It has been the 1181 th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

Ukraine’s defence forces are holding back the russian invaders’ offensive. As of now, the total number of combat engagements is 84.

As a result of enemy artillery and mortar shelling, the communities of Porozok, Slavhorod, Vasylivka, Bilokopytove, Bila Bereza, Miropilske, Maryne, Rudak in Sumy oblast; Karpovychi in Chernihiv oblast suffered.

Towards Kharkiv, the enemy attacked the positions of our units twice near Vovchansk and Kutkivka. One combat engagement is still ongoing.

Towards Kupiansk, the enemy did not conduct any offensive actions today.

Towards Lyman, the invading army made 13 attacks on Ukrainian positions near Yampolivka, Zelena Dolyna, Torske and towards Hlushchenkove, Karpivka, Serebrianka, Yampil, Hryhorivka, Ridkodub and Olhivka. Three firefights are still ongoing.

Towards Siversk, in the areas of Verkhnokamianske, Bilohorivka and towards Hryhorivka, the enemy attacked our troops’ positions three times.

Towards Kramatorsk, four firefights took place near Chasiv Yar, Bila Hora and Kurdiumivka. One firefight is still ongoing.

Towards Toretsk, the enemy tried to break through our defences in the areas of Toretsk, Novospaske and towards Dyliivka. Ukrainian defence forces have so far repelled two enemy attacks, and three more combat engagements are ongoing.

Towards Pokrovsk, russian invaders have made 26 attempts to push Ukrainian defenders from their positions in the areas of Myroliubivka, Yelyzavetivka, Lysivka, Udachne, Novoserhiivka, Troitske, Kotliarivka, Andriivka and towards Zoria, Novoukrainka, Stara Mykolaivka, Shevchenko Pershe, Nova Poltavka. Ukrainian defence forces are holding back the enemy’s offensive – 20 attacks have already been repelled, and six more are ongoing.

Ukrainian defenders repelled 11 enemy attacks towards Novopavlivka. The enemy tried to advance in the areas of Kostiantynopil, Pryvilne, Rivne, Vilne Pole and towards Novopil and Zelene Pole.

Towards Huliaipole, the enemy launched air strikes on the settlements of Huliaipole and Malynivka.

Towards Orikhiv, the occupants carried out four attacks in the direction of Mala Tokmachka and near Stepove. Stepnohirsk came under air strikes.

Towards Kherson, enemy units tried to advance once, but were unsuccessful.

The operation towards Kursk continues. Ukrainian troops repelled two enemy attacks today. The invaders’ aircraft carried out six strikes in this area, dropping 17 guided aerial bombs.

No significant changes were recorded in other areas.


Deputy Defence Minister Valerii Churkin said that in April 2025, the Ministry of Defence commissioned more than 120 new weapons. More than 85% of them are domestically produced. The codified weapons include unmanned aerial vehicles, ammunition, electronic warfare equipment, and vehicles. Ukrainian weapon makers have manufactured and tested many communications equipment and ground robotic systems. There are also more than 40 fibre-optic drones approved for operation. 

Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets reported that a 15-year-old boy, who had not seen his father for more than three years, was returned from the TOT. The return took place as part of President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s Bring Kids Back UA initiative. The boy and his mother lived in the TOT of Ukraine. After her death due to illness in 2022, he remained living with his aunt and grandparents.

Kharkiv oblast

Frontline

Towards Kharkiv, russia attacked Ukrainian positions twice near Vovchansk and Kutkivka. According to the General Staff as of 4pm, one combat engagement is ongoing. No offensive actions were recorded towards Kupiansk.

Over the last day, 175 combat engagements were registered. Towards Kharkiv, the enemy stormed the positions of our troops six times in the areas of Vovchansk, Vovchanski Khutory and Stroivka. Towards Kupiansk, two enemy attacks took place over the last day. Defence forces repelled the enemy’s assault towards Nova Kruhliakivka.

Attacks

The press service of Kharkiv regional prosecutor’s office reported that two women aged 45 and 73 were injured as a result of a russian air strike on Starovirivka, Kupiansk region, at 3:15pm. Private and apartment buildings, cars, and the post office were also damaged.

