It has been the 1544  th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 4 pm:   

On 17 May, the aggressor attacked the positions of the Defense Forces 46 times.

Artillery shelling of border areas continues. In Sumy oblast, the following settlements were affected: Tovstodubove, Rohizne, Sopych, Korenok, Marchykhyna Buda, Sukhodil, Ulanove, Yastrubshchyna, Bezsalivka, Bachivsk, Volfyne, and Kozache; in Chernihiv oblast—Yeline, Yasna Polyana, Mykhalchyna-Sloboda, and Khrinivka. The settlements of Vilna Sloboda and Ulanove in Sumy oblast sustained airstrikes.

Towards Northern Sloboda and Kursk, there were two combat engagements; the enemy carried out two airstrikes using three guided bombs and conducted 35 attacks on settlements and positions of Ukrainian troops.

Towards Southern Sloboda, the enemy stormed the positions of Ukrainian units four times in the vicinity of Vovchanski Khutory and Dvorichanske, Ternova and Kolodiazne.

Towards Kupiansk, the enemy conducted no offensive operations.

Towards Lyman, there were five combat engagements with the adversary in the vicinity of Lyman, Drobysheve, and Zarichne.

Towards Sloviansk, the Defense Forces successfully repelled one attempt by the invaders to advance near Rai-Oleksandrivka.

Towards Kramatorsk, there were no enemy offensive operations.

Towards Kostiantynivka, the invaders carried out 14 attacks near Kostiantynivka, Ivanopillia, Illinivka, Rusyn Yar, Toretske, and Sofiivka, and in the direction of Vilne. Three combat engagements are still ongoing.

Towards Pokrovsk, the occupiers tried 10 times to push Ukrainian warriors from their positions in the vicinity of Rodynske, Novooleksandrivka, Hryshyne, Udachne, and Molodetske. One battle is ongoing.

Towards Oleksandrivka, there were no enemy offensive operations.

Towards Huilaipole, the Defense Forces successfully repelled nine enemy attacks in the vicinity of Zlahoda and Varvarivka, and towards Nove Zaporizhzhia, Zaliznychne, and Charivne. Two more combat engagements are ongoing.

Towards Orikhiv, the enemy conducted one unsuccessful offensive operation in the vicinity of Bilohiria.

Towards Kherson, there were no enemy offensive operations.

In other directions, there are currently no significant changes in the situation. No enemy attempts to advance were recorded.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, there were 234 combat engagements in the oblast, . Towards Southern Sloboda, russian troops stormed positions of the Defense Forces seven times in the vicinity of Vovchansk, Radkivka, Hraniv, Izbytske, and Starytsia. Towards Kupiansk, Ukrainian defenders stopped three attacks by the russian army in the vicinity of Novoosynove, Kurylivka, and Podoly.

Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov reported that on the morning of May 17, the russian army attacked Shevchenkivskyi district of Kharkiv with a drone. Overnight, Osnovianskyi, Kholodnohirskyi, and Saltivskyi districts of the city were also under strike. In the Kholodnohirskyi and Saltivskyi districts, house windows were damaged. According to the city authorities, no people were injured. Seven cars burned to the ground as a result of a russian drone hitting the Saltivskyi district of Kharkiv overnight on May 17. The drone hit the yard of a high-rise building—about ten more cars and house windows sustained damage.

Kharkiv Regional Military Administration reports that Kharkiv and 14 other settlements in the region came under enemy fire. As a result of the shelling, seven people were injured: a 55-year-old woman and men aged 52, 65, and 19 in Kharkiv; a 46-year-old man in Zolochiv; and women aged 61 and 36 suffered an acute stress reaction in Kolisnykivka, Shevchenkove community.

On the evening of May 16, russian aerial bombs hit Pidlyman, Borova community. A 55-year-old and a 65-year-old woman were killed, according to Oleksandr Tertyshnyi, Head of Borova Settlement Military Administration. According to him, 1,090 residents remain in the community, more than half of them on the left bank of the Oskil River. Over the past month, 75 people have evacuated from the community.

