What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

The Ministry of Energy reported that the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant has been powered by the United Energy System of Ukraine. The ministry confirmed an enemy attack on energy infrastructure nodes, which provide power to facilities in the Chornobyl exclusion zone. Currently, there is no threat to the population or the environment. The radiation background at the industrial site and in the exclusion zone does not exceed control levels.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, following an energy conference call,reported that as of the morning of 21 January, almost 60% of consumers in Kyiv remain without electricity. There is no heating in about 4,000 multi-storey buildings. Recall that as a result of the russian night attack on energy facilities in the capital on 20 January, more than 335,000 Kyiv residents were left without electricity. More than 5,635 high-rise buildings without heat. Part of the city without water supply.

The Ministry of Energy reported that water supply in the capital had been restored. Emergency crews from other oblasts and Ukrzaliznytsia are involved in restoring electricity and heat. Kyiv also received 55 additional generators from the Ministry of Energy’s reserve hub, while aid from partners is also expected.

DTEK reported on 21 January at around 3 p.m that in Kyiv, power supply to all critical infrastructure facilities was restored after a massive rrussian attack. According to energy officials, the situation with power supply in the capital remains difficult. Emergency power cuts continue. About 44,000 homes remain without electricity.

Head of the Kyiv Regional State Administration Mykola Kalashnyk informed that a comprehensive system of support for communities in Kyiv Oblast is being deployed to provide food, heating and communications during power outages in freezing weather. An autonomous train-kitchen has been launched in the oblast with the support of Ukrzaliznytsia and the Howard G. Buffett Foundation. Initially, it will operate in the Bucha district. This is a completely autonomous solution with a capacity of up to 10,000 meals per day.

Mayor Vitalii Klychko announced that the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ), a German government agency that provides international technical assistance, will transfer two cogeneration units to Kyiv. The parties signed a memorandum according to which the plants (mini-CHP) should arrive in the Ukrainian capital next week.

The RMA reported that as of today, all schools and kindergartens in Kyiv oblast are provided with heating. There are 635 general secondary education institutions and 744 pre-school education institutions operating. More than 65% of educational institutions have individual heating systems – this is 387 schools, of which 140 run on gas, 261 on solid fuel, and another 14 use combined systems.

Schools and kindergartens in Kyiv oblast have 1,912 backup power generators installed – 1,123 in general secondary education institutions and 789 in pre-school education institutions. Fuel reserves have been formed to ensure uninterrupted operation even during prolonged power outages. In addition, 35 educational institutions in Kyiv oblast are equipped with solar panels with a capacity of 10 to 51 kW.

The Wildlife Rescue Centre in Kyiv oblast has no electricity or heating after russian shelling. The Centre reported that due to severe frosts, water froze in the system without electricity, and there is no heat in the animal enclosures. It is noted that the shelter does not have enough funds to purchase fuel pellets, and other heating methods cannot be used due to the lack of electricity. Currently, the animals are being given even more straw in their enclosures, and snow is being melted to provide water, although it turns to ice within an hour.

Zhytomyr oblast

The Regional Military Administration reported that on 20 January, Zhytomyr honoured the memory of the fallen ‘cyborgs’ – participants in the defence of Donetsk Airport named after Serhiy Prokofiev who died during the russian-ukrainian war. Participants in the event lit lamps and laid flowers at the memorial sign ‘To the Defenders of Ukraine in the War with the russian aggressor’ and at the memorial plaques to the fallen soldiers of the ATO/OOS.

The Swiss city of Lucerne plans to donate 13 trolleybuses to Zhytomyr free of charge. This donation was made at the request of the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO).

Sumy oblast

In recent days, troops of the 8th Air Assault Corps of the Armed Forces of Ukraine destroyed two russian Buk surface-to-air missile systems in Sumy oblast in a single day. The systems identified were Buk-M2 and Buk-M3. russian forces had attempted to conceal the systems in a forest. The destroyed systems are among the key air defence assets of russian troops and are also used to strike ground targets.

