War in Ukraine today: latest news, 26 May, 2024 (photo)

It has been the 823rd day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

On 26 May, the number of combat clashes since the beginning of the day on the fronts of the Russian-Ukrainian war increased to 83. The russian occupiers are making every effort to break through Ukrainian defences. The enemy’s activity towards Kupiansk increased sharply, almost twice during the day. The situation is the same towards Pokrovsk.

Ukrainian troops are taking measures to hold their positions and destroy the enemy’s offensive potential.

There are no significant changes towards Kharkiv. The enemy continues to try to improve the tactical position in the vicinity of Vovchansk and Lyptsi. Near the latter, they hit with three more KABs. In total, the russian occupiers dropped 22 guided aerial bombs in the north of Kharkiv oblast.

Towards Kupiansk, six out of 21 combat clashes continue. Enemy assaults occured in the vicinity of Novoiehorivka, Petropavlivka, Berestove and Hrekivka. The occupiers launched 2 airstrikes near Bohuslavka and Shyikivka.

Towards Lyman, the battle continues in the vicinity of Terny. The situation is under control.

Towards Pokrovsk, there were 31 combat clashes. The enemy, with the support of aviation, directs its main efforts in the areas of Novooleksandrivka, Sokil and Umanske settlements. They also carried out three airstrikes near Skuchne and Novoselivka Persha.

The russian army continues to fire guided aerial bombs and unguided air missiles towards Vremivka, near Staromayorske, Urozhayne and Olhivske. The number of clashes did not change.

In other directions, the situation has not changed significantly.


Oleh Syniehubov, Head of Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, informs that the death toll from the russian attack on May 25, 2024 on the Epicenter construction hypermarket has increased to 16 people. Among them is a 12-year-old girl. 

Mykhailo Fedorov, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Digital Transformation, says that the Government has allocated UAH 1.74 billion for the renewal of the subject “Defense of Ukraine” in schools. Currently, equipment for lessons is being purchased – from shooting simulators and training drones to first-aid kits and medical mannequins.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

Referring to Oleh Syniehubov, Head of the Regional Military Administration, 16 people were killed and 44 people, including 14 women and 30 men, were injured as a result of a hit on a shopping hypermarket. About 200 rescuers were involved in eliminating the consequences of the shelling. Ihor Klymenko, Head of the Ministry of Internal AffairsAs of 09:31am, the fire at the Epitsentr was completely extinguished. For more than 16 hours, rescuers had been extinguishing the fire that arose as a result of russian strikes.

11 of the 16 dead people have already been identified, eight of whom have been identified using DNA tests. Among the dead are a 12-year-old girl and her mother. Eight people are missing. Employees of the State Emergency Service dismantled about 30% of the rubble.

The number of wounded as a result of a russian missile strike on the center of Kharkiv has also increased to 25.

The occupiers hit Bohuslavka, Izium region. A 72-year-old woman was killed and two civilians were injured, including a 9-year-old boy.

Referring to Viktor Kovalenko, Head of Zolochiv village military administration, around 4pm on May 26, the russians hit the village of Ivashky on the border of Kharkiv oblast with at least 11 drones. According to him, a 29-year-old man had his legs cut: at the time of the explosion, the wounded man covered the head of the village, the woman was not injured. The wounds were treated on the spot, the man refused to be hospitalized.

According to the press service of Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office, a 76-year-old man was killed due to russian shelling of Starytsia, Chuhuiv region. A 77-year-old woman was injured on the border of the oblast.

Also, the russian military once again shelled Vovchansk: 63- and 65-year-old women were injured.

The day before, at 7:15pm, the city of Kharkiv, Shevchenkivskyi district, was shelled. 25 people were injured. The total number of damaged buildings is 12 of them: 7 high-rise buildings, a medical facility, a shop, 6 vehicles, non-residential buildings, a building of a research institute.

At 5:03pm, a Grom E-1 missile fired at Kharkiv, Shevchenkivskyi district.  There were no casualties.

