It has been the 1332nd day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

On 17 October, there were 111 combat engagements on the frontline.

Ukrainian defenders are firmly repelling russian attempts to advance deeper into Ukrainian territory, inflicting significant losses on the enemy.

Throughout the day, russian forces carried out 78 airstrikes, dropping 154 guided bombs, and deployed over 3,200 kamikaze drones. In total, Ukrainian military positions and populated areas were hit by 3,834 attacks.

Towards Northern Sloboda and Kursk, Ukrainian troops repelled two enemy assaults. The Russian forces launched six airstrikes, dropped 14 guided bombs, and conducted 147 shelling attacks, including two from multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS).

Towards Southern Sloboda, the enemy launched 15 assaults on Ukrainian positions near Vovchansk and toward the settlements of Bolohivka, Kutkivka, Obukhivka, and Kolodiazne. Two clashes are ongoing.

Towards Kupiansk, russian forces attempted to advance near Pishchane, Petropavlivka, and Kupiansk. Six out of seven attacks were successfully repelled; one battle continues.

Towards Lyman, the occupiers carried out 12 assaults in the vicinity of Hrekivka, Karpivka, Torske, Shandryholove, and Drobysheve, as well as Korovii Yar. Two clashes are still underway.

Towards Sloviansk, Ukrainian defenders repelled seven enemy attacks near Pereizne, Hryhorivka, Dronivka, and Yampil.

Towards Kramatorsk, there were no offensive actions were recorded today.

Towards Kostiantynivka, the enemy attempted 11 assaults on Ukrainian positions near Torske, Shcherbynivka, Rusyn Yar, and Kostiantynivka and Berestok.

Towards Pokrovsk, the hottest sector of the front, the enemy attempted 33 assaults near Shakhove, Nykanorivka, Rodynske, Chervonyi Lyman, Myrnohrad, Novoeconomichne, Lysivka, Zvirove, Kotlyne, and other settlements. One engagement is still ongoing.

56 russian soldiers were eliminated, including 41 killed in action. Ukrainian forces also destroyed one vehicle and 19 UAVs, and damaged an enemy drone command post.

Towards Oleksandrivka, the enemy attempted 12 assaults near Orestopil, Oleksandrohrad, Sichneve, Novomykolaivka, Novohryhorivka, Vesele, and Malynivka. One clash is ongoing.

Towards Huliaipole, there were no offensive actions.
Towards Orikhiv, supported by aviation, russian forces attacked three times near Kamianske and Stepove.
Towards Kherson, the enemy made one failed attempt to approach Ukrainian positions near Antonivskyi Bridge.

Heroes of the Day

The 34th Separate Coastal Defense Brigade distinguished itself today, effectively destroying enemy personnel and equipment, inflicting heavy losses on russian forces.

No significant changes were reported in other front areas.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

Frontline

The General Staff reported that the russian federation attacked seven times near Vovchansk and Obukhivka and Kolodiazne. Three more combat clashes are still ongoing. Six times russians wanted to advance in the vicinity of Pishchane and Petropavlivka, as well as in the direction of Kupyansk, one battle is ongoing.

Over the past day, 178 combat clashes were recorded.

Towards Southern Sloboda, there were 15 combat clashes near Vovchansk, Vovchanski Khutory, Kamianka and towards Kolodiazne, Bolohivka, and Kutkivka.

Towards Kupiansk, there were 13 attacks. The defense forces repelled the enemy’s assault actions in the vicinity of the settlements of Petropavlivka, Pishchane, Bohuslavka, Kurylivka and Borova.

Shelling

The city of Kharkiv and 7 settlements of the oblast were subjected to enemy strikes. 4 people were injured as a result of the shelling.

In the village of Bilyi Kolodiaz, Vovchansk community, a 24-year-old man was injured; in the city of Kupiansk, a 77-year-old man and a 50-year-old woman were injured.

It also became known that as a result of the shelling on October 15, a 58-year-old woman died in the village of Novoosinove, Kuryliv community, and a 75-year-old woman was injured in the city of Kupiansk.