Anna Hontar, spokesperson for Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, reported that on the evening of May 16, a 36-year-old and a 61-year-old woman suffered an acute stress reaction as a result of a russian drone strike in Kolisnykivka, Shevchenkove community.

russian troops used UAVs to attack the Industrialnyi, Kyivskyi, Osnovianskyi, Saltivskyi, Kholodnohirskyi, Nemyshlianskyi, and Shevchenkivskyi districts of Kharkiv. Throughout the day, the russian army deployed one KAB, nine Geran-2 UAVs, one Lancet UAV, seven Molniya UAVs, five FPV drones, and 40 unidentified drones across Kharkiv oblast, according to Kharkiv Regional Military Administration.

In Kharkiv, two apartment buildings, two private houses, the glazing of a higher education institution, two garages, and 10 cars were damaged. In Bohodukhiv, Izium, Kharkiv, and Chuhuiv districts, residential buildings, outbuildings, an administrative building, a residential care facility, a cafe, a sanatorium, an outpatient clinic, and cars were damaged.

Kharkiv Regional Military Administration reports that the transit evacuation point in Lozova received 240 people over the past day. Since the point began operating, 34,603 people have been registered there.

Donetsk oblast

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Defense Forces repelled 12 assaults towards Kostiantynivka over the past day near Kostiantynivka, Ivanopillia, Illinivka, and Stepanivka. The Ukrainian military stopped 32 assaults towards Pokrovsk, and nine more towards Lyman.

Serhii Luhovyk, a representative of the 54th Separate Mechanized Brigade, stated that russian troops intensified their assaults at the end of the week and increased pressure with drones and aviation towards Sloviansk. According to him, the main targets of the russian army remain the logistics of the Defense Forces, transport, warehouses, supply routes, and critical infrastructure of Sloviansk and Kramatorsk.

The 7th Air Assault Corps reported that the Ukrainian Defense Forces struck a rear hub of russian troops near Selydove, 20 km from Pokrovsk. A logistics warehouse and an antenna system on a spoil tip, which the occupiers used to control Molniya strike drones and maintain communication in the sector, were hit. The strike was carried out using HIMARS and strike UAVs.

After midnight, the russian army shelled Sloviansk and Kramatorsk. An apartment building was damaged in Kramatorsk, and a private house was damaged in Sloviansk.

Vadym Liakh, Head of Slaviansk City Military Administration, reported that overnight into May 17, russian troops attacked Slaviansk twice with Italmas UAVs. A private house and a motorcycle center were damaged; there were no casualties. Due to the shelling, part of the city and the settlements of the community were left without electricity, and there is no water supply in the Lisnyi and Zaliznychnyi neighborhoods and the settlement of Myrnyi.

Donetsk Region Police reported that throughout May 16, law enforcement officers recorded 1,279 strikes by the russian army on the frontline and residential sector of Donetsk region. Five settlements were under fire: Dobropillia, Kramatorsk, Mykolaivka, Slaviansk, and Malotaranivka. 13 civilian objects sustained damage.

In Malotaranivka, a civilian was killed during drone attacks, and a car was damaged.

As a result of russian strikes, three shops and three civilian cars were destroyed in Kramatorsk, and a shop was destroyed in Sloviansk.

It was also established that an apartment building and three private houses were damaged in Druzhkivka on May 15.

Luhansk oblast

Oleksii Kharchenko, Head of Luhansk Regional Military Administration, reported that towards Lyman, russian troops tried to advance nine times in the vicinity of seven settlements over the past day. In Luhansk oblast, 11 drones carried out combat missions for the occupiers, and the enemy also used tube artillery and automatic grenade launchers.

In the so-called “lpr,” prosecutorial control over conscription and mobilization procedures has been tightened. The prosecutor’s office of the russian federation will check the records of those liable for military service at military enlistment offices, enterprises, and educational institutions. Special attention will be paid to youth, who are effectively placed under control starting from high school.

The occupation authorities are trying to address the staff shortage in the medical field of Sievierodonetsk through a scheme of training young people in russian medical universities, followed by mandatory employment in local hospitals. Specifically, this involves studying in Perm and returning to occupied Luhansk oblast upon graduation.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

Mykola Kalashnyk, Head of Kyiv Regional Military Administration, reported at 16:45 on 17 May that in the Brovary district of Kyiv oblast, a transport company building and two private homes were damaged as a result of an attack by enemy drones. There were no civilian casualties. All necessary services are working at the sites.