At 4pm, 16 people were killed as a result of 2 KABs hitting a hypermarket in Kharkiv. 44 people were injured. A fire broke out in the area of 13,500 sq m. Structural elements of the hypermarket, a furniture store, a shopping center, a bus and a car were damaged.

At 4:04 pm, a UAV hit an open area in Kharkiv, Sloboda district. 

At 7:18pm, 3 people were injured as a result of the shelling of the village of Pechenihy, Chuhuiv region. 

At 6:35pm, S-300 shelling of the village of Pechenihy, Chuhuiv region resulted in private houses being damaged. 1 person was injured. 

At 6:30pm, a missile hit the city of Chuhuiv, as a result of which a private house was damaged, and 1 person injured. 

At 1:30pm, the enemy shelled Kupiansk-Vuzlovyi with artillery. A civilian car and an ambulance were damaged. Five people were injured, including a paramedic.

At 1pm, the village of Prykolotne, Kupiansk region, was shelled. As a result of the hit of two KABs, the roof and windows of the warehouse building for raw materials and two residential buildings located next to each other were damaged.

At 10:05am, as a result of the shelling of the village of Kopanky, Izium region, equipment, a tractor and a crane were damaged in the field.

Towards Kharkiv, there were 13 combat engagements. There is still fighting neat Neskuchne and Starytsia settlements. 

Towards Kupiansk, there were 14 combat engagements. The Defence Forces successfully repelled enemy attacks near Synkivka and Petropavlivka. There is still fighting near Miasozharivka, Druzheliubivka and Nevske. The defence forces performed active fighting with success.

In total, 11,117 people have been evacuated from Chuhuiv, Kharkiv and Bohodukhiv regions.

Donetsk oblast

According to the General Staff, since the beginning of the day on 26 May, russian troops have attacked the positions of Ukrainian troops towards Pokrovsk 14 times.

6 attacks were repelled and 8 battles are ongoing near Novooleksandrivka, Kalynove, Sokil and Nevelske.

Nazar Voloshyn, Spokesman of the Khortytsia operational-strategic group, reported that russian troops are using armoured vehicles near Chasiv Yar and have increased the number of assaults near Bilohorivka but the settlement is currently under the control of the Defence Forces.

Anastasiia Miedviedieva, Spokeswoman of the regional Prosecutor’s Office, informed that russian troops attacked Siversk and Chasiv Yar. As a result, a man and a woman were killed and another woman injured.

Nazar Voloshyn added that the russian army is storming the eastern outskirts of Krasnohorivka in single groups on armoured vehicles. They stormed the settlement twice yesterday. Ukrainian soldiers are holding back the advance of the russian army deep into the town, the situation is under fire control. The settlement is controlled by units of the 59th separate mechanised brigade named after Yakiv Handziuk of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Donetsk police confirmed that on 25 May, the russian army dropped a KAB-250 guided aerial bomb on Kostiantynivka, which did not explode and is to be neutralised.

The operational situation in the oblast as of the morning of 26 May is as follows:

Towards Pokrovsk, three people were injured in Marinka community: 2 in Zoriane and 1 in Krasnohorivka.

Towards Kramatorsk, a person was injured in Lyman. In Kostiantynivka community, private houses in Predtechyne and Stupochky were damaged again.

Towards Bakhmut, in Toretsk community, 1 person was killed and 3 houses damaged in Zalizne; 1 person was injured and 1 house damaged in Shcherbynivka. In Chasiv Yar community, 4 private houses and an apartment building were damaged. 2 houses were damaged in Serebrianka of Siversk community.

In total, russians attacked settlements in Donetsk oblast 10 times over the day. 261 people, including 18 children, were evacuated from the frontline.

Vadym Filashkin, Head of Donetsk Regional Military Administration, reported that yesterday russians killed 1 civilian in Zalizne. Another 5 people in the oblast were injured.

