War in Ukraine today: latest news, 3 May 2025 (photo)

It has been the 1165 th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

123 combat engagements have taken place in the frontline. Our defenders are stopping the enemy, holding the line and destroying the russians’ plans.

Today, russian artillery shelling hit Mykolaivka, Chernihiv oblast; Yizdetske, Ponomarenky, Uhroidy, Bila Bereza, Novovasylivka, Malushyne, Sumy oblast. Mkhy in Chernihiv oblast; Miropilske and Krasnopillia in Sumy oblast were hit by air strikes.

Today, the enemy made two attempts to attack Ukrainian troops’ positions near Vovchansk towards Kharkiv.

Towards Kupiansk, the enemy has been storming the positions of our defenders near Zahryzove and the battle is ongoing.

The aggressor attacked the positions of our troops nine times towards Lyman near Ridkodub, Yampolivka, Kolodiazi, Torske and Hryhorivka. One firefight is currently ongoing.

Towards Kramatorsk, our defenders repelled three enemy attacks near Chasiv Yar and in the direction of Maiske and Bila Hora. One battle is ongoing.

Towards Toretsk, the enemy attacked our troops’ positions once near Krymske.

The enemy is still highly active towards Pokrovsk. Forty-six clashes of varying intensity started here today. Ukrainian troops are repelling enemy attacks in the areas of Stara Mykolaivka, Zelene Pole, Miroliubivka, Yelyzavetivka, Lysivka, Shevchenko, Kotlyne, Novoserhiivka, Novooleksandrivka, Kotliarivka, Troitske, Andriivka, Nova Poltavka, Miroliubivka and Oleksiivka. Our defenders are giving the occupier a worthy rebuff, 10 battles are ongoing. The enemy’s aviation struck Shevchenko Pershoye with guided aerial bombs.

The occupiers tried to break through 50 times near Kostiantynopil, Novosilka, Rivne, Pryvilne, Odradne, Zelenyi Pole, Novopol, Shevchenko and Bahatyr towards Novopavlivka, 28 clashes are still ongoing. Zelene Pole, Novopil, Komyshuvakha, Temyrivka and Novodarivka were hit by air strikes.

Towards Huliaipole, the enemy used unguided aerial missiles against Malynivka and Huliaipole.  

Ukrainian defenders repelled two attacks near Novodanylivka and Kamianske.

Towards Kursk, Ukrainian defenders repelled five attacks, and four more combat engagements are ongoing. In addition, the enemy launched one air strike using two guided bombs and fired 119 times, five of which were from multiple launch rocket systems.  

The enemy did not conduct any offensive actions towards Siversk, Huliaipole and Kherson.

Ukrainian troops are depleting the enemy along the entire frontline and in the rear.  

The Defence Intelligence of Ukraine informed that for the first time in history, a Ukrainian unmanned boat shot down a russian aircraft. Ukrainian surface drones equipped with R-73 aircraft missiles hit a russian Su-30 fighter jet.

The Air Force reported that on the night of 3 May, russia attacked the territory of Ukraine with 2 Iskander-M ballistic missiles and 183 attack UAVs and other types of imitation drones. They managed to shoot down 77 of them, while another 73 were lost locally.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

Frontline
Oleh Syniehubov, Head of Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, reported that there were six combat engagements towards Kharkiv yesterday, with the enemy attacking in the areas of Vovchansk and Kamianka. Six oenemy attacks were registered towards Kupiansk in the last day. The defence forces repelled the enemy’s assault actions near Kolisnykivka, Nova Kruhliakivka and Zahryzove.

Pavlo Shamshyn, Spokesman of the Kharkiv Regional Military Unit said that in April, russian troops stormed Vovchansk and Dvorichna and lost 2,000 soldiers, 900 of whom were irretrievably killed and the rest wounded. Another 12 servicemen were taken prisoner. The defence forces destroyed more than 2,400 pieces of equipment, including the Borshchovyk system that detected Starlink terminals.