On 16 May, Kyiv paid its respects to 24-year-old Maryna Homeniuk, who was killed in a combined russian attack on Kyiv on the night of 14 May. The young woman and her boyfriend were found under the rubble of a destroyed high-rise building in the Darnytskyi district, where a russian ballistic missile struck, killing 24 people.

On 16 May, the village of Maidanivka in Kyiv oblast welcomed Volodymyr Barabasy, who had been released from captivity. The soldier served in the 79th Separate Airborne Assault Tavriya Brigade and was taken prisoner on 4 July 2022. Volodymyr was exchanged on the eve of Easter, 11 April 2026. He returned to his home village for the first time since his captivity.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, the annual Communication Forum of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine 4.0 took place in Kyiv, bringing together around 200 specialists from communication departments across all regions of the country. The event served as a platform to exchange experiences and discuss strategic and crisis communications as a component of national resilience, anti-disinformation efforts, and the development of modern approaches to working in the information space amid a full-scale war.

Valery Zaluzhny announced that an English-language edition of the book ‘Hunting for the Cruiser “Moskva”’ was recently presented in Kyiv. This is a thorough and highly engaging study by Oleksandr Chudnovets and Andrii Bulavin on the history of the former flagship of the russian Black Sea Fleet, which was sunk by the Ukrainian Defence Forces four years ago.

Zhytomyr oblast

According to the director of the educational institution, Viacheslav Maksymchuk, in the village of Holovine, in Cherniakhiv community, a dormitory is being set up for internally displaced persons. Renovation work is currently underway on the first and second floors of the former student dormitory of the Polissya Industrial Vocational College. The work is scheduled to be completed by August 2026. 

During the full-scale war, 26 practical psychologists from Zhytomyr oblast have undergone training as part of the ‘Support for Psychologists’ project. The 17th group graduated on 10 May. The project began in 2022 to update and refresh the knowledge of psychologists working in schools and volunteer centres in the context of the war.

Sumy oblast

Sumy Regional Military Administration reported that two civilians were killed in Putyvl community on the morning of 17 May as a result of the detonation of an explosive object. The men found parts of a UAV and loaded them into a car. One of the explosive elements detonated. Men aged 45 and 47 were killed in the blast.

In Romen region, a 12-year-old boy sustained injuries caused by an unknown object that exploded. According to police, the boy found an explosive object and brought it home. Later, the object exploded when the child was nearby. The boy was hospitalised.

On the evening of 16 May, russian army struck Sumy. Serhii Kryvosheienko, Head of City Military Administration, said that a russian UAV, preliminarily a Molniia, hit a yard area in Zarichnyi district. Cars, a non-residential building and a shopping centre were damaged in the russian strike.

Throughout 16 May, russian troops attacked Vorozhba community by FPV drones and attack UAVs. The City Council informed that private residential houses were damaged and cars were destroyed as a result of the strikes.

According to State Emergency Service, on the morning of 16 May, UAV strikes on Hlukhiv community caused a house and two utility buildings to catch fire. Residential houses were damaged.

As of the morning of 17 May, three people were injured as a result of enemy strikes in Sumy oblast over the past day. In Sumy community, a 46-year-old woman was wounded in an enemy UAV attack. In Buryn community, a 55-year-old man and a 62-year-old woman were injured as a result of enemy drone strikes.

Over the day, from the morning of 16 May to the morning of 17 May 2026, russian troops carried out almost 80 attacks on 30 settlements in 21 territorial communities of oblast. The enemy used mortars, artillery, FPV drones, UAVs and guided aerial bombs. Over the day, air-raid alerts in oblast lasted 21 hours and 28 minutes.

Civilian infrastructure facilities were damaged and destroyed:

  • In Sumy community, apartment blocks, private residential houses, non-residential premises, administrative premises, premises of a shopping centre, passenger cars and civilian infrastructure facilities were damaged.
  • In Vorozhba community, private residential houses, outbuildings and private passenger cars were damaged.
  • In Berezivka community, outbuildings were damaged.
  • In Kyrykivka community, a private residential house was damaged.
  • In Bilopillia community, a private residential house was damaged.
  • In Hlukhiv community, a private residential house was destroyed, and private residential houses, civilian infrastructure facilities and a passenger car were damaged.
  • In Yampil community, private residential houses were damaged.
  • In Mykolaivka rural community, a passenger car was damaged.
  • In Sad community, a civilian infrastructure facility was damaged.
  • In Buryn community, private residential houses, civilian passenger cars and a civilian infrastructure facility were damaged.
  • In Shostka community, residential houses and outbuildings were destroyed.

