It has been the 1543  th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 4 pm:  

In total, 195 combat engagements took place since the beginning of this day.

The Defense Forces continue to stop the enemy, destroy the personnel and exhaust the combat potential of the occupiers, inflicting systematic fire damage.

The adversary launched 51 airstrikes, dropping 182 guided aerial bombs. In addition, it deployed 5,768 kamikaze drones and carried out 2,226 attacks on settlements and positions of Ukrainian troops.

Towards Northern Sloboda and Kursk, 16 combat engagements took place; the enemy carried out five airstrikes using 10 guided bombs, and launched 80 attacks on settlements and positions of Ukrainian troops, four of which involved multiple launch rocket systems.

Towards Southern Sloboda, the enemy stormed positions of Ukrainian units five times in the vicinity of Vovchansk, Radkivka, Hraniv, Izbytske, and Starytsia. One combat engagement is ongoing.

Towards Kupiansk, Ukrainian protectors stopped two enemy assaults in the vicinity of Novoosynove and Podoly.

Towards Lyman, Ukrainian warriors repelled seven attempts by the invaders to advance in the vicinity of Stepove, Novyi Myr, Stavky, Drobysheve, Yampil, and Ozerne.

Towards Sloviansk, the Defense Forces successfully repelled three attempts by the invaders to advance in the vicinity of Zakitne and Rai-Oleksandrivka.

Towards Kramatorsk, Ukrainian defenders stopped one enemy attack in the vicinity of Nykyforivka.

The Defense Forces successfully repelled 11 enemy assaults towards Kostiantynivka near Kostiantynivka, Ivanopillia, Illinivka, and Stepanivka.

Towards Pokrovsk, the enemy carried out 23 attacks. The occupiers tried to advance in the vicinity of Vilne, Kucheriv Yar, Zolotoi Kolodiaz, Nove Shakhove, Bilytske, Hryshyne, Vasylivka, Novomykolaivka, Rodynske, Novooleksandrivka, Boikivka, Serhiivka, and Molodetske.

According to preliminary estimates, 46 occupiers were killed and 14 wounded in this direction today; 11 vehicles, eight pieces of special equipment, one electronic warfare station, and one infantry shelter were destroyed; three vehicles, three artillery pieces, and five drone control points were damaged. 250 unmanned aerial vehicles of various types were destroyed or suppressed.

Towards Oleksandrivka and Orikhiv, the enemy conducted no offensive operations today.

Towards Huilaipole, 17 attacks by the occupiers took place in the vicinity of Dobropillia, Verkhnia Tersa, Zlahoda, Hirke, Krynyчне, Staroukrainka, Huilaipilske, and Charivne.

Towards Kherson, Ukrainian defenders successfully stopped two assault operations in the direction of Antonivka.

 

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

Over the past day, 263 combat engagements were recorded at the front, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Towards Southern Sloboda, russian troops attacked positions of the Defense Forces 10 times towards Izbytske, Ternova, and Novovasylivka, and in the vicinity of Starytsia, Lyman, Synelnykove, and Vovchanski Khutory. Towards Kupiansk, the russian army attacked twice towards Kindrashivka and Radkivka.

In Kyivskyi district of Kharkiv, three men were injured as a result of a russian drone strike. The roof of a garage was also damaged, according to Kharkiv Regional Military Administration.

Kharkiv Regional Military Administration reports that over the past day, Kharkiv and 16 other settlements in the region came under enemy fire. As a result of the shelling, two people were injured: a 33-year-old woman in Kharkiv and a 46-year-old man in Kotliary, Bezliudivka community.

russian troops used UAVs to attack the Novobavarskyi, Kholodnohirskyi, Osnovianskyi, Shevchenkivskyi, and Kyivskyi districts of Kharkiv. Throughout the day, the russian army deployed two KABs, 13 Geran-2 UAVs, four Molniya UAVs, 11 FPV drones, and 24 unidentified drones across Kharkiv oblast.

In Kharkiv, a civilian enterprise, railway infrastructure, an apartment building, a public transport stop, a shop, a subway exit, and power grids were damaged. In Bohodukhiv, Kupiansk, Izium, Kharkiv, Lozova, and Chuhuiv districts, residential buildings, outbuildings, an outpatient clinic, administrative buildings, warehouses, agricultural and civilian enterprises, a hangar, a tractor, and power grids were damaged.

Kharkiv Regional Military Administration reports that the transit evacuation point in Lozova received 232 people over the past day. Since the point began operating, 34,363 people have been registered there.

Donetsk oblast

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Defense Forces repelled 35 assaults towards Pokrovsk over the past day. The Ukrainian military stopped attacks in the vicinity of Zatyshok, Novooleksandrivka, Rodynske, Bilytske, Hryshyne, Serhiivka, Kotlyne, Udachne, Novomykolaivka, Novopavlivka, Filiia, Hannivka, and Molodetske.