Luhansk oblast

Novoliubivka and Nevske came under fire from rocket artillery. Volleys of barrel artillery and mortars hit Hrekivka, Makiivka and Kuzemivka. The enemy is also actively using aviation. In particular, in the vicinity of Stelmakhivka, the russian army dropped four KABs. Near Raihorodka, unguided air missiles were hit.

Towards Kupiansk, the russians attacked near Miasozharivka, Novoiehorivka, and Nevske.  The total losses of the enemy during the day in this area amounted to 47 people. Enemy MTLBs, two units of motor vehicles, a Murom-P observation station and two ammunition depots were destroyed. Two tanks and one infantry fighting vehicle were also damaged.

In Serebrianka forest, there were no losses of Ukrainian positions. 

The situation remains tense in the area of Bilohorivka, where the enemy is trying to penetrate UKrainian defences. At the same time, Ukrainian defenders carried out a number of measures to strengthen their positions.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

The Ukrainian Women’s Guard held a training session in Kyiv on survival in the city during hostilities and other disasters. Trainers Olena and Oleksandr Biletski taught the participants the principles and rules of survival: how to make survival plans, how to get out of the city and how to escape out of it. Participants received many useful skills and tips on urban survival tools, contents of an emergency bag, survival medicine, food preparation, storage and cooking, self-defence and other knowledge important for survival.

The Kyiv City Council reported that it was preparing for a scenario involving possible prolonged power outages in winter. To prevent such situations, special power generating equipment has been booked.The city plans to set up about 20 locations in Kyiv to provide the capital’s residents with critical resources such as water and electricity. Additional funding of about UAH 4b has been raised from international partners for this purpose.

Employees of Kyiv Metro joined the first aid training sessions conducted by Kyiv Stress Resilience Centre. The training was developed by the Israeli Trauma Coalition and aims to teach self-control, crisis assistance, non-conflict communication in stressful situations and aggressive behaviour. Over 150 employees – specialists who work directly at the stations and are in constant communication with metro passengers – participated in the event.

A joint open training session for amputee football teams was held in Kyiv. The participants included military personnel who lost their limbs in the war. Pokrova Lviv AMP became the first football team of amputee veterans in Ukraine. Currently, there are only three similar clubs, but they all dream of the championship.

A special exhibition was opened in the capital to mark the second anniversary of UNITED24. Everyone can see what the team of the fundraising platform has managed to implement in two years of work – robots that are currently being fundraised for, Magura marine drones, and the entire collection of Ukrainian architectural monuments made of LEGO parts.

On 25 May, a festival dedicated to Europe Day was held in Kyiv. The event, organised by the EU Delegation to Ukraine, brought together civil society activists, journalists and experts. The festival also presented the Europe-Ukraine ceramic panel previously damaged by russian shelling of Kyiv in March 2024. It is restored by children from Fastiv and will go to Brussels.

Zhytomyr oblast

This week, a large-scale training exercise was held in Zhytomyr oblast for firefighting teams from three Ukrainian oblasts.  They practised extinguishing fires using various types of equipment. In particular, a fire tank that can be used to pave the way for fire trucks even in mined areas was presented.

Zhytomyr RMA reported that since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, foresters in Zhytomyr oblast have donated 85,000 cubic metres of timber, 20,000 litres of fuel and 136 pieces of equipment to the Defence Forces. This timber is part of the deeply-entrenched defence lines and fortifications in the north of Zhytomyr and Kyiv oblasts, as well as fortifications in Mykolaiv, Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk oblasts.

A training on psychological support for educators was held in Zhytomyr. The training consisted of theoretical and practical parts. The main goal of the event was to provide participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to maintain their own and their students’ psycho-emotional state.

Sumy oblast

Mayor Yuriy Zarko infirmed that in the morning, the russian army shelled the centre of Bilopillia with artillery and Grad multiple rocket launchers. The community is experiencing problems with electricity supply, and private houses have been damaged. According to the mayor, the russians targeted civilian infrastructure.

