War in Ukraine today: latest news, 17 October, 2024 (photo)

It has been the 967th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression.

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 4 pm:   

Over 120 combat engagements have taken place since the beginning of the day. The occupiers continue to use aviation, in particular UAVs, and carry out attacks in almost all directions of the east and south of our country, especially towards Pokrovsk and Kurakhove. Our soldiers are holding the line and taking all necessary measures to prevent a breakthrough in the defence.

The occupiers continue to use artillery and aircraft in Chernihiv and Sumy oblasts. Bezsalivka, Bachivsk, Sytne, Vysoke, Krasnopillia, Vovkivka, Hirsk, Buchky, Vilna Sloboda, Myropillia, Pokrovka, Shalyhyne, Malushine, Hremiach, Bleshnia and Oleksandrivka were under enemy attack. Enemy aircraft also struck in the area of Myropillia, dropping two guided aerial bombs.

According to the available information, russians launched four airstrikes on the territory of Kursk oblast of the russian federation, using ten UAVs.

Towards Kharkiv, there were three combat engagements. Our troops repelled enemy attacks near Vovchansk and Starytsia. The enemy also launched two airstrikes near Pysarivka and Staryi Saltiv, dropping four combat vehicles.

Towards Kupiansk, nine assault attacks were repelled by our troops near Holubivka, Stepova Novoselivka, Kolisnykivka, Lozova and Nadiia. There were three more firefights near Dzherelne and Lozova.

Towards Lyman, the enemy was attacking near Hrekivka, Druzheliubivka, Katerynivka, Novomykhailivka, Novosadove, Nevske, Torske, Serebrianka and Bilohorivka. In total, there have been 16 combat engagements in this sector since the beginning of the day, six of which are still ongoing.

Towards SIversk, the invaders are actively using aviation. Siversk and Zvanivka were attacked by UAVs.

Towards Kramatorsk, fighting continues in the areas of Hryhorivka, Minkivka, Chasiv Yar and Ivanivske, where the enemy is trying to advance on the positions of Ukrainian defenders.

Towards Toretsk, the enemy attacked Ukrainian troops’ positions six times. At present, fighting continues near Toretsk, Nelipivka and Shcherbanivka.  

Towards Pokrovsk, fierce fighting continues near Sukha Balka, Promin, Sukhyi Yar, Lysivka and Selydove. So far, the enemy has made 23 attempts to storm Ukrainian positions.

Towards Kurakhove, ten combat engagements are the most intense in the areas of Izmailivka, Novodmytrivka, Kurakhove, Antonivka, Kostiantynivka and Vodiane. Another 22 enemy attacks in the areas of Zoriane, Horoste, Heorhiivka and Katerynivka have already been repelled by our defenders.

Towards Vremivka, five enemy assaults near Bohoiavlenka were repelled, and one enemy attack is ongoing.

Towards Orikhiv, the invaders are using aviation near Novodanylivka.

Towards Kherson, our defenders repelled one enemy attack.


The press service of the Ministry of Digital Transformation reported that Ukraine has increased drone production by 10 times. Production capacity increased from 300,000 drones in 2023 to 4m in 2024.

The press service of the World Bank informed that by the end of 2024, the Ukrainian economy will grow by 3.2%. Ukraine’s GDP will grow by 2% in 2025 and 7% in 2026.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

The General Staff said that over fifty attacks were repelled by the Ukrainian Armed Forces towards Kurakhove.

Towards Pokrovsk, Ukrainian troops repelled 15 attacks near Promin, Krutyi Yar and Selydove. The invaders were most active near Selydove.

Towards Kurakhove, Ukrainian Armed Forces repelled 52 attacks near Tsukuryne, Novoselydivka, Hirnyk, Heorhiivka and Vodiane.

Kharkiv oblast

The General Staff reported that as of 4pm towards Kupiansk, three battles are ongoing, Ukrainian troops have already repelled nine attacks near Holubivka, Stepova Novoselivka, Kolisnykivka, Lozova and Nadiia.

Towards Kharkiv, Ukrainian defence forces have repelled three russian assaults near Vovchansk and Starytsia.

Russia launched two airstrikes near Pysarivka and Staryi Saltiv, dropping four UAVs.

Towards Lyman, there were six firefights, with a total of 16 attacks by the invaders over the day, including near Druzheliubivka and Katerynivka.

Oleh Syniehubov, Head of the RMA, informed that at 4:30pm, russians attacked Oleksandrivka village of Zolochiv community, Bohodukhiv region. They launched two airstrikes from outside the settlement. There was no information on casualties or damage.

