War in Ukraine today: latest news, 21 June, 2024 (photo)

It has been the 849th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

On 21 June, the total number of combat clashes along the entire front line increased to 99. The occupiers continue to use aviation, in particular KABs, and attack in several directions, in Pokrovsk – especially actively. The defense forces are holding the lines and taking all necessary measures to prevent the breakthrough of Ukrainian defense. 

Towards Kupiansk, fighting is taking place in the vicinity of the settlements of Stelmakhivka, Novoselivka, Pishchane, Synkivka and Berestove. Currently, five clashes are ongoing here. In just one day, there are already 13 attempts by the occupiers to approach Ukrainian positions towards Kupiansk.

Towards Lyman direction, the enemy is attacking in the areas of Hrekivka, Nevsky, Serebryansk forest and Novosadove. In total, since the beginning of the day, there have already been 10 clashes in this direction.

Towards Toretsk, three out of five clashes continue. The enemy used KABs in the city of Toretsk. 

According to preliminary information, the enemy lost 40 servicemen in this direction since the beginning of the day. An artillery installation and one tank were damaged.

The hottest situation is towards Pokrovsk. Almost a third of all clashes at the front took place here. Fighting is taking place in the vicinity of Vozdvyzhenka, Novooleksandrivka and Sokil. So far, the enemy has made 31 attempts to improve its positions. 

Towards Kurakhove, two clashes continue in the vicinity of Krasnohorivka.

Towards Novopavlivka, fighting is taking place in the vicinity of Vodiane and Staromaiorske. 

Towards the Dnipro River area, the enemy attacked Ukrainian defenders near Krynky three times. The battle continues. Ukrainian defenders are holding their positions. 

In other areas, the situation has not changed significantly.

The Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is taking all necessary measures to deter the enemy’s offensive and stabilize the situation.

The Ministry of Digital Transformation reports that the IT Army conducted a large-scale operation and disabled the russian Mir payment system. For several hours, Sberbank, VTV, Tinkoff, Beeline, MTS, Vkontakte, the Mir payment system and other financial, communication and electronic platforms stopped working for russian users. 

The NBU reports that compared to the previous year, the profits of Ukrainian banks increased at a record. The report notes that bank revenues for January-May 2024 increased by 19.0% to UAH 204.195 billion, while interest income increased by 23.3% to UAH 143.195 billion.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

Oleh Syniehubov, Head of the RMA, reported that Kharkiv oblast received 6 new minibuses for communities and rescuers from Germany. This is the result of cooperation with the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the German Embassy in Kyiv and the Federal Agency for Technical Cooperation (THW). 

Volodymyr Tymoshko, Head of Kharkiv police, reported that explosions that were heard in Kharkiv from 5am until around 12am were russian guided missile strikes on Lyptsi, Slobozhanske and Borshchova regions. He says that during this time, russia has launched 17 KABs.

Serhii Kryvetchenko, Deputy Head of Lyptsi Village Military Administration, informed that on 20 June, russian troops attacked a hospital in Lyptsi with a bomb, and despite the strike nearby, the medical facility was damaged but survived. According to him, the bomb destroyed a mobile outpatient clinic and a transformer box.

The National Police confirmed that a 34-year-old resident of Izium region was killed when his car tripped over a mine. The sappers spent three days clearing the field of mines to get to the van and take the body of the deceased. To speed up the work, the sappers used an unmanned demining platform. Police say that in three days of work, they found almost 100 TM-62 anti-tank mines in the area.

Serhii Kryvetchenko added that as of 21 June, 23 people remain in Luptsy, hiding from shelling in basements and cellars. 

At 6:33am, Kruhliakivka village of Kurylivka community, Kupiansk region suffered. The enemy shelling destroyed a summer kitchen and outbuildings in a private household and damaged a house.

Yesterday on 21 June, at  2:55 till 3:12am, Borova village of Borova community, Izium region, was shelled. The shelling damaged 7 houses, a car and a store outbuilding. 

At 4:45pm, Ruski Tyshky village of Tsyrkuny community, Kharkiv region, was hit. A man was injured as a result of the shelling.