The RMA reported that in total, at night and in the morning of 26 May, russians fired 10 times at the border areas and settlements of Sumy oblast. There were 86 attacks with artillery, mortars and Grad multiple rocket launchers. Mykolaivka, Yunakivka, Myropillia, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Shalyhyne and Druzhbivka communities were shelled.

On 25 May, the russian military fired 34 times in Sumy oblast. There were 174 attacks with various types of weapons. 10 border communities were shelled: Khotin, Bilopillia, Krasnopillia, Myropillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Nova Sloboda, Esman, Shalyhyne, Seredyna-Buda, and Znob-Novhorodske. 

Chernihiv oblast

According to the State Border Guard Service, russian troops struck two border communities in Chernihiv oblast, resulting in 22 explosions. Novhorod-Siverskyi community: 6 mortar strikes in the vicinity of Kolos. Semenivka community: 16 strikes from mortars and barrel artillery in the vicinity of the settlements of Prohres, Karpovychi and Leonivka.

As reported by the North Operational Command, on 25 May, russian troops launched a missile strike in the area near Chernihiv. As a result of the attack, an outbuilding was damaged. There was no information about the dead or wounded among the local population.

On 12 May, 41-year-old Vitalii Krutyi, Director of Mena Museum of Local Lore named after Volodymyr Pokotylo, was killed in action in Kharkiv oblast. The researcher served in the border troops since December 2023. Before the russian invasion, he lived by work, scientific papers and conferences, researched the history of his native land and conducted bicycle tours in his native Mena region. Near his house in Diahova, Vitalii created an arboretum with his own hands, in which he grew more than 200 species of coniferous trees from all over the world – children from the local school visit this park to study conifers in science and biology lessons.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Council, reported that 11 Shahed drones were shot down over Dnipropetrovsk oblast by Ukrainian defenders at night. They were destroyed in Synelnykove, Kamianske, Pavlohrad, Novomoskovsk and Nikopol regions. During the night, russians attacked Nikopol region 8️ times. They launched 4 kamikaze drones and about three dozen artillery shells. They hit the region’s center, Marhanets and Chervonohryhorivka communities. In Nikopol, 6 multi-storey buildings, 3 private houses, a market, a supermarket, a shop, an educational and medical institution, 4 garages, an outbuilding, a car and 2 power lines were damaged. According to updated information, 2 more private houses and a gas pipeline were damaged in the evening attacks in the region’s center.

There were about a dozen attacks in the Nikopol region. The occupiers fired with kamikaze drones and artillery at the region’s center, Myrove and Marhanets communities. In Nikopol, a 69-year-old woman was injured and hospitalized in moderate condition. 25 houses, 17 outbuildings, a shop, a private enterprise, 3 cars, a truck and a minibus, an unused building, 2 greenhouses, 4 power lines, a dozen solar panels and a gas pipeline were damaged.

Vinnytsia oblast

Serhii Borzov, Head of the RMA, reports that at night in Vinnytsia oblast, 3 four-storey residential buildings, 7 private houses and 6 cars were damaged due to the fall of enemy drone fragments in Zhmerynka. 3 people were injured and 40 people were evacuated from their apartments.

Kirovohrad oblast

According to the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine at night, a russian UAV in Kirovohrad oblast was destroyed. 

More than 50 participants of the Do Not Be Silent! Captivity Kills! rally gathered in Kropyvnytskyi. The soldiers’ relatives came to Maidan Heroes Square to remind of Ukrainian captives.

Poltava oblast

At night, the Air Defense Forces shot down air targets launched by russian federation’s military over Poltava oblast.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Yesterday, the occupiers struck Zaporizhzhia oblast 426 times. 149 UAVs attacked Huliaipole, Levadne, Robotyne, Mala Tokmachka, Malynivka, and Novoandriivka. 24 MLRS attacks hit Robotyne and Mala Tokmachka. 253 artillery shellings targeted the territories of Huliaipole, Mala Tokmachka, Novoandriivka, Robotyne, Levadne, Malynivka, Prymorske, and Chervonodniprovka. Three reports of housing destruction were received.

