What is happening now in the north of Ukraine
Kyiv oblast
The Regional Military Administration reported that on the night of 17 December, russian drones attacked Kyiv oblast. As a result of the shelling, two two-storey residential buildings were damaged in Vyshhorod region. No civilians were injured.
Anatolii Fedoruk, Mayor of Bucha, said that in the territory of Bucha City Council, a russian OZM-72 fragmentation anti-personnel mine was discovered. The explosive device has a lethal radius of up to 25 metres, and for safety reasons all City Council staff were evacuated. The mine was transported to a specialised site for neutralisation.
The Service for Restoration and Development of Infrastructure in Kyiv oblast informed that in Bucha, restoration works are under way at a multi-apartment residential building at 11/6 Hmyri Street that was damaged as a result of hostilities. The main construction works have now been completed. Once the works are finalised, 110 residents will be able to return to their homes.
Bilohorodka community has received another energy box from the Government of France. The power unit is equipped with solar panels with a total capacity of 104 kW and is capable of providing long-term power supply to large facilities. The first installation will be used to ensure the stable operation of critical infrastructure facilities. Preparatory work to install the unit is already under way.
Irpin was visited by a delegation from the Special Commission of the Republic of Azerbaijan on Prisoners of War, Missing Persons and Hostages. Discussions focused on potential joint projects, including the construction of an art centre, the reconstruction of a youth sports school, a cultural centre and a multi-apartment residential building. The delegation from the Republic of Azerbaijan also visited the Irpin “Linhvist” Lyceum, an educational institution that was fully rebuilt after destruction with the support of the Azerbaijani government.
Zhytomyr oblast
The Regional Military Administration reported that as of December 2025, 1,195 shelters of various types have been arranged in functioning educational institutions in Zhytomyr oblast, covering 98% of total needs. Ensuring a safe educational environment remains one of the key priorities for educational institutions under martial law.
In Oliivka community, 38 homeowners have already received compensation for destroyed housing. Work is ongoing to document damage and provide compensation to residents whose homes were affected by a wartime emergency that occurred on the night of 09–10 September 2025. At that time, residential buildings in Soniachne village, as well as summer houses in the gardening cooperatives “Kashtan”, “Krona”, “Soniachne” and “Dzherelo 1”, sustained damage and destruction.
In Zviahel, a radiation shelter has become operational following a major overhaul costing UAH 14.5m. The facility can accommodate up to 500 people simultaneously and meets established safety requirements.
Sumy oblast
Mykola Noha, Mayor of Shostka, reported that a russian attack on the morning of 17 December destroyed a civilian infrastructure facility in Shostka. Two multi-storey residential buildings were also damaged. According to the State Emergency Service in Sumy oblast, the strike caused a fire and damaged a vehicle.

Sumy Regional Military Administration informed that in Seredyno-Buda community, an 18-year-old man was injured in a mortar strike over the past 24 hours.
Between the morning of 16 December and the morning of 17 December, russian forces carried out more than 30 attacks on 18 settlements across nine territorial communities in the oblast. The highest number of strikes was recorded in Sumy and Shostka regions. The enemy used artillery, mortars, FPV drones, UAVs and guided aerial bombs. Air-raid alerts in the oblast lasted a total of 13 hours and 41 minutes over the past day.
Civilian infrastructure was damaged or destroyed as follows:
- in Hlukhiv community, a civilian infrastructure facility and a private house were damaged;
- in Shostka community, a civilian infrastructure facility was destroyed and multi-storey residential buildings were damaged;
- in Krasnopilla community, civilian infrastructure facilities were damaged;
- in Esman community, a shop building was destroyed;
- in Seredyno-Buda community, private residential houses were damaged.
Over the past 24 hours, local authorities, together with units of the State Emergency Service, the National Police and non-governmental organisations from border communities, evacuated 11 people.
According to the National Police in Sumy oblast, near Sumy, police explosives experts recovered an unidentified UAV from a lake. The UAV was transported to a designated site for destruction by controlled detonation.
The Regional Military Administration announced that in Trostianets community, a unique “green” reconstruction project has been implemented at a building damaged by the enemy. A heat pump and a solar power plant are being used to provide heating and electricity to the building. The project was implemented in partnership with international organisations, with financial support from Greenpeace. The five-storey building was shelled by russian forces using armoured personnel carriers during the occupation in March 2022.

Chernihiv oblast
Chernihiv Border Guard Detachment reported that over the course of 16 December, russian forces attacked four border communities in Chernihiv oblast: Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka, Horodnia and Snovsk. The enemy carried out mortar shelling (10 explosions) and attacks using automatic grenade launchers (14 explosions), as well as strikes by Molniia-type UAVs (one explosion) and FPV drones (four explosions). Six settlements came under enemy fire.
In Bobrovytsa community, 35,213 square metres of territory remain mined. According to the HALO Trust Representation in Ukraine, confirmed threats from anti-personnel and anti-vehicle mines, as well as unexploded ordnance, persist near two villages in the community. By the end of 2025, HALO cleared and handed over 41,046 square metres of land to the community.