At approximately 11:07am, the enemy fired a Molniya UAV at the Kyivskyi district of Kharkiv. Preliminary, there were no casualties or damage. 

Mayor Ihor Terekhov reported that last week, air raid alerts were announced 24 times in Kharkiv. It lasted almost 30 hours, and over 76 hours in the oblast.

Over the past day, 3 settlements came under hostile attack. A 55-year-old man, a 55-year-old man and a 75-year-old woman were injured in Kupoansk as a result of shelling. The enemy used 4 KAB and 14 Geranium-2 UAVs.

Civilian infrastructure facilities were damaged and destroyed. In Kupiansk region, 30 private houses, 2 outbuildings, a garage, buildings of an agricultural enterprise, a tractor, and 3 trucks were damaged. In Chuhuiv region, a private house, an agricultural enterprise, 4 combine harvesters, a tractor, a bus, and 2 cars were damaged.

Other

The results of the first Generation Nick Prize were announced on 19 May, the birthday of the artist Veronika Kozhushko, who was killed by the russian attack. Liliia Polivoda won the Generation Nick Prize in the literature category, and Sofia Fadeeva won the painting category.

Donetsk oblast

Frontline

Ivan Petrychak, Spokesman of the 24th Brigade, reported that russian troops have increased their offensive capabilities to storm the town of Chasiv Yar. The occupiers are destroying Tsentralnyi neighbourhood with drones and increasing the number of motor vehicles for attacks in urban areas.

Attacks

The russians dropped a 250kg landmine bomb on the private sector of Kramatorsk. People were trapped under the rubble. An 80-year-old woman and a 62-year-old man were injured in the shelling. Rescuers unblocked the victims from the rubble, and police paramedics provided first aid. Preliminarily, 7 private houses were damaged. 

At dawn, the russian military attacked the village of Oleksiievo-Druzhkivka and hit the private sector. Rescuers extinguished the fire in an outbuilding.

Over the last day, police recorded 2,881 hostile attacks along the frontline and in the residential sector. The attacks took place in 10 settlements: Dobropillia, Kostiantynivka, Lyman, Pokrovsk, Rodynske, Novohryhorivka, Chernihivka, Ivanopillia, Illinivka and Shakhove. 17 civilian objects were destroyed, including 7 residential buildings.

Russians dropped two KAB-250 bombs on Illinivka, injuring two civilians and damaging four private houses.

In Kostiantynivka, an enemy drone hit a private house, which caught fire. The drone attack caused damage to the territory of an enterprise in Novohryhorivka in Druzhkivka community.

In Lyman, a russian UAV destroyed a garage and a civilian car, and an attack from a Grad MLRS damaged an educational institution.

The occupiers shelled Rodynske and Chernihivka of Dobropillia community with KAB-250 bombs, damaging 1 private house each. 

In Dobropillia, the enemy hit a service station with a drone, damaging the building, a truck and a barrel for technical water.

In addition, information about a wounded civilian in Myrnohrad who suffered from shelling on 17 May was established.

Other

Petro Andriushchenko, Head of the Centre for the Study of Occupation NGO, reported that Iranian cement is used in construction projects in the temporarily occupied Mariupol.

The Yellow Ribbon resistance movement said that in the  occupied Donetsk, hospitals and clinics compile lists of men under the age of 50. This data is passed to the military commandant’s office for mobilisation into the russian army.

Luhansk oblast

The enemy is not reducing pressure either towards Lyman or Siversk. According to the RMA, on Sunday, our defenders repelled a Russian attack near Hrekivka, Tverdokhlibove and Bilohorivka. At the same time, the occupants had little air support. They used cannon artillery eight times. A total of 164 enemy unmanned aerial vehicles were involved in the fighting.