The enemy attacked a UAV in Kyivsky district of Kharkiv.

The enemy actively used various types of weapons:

▪️2 missiles (type is being determined);

▪️2 GABs;

▪️1 UAV of the Geran-2 type;

▪️4 UAVs of the Molniya type;

▪️2 FPV drones;

▪️1 UAV (type to be determined).

Civil infrastructure facilities were damaged and destroyed:

▪️In Chuhuiv region, a car was damaged (village of Buhaivka), 3 cars (village of Martove);

▪️In Bohodukhiv region, a warehouse of an agricultural enterprise, 6 private houses, and an electrical network were damaged (village of Skovorodinivka);

▪️In Kupiansk region, a car was damaged (city of Kupiansk).

Other

The transit evacuation point in Lozova accepted 183 people. 61 people remained. A total of 7,923 people have been registered at the Point since it began operating.

The regional prosecutor’s office reported that two russian servicemen who tortured a policeman during the occupation of Izium have been identified. The victim was repeatedly punched and kicked all over his body, tortured with electric shocks, strangled by putting a harness around his neck and cutting off his oxygen supply, and beaten with an iron rod and rubber batons. For several days, the attackers illegally detained the policeman in the basement of the garage, where they constantly tortured him, forcing him to provide information about the whereabouts of Ukrainian military personnel, law enforcement officers, and ATO veterans.

Viacheslav Zadorenko, Head of the community, reported that russian military personnel continue to mine Derhachi community with “deceptive firewood” with explosives: at least three such cases were recorded in Kozacholopany region.

Donetsk oblast

The General Staff said that russian troops attacked four times towards Slaviansk, there were 10 assaults the day before. The occupiers’ units tried to advance in the vicinity of the settlements of Serebrianka, Yampil and Zvanivka. They carried out the largest number of attacks towards Pokrovsk – 55, towards Oleksandrivka – 33,  and towards Kostiantynivka – 23.

Volodymyr Holiahin, Head of the communications department of the 81st separate airmobile Slobozhansk brigade, says that towards Slaviansk, russian troops continue to actively attempt to advance, mostly operating in small groups and trying to catch the Ukrainian defenders by surprise. They also use FPV drones, bombers and strike UAVs of the Krylo, Molniya, and Lancet types. Towards Serebrianka, there is an expansion of the “gray zone”.

The RMA reports that russian troops shelled Kramatorsk at night and in the morning. Around midnight, russian troops launched three strikes on an industrial zone. According to preliminary information, there were no casualties. At 04:48, russian troops launched a strike with a Molniya-2 UAV on an open area in one of the city’s neighborhoods.

On October 16, there were  2,009 russian attacks on the front line and residential sector.

11 settlements were under fire: the cities of Druzhkivka, Kostiantynivka, Kramatorsk, Lyman, Mykolaivka, Sloviansk, the villages of Oleksiivo-Druzhkivka, Raihorodok, Krynytsia, Myrne, and Oleksandrivka.

53 civilian objects were damaged, including 43 residential buildings.

russians dropped a GAB-250 bomb on Raihorodok, injuring three people, including an 11-year-old boy. The child with injuries to his eyes, face, and body was sent to Dnipro hospital. 16 private houses and a civilian car were destroyed.

The enemy struck Druzhkivka 9 times with a GAB and a Lancet UAV. A civilian was injured, 2 apartment buildings and 10 private houses, 2 educational institutions, and a civilian car were damaged.

Three people were injured in Krynytsia, Novodonetsk community, as a result of a drone attack, and a car was damaged.

In Myrne, Pokrovsk region, two civilians were injured as a result of a Geran-2 UAV strike.

The occupiers attacked Kostiantynivka with two GAB-250 bombs, destroying an apartment building and an educational institution. Two more bombs exploded in Oleksiivo-Druzhkivka, damaging 13 private homes.