The State Border Guard Service reported that border guards of the Fenix unmanned aerial systems unit of the Pomsta brigade destroyed 10 motorcycles and two ATVs of russian invaders towards Kupiansk using drones.

 

Attacks

On the morning of 3 May, russian aircraft struck Borova with four bombs, at least three of which hit the central part of the village. The Village Council reported that the strike killed a 77-year-old man. The massive Russian strike caused a large-scale fire in the village, covering an area of 2,000 sq m. According to the State Emergency Service, a commercial building was destroyed, residential and administrative buildings, and commercial facilities were damaged. Two women, aged 86 and 72, were injured.

On 3 May, shelling was also recorded in the village of Pisky-Radkivski. Residential buildings, outbuildings and power lines were damaged there.

In Kupiansk, russian troops conducted a direct airstrike on the building of the state fire and rescue unit of the State Emergency Service. At the time of the strike, the personnel were responding to a call, and there was only one rescuer in the unit, who was not injured. This was reported by the SES on 3 May.

Ruslan Kravchenko, Head of the State Tax Service of Ukraine, reported that in Kupiansk region, the building of the State Tax Inspectorate was damaged as a result of a russian attack.

Oleh Syniehubov, Head of Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, reported that in the evening of 2 May, after 9:30pm, the russian military attacked Kharkiv with drones. 51 people were injured, including two girls aged 11 and 16. As a result of the shelling, 10 fires were recorded in different districts of the city: Slobidskyi, Osnovianskyi, Saltivskyi and Kyivskyi districts. Private and multi-apartment residential buildings, warehouses, industrial facilities, vehicles and infrastructure were on fire. As of the morning of 3 May, eight injured people in moderate condition were treated in hospitals in the city.

The Prosecutor’s Office said that at least 15 Geranium-2 UAVs with thermobaric warheads attacked Kharkiv. This type of weapon is extremely dangerous, causing a powerful explosion and a high-temperature wave, which leads to significant destruction and a large number of victims.

Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office said that a man was killed in a russian air strike on Kupyansk, and another person may be under the rubble. A series of air strikes in the town damaged a number of households and outbuildings. At the site where the civilian was killed, fragments of an aircraft munition were found. According to preliminary data, it was a FAB-1500 with a planning and correction module.

Oleh Syniehubov, Head of the RMA, reported that four settlements and the city of Kharkiv suffered from enemy attacks yesterday, on 2 May. The enemy actively used various types of weapons in Kharkiv oblast: 11 KABs, 3 FPV drones, 21 Shahed UAVs, 28 Geranium-2 UAVs.

On 2 May, russian strikes damaged and destroyed civilian infrastructure: a private house, an outbuilding, a shop and an apartment building in Kupiansk region; 2 private houses, 2 outbuildings and a warehouse building in Bohodukhiv region; and an outbuilding in Izium region.

Donetsk oblast

Frontline

The Khortytsia operational and strategic group of troops reported that towards Pokrovsk, soldiers of the 46th separate airmobile brigade destroyed Russian infantrymen and equipment of the occupation army – two Nona self-propelled artillery systems, a tank and a cannon.

Dmytro Zaporozhets, Spokesman of the Luhansk military command, stated that the russian army has begun actively using Molniya UAVs to strike the town of Kostiantynivka. The city is constantly under air strikes, artillery attacks, and multiple rocket launchers. Towards Kramatorsk, russian troops are using Molniya UAVs more often. The largest concentration of russian troops is recorded in Novyi Chasiv Yar area.

 

Attacks

Serhii Horbunov, Head of the City Military Administration, reported that one person was wounded as a result of a strike by the russian military on Kostiantynivka. Private houses, an infrastructure facility, a multi-storey building, gas pipeline and power lines were also damaged. Since the beginning of the day on 3 May, the russian army has attacked the town at least three times: in the morning, they fired five missiles from the Smerch multiple rocket launcher system, at around 12:15pm the occupiers dropped a FAB-250 bomb on Kostiantynivka, and the next strike was carried out by a Molniya-2 drone.

