The aggressor continues to attempt to advance deeper into Ukrainian territory. In certain sections of the front line, the occupiers are carrying out assault operations. Defence forces are holding the enemy back, inflicting significant losses on them and thwarting their attempts to improve their position.
Since the start of the day, the aggressor has launched 217 attacks.
Shelling of border areas continues. Today, the following settlements in Sumy oblast were hit: Trudove, Korenok, Iskryskivshchyna, Atynske, Ryzhivka, Khodyne, Budky, Sopych, and Shalyhine. The enemy also shelled Zarichchia in Chernihiv oblast.
Towards Northern Sloboda and Kursk, three clashes have taken place since the start of the day; the enemy has carried out 66 attacks on settlements and our troops’ positions, 10 of which involved the use of multiple launch rocket systems.
Towards Southern Sloboda, the enemy launched nine attacks in the areas of Vovchansk and Pishchane and in the direction of Okhrymivka and Bochkove. Three clashes are ongoing.
Towards Kupiansk, the enemy launched 11 attacks in the areas of Petropavlivka, Kurylivka, Hlushevka and Novoplatonivka. Two clashes are ongoing.
Towards Lyman, Ukrainian troops repelled four attempts by the invaders to advance towards Lyman and Drobysheve. One engagement is still ongoing.
Towards Sloviansk, the aggressor launched five attacks in the areas of the settlements of Platonivka, Zakytne and towards Rai-Oleksandrivka. One battle is still ongoing.
Towards Kramatorsk, the Defence Forces repelled two enemy assaults in the areas of the settlements of Minkivka and Novomarkove.
Towards Kostiantynivka, the invaders carried out 36 offensive operations in the areas around the settlements of Kostiantynivka, Oleksandro-Shultyne, Sofiivka, Pleshchiivka, Ivanopillia, Illinivka, Rusyn Yar, Stepanivka and Novopavlivka. Two engagements are still ongoing.
Towards Pokrovsk, the occupiers have attempted 57 times to dislodge our troops from their positions in the areas around the settlements of Bilytske, Dorozhne, Nove Shakhove, Rodynske, Novooleksandrivka, Myrnohrad, Shevchenko, Pokrovsk, Kotlyne, Udachne, Muravka, Novopidhorodne, Molodetske, Novopavlivka, Filiia, and Dachne. One skirmish is currently ongoing.
Towards Oleksandrivka, the enemy launched two attacks in the areas around the settlements of Zlahoda and Krasnohirsk. Orestopil came under enemy air strikes.
Towards Huliaipole, 20 attacks took place in the areas of Zaliznychne, Huliaipole, Myrne, Huliaipole, Zeleny and Dobropillia. The enemy carried out air strikes on the areas of the settlements of Vozdvizhivka, Yehorivka, Kopani, Huliaipole and Zelena Dibrova. One engagement is ongoing.
Towards Orikhiv, our defenders successfully repelled two enemy attacks near Stepove. The settlements of Veselianka and Orikhiv were subjected to air strikes.
Towards Kherson, the enemy made one futile attempt to advance near Bilohrudyi Island.
In other directions, there are currently no significant changes in the situation. No enemy attempts to advance have been recorded.
Ukrainian troops are wearing down the enemy along the entire line of contact and in the rear.
In February, at least 188 civilians were killed and 757 injured in Ukraine. The vast majority of civilian casualties (97%) occurred in areas controlled by the Ukrainian government. Civilians were killed or injured in 15 regions of Ukraine and in Kyiv. More than a third of the casualties were caused by long-range missiles and drones, mostly far from the front line. In February, aerial bombs caused 47% more casualties than in January.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko reported that Ukraine has received the European Union’s conditions for accession regarding the final three negotiation clusters. The next steps are the successful closure of the clusters and the signing of the EU accession treaty.
Recent war events in the east of Ukraine
Kharkiv oblast
Over the past 24 hours, 171 combat engagements were recorded.