In addition, information was established about a deceased civilian in Hannivka, Pokrovsky district, who was killed during shelling on October 15.

In the village of Khrestishche, Sviatohorsk community, which is 20 kilometers from the frontline, 350 residents remain. According to the village headman, before the full-scale invasion, almost 700 people lived in Khrestishche, twice as many as now. 70 children remain in the village.

Luhansk oblast

Towards Lyman and Sloviansk, the invaders tried to advance 15 times. They attacked near ten settlements. Ukrainian defenders are holding back these enemy attempts. russians also used 25 unmanned aerial vehicles. In three cases, they fired artillery shells.

Two months after the disappearance of gasoline from gas stations, the Gauleiter of the so-called “lpr” decided to sign a decree on taking measures to stabilize the fuel market. The occupation administration has also finally noticed the rise in prices and “signs of shortage.” The lack of gasoline there is not associated with the all-russian crisis and the shutdown of a number of refineries. In their opinion, the organizers of speculative schemes are to blame for everything, due to which the shortage in the occupied Luhansk region was artificially created. In addition, they threaten to block online content that talks about the lack of gasoline in the region.

By January 1, the invaders are demanding that car owners in the so-called “lpr” change their registration documents, state license plates, and driver’s licenses to russian ones. Starting in 2026, vehicles that have not been re-registered will be considered foreign goods by the invaders. That is, all procedures provided for imported vehicles will apply to them. The presence of a russian passport is mandatory for these procedures.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

According to the Mobile Rapid Response Rescue Centre of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, in the Vyshgorod district near the Desna River, the warhead of a modern high-frequency and low-profile X-69 winged missile was found. Sappers defused and removed the warhead of the russian missile.

In one of the villages in the Bucha district, sappers from the Kyiv oblast’s special-purpose emergency rescue unit have already cleared half of the planned 10.5 hectares of field using mechanised equipment. Pyrotechnicians have also begun work in the adjacent forest area, where clearance is being carried out manually using sapper probes and metal detectors.

The State Emergency Service of Kyiv oblast reported that more than 38,500 hectares of territory have been demined in Kyiv oblast, including almost 8,444 hectares of agricultural land, since the beginning of the russian federation’s armed aggression against Ukraine. During this year, more than 6,351 hectares of agricultural land have been inspected, of which 1,322 hectares demined. 

Currently, 33 cogeneration plants with a total capacity of over 71.6 MW are operating in the region. Of these, 20 power-generating plants have already been launched this year. According to the Regional State Administration, their capacity reached 55.4 MW. They have proven their necessity and effectiveness by providing electricity and heat to various economic entities.

Zhytomyr oblast

Zhytomyroblenergo reported  that by their orders, the emergency power cut schedule for Zhytomyr oblast was cancelled on 17 October.

Another evacuation train arrived in Berdychiv from the frontline territories, transporting 30 elderly people and persons with disabilities – residents of a geriatric nursing home. The coordinated work of all services made it possible to quickly organise a warm welcome and necessary support for everyone, as well as safe living conditions. Fifteen people will stay at the Berdychiv geriatric nursing home, and 15 people will stay at Korosten nursing home.

Sumy oblast

On the morning of 17 October, russian forces struck a non-residential building in Sumy by guided aerial bombs, injuring a 56-year-old man who was hospitalised. According to Serhii Kryvosheienko, Head of the City Military Administration, the attack damaged a civilian infrastructure facility, a non-residential building, and several apartment blocks. A funeral service facility was also hit, with gravestones destroyed.

Earlier that morning, an enemy strike drone hit a truck near Trostianets community. The 38-year-old driver was injured and hospitalised; doctors report his condition as stable.

Between the morning of 16 October and the morning of 17 October 2025, russian forces conducted 112 attacks on 47 settlements across 19 territorial communities in the oblast. The highest number of strikes occurred in Sumy and Shostka regions. The enemy actively used guided aerial bombs (10 strikes), multiple launch rocket systems (nearly 20 strikes), dropped explosive grenades from UAVs (over 10 strikes), and launched attacks using FPV and other drones. Over the past 24 hours, air-raid alerts in the region lasted for 12 hours and 37 minutes.