On 1 February, public transport fares in Luhansk were doubled. In response, they promised to improve the quality of transportation by replacing old with new ones. In particular, by allowing russian carriers to operate instead of local ones. However, more than 3.5 months have passed, and the situation has not changed for the better. Only numerous traffic blockades have been overcome due to the recognition of several bridges as emergency, which the invaders have not paid any attention to over the past 11 years. According to the locals, you can also ignore the traffic schedule, as drivers do not follow it.

After the February change in the leadership of the occupation administration of Siverskodonetsk, regular statements about the alleged mass return of citizens to their homes disappeared. This is because it is not true. For instance, the catastrophic shortage of doctors has not been eliminated. And even basic legal services are hard to come by. Before the full-scale invasion, there were dozens of notaries in the city. Today, there is only one. There is a problem with specialists in almost every area.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

Kyiv City Military Administration has announced that in the new academic year, one of Kyiv’s vocational education institutions will double the number of applicants for the profession of “Operator of Remotely Piloted Vehicles”. More than 100 people will be trained under the regional order. This decision was made in response to the rapidly growing demand for specialists in this field in wartime.

On 17 May, the Ukrainian Women’s Guard held an intensive course for women at Kyiv’s Vcentri HUB Obolon, which combined mine safety and tactical medicine.

Mayor Anatolii Fedoruk reported that Bucha hosted a German Culture Day as part of a visit by a delegation from the twin city of Bergisch Gladbach. The day before, a delegation from Germany, led by Mayor Frank Stein, handed over an emergency vehicle and two fire trucks to the city.

The RMA reported that the All-Ukrainian competition “Valour of the Undefeated” among war veterans was held in Baryshivka.

Bucha recently hosted the charity Bucha Peace Run, a sporting event organised to help Ukrainian defenders. The funds raised will be used to buy a car for the 25th Airborne Brigade, where residents of the town serve.

On 16 May, DJs held a charity music event called Iron Rhythms of Defence at the Central Railway Station in Kyiv. The organisers were raising money for the servicewomen defending Ukraine at the frontline.

Zhytomyr oblast

On 19 May, Zhytomyr City Council announced the presentation of posthumous state awards – the Orders of Bohdan Khmelnytskyi, III degree, and For Courage, III degree – to the families of nine fallen defenders of Ukraine. 

A Park of Remembrance of the Unconquered is being set up near Zviahel in Zhytomyr oblast. For 10 days, participants of the volunteer camp, who came from different cities of Ukraine, worked on the landscaping. They removed rubbish, planted trees, installed a gazebo and plaques in memory of the fallen soldiers.

Sumy oblast

The Regional Military Administration reported that during the night, russian forces attacked Sumy oblast using UAVs. In Shostka community, the infrastructure of one of the enterprises was damaged due to the impact of six drones.

Konotop Regional Military Administration informed that during the night of 19 May, the enemy attacked Popivka community in Konotop region. Two Geran-2 UAVs struck civilian infrastructure targets, reported the.

According to the Regional Military Administration, over the course of 18 May, two people were injured due to enemy UAV attacks. In Shostka community, a 44-year-old enterprise guard was wounded in a drone strike. In Esman community, a 47-year-old resident was injured by a mortar attack. Both victims have been hospitalised.

Oleh Hryhorov, Head of the Regional Military Administration, said that in Sumy oblast, since the beginning of the invasion, nearly 21,000 subscribers have been left without electricity, and almost 10,500 without gas supply.

From the morning of 18 May to the morning of 19 May, russian forces carried out 135 attacks on 24 settlements across 14 territorial communities in the oblast. The highest number of attacks was recorded in Sumy, Shostka, and Konotop regions. The enemy actively used guided aerial bombs (nearly 10 strikes) and UAV-dropped fragmentation munitions (60 drops). Additionally, the enemy launched a missile strike targeting Sumy oblast.

The Regional Military Administration reported that as a result of russian shelling on 18 May, residential buildings were damaged in Khotin community, non-residential premises were affected in Konotop community, and four residential houses, non-residential premises, and a vehicle were hit in Shostka community.

