War in Ukraine today: latest news, 28 July 2025 (photo)

It has been the 1251 th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

Since the beginning of the day, there have been 90 combat clashes along the entire front line.

The invaders continue to strike border settlements. The settlements of Arkhypivka in Chernihiv oblast; Tovstodubove, Yizdetske, Bila Bereza, Khodyne, Bobylivka, Myropilske, Pokrovka, Novodmytrivka, Seredyna-Buda, Nova Huta, Malushyne and Stara Huta in Sumy oblast have been hit by enemy artillery fire.

Six combat engagements have taken place towards North Slobozhanske and Kursk since the beginning of the day. In addition, the enemy carried out eight air strikes, dropping 21 guided bombs, and fired 159 times on the positions of our troops and populated areas, including five times with multiple launch rocket systems.

Towards South Slobozhanske, enemy units carried out two attacks on the positions of our troops in the areas of Zelene and Krasne Pershe.

Towards Kupiansk, the enemy attempted to storm the positions of Ukrainian units in the area of Stepova Novoselivka.

Towards Lyman, the aggressor attacked 19 times today in the areas of the settlements of Novoiehorivka, Karpivka, Zelena Dolyna, Yampolivka, and in the direction of Dronivka and Serebrianka. Five combat engagements are currently ongoing.

Towards Siversk, the enemy attempted to advance three times near Hryhorivka and towards Vyimka – all attempts by the enemy to advance on the positions of our units were repelled.

Towards Kramatorsk, the Defence Forces repelled one attack in the direction of Predtechyne.

Towards Toretsk, the enemy attacked the positions of our troops six times in the areas of Dyliivka, Toretsk, and Rusyn Yar. One battle is currently ongoing.

Towards Pokrovsk, the enemy attacked the positions of our defenders 34 times today in the areas of the settlements of Popiv Yar, Maiak, Novoekonomichne, Razine, Lysivka, Chunyishyne, Zvirove, Kotlyne, Udachne, Novomykolaivka, Horikove, Zelenyi Kut and Dachne. Fighting continues in seven locations.

Towards Novopavlivka, our defenders repelled five enemy attacks in the areas of the settlements of Zelenyi Hai, Zelenе Pole, Piddubne, Oleksandrohrad, Shevchenko, Voskresenka, and Temyrivka. Five more clashes are ongoing.

Towards Huliaipole, no clashes have been reported at this time, but the enemy has launched air strikes with unguided missiles and guided bombs on the settlements of Zaliznychne and Bilohiria.

Towards Orikhiv, our defenders repelled an attack in Kamianka, and Novoandriivka was hit by the invaders’ air strikes.

Towards Kherson, Ukrainian units repelled three enemy assaults.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that since 2022, 5,857 Ukrainians have been released from russian captivity. An additional 555 people returned outside of official prisoner exchanges. More than a thousand more soldiers were returned under the Istanbul agreements.


The president approved NSDC sanctions against 53 individuals and 95 companies. They synchronise Ukrainian restrictions with the 18th package of European sanctions and target russian military production. The restrictions apply not only to russian companies and citizens, but also to 53 individuals and legal entities from China, Iran, India, Azerbaijan and other countries. In particular, sanctions have been imposed on entities associated with the russian shadow tanker fleet. The second decision concerns more than 90 companies that extract rare earth metals, which are key to the production of electronics and drones for the russian army.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

According to the Regional Military Administration (RMA), in Darnytskyi district, eight people were injured as a result of a nighttime enemy drone attack. Four people were hospitalized, including a three-year-old girl that suffered a laceration.

The russian attack damaged a 25-story residential building, the surrounding area, and cars parked near the building. In one of the building sections windows were shattered and balcony glazing damaged from the 3rd to the 11th floor.

According to Mykola Kalashnyk, Head of the Regional Military Administration, on the night of July 28, a dozen and a half russian drones were intercepted in airspace over Kyiv oblast during the attempted attack on populated areas. As a result of the enemy attack, a civilian car was damaged in Vyshhorod region. No strikes on critical or residential infrastructure were reported.

The Regional Military Administration reported that on July 27, sixty children of Ukrainian defenders from Kyiv oblast returned home from a tour to the Kingdom of Spain. During the trip, the children visited numerous museums, took part in excursions to historical landmarks, cultural centers, and entertainment venues across Spain.

Zhytomyr oblast

In Zhytomyr, instructors from the Armed Forces of Ukraine conducted drone operation training for young people. The session took place as part of the School of Leaders project, initiated by the public organization “Centuria”.