Consequences of russian attacks in Sumy oblast as of the morning of 17 October:

  • In Krasnopillia community, a 38-year-old man was killed in a russian drone explosion. Two other men, aged 58 and 56, were injured. A truck and a car were damaged.

  • In Sumy community, a 56-year-old man was injured in an airstrike involving guided aerial bombs. A civilian infrastructure facility, a non-residential building, and apartment blocks were damaged.

  • In Bilopillia community, a 54-year-old woman was injured in a drone attack on 15 October.

  • In Mykolaivka rural community, a private house was damaged.

  • In Richky community, a civilian infrastructure facility was damaged.

During the day, local authorities, together with units of the State Emergency Service, the National Police, and public organisations from border communities, evacuated five people.

 The Regional Military Administration reported that as of 1 October 2025, the Commission for Business Assistance approved financial aid for 77 entrepreneurs in the oblast, totalling UAH 8.2 m.. Among them, 48 businesses affected by hostilities, 22 entrepreneurs who purchased energy equipment, and five businesses received compensation for expenses related to internal relocation.

The Regional Military Administration informed that more than 11,000 households in Sumy oblast have received winter assistance from international donors. In total, 11,040 households have been supported.

Chernihiv oblast

Dmytro Bryzhynskyi, Head of Chernihiv City Military Administration, reported that one person was injured in the attack. The 52-year-old man is currently being treated in the surgical department of City Hospital No. 2. According to the Regional Prosecutor’s Office, the injured man is a locomotive driver. Rolling stock was also damaged.

Oleksandr Seliverstov, Head of Novhorod-Siverskyi Regional Military Administration, said that during the night of 17 October, russian forces attacked Novhorod-Siverskyi by strike drones. The attack caused a fire at a civilian logging enterprise. According to the North Operational Command, equipment, garages, and storage facilities belonging to the enterprise were damaged.

Viacheslav Chaus, Head of the Regional Military Administration, informed that in the afternoon of 16 October, an enemy drone attacked the residential sector in Semenivka, damaging the façade and windows of a residential building, fences at two households, and local residents’ cars.

According to the Regional Military Administration, restoration work on power network facilities continues. Hourly power outage schedules remain in effect across the oblast.

Chernihiv Border Detachment reported that throughout 16 October, russian forces attacked four border communities in Chernihiv oblast — Novhorod-Siverska, Semenivska, Horodnyanska, and Snovska. The enemy carried out shelling using SPG-9 (two explosions), automatic grenade launchers (six explosions), mortars (39 explosions), multiple launch rocket systems (28 explosions), and artillery (26 explosions). It also conducted drone strikes (seven explosions), FPV drone attacks (32 explosions), and dropped explosive devices from UAVs (11 explosions). Twenty settlements came under enemy fire.

 The State Emergency Service informed that in Chernihiv oblast, part of a russian X-101 cruise missile was discovered in a forest. Sappers safely transported the munition to a designated site, where it was destroyed in a controlled detonation.

According to the State Environmental Inspectorate in Chernihiv oblast, as a result of a russian strike on an enterprise in Nizhyn region, fuel caught fire. The attack destroyed technological equipment and ignited fuel materials. The fire covered an area of approximately 400 square metres and burned for about nine hours. Around 500 tonnes of harmful substances were released into the atmosphere, causing environmental damage estimated at over UAH 2.6m..

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovsk Regional Council reported that defenders shot down 22 enemy drones.

In the evening and overnight, the occupiers continued attacking Nikopol region by artillery and drones, targeting the district centre and Pokrovske community. In the latter, two women aged 69 and 89 were injured. Across the region, three apartment buildings, four private houses, and three cars were damaged. According to updated information, an artillery strike on Nikopol the previous day caused a fire that destroyed a private house and injured an 84-year-old woman.