The enemy also attacked Shevchenkove village in Chuhuiv region with UAVs. There were no casualties. A residential building was damaged.

Towards Kharkiv, the occupiers launched four attacks near Starytsia in the last 24 hours. Ukrainian Armed Forces units successfully repelled all enemy attacks.

Towards Kupiansk, 18 enemy attacks were registered near Kucherivka, Pishchane, Stepova Novoselivka, Lozova and Vyshneve, nine of them are ongoing.

Overnight, 100 people, including 3 children, were evacuated from Kupiansk and Borova. Settlements on the left bank of the Oskil River are in focus. The situation there is the most critical as it is impossible to repair the damaged infrastructure due to the threat to the lives of construction workers and utility workers. In Kharkiv, there are humanitarian hubs for IDPs, such as Vovchansk and Lyptsi, and soon Kupiansk and Tsyrkuny will open. These are locations where people can come with any question, talk to the administration of their district and get help.

Anton Baiev, Head of the Planning Department of the 13th Brigade of the Khartiia Operational Task Force, reported that during the operation north of Lyptsi, two to three dozen russians were captured. Among the prisoners were fighters of the Wagner PMC who had previously taken part in the fighting towards Bakhmut.

Donetsk oblast

Three residents were injured as police documented the consequences of russian attacks. The russians struck the frontline and residential areas 2,922 times. The attacks took place in 6 settlements: Kurakhove, Pokrovsk, Toretsk, Chasiv Yar, Mykolaivka and Romanivka. 29 civilian objects, including 25 residential buildings, were damaged.

Russians attacked Pokrovsk with a FAB-250 bomb with an UMPC module and artillery, injuring a civilian and damaging 17 private houses and a gas pipeline.

In Chasiv Yar, an artillery shell injured a man and damaged a private house.

The occupiers attacked Mykolaivka with a drone and artillery, resulting in one wounded person, damage to a private house, a social facility and two cars.

2 private houses in Kurakhove and 4 in Romanivka were damaged.

Mariupol City Council reported that the occupiers have opened a part of the road that will connect Rostov-on-Don with Mariupol, calling it “a connection of historical regions of Russia”. Mayor Boichenko explained that the russians are carrying out these works in order to have a land route to Crimea from the occupied territories and not to depend on the Crimean bridge.

Residents of Sviatohirsk community will live without centralised heating this winter, just like in the previous two. Pensioners, people with disabilities and families with children living in private homes are being provided with firewood and briquettes for stove heating. A temporary accommodation centre is also planned to be opened here on 1 November, where those who need it will be able to spend the winter.

Luhansk oblast

Artem Lysohor, Head of Luhansk Regional Military Administration, said that towards Lyman, russians stormed our positions in the areas of Balka Zhuravka and Hrekivka. There was a long battle near this settlement. The invaders are striking at villages, fortifications of Ukrainian defenders and logistics routes. Yesterday, they fired from multiple rocket launchers, cannon artillery and used drones.

This year, more than UAH 2.6m in financial aid has been paid to 692 residents of Sievierodonetsk community. The aid is intended to reimburse expenses incurred during the treatment of a serious illness, injury, medical operations, etc.

Velykyi Liubin Multidisciplinary Training and Rehabilitation Centre is home to three children from Luhansk oblast who suffered from the hostilities and were evacuated from Lysychansk at the beginning of the full-scale invasion.

Despite the doubling of incentive payments for doctors willing to leave russia and work in the so-called “lpr”, the number of applicants has not increased significantly. In the first year of the programme, we managed to recruit 10 people, and recently – eight more. Of course, such figures will not affect the staff shortage that has arisen in the occupied Luhansk region since russia’s arrival there. Yes, some medical workers agree to sign up for a shift and conduct demonstration medical examinations in the “luhansk people’s republic” for a few weeks. However, only those who did not get a job after graduation or have problems with the regime agree to work for five years, as required by the programme. They are not promised anything substantial on the occupied territories either, as these people are expected to work in small medical facilities in Markivka, Perevalsk, Otamanivka and half-ruined Siverskodonetsk.

Residents of the temporarily occupied Rubizhne now call an ambulance from the payphones installed in the town. In total, the occupiers have installed four telephone booths in the town.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

Ruslan Kravchenko, Head of Kyiv Regional Military Administration, reported that the enemy attacked Kyiv oblast with a UAV once again at night. The alert lasted over 8 hours. As a result of the falling debris, a fire broke out in one of the farms. The fire was extinguished, no people were injured.