Zviahel community is creating an accessible environment for veterans and people with limited mobility. Thanks to the city’s financial support program, individual lifts are being installed in Zviahel — 99.9% of the costs are covered by the city council, while 0.1% is funded by homeowners’ associations (OSBB).

In Korostyshiv community, a recovery day was held for women whose loved ones died defending Ukraine. The event was organized within the framework of the national mental health program “How Are You?”, with the participation of veteran support specialists. The participants went on an excursion to the “Polisska Khata” cultural and artistic center in the village of Horodske and took part in a traditional didukh-making workshop.

Sumy oblast

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that Ukrainian defenders repelled nine russian assault actions on North Slobozhanske and Kursk fronts over the past day. On 27 July, the russian army carried out 14 airstrikes, dropped 31 guided aerial bombs, and conducted 363 attacks, including six by multiple launch rocket systems.

On the morning of 28 July, a 45-year-old man was injured in Krasnopillia community as a result of an enemy drone attack. He was wounded while taking a cow out to pasture. The man was hospitalized in serious condition.

In Seredyna-Buda community, a 66-year-old man was injured during a morning attack by multiple launch rocket systems. At the time of the strike, he was in his apartment. He was hospitalized with multiple burns. A residential building in the community also burned down following a direct hit by a guided aerial bomb.

According to the Regional Military Administration, as a result of russian shelling on 27 July, three people were killed and 20 injured. In Yunakivka community, the enemy dropped a VOG grenade from a UAV onto a civilian bus, killing three women aged 66, 74, and 78, and injuring 19 others. In Seredyna-Buda community, a man was wounded by an FPV-drone strike.

During the day, from the morning of 27 July to the morning of 28 July, russian forces carried out nearly 90 attacks on 33 settlements across 14 territorial communities in the oblast. The highest number of strikes was recorded in Sumy and Shostka regions. The enemy actively used guided aerial bombs (over 20 strikes), VOG grenade drops from UAVs (over 20 strikes), and multiple launch rocket systems (15 strikes), as well as FPV-drones and other UAVs.

As a result of enemy strikes on Sumy region:

  • In Putyvl community – two private residential houses and one non-residential building were damaged;
  • In Hlukhiv community – an administrative building and several non-residential structures were damaged;
  • In Sumy community – windows of two five-storey residential buildings and one three-storey residential building were shattered; civilian infrastructure and a private house were also affected;
  • In Yunakivka community – a passenger bus was damaged;
  • In Seredyna-Buda community – a car was damaged.

Chernihiv oblast

Chernihiv Border Guard Detachment reported that during the day on 27 July, russian forces attacked three border communities in Chernihiv oblast: Semenivka, Snovsk, and Horodnia. A total of 25 strikes were recorded. The enemy carried out mortar shelling (5 explosions), launched UAVs of the ‘Shahed’ type (2 explosions) and ‘Molniya’ type (1 explosion), used FPV-drones (5 explosions), and dropped explosive devices from UAVs (13 explosions).

In Semenivka community, non-residential buildings caught fire on 27 July as a result of enemy strikes: in Medvedivka village due to an explosive device dropped from a UAV, and in Semenivka town following a strike by a ‘Molniya’ drone.

Viacheslav Chaus, Regional Governor, informed that over the past week, the enemy carried out 158 strikes on Chernihiv oblast, launching 43 attacks on 38 settlements. Chernihiv, Nizhyn, and Koriukivka regions came under fire, with Novhorod-Siverskyi suffering the most. The shelling ignited residential buildings, a hangar, and dry grass.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Air defence systems were active in the oblast. The defenders destroyed 3 enemy UAVs.

The occupiers attacked Nikopol region by drones and artillery, targeting the regional centre, Myrove, Chervonohryhorivka, Pokrov and Marhanets. A 49-year-old woman and a 15-year-old girl were injured in the attacks. They received the necessary medical assistance. A fire broke out as a result. A multi-storey residential building, an educational institution, an administrative building, 3 private houses, utility buildings and a power line were damaged. Also, the enemy attacked Mezhova community in Synelnykove region. A fire occurred, damaging an agricultural enterprise, an unused building and administrative building.