The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine reported that in Sumy oblast, border guard drone operators destroyed russian communications and UAV control antennas, material supplies, vehicles, shelters, and enemy personnel. They also damaged a russian electrical transformer.

The Regional Military Administration informed that on 20 January, two civilians were injured as a result of a guided aerial bomb strike in Bilopillia community. A 21-year-old man and a 42-year-old woman sought medical assistance and were treated.

During the daytime on 20 January, russian forces attacked Hlukhiv. A UAV struck one of the city’s residential neighbourhoods. The blast wave damaged multi-storey apartment buildings and vehicles. Heating was disrupted in parts of the city.

According to Sumy City Military Administration, in Bytytskyi starosta district and in Stetskivka, russian UAV strikes were recorded. No casualties were reported. Three UAV strikes were recorded in Bytytskyi starosta district. In Stetskivka, a civilian vehicle caught fire as a result of a drone strike.

The Regional Military Administration reported that over the past 24 hours, three people were injured as a result of russian shelling. In Bilopillia community, a 42-year-old woman and a 21-year-old man were wounded by guided aerial bomb strikes. In Hlukhiv community, a 63-year-old man was injured in a UAV attack. In addition, a 32-year-old woman who had been injured on 17 January as a result of a guided aerial bomb strike on Sumy community sought medical assistance.

Over the past 24 hours, from the morning of 20 January to the morning of 21 January, russian forces carried out nearly 80 attacks on 31 settlements across 16 territorial communities of the oblast. The highest number of attacks was recorded in Sumy and Shostka regions. The enemy used artillery, mortars, FPV drones, UAVs, and guided aerial bombs. Over the day, air raid alerts in the oblast lasted for 19 hours and 7 minutes.

Civilian infrastructure was damaged or destroyed as follows:

  • In Sumy community, a private residential house and passenger vehicles were damaged;
  • In Bilopillia community, premises of an educational institution, an administrative building, multi-storey residential buildings, a civilian infrastructure facility, and vehicles were damaged;
  • In Richky community, a non-residential building and a vehicle were damaged;
  • In Hlukhiv community, multi-storey residential buildings and a civilian infrastructure facility were damaged;
  • In Krasnopillia community, a civilian infrastructure facility was damaged;
  • In Boromlia community, a private residential house, a non-residential structure, and passenger vehicles were damaged;
  • In Esman community, one private residential house was destroyed and another private residential house was damaged.

Over the 24-hour period, 86 people were evacuated from border communities by local authorities in cooperation with units of the State Emergency Service, the National Police, and civil society organisations.

The Regional Military Administration announced that in Sumy oblast, authorities plan to deploy some of 30 “Wagons of Invincibility” as additional support points during prolonged power outages and cold weather. The wagons will be installed at railway stations where no stationary Points of Invincibility are available. They will be equipped with heating, charging stations, Starlink connectivity, microwave ovens, and refrigerators. A separate compartment with games will be arranged for children, and pet-friendly sections will also be provided.

Chernihiv oblast

Snovsk City Council reported that during the daytime on 21 January, russian forces struck Snovsk town. As a result of the attack, a municipally owned building was damaged.

The Regional Military Administration said that on 20 January, a russian Shahed UAV exploded on the grounds of a lyceum in Dobrianka community. No casualties were reported, as children are currently on holiday.

In a village of Semenivka community, a House of Culture building caught fire following a UAV strike the previous day. According to Oleksandr Seliverstov,  Head of Novhorod-Siverskyi Regional State Administration, the incident occurred in Kostobobriv village.

Chernihiv Border Guard Detachment informed that over the course of 20 January, russian forces attacked three border communities of Chernihiv oblast: Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka, and Snovsk. The enemy carried out shelling by tube artillery (six explosions) and launched FPV drone strikes (10 explosions). Seven villages came under fire.

