War in Ukraine today: latest news, 25 March 2025 (photo)

It has been the 1126 th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

Russian invaders continue to storm the positions of Ukrainian defenders. In return, the Ukrainian Defence Forces inflict significant losses in manpower and equipment.

In total, 105 combat engagements have taken place.

Borderline settlements, in particular Popivka, Riasne, Verkhnia Pozhnia in Sumy oblast and Oleksandrivka in Kharkiv oblast, suffered from shelling from the territory of the russian Federation.

Petrushivka, Uhrody, Krasnopillia, Prokhody and Turia in Sumy oblast were hit by air strikes.

Towards Kharkiv, the enemy attacked the positions of the Defence Forces once in the direction of Kamianka. Zolochiv was subjected to a CAB air strike.

Towards Kupiansk, the enemy attacked the positions of our troops once near Zahryzove, the attack was repelled.

Towards Lyman, the invading army attacked 12 times near Yampolivka, Kopanky and towards Novomykhailivka, Nove, Katerynivka, with five engagements still ongoing.

Towards Siversk, our troops repelled four enemy attacks in the areas of Bilohorivka, Verkhnokamianske and Ivan-Darivka, two combat engagements are still ongoing.

Towards Kramatorsk, the enemy attacked the positions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces once in the direction of Predtechyne.

Towards Toretsk, the enemy attacked a total of 17 times in the Toretsk area and near Dyliivka and Krymske. Seven combat engagements are currently underway.

Towards Pokrovsk, the occupiers have made 43 attempts to push our defenders from their positions in the areas of Sukha Balka, Kalynove, Oleksandropil, Zelene Pole, Yelyzavetivka, Kotlyne, Udachne, Preobrazhenka, Andriivka, Bohdanivka and in the directions of Novoserhiivka and Kotliarivka since the beginning of the day. The defence forces are holding back the enemy’s offensive and repelled 39 attacks, four firefights are still ongoing. The enemy’s losses are being clarified. Serhiivka, Sukhyi Yar, Pokrovsk and Chunyshyne came under air strikes.

Towards Novopavlivka, the enemy attacked 16 times near Rozlyv, Dniproenerhiia and Kostiantynopil, six of the attacks are still ongoing.

Towards Huliaipole, the enemy did not conduct any offensive actions, however, they conducted air strikes in the areas of Ternove, Novopil, Novodarivka, Huliaipole and Zaliznychne.

Towards Orikhiv, the enemy is trying to advance towards Lobkove, and two firefights are ongoing. Mala Tokmachka came under air strikes from KABs and NARs.

One firefight took place towards Kherson. In addition, the enemy carried out air strikes in the areas of Vesele, Oleksandrivka and Dudchany.

In the operational zone in Kursk oblast, the Ukrainian Defence Forces repelled six attacks by russian invaders over the past day, and another battle is ongoing. The enemy carried out two air strikes, dropping three unmanned aerial vehicles, and fired over 110 times, including five times from multiple launch rocket systems.

There were no significant changes in the situation on other frontline areas.


The Ministry of Social Policy of Ukraine, reported that over the past year, 82,028 people with the status of combatants, people with disabilities as a result of war, and war veterans received social services. In total, they received over 160,000 social services. The most popular services include psychological assistance, adaptation and support services, inpatient and home care, short-term accommodation, representation of interests, transport services, and counselling.

More than 37,000 family members of fallen servicemen and women have benefited from social services. They have been provided with more than 69,000 services, including social adaptation, information and counselling.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

Frontline

The RMA reported that towards Kharkiv, the enemy tried to break through the defensive lines of our defenders three times in the direction of Vovchansk.

Towards Kupiansk there were 6 attacks yesterday. Our defenders stopped the enemy’s assault in the areas of Petropavlivka, Stepova Novoselivka and Zahryzove.

Attacks

The RMA reported that at 2:28am, the russians attacked Zolochiv village. As a result of the shelling, grass and reeds were burning on an area of 3 hectares in an open area.

In total, over the past day, the occupiers used 5 UAVs and 18 UAVs of various types against civilians in Kharkiv oblast. The shelling damaged 11 private houses, 5 trucks and 3 cars.

Yesterday at 9:40pm, russians attacked Izium. A Shahed UAV hit the territory of a non-operational enterprise. The shelling caused a fire on the previous area of 8,400 sq m, one car and 3 trucks on the area of 100 sq m and grass outside the enterprise on the area of 300 sq m. 2 civilian non-residential infrastructures, a workshop, 2 cars, 2 trucks and a cargo semi-trailer were damaged. There were no casualties. The shelling also damaged railway contact lines.