It is reported that the occupiers conducted 4 assaults towards Orikhiv, including 1 assault in the area of Staromaiorske, 1 in the area of Robotyne, and 2 in the area of Novoandriivka. They were unsuccessful.

At night, air defense forces destroyed 5 Shahed-131/136 drones in Zaporizhzhia. In total, the enemy deployed 19 drones in the attack.

Mykolaiv oblast

On the night of 26 May, the enemy directed Shahed-131/136 kamikaze drones towards the southern regions. Air defense forces destroyed 19 drones, including 3 in Mykolaiv oblast. As a result of the destruction of one of the drones, the blast wave damaged the windows of a preschool educational institution in the region.

On 25 May, the enemy twice shelled the waters of Ochakiv community with artillery. There were no casualties.

On 26 May, another Don’t Be Silent, Captivity Kills rally took place in Mykolaiv, with about 150 citizens participating. People came out with posters and flags to remind about the prisoners of war and those considered missing.

Odesa oblast

There is one submarine on combat duty in the Black Sea. According to the South Operational Command, it is likely not a carrier of cruise missiles.

During the night of 26 May, the southern air defense forces shot down five Shahed-131/136 strike UAVs. According to the South Air Command, one of them was destroyed in Odesa oblast.

Kherson oblast

Yesterday, the settlements of Lvove, Havrylivka, Veletenske, Respublikanets, Stanislav, Komyshany, Antonivka, Poniativka, Chornobaivka, Beryslav, Vysoke, Ivanivka, Tiahynka, and the city of Kherson were under enemy attacks. Eleven private houses, critical and industrial infrastructure facilities, farm buildings, a warehouse, and a private car were damaged. 4 people were injured.

Later, Kherson RMA reported another casualty. A resident of Chornobaivka sustained mine-explosive and craniocerebral injuries, as well as a concussion, as a result of the night attack.

As of 17:00, 26 May, the number of combat clashes in the Prydniprovskyi direction increased to four. Earlier, the General Staff reported that the occupiers dropped eight KAB bombs at Beryslav, Vysoke, Tiahynka, and Veletenske.

It is reported that the enemy conducted 11 unsuccessful assaults in the area of the village of Krynky on the left bank of the Dnipro River, in the temporarily occupied Kherson oblast. After suffering losses, they retreated to their initial positions. The Southern Defense Forces eliminated 112 occupiers and destroyed 10 units of weapons and military equipment. Six field supply buildups were also destroyed.

Volunteers from Kherson regional organization of the Red Cross, in cooperation with the World Food Programme of the United Nations, distributed food packages to residents of Kherson. Each package, weighing over 13 kg, contains long-term storage food products, including canned meat, pasta, oil, and sugar.

ADRA Ukraine volunteers visited Tiahynka community on a humanitarian mission. Despite the danger, the charity workers delivered and distributed 1,200 food packages to the residents.

This week, the Proliska Kherson humanitarian center team visited Bilozirka community and Dnipro district of Kherson after the shelling. Volunteers provided building kits for quick repairs and essential goods to the residents.

Lithuanian volunteers delivered transport vehicles to Dariivka and Bilozerka communities. The vehicles will be used for humanitarian and evacuation needs.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

Lutsk City Council reported that the community sent Mavic 3T, Mavic 3 and FPV drones to the 63th Separate Mechanised Brigades, the 13th Separate Airborne Assault Brigades and the 95th Separate Airborne Assault Brigades.

Zakarpattia oblast

This week, the Owl’s Nest Humanitarian Aid Center provided IDPs registered in Uzhgorod with 30 packages with necessary things for children under 1 year old, 50 bags with grocery sets and 55 packages with hygiene kits. During the week, volunteers gave out clothes, shoes, bed linen and dishes (2,300 items) from the PDUM Partnerschaft Deutschland-Ukraine/Moldova e. V., Luftfahrt ohne Grenzen / Wings of Help eV and other benefactors.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

In Ivano-Frankivsk, a  meeting dedicated to veteran’s return to the workplace was held within the framework of the All-Ukrainian mental health program How Are You?, initiated by Olena Zelenska, the First Lady of Ukraine. The event brought together employment service specialists, employers, and psychologists. They discussed adaptation after the front, physical and mental recovery and employment of veterans. 