Currently, residents from 202 settlements across 14 communities are subject to mandatory evacuation. So far, nearly 65% of the population — about 56,000 people — have been evacuated. Additionally, 804 children who required mandatory evacuation have been relocated. According to Oleh Hryhorov, Head of the Regional Military Administration, around 90% of evacuees either rent housing independently or stay with relatives. Across the oblast, there are 10,000 beds available for accommodating displaced persons.

Chernihiv oblast

Chernihiv Border Detachment reported that throughout 18 May, russian forces attacked three border communities in Chernihiv oblast: Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka, and Snovsk, using various types of weaponry. They employed guided aerial bombs (2 strikes), Molniia UAVs (5 strikes), FPV-drones (13 strikes), mortars (34 strikes), barrel artillery (37 strikes), and dropped explosive devices from UAVs (18 strikes).

The Department of Civil Protection and Defence Work of Chernihiv Regional Military Administration informed that as a result of an enemy attack on Snovsk community on 18 May, a building caught fire in Tykhonovychi village.

Viacheslav Chaus, Head of the Regional Military Administration, said that over the past week, the enemy carried out 206 attacks across Chernihiv oblast, resulting in 509 explosions. Twenty-six settlements across four districts were targeted.

In Koriukivka region, over the past week, russian forces shelled a border-area lyceum, struck a woodworking enterprise’s hangar, and targeted a truck. In Novhorod-Siverskyi region, attacks by drones and FPV-drones set non-residential private houses and a farm building on fire. In Pryluky region, a residential house was damaged by a UAV explosion. In Chernihiv region, a russian drone struck a hangar.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

During the night, Ukrainian air defence forces were active and destroyed 5 enemy UAVs.

The russian troops targeted Nikopol region in the evening, at night and in the morning. Kamikaze drones struck Marhanets and Myrove communities. According to updated information, the 18 May attack on Hrusivka community of Kryvyi Rih region damaged 7 private houses, 2 vehicles, a rototiller, a moped, a power line and a gas pipeline.

During the day, russian forces launched several attacks on Nikopol region by kamikaze drones and artillery. The regional centre, Marhanets and Pokrov communities, came under attack. In Nikopol, 2 high-rise buildings, 2 private houses, a utility structure, an industrial facility and a power line were damaged. Updated reports confirm that a nighttime drone attack triggered a fire in Malomykhailivka community of Synelnykove region, damaging several private houses.

Vinnytsia oblast

​Mayor Serhii Morhunov reported that Vinnytsia has received over 19 tonnes of humanitarian aid from its partners in Karlsruhe, Germany. The shipment included medical examination couches, wheelchairs, furniture and over 19 tonnes of construction materials.

Kirovohrad oblast

Andrii Raikovych, Head of the RMA, stated that in the morning of 19 May, russian drones attacked Kirovohrad oblast. Explosions were reported in Kropyvnytskyi region. There were no injuries reported. 

Poltava oblast

A memorial ceremony will be held in Kremenchuk for soldier Vitalii Buha, who was killed on 10 May 2025, in a drone attack in Kherson oblast. He was 42 years old.

Cherkasy oblast

Ihor Taburets, Head of the RMA, informed that air defence forces in Cherkasy oblast destroyed 8 Shahed drones. There were no injuries or infrastructure damage.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Yesterday, 18 May, the occupiers carried out 421 attacks on 11 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast. The enemy launched six airstrikes on Huliaipole and Novoandriivka. 208 UAVs of various types targeted Kushuhum, Lobkove, Kamianske, Huliaipole, Shcherbaky, Novodanylivka, Mala Tokmachka, Charivne, Novodarivka, and Robotyne. Six MLRS attacks hit Kamianske, Huliaipole, Mala Tokmachka, and Novodanylivka. There were 201 artillery strikes on Lobkove, Kamianske, Huliaipole, Shcherbaky, Novodanylivka, Mala Tokmachka, Charivne, and Novodarivka. Two reports of vehicle damage were received.

It is reported that the occupiers launched four attacks near Mala Tokmachka and Stepove towards Orikhiv.

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine allocated UAH 298m of state subsidies for restoring four facilities in Zaporizhzhia oblast that were damaged due to russian shelling.