Chernihiv oblast

State Emergency Service in Chernihiv oblast reported that russian troops attacked one of the enterprises in Koriukivka region by an attack UAV on 17 May. A fire broke out as a result of the hit and was promptly extinguished. A woman was injured.

Oleksandr Seliverstov, Head of Novhorod-Siverskyi Regional Military Administration, said that on the night of 17 May, russian troops attacked Novhorod-Siverskyi by an attack UAV. Civilian infrastructure was damaged as a result of the strike.

Chernihiv Border Guard Detachment informed that during 16 May, russian troops attacked four border communities of Chernihiv oblast: Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka, Horodnia and Snovsk. The enemy carried out attacks by mortars (four explosions), tube artillery (two explosions), Herbera-type UAVs (four explosions), a Shahed UAV (one explosion), FPV drones (eight explosions), and dropped explosive devices from UAVs (four explosions). Eight settlements came under enemy fire.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Council, reported that three people were injured in Dnipro as a result of a UAV attack. A private house caught fire, homes were damaged, and damage was recorded on the premises of an enterprise.

Pokrovske community was hit by an FPV drone and a UAV. A man was injured. A garage caught fire.

In Petropavlivka community, an agricultural enterprise was damaged as a result of a UAV attack.

The occupiers attacked Nikopol region by UAVs and shelled it by artillery. They targeted Nikopol, Chervonohryhorivka, Marhanets and Pokrovske rural communities. Two apartment blocks, two private houses, a petrol station, enterprises and infrastructure were damaged.

The enemy attacked Kryvyi Rih, Zelenodolka and Lozuvatske communities by UAVs. Four people were injured. A fire broke out, and a house and infrastructure were damaged.

In Pokrovske community, two people were killed by artillery shelling. They were pulled from under the rubble of a house.

In Marhanets, four people — two women and two men — were injured as a result of an FPV attack. The enemy struck by drones and artillery, targeting Nikopol, Myrove, Chervonohryhorivka, Marhanets and Pokrovske rural communities.

A fire broke out. A country house was destroyed, another was damaged, and an unused building, an apartment block, a private house, three cars, an ambulance and infrastructure were also damaged.

The occupiers struck Kryvyi Rih and Zelenodolska community by UAVs. Infrastructure and an enterprise were damaged.

Vasylkivka community was hit by a UAV, damaging a house.

Mezhove community was struck by an FPV drone. A house was also damaged. A 41-year-old man was injured.

Cars caught fire in Krynychky community as a result of a UAV attack.

Kirovohrad oblast

A rally in support of missing servicemen and those held in russian captivity was held in Pomichna, Novoukrainka region, Kirovohrad oblast.

Poltava oblast

Poltava Regional Military Administration informed that in the morning, the enemy attacked one of the enterprises in Myrhorodskyi region. Technological equipment was damaged.

Cherkasy oblast

Ihor Taburets, Head of Cherkasy Regional Military Administration, saids that defenders shot down seven russian UAVs in Cherkasy oblast.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Ivan Fedorov, Head of the Regional Military Administration, reported that russian troops attacked a gas station in Zaporizhzhia region with a drone. A fire broke out at the site. Preliminarily, there were no casualties. A 25-year-old woman was injured.

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Defense Forces repelled 24 attacks by the russian army towards Huilaipole over the past day, May 16. Specifically, there were combat engagements in the vicinity of Dobropillia, Verkhnia Tersa, Zlahoda, Hirke, Krynyčne, Staroukrainka, Huilaipilske, Zaliznychne, and Charivne.

Ivan Fedorov, Head of the Regional Military Administration, reported that seven people were injured as a result of attacks on the regional center, Zaporizhzhia and Polohy districts. Over the past day, May 16, the russian military launched 960 strikes on 49 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast. The occupiers mostly attacked with drones (primarily FPV drones).