At 9:09pm, russians attacked Zalyman. As a result of the shelling, grass burned on an area of 2 hectares.

At 8:14pm, russians attacked the Industrial district of Kharkiv. A decoy UAV was spotted on the playground. There were no casualties.

At 4:54pm, russians attacked Stara Pokrovka village. A Geranium-2 UAV was spotted in the open area. There were no casualties.

At 9:42am, russians attacked Semeniv Yar village. A UAV of unknown type was spotted in the open area.

At 9:14am, russians attacked Kupiansk. An FPV drone hovered on a tree. There were no casualties.   

At 8:08am, russians attacked Kupiansk. After the shelling of FAB-250, 3 private houses were damaged and an outbuilding was destroyed. There were many casualties and fires.

At 7:16am, russians attacked Slatyne. As a result of the enemy shelling, preliminary CAB, 3 houses were damaged.

At 7:12am, russians attacked Prudianka village. A house was damaged as a result of hostile shelling, preliminary by a CAB.

Other

Due to the intense shelling, evacuation measures from Kupiansk and Borova are being intensified. So far, 39 people have been evacuated, including two children. Nine people have been temporarily accommodated in Kharkiv dormitories, while the rest have found accommodation in the city on their own. A total of 27,838 people have been evacuated from 16 communities in Kharkiv oblast, including 2,380 children and 301 people with reduced mobility.

Donetsk oblast

Frontline

The Airborne Systems Forces reported that the Defence forces have hit a North Korean Koksan self-propelled artillery system in Donetsk oblast. This is the fifth DPRK-made system to be damaged by the Ukrainian military in a month.

Ivan Petrychak, a spokesman for the 24th Separate Mechanised Brigade, stated that the russian army has increased the number of fibre-optic drones in the urban battles for Chasiv Yar, and FPVs are also used in villages near the city.

Attacks

At around 6:30am, russian troops shelled Kostiantynivka with cannon artillery. The attack damaged three private houses.

Russians shelled 6 settlements in Donetsk oblast – there is a wounded man. Over the past day, police recorded 3,824 hostile attacks along the frontline and in the residential sector.  Russian troops attacked the towns of Kostyantynivka, Lyman, Pokrovsk, and the villages of Rai Oleksandrivka, Serhiivka, and Tikhonivka. 16 civilian objects were damaged, including 12 residential buildings.

The occupiers attacked Lyman with a Molniya-2 UAV, injuring a civilian and damaging a private house, a car, and a power line.

Russia dropped four FAB-250 bombs on Mykolaivka community: 7 private houses and a power line were damaged in Tikhonivka, and an administrative building in Rai Oleksandrivka.

In Pokrovsk, 2 apartment buildings were damaged by shelling. In Serhiivka, Pokrovsk region, 2 private houses were damaged by a Molniya-2 UAV strike.

In addition, information about a wounded civilian in Pokrovsk who suffered from a russian FPV drone strike on 23 March was established.

Three people were reported dead as a result of russian shelling of Rozlyv village in Volnovakha region. The invaders attacked the village on 21 March, killing men aged 38 to 70.

Other

Andrii Besedin, Head of Kupiansk City Military Administration, reported that approximately 2,900 civilians live in Kupiansk community, of which less than 1,800 live in the town. More than 800 people remain on the left bank of the Oskil River. More than 80% of Kupiansk, which is located 2km from the front line, has been damaged or destroyed by russian shelling. 

Luhansk oblast

The RMA reported that towards Siversk, the invaders tried to advance in Bilohorivka. Yesterday russians used 178 unmanned aerial vehicles in the area of our responsibility. Artillery support was used 12 times.

More than 8,000km of water supply networks in the so-called “luhansk people’s republic” are in a state of emergency. Currently, 10,000 km are being maintained by the invaders. Thus, the system’s wear and tear exceeds 80%. During the 11 years of occupation of a large part of the Luhansk region, the Russians did virtually nothing there, which led to the current state of affairs. Currently, only 2.5% of the required repairs have been made. About 3,000km of water supply network are in urgent need of replacement. About 260,000 local residents are still without water supply due to the accident that occurred early last week. The russians’ next promise is 1 April.

More than 12,000 school students and students in the occupied Luhansk oblast are undergoing military training under the tutelage of russian army soldiers, who are passing on their combat skills to the youngsters. These children took part in an updated version of the military-patriotic game Zarnitsa 2.0. The organisers were russian propaganda organisations – the Yunarmiya public movement and the Warrior military sports centre. Most schoolchildren and students were involved in this event in Dovzhansk, Sorokyne and Alchevsk.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

The RMA reported that on the night of 25 March, russian drones attacked Kyiv oblast. As a result of the shelling, warehouses caught fire in Fastiv and Boryspil regions. The fires have been extinguished.