The First Regional Sports Games 2025 began in Zaporizhzhia for war veterans, combatants, and their family members. The first stage of the games was a powerlifting championship. The powerlifting competition was held in four weight categories – up to 59, 83, 105, and 120 kilograms. The maximum weight lifted by veterans was 130 kilograms.

Mykolaiv oblast

Last night, 18 May, the enemy attacked the outskirts of Mykolaiv with a strike drone, the type of which is still being identified. Windows and the facade of a private house were damaged.

On 18 May and this morning, May 19, at 4:30pm and 5:34am, the enemy attacked the waters of Ochakiv community with FPV drones. Also, on the morning of 19 May, the russians carried out two artillery strikes on Kutsurub community. As a result of one of the attacks two private houses were damaged in the village of Dniprovske.

Traffic will be blocked on 20 and 21 May near the city of Snihurivka due to the disposal of ammunition and demining of fields.

Pyrotechnic units of the State Emergency Service are inspecting and clearing the waters of the Inhul and Southern Bug rivers as part of preparations for the summer season. Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, pyrotechnicians of the State Emergency Service in Mykolaiv oblast destroyed over 28,000 explosive objects. In total, rescuers cleared more than 11,000 hectares of the region, including over 3,350 hectares of water areas.

Odesa oblast

The Security Service of Ukraine conducted a successful combined special operation against russian military targets in the Black Sea. Using aerial and naval drones, they destroyed a russian Neva-type radar system used for monitoring surface and air activity. They also eliminated storage facilities and a residential module on the platform.

As of 6am on 19 May, 3 enemy ships were stationed in the Mediterranean Sea, including 1 carrier of Kalibr cruise missiles, with a total salvo capacity of up to 8 missiles.

Over the past day, 5 vessels passed through the Kerch Strait into the Black Sea in russia’s interests, while 8 more ships entered the Sea of Azov.

The reconstruction of the nine-story building in Serhiivka, damaged by a russian attack on 1 July 2022, is in its final stages. Specialists are currently working on landscaping the surrounding area. The Restoration and Infrastructure Development Service in Odesa oblast completed the installation of all engineering networks and communication systems, restored the building’s structure, insulated and painted the facade, and renovated the interior walls of the entrances. Elevators, ramps, and handrails were installed in all entrances. The roof was repaired. Linoleum and baseboards were laid in apartment rooms, walls painted, doors installed, and bathrooms equipped. The bomb shelter was fully outfitted. Reconstruction began at the end of 2023.

Kherson oblast

A critical infrastructure worker was injured in Kherson by a russian drone strike. At the time of the attack, the 66-year-old man was inside a tractor. He sustained blast trauma, a concussion, and a shrapnel wound to his forehead.

Around 10:30am, russian forces attacked a farm in Kostyrka with a drone. A 27-year-old worker was injured, suffering blast trauma and shrapnel wounds to his legs.

At approximately 9:30am, the russian army targeted a civilian car in Tavriiskyi neighborhood of Kherson. A 23-year-old man inside the vehicle sustained blast trauma, a concussion, and shrapnel wounds to his neck and back.

Another man sought medical attention after being injured in a russian shelling in Kherson the previous day. He was diagnosed with blast trauma and a concussion.

A 65-year-old woman injured in a russian strike on 17 May also required medical help. She was diagnosed with blast trauma and a fractured radius bone.

Yesterday, russians attacked multiple settlements including Kozatske, Vesele, Novooleksandrivka, Stanislav, Antonivka, Honcharne, Tiahynka, Odradokamianka, Olhivka, Mykolaivka, Shyroka Balka, Shliakhove, Oleksandrivka, Beryslav, Urozhaine, Novoberyslav, Zmiivka, Poniativka, Prydniprovke, Bilozerka, Sadove, Vysoke, Burhunka, Veletenske, Dudchany, Zolota Balka, Ivanivka, Kizomys, Mykilske, Mykhailivka, Novotiahynka, Osokorivka, Sofiivka, Stepanivka, Tokarivka, Chervonyi Maiak, and the city of Kherson. As a result of the attacks, two apartment buildings, 17 private homes, a factory, a cell tower, a garage, and private cars were damaged. Between 12 and 18 May, russian forces launched 1,951 drone attacks on the right bank of Kherson oblast; 1,623 of these drones were destroyed by Ukrainian forces.