Towards Southern Sloboda, russian forces made three attempts to breach Ukrainian defences in the direction of Vovchansk and Starytsia.
Towards Kupiansk, the russian army launched nine attacks towards Petropavlivka, Kurylivka, Hlushevka, Novoosynove, Kupiansk and Novoplatonivka.
On 16 March, a 63-year-old man was killed as a result of a russian drone attack on the Chuhuiv–M#love road. The strike on the vehicle occurred near the turn-off to Borivske in Shevchenkove community. On the same road, near Spodobivka, a 48-year-old woman was injured.
In Prosianka, Kindrashivka community, a russian FPV drone struck near an ambulance. At the time of the strike, medics were treating the wounded. The crew was unharmed, but the vehicle sustained damage.
Over the past 24 hours, Kharkiv and 16 settlements in Kharkiv oblast came under russian attack.
Ten people were injured as a result of the shelling. In Kharkiv, a 34-year-old man suffered an acute stress reaction, and men aged 61, 52 and 54 were also injured. In Martove, Pechenihy community, a 75-year-old woman was injured. In Prosianka, Kindrashevka community, an 84-year-old woman, a 70-year-old woman and a 74-year-old man were injured. Near Myrne, Shevchenkove community, a 48-year-old woman was injured, and near Horokhovatka, Borova community, a 65-year-old man was injured.
Medical staff also treated a 68-year-old man who was wounded on 13 March in Novoosynove, Kurylivka community.
Russian forces attacked Shevchenkivskyi, Nemyshlianskyi and Saltivskyi districts of Kharkiv with drones.
To strike Kharkiv oblast, russian forces used a missile of an unidentified type, KABs, UAVs of the Geran-2, Lancet and Molniya types, FPV drones and unmanned aerial vehicles of an unidentified type.
Residential buildings, farm buildings, civilian enterprises, a non-residential building, a car service centre, vehicles and power lines were damaged.
The transit evacuation centre in Lozova received 220 people over the past 24 hours. Since it began operating, 23,026 people have been registered there.
Donetsk oblast
Over the past 24 hours, russian troops launched 30 assaults on the positions of the Defence Forces near Kostiantynivka, Pleshchiivka, Ivanopil, Illinivka, Stepanivka, Rusyn Yar, Sofiivka and Novopavlivka.
Towards Pokrovsk, Ukrainian forces repelled 31 russian assaults. Towards Sloviansk, the Defence Forces repelled a further ten attempts by the occupiers to advance.
Towards Lyman, russian troops are storming Ukrainian positions daily without success. According to Oleksandr Borodin, Spokesman for the 3rd Army Corps, the russian army is stepping up infiltration, launching drones en masse and increasingly using UAVs. Every week, Ukrainian units there shoot down over 1,500 drones.
Units of the Ukrainian Defence Forces struck a communications hub in Manhush, as well as a russian military concentration area near Chasiv Yar.
Towards Pokrovsk, the russian army has increased the number of small infantry and motorised groups. According to the Ukrainian military, the occupiers are moving openly, across fields and roads without camouflage, and the Defence Forces are detecting them as they approach and destroying them.
In Donetsk oblast, White Angel police crews are recording cases of families with children being evacuated for a second time. People are returning to dangerous settlements and then asking for help again. Due to high drone activity by russian forces, transport has almost ground to a halt, so law enforcement officers and civilians have to cover part of the routes on foot. The evacuation is taking place under the threat of strikes, particularly in Druzhkivka, Oleksiievo-Druzhkivka and Mykolaivka.
On 16 March, Kramatorsk community came under russian shelling three times. In the morning, an FPV drone carrying a warhead struck a high-rise building; in the evening, a Molniya-2 drone damaged two residential buildings in a residential area, and later the russian army struck some warehouses. According to preliminary reports, there were no casualties.