The City Council informed that at Chernihiv City Hospital No. 3, renovation of the rehabilitation department and procurement of necessary equipment have been completed using UAH 44m. from the city budget. The project was implemented in stages from 2024, allowing the department to continue operating without interruption and providing care to patients, around 50% of whom are servicemembers.
Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine
Dnipropetrovsk oblast
Nikopol region: Occupying forces continued attacks on the regional centre as well as Pokrovske and Myrove communities using drones and artillery. A multi-apartment building, three private houses, two outbuildings, four shops, infrastructure and a power line were damaged.
Synelnykove region: The enemy struck Mezhivka community by an FPV drone and used guided aerial bombs against Pokrovske community. A private house was damaged.
Nikopol region: Occupying forces continued to terrorise the regional centre and Pokrovske, Marhanets, Chervonohryhorivka and Myrove communities by drones and artillery. A 63-year-old man was wounded and will receive treatment at home. A fire broke out, with a private house burning. Three private houses, two outbuildings, a kindergarten, a vehicle, infrastructure and power lines were damaged. According to updated information, a 76-year-old woman was killed as a result of shelling in Nikopol the previous day.
Kryvyi Rih region: The enemy attacked Zelenodolska community by a drone, damaging a private house.
Air defence forces shot down an enemy UAV. No casualties or damage were reported.
Kirovohrad oblast
In Kropyvnytskyi, an installation dedicated to missing and captured defenders is to be installed. The project was initiated by Valentyna Nepomenko, Head of the non-governmental organisation “Families in Defence of Warriors of the 57th Brigade”. The installation will take the form of a bush accompanied by an informational plaque. The project is planned for implementation in March next year. Several locations are being considered, including Heroes of the Maidan Square, the square in front of the City Council, Kovalivskyi Park, and the area near the Administrative Services Centre.
Poltava oblast
A resident of Poltava oblast, Roman Shevchyk, was killed. This occurred on 6 August 2025 while he was carrying out a combat mission.
Roman Nazarenko, Deputy Head of the Village Council reported that in Pishchane community, volunteers and the village council provided materials to homeowners whose properties were damaged in a russian Shahed drone attack on 7 December. In total, 11 households in three villages were affected. The consequences of russian attacks in the community are being addressed not for the first time.
Cherkasy oblast
Ihor Taburets, Head of the Regional Military Administration, said that in Cherkasy oblast, air defence forces neutralised two russian UAVs. No casualties or injuries were reported.
Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine
Zaporizhzhia oblast
Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration reported that, at around noon on 17 December, the enemy carried out three strikes on Zaporizhzhia and the Zaporizhzhia region. The russians used guided aerial bombs, hitting residential buildings. Twenty-nine people were injured. Two apartment buildings suffered significant destruction. Twelve multi-story buildings, private houses, an infrastructure facility, and an educational institution were also damaged.

Today, 17 December, the russian army attacked a car in Kushuhum with an FPV drone. As a result of the strike, two men aged 43 and 55 were injured. russian forces also attacked a private car in Kushuhum community using an FPV drone. One person was injured.
According to Zaporizhzhia RMA, yesterday, 16 December, the occupiers carried out 668 strikes on 26 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast. russian troops conducted 10 air strikes on Novoiakivlivka, Nove Pole, Boikove, Rizdvianytsia, Zorivka, Huliaipole, Ternuvate, and Zaliznychne. 426 UAVs of various modifications, mainly FPV drones, attacked Zaporizhzhia, Kushuhum, Novomykolaivka, Chervonodniprovka, Stepnohirsk, Prymorske, Stepove, Shcherbaky, Huliaipole, Novoandriivka, Novodanylivka, Mala Tokmachka, Charivne, Varvarivka, Solodke, Preobrazhenka, and Rybne. Six MLRS strikes were carried out on the territories of Rozumivka, Prymorske, Stepove, and Huliaipole. 226 artillery strikes were carried out on Chervonodniprovka, Stepnohirsk, Prymorske, Stepove, Shcherbaky, Huliaipole, Novoandriivka, Novodanylivka, Mala Tokmachka, Charivne, Varvarivka, Solodke, and Rybne. 107 reports of damage to housing, vehicles, and infrastructure facilities were received. Six people were injured as a result of enemy strikes on Zaporizhzhia.
According to the General Staff, as of 16:00 on 17 December, since the beginning of the day, Ukrainian defenders repelled six russian attacks near Huliaipole and Varvarivka towards Huliaipole, while two more combat engagements are ongoing. The occupiers twice attempted to advance in the area of Plavni towards Orikhiv. Mykolaiv oblast
According to Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, yesterday, 16 December, the enemy attacked Ochakiv and Kutsurub communities three times with FPV drones. As a result of one of the attacks, a warehouse facility, a tractor, and two passenger cars were damaged in the village of Dniprovske. There were no casualties.
