What is happening now in the north of Ukraine
Kyiv oblast
The State Agency of Ukraine for the Management of the Exclusion Zone reported that an international project has been launched in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone to remediate radiologically contaminated areas affected by the russian occupation. Eric Howell, a representative of AFRY Norway, noted that the new project is a continuation of the initiative ‘Overcoming the consequences of military actions and occupation of the Chornobyl zone’ which ended in 2024. After de-occupation, experts recorded excessive radiation levels and surveyed about 50 objects and motorways.
The Office of the Prosecutor General reported suspicion of the commander of the russian Armed Forces. The investigation established that the suspected person was involved in the shooting of civilians and prisoners of war in Kyiv oblast. It is noted that during the occupation of part of oblast from late February to late March 2022, the russian commander was located between the settlements of Berezivka and Buzova in the Bucha district. As a result of his actions, 19 civilians and 4 ukrainian prisoners of war were shot by his subordinate russian military personnel. Seventeen civilians were killed, including a minor, as were all the prisoners.
The Centre for Training Citizens for National Resistance in the Kyiv oblast began operating in early 2023, and in almost a year and a half, more than 5,000 civilians have been trained there. The training is conducted by veterans of full-scale war. The programme includes 17 disciplines that develop not only skills but also self-confidence.
Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klychko announced that the Kyiv community had sent another 800 FPV drones of various types to the soldiers of the 24th and 28th separate mechanised brigades of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
According to the State Emergency Service, rescuers, Ukrzaliznytsia employees and Red Cross volunteers practised joint actions in emergency situations on one of the railway sections in Kyiv oblast.
Zhytomyr oblast
In Korosten, pyrotechnicians from the State Emergency Service of Ukraine neutralised an explosive device found in a field. The dangerous find was destroyed by sappers through a controlled explosion in a specially designated area.
According to the Regional State Administration, on 17 July, an event called ‘Supporting Those Who Protect’ was held in Zhytomyr oblast as part of the All-Ukrainian mental health programme ‘How Are You?’. The event was aimed at creating a safe space for communication, support and recovery.
78-year-old volunteer from Kherson, Hryhoriy Yanchenko, known as Uncle Hrysh, came to Zhytomyr for the third time to raise money for the military. Since 2014, Hryhoriy Yanchenko has been raising money for the Armed Forces of Ukraine near large shopping centres in various cities. In Zhytomyr, the volunteer set up shop with a music speaker, flags and a homemade box near a shopping centre at the Zhytomyr Market.
Sumy oblast
The General Staff of Ukraine reported that on Northern-Slobozhanske and Kursk front, Ukrainian forces repelled 21 assault actions since the beginning of the previous day. On 16 July, russian troops carried out 13 airstrikes, dropped 33 guided bombs, and launched 340 shelling attacks on Ukrainian positions and settlements, including seven by multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS).
According to the Military Administration, on the morning of 17 July, around 5:30am., russian forces struck Velyka Pysarivka. Four FPV-drone strikes damaged an enterprise. Later, russian troops shelled the private sector by mortars. Residential buildings and households sustained minor damage.
The Regional Military Administration informed that after 7am., the enemy launched a massive strike on Shostka region — russian UAVs hit several communities. As a result of the attacks, residential buildings were damaged and fires broke out. In recent days, Shostka region has been under daily enemy shelling.
Shostka District Military Administration reported that on 17 July, the russian army struck Seredyna-Buda in Shostka region by a Shahed drone, resulting in the destruction of a residential house by fire.

During the day, from the morning of 16 July to the morning of 17 July, russian forces carried out nearly 100 shelling attacks on 41 settlements across 14 territorial communities in the oblast. The highest number of strikes was recorded in Sumy and Shostka regions. The enemy actively used guided aerial bombs (nearly 40 strikes), dropped explosive grenades from UAVs (over 10 strikes), and also launched FPV-drone strikes, UAV attacks, MLRS, and missile strikes.
As a result of russian attacks over the past day in Sumy oblast, the following damage was reported:
- In Seredyna-Buda community — private households and a non-residential building;
- In Sumy community — a private house, a non-residential building, and a vehicle;
- In Shostka community — a passenger car and private houses;
- In Bilopillia community — two private households.

According to Sumy Regional Police, in one of the settlements in Sumy region, sappers destroyed a hazardous unmanned aerial vehicle. Specialists from the explosive ordnance disposal unit examined the area and identified it as a russian strike drone that failed to detonate upon impact.