During the night, russian troops struck the residential area of Oleksandrivka in Kramatorsk region and destroyed a private house. Rescuers found the bodies of a man and a woman under the rubble.
The russian army attacked the private sector of Kostiantynivka with an FPV drone. A local resident was injured and the building’s façade was damaged as a result of the strike on the residential building.
On 16 March, the police recorded 1,648 russian shelling incidents along the front line and in residential areas of Donetsk oblast.
Druzhkivka, Kramatorsk, Mykolaivka, Bilenke, Oleksandrivka, Oleksiievo-Druzhkivka, Andriivka and Zelene were under attack.
40 civilian facilities were damaged, including 29 residential buildings.
In Oleksiievo-Druzhkivka, the Russians carried out three strikes, including one with a KAB-250 bomb. Two civilians were killed and another person was injured. Two private houses were damaged.
Two people were also killed in Oleksandrivka. There, two apartment blocks and 12 private houses, a shop, a pharmacy and two civilian vehicles were damaged.
In Mykolaivka, one person was killed and another was injured. In the town, an apartment block and three private houses, as well as a garage, were damaged.
The russians attacked Druzhkivka with a KAB-250 bomb and three FPV drones. Four civilians were injured, and three private homes and two civilian vehicles were damaged.
In Kramatorsk, an apartment block and a private house were damaged; in Bilenke, a private house; and in Andriivka, two private houses and a garage.
The russians dropped three KAB-250 bombs on the village of Zelenе in Pokrovsk region. A private house was damaged.
In Mykolaivka, the White Angel crews evacuated over 20 adults, one child and 10 cats. Among those evacuated was a family who had left the village of Kalenyky on their own and were struck by a russian drone. Also among those evacuated was a woman who was taking not only her own pets but also cats that had been abandoned by their owners.
Luhansk oblast
Russian troops continue their attempts to occupy the part of Luhansk oblast currently held by the Ukrainian Defence Forces. To this end, the occupiers are shelling the area with all available weaponry, including tanks. Over the past 24 hours, they have used artillery three times, mortars six times, and have also been actively attacking with FPV drones. In total, the enemy carried out 19 assaults towards Lyman and Sloviansk.
In occupied Luhansk oblast, students are being forced to go to war in exchange for keeping their places at university. Such offers are being made to those attempting to retake their exams. They are told that they will be expelled anyway if they refuse, and are offered the chance to serve as drone operators to avoid being conscripted into the infantry. Those who agree are promised academic leave for the duration of their service.
Residents of Siverskodonetsk receive bills for cleaning and maintenance of public areas, even though the city has turned into a complete rubbish dump over the last 3.5 years. Residential neighbourhoods and streets are barely cleaned by the council, with mountains of rubbish lying in courtyards that haven’t been collected for months. Construction waste is left uncollected too. Instead, the occupying authorities are telling residents to clear the area themselves, and then pay for the council services on top of that.
What is happening now in the north of Ukraine
Kyiv oblast
According to Mykola Kalashnyk, head of the Regional State Administration, major repairs are underway at the ‘Thumbelina’ nursery school in Vasylkiv, which was damaged during a russian attack. The nursery has capacity for 240 children across 12 age groups; however, due to the renovation work, the children are temporarily attending other facilities in the community. The repairs are scheduled to be completed by the end of the school year.
A fully-fledged rehabilitation ward is being set up at the Vasylkiv Multidisciplinary Intensive Care Hospital, where military personnel and civilians will be able to undergo inpatient treatment and receive comprehensive rehabilitation following injuries and serious illnesses.
The Regional State Administration reported that the Donetsk Regional Centre for Sports Medicine, relocated from Bakhmut, has opened at the Kyiv Regional Clinical Hospital. The facility had to leave the temporarily occupied Bakhmut but managed to retain its team of specialists and medical equipment. It is now working with athletes from Kyiv oblast. The centre has all the facilities required for full-scale operation: medical support for athletes, diagnostics, functional examinations and rehabilitation.
