It has been the 1278  th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

russian invaders continue to storm the positions of Ukrainian defenders. On August 24, there were 85 combat clashes on the frontline.

Border settlements affected by shelling from the territory of the russian federation include Stara Huta, Novovasylivka, Zarichne, Sorokyne, Bachivsk, Malushyne, Brusky, Bunyakyne, Hirky in Sumy oblast; Halahanivka, Bleshnia, Liskivshchyna, Huta Studenetska, Mykolaivka, Zaliznyi Mist, Mykhalchyna Sloboda, Hremiach, Kliusy in Chernihiv oblast. Airstrikes hit Nova Huta and Stara Huta in Sumy oblast.

Towards Northern Sloboda and Kursk, the Defense Forces repelled one offensive action and four more combat clashes are still ongoing. The enemy also launched 11 airstrikes, using 18 guided bombs, and carried out 98 attacks.

Towards Kupiansk, the enemy tried to advance five times near Kupiansk, Zapadne, Holubivka and Zelenyi Hai. One combat engagement is ongoing.

Towards Lyman, the invading army attacked ten times near the settlements of Hrekivka, Ridkodub, Karpivka and towards the settlements of Dronivka, Shandryholove, and Serebrianka. Three combat engagements are ongoing.

Towards Siversk, the enemy made 11 attempts to advance in the vicinity of Serebrianka, Fedorivka, Viimka, Pereizne and towards Siversk.

Towards Toretsk, the enemy made one attack in the vicinity of ​​Shcherbynivka.

Towards Pokrovsk, the invaders made 31 attempts to push Ukrainian defenders from the occupied positions in the vicinity of the settlements of Zatyshok, Nykanorivka, Nove Shakhove, Novoekonomichne, Myroliubivka, Mykolaivka, Sukhetske, Lysivka, Zvirove and towards the settlements of Rodynske, Novoukrainka, Chervonyi Lyman, and Pokrovsk. The defense forces are holding back the enemy’s onslaught and repelled 27 attacks. Four combat clashes are still ongoing. The enemy’s losses are being clarified.

Towards Novopavlivka, the aggressor attacked twelve times near the settlements of Zelene Pole, Maliivka, Voskresenka, Shevchenko, Temyrivka – towards the settlements of Novomykolaivka and Komyshuvakha. Six combat clashes are still ongoing.

Towards Southern Sloboda, Kramatorsk, Huliaipole, Orikhiv and Kherson, there were no active enemy offensive actions. There were several airstrikes in the vicinity of the settlements of Bilohiria, Naddniprianske, and Lvove.

The situation in other directions of the front did not undergo significant changes.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

In the temporarily occupied parts of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts, activists of the Yellow Ribbon resistance movement held an action to mark Ukraine’s Independence Day. In Luhansk, Donetsk, Mariupol, Alchevsk and other cities, they distributed postcards with holiday greetings.

Kharkiv oblast

Frontline

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that there were 179 combat clashes in the oblast. Towards Kupiansk, russians tried to advance five times near Kupiansk, Zapadne, Holubivka, and Zelenyi Hai. One battle is ongoing.

Towards Southern Sloboda, the enemy tried 10 times to break through the defensive lines of our defenders in the vicinity of the settlements of Vovchansk, Ambarne, Kamianka and Zelene.

Towards Kupiansk, there were six enemy attacks. Ukrainian defenders repelled the enemy’s assault actions in the vicinity of ​​Zahryzove and Kupiansk.

Shelling

Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office reported that the russian army shelled Kupiansk with artillery at around 4:00 p.m. An 82-year-old woman was killed, another 35-year-old woman was injured by an explosion, and an 83-year-old woman suffered acute shock. The woman who died in Kupiansk was at the entrance to her own house at the time of the russian strike. 

Kharkiv Regional Police reported that around 12:05 p.m., russians struck Staryi Saltiv with a strike UAV. A 39-year-old man was injured by the explosion and taken to hospital. The facade of a store that is not operating was damaged.

5 settlements in Kharkiv oblast were hit by enemy strikes. There were no casualties as a result of the shelling.

A 74-year-old and 75-year-old woman who were injured in the village of Kivsharivka, Kupiansk community, sought medical attention on August 22.