At 1pm, Kupiansk of Kupiansk region was shelled. The shelling damaged a private household.

Towards Kharkiv, russian invaders tried to storm the positions of our units near Vovchansk, Lyptsi and Tykhe three times with the support of aviation. All enemy attacks were unsuccessful.

The enemy attacked our positions towards Kupiansk 16 times. Near Stepova Novoselivka, Synkivka, Stelmakhivka and Pishchane, the defence forces repelled 15 offensive attacks without success for the enemy. The situation is tense. A battle continues near Stelmakhivka.

Combined teams of bomb experts cleared 19.72 hectares of territory and destroyed 221 explosive devices.

Donetsk oblast

According to the General Staff, the russian army is trying to break through to Toretsk. Towards Pokrovsk, russians have conducted 21 attacks since the beginning of the day near Novooleksandrivka, Vozdvyzhenka, Sokil and Novoselivka Persha. The Defence Forces repelled 6 attacks and 15 more are ongoing.

Nazar Voloshyn, Spokesman of the Khortytsia operational-strategic group, reported that toward Pokrovsk, russian troops have deployed up to 8 assault brigades and are constantly assaulting Ukrainian positions. Yesterday more than 50 combat engagements were there.

Donetsk regional Prosecutor’s Office informed that this morning, russians dropped a guided aerial bomb on Selydove, hitting residential buildings. Five five-storey buildings, 6 private houses and a car were damaged. Two people were killed and three injured in the attacks. Two men aged 51 and 52 were killed and three residents aged 35, 43 and 65 injured.

The regional police said on the website that the russian army attacked Mykolaivka five times yesterday, including by an X-59 missile, bombs and attack drones.

The operational situation in the oblast as of the morning of 21 June is as follows:

Pokrovsk region. A person was injured in Maksymilianivka of Marinka community. In Kurakhove community, private houses were damaged in Hostre and the outskirts of Kurakhove shelled.

Kramatorsk region. Zakitne, Zarichne, Terny, Yampolivka and Yampil of Lyman community were shelled. In Mykolaivka, 1 person was killed and 3 injured. In Kostiantynivka, 1 person was killed and 1 injured, 4 houses  damaged; also in the community, 1 person was injured and 2 houses damaged in Mykolaivka, 1 house was damaged in Ivanopillia. In Rozkishne of Illinivka community, 3 people were killed and 4 injured, 7 objects damaged.

Bakhmut region. In Chasiv Yar community, 11 private houses, 2 non-residential buildings and an industrial building were damaged. A person was injured in Pivnichne of Toretsk community. Siversk and Serebrianka were under attack.

In total, russians attacked settlements in Donetsk oblast 22 times over the day. 81 people, including 13 children, were evacuated from the frontline.

Vadym Filashkin, Head of Luhansk Regional Military Administration, reported that yesterday russians killed 5 civilians: 3 in Rozkishne, 1 in Mykolaivka and 1 in Kostiantynivka. Another 11 people in the oblast were injured.

Luhansk oblast

Despite constant shelling, a weekly bread was delivered to Nevske, Novoliubivka and Makiivka. There are still people in each of these villages. An elderly woman was evacuated yesterday. Others are still refusing. Also russians attacked Nevske by rocket artillery. Stelmakhivka, Kuzemivka, Nevske and Makiivka were shelled by cannon artillery and mortars.

The enemy attacked towards Lyman and Kupiansk 22 times, in Luhansk oblast near Stelmakhivka, Nevske, Hrekivka, Serhiivka, Serebrianka forest.

According to Luhansk Regional Military Administration, the invaders confiscate civilian vehicles in the occupied territories. They targeted passenger cars. The pretext can be the smallest violation of traffic rules. This practice is not new in the so-called “lpr”. However, previously, it applied mainly to special vehicles.

Artem Lysohor, Head of Luhansk Regional Military Administration, reported that russians are threatening agrarians in the temporarily occupied Luhansk oblast who will not be able to fulfil their harvesting plans due to bad weather. 