The Ukrainian Women’s Guard will hold a one-day course in tactical medicine, scheduled to take place in the Obolon district of Kyiv on 21 March. During the training, participants will gain theoretical knowledge and practical life-saving skills: understanding critical bleeding and methods to stop it, applying a tourniquet, packing wounds and using an Israeli bandage. Registration is required.
Zhytomyr oblast
Yevhenii Gnativskyi, a displaced person from Kherson oblast and a Year 9 student at Lyceum No. 4 in Zhytomyr, took part in the 61st session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva. The trip was made possible by his involvement in the youth council of the international organisation Lumos. During a panel discussion, he spoke about the impact of the war on the education of Ukrainian children.
Sumy oblast
The City Council reported that on 16 March, russian forces attacked Vorozhba community by drones. A critical infrastructure facility, residential buildings, and power and internet lines were damaged.
According to the Regional Military Administration, as of the morning of 17 March, two people were killed and nine residents of Sumy oblast were injured over the past day as a result of russian attacks:
- In Sad community, a 40-year-old man was killed when a drone struck a truck loaded with grain;
- In Velyka Pysarivka community, a 48-year-old man was killed when a drone struck a motorcycle;
- In Sumy, five civilians (two women and three men) were injured by a UAV strike on a roadway; all received medical assistance and are being treated on an outpatient basis;
- On the outskirts of Sumy, a man was injured in a drone attack and hospitalised;
- In Shostka community, two residents (a woman and a man) were injured during the interception of enemy UAVs and received medical assistance;
- In Richky community, a 61-year-old man was injured in a UAV strike.
From the morning of 16 March to the morning of 17 March, russian forces carried out more than 90 attacks on 34 settlements across 19 territorial communities in the region. The highest number of attacks was recorded in Sumy and Shostka regions. The enemy used mortars, artillery, FPV drones, UAVs and guided aerial bombs. Air raid alerts in the region lasted 23 hours and 36 minutes over the past day.
Civilian infrastructure was damaged or destroyed:
- In Shostka community: an apartment building, non-residential premises, a vehicle and civilian infrastructure facilities were damaged;
- In Esman community: private houses and a civilian infrastructure facility were destroyed;
- In Hlukhiv community: a private house and non-residential premises were damaged;
- In Berezivka community: a residential house was damaged;
- In Yampil community: a civilian infrastructure facility was damaged;
- In Khutir-Mykhailivskyi community: civilian infrastructure facilities were damaged;
- In Seredyna-Buda community: civilian infrastructure facilities were damaged;
- In Vorozhba community: civilian infrastructure facilities, a private house and an administrative building were damaged;
- In Mykolaivska rural community: a civilian infrastructure facility was damaged;
- In Sumy community: apartment buildings, private households, vehicles, civilian infrastructure facilities and non-residential premises were damaged;
- In Velyka Pysarivka community: a civilian infrastructure facility and a motorcycle were damaged;
- In Sad community: a truck was destroyed;
- In Richky community: a private house was damaged.
Over the past day, nine people were evacuated from border communities by local authorities in cooperation with the State Emergency Service, the National Police and civil society organisations.
Chernihiv oblast
Oleksandr Seliverstov, Head of Novhorod-Siverskyi Regional Military Administration, reported that at around midnight on 16 March, russian forces attacked the centre of Novhorod-Siverskyi by two “Heran” strike drones. As a result of the strike, a local department store was completely destroyed. Nearby residential buildings had their windows shattered, while administrative and commercial facilities were also damaged by the blast wave. Approximately 175 subscribers were left without electricity.

Chernihiv Border Guard Detachment informed that during the day on 16 March, russian forces attacked four border communities in Chernihiv region: Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka, Horodnia and Snovsk. The enemy carried out tube artillery strikes (6 explosions), launched Shahed-type UAVs (2 explosions), a Molniia-type UAV (1 explosion), and Herbera-type UAVs (2 explosions), attacked by FPV drones (30 explosions), and dropped one explosive device from a UAV. Twelve settlements came under enemy fire.