The russian army attacked 23 times towards Kostiantynivka, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that Ukrainian troops struck a russian command post in the vicinity of Pokrovsk, a UAV command post in Hrafske, a hangar with military equipment in Selydove, a logistics warehouse in Baranykivka in Luhansk oblast, as well as russian troop concentrations in Shakhtarsk, Mykhailivka, Yalta, and Selydove.

Drones of the Spartan brigade are operating over occupied Donetsk. Black Sky operators are destroying the logistics of russian troops while showing the city to Ukrainians who are waiting to return home.

Petro Andriushchenko, Head of the Center for the Study of Occupation, reported that the russian military has begun disguising trucks as civilian transport by painting company names on them. Specifically, video footage captured a semi-truck with the inscription “Delovye Linii” (Business Lines), which looks like commercial transport from the outside but is actually used by the russian army.

According to the strategic communications department of the 1st Regiment of the National Guard of Ukraine “Azov,” about 1,400 servicemen of the “Azov” brigade entered russian captivity after leaving Azovstal in 2022. Fewer than 600 defenders have been successfully returned during exchanges, over 200 Azov fighters have been convicted on fabricated charges, and more than 700 remain in captivity. May 16–20 marks the fourth anniversary of the garrison that held Azovstal entering captivity.

Anastasiia Medvedieva, spokesperson for the Donetsk Regional Prosecutor’s Office, reported that on May 16, russian troops shelled Malotaranivka, Kramatorsk community. A 70-year-old woman was killed as a result of the attack.

Donetsk Region Police reported that overnight on May 16, from 02:10 to 03:30, the russian army attacked Kramatorsk. A private house and a civilian car were damaged.

Donetsk Region Police reported that throughout May 15, law enforcement officers recorded 1,154 strikes by the russian army on the frontline and residential sector of Donetsk region. Six settlements were under fire: Druzhkivka, Kramatorsk, Mykolaivka, Slaviansk, Oleksiievo-Druzhkivka, and Dolyna. 12 civilian objects were destroyed, including five residential buildings.

In Mykolaivka, one person was killed and five apartment buildings and an educational institution were damaged as a result of russian shelling.

The russian army attacked Druzhkivka with FPV drones, injuring three civilians.

One person was injured in Oleksiievo-Druzhkivka.

In Slaviansk, five civilian cars were damaged during a drone attack.

Luhansk oblast

Oleksii Kharchenko, Head of Luhansk Regional Military Administration, reported that towards Lyman, russian troops launched 13 assaults in the vicinity of eight settlements over the past day. In Luhansk oblast, the occupiers struck with tube artillery and automatic grenade launchers, and deployed 11 drones.

Oleksii Kharchenko, Head of Luhansk Regional Military Administration, reported that the occupation authorities failed to integrate the medical facilities providing assistance in Rubizhne, Lysychansk, and Sievierodonetsk into the russian state services portal. Because of this, residents cannot check the list of medical services, doctor schedules, or make appointments online; paper appointments can only be obtained in person.

Oleksii Kharchenko, Head of Luhansk Regional Military Administration, reported that the occupiers are demanding that residents of the so-called “lpr” replace disability confirmation documents whose validity expired or is expiring between February 24, 2022, and the end of 2026, by December 31, 2026. This applies not only to Ukrainian-style documents but also to papers issued in the territory occupied since 2014. Those who fail to re-register their documents in time may be stripped of payments, while the occupational medical and social commissions cannot keep up with all applicants, creating large queues at medical facilities.

Maksym Bilousov, Head of the Communications Section of the 60th Separate Mechanized Brigade, stated that the forests of Lyman area are disappearing due to the war: fires and shelling are turning once-dense plantations into open terrain. According to him, this also affects combat tactics, as the russian army presses with small groups and deploys drones en masse.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

Over the past 24 hours, air raid alerts have been issued several times in Kyiv oblast; defence forces were deployed. Enemy targets have been hit. The effects of the attack have been recorded in the Vyshhorod district. A private house and the premises of a municipal enterprise have been damaged. Seven vehicles – lorries, a tractor and cars – have been damaged by debris and the blast wave. All necessary emergency services immediately began working at the scene.

Zhytomyr oblast

A farewell ceremony was held in Zhytomyr for 48-year-old soldier Serhiy Khvorostyanytskyi, who was killed on 12 March 2024 whilst carrying out a combat mission in Kharkiv oblast.

Serhiy Ivanov, a 37-year-old soldier from Irshansk, was returned to Ukraine from russian captivity. Serhiy served in the 1st Ivan Bohun Special Forces Brigade. He had been held captive since December 2022.

During the prisoner exchange, 29-year-old soldier Andriy Khmilovskyi was returned to Ukraine from russian captivity. The soldier, a native of the village of Krasnohirka in the Chudniv community, served in the 36th Separate Marine Brigade.