KCMA reported that since yesterday evening and during the night, air alert was announced in Kyiv 4 times, with a total of three and a half hours of danger. All russian UAVs that were detected in the airspace over the capital and on the outskirts of it were neutralised. As a result of the russian attack, an apartment building was damaged in Desnianskyi district of Kyiv. There were no reports of casualties.

Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klychko informed that a small piece of a UAV was found in the territory of a kindergarten in the Desna district of the capital after an enemy attack. The wreckage also fell on the open territory of the district. No damage or casualties were reported.

On 17 October, Kyiv police received a number of reports of bomb threats in Kyiv, including schools. Children were evacuated. Sappers are checking the institutions.

Kyiv Patrol Police reported receiving reports from citizens about dangerous items in the city. In Desnianskyi district of the capital, a Kyiv resident found an object similar to an explosive, and a resident of Obolonskyi district found a grenade. In both cases, the police quickly arrived at the scene, restricted access to the dangerous items, and called in investigators and explosives experts.

In Vasylkiv, the first rehabilitation module for war victims in Kyiv oblast was set up. This is a modern, technologically advanced, barrier-free space designed to provide free psychosocial and physical rehabilitation services and equipped with all the necessary equipment. The module will be able to serve up to 6,000 patients.

The management of the Okhmatdyt Children’s Hospital has signed a contract to carry out priority emergency repairs to the building that was damaged on 8 July during a russian missile attack. The building will be ‘’preserved‘’ for the winter to prevent further damage.

The Office of the Prosecutor General announced that law enforcement officers gathered evidence and served a suspicion notice in absentia to a russian major general under the article on aggressive warfare. It is the former commander of the 106th Airborne Division of the russian Armed Forces, Vladimir Selivorstov. According to the investigation, at the beginning of the full-scale invasion, he commanded the operation to capture Kyiv.

In Poland, the world premiere of the feature film Bucha will take place at the Warsaw Film Festival. The film, directed by Stanisław Tiunow, will take part in the International Competition section. The film will be screened three times during the festival: 17, 18 and 19 October.

Zhytomyr oblast

The RMA reported that 4,840 objects damaged as a result of russian armed aggression were recorded in Zhytomyr oblast. Currently, the State Register of Property Damaged and Destroyed as a Result of Hostilities, Terrorist Acts, Sabotage Caused by russia’s Armed Aggression against Ukraine contains data on 4,371 buildings and structures. Within the framework of yeVidnovlennia, 143 housing certificates were issued.

The RMA announced that during her visit to Zhytomyr oblast, Estonian Minister of Education and Science Kristina Kallas visited a pre-school in Ovruch. The kindergarten is a modern modular facility built at the expense of the Government of the Republic of Estonia.

17 school buses were purchased for Zhytomyr oblast. The renewal of the school fleet is part of the School Offline policy, which aims to increase access to safe education in a face-to-face format.

Sumy oblast

 In October in Mykolaivka community, the administrative building of a farm enterprise in Bobryk was damaged. The building was completely destroyed by fire, with only the walls remaining. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Sumy Regional Military Administration reported that on the night of 17 October, russian forces shelled Znob-Novhorodske community in Sumy oblast. The first strike caused a fire in apartments within a two-story residential building and also set a car on fire. During the firefighting efforts, the enemy launched a second attack, damaging a fire and rescue vehicle. Luckily, the firefighters managed to take cover in a shelter, and none of them were injured.

During night and morning, russians carried out 9 shelling attacks on border areas and settlements in Sumy oblast, resulting in 24 explosions. The attacks targeted Bilopillia, Richky, Esman, Shalyhyne, Znob-Novhorod communities.

In Korshachyna, Richky community, two explosions, likely caused by Shahed-type drones, destroyed an administrative building, a hangar, and damaged two trucks. Additionally, a medical facility in Richky was damaged as a result of the explosion.

During the day, russians carried out 39 shelling attacks on border areas and settlements in Sumy oblast, resulting in 80 explosions. The attacks targeted Khotin, Yunakivka, Myropilia, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Hlukhiv, Shalyhyne, Esman, Svesa, Seredyna-Buda, Znob-Novhorod communities.

According to the Ministry of Energy, due to airstrikes and artillery shelling from the russian border, 32 consumers in two settlements of Sumy oblast have been left without electricity. In total, 95 settlements, amounting to 6,900 consumers, are currently without power in the oblast.

According to Sumyoblenerho, since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the russian army has damaged 1,468 energy facilities in Sumy oblast.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine reported that Ukrainian police explosives experts in Sumy oblast successfully neutralised a russian Kh-59 aviation missile. The missile, over 7m long and weighing nearly a ton, was discovered in a field near one of the villages. It had not detonated. The explosives experts separated the warhead from the missile, rendered it safe, and destroyed it.