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

According to Kakhovka City Military Administration, a humanitarian hub has been opened in Kyiv for IDPs from Kherson oblast. Kakhovka, Kalanchak and Tavrychansk military administrations joined the formation of the Hub. According to rough estimates, more than 50,000 IDPs live in Kyiv and the oblast, and among them people from all vulnerable categories of the population should receive assistance. In particular, advice on employment and legal issues are provided.

Three digital information stands will also be installed in Kyiv to honour the memory of the military killed as a result of russian aggression, as reported by Kyiv City State Administration. The memory locations will be located at the expense of extra-budgetary funds near the Memorial Complex of Heroes-Kyivans and at the corner of Mykhailo Hrushevsky street and the alley of Magdeburg Law.

In the capital, animal protection is included in the emergency rescue algorithm. According to the Kyiv City State Administration, specialists of Kyiv Rescue Service and the City Hospital of Veterinary Medicine not only conducted joint training, but also intend to integrate algorithms for identifying and helping injured animals into their work. The city’s rescue services are planned to be strengthened by teams of veterinarians who, if necessary, will respond to the call. Employees of the veterinary hospital received transport for such tasks.

Oleksandr Markushyn, Mayor of Irpin, reports that Irpin sends drones, cars and ATVs bought at the expense of the city budget and patrons to Kharkiv, Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia areas of the front. The list of vehicles includes: 108 FPV drones with thermal imaging cameras, 7 Mavic 3T, Mavic PRO and 2 charging stations, at the expense of local residents’ taxes, Polaris 570 ATV for money from the “We work for the Armed Forces of Ukraine for 1 day” promotion, Nissan SUV at the expense of patrons.

According to Bucha Mayor Anatoliy Fedoruk, the outpatient clinic opened in Bucha is becoming the third newly built medical institution after the de-occupation. The project was implemented under the sponsorship of the Leroy Merlin Solidarity Charitable Foundation, which supplied construction materials and at the expense of the local budget.

Zhytomyr oblast

Zhytomyr and the oblast paid tribute to their residents who died defending Ukraine from the military aggression of russia – Vadym Buzhimskyi, Maksym (Volf) Bulyhin, and Mykola Trihubchuk from Ruzhyn.

An evening in memory of the fallen serviceman Timur Abubakarov was held in Zviahel. Before the start of the full-scale invasion, he twice participated in peacekeeping missions in Kosovo and Liberia, and during russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, he defended Kyiv, Lysychansk and the Svitlodarsk bulge.

On 20 June, in Zhytomyr’s Veteran’s House, the results of the children’s drawing competition “Thank you for your protection” were summed up. The award ceremony was attended by military personnel undergoing rehabilitation, including Oleksandr Kondratenko, a war veteran and winner of three gold medals in swimming. The works were donated to the Veteran’s House. Participants of Zhytomyr ballet school “Avante” arranged a concert for the military and presented art therapy kits.

In Zhytomyr oblast, a meeting of border guard officers of the 2024 class was held to improve theoretical and practical skills. The graduates studied the procedure for activities in the northern section of the border and consolidated the previously acquired knowledge. 

On 19 June, the fleet of Zhytomyr oblast was replenished with 4 fire trucks. Two Ford cars, purchased at the request of the State Emergency Service, will go to Zviahel and Zhytomyr regions. DENNIS FIRE and SCANIA are donated by a non-governmental British charity as part of the FIRE AID initiative focused on emergency work.

Sumy oblast

At night and in the morning, the russians carried out 11 attacks on the border areas. There were 37 explosions.  In Znob-Novhorodske community, the enemy fired from barrel artillery, causing 4 explosions. The russians dropped 5 mines on the territory of Krasnopillia community. Khotyn community was shelled with mortars – 7 explosions. Velyka Pysarivka community was shelled with mortars – 4 explosions. An FPV drone attack was recorded in Bilopillia community – 1 explosion, mortar shelling – 10 explosions, VOG drop from UAVs – 2 explosions, artillery shelling – 4 explosions.

Yurii Zarko, Head of the community, says that more than 10 thousand people have already left Bilopillia to avoid potential danger. In total, about 4K residents remained in the community, most of whom refuse to evacuate, despite the calls of the authorities. 