Sumy oblast

Seven people were injured in Putyvlska community — men aged 33, 41, 44, 44, 52, 53 and 60.

There were 75 attacks on 35 settlements in 16 communities of oblast.

Damage was recorded in:

  • Vorozhba community: private residential houses, an outbuilding, cars and an infrastructure facility were damaged.
  • Putyvl community: infrastructure facilities, non-residential buildings and a private residential house were damaged.
  • Shostka community: private residential houses, outbuildings and an infrastructure facility were damaged.
  • Nova Slobidka, Velyka Pysarivska, Trostianets and Hlukhivka communities: private residential houses were damaged.
  • Esman community: a private residential house and outbuildings were destroyed.
  • Seredyna-Buda community: a private household was damaged.
  • Buryn community: a car was damaged.
  • Znob-Novhorodske community: a non-residential building and an infrastructure facility were damaged.
  • Mykolaivka rural community: a healthcare facility, a kindergarten and a community centre were damaged.

Twelve people were evacuated.

Air-raid alerts lasted 19 hours and 44 minutes.

Chernihiv oblast

At night, russian troops attacked Novhorod-Siverskyi community. In Lyzunivka village, a woman born in 1963 was injured and three private houses belonging to local residents were damaged.

In Semenivka, russia attacked civilian infrastructure by four Herbera-type UAVs. There were no casualties among the local population. A grocery store was damaged by an FPV drone strike.

russian troops attacked Lyzunivka at 2:15am by attack UAVs. The scale of destruction and final consequences of this strike are currently being established.

Border villages of Koriukivka community were attacked by russian FPV drones. As a result of the strikes, a house caught fire; local residents extinguished the blaze. Another house was damaged, and the roof of a village club was also damaged. In another village, hits were recorded on a car and a quad bike. In one more village, a house and a passenger car were damaged.

In Mena community, a hit was recorded on a transport infrastructure facility.

In total, 46 russian strikes were recorded in Chernihiv oblast during 15 May.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Council, reported that a 22-year-old man was injured in Marhanets as a result of an FPV strike. It was another attack on a car. The enemy struck the region by drones and artillery, targeting Nikopol, Chervonohryhorivka, Myrove, Marhanets and Pokrovske rural communities. Seventeen cars and mopeds burned. An outbuilding was damaged.

Infrastructure was damaged in Kryvyi Rih as a result of UAV attacks. A private house was damaged in Sofiivka community.

In Synelnykove, 13 cars burned as a result of a UAV attack.

In Pokrovske community, a 38-year-old man was killed. A total of nine people were injured, including two children: a 10-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy. Throughout the day, the enemy struck by drones and artillery. russians targeted Nikopol, Chervonohryhorivka, Myrove, Marhanets and Pokrovske rural communities.

Petrol stations, two apartment blocks, 13 private houses, a shop, a kindergarten, six outbuildings, two administrative buildings, a car, infrastructure, a gas pipeline and power lines were damaged. The occupiers struck Kryvyi Rih and Zelenodolska community. Infrastructure, an enterprise and a private house were damaged.

Vinnytsia oblast

Veterans’ motorcycle club SBESH MMC UKRAINE officially opened 2026 motorcycle season in Vinnytsia on 16 May. The ride was dedicated to honouring the memory of fallen defenders and was held in support of Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Kirovohrad oblast

During a prisoner exchange, marine Armen Ohanesian from Kropyvnytskyi region, Kirovohrad oblast, returned to Ukraine. The sailor of 36th Separate Marine Brigade was taken into captivity in Mariupol in spring 2022.

Poltava oblast

Poltava Regional Military Administration reported that enemy UAV crashes were recorded in Poltavskyi and Myrhorodskyi regions. Private residential houses were damaged. A person who was injured as a result of the enemy attack on 5 May died in hospital. The death toll has risen to five.

Cherkasy oblast

Ihor Taburets, Head of Cherkasy Regional Military Administration, said that defenders shot down 15 russian UAVs in Cherkasy oblast.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Ivan Fedorov, Head of Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, reported that men aged 36 and 45 were injured as a result of a russian attack on Zaporizhzhia oblast. The russian troops struck Nyzhnia Khortytsia by a drone. The injured received medical assistance.

Today, russian troops attacked Zaporizhzhia. 2 people were injured.

According to State Emergency Service of the oblast, on 15 May, 6 fires caused by russian shelling occurred in Zaporizhzhia and its suburbs. In particular, a residential building and an apartment in a 5-story building caught fire.

Based on the information provided by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, on 15 May, Ukrainian Defence Forces repelled 33 russian attacks on Huliaipole region. Combat clashes took place near Pryluky, Charivne, Huliaipilske, Rybne and towards Dobropillia, Zlahoda, Novozaporizhzhia, Pryvillia, Zaliznychne, Tsvitkove, Vozdvyzhivka, Staroukrainka and Krynychne.