In the evening and at night, 10 enemy UAVs were spotted on the outskirts of the capital. The aerial targets did not reach the city, were destroyed by air defence systems or locally lost. Over the past 24 hours, air alert was announced in the capital once and lasted almost 2.5 hours.

Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klychko announced that the capital’s community had handed over 2,000 UAVs to the soldiers of the 5th Separate Kyiv Assault Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. UAH 100m was allocated from the city budget for this equipment. This year, the Kyiv City Council has already allocated over UAH 5bn to support the Security and Defence Forces.

Postage stamps dedicated to the 11th anniversary of the National Guard of Ukraine were cancelled in Kyiv. The stamps, created as part of Ukrposhta’s “Own stamp” project, reflect the activities of the NGU and the heroism of the units.

Zhytomyr oblast

Mykola Garbar, a resident of Kherson oblast who was abducted and tortured to death by russian invaders, was recently buried in his native village in Zhytomyr oblast. According to Ukrinform, in early September 2024, the remains of Mykola Garbar, who was abducted by the russian military in August 2022, were found near the village of Mylove in Kherson oblast. The occupiers tortured the 55-year-old man, breaking his arms and legs and fracturing his skull. 

Mayor Mykola Borovets said that Zviahel community is completing a project to build and equip shelters for local educational institutions. A new shelter for students of gymasium №6 is currently being completed. Shelters for gymnasiums №2 and №9 are 60 and 80% complete, respectively. All three facilities are scheduled to be commissioned in 2025.

Sumy oblast

According to updated information, as a result of the russian missile strike on a residential area in Sumy on 24 March, 101 people were affected. Medical assistance was sought by 78 adults and 23 children. Currently, 14 adults and 16 children are receiving inpatient treatment. One adult and one child are in a stable but serious condition.

Emergency restoration work is ongoing in Sumy. According to preliminary data from local authorities, 26 buildings of various purposes and forms of ownership have been damaged, including three schools, a kindergarten, a hospital, and 16 residential buildings.

During night and morning, russians carried out 33 shelling attacks on border areas and settlements in Sumy oblast, resulting in 130 explosions. The attacks targeted Sad, Stepanivka, Yunakivka, Myropilia, Krasnopillia, and Esman communities. As a result of shelling, private houses in Myropillia and Stepanivka communities were damaged. 

In the skies over Sumy oblast, Ukrainian air defence forces shot down 10 enemy Shaheds. Since the beginning of the year, air defence units in the oblast have destroyed 787 russian UAVs.

Over the past day, 24 March, russian forces carried out 52 shellings in Sumy oblast, with a total of 123 strikes recorded. The enemy used mortars (43 explosions), MLRS (18 explosions), artillery (22 explosions), a missile strike (1 explosion), FPV-drone attacks (17 explosions), launched GABs (19 explosions), and dropped explosive devices from UAVs (3 explosions). Twelve communities came under enemy fire: Sumy, Khotin, Yunakivka, Myropilia, Bilopillia, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Nova Slobidka, Esman, Shalyhyne, Seredyna-Buda, and Znob-Novhorod.

As a result of russian shelling on 24 March: in Esman community, one person was injured; in Velyka Pysarivka community, a civilian vehicle was damaged; in Shalyhyne community, a vehicle was damaged and two civilians were injured; in Seredyna-Buda community, private houses were damaged; and in Znob-Novhorodske community, a private house was damaged.

Sumy Regional Military Administration reported that as a result of the missile strike on Sumy, more than 100 people were affected. Thirty apartment buildings, 15 private houses, non-residential and office premises, educational and medical institutions, as well as seven private cars, were damaged.

Chernihiv oblast

Chernihiv Border Detachment reported that in Chernihiv oblast, russian forces attacked Semenivka community during the day on 24 March. A total of 29 strikes were recorded targeting the villages of Leonivka, Yanzhulivka, Tymonovychi, Prohres, and Medvedivka. The enemy carried out shelling by mortars (15 explosions) and barrel artillery (13 explosions), and dropped an explosive device from a UAV (1 explosion).

Oleksandr Seliverstov, head of the Novhorod-Siverskyi Refional Military Administration, informed that in Novhorod-Siverskyi region in 2025, an increase in the radius of territories under constant attack by russian forces has been recorded. Previously, the affected area extended up to five kilometres from the border with russia, but now it covers a 10-kilometre zone. Additionally, in the first three months of 2025, the number of russian shellings has increased by 30% compared to the corresponding period in 2024.