At night, russian troops attacked 8 settlements: Bilozerske, Andriivka, Vesela Hora, Raiske, Samarske, Sviatohorivka, Sofiivka, Shakhove. Donetsk police reported that there is a wounded person in Raiske. At least 13 civilian objects were damaged, including residential buildings, educational institutions, an outpatient clinic, and a farm.

Vadym Filashkin, Head of the Regional Military Administration, reported that four people were killed and eight wounded in Donetsk region yesterday.

The russian army shelled 19 settlements in Donetsk oblast yesterday. 132 civilian objects were damaged, including 82 residential buildings.

The russian army dropped a D-30SN UMPB bomb on Novokhatske in Komar community, killing three civilians and injuring another. Seven private houses were damaged.

Russian troops hit Klynove of Kostiantynivka community with a KAB-250 bomb, killing one person and destroying a private house.

The occupiers attacked Kostiantynivka with a bomb, artillery and UAVs – two residents were injured, an apartment building and a private house, two shops, a pharmacy, a cafe, an educational institution, an administrative building, production workshops and critical infrastructure were damaged.

Two people were injured in Pokrovsk, a civilian car was damaged. Two more people were injured in Hryshyne of Pokrovsk community, an administrative building was damaged. A religious building was destroyed in Myrnohrad. Five private houses were damaged in Zolote Kolodiaz.

Russian troops shelled Kramatorsk with drones, damaging two administrative buildings and four non-residential premises. In Oleksiievo-Druzhkivka, nine households were damaged.

Illinivske community was under bombardment. In Oleksandro-Kalynove, three KAB-250 bombs damaged an apartment block and 21 private houses. Three more bombs fell in Yablunivka, damaging 15 houses.

The russian army shelled Lyman with a Uragan multiple rocket launcher and damaged 19 private houses, 16 outbuildings and a garage. In Shandryholove, russian drones damaged a private house, an outbuilding and a religious object.

Other

The RMA reported that in the part of Donetsk oblast that is more than 10km away from the frontline, the curfew will be in effect from 9pm to 5am. In the part of Donetsk oblast that is less than 10km from the frontline, the restrictions will be in effect from 3pm to 11am.

Yesterday 168 people, including 18 children, were evacuated from the frontline.

Mariupol City Council reported that in the temporarily occupied Mariupol, the russian authorities unveiled a stele of the “city of military glory”. It depicts the decree of russian President vladimir putin, the coat of arms of the russian Federation and the dates when russia began occupying Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts in 2014. The victory stele was erected in the city, which was destroyed to the ground three years ago and turned into a mass grave by the russian occupiers.

Luhansk oblast

 

Yesterday the enemy tried to advance in Bilohorivka towards Siversk. Ukrainian defenders repelled the enemy attack there. Russians conducted 27 attacks towards Lyman, in particular near Hrekivka. The RMA reported that the occupiers sent 196 UAVs at Ukrainian fortifications and fired 14 times with artillery.

Oleksii Kharchenko, Head of Luhansk Regional Military Administration, said that more and more people from remote regions of the russian Federation appear in Siverskodonetsk, hoping for quick money for the demonstrative reconstruction of houses. However, it turns out that even in a dilapidated city, living conditions are better than they were at home. Therefore, wives and children move in with their husbands. They are settling in the “nationalised” apartments of the evacuated residents.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

KCMA reported that in April, russian shelling in Kyiv killed 14 people, including one child; 98 residents were injured; 245 buildings and 108 cars were damaged. The air alert in the city was declared 46 times last month. A total of 13 attacks using enemy strike UAVs, guided and ballistic missiles were recorded.

The RMA reported that UAH 135.7m was additionally allocated from the regional budget to restore housing damaged by russian aggression in Kyiv oblast. These are 11 apartment buildings in Hlevakha, Irpin, Dmytrivka and Petrivka communities.