Odesa oblast
According to Odesa Regional Military Administration, on the night of 17 December, the enemy once again attacked civilian facilities in Odesa oblast with strike drones. As a result of two waves of attacks, the transport infrastructure facility was damaged. A fire broke out, which was extinguished by rescuers. There were no casualties or injuries.
According to Odesa Regional Military Administration, over the past four days, energy workers have restored the technical capability to supply power to 583,700 households in Odesa oblast. All critical infrastructure was also fully powered. Due to extensive damage to the energy system, it is impossible to connect all customers at the same time, and 32,300 consumers remain temporarily without electricity.
Kherson oblast
The head of Kherson Regional Military Administration, Oleksandr Prokudin, reported the deaths of two people as a result of russian attacks on 17 December. A man was killed as a result of an enemy UAV attack in Dniprovskyi district. His identity is currently being identified. At around 13:20, russians attacked a motorcyclist with a drone in Dariivka. As a result of the enemy strike, a 57-year-old man sustained fatal injuries.
A man who was injured in the morning as a result of a russian drone attack in Dniprovskyi district of Kherson was taken to the hospital. The 54-year-old Kherson resident sustained a blast injury and a traumatic amputation of the lower leg.
At approximately 09:20, russians attacked a man with a drone in Dniprovskyi district of Kherson. The 59-year-old Kherson resident sustained a blast injury, multiple facial wounds, and a traumatic amputation of the foot.
At around 6:50, russian occupiers shelled Dniprovskyi district of Kherson. As a result of the strike, a 55-year-old man was injured. He was diagnosed with a blast injury and concussion.
A woman who was injured today as a result of a russian drone attack in tDniprovskyi district of Kherson sought medical assistance. The 59-year-old Kherson resident sustained a concussion, blast injury, and closed craniocerebral trauma.
The Police of Kherson oblast reported that yesterday, 16 December, russian troops shelled civilian infrastructure in Kherson and Beryslav regions using artillery and mortars and deployed UAVs of various types. Kherson, Antonivka, Kizomys, Dniprovske, Nezlamne, Veletenke, Rozlyv, Novodmytrivka, Tomyna Balka, Sofiivka, Stanislav, Shyroka Balka, Molodizhne, Bilozerka, Myroliubivka, Oleksandrivka, Poniativka, Zelenivka, Yantarne, Sadove, Beryslav, Urozhaine, Novoraisk, Odradokamianka, Burhunka, Lvove, Virivka, Olhivka, Tiahynka, Kozatske, and Vesele were attacked by the enemy. russian strikes caused damage to two private houses, a municipal enterprise, a minibus, a car, and a gas pipeline. Eight people were injured as a result of russian shelling.
The Southern Defense Forces of Ukraine reported that through the joint efforts of the 39th Separate Coastal Defense Brigade, FPV drone crews of the 34th Unmanned Systems Center “Venom,” and Lasar’s Group, a russian 2S6 Tunguska surface-to-air missile and gun system was destroyed in Kherson oblast. The elimination of this system significantly worsened the enemy’s ability to protect its equipment from Ukrainian strikes.

Volyn oblast
In June, 21 servicemen received certificates for housing for veterans and their family members in Volyn oblast. In total, 68 out of 73 people included in the 2025 needs will receive compensation from these funds.
Zakarpattia oblast
The RMA held a meeting with the participation of representatives of the Civil-Military Cooperation Department of the Operational Command West, the regional territorial center for recruitment and social support. They discussed psychological support and preserving the memory of those who gave their lives for Ukraine.
Ivano-Frankivsk oblast
Ivano-Frankivsk community sent 5 ecoflows to the 4th Battalion of the 102nd Territorial Defense Brigade.
Lviv oblast
The 1st burial of unidentified bodies of deceased Ukrainian servicemen took place in Ivano-Frankivsk community, Yavoriv region. 6 Defenders were buried at a new cemetery in Ivano-Frankivsk community. The memorial service was held in the Church of St. Prince Volodymyr, and community residents, clergy and government representatives joined the joint prayer.
In the city of Strii, a room for leisure and integration of internally displaced persons has been opened at the Higher Vocational School №35. The space was created as a multifunctional location for study, work, recreation and informal communication.
Rivne oblast
Rivne oblast is preparing to implement a new National Action Plan to implement UN Security Council Resolution 1325 Women, Peace, Security until 2030. The document integrates the principles of gender equality into all areas of security and defense.
Ternopil oblast
In Ternopil, the families of 16 more victims (deceased) from the missile strike that occurred on 19 November will receive financial assistance from the city. This is a one-time payment of UAH 100,000. Previously, such assistance was already provided to the relatives of 16 victims.
Khmelnytskyi oblast
Khmelnytskyi City Council reported that 156 participants in the russian-Ukrainian war will receive compensation of 50% of the cost of tuition at universities.
Chernivtsi oblast
Chernivtsi City Council held a meeting with representatives of the veteran community. They discussed parking privileges for combatants.
International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)
Pistorius, Defense Minister of Germany, stated that the country has delivered 2 promised Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine, as well as the 9th IRIS-T system. Next year, Germany will deliver “a significant number of AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles to strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses”.