Over the past day, 12 people were evacuated from border communities by local authorities in cooperation with units of the State Emergency Service, National Police, and public organizations.
Chernihiv oblast
Chernihiv Border Guard Detachment reported that on 16 July, russian forces attacked three border communities in Chernihiv oblast: Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka, and Snovsk. The enemy carried out mortar shelling (3 explosions), MLRS strikes (13 explosions), FPV-drone attacks (14 explosions), and dropped explosive devices from UAVs (12 explosions). A total of 11 settlements came under fire. As a result of FPV-drone strikes on Khotiivka in Semenivka community, three residential houses caught fire.
‘North’ Operational Command informed that over the past day, russian forces attacked a village in Nizhyn region of Chernihiv oblast by Shahed-type drones. As a result, a public facility was damaged.
Ripky Regional Court sentenced in absentia a 38-year-old serviceman from one of russia’s motorized rifle brigades, originally from Tuva, for committing sexual violence against a woman in March 2022. According to National Police of Chernihiv oblast, the victim is a 32-year-old resident of a village in Chernihiv region. The russian soldier repeatedly came to her home and later threatened to return and repeat the assault.
The hospice hospital in Bakhmach received an ambulance from German city of Heidenheim an der Brenz. The vehicle was donated to the medical facility by the charitable foundation ‘Osnovy Krainy’.
Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine
Dnipropetrovsk oblast
Mykola Lukashuk, Head of the RMA, reported that during the night, air defence forces were active in the oblast. Ukrainian defenders shot down 22 enemy UAVs. 1 person was killed in Dnipro and 5 injured – men aged 35, 37, 40, 52 and 70.
Fires broke out, and several businesses were damaged. Explosions were heard in Dnipropetrovsk oblast, particularly in Solone and Slobozhanske communities.
As a result of the attack, a utility building and a greenhouse were damaged. Overnight, the enemy continued to attack Nikopol region. In the regional centre, 5 people were injured in drone strikes. A civilian vehicle was hit, resulting in a fire that injured a 65-year-old man and a 58-year-old woman. A fire truck arrived to extinguish the blaze, but the enemy deliberately targeted the emergency crew. 3 male rescuers aged 21, 42 and 31 were injured.
A private house and a utility building were damaged. The russian forces shelled Marhanets community by MLRS. In addition, the enemy launched a drone attack on Mezhova community in Synelnykove region, damaging infrastructure.
During the day, the enemy attacked 2 regions in the oblast – Nikopol and Synelnykove. Nikopol region was hit by drones and artillery. The enemy targeted the regional centre, Pokrov and Marhanets communities.
In Nikopol, an 85-year-old woman was injured and received the necessary medical assistance. Several fires broke out and 2 private houses were damaged. According to updated reports, morning strikes in Nikopol damaged a private house, a utility structure and a gazebo.
The enemy also used GABs to strike Novopavlivka and Velykomykhailivka communities in Synelnykove region. A 53-year-old man was injured.
Also, updated information from Kryvyi Rih confirmed that administrative buildings, shops, a private house and a museum were damaged in today’s attack.
Kirovohrad oblast
Oleksii Kondratovets, who had been freed from russian captivity on 14 June, returned to his hometown of Dolynka in Kropyvnytskyi region, Kirovohrad oblast. His wife Olena said that he serves in the 28th Separate Mechanised Brigade named after the Knights of the Winter Campaign. He was taken prisoner in Donetsk oblast on 6 June 2023.
Poltava oblast
A memorial ceremony was held in Poltava for serviceman Andrii Kravchenko. He voluntarily joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine on the first day of russia’s full-scale invasion.
Cherkasy oblast
Ihor Taburets, Head of Cherkasy RMA, reported that in Cherkasy oblast, the enemy struck Kaniv community by a UAV. The drone hit an infrastructure facility.
Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine
Zaporizhzhia oblast
Ivan Fedorov, Head of Zaporizhzhia RMA, reported that on 16 July, the russian military launched 602 attacks on 14 cities and villages in Zaporizhzhia oblast. 420 of these strikes were carried out by unmanned aerial vehicles, primarily FPV drones. The following settlements came under fire: Malokaterynivka, Rozumivka, Dobropillia, Kamianske, Shcherbaky, Huliaipole, Mala Tokmachka, Novodanylivka and Charivne.