A barrier-free rehabilitation module for war victims was opened in Slavutych. The new inclusive space is designed for people who have been injured or lost limbs due to the war. The space will provide physical, psychological and legal assistance, as well as employment and retraining services. The project is implemented by the Mindy Foundation with the support of UNDP and the Government of Japan.

To improve safety and efficiency during humanitarian demining, the pyrotechnic units of Kyiv Oblast State Emergency Service use a modern Elektroland robotic complex. The robot is equipped with a manipulator, video surveillance system and special engineering equipment that allows it to remotely inspect areas, detect explosive objects, as well as move and defuse them without risk to personnel.

The filming of the action drama Service 112 by ICTV2 with the support of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine has started in Kyiv. The series, which took almost a year to prepare, will show the everyday life of police officers, rescuers, doctors and gas workers – those who are the first to respond to calls at 112. Many of the stories are based on real events.

Zhytomyr oblast

In April 2025, air alerts were declared 26 times in Zhytomyr oblast, with a total of almost 39 hours of alerts. As a result of russian shelling, one person was killed and 11 people were injured during the month. More than 35 residential buildings, several dozen one-storey buildings, 14 garages and more than 20 outbuildings were damaged.

Sumy oblast

Mykola Noha, Mayor of Shostka, reported that during the night of 3 May, the russian army carried out an airstrike on the city of Shostka. As a result, a church, residential buildings, an educational institution, and infrastructure facilities were damaged.

According to Sumy Prosecutor’s Office, in Seredyna-Buda community, two men were injured due to russian airstrikes and were hospitalised. One of the injured later passed away in the hospital. Around 4:30pm, russian forces dropped two guided air-dropped bombs on the civilian infrastructure of the community.

Yurii Lysenko, Stetskivka village elder, informed that as a result of enemy shelling from multiple launch rocket systems in Stetskivka, Sumy community, on 2 May, seven houses were damaged on several streets. One household suffered the most damage — a summer kitchen and a barn were burned down, and the house’s windows were shattered.

The Regional Military Administration reported that during the day, from the morning of 2 May to the morning of 3 May, russian forces carried out nearly 130 shellings across 43 settlements in 14 territorial communities of the oblast. The enemy actively used guided air-dropped bombs (nearly 30 strikes), FPV-drones (25 strikes), and UAV-dropped grenades (nearly 30 strikes). The most attacks were recorded in Sumy and Shostka regions.

In Sumy oblast, over the past day, the following damage and destruction were recorded:

  • In Seredyna-Buda community, a private residential house was damaged.
  • In Krasnopillia community, a private residential house was damaged.
  • In Sumy community, three private residential houses, two farm buildings, and a post office building were damaged.
  • In Shostka community, infrastructure facilities, residential houses, an educational institution, social sector facilities, and vehicles were damaged.

Over the past day, local authorities, together with units of the State Emergency Service, the National Police, and non-governmental organisations from border communities, evacuated 38 people.

Sumy police announced that White Angels crew evacuated a 74-year-old resident of Yunakivka community, along with her three dogs and more than 30 chickens, from a territory under enemy shelling. For a long time, despite the shelling, the woman refused to leave her home, farm, and beloved animals. After a russian bomb struck near her house, she agreed to evacuation — but only with her animals.

Chernihiv oblast

Chernihiv Border Detachment reported that during the day on 2 May, russian forces attacked four border communities in Chernihiv oblast: Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka, Horodnia, and Snovsk. The enemy carried out mortar shelling (37 explosions) and artillery shelling (37 explosions), launched FPV-drone strikes (23 explosions), and dropped explosive devices from UAVs (36 explosions). Eighteen settlements came under enemy fire.

The North Operational Command informed that as a result of russian shelling in Semenivka community on 2 May, one private house was damaged in the villages of Kostobobriv and Medvedivka. In Tymonovychi village, a non-residential building caught fire, and an educational institution was also damaged.