Lviv oblast

In Lviv, free swimming training is held for servicemen and family members of fallen defenders of Ukraine. As of today, 70 soldiers and family members have already tried taking advantage of this opportunity.

A memorial plaque to Ihor Vavrin, gunner of the Airborne Assault Detachment of the Airborne Assault Platoon of the Airborne Assault Company of the Airborne Assault Battalion of the Military Unit A2582, was installed in Sambir region. He was killed on 15 August, 2023 near the village of Verbove, Zaporizhzhia oblast.

Junior sergeants Andrii Kukhta, Volodymyr Morikon and Taras Ihnatovych, from Chervonohrad region, were awarded the Cross of the Brave badge by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Rivne oblast

In Rivne oblast, the network of medical facilities where psychological assistance will be provided is being expanded. 39 medical institutions of the oblast have contracts with the NSHU. In total, there are 103 places where this service is provided. Also, 1,300 medics were trained under the special WHO program.

Ternopil oblast

Ternopil City Council reported that on the facade of the Center for Vocational and Technical Education, were installed a memorial plaque to Hero Terebiy Andrii and a memorial stele to Oleh Bakhmach, Bereziy Nazarii, Yevhen Danylkiv, Ivas Mykhailo, Mykola Krushelnytskyi, Kushcha Odeksandr, Mykola Murmil, Vasyl Temirkhanov, and Terebiy Andrii .

Khmelnytskyi oblast

At night, during an air alert, air defence forces shot down 6 UAVs and 1 missile within the oblast. As a result of an enemy attack, 3,000 subscribers were disconnected from electricity in one of the cities of the oblast. Currently, all consumers are connected to the power grid. Relevant services were working at the scene. There was no information about injuries and destruction.

In the morning, during an air raid, as a result of an enemy attack, an explosion was heard in one of the regions of the oblast. Air defence forces were working. There were no casualties or damage.

Chernivtsi oblast

The 9th workshop Women’s Leadership and Family Business in Times of Challenges was held in Chernivtsi. The event included presentations from leading business and leadership experts, training sessions on developing your own business strategies, useful tips and networking.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, stated that over 80 countries have already confirmed their participation in the Peace Summit, which will be held in Switzerland on 15-16 June.

The German Foreign Ministry reported that their initiative to strengthen Ukrainian air defence has already raised almost €1bn. Great Britain, France, Spain, Romania, Belgium and Lithuania joined the initiative.

As part of the information campaign Stolen Voices, which is part of the action plan of President Volodymyr Zelensky Bring Kids Back UA, a visit of the Ukrainian delegation to Argentina took place. It was headed by Daria Herasymchuk, an adviser to the President of Ukraine on Children’s Rights and Child Rehabilitation. Argentina plans to join the International Coalition for the Return of Ukrainian Children.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, met with Malgozhata Kidawa-Blonska, Marshal of the Polish Senate. Support for Ukraine was discussed.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, had a phone conversation with Alassane Ouattara, President of Ivory Coast. They discussed bilateral relations and international cooperation.

The state of Hesse in Germany introduced Ukrainian as a 2nd foreign language in schools. This was done to support 20,000 Ukrainian students who are in the region due to the russian invasion. Students from other countries will also be able to study Ukrainian.

The Congress of the European Federation of Journalists expressed solidarity with Ukrainian journalists who are in russian captivity. Representatives of journalistic unions of Norway, France, Italy, Germany, Denmark and other European countries are holding in their hands a photo of Iryna Levchenko, Viktoriia Roshchynoi, Serhii Tsihipa, Vladyslav Yesipenko, Server Mustafayev, Hennady Osmak, Iryna Danylovych and join the call of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine for immediate their release.