The State Environmental Inspectorate in Chernihiv Oblast reported that environmental damage exceeding UAH 23m. was caused by a russian UAV strike on a five-storey residential building in Chernihiv in December 2025. The strike resulted in fires in two apartments and partial destruction of the building. The fire caused an unorganised release of pollutants into the atmosphere, negatively affecting the environment. In addition, debris and construction waste polluted a land plot with a total area of about 1,000 square metres.

According to Dmytro Bryzhynskyi, Head of Chernihiv City Military Administration, on 21 January, units of the State Emergency Service deployed two additional Points of Invincibility in Chernihiv to meet residents’ needs. According to the State Emergency Service, a total of 31 Points of Invincibility are currently operating in the city, 15 of them run by the Service, including seven mobile units, six stationary points, and two assistance centres.

Viacheslav Chaus, Head of Chernihiv Regional Military Administration, announced that in Chernihiv, plans are in place to build more than 400 apartments for internally displaced persons and a kindergarten designed for 200 children. The construction will be made possible with the support of the GAU Foundation of Denmark.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Kryvyi Rih region. Overnight, the enemy struck Kryvyi Rih by a missile. Emergency responders rescued a 58-year-old woman. Nine private houses, five multi-storey residential buildings, an administrative building, and vehicles were damaged.

Synelnykove region. Occupying forces launched UAVs at Vasylkivka and Rozdory communities. A 77-year-old man and a 72-year-old woman were killed. A 53-year-old woman was injured. Fires broke out in private houses, with three private homes damaged in total.

Nikopol region. Occupying forces shelled the regional centre as well as Marhanets, Pokrovske, and Chervonohryhorivka communities by artillery and drones. In Nikopol, emergency responders rescued an 89-year-old woman from a house damaged by a drone and provided the necessary assistance. A fire broke out. Two private houses and a summer house, infrastructure facilities, power lines, and a gas pipeline were damaged.

Synelnykove region. In Vasylkivka community, a UAV attack caused a fire, damaging three vehicles and a multi-storey residential building.

Vinnytsia oblast

The deaths of nine defenders from Vinnytsia oblast were reported: Vitalii Bevza, Roman Koval, Serhii Antoniuk, Oleksandr Oliinyk, Dmytro Bezpalko, Serhii Borovskyi, Vadym Datsiuk, Anatolii Zhylinskyi, and Mykola Danylenko.

Kirovohrad oblast

In two communities of Oleksandriia region, residents paid tribute to three soldiers killed at the front: Anton Semeniuk from Vlasivka village in Svitlovodsk community, Oleksandr Kaleniuk, and Andrii Kravtsiv from Oleksandriia city.

Anton Semeniuk had been listed as missing in action since March 2025. His death was confirmed on 12 January 2026. He was killed on 11 March 2025 near Basivka village in Sumy region during assault operations by russian forces.

Oleksandr Kaleniuk was killed on 3 November 2024 in Kursk oblast.

Andrii Kravtsiv was killed on 10 January 2026 in Zaporizhzhia oblast.

Poltava oblast

Two soldiers were killed at the front: Pavlo Miroshnychenko from Velyka Bahachka and Oleh Liakhivnenko from Khorol region.

Pavlo Miroshnychenko was killed on 12 January 2026 during combat operations in Sumy oblast.

Oleh Liakhivnenko was killed as a result of a strike by a russian FPV drone while carrying out a combat mission on 11 January 2026 near Hryshyne village in Pokrovsk region of Donetsk oblast.

Poltava city paid tribute to UAV rifleman-operator Mykola Lyfar. The defender died on 4 January 2026 while carrying out a mission in Dnipropetrovsk oblast.

Artem Burka, a resident of Pustovary village  in Reshetylivka community, was killed. He had been considered missing in action for almost two years. The 24-year-old soldier was killed in action on 17 February 2024 near Verbove in Zaporizhzhia oblast.