The enemy actively used various types of weapons, namely:

▪️2 GABs;

▪️6 UAVs of the Geran-2 type;

▪️1 FPV drone.

 

Civilian infrastructure facilities were damaged and destroyed:

▪️In Kharkiv region, a private house, a car, 2 outbuildings (village Slatyne), a warehouse, 2 tractors (village Korotych) were damaged;

▪️In Kupiansk region, a private house was damaged (village Prykolotne); 3 emergency vehicles (city of Kupiansk);

▪️In the Izium region, a hangar, farm premises (village Vyshneve), and a private house (village Borova) were damaged.

Olesandr Syrov, village head, says that almost 80% of buildings were destroyed by russian strikes and fields are mined in Protopopivka village.

Donetsk oblast

Frontline

On Independence Day, russian troops did not reduce pressure on the front towards Kostiantynivka, and also attacked the city, destroying civilian infrastructure. 

Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi reports that in Donetsk oblast, the Defense Forces conducted a successful counterattack. Three villages were cleared of the occupiers: Mykhailivka, Zelenyi Hai and Volodymyrivka.

The restoration of control over Novomykhailivka in Lyman region was carried out by units of the 3rd Army Corps. The 3rd Corps added that as of August 24, Novomykhailivka was under the full control of the Ukrainian military.

Near Pokrovske, russian troops are more actively carrying out strikes with drones on fiber optics. The occupiers are attacking the equipment of the Ukrainian Defense Forces, and are also remotely mining the logistics routes of the Ukrainian defenders.

On the eve of Ukraine’s Independence Day, russian troops increased pressure on five out of six defense directions in Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts. In particular, there was more fighting towards Kramatorsk on the front than the day before. There was 16 russian assaults in Chasiv Yar, towards Markove, Stupochky, Predtechyne and Bila Hora. The occupiers also increased the number of attacks towards Siversk, Toretsk, Pokrovsk and Novopavlivka.

Shelling

Serhii Horbunov, Head of the RMA, says that on the morning of Independence Day, russian troops struck Kostiantynivka with aircraft. The occupiers shelled the art school, where one of the invincibility points in the city was operating. The invaders shelled Kostiantynivka with FAB-250 aerial bombs.

23 civilian objects were destroyed, including 17 residential buildings.

Kostiantynivka withstood 15 enemy strikes, including 11 bomb strikes. russians killed a civilian, damaged 12 apartment buildings, and three educational institutions.

An apartment building was damaged in Druzhkivka as a result of an FPV drone strike. Three FPV drones hit Alekseevo-Druzhkivka – 2 private houses, a medical facility, and a civilian car were destroyed. A private home was damaged in Torske, Druzhkivska community.

Yevhenii Tkachev, Head of the humanitarian mission Proliska in Donetsk oblast, reports that on August 23, a russian drone attacked a vehicle of the mission in Kostiantynivka, when volunteers were going to evacuate civilians. Also on the road was a burning car of local volunteers who had distributed bread to people.

Dmytro Zaporozhets, Spokesman for the 11th Army CorpsOn August 22, says that russian troops carried out a large-scale air raid on Kramatorsk, reporting the destruction of a “large number” of armored vehicles. An inspection by the command of the Ground Forces showed that 90% of the strikes fell on the civilian population.

Other

To mark Ukraine’s Independence Day, an exhibition by Olha Sabadin, an artist from Kostiantynivka, was held in Switzerland. The exhibition “Where Dreams Reach the Stars” includes 35 works painted abroad in the neon painting technique. The paintings are inspired by childhood memories and symbolize the desire of Ukrainians for peace.

Luhansk oblast

The RMA reports that the enemy attacked the positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine located near Hrekivka. In total, there were 20 assaults towards Lyman, 22 artillery attacks were carried out, including from multiple rocket launchers. 54 russian drones carried out combat missions. 

620 bridge structures in the so-called “lpr” require urgent inspection. Most of them are in a state of disrepair. In the part of the region occupied in 2014, bridge restoration was not carried out for 11 years, until this year they had to block traffic in several districts of Luhansk and save worn-out structures. A number of bridges were destroyed by the russian army on the territory of the region captured three years ago.