Chernihiv oblast

The russian army attacked three border communities in Chernihiv oblast: Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka, and Snovsk communities, with a total of 21 explosions recorded.

Novhorod-Siverskyi community:

– 1 explosion (hit, probably dropping an explosive device from an unmanned aerial vehicle) near Hremiach.

Semenivka community:

– 3 explosions (hits, probably by barrel artillery) in the area of ​ Karpovychi,

– 3 explosions (hits, probably by barrel artillery) in the area of Mkhy,

– 1 explosion (hit, probably by FPV), in the area of Uhly,.

– 3 explosions (hits, probably by a 120mm mortar) in the vicinity of Yanzhulivka,

– 5 explosions (hits, probably drops of explosive devices from unmanned aerial vehicles) in the area of Mykolaivka,

– 2 explosions (hits, probably by barrel artillery) near Naberezhne.

Snovsk community:

– 1 explosion (hit, probably dropping an explosive device from an unmanned aerial vehicle) in the vicinity of Yeline,

– 2 explosions (hits, probably by rocket artillery) near Stari Borovychi.

No casualties or injuries among the local population were reported as a result of the shelling.

The State Agency for Reconstruction and Infrastructure Development of Ukraine that in Chernihiv, the bridge over Desna River, which was destroyed by russian forces at the start of the full-scale invasion in 2022, has been rebuilt. The reconstruction involved two shifts of bridge workers, each with 1,000 labourers, working around the clock. A massive operation was conducted with the assistance of sappers and divers, including the removal of the ruins of the old bridge, disarming unexploded shells and a bomb, and clearing 400-ton fragments of the old bridge from the riverbed at a depth of 1m.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of the RMA, reported that last evening, the enemy continued to attack Nikopol region. The occupiers shelled Marhanets by Grad. On 16 October, the enemy launched over 30 attacks on Nikopol. 3 people were injured in Marhanets due to artillery attack — 2 women aged 47 and 68 and a 56-year-old man. They were hospitalised in moderate condition. The occupiers targeted Nikopol, Myrove and Marhanets communities by artillery and kamikaze drones. Damage was reported to 3 apartment buildings, infrastructure, an industrial enterprise, 15 private houses, 5 farm buildings, vehicles, gas pipelines and power lines. According to updated information, the night shelling of Chervonohryhorivka community damaged 2 houses, 3 farm buildings and about 10 solar panels.

In Kryvyi Rih, 58 new Invincibility Centres have been prepared in case of possible blackouts.

Vinnytsia oblast

​​According to Vinnytsia City Council, another 150 FPV drones were delivered to the Azov unit. It is known that the fighters of this legendary brigade are stationed in Donetsk oblast, providing a strong defence against the enemy.

Students of Vinnytsia Gymnasium №24 handed over an off-road vehicle, an FPV drone and a radio-electronic warfare system to the military.

Kirovohrad oblast

Elza Leshchenko, Head of the Department of Education and Science of Kirovohrad RMA, during a meeting of the Coordination Centre for Civilian Support, reported that in Kirovohrad oblast, 10,989 displaced children aged 6 to 18 have been registered.

Poltava oblast

A pilot project is being launched in Poltava oblast to provide internally displaced persons with premises that have no legal owners. Nearly all communities are currently searching for abandoned properties.

Cherkasy oblast

Ihor Taburets, Head of Cherkasy RMA, said that in Cherkasy oblast, defenders shot down 2 enemy UAVs.

In Talne, the community welcomed back Oleksandr Bondarenko, a resident who returned home after a long captivity. He was greeted with traditional bread as a symbol of his return to his homeland.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

As reported in the morning briefing of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Ukrainian Defence Forces repelled a russian assault near Mala Tokmachka in Orikhiv axis.

According to Berdiansk Border Guard Unit, the State Border Guard Service’s military neutralised 12 russian strike and reconnaissance drones in Zaporizhzhia oblast.

Ivan Fedorov, Head of the RMA, reported that on 16 October, the russian military launched 424 strikes on 8 towns and villages in Zaporizhzhia oblast.

Mykolaiv oblast

Vitalii Kim, Head of the RMA, informed that on the night of 17 October, russian forces attacked the energy infrastructure in Mykolaiv oblast, causing power outages. Energy workers have restored power to most consumers and the work is ongoing. There were no casualties reported.

Odesa oblast

According to the RMA, on the night of 17 October, air defence was active in Odesa oblast due to the presence of enemy UAVs in Ukrainian airspace.

Based on the information provided by the Air Force, during the day, there was a threat of enemy ballistic weapons from the south in Odesa oblast.