Explosives technicians found a rocket in Shostka region. Experts have established that this is the affected part of the long-range fire system of the Tornado MLRS. The dangerous item was removed for examination and disposal, ensuring the safety of the locals.

Chernihiv oblast

Halyna Shekhovtsova, Spokeswoman of Chernihiv border detachment, reports that during the day, the russian army attacked two border communities of Chernihiv oblast: Semenivka and Snovsk. The fire was carried out from a mortar and an FPV drone. In total, there were two explosions, namely Semenivka community – one explosion (presumably from a 120 mm mortar) towards the village of Bleshnia, and Snovsk community – one explosion (probably a FPV drone) towards the village of Khrinivka.

The Regional Center for Emergency Medical Care and Disaster Medicine received 5 specialized C-type ambulances (ambulances) based on Citroen Jumper 4×4 Dangel. The vehicles are equipped with everything necessary to provide emergency medical care to patients at the scene and during transportation. The ambulances will be sent on duty to the oblast regions.

Yuriy Muzyka, Head of the Department of Education and Science of Chernihiv Regional State Administration, reports that  76 preschool education institutions in Chernihiv oblast are idle or have suspended their work. The main reason is the lack of security equipment and shelters, and also, the location of these kindergartens in a 20-kilometer zone from the border with Russia where full-time education is currently prohibited by the decision of the Regional Defense Council.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Council, reported that the occupiers attacked Nikopol region twice. They fired artillery at Marhanets community and launched a kamikaze drone at Nikopol. In the morning, the enemy attacked Nikopol with 5 kamikaze drones.

Two men, aged 60 and 22 years old, were injured as a result of an enemy rocket attack on Kryvyi Rih. A food warehouse was damaged, a fire broke out and was extinguished. The enemy was firing at Nikopol all day long. There were about a dozen and a half attacks. A 71-year-old woman was injured as a result of enemy shelling in Nikopol. The occupants shelled not only the region’s center, but also Marhanets, Myrove and Pokrovsk communities. 12 private houses, 11 outbuildings, an infrastructure facility, 2 cars, a garage, power lines and gas pipelines were damaged.

Vinnytsia oblast

Vinnytsia City Council reported that ​​Vinnytsia oblast has transferred 10 Mavic 3Ts and 10 thousand dry showers to the DIU’s Kraken special unit.

The police officers of the Joint Assault Brigade of the National Police of Ukraine “Rage” who were killed in Vinnytsia oblast were posthumously awarded. The awards were handed over to the families of fallen defenders.

Kirovohrad oblast

Andrii Raikovych, Head of the RMA, reported that air defence destroyed enemy missiles over Kirovohrad oblast last night. 

Cherkasy oblast

Soldier Volodymyr Moroz was paid tribute to in Zvenyhorod region. He received life-threatening injuries in Donetsk oblast. It is known that the soldier served in the motorized infantry brigade named after Hetman Ivan Vyhovskyi.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

On 21 June, the russian army carried out an airstrike on the village of Vozdvyzhivka. As a result of the shelling, one person was killed, and two others injured and are currently in the hospital.

On 20 June, the occupiers launched 324 strikes on Zaporizhzhia oblast. Ten settlements were under enemy fire. The enemy conducted airstrikes on Novoandriivka, Hulyaipole, and Malynivka. 84 UAVs of various modifications attacked Huliaipole, Levadne, Robotyne, Mala Tokmachka, Malynivka, and Novoandriivka. Six MLRS strikes hit Robotyne and Huliaipole. 231 artillery strikes targeted Chervonodniprovka, Orikhiv, Huliaipole, Mala Tokmachka, Novoandriivka, Robotyne, Levadne, Malynivka, Huliaipilske, and Kopani. There were five reports of housing destruction.

On 20 June, the enemy attacked an evacuation group’s vehicle during evacuation in Hulyaipole. There were three police officers and a 61-year-old woman who agreed to move to a safe place inside. The people survived thanks to the vehicle being armoured.