According to the Prozorro public procurement platform, in Chernihiv, plans are underway to repair a residential building on Kozatska Street that was struck by a russian Shahed drone on 15 March. The building is set to be restored at a cost of over UAH 4.8m, with major repairs expected to be completed by 30 September 2025.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Council, reported that the Air Armed forces of Ukraine were working in the oblast at night. The defenders of the sky destroyed 4 enemy UAVs.

In the evening and at night, the enemy attacked the Marhanets community of Nikopol region. They attacked with artillery and a kamikaze drone. In the morning, the occupiers launched a drone at Myrove community. In other communities of the oblast, the night passed without shelling. 

In Pokrovsk community of Nikopol region, two people were injured as a result of careless handling of an explosive device: A 57-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman. According to doctors, the children brought home a detonator from an FPV drone, which exploded in the man’s hands.

Today, the enemy attacked three regions of the oblast. They are Nikopol, Kryvyi Rih and Sinelnykivka. The invaders made more than two dozen attacks in Nikopol region. They used artillery and kamikaze drones. They targeted the region centre, Myrove, Marhanets, Pokrovsk and Chervonohryhorivka communities. Three private houses, 4 cars, a transport company and infrastructure were damaged.

Velyka Mykhailivka and Novopavlivka communities of Synelnykove region were also hit. There, 4 private houses and buildings that were not in use were damaged. Zelenodolsk community of Kryvyi Rih region was hit by a drone.

Kirovohrad oblast

A car rally and action in support of prisoners of war and missing persons “We are the voice of those whose cries are not heard” took place in the village Pobuzke in  Kirovohrad oblast. The event was attended by relatives of prisoners of war and missing persons from villages Kapitanka, Lipovenke, Lyushnyuvate, Pushkove, and Sukhyi Tashlyk. From Holovanivsk, as well as from Mykolaiv and Cherkasy oblasts.

Poltava oblast

Poltava once again held a rally in support of Ukrainian prisoners of war and their families. In total, more than fifty people took part in the picket. The same number of motorists joined the rally in support of prisoners of war.

Cherkasy oblast

Ihor Taburets, Head of  Cherkasy Regional Military Administration, reported that at night, defenders shot down 10 russian UAVs in Cherkasy oblast.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Ivan Fedorov, Head of Zaporizhzhia RMA, reported that russian forces attacked Bilenke village by FPV drones. The blast wave and shrapnel damaged private houses. Preliminary reports indicate no casualties.

According to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), russian forces made slight advances near Mali Shcherbaky village. Geolocated footage published on 27 April indicates minor recent advances by russian troops to the northeast of Mali Shcherbaky. The village remains under the control of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, although russian forces continue their attempts to capture the settlement.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that Ukraine’s Defense Forces repelled 5 russian attacks near Shcherbaky, Mala Tokmachka and Stepove in Orikhiv region. In Huliaipole region, russian troops launched 6 assaults near Vysoke village.

Ivan Fedorov, Head of the RMA, stated that on 2 May, russian forces carried out 400 strikes on 11 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast, including 228 drone attacks on Kamianske, Huliaipole, Shcherbaky, Novodanylivka, Mala Tokmachka, Charivne and Novodarivka. 

The number of people injured in the drone attack on Zaporizhzhia during the night of 2 May has increased to 33. 6 of them remain hospitalised – 2 in serious condition and 4 in moderate condition.

As a result of the 1 May drone attack, 56 apartment buildings, 29 private houses, non-residential buildings and a dormitory were damaged. As of 12:20pm on 3 May, municipal workers had sealed broken windows in 20 apartment buildings and 8 private houses.

Mykolaiv oblast

According to the RMA, on the night of 3 May, russian forces launched a Shahed drone attack on Mykolaiv. There were no casualties reported. Air defence systems destroyed 8 Shahed drones over the oblast.

On 2 May, russian forces twice attacked Kutsurub community by FPV drones and targeted Ochakiv city by a similar drone. There were no injuries reported. Also, a strike UAV – type yet to be determined – attacked Pervomaisk community the same day. There were no casualties occurred.