Ivan Fedorov, Head of the RMA, stated that on 15 May, 1 person was killed and 21 injured as a result of russian attacks . The russian troops carried out 850 strikes on 53 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast.

Mykolaiv oblast

Referring to Mykolaiv RMA, on the night of 16 May, the russian military attacked Mykolaiv oblast by Shahed drones. As a result of the attack in Ochakiv, an administrative building, windows in 2 apartment buildings and a private house were damaged. There were no injuries reported. A fire broke out in the administrative building.

15 May, russian troops attacked Snihurivka community twice, preliminarily by drones.

Odesa oblast

As a result of the russian nighttime attack on Odesa oblast on 16 May, residential buildings, port infrastructure, a gymnasium and a store were damaged. 2 men aged 59 and 74 were injured.

Relying on the information provided by Izmail Regional State Administration, on the night of 16 May, russia attacked Izmail region of Odesa oblast. Critical infrastructure facilities and residential buildings in Izmail came under attack. There were casualties reported. Due to damage to overhead power lines, 39 settlements in Izmail region were left without electricity.

Kherson oblast

According to Kherson RMA, at approximately 5:15pm in Tsentralnyi district of Kherson, a girl was injured as a result of a russian drone attack. Preliminary reports indicate that the 22-year-old Kherson resident sustained a mine-blast injury.

As a result of a russian attack in Darivka, a 69-year-old woman was injured and sustained blast trauma and shrapnel wounds to the face.

At noon, a man was killed as a result of russian shelling in central part of Kherson. A 35-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman were injured and are currently hospitalised.

2 residents of Komyshany sought medical assistance after being injured during russian shelling the previous evening. A 72-year-old woman and a 50-year-old man were diagnosed with blast injuries, concussion and acute stress reaction.

At around 9:20am in Tsentral district of Kherson, a child was injured as a result of a russian drone attack. At the moment of the enemy strike, the 15-year-old boy was inside a building. He sustained concussion, blast injuries and a closed traumatic brain injury.

At 9am in Korabelnyi district, the enemy attacked men aged 61 and 62 by a drone while they were walking down the street. They sustained blast injuries and shrapnel wounds to their limbs.

At around 8:40am, Tsentralnyi district again came under a drone attack. The enemy attacked a 67-year-old woman. She sustained blast injuries, concussion and acute stress reaction. The victim will undergo outpatient treatment.

At 8:20am in Korabelnyi district, a 56-year-old man came under attack from an enemy drone.

At approximately 7am, a russian drone attacked a civilian vehicle in Tsentralnyi district. A 60-year-old driver was hospitalised with shrapnel wounds to the legs, concussion, blast injuries and a closed traumatic brain injury.

At around 4am, russians shelled an apartment building in the city centre, causing a 60-year-old man and woman to sustain concussions, blast injuries and closed traumatic brain injuries.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

From April to 15 May, 23 people in Volyn oblast received grants under the Own Business program. Among the program participants are veterans, people with disabilities as a result of war, and their family members. Within the framework of the program, participants can receive from UAH 100,000 to 500,000. The total amount for a month and a half was UAH 11.8m.

Zakarpattia oblast

Matsanyn Mykhailo and Poliak Stepan, from the oblast, were released from enemy captivity. One of them served in the ranks of the Ukrainian Marine Corps, the other in the National Guard.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

The RMA reported that among those released from captivity is Bohdan Seniuk, serviceman from Ivano-Frankivsk oblast.

Lviv oblast

Among the 205 Ukrainian soldiers who were released from russian captivity today is Andrii Hursky, Major, Chief of Staff – First Deputy Commander of the Self-Propelled Artillery Division of the Brigade Artillery Group of the 36th Separate Marine Brigade from Truskavets. He held the defense of the Azovstal in Mariupol. He was captured in April 2022.

Rivne oblast

Among the Ukrainian soldiers released from captivity today is a 29-year-old marine soldier from Rivne region.

Ternopil oblast

Fighters of the unmanned systems battalion of the 110th Separate Mechanized Brigade named after General-Coroner Mark Bezruchko received an electronic warfare complex from Ternopil community.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

During a daytime air alert signal, the Air Defense Forces shot down/suppressed 1 enemy drone. There were no damages, deaths or injuries.

Chernivtsi oblast

Chernivtsi City Council held a meeting with Heads of structural units and municipal enterprises. They discussed the readiness of life support and social sphere facilities for work in the autumn-winter period. The available resources and capabilities of the community were analyzed, and possible crisis situations that the city may face during the cold weather were simulated.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

The Foreign Ministry reported that 36 countries and the EU have approved an agreement to establish a steering committee for the Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression of the russian federation against Ukraine.