The enemy also launched guided aerial bomb attacks on Pokrovske community in Synelnykove region, damaging infrastructure and vehicles. Pavlohrad was hit by a drone strike, which caused a fire and damaged infrastructure.

The occupiers carried out several more attacks on Nikopol region using artillery and drones, targeting the regional centre and Pokrovsk community. An apartment building was damaged.

Poltava oblast

Ruslan Ustymenko, a serviceman from Lubny community, was killed while defending Ukraine. He served as a radio electronic intelligence operator in a special operations group of “Kryla Omehy” (Wings of Omega) unmanned systems unit of the National Guard of Ukraine. The soldier died in the line of duty.

Cherkasy oblast

A memorial fair dedicated to fallen soldier Yaroslav Strilets opened in Cherkasy. Visitors could purchase baked goods and sweets in exchange for donations. The funds raised will be used to install a memorial plaque in his honour and publish a book about his life.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

On 17 October, russian forces attacked Polohy region. A police officer was injured as a result of the shelling.

On 16 October, the occupiers carried out 618 strikes on 18 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast. russian forces launched 9 air strikes on Stepnohirsk, Zaliznychne, Uspenivka, Solodke, and Poltavka. Four hundred eleven UAVs of various types (mostly FPV) attacked Malokaterynivka, Komyshuvakha, Bilenke, Novoukrainka, Chervonodniprovka, Prymorske, Stepove, Huliaipole, Novodanylivka, Mala Tokmachka, and Charivne. Three MLRS attacks were carried out on Novoyakovlivka, Novoandrivka, and Poltavka. One hundred ninety-five artillery strikes were launched on Prymorske, Stepove, Huliaipole, Novodanylivka, Mala Tokmachka, and Charivne. Twenty-six reports were received about damage to housing, cars, and infrastructure facilities.

Twenty-two people injured as a result of enemy shelling remain in medical institutions in Zaporizhzhia. Doctors assess the condition of five people as serious. Among them is a 17-year-old girl from Novopavlivka who was injured on 12 October. Sixteen people are in moderate condition.

On 17 October, the enemy advanced in the area of the settlement of Kamianske towards Orikhiv. On 16 October, the Defense Forces of Ukraine repelled five russian attacks towards Huliaipole and one more towards Orikhiv.

Emergency outage schedules and power limitation schedules are in effect for industry and business in Zaporizhzhia oblast. Currently, consumption limits do not apply to household consumers.

Mykolaiv oblast

Head of Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration Vitalii Kim confirmed that on 16 October, Mykolaiv was attacked with guided aerial bombs. The enemy attacked Mykolaiv with two guided aerial bombs from a Su-34 aircraft from the Black Sea. This is the first time since the beginning of the war that the outskirts of the city were attacked with guided aerial bombs.

Yesterday, the enemy attacked Ochakiv and Kutsurub communities five times with FPV drones. At night, it carried out a strike, presumably with multiple launch rocket systems, on Voskresenske community. There were no casualties.

The southern defense forces destroyed a BM-30 Smerch. It was used to shell Mykolaiv oblast for the last three months.

Odesa oblast

The father of fallen defender of Ukraine Andrii Perzhu, Vitalii Yefymovych, was presented with his son’s posthumous award in Odesa oblast. In 2024, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, awarded the defender the Order for Courage II Class, but the soldier did not have time to receive this award. The fighter’s life was cut short on 16 March as a result of a mortar attack.

Kherson oblast

On the morning of 17 October, russian occupiers shelled Dniprovskyi district of Kherson. Two people were injured. A 56-year-old man sustained a blast injury and shrapnel wounds to his leg. A 75-year-old man suffered a blast injury and concussion.

Two more people were injured in Kherson as a result of russian shelling. At around 10:00, an 82-year-old woman was hit in downtown. She received a concussion, blast, and closed head trauma. Around 10:30, the enemy struck Dniprovskyi district again, injuring a 63-year-old man who suffered a concussion, blast and closed head trauma, as well as shrapnel wounds to his head, neck, arm, and torso.