The demonstration restoration of Rubizhne has stalled, barely beginning. Yes, several contractors remain in the city, but no large-scale work is planned. Local male mercenaries are assured that there are no funds even to pay their salaries.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

Ceremonial events marking Ukraine’s Independence Day took place in the centre of Kyiv. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, together with First Lady Olena Zelenska, welcomed foreign guests at Sofiyska Square. In particular, the Head of State greeted Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine Keith Kellogg. The President also announced that the Ministers of Defense of Sweden, Denmark, Romania, Lithuania, and Canada, as well as the UK Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, had arrived in Ukraine.

As part of a prisoner exchange, UNIAN journalist Dmytro Khilyuk returned to Ukraine after being held in russian captivity for more than 3.5 years as a civilian hostage. The russian soldiers abducted Dmytro in March 2022 in the yard of his own home in the village of Kozarovychi, Kyiv oblast. He was initially held in occupied territory and later transferred to a detention center in russia.

In Borodianka, out of 825 previously damaged residential buildings more than 600 have already been restored. According to the Regional Military Administration, the comprehensive reconstruction includes modernization of utility networks, replacement of over 10 km of water supply and sewage systems, and the introduction of a remote consumption monitoring system.

On August 31, the Ukrainian Women’s Guard will hold a training in Kyiv titled “Self-defense. Recovery. Psychological Resilience” for women, veterans, service members, and their families. The practical program includes exercises for physical recovery, self-defense techniques, psychological resilience practices, and rehabilitation skills.

Makariv has officially joined the national project “Shoulder to Shoulder: United Communities” and signed cooperation memorandums with the Malobilozerska and Myrnenska communities of Zaporizhzhia oblast. According to the settlement council, the partnership will involve the exchange of experience and resources, as well as support for veterans and their families.

In Slavutych, a local photovoltaic power station began operating on August 18, established with the support of the Ukrainian Energy Support Fund. The project aims to reduce electricity consumption from the grid, save budget funds, and protect the environment.

Zhytomyr oblast

In Berdychiv, on Independence Day, an event was held in support of Ukrainian prisoners of war. On the city’s central streets, families of defenders, volunteers, and concerned residents gathered with banners, blue-and-yellow flags, and photographs of those held in russian captivity.

Halyna Biletska, Head of  Andrushivka, reported that on 23 August, to mark Ukraine’s National Flag Day and Independence Day, a memorial stele dedicated to the missing heroes of the russian-Ukrainian war, titled “We Pray… We Wait…”, was unveiled on the Alley of Heroes in Andrushivka.

Sumy oblast

On 24 August the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that in North Slobozhanske and Kursk sectors, Ukrainian defenders repelled four attacks over the past day. Enemy forces carried out 8 air strikes, using 25 guided aerial bombs, and conducted 176 attacks.

The regional military administration informed that on 24 August, Sumy community came under a massive attack by strike drones. The enemy carried out 10 strikes on the territory of the community in Kovpakivka region of Sumy. Response and damage assessment efforts are ongoing.

In the morning of 24 August, the russian army attacked the Pishchane region of Sumy community. Three impacts were recorded, reportedly on a residential building that had previously been destroyed in an earlier attack. No casualties were reported. One resident of the Pishchanske district sought medical assistance due to an acute stress reaction.

Since the night, russians had been intensively attacking settlements in Sumy region by strike drones. Civilian infrastructure facilities in Sumy and Sady communities were damaged, including agricultural enterprises and non-residential buildings.

From the morning of 23 August to the morning of 24 August, russian forces carried out more than 90 attacks on 36 settlements in 14 territorial communities of the oblast. The highest number of strikes was recorded in Sumy and Shostka regions. The enemy actively used guided aerial bombs (over 40 strikes) and also carried out attacks by FPV-drones, multiple launch rocket systems, UAVs, and dropped VOG grenades from UAVs.

The consequences of russian strikes in Sumy oblast as of the morning of 24 August:

  • In Nova Slobidla community, a man born in 1980 was injured in guided bomb strikes. An administrative building, a church, and two private residential houses were damaged;

  • In Sumy community, a private residential house and non-residential buildings were damaged;

  • In Seredyna-Buda community, private residential houses were damaged;

  • In Vorozhba community, 2 apartment buildings, 4 private residential houses, farm buildings, and civilian infrastructure facilities were damaged;

  • In Bilopillia community, a car was destroyed;

  • In Sady community, an administrative building was damaged and a non-residential building destroyed.