Mykolaiv oblast
According to the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, on 16 July, russian forces carried out 4 FPV drone attacks and shelled Kutsurub community by artillery. 2 private houses were damaged in Dmytrivka village and another caught fire. Power supply equipment was affected, leaving 355 consumers without electricity. However, power was restored to all affected users later that afternoon.
In Ivanivka village, shelling damaged a private house and a vehicle. Also, a fire broke out on the grounds of a former farm in Kutsurub village.
The waters of the Ochakiv community and the coastline of Ochakiv city came under artillery and drone attacks yesterday. There were no casualties reported.
Odesa oblast
According to the Ukrainian Navy, as of 6am, no enemy ships were detected in the Black Sea. Enemy ships were absent in the Sea of Azov. In the Mediterranean Sea, 3 enemy ships were present, 1 of which is equipped with Kalibr cruise missiles with a total volley capacity of up to 4 missiles.
Kherson oblast
According to the Regional Military Administration, in the evening, russian troops dropped explosives from a drone on Kherson, injuring a 36-year-old man. He sustained a blast injury and multiple shrapnel wounds.
Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of Kherson RMA, reported that russian forces attacked an ambulance vehicle by a drone. The medical team was on its way to a call in Zymivnyk. A 49-year-old paramedic and a 65-year-old medical technician were injured and the vehicle was damaged.
The RMA reported that russian forces shelled Mylove village, striking a local invincibility centre facility. The roof, walls and windows were damaged. There were no casualties reported.
Referring to the CMA, around 9:30am, russian troops shelled Dniprovskyi district of Kherson. A 55-year-old man sustained a blast injury and shrapnel wounds to his head and left shoulder.
The RMA informed that russian artillery struck Bilozirka. A 36-year-old man was hospitalised with a blast injury, concussion, brain trauma and shrapnel wounds to his arm.
The CMA reported that at approximately 6:20am, russian forces used a drone to attack Dniprovskyi district of Kherson. A 53-year-old man was injured, suffering a blast injury and shrapnel wounds to the thigh, neck and forearm.
According to the RMA, in the morning, a russian drone attack targeted a house in Dudchany village of Mylove community. The roof, facade, windows and doors were damaged. There were no casualties reported.
Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of the RMA, confirmed that an 83-year-old resident of Kherson oblast was killed as a result of yesterday’s russian shelling. His body was found next to a destroyed car on the highway near Beryslav.
On 16 July, russian troops shelled 38 settlements in Kherson oblast. 3 people were injured and 10 private houses and several vehicles were damaged.

Volyn oblast

As a result of the russian strike on Chernivtsi on 12 July, 74-year-old Vasyl Klypych, resident of the city of Snyatyn, Ivano-Frankivsk oblast, died in hospital. Chernivtsi medics fought for his life for almost 5 days. However, due to the multiple shrapnel wounds he received, he could not be saved.
Lviv oblast
Volunteers from Sheptytskyi have already donated 800 camouflage nets to the front since the beginning of the war.
A commemorative event dedicated to the memory of graduates who heroically were killed in the russian-Ukrainian war was held at Sosnivska Gymnasium №14 of Sheptytsk community. During the event, UAH 9,344 was raised, which was sent to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
A concert and charity fair were held in Rybnik on the feast of the Ascension. During the event, over UAH 20,500 were raised, which will support the 81st Separate Airmobile Brigade of the Armed Forces. Volodymyr Verkhovynets, defender from the village of Rybnik, serves in it.
Rivne oblast
Horodot community has sent 4 quadcopters to soldiers defending Yunakivska community, Sumy oblast. This is part of the assistance within the framework of the all-Ukrainian project Side by Side. United Communities.
Ternopil oblast
A unique musical group has appeared at the Center for Support of Veterans and Families of Heroes in Ternopil, uniting veterans of the russian-Ukrainian war who are passionate about music. The group includes five defenders – musicians: a drummer, a keyboard player, a bass guitarist and 2 guitarists.
Khmelnytskyi oblast
The Stroke Center of Khmelnytskyi City Hospital has received the highest international award for the 2nd time in a row – Diamond Status from the European Stroke Organization (ESO). The center was opened in 2019 in a completely renovated hospital department. At that time, UAH 3.5m was spent on its opening.
Chernivtsi oblast