Kherson Regional Military Administration reported that russian occupiers shelled one of the museums in Kherson. As a result of the strikes, the main building and other non-residential premises were damaged, and a car was also wrecked.

Another museum in Kherson was damaged in the enemy attack. The facade and roof were destroyed.

On 16 October, the russian forces attacked Kherson, Antonivka, Stanislav, Kizomys, Sadove, Dniprovske, Rozlyv, Prydniprovske, Zelenivka, Inzhenerne, Tomyna Balka, Komyshany, Mykilske, Sofiivka, Chaikyne, Beryslav, Kostyrka, Vysoke, Mala Oleksandrivka, Olhivka, Burhunka, Odradokamianka, Lvove, Vysoke, Matrosivka, Tiahynka, and Kozatske. Twenty-six sites were damaged: seven apartment buildings and eight private houses, an educational and two medical institutions, a critical infrastructure facility, a church, a memorial stele, a bank branch, three vehicles, and a farm building. One person was killed and 14 were injured in the russian attacks, including a child and two police officers.

As of 16:00 on 17 October, the enemy attempted once—unsuccessfully—to approach the positions of Ukrainian defenders in the area of the Antonivskyi Bridge towards Kherson.

Volyn oblast

The RMA held a meeting with Jiri Borcel, Consul General of the Czech Republic in Lviv. The discussion focused on current areas of cooperation – from humanitarian aid to investment opportunities.

Zakarpattia oblast

The RMA held a meeting of Zakarpattia Regional Tripartite Socio-Economic Council. They discussed the implementation of the Regional Socio-Economic Development Program, business support, job creation and investment attraction. Special attention was paid to international cooperation and the role of the ILO in strengthening social dialogue in the context of Ukraine’s recovery.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Another trip to the picturesque Prykarpattia region was organized for the parents of the Defenders as part of the Caring for the Hero’s Family project. This time, over 30 participants from Ivano-Frankivsk community spent a day surrounded by authentic Hutsul culture.

Lviv oblast

Thanks to the charity fair held on Ukraine’s Independence Day in Peremyshlyany, they raised over UAH 137,000, which has already been sent to the April volunteer fund to purchase pickup trucks for the Kholodniy Yar brigade.

During a charity concert held in Obroshin community, over UAH 30,000 was raised for the military.

The Our Song is Our Weapon charity festival was held in Pustomyty, during which over UAH 17,000 were raised through joint efforts.

Rivne oblast

In Rivne oblast, projects are being implemented within the framework of the Interreg NEXT Poland-Ukraine 2021-2027 program. The European Union is ready to allocate EUR 1.2m for the implementation of a project to modernize drainage systems and improve wastewater management. Rivne is implementing this project in cooperation with the Polish city of Lublin.

Ternopil oblast

The RMA held a meeting with Nataliia Kalmykova, Minister of Veterans Affairs of Ukraine. They discussed key issues of veteran policy in the oblast – medical care, quality of services for veterans, and improving the work of veteran support assistants.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Khmelnytskyi City Council has increased the Grant Support Program for Defense Projects to UAH 13m. This includes hexacopters, quadcopters, airplanes, ground robotic complexes, repeaters, etc. to the military.

Chernivtsi oblast

The 651st Separate Anti-Aircraft Machine Gun Battalion received 11 modern electronic warfare systems from Chernivtsi community.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Germany has officially announced a new package of military aid to Ukraine worth over EUR 2bn.

  • Patriot air defense systems, two additional IRIS-T systems with a large number of guided missiles.
  • The supply of radar complexes to strengthen air defense, artillery systems with high-precision weapons, missiles and ammunition is planned.
  • Ukraine will receive portable anti-aircraft systems, modern communications equipment, anti-tank weapons and small arms.
  • A separate item is the modernization of weapons that have already been transferred to Ukraine earlier – to extend their service life and adapt them to war conditions.
  • The package includes cooperation between the defense industry of Ukraine and Germany (planned memorandum).