The russian forces continue to terrorise Nikopol and Synelnykove regions. Nikopol region was shelled by artillery and drones over 15 times. In Nikopol, a 59-year-old woman was injured due to artillery shelling and received medical aid. Overall, the enemy targeted Nikopol, Pokrov, Myrove and Marhanets communities, causing multiple fires. 2 utility structures were destroyed. 9 private houses, utility buildings and power lines sustained damage. Civilian infrastructure affected. Furthermore, the enemy launched attacks by KABs and UAVs on Malomykhailivka, Mezhova and Pokrov communities in Synelnykove region. A 45-year-old man and a 63-year-old woman were injured. 6 private houses, a shop, a car and infrastructure were damaged.

Vinnytsia oblast

The mother of the fallen defender Yurii Shpak from Horodkivka village in Vinnytsia oblast received a posthumous state award on behalf of her son – the medal For Military Service to Ukraine. On 27 July 2023, Yurii was killed as a result of russian artillery shelling of Ukrainian positions.

Kirovohrad oblast

Andrii Raikovych, Head of the RMA, stated that in Kropyvnytskyi, a building belonging to the State Emergency Service was damaged by a russian UAV strike. A fire broke out as a result of the drone impact and firefighting equipment was damaged. During the air raid alert, personnel were in a shelter. There were no casualties or injuries reported. The blast wave damaged the premises of the regional philharmonic hall. Specialists are currently inspecting the site. Once assessments are completed, municipal services and a special commission will begin restoration work. There were no injuries reported.

Tetiana Cherniaieva-Zaitseva, Author, reported that in Kropyvnytskyi, an installation was unveiled to mark the Day of Remembrance for defenders, volunteers and civilians who died in captivity. The roses in the installation symbolise those killed in Olenivka tragedy.

Poltava oblast

In Kremenchuk, a memorial event was held to honour Ukrainian military personnel, volunteers and civilians who died in russian captivity. The ceremony took place in a local park.

In Poltava, a commemorative event was held to remind citizens of the daily national moment of silence. Participants gathered in the Heroes of Ukraine Memorial Square. The event marked the 3rd anniversary of the Olenivka terrorist attack.

Junior Sergeant Oleksandr Verbenets from Lubny was killed during combat operations near Popivka village in Sumy oblast. He was killed on 24 July 2025. Oleksandr was 41 years old.

Cherkasy oblast

Ihor Taburets, Head of the Regional Military Administration, reported that in Cherkasy oblast, 4 attack drones were destroyed overnight by air defence forces. There were no injuries or damage to infrastructure reported. 

On 28 July, a ceremony was held in Cherkasy to honour Ukrainian soldiers who died in russian captivity. Relatives of the fallen, service members and government representatives gathered in the city square and laid flowers in memory of the victims.

In Cherkasy, a memorial ceremony was held for fallen soldier Oleksandr Kuzmenko. He served as a second-category border service inspector and was killed in combat in Kharkiv oblast.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Yesterday, 27 July, the occupiers carried out 523 strikes on 13 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast. russian forces launched five airstrikes on Stepnohirsk, Novoandriivka, and Malynivka. 379 UAVs of various types (mostly FPV) attacked Chervonodniprovka, Kamianske, Huliaipole, Orikhiv, Shcherbaky, Novodanylivka, Mala Tokmachka, and Charivne. Two MLRS attacks hit Kamianske and Malynivka. 137 artillery strikes targeted Kamianske, Huliaipole, Shcherbaky, Novodanylivka, Mala Tokmachka, Charivne, Solodke, and Preobrazhenka. Four reports were received about damage to apartments and private houses.

According to the General Staff, as of 4pm on 27 July, Ukrainian defenders repelled an attack near Kamianske towards Orikhiv.

ISW reports that russian forces are advancing toward the southern part of Stepnohirsk (west of Orikhiv). According to analysts, further advancement by about five kilometers could allow them to fire artillery at Zaporizhzhia.

Mykolaiv oblast

On the night of 28 July, air defense forces in Mykolaiv oblast neutralized five enemy UAVs of the Shahed type or other types.

Yesterday, 27 July, and today, 28 July, the enemy carried out artillery shelling and twice attacked Kutsurub community with FPV drones. As a result, a fire broke out in a private house, dry grass, and shrubs in the village of Yaselka. No casualties were reported.

On Monday, 28 July, the Day of Remembrance for Ukraine’s Defenders, members of volunteer formations, and civilians who were executed, tortured, or died in captivity, mourning events took place in Mykolaiv oblast. At the Memorial to fallen defenders of the russo-Ukrainian war, those present laid flowers and observed a moment of silence in memory of the prisoners whose lives were cut short by the enemy’s cruel treatment.

