Experienced instructors teach the military to pilot regular and kamikaze drones, and UAVs. The training for military personnel is free.

2K walnut seedlings were planted in Mykolaiv,  on an area of ​​4 hectares. The seedlings were evacuated from areas that are constantly under shelling. Now they will grow on the territory of the Voznesenske Forestry.

Odesa oblast

The threat of enemy missile strikes remains high for Odesa oblast. Specifically, the composition of the russian naval group in the Black Sea indicates a missile danger. According to Odesa RMA as of yesterday, there were eleven enemy ships, including two submarines equipped with 8 Kalibers and 4 large landing ships, in the area.

Since the beginning of the war, Odesa Regional Prosecutor’s Office has documented 80 cases of shelling of civilian and critical infrastructure in the oblast, including 63 missile attacks and 122 missile launches by the russian forces. The Prosecutor’s Office did not count the missiles that were shot down by anti-aircraft defense. In addition, russian ships fired at the region seven times with guns, planes dropped bombs twice, and the enemy attacked Odesa with Shahed drones eight times. Since the invasion began, the Prosecutor’s Office has also conducted pre-trial investigations into 104 criminal cases for violations of laws and customs of war.

Displaced children in Odesa received bicycles from foreign donors. 60 city bikes were collected by volunteers from the Dutch charity fund Stichting de Leeuw Kiev (represented in Ukraine by the Kishchentsi CF) and donated to children through the Maugli Children’s Center and Allrise Capital Inc.

Kherson oblast

According to Kherson RMA, russian occupiers have shelled peaceful settlements in Kherson oblast 46 times. They fired 170 shells from heavy artillery, drones, and aircraft. The russian army’s strikes hit populated areas in Beryslav and Kherson regions, damaging recreational areas, warehouses, homes, farm buildings, vehicles, and agricultural machinery. Housing and civilian infrastructure were also damaged in Beryslav and surrounding villages. During the artillery shelling by russian forces in Tavriyskyi district of Kherson, two women were killed, and a school building destroyed. A 59-year-old woman was injured during the shelling of a summer cottage cooperative near the village of Sadove.

In the past two days, the police opened 18 criminal cases related to war crimes committed by the russian army in Kherson oblast. In the village of Petropavlivka, a local 18-year-old received a mine-explosive injury while handling a grenade launcher RPG-18 carelessly. The young man found the weapon in the forest and brought it home.

Public safety and order during Easter services were ensured by 372 police officers. Easter services were held in 73 places of worship in the liberated territories of Kherson oblast, with the participation of about 7K citizens.

Humanitarian aid is being distributed to residents of Kherson oblast. Yesterday, residents of liberated territories received 1,430 food packages, 2,500 cans of food, 2,500 loaves of bread, and 10 hygiene kits from international public organizations, philanthropists, and volunteers.

Volyn oblast

The Manevytsk village council reported that on the eve of the Easter holidays, residents of the community received food packages from the NGO Medicine in Action.

Zakarpattia oblast

RMA representatives visited the fighters of the Zakarpattia 128th Separate Mountain Assault Brigade, performing combat missions in the east of the country in the immediate place of contact with the enemy.

Units of the 128th Separate Mountain Assault Brigade from Zakarpattia received 2 tactical reconnaissance complexes SpecAero X2 Shukach, high-terrain vehicles and all-wheel drive minibuses from benefactors.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

The RMA reported that three Carpathian fighters are among the released prisoners of war.

Military personnel from Ivano-Frankivsk oblast received a car, grocery sets and sleeping bags from Rotary International. In addition, another 4 cars were sent from the regional military administration.

Roman Vynnyk, junior sergeant, Andrii Mishchanchuk, soldier, Roman Partseia, senior sergeant, and Volodymyr Reha, senior soldier, who took part in the liberation of the northern territories last year, were awarded with medals “For Services to Prykarpattia“.

Lviv oblast

The RMA reported that among the 130 people released from captivity, there are three residents of Lviv oblast – Bohdan Nebozhuk and Volodymyr Khortashko from Chervonohrad region and Hennadii Kuzeiko from Strii region.