Chernihiv oblast

Chernihiv Border Detachment reported that during 23 August, russian forces attacked three border communities in Chernihiv oblast: Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka, and Snovsk. The enemy carried out mortar shelling (5 explosions), strikes by FPV-drones (9 explosions), and dropped explosive devices from UAVs (4 explosions). Seven settlements came under enemy fire.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of the oblast council, reports that at night, the enemy hit Pavlohrad with a missile. The enemy army hit the Synelnyky district. They hit Dubovykivska, Mezhova and Malomykhaylivka communities with GABs and drones. A 47-year-old woman was killed.

Private and apartment buildings were damaged, fires broke out, an agricultural enterprise and outbuildings were hit. The occupiers hit Nikopol region with drones and artillery. They targeted Nikopol, Chervonohryhorivka and Marhanets communities. A high-rise building was damaged.

In Nikopol region there were about two dozen attacks – the enemy hit with drones and artillery during the day. They targeted the Nikopol, Pokrovske, Myrove and Marhanets communities. In Pokrovske community, a 40-year-old chief of the fire and rescue unit was injured and hospitalized in moderate condition. The fire station, a service vehicle, infrastructure, and power line were damaged. It was also noisy in Synelnykove region. The Mezhova community was hit by a drone. According to updated data, 12 private houses and a gas pipeline were damaged due to the morning attack on Malomykhaylivka community. The enemy also attacked Kryvyi Rih region with drones and artillery. There is damage in the residential sector.

Vinnytsia oblast

A national record was set in Vinnytsia for the largest car rally on Independence Day, dedicated to the defenders of Ukraine. 441 vehicles drove through the city to honor those who are currently at the front, in captivity, and who gave their lives for freedom.

Poltava oblast

In Poltava, there was a rally in support of the military who are in captivity or missing. More than 70 people gathered — relatives, friends and acquaintances of the fighters.

Cherkasy oblast

Ihor Taburets, Head of the RMA, says that four Cherkasy residents returned from russian captivity on August 24.

 

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

On 23 August, the occupiers carried out 478 strikes on 11 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast. russian forces launched 2 airstrikes on Novoandriivka. Seven MLRS attacks targeted Plavni, Huliaipole, Malynivka, and Mala Tokmachka. A total of 315 UAVs of various types, mostly FPV, attacked Stepnohirsk, Plavni, Huliaipole, Orikhiv, Shcherbaky, Novodanylivka, Mala Tokmachka, Charivne, Malynivka, and Novoandriivka. One hundred fifty-four artillery strikes hit Plavni, Huliaipole, Malynivka, Shcherbaky, Novodanylivka, Mala Tokmachka, Robotyne, Charivne, and Novoandriivka. Thirteen reports of damaged houses and farm buildings were received. Two people were injured as a result of a russian strike on Polohy region.

On 23 August, two fires broke out in Zaporizhzhia oblast due to russian shelling. A residential building, an outbuilding, and dry vegetation burned.

Defense Forces repelled one russian attack near Kamianske towards Orikhiv. There were no combat clashes towards Huliaipole.

On 24 August, during a prisoner exchange between Ukraine and russia, six servicemen from Zaporizhzhia oblast returned home. Also among those freed from russian captivity today is journalist from Melitopol Mark Kaliush.

Mykolaiv oblast

On 23 August, the enemy attacked the waters of Ochakiv community nine times with FPV drones. There were no casualties.

On 24 August, Independence Day, 200 people gathered in the center of Mykolaiv for the rally “Don’t be silent! Captivity kills!”. Participants reminded about the missing and captured Ukrainian defenders.

Odesa oblast

A 34-meter-long Ukrainian flag was unfurled on Primorsky Boulevard In Odesa, on the occasion of Independence Day. The event was organized by the public organization “Vyshyvankovy Festival.” Later, a patriotic car rally started from the Archaeological Museum. A festive concert is also planned for Independence Day.