It is reported that russian units attempted to advance once towards Kherson but failed—the attack was repelled. Over the past 24 hours, enemy losses amounted to 95 personnel, 2 cannons, 2 mortars, 13 vehicles, 2 Shahed-136 drones, 3 motorcycles, 1 ATV, 1 boat, 2 generators, 4 Starlink antennas, and 4 communication antennas. Ukrainian forces also destroyed 102 dugouts/shelters, 4 ammunition storage sites, and 1 UAV command post.

A 15-year-old boy was successfully returned to Ukrainian-controlled territory from the temporarily occupied left bank of Kherson oblast. His mother had died of illness, and he had been living with his aunt and grandparents. His father contacted the Office of the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights. The family was reunited through the efforts of that office, with support from the State of Qatar under President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s “Bring Kids Back” initiative.

An interactive tour was held at Kherson Regional Museum of Local History in honor of International Museum Day. The once-empty display cases, looted by russian forces, now feature artifacts acquired over the past two years. The museum is continuing to build a new exhibition even during the war.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

Projector Foundation, the Algorithm of Actions platform and the Abo Abo center of creative industries, are launching the Identities project, which will provide scholarships for training in creative fields. The project is open to military personnel, veterans and their partners living in Lutsk or Volyn oblast.

Zakarpattia oblast

Uzhhorod City Council honored soldiers from Uzhhorod and Uzhhorod region who gave their lives for the country, its freedom, independence, and territorial integrity. The II degree For Courage Order was awarded to Senior Sergeant Serhii Chernikov, Commander of the Machine Gun Fire Support Section (the Military Unit A1778) and Senior Private Myroslav Bren, a serviceman of the Mortar Platoon (the Military Unit A1778).

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

At the beginning of the year, Ivano-Frankivsk community approved UAH 2m for the 13th Brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine Charter. And there was also a subvention of UAH 400,000 for pilots.

Lviv oblast

In Lviv, the Unbroken Center has expanded by 2 more floors, where servicemen with serious injuries are already receiving assistance. The 4th and 5th floors were added above the First Military Medical Center polyclinic, increasing the ward capacity by 74 beds.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy awarded the Defender from Sokal region the For the Defense of Ukraine medal. Andrii serves in the ranks of the Marine Corps airborne assault troops.

Rivne oblast

The RMA reported that this year, Rivne Region Resilience Centers provided services to 54,000 visitors.

Ternopil oblast

Ternopil military personnel will receive a one-time cash grant for equipment. In 2024, 3,198 servicemen received such assistance.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Khmelnytskyi community sent 12 DJI MATRICE 4T quadcopters to the military for UAH 2.4m. This is a new model of quadcopters, which has already received good reviews from the soldiers. The 2nd batch has already been handed over.

Chernivtsi oblast

On 23-25 May 2025, the city of Chernivtsi will host an International Boxing Tournament dedicated to the memory of the fallen Ukrainian athletes-soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This year, the tournament will also have a special dedication – it will be held in honor of the defenders of the Azov Regiment, who heroically defended Azovstal and were captured. Many of them are still in russian prisons, where they are held in inhumane conditions.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

The Danish Ministry of Defense announced the 26th package of military assistance to Ukraine worth over $628m, designed for 2025-2028. The assistance includes artillery guns, ammunition (including through the Czech initiative), equipment for combat aircraft, and the expansion of the training base.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, met with Anthony Albenizi, Australian Prime Minister. They discussed defense support for Ukraine and cooperation within the coalition of the willing.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, met with Karin Keller-Sutter, Swiss President, in Rome. They discussed the need for a ceasefire, increased pressure on russia, humanitarian demining, the implementation of school feeding projects and the construction of shelters in Ukrainian schools, as well as the participation of Swiss companies in the reconstruction of Ukraine.