In Novoselivka, Poltava oblast, a Wagon of Invincibility has begun operating. A Wagon of Invincibility provided by Ukrzaliznytsia arrived in Novoselivka village. It will operate around the clock during power outages. Inside, residents can warm up, charge devices, use Starlink, and have hot drinks. The wagon was placed at Svynkivka station and can be used by residents of Novoselivka and neighbouring villages. Ukrzaliznytsia’s Wagons of Invincibility are fully autonomous mobile hubs with heating and power supply. The project was implemented using carriages from the non-operational fleet not involved in passenger transportation.

Cherkasy oblast

In Uman community, a day of mourning was declared following the death of defender Oleksandr Savchuk. Oleksandr served as a squad commander in a company of unmanned aerial vehicle systems within a motorised infantry battalion.

In Chornobai, a farewell ceremony was held for serviceman Bohdan Khoptyn, who was killed in Donetsk oblast. He was 40 years old. The incident occurred on 12 January 2026.

From Smila, 27-year-old combat medic Maksym Skorbilin was killed. He died as a result of artillery shelling while carrying out a combat mission in Kupiansk region of Kharkiv oblast on 13 January 2026.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration reported that yesterday, 20 January, the occupiers carried out 749 strikes on 34 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast. russian forces conducted 19 air strikes on Kushuhum, Bilenke, Huliaipole, Zaliznychne, Rizdvianka, Barvinivka, Vozdvyzhivka, Huliaipilske, Sviatopetrivka, Hirske, Luhivske and Verkhnia Tersa. 423 UAVs of various types (mostly FPV) attacked Zaporizhzhia, Novomykolaivka, Ternuvate, Novooleksandrivka, Barvinivka, Zalyvne, Mykhailivske, Stepnohirsk, Prymorske, Stepove, Huliaipole, Zaliznychne, Shcherbaky, Mali Shcherbaky, Novodanylivka, Novoandriivka, Mala Tokmachka, Charivne, Bilohiria, Dorozhnianka, Varvarivka, Zelene, Solodke and Dobropillia. Four MLRS attacks were carried out on the territory of Tersianka, Huliaipole and Zaliznychne. 303 artillery strikes hit Stepnohirsk, Prymorske, Stepove, Huliaipole, Zaliznychne, Shcherbaky, Mali Shcherbaky, Novodanylivka, Novoandriivka, Mala Tokmachka, Charivne, Bilohiria, Dorozhnianka, Varvarivka, Zelene and Solodke. 76 reports were received about damage to homes, vehicles and infrastructure. Four people were killed and six were injured as a result of enemy attacks on Zaporizhzhia and Zaporizhzhia region.

According to the General Staff, as of 16:00 on 21 January, since the start of the day Ukrainian defenders repelled 19 enemy attacks near Huliaipole, Dobropillia and Varvarivka towards Huliaipole. Over the past day, 20 January, the Defense Forces of Ukraine repelled nine russian attacks towards Huliaipole and two attacks towards Orikhiv.

Mykolaiv oblast

Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration reported that yesterday, 20 January, the enemy carried out a missile strike at the premises of an enterprise in Mykolaiv region; the type of missile is being determined. There were no casualties.

Yesterday the enemy carried out 14 FPV drone attacks on Ochakiv and Kutsurub communities. The façade and roof of a gymnasium were damaged in the city of Ochakiv  — 30 people (students and teachers) were in a shelter at the time of the attack. There were no casualties. A private house and the building of a non-operational gas station were also damaged.

Odesa oblast

Odesa Regional Military Administration reported that on the night of 21 January the enemy carried out a massive drone attack on the south of Odesa oblast. Residential and industrial infrastructure was damaged. One person was injured. Private residential houses were damaged and destroyed in Odesa region. A warehouse building storing furniture products was destroyed.