Kherson oblast

An elderly woman was injured due to enemy shelling of Tsentralnyi district of Kherson. She sustained blast and head injuries as well as a concussion. 

Around nine in the morning, russian forces attacked a Kherson resident with a drone. As a result of an explosive dropped from the UAV, a 62-year-old man sustained severe injuries. He suffered mine-blast and maxillofacial injuries, along with wounds to his arm and leg. 

Around noon on 24 August, russian troops carried out an airstrike on Kherson oblast. According to the regional administration, three guided aerial bombs hit the outskirts of Kherson. Information about casualties and damage is being clarified. 

A Kherson woman sought medical help after being injured at night during russian shelling. The 38-year-old woman sustained a mine-blast injury and concussion. 

Yesterday, the russian forces attacked Antonivka, Beryslav, Bilozerka, Veletenske, Vesele, Dniprovske, Kachkarivka, Kizomys, Kozatske, Komyshany, Kostyrka, Mykilske, Molodizhne, Novoraisk, Oleksandrivka, Osokorivka, Prydniprovske, Romashkove, Sofiivka, Stanislav, Tokarivka, Tiahynka, Fedorivka, Shyroka Balka, and the city of Kherson. As a result of the attacks, an apartment building and three private houses were damaged. One person was killed and two others injured, including one child, due to russian aggression. 

On 24 August, 2025, as part of a prisoner exchange, former mayor of Kherson Volodymyr Mykolayenko was released. russian forces had abducted the ex-mayor of Kherson on 18 April, 2022.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

Relatives of 2 Heroes from Novovolynsk community were presented with III degree For Courage Orders, which were awarded posthumously to their sons and husbands. Volodymyr Stepaniuk was killed in battle on 20 January, 2023 in Donetsk oblast, and Roman Trush died of wounds in the hospital on 22 August, 2024.

Zakarpattia oblast

This week, the Owl’s Nest Humanitarian Aid Center provided IDPs registered in Uzhgorod with 50 bags with grocery sets and 75 loaves of bread. During the week, volunteers gave out clothes, shoes, bed linen and dishes (1,400 items) from the PDUM Partnerschaft Deutschland-Ukraine/Moldova e. V., Luftfahrt ohne Grenzen / Wings of Help e.V., Spletinnia Kosice, the religious community of the Reformed Church of Beregovo (Bulcha), Valentyn Stefanyo and other benefactors.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

The 24th Separate Mechanized Brigades received MAVIC 3 Pro from Ivano-Frankivsk community.

Lviv oblast

The RMA reported that dozens of volunteers from Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia arrived in Lviv oblast to personally deliver more than 80 vehicles to soldiers on the front lines.

The President of Ukraine awarded Ihor Yarema from Sheptytskyi region with the III degree For Courage Order. The Defender has been a volunteer for the defense of Ukraine since 2016.

Rivne oblast

Another evacuation train arrived in Rivne oblast from Donetsk oblast carrying 24 people. 

Ternopil oblast

Ternopil Regional Clinical Hospital has handed over another ambulance for the military. This is the 8th vehicle that the medical institution has allocated for the needs of the army. The resuscitation vehicle was transferred to the military unit 1141 of the National Guard of Ukraine. The vehicle is equipped with oxygen supply systems, medical equipment and everything necessary to provide emergency care in critical conditions. The vehicle allows for on-site stabilization of patients and transportation to medical facilities.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Khmelnytskyi community has allocated material assistance to 733 community residents. The total amount of assistance is almost UAH 8.2m.

Chernivtsi oblast

A serviceman who was killed defending Ukraine from russian occupiers was paid tribute to in the village of Mykhailivka.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

A Ukrainian flag was raised in front of the headquarters of the European Commission in Brussels.

Polish activists in Warsaw painted the asphalt near the russian embassy in the colors of the Ukrainian flag.

The Latvian Foreign Ministry building was decorated with Ukrainian flags and illuminated in blue and yellow colors on the occasion of public holidays in Ukraine.

In the American city of Federal Way, Washington, the flag of Ukraine was solemnly raised near the city hall on the occasion of Independence Day. This symbolic act of solidarity was carried out by representatives of the city council and the Ukrainian diaspora.