On 20 June, two fires broke out due to enemy shelling. Firefighters extinguished a fire in an outbuilding covering an area of 20 square meters, as well as a fire involving rubbish and shrubs covering an area of 200 square meters in Orikhiv. They extinguished a fire involving dry grass in an open area of 0.05 hectares in Stepnohirsk. No information on casualties or deaths was reported.

It is reported that the russian aggressor twice attempted to dislodge Ukrainan defenders from positions near Mala Tokmachka towards Orikhiv. One attack was successfully repelled, and another battle is ongoing.

Mykolaiv oblast

On 20 June, at 09:30 and 11:22, the enemy shelled the settlements in Kutsurub community using artillery. There were no casualties.

International partners delivered about 10 tons of medicines to  healthcare facilities of Mykolaiv oblast. Next week, Mykolaiv RMA will begin distributing the medicines to 50 hospitals. 

Odesa oblast

In the afternoon, the russian army attacked the coastal area of Odesa oblast with ballistic missiles. As a result of the strike, a recreational infrastructure facility was damaged. A fire broke out at the site, which has already been extinguished.

Preparations for the opening of the beach are ongoing in the village of Prymorske in Izmail region. A 600-meter stretch has been designated for the beach area. Rescuers have surveyed the underwater area to ensure safe swimming. Considering the possibility of emergencies, special observation towers have been installed on the beach. The area will be marked off with buoys. Rescuers will be monitoring vacationers. Currently, efforts are focused on setting up a shelter. The official opening of the beach is planned for 1 July.

Kherson oblast

The russian army attacked the villages of Kindiika and Veletenske. Two people were injured in Kindiika as a result of the enemy strike on a residential building. A 25-year-old woman was diagnosed with a concussion, blast injury, and traumatic brain injury. A 52-year-old man sustained a blast injury and a shrapnel wound to his arm. A 49-year-old man received a blast injury and a shrapnel wound to his chest in Veletenske.

On 20 June, the settlements of Lvove, Zolota Balka, Dudchany, Mykhailivka, Mykolaivka, Tiahynka, Bilozerka, Poniativka, Komyshany, Novotiahynka, Ivanivka, Antonivka, Sadove, Havrylivka, and the city of Kherson were under enemy fire and airstrikes. As a result of the attacks, an administrative building and five private houses were damaged. One person was killed and another injured due to russian aggression. Later, Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of Kherson RMA, reported that as a result of yesterday’s enemy shelling of the city, another person died from their injuries.

The air defense forces destroyed a guided air missile over Kherson oblast.

Police bomb disposal experts discovered and neutralized a russian aerial bomb in Kherson oblast. The unexploded bomb was found in a field near a village in Mylove community. The OFAB-250 bomb was in an armed state and contained a large explosive charge, posing a significant danger to the residents. Specialists neutralized it on-site following all safety protocols.

46 % of fields in Kherson oblast remain potentially dangerous. In July, specialists from the Swiss Foundation for Mine Action (FSD Ukraine) will begin demining work in Kherson oblast. Currently, 400 employees are successfully working in the border areas of Kharkiv and Chernihiv oblasts.

As of 21 June, around two thousand households in Antonivka community are without gas supply. The gas pipeline was damaged due to constant russian shelling, leaving up to 600 families in Antonivka without gas. Specialists are assessing the extent of the damage to carry out emergency repair work.

Volyn oblast

Lutsk City Council sent 3 Starlink satellite systems, a DJI Mavic 3 Enterprise quadcopter, 3 sets of Alientech Duo II signal amplifiers, 2 Bandera Power 225S multi-channel fast charging units, 2 EcoFlow Delta 2 portable power stations, 3 FPV drone control panels Radiomaster and glasses for them, as well as 10 batteries for quadcopters to the 9937 Military Unit in Kharkiv oblast.

Zakarpattia oblast

100 Ukrainian children return from vacation in Hungary. Over the past three years, Hungarian partners in cooperation with Zakarpattia RMA have accepted several thousand children from different oblasts of Ukraine for rest and recovery.