DTEK Odesa Power Grids reported that on the morning of 21 January, as a result of the russian attack, one of the company’s energy facilities suffered significant damage. As a result, several thousand customers were temporarily left without electricity.

Kherson oblast

Kherson Regional Military Administration reported that at noon on 21 January russians shelled Dniprovskyi district of Kherson. A woman was taken to hospital in extremely critical condition and died from her injuries.

According to Kherson RMA, at about 11:00 on 21 January russians attacked Shyroka Balka with a UAV. A 73-year-old man suffered blast injuries, shrapnel wounds to the chest and arm, and a broken hand.

At around 07:00 russians attacked a man with a drone in Dniprovskyi district of Kherson. The 59-year-old resident sustained blast injuries and a shrapnel wound to the arm.

At approximately 14:20 russians struck Tsentralnyi district of Kherson with a strike drone. The enemy UAV hit an apartment building, damaging the wall and facade and shattering windows.

A man who was attacked by a russian drone on the morning of 16 January in the Dniprovskyi district of Kherson was taken to hospital. The 64-year-old suffered blast injuries and shrapnel wounds to his legs.

Two people sought medical help after their car was attacked by russians yesterday afternoon near the village of Sadove. Preliminary reports say a 58-year-old man and a 52-year-old woman sustained blast injuries.

Yesterday, 20 January, the russian forces attacked Antonivka, Sadove, Zelenivka, Prydniprovske, Yantarske, Bilozerka, Sofiivka, Kizomys, Dniprovske, Blahovishchenske, Veletenkse, Dariivka, Ivanivka, Oleksandrivka, Mykilske, Poniativka, Tokarivka, Beryslav, Osokorivka, Novovorontsovka, Zolota Balka, Urozhaine, Kostyrka, Burhunka, Havrylivka, Dudchany, Zmiivka, Mykolaivka, Monastyrske, Odradokamianka, Tiahynka, Chervonyi Maiak, Vesele, Kozatske and the city of Kherson. A high-rise building, three private houses and private vehicles were damaged. As a result of russian aggression, 10 people were injured, including one child.

Volyn oblast

The Sporednene Teplo NGO and Rozhyshchensk Multidisciplinary Hospital KP of Rozhyshchensk City Council signed a memorandum of cooperation. This memorandum officially launched the joint implementation of a project to provide rehabilitation services for community residents.

Zakarpattia oblast

At the border crossing point with Slovakia Uzhhorod – Vyshne Nemetske, located in the oblast, a new crossing for pedestrians and cyclists has been put into operation, which has become a component of the Strategy for the Development of Border Infrastructure with the European Union Countries by 2030.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

SMM courses have started for veterans and wives of Heroes. The training, which was attended by 15 participants, is being held in the Veteran PRO regional veteran space.

Lviv oblast

Ukrzaliznytsia has prepared Indestructible Wagons: 4 of them are planned for Lviv oblast. Due to the threat of power outages, railway workers have equipped 100 special wagons that will serve as autonomous heating and communication points. In addition, the carrier has a Food Train – an autonomous kitchen train capable of operating autonomously for 5-7 days and preparing over 10 000 portions of food daily.

Rivne oblast

Khmelnytskyi City Council reported that in 2025, over 100 veteran support specialists were employed in the community.

Ternopil oblast

151 servicemen from Ternopil will receive a one-time cash grant to purchase the necessary equipment. Since the beginning of the year, 253 community defenders have received this assistance, and in 2025, funds were provided to 3,243 soldiers.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Khmelnytskyi’s own cogeneration network provides electricity to the city’s boiler houses. Despite the power outage, the operation of 25 units is fully sufficient to provide Khmelnytskyi residents with centralized heat supply and hot water. The introduction of cogeneration also allows the city to use less diesel fuel for generators at utility companies during power outages.

Chernivtsi oblast

Chernivtsi City Council residents have laid to rest the last rites of Volodymyr Shark, Senior Soldier of the Military Unit A2167, who was killed from a serious wound.