Kherson oblast

As reported by the RMA, russian forces dropped explosives on a 42-year-old man in Dniprovskyi district of Kherson. He suffered blast trauma and injuries to his arm and leg.

The regional prosecutor’s office informed that on 17 October, at around 4:30am, russian forces shelled Kherson by artillery. A 69-year-old woman was injured and is in critical condition.

Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of the RMA, reported that russian forces shelled 20 settlements in Kherson oblast. 6 people were injured, 5 apartment buildings and 10 private houses damaged.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

The Military Unit A4788 received 3 DJI Mavic 3 Pro (RC) quadcopters, 2 DJI Mavic 3T quadcopters, an ECOFLOW DELTA 2 charging station and a Starlink Internet Satellite Dish Kit V2 Roam+Starlink Ethernet Adapter satellite modem from Lutsk community.

The 104th Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine received a Volkswagen Transporter four-wheel drive car from Lutsk community.

Mothers of fallen soldiers from Lutsk underwent a 10-day course of emotional and physical recovery at the Barvinok Health and Recreation Center thanks to the Church of Seventh-day Adventist Christians and Lutsk City Council.

Zakarpattia oblast

The Digitization of the New Economy 2024 international forum has started in the oblast. The event is organised by the government, the Ministry of Digital Transformation and the USAID Agency for International Development.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

The 42th Separate Mechanised Brigades received 70 FPV drones from Ivano-Frankivsk community.

Lviv oblast

The RMA held a meeting with Bill Dodd and Melissa Hurtadom, delegation of the California State Senate. They discussed support and cooperation.

The session of Lviv City Hall extended for 2025-2027 the city program for the repair and arrangement of protective structures of civil defence of Lviv community. As part of this program, 4 large shelters in different areas of the city, which can accommodate 860 people, have already been completely restored.

Rivne oblast

The remote workplace of the Center for the provision of administrative services has become operational in the regional veterans’ hospital. From now on, military personnel undergoing rehabilitation there, as well as doctors, can receive administrative services directly at the facility.

Ternopil oblast

The RMA reported that educational institutions of Ternopil oblast are 100% equipped with shelters. This applies to institutions of general secondary, extracurricular, professional, professional pre-higher and higher education, as well as institutions for adults, specifically institutions of postgraduate education.

The 82nd Battalion of the 105th Territorial Defense Brigade received Ternopil-made anti-aircraft guns and special oil for equipment from Ternopil community.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Since the beginning of 2024, Khmelnytskyi community has sent almost 6,000 FPV drones, over 500 quadcopters and over 160 electronic devices and electronic devices.

Khmelnytskyi City Council allocated over UAH 38m intended for the support of the military and the Defense Forces. Specifically, the City Council gave over UAH 12.5m directly to the military units. They dispose of these funds at their own discretion. The City Council have already given over UAH 315 million directly

172 residents of Khmelnytskyi will receive financial assistance in the amount of over UAH 1,8m. Chernivtsi oblast

Chernivtsi City Council supported the decision to change the limits on the reimbursement of costs for the purchase of generators. From now on, up to 80% of the cost of the generator can be reimbursed from the community budget.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Karin Jean-Pierre, Press Secretary of the White House, reported that the Rammstein meeting of leaders, which was postponed due to the hurricane, will take place next month.

The US announced a new package of military aid to Ukraine worth $425m. The funds are allocated under the PDA program (direct supplies from the reserves of the US Army).The package is aimed at meeting the critical needs of Ukraine. The package includes: additional RMS for NASAMS; surface-to-air missiles RIM-7 and support for the air defence; MANPADS Stinger; ammunition for HIMARS; air-to-ground missiles; 155 mm and 105 mm calibre artillery shells; PTKR TOW; Javelin and AT-4 anti-tank complexes; HMMWV; firearms and ammunition; hand grenades, thermal blankets and training equipment; explosive equipment and ammunition; spare parts, maintenance and support, additional services, logistics and other auxiliary equipment.

Regulations on the training of Ukrainian personnel for the F-16 were approved in Romania.

Canada provided almost $300m in concessional financing to Ukraine.

Ukraine and Greece signed a bilateral security agreement. Greece will provide additional resources to accelerate the training of our F-16 pilots and maintenance personnel.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, held a phone conversation with Joseph Biden, US President. They discussed the possibility of developing joint production of weapons and the importance of additional training for Ukrainian soldiers.

Mark Rutte, NATO Secretary General, stated that Ukraine will be the 33rd or 34th member of NATO one day. Now, according to him, the allies are focused on efforts to build a bridge to Ukraine’s membership.