According to Chernihiv Police, in Chernihiv oblast, police bomb disposal experts neutralised the warhead of a russian UAV. It had become lodged in a tree after being shot down by Ukrainian Defence Forces in Nizhyn region.

In Chernihiv, an inspection of a five-story building on Kozatska Street, damaged by a russian UAV strike on 15 March, is ongoing. As a result of the strike, two apartments in the building were destroyed, and 12 were damaged. According to the City Council, repairs to the building can begin after the conclusions of the examination are received. During a meeting of the city’s executive committee, a preliminary allocation of UAH 5m. was made for the repair of the building damaged by the russians.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

From the evening until late at night, russian forces continued shelling Nikopol region, by artillery, Grad multiple launch rocket systems and kamikaze drones. The attacks targeted Nikopol, Pokrov and Myrove communities. In Nikopol, a drone strike damaged an apartment building and 2 vehicles.

The russian forces struck civilians in Nikopol region again. In the regional centre, a 63-year-old man was killed in an artillery attack. In total, around 20 attacks were recorded across the region. The enemy used kamikaze drones and artillery, targeting Nikopol, Pokrov and Marhanets communities. 5 private houses, 6 outbuildings and a gas pipeline were damaged.

Kirovohrad oblast

​Ukrainian air defence was active overnight. There were no casualties or damage reported. 

In Bobrynets, a memorial ceremony was held for 43-year-old Junior Sergeant Mykola Rozmyrytsia, who was killed on 17 March 2025, in an enemy artillery strike near Novomarkove village, Kramatorsk region, Donetsk oblast.

42-year-old soldier Kostiantyn Zubritskyi from Pomichna, Novoukrainka region, was released from russian captivity on 19 March after being held for nearly 3 years. During captivity, he lost 40 kilograms and suffered severe vision problems. He is now undergoing rehabilitation.

Poltava oblast

Volodymyr Kohut, Head of the RMA, reported that in Myrhorod region, drone debris damaged a hangar at a local enterprise, causing a fire. 2 workers were injured and 1 hospitalised with suspected blast trauma.

Poltava paid tribute to Yevhen Posokha, who was killed on 14 March 2025, while carrying out a combat mission in Kursk oblast, russia. And, Serhii Nechai, who died in a hospital on 21 March 2025.

In Myrhorod, a memorial plaque was unveiled in honour of Hero of Ukraine Oleksandr Fedorchenko. His wife, Kateryna Fedorchenko, was presented with the Honorary Citizen of Myrhorod Territorial Community award, which Oleksandr received posthumously.

Cherkasy oblast

Ihor Taburets, Head of the RMA, informed that Ukrainian air defence destroyed 10 enemy attack drones over Cherkasy oblast. There were no casualties or damage reported.

A memorial ceremony was held in Zhashkiv for 26-year-old defender Yevhenii Rubashevskyi, call sign Ruben. He returned home on the shield on 24 March and was honoured with a living corridor before being laid to rest in the local cemetery. Yevhenii was killed on 20 March in Donetsk oblast.

28-year-old soldier Yurii Roha from Cherkasy oblast was posthumously awarded the Order For Courage III Class. The award was presented to his mother. Yurii fell in battle on 12 March while performing a combat mission.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Ivan Fedorov, Head of Zaporizhzhia RMA, reported that the russian military shelled Stepnohirsk, frontline town, striking residential areas.

As reported by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the enemy is attempting to advance toward Lobkove in Orikhiv region, with 2 ongoing clashes in the area. Mala Tokmachka was hit by airstrikes with guided bombs and unguided rockets.

Ivan Fedorov, Head of the RMA, said that around 7am, russian forces attacked Zaporizhzhia. Preliminary reports indicate no casualties. The consequences of the attack are being assessed.

A 58-year-old woman and a 30-year-old man were wounded in a russian shelling of Zaporizhzhia oblast. In one of the villages, a private house was destroyed, outbuildings and a car damaged.

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Defence Forces repelled 2 enemy attacks in Orikhiv region on 24 March, with clashes taking place near Lobkove.

Ivan Fedorov, Head of the RMA, stated that on 24 March, the russian military launched 356 attacks on 15 towns and villages in Zaporizhzhia oblast. This included 21 airstrikes targeting Kamianske, Orikhiv, Mala Tokmachka, Bilohiria, Malynivka, Novodarivka and Huliaipole.

Mykolaiv oblast

According to Mykolaiv RMA, on the night of 25 March, Ukrainian air defence shot down 2 Shahed 131/136 drones over Mykolaiv oblast.