As part of the joint project Interreg NEXT Poland –Ukraine 2021-2027, the Regional Children’s Hospital of Zakarpattia Regional Council signed a partnership agreement with the University Children’s Clinic of Białystok. The key goal of the project is to provide high-quality medical services and facilitate children’s health.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Ivano-Frankivsk community sent FPV drones to the 116th Separate Mechanised Brigade, fighting in Kupiansk region thanks to the budget funds.

Lviv oblast

The RMA held a meeting with the delegation of the Embassy of Japan in Ukraine. The key topic to discuss is economic cooperation between Ukraine and Japan, namely business development and investment.

During the visit of the Delegation of the European Union to Ukraine, Lviv City Hall signed an agreement on the construction of 7 buildings on Mykolaichuka street. The European Commission has allocated EUR 19.5m in grant funds for the construction of eight social houses that can accommodate up to 700 people.

New departments of reconstructive surgery and hearing restoration were opened at the Superhumans Center. The entire complex of the prosthetics, rehabilitation and reconstructive surgery centre was put into operation. For those who suffered because of the war, treatment and recovery is free.

Olena Zelenska, First Lady of Ukraine, is visiting Lviv oblast. She took part in the Teachers of the Future Forum. 2,500 teachers from various oblasts of Ukraine and abroad gathered here.

Rivne oblast

Rivne oblast received journalists from Kharkiv and other oblasts of Ukraine. One and a half dozen representatives of the local media came here with a two-day press tour. During the meeting, Oleksandr Koval, Head of the RMA, discussed the veteran policy, integration of IDPs, the search for investors, etc.

A forum dedicated to the International Refugee Day was held in Rivne oblast. Badges in the form of doves became the symbol of the event, because these birds represent peace.

In Rivne RMA, the appearance of the curfew pass has been changed. New passes will have a unique QR code and more security levels. The key difference is that the permit for the new model will not be for a car, as before, but for a specific person. Thus, during the curfew, the pass holder will be able to travel both by transport and on foot. It will be valid only in the presence of an identity document.

Ternopil oblast

Ternopil City Council sent 5 Mavic 3T drones to the 93th Separate Mechanised Brigade Kholodny Yar. It was the budget procurement.

In Ternopil, state awards were presented to families of the fallen law enforcement officers of the Special Purpose Police Department United Assault Brigade of the National Police of Ukraine Lyit. 5 defenders were awarded with the For the Defense of Ukraine award by the President of Ukraine (posthumously), 3 of them also received the Defender of the Fatherland medal.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Khmelnytskyi community sent 300 8-inch FPV drones worth UAH 4m to the Defense Forces thanks to the budget funds.

Chernivtsi oblast

A military-patriotic school was held for the youth of Vyzhnytskyi region. Its goal is to form Ukrainian civic identity, increasing the level of competences of young people, awareness about their own security, and developing military and patriotic education. Within the framework of the school, young men and women were trained in basics of tactical medicine, mine and explosive work, tactical actions of movement in war conditions, safe behaviour in the forest and mountainous terrain, and drones control of .

The RMA reported that Kamianske community provided financial assistance for treatment in the amount of UAH 15,000 each to 2 servicemen. 

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Rheinmetall, the German defence plant, reported receiving a record order for 155-mm artillery shells. The total value of the contract for the supply of ammunition will be about €8.5bn. The order was made to replenish stocks of the Bundeswehr and its allies, as well as to support Ukraine. Deliveries should begin in early 2025.

Romania will send a Patriot anti-aircraft missile system to Ukraine, which the country needs to strengthen its defence against enemy air targets. This decision was adopted by the Supreme Council of National Defense of Romania under the chairmanship of Klaus Iohannis, President of the country.

Japan extended sanctions against the russian federation and its partners because of the war in Ukraine. There are dozens of companies on the sanctions list, including those from China and 4 other countries. 11 individuals and 42 organisations from russia were sanctioned. 7 Chinese companies that helped the russian federation to buy electronics, as well as one company each from India, Kazakhstan, the UAE and Uzbekistan, came under restrictions. The assets of these companies in Japan are to be frozen, and deals with them by Japanese firms and citizens are now prohibited.

Ukraine and the European Commission extended the visa-free transport mode for one year with the possibility of its automatic extension until the end of 2025.