Viacheslav Chaus, Head of the Regional Military Administration, said that Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko awarded a certificate of appreciation to Ruslan Honcharenko, a heating system specialist from Chernihiv. As head of a department at the municipal enterprise Teplokomunenergo, he coordinated the restoration of networks after russian attacks and ensured the stable supply of heating and hot water to residents. He also led an emergency team that travelled to assist Kyiv during the winter when the situation was most critical.
Chernihiv Regional Council announced that Chernihiv oblast also received 15 bicycles for social workers from volunteers in Belgium. The bicycles, provided by Subprior of Grimbergen Abbey, Karel Stautemas, as part of the initiative “Father Karel for Ukraine”, were distributed among five communities: Semenivka, Ivanivka, Kulykivka, Novobilouska and Horodnia.
Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine
Dnipropetrovsk oblast
Nikopol region. The russian forces attacked the region by drones and artillery, targeting the regional centre, Marhanets and Chervonohryhorivka communities. Fires broke out, and an agricultural enterprise was damaged.
Synelnykove region. A 63-year-old woman was injured as a result of a KAB strike in Pokrovske community. 2 private houses, a non-residential building and 2 outbuildings were destroyed by fire. In Ukrainka community, a private house was damaged due to a UAV strike.
Pavlohrad region. The enemy attacked Bohdanivka community by a UAV. A 30-year-old woman was injured. 2 private houses were destroyed and 3 houses and 7 vehicles were damaged.
Nikopol region. The russian forces attacked by artillery and drones, targeting Nikopol, Marhanets, Pokrovske rural, Myrove and Chervonohryhorivka communities. A 72-year-old man was injured. 4 multi-apartment and 4 private houses, an administrative building, an ambulance vehicle, 3 vehicles, an outbuilding, a greenhouse, infrastructure and power lines were damaged.
Synelnykove region. In Malomykhailivka community, 1 person was killed as a result of an FPV drone attack, and a 56-year-old man was injured. A vehicle was damaged. In Mezhova and Vasylkivka communities, there were FPV and UAV strikes. A 41-year-old man and a 71-year-old woman were injured. An evacuation vehicle was damaged and a private house caught fire.
Vinnytsia oblast
Fragments of a Geran-2 type drone were discovered in Vinnytsia oblast. They were neutralised and, together with other parts of the UAV, removed for further disposal.
Kirovohrad oblast
Andrii Raikovych, Head of Kirovohrad Regional Military Administration, informed that 29 residents of Kirovohrad oblast returned home during the last 2 prisoner exchanges. They are currently undergoing rehabilitation. A difficult path of recovery and reintegration into civilian life lies ahead. Once they return to their communities, they will be supported by specialists, psychologists and social workers.
Poltava oblast
Police Major Andrii Hrabovyi from Poltava oblast was killed while carrying out a combat mission. This occurred in early March 2026 in Donetsk oblast. He was 38 years old.
Cherkasy oblast
In Cherkasy, residents paid tribute to 2 defenders: Vladyslav Kotliar and Vadym Torhonskyi.
Vladyslav Kotliar was killed in combat in the eastern direction, where he served as an assistant grenade launcher operator.
Vadym Torhonskyi was a commander of an armored vehicle repair unit and was killed in battle in Donetsk oblast.
Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine
Zaporizhzhia oblast
Ivan Fedorov, Head of Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, reported that russian forces struck Zaporizhzhia, hitting near one of the terminals of a logistics operator. 8 employees were at work during the attack: 6 sustained concussions and 2 suffered cuts to the head and body. Also, several high-rise buildings in Zaporizhzhia were damaged as a result of the morning shelling.

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, on 16 March, the Defence Forces of Ukraine repelled 21 russian attacks in Huliaipole region. Fighting took place near Zaliznychne, Myrne, Zelene, Charivne, Huliaipilske and Varvarivka.