Odesa oblast

According to the Air Force, in the morning, an enemy target was detected moving from the Black Sea toward Pivdenne/Chornomorske.

During the day, a high-speed target from the Black Sea was detected heading toward the south of Odesa oblast.

Kherson oblast

Referring to the RMA, russian drones attacked the central part of Kherson. Preliminary reports indicate 1 person was killed and 2 injured.

 

The Prosecutor’s Office reported that as of 5pm, 3 May, 4 people were wounded and 1 killed due to russian attacks in Kherson oblast. Criminal proceedings have been opened for violations of the laws and customs of war by russian forces.

The RMA said that russian forces targeted Kherson by drones, wounding 2 women in Tsentralnyi district of Kherson. They sustained blast and craniocerebral injuries, concussions and shrapnel wounds.

According to the CMA, in the early morning, russian forces struck a secondary school in Dniprovskyi district of Kherson. A shell hit the roof of the workshop building, damaging 8m² of roofing.

Russian forces shelled the Kherson suburb of Antonivka with artillery in the morning, injuring a 74-year-old woman. She suffered a blast injury and shrapnel wounds to the chest and thighs. Her condition is assessed as moderate.

Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of the RMA, stated that on 2 May, russian forces shelled 19 settlements in Kherson oblast. 10 private houses and several vehicles were damaged. 1 person was killed and 5 injured.

The RMA informed that a 50-year-old man was wounded in a russian attack on Bilozirka on 2 May. He is currently hospitalised with a blast injury, concussion and traumatic brain injury.

A 56-year-old Kherson resident sought medical help with a blast injury and concussion after being hit by a russian drone in Tsentralnyi district of Kherson the day before.

Volyn oblast

Lutsk Zonal Department of the Military Law Enforcement Service received 5 HP laptops and 3 Canon black-and-white laser MFPs + 2 cartridges from Lutsk community.

Zakarpattia oblast

The 3rd international congress of the Coordination Platform Vzaemodiia was held in Uzhhorod. The large-scale event, both live and online, brought together about 400 participants from Ukraine and the world. The focus of the discussion was the protection of democratic values, support for veterans, community development, humanitarian policy, and strengthening partnerships between the government, municipalities, and the public sector.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

The RMA reported that a day of educational leisure was organized for the children of the defenders at the Hedzio Park of Legends in Yaremche.

Lviv oblast

Over 4,000 oak trees were planted in Lviv oblast as part of the Green Country initiative. The event took place within the framework of the environmental initiative of the President of Ukraine Green Country, which involves planting one billion trees in five years and increasing the area of ​​forests by 1m hectares in 15 years. In total, 38,000 new trees were planted in seven locations in Lviv oblast as part of the campaign.

Rivne oblast

Representatives of the RMA held an extended meeting with families of missing servicemen in Sarny. They discussed procedures for searching for the missing, the procedure for assigning and conducting DNA examinations, communication with investigators, and many others. Those present had the opportunity to leave official appeals. This is the eighth extended meeting in the oblast. The next one is planned in Mlynov.

Ternopil oblast

At a regular meeting of the 47th session of Ternopil City Council was decided that the Honorary Citizen of Ternopil title was posthumously awarded to 20 Heroes from the city.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Khmelnytskyi City Council reported that 470 active military personnel will receive material assistance totaling UAH 4.7m.

Chernivtsi oblast

In Bukovina, psychoneurological boarding houses received 5 portable EcoFlow charging stations worth over UAH 226,000 from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Ukraine.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, had a phone conversation with Mette Frederiksen, Danish Prime Minister. They discussed support for Ukraine.

The British Intelligence review notes that in the first 4 months of 2025, the russian federation lost about 160,000 soldiers, and total losses since the beginning of the invasion are estimated at 950,000. Despite significant losses, russia has not yet achieved significant successes on the front.

Ukrainian military personnel will take part in the 80th anniversary parade of Victory in Europe in the United Kingdom. On 5 May, they will join about a thousand representatives of the British armed forces, including cavalry and military bands.