Mykolaiv oblast

The Regional Military Administration reported that throughout May 16 and overnight into May 17, the russian army attacked Mykolaiv oblast with Shaheds and FPV drones. The russian army attacked the Kutsurub and Halytsynove communities five times with FPV drones. As a result of the attack in the Halytsynove community, two men aged 51 and 82 were injured. The 51-year-old victim was hospitalized, and as of the morning, his condition is of moderate severity, with no deterioration. The 82-year-old man is receiving outpatient treatment. Due to falling Shahed debris in the Kutsurub community, a building of a defunct educational institution was damaged.

Odesa oblast

The Air Force reported that today, UAVs were detected from the Black Sea heading towards Odesa, Chornomorsk, and Vylkove.

Kherson oblast

The Regional Military Administration reported that at approximately 14:50, russian occupiers attacked an elderly woman with a drone in the Dniprovskyi district of Kherson. The 79-year-old resident was taken to the hospital with a blast injury and an open fracture of a leg bone.

The Regional Military Administration reported that at approximately 13:00, the russians struck Zelenivka with a UAV. A 43-year-old man was injured due to the enemy drone attack. He was diagnosed with a mine-blast injury, a closed craniocerebral injury, a concussion, as well as shrapnel wounds to his lower limbs and chest.

The Regional Military Administration reported that at around 10:30, the russians attacked the Korabelnyi district of Kherson with a drone. A 70-year-old man was injured due to the UAV strike. He sustained a blast injury, a closed craniocerebral injury, as well as shrapnel wounds to his head and limbs.

The Regional Military Administration reported that at approximately 09:30, the russians attacked a bus near Naddniprianske with a drone. A 69-year-old man was injured due to the enemy strike. He sustained a blast injury and shrapnel wounds to his leg.

The Regional Military Administration reported that at approximately 08:00, the russians attacked the Korabelnyi district of Kherson with a drone. A 63-year-old man came under the strike. He sustained a blast injury and shrapnel wounds to his head and torso.

The Regional Military Administration reported that a 22-year-old girl, who came under russian shelling in downtown Kherson yesterday, died in the hospital.

The Regional Military Administration reported that yesterday at around 23:00, a man was injured due to a russian drone attack in the Korabelnyi district of Kherson. The 56-year-old resident was taken to the hospital with shrapnel wounds to his leg, a concussion, a blast injury, and a closed craniocerebral injury.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

A rally was held in Lutsk in support of prisoners from Mariupol. Currently, almost 680 fighters of the Azov brigade, who came from Azovstal, are in captivity.

Zakarpattia oblast

Ma Shenkun, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to Ukraine, visited the oblast. This is the diplomat’s 2nd visit to the oblast. They discussed cooperation.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Ivano-Frankivsk City Council announced that a memorial plaque to fallen hero Serhii Hanchak was unveiled in the city.

Lviv oblast

A charity auction was held in Lviv, organized by Be Strong and Birds of Victory with the support of Sokilnytsia community and socially responsible businesses. The raised UAH 3.5m will be used to purchase drones of various configurations and the rehabilitation of soldiers.

Rivne oblast

Rivne oblast has received the 7th evacuation train this year. 17 people arrived from Donetsk oblast. They were placed in the Hoshchanska, Zdolbunivska and Koretska communities of Rivne region.

Ternopil oblast

The 105th Separate Territorial Defense Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine received 100 drones from Ternopil community. These are FPV drones with a 13-inch frame – powerful unmanned platforms with a large carrying capacity and a significant flight range.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Khmelnytskyi’s sister city, Siauliai, with the assistance of the Red Cross Society, has provided the community with important humanitarian aid: 51 generators (18 11 kW generators and 33 15 kW generators). All of them will be used to strengthen the energy resilience of infrastructure facilities in the event of further attacks on the power system.

Chernivtsi oblast

Chernivtsi community paid its last respects to Serhii Suha, soldier of the Military Unit A7220. The soldier was killed while performing a combat mission in Donetsk oblast.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Medics from Canada, the US and Ukraine continue to work together as part of the Face the Future international reconstructive mission, which helps servicemen with severe facial, head and neck injuries. The 7th mission of surgeons took place, during which they performed surgical interventions on 24 patients.