Ivan Fedorov, Head of the RMA, stated that on 16 March, russian forces carried out 814 strikes on 35 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast.
Mykolaiv oblast
Based on the information provided by Mykolaiv RMA, on the morning of 17 March, russian forces struck Ochakiv community, preliminarily by MLRS.
During 16 March, russian forces attacked Mykolaiv oblast by ballistic weapons and FPV drones. In Kutsurub community, 2 people were injured as a result of a strike on a bus.
Odesa oblast
According to Odesa RMA, during the night of 17 March, border guards in Odesa oblast repelled an air attack and destroyed 6 Shahed-131/136 strike drones.
Overnight, russia carried out a massive drone attack on Izmail. As a result of the strike, energy, industrial and port infrastructure facilities, as well as residential buildings, were damaged.
Kherson oblast
Referring to Kherson RMA, at approximately 11:30am, russian forces attacked Nova Kamianka in Mylove community by a UAV. A 66-year-old man sustained blast trauma and shrapnel wounds to the head, legs, chest and abdomen after the drone hit the yard of a house.
At around 10:30am, russian forces shelled Bilozirka. A 73-year-old woman and a 49-year-old man who were inside a house came under the attack. They sustained blast injuries and concussions.
Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine
Volyn oblast
The start of the minute of silence for Lutsk residents is planned to be announced through the city’s civil defense alert and information system. Announcements will also be distributed in local media, on official city council resources, and through the city chatbot Nazar.
Zakarpattia oblast
A new workshop has been opened at Mukachevo Vocational Polytechnic College with the assistance of Japanese investors. Here, young people will acquire a modern profession in the field of radio equipment and industrial automation.
Ivano-Frankivsk oblast
The RMA held a meeting with Lieutenant Colonel Vitalii Kornienko, Commander of the Military Unit 3042, who heads the 7th Artillery Brigade of the 2nd Corps “Charter” of the National Guard of Ukraine. They discussed issues of interaction and support.
Lviv oblast
The 1st winter rehabilitation and sports camp in Ukraine, League of the Unconquered, for veterans and military personnel, was held in Lviv oblast. 20 defenders from different parts of Ukraine who were injured during hostilities tested themselves in adaptive sports for 10 days – skiing, biathlon, swimming, archery, table tennis and crossfit.
Rivne oblast
Another evacuation train was received by Rivne oblast. 27 residents of Druzhkivka, Sloviansk, Kramatorsk and other settlements arrived from Donetsk oblast. Immediately upon arrival, people were registered, received medical and psychological assistance, and were given food packages. All arrivals were placed in communities of Rivne region.
Ternopil oblast
2 defenders from Ternopil will be able to get their own apartment. The city will help them with the first installments under the eOselia program – it will compensate for the amount of the first payment on a mortgage loan. In total, UAH 644,210 will be allocated for the 2 defenders.
Khmelnytskyi oblast
Khmelnytskyi City Council reported that 884 family members of fallen Heroes and participants of the Revolution of Dignity are receiving additional benefits for utility services.
Chernivtsi oblast
Chernivtsi signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 5-year cooperation within the framework of the Swiss-Ukrainian DECIDE project (Decentralization for the Development of Democratic Education). The DECIDE project helps Ukrainian communities implement a modern career guidance system for children and adolescents. It involves cooperation between schools, businesses and local authorities.
International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)
The 2nd meeting of the Energy Ramstein took place in Brussels. The meeting discussed Ukraine’s preparation for the next winter period and strengthening the country’s energy sustainability.
Actor Sean Penn received a symbolic Oscar from Ukrzaliznytsia. The statuette was made from the steel of a car damaged by a кussian attack. Yesterday the actor arrived in Kyiv. For the sake of this trip, he missed the Oscar award ceremony. This year he was awarded the golden statuette for his supporting role in the film One Battle After Another.