Odesa oblast

Border guards destroyed two russian attack drones Shahed-136/131 in Odesa oblast that were heading to strike civilian infrastructure targets.

Kherson oblast

On 28 July, at approximately 7am, the russian army shelled Dniprovskyi district of Kherson with artillery. As a result of the attack, a 70-year-old man sustained a blast injury and shrapnel wound to the leg.

Yesterday, 27 July, the russian army attacked Kherson, Kizomys, Bilozerka, Antonivka, Sofiivka, Shyroka Balka, Stanislav, Chornobaivka, Prydniprovske, Pryozerne, Naddniprianske, Sadove, Zelenivka, Doslidne, Komyshany, Zorivka, and Osokorivka. Police recorded damage to one apartment building, ten private homes, an ambulance station, and four cars. As a result of russian aggression, one person was killed and seven injured, including a police officer.

Last week, the russians attacked Kherson oblast with over 1,700 drones. Nearly 1,300 enemy UAVs were intercepted and destroyed by Ukrainian defenders.

According to the General Staff, as of 4pm on 27 July, Ukrainian units repelled three enemy assaults on the Prydniprovskyi front. Over the past day, the enemy made five attempts to advance. Enemy losses included 35 personnel, 6 artillery systems, 6 vehicles, 1 electronic warfare system, 1 Zala reconnaissance drone, 7 motorcycles, 1 boat, 1 ATV, 1 UAV control antenna, 7 communication antennas, 3 generators, and 1 equipment depot. Additionally, 20 shelters and 1 command-observation post were destroyed.

The National Resistance Center reported that russians transported schoolchildren from the temporarily occupied territory of Kherson oblast to Saint Petersburg under the pretext of participating in a naval parade. These were students of the so-called “naval cadet classes” created in the occupied territory.

The international organization HEKS EPER once again visited Kalynivske community with a humanitarian mission. Volunteers distributed hygiene voucher aid to residents of Kalynivske and Kokhanivka. Nearly 500 vouchers worth 400, 1,600, or 3,600 UAH were given to 345 families.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

In Stara Vyzhivka, the Resilience Center signed a memorandum with the humanitarian department of the Stara Vyzhivka Village Council. Joint work with families, children, educators and internally displaced persons is planned; professional psychological assistance to those who need it; joint events, training, and meetings to strengthen resilience.

Zakarpattia oblast

A shelter for temporary accommodation of internally displaced persons was set up in Berehov. UNHCR Zakarpattia Office, Caritas Czech Republic, Carpathian Region NEEKA, Humanitarian Mission Proliska CF renovated the premises, furnished it with furniture and appliances. UAH 6.5m was allocated from the regional budget for insulation and repair of the building’s facade. Local authorities have equipped the surrounding area. Thanks to the cooperation of SOS Children’s Villages and UNICEF, a modern playground was installed for children.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

As part of the Side by Side: United Communities project, Beryslav City Council of Kherson oblast donated 15 exhibits of the russian-Ukrainian war to Ivano-Frankivsk Museum. Among the donated items are helmets, shell fragments, a burnt book, and a mutilated globe.

Lviv oblast

Youth and adults from the village of Shcheploty wove 3 camouflage nets for defenders. Young residents of Hrabovets-Dulibivska community, Anhelina Letsiuk and Ilana Kostyk, donated UAH 1,115, which they raised on their own, to the volunteer association We are from Ukraine.

Rivne oblast

The RMA reported that since the beginning of the year, 188 children from privileged categories from Rivne oblast have already recovered at Artek, and such trips will continue throughout the year.

Ternopil oblast

39 servicemen will receive UAH 10,000 each to purchase the necessary equipment and technical means. The total amount of assistance is UAH 390,000.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Material assistance for 860 Khmelnytskyi residents was allocated in the amount of UAH 9.6m. In particular, for the rehabilitation of 120 military personnel in the amount of UAH 1.8m and 660 active military personnel in the amount of almost UAH 7m.

Chernivtsi oblast

A simulation training on first aid was held in Chernivtsi. Participants were taught basic life support, cardiovascular resuscitation, and first aid for children.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Ukraine imports Azerbaijani gas via the Trans-Balkan route for the first time. Naftogaz Group has concluded the first agreement on the purchase of Azerbaijani gas with SOCAR Group company SOCAR Energy Ukraine. Also, for the 1st time, a test gas supply is being carried out via the Trans-Balkan corridor along the route BulgariaRomania – Ukrainian border.