The RMA presented state awards to two volunteers from Lviv oblast, who have been actively working since the war began. Volodymyr Voloshyn, volunteer and commander of the Halyskyi fraternal regiment of the military-civilian union Combat Brotherhood of Ukraine received a certificate from the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine,  For Services to the Ukrainian people. Olha Iliash, volunteer, and Head of the NGO Academic Space, and soldier of the military-civilian union Military Brotherhood of Ukraine was honored by the chairman of the Verkhovna Rada.

for the first time in the history of Ukrainian medicine, at the Nezlamni (Unbroken) National Rehabilitation Center in Lviv, a prosthesis was implanted directly into a patient’s bone. This is called an osseointegration prosthetics, and it has two advantages: sensitivity and functionality. The first patient was Ihor Krupnov, 56, a veteran of the russian-Ukrainian war, an a captain of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

On the territory of the First Medical Association of Lviv, a production facility with an area of ​​450 square meters was installed to accommodate relocated enterprises and a municipal workshop to produce prostheses thanks to grant support of UAH 5.5 million from UNDP Ukraine.

Rivne oblast

Among the 130 prisoners of war  who were released from captivity, there are 6 residents of Rivne oblast: Nazar Parfeniuk from Klevan, Andrii Soliarskyi from Hrushvytsia, Ivan Hnatiuk and Serhii Kurakin from Varash, Roman Rybak from Rivne and Leonid Kulatskyi from the village of Berehy.

Ternopil oblast

The Ternopil City Council decided to terminate the right of using the land plot for the administration of the Ternopil Eparchy of the moscow church.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

The RMA reported that among the 130 prisoners of war who were released from captivity, there are 2 residents of Khmelnytskyi oblast.

Another rotation of the IAEA monitoring mission took place at the Khmelnytskyi NPP. The key purpose of these missions is to monitor security under military impacts that Ukraine and Ukrainian nuclear facilities are currently experiencing.

Oleksandr Simchyshyn, Mayor of Khmelnytskyi, announced that a Starlink system and two quadcopters Dji Mavic 3 and Dji Mavic 3 Fly Combo were sent to various combat units.

Chernivtsi oblast

In Bukovina, employers received over UAH 900K in compensation for employing IDPs. Since the beginning of 2023, 35 employers of Chernivtsi oblast received compensation for the employment of 91 IDPs.

Farmers and beekeepers of Bukovyna are provided with 30-day passes that will allow them to work during the curfew. This is due to the fact that the majority of agricultural enterprises of Chernivtsi oblast, which ensure the operation of the agro-industrial complex, need to maintain a continuous production cycle during field work.

IDPs living in Klishkovets community received food and hygiene kits from the Good People of Bukovyna NGO.

The RMA reported that on the occasion of the Easter holidays, 53 children, 42 of them from the occupied territories, who are in the Mahal Children’s Boarding Home, received gifts from benefactors.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Slovakia sent all the promised 13 MiG-29 fighters to Ukraine. According to Yaroslav Nagy, Slovak Defense Minister, “this was a complex logistical operation. … The transferred aircraft are a significant support to Ukraine in its repulsion of russian military aggression and protection of human lives.”

Denys Shmyhal, Prime Minister of Ukraine, announced that Canada will send the An-124 aircraft confiscated in russia to Ukraine. “We are preparing to confiscate other assets of the aggressor country in Canada and transfer them to Ukraine as part of the new package of sanctions, in particular, against the Volga-Dnepr company,” said the Prime Minister of Ukraine.

Grant Shapps, Head of the British Energy Department, announced that five G7 countries (the US, Canada, Great Britain, France and Japan) formed an alliance to oust the russian federation from the international nuclear energy market. The agreement will maintain a stable supply of fuel for today’s needs and ensure safe, reliable fuel development for today’s reactors.

The Headquarters of the Armed Forces of Sweden reported that large-scale military exercises are starting in the country. Military personnel from Sweden, Ukraine, the US, Great Britain, Finland, Poland, Norway, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Denmark, Austria, Germany and France are participating in the Aurora 23 exercise.

After the full-scale invasion, the International Ice Hockey Federation suspended russian and belarusian national teams from the competition. Ukraine resumed electricity exports to Slovakia. According to the press service of Ukrenergo, Ukraine exports 200 MW every hour to Slovakia and small imports from Slovakia continue (2−4 MW at different times).