On 24 March, russian forces attacked Kutsurub community twice by FPV drones. There were no injuries reported.

Odesa oblast

Referring to the Ukrainian Navy, another naval mine washed ashore on Odesa coastal area. It was neutralised by military personnel.

As of the morning of 25 March, the russian occupation army continued to keep one warship in the Black Sea, which is armed with cruise missiles.

Kherson oblast

The RMA reported that in Kherson, russian forces attacked a cyclist with a drone. The 55-year-old man was hospitalised with blast trauma, concussion and shrapnel wounds to his shoulder and leg.

The russian troops shelled Korabelnyi district of Kherson in the morning, deliberately targeting residential areas. The attack damaged walls, roofs, fences, windows and doors of multiple houses.

Around 4am, a russian aircraft dropped a guided bomb on Dudchany in Kherson oblast, followed by an artillery strike. The cultural centre and an administrative building were damaged. No casualties have been reported so far.

Roman Mrochko, Head of Kherson CMA, said that in Dniprovskyi district of Kherson, a 19-year-old man sustained blast injuries and shrapnel wounds to his legs in a russian drone attack.

Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of the RMA, stated that on 24 March, 1 person was killed and 6 wounded due to russian attacks on Kherson oblast. The russian military struck 26 settlements and launched a ballistic missile strike on Kherson oblast. 4 private houses, garages and a car were damaged.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

Over the past 2 weeks, the military has received a Mitsubishi L200, 4 EW Shelters, DJI Mavic 3T, 28 DJI Mavic 3PRO, 8 EcoFlow, Starlink, 80 FPV drones, 5 inverter generators, 10 DJI Mavic 3 Intelligent Flight Battery batteries, 20 VTX RuchFpv MAX Solo radio transmitters, 25 ELRS receivers, and a UNA-3 CSFE navigation module with a magnetometer in the housing from Lutsk community.

Zakarpattia oblast

20 medics from 8 medical institutions of the oblast underwent internships in 2 leading medical institutions in Poland during February-March – the Voivodeship Specialized Hospital named after Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski and the Neuropsychiatric Hospital named after Prof. Mieczyslaw Kaczynski. This was made possible thanks to the signed Agreement on Cooperation between Zakarpattia Regional Council, Zakarpattia Regional State Administration and the Lublin Voivodeship.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Ivano-Frankivsk community sent 30 FPV drones and electronic warfare equipment to the 3rd Battalion Svoboda by the 4th Rapid Response Brigade of the National Guard Rubizh.

Lviv oblast

The 45th Separate Artillery Brigade received a semi-trailer for transporting military equipment to the front thanks to the Safe Lviv Oblast program.

Nazar Karpenko, rifleman-medic from Sheptytsky region, was awarded with the III degree For Courage Order (posthumously). He was killed in April 2024 while performing a combat mission in the Novomykhailivka, Donetsk oblast.

Rivne oblast

Sappers and medics of the Main Directorate of the State Emergency Service in Rivne oblast, consisting of 3 pyrotechnic and one medical crew, set out to perform official tasks for humanitarian demining of liberated territories of Kharkiv oblast. This is not the first rotation since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Rivne pyrotechnicians and medics to liberate the territory of Ukraine from the enemy.

Ternopil oblast

11 defenders of Ternopil community will receive a one-time cash grant for treatment and rehabilitation. The military will receive UAH 15,000 each.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

584 active military personnel from Khmelnytskyi community will receive material assistance. The total amount is UAH 5.2m.

Chernivtsi oblast

A volleyball tournament among men was held in Vyzhnytsia region, dedicated to the memory of Ruslan Senchukm fallen Hero Captain of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, volunteer, Commander of an Anti-Tank Missile Company of Chernivtsi 82nd Separate Airborne Assault Brigade. He was killed on 6 January near the village of Robotyne, Zaporizhzhia. Captain Senchuk Ruslan, soldier of the Military Unit A2582, was laid to rest on 8 February 2024 in the city of Vyzhnytsia.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Denmark will allocate €130m in guarantees for its companies that are ready to invest in Ukraine’s defense industry. The Danish government announced the introduction of a new state guarantee, under which the state, through the Danish Export-Investment Fund, will cover up to 70% of investments by Danish companies in Ukrainian defense enterprises.

Finland launches the New Ukraine support program with a budget of €660m. Priority procurement — in accordance with the critical needs of Ukraine and the production capabilities of companies.

In Lithuania, citizens and businesses raised over €5.6m in donations to purchase UAVs and electronic warfare equipment for Ukraine.
