What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Sumy oblast

The City Military Administration reported that in Sumy community, private residential houses were damaged as a result of russian UAV attacks on 17 April. In Stetskivskyi starostat, two private households and fences were damaged, and a gas pipeline was cut. Another strike occurred on the outskirts of Sumy in the private sector, damaging a residential house. No casualties were reported.

The State Emergency Service of Sumy oblast informed that during the night of 17 April, an enemy UAV struck a fire and rescue unit in Shostka region. The building was partially damaged. At the time of the strike, personnel were in a shelter.

The City Military Administration, in Pishchanske starostat of Sumy community, an elderly woman was injured following a UAV strike. She received psychological assistance on site and was transported to a medical facility. The drone hit a private house and destroyed the roof.

The Regional Military Administration reported that on the evening of 16 April, a 56-year-old resident of Bilopillia community was killed as a result of a russian attack. The man sustained fatal injuries following a drone strike.

The Regional Military Administration informed that as a result of russian shelling across the oblast over the past day, 16 April, two people were killed and five were injured in Sumy oblast.

Over the past day, from the morning of 16 April to the morning of 17 April, russian forces carried out more than 90 attacks on 31 settlements across 17 territorial communities of the oblast. The highest number of attacks was recorded in Sumy and Shostka regions. The enemy used mortars, artillery, FPV drones, UAVs, and guided aerial bombs. Air raid alerts in the oblast lasted for 20 hours and 52 minutes over the day.

Civilian infrastructure facilities were damaged and destroyed:

  • in Esman community, private residential houses were destroyed, and a school building, outbuildings, and a civilian infrastructure facility were damaged;
  • in Hlukhiv community, residential and non-residential premises, and an outbuilding were damaged;
  • in Seredyna-Buda community, a private residential house was destroyed, and outbuildings and a civilian infrastructure facility were damaged;
  • in Shalyhyne community, a private household was destroyed;
  • in Berezivka community, a non-residential building was damaged;
  • in Sumy community, a vehicle was destroyed, and civilian infrastructure facilities, a private residential house, and outbuildings were damaged;
  • in Chernechchyna community, a private residential house was damaged;
  • in Lebedyn community, a private residential house and an outbuilding were damaged;
  • in Mykolaivka settlement community, private residential houses and a civilian infrastructure facility were damaged;
  • in Okhtyrka community, a civilian infrastructure facility was damaged;
  • in Buryn community, private households and a civilian infrastructure facility were damaged;
  • in Bilopillia community, a private passenger vehicle was damaged.

Over the past day, 87 people were evacuated from border communities by local authorities in cooperation with units of the State Emergency Service, the National Police, and public organisations.

The Regional Military Administration informed that in Sumy oblast, construction of underground schools continues to create safe educational spaces for children. To date, eight underground schools have already been built in the oblast, with a further seven under construction. The projects are being implemented with support from the state, local communities, and international partners, including Lithuania and the Howard Buffett Foundation.

In Sumy, seven more families have moved into a modular settlement for internally displaced persons. These are residents of Myropillia, Krasnopillia, and other border communities who were forced to leave their homes due to constant shelling. In total, 29 families are already living in two buildings. Construction of a third building is nearing completion.

Chernihiv oblast

Viacheslav Chaus, Head of the Regional Military Administration, reported that in Chernihiv and the surrounding region, since the beginning of the week from 13 to 17 April, air raid alerts were declared 23 times, lasting more than 50 hours in total. According to him, since the start of the week russian forces have increased the number of drones and strikes directly targeting Chernihiv.

Oleksandr Seliverstov, Head of Novhorod-Siverskyi District Military Administration, said that at 10:49am on 17 April, russian forces struck civilian infrastructure in Semenivka town by  Molniya-type strike UAV. No information on casualties was received. According to the Regional Military Administration, the building of the City Council, which had already been largely destroyed, was damaged.

The City Council informed that during the night of 17 April, the enemy carried out a large-scale UAV attack on Chernihiv. A strike was recorded on an industrial facility, where a fire broke out. russian forces also struck a number of infrastructure facilities. As a result of the attack, Chernihiv Combined Heat and Power Plant temporarily suspended operations. According to JSC “Chernihivoblenergo”, around 6,000 subscribers in the city were left without electricity.

According to Viacheslav Chaus, Head of the Regional Military Administration, in a village on the outskirts of Chernihiv, a Heran UAV exploded in a private yard. The facade of a house and a passenger vehicle were damaged.

Chernihiv Border Guard Detachment reported that over the course of 16 April, russian forces attacked four border communities of Chernihiv oblast: Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka, Horodnia, and Snovsk. The enemy carried out shelling using mortars (9 explosions) and MLRS (20 explosions), conducted UAV strikes of the Molniya type (2 explosions), carried out FPV drone strikes (28 explosions), and dropped explosive devices from UAVs (9 explosions).

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of the Regional Council, reported that the occupiers attacked the regional by drones and artillery. Strikes targeted Nikopol, Chervonohryhorivka, Pokrovske rural, Marhanets, and Myrove communities. A fire broke out. Two multi-apartment buildings and three private houses, an agricultural enterprise, an outbuilding, infrastructure, and a gas pipeline were damaged.

In Dnipro, a UAV attack caused a fire. A transport enterprise, premises, and a multi-storey building were damaged. Following yesterday’s strike in Novooleksandrivka community, two men were injured. A gymnasium, a private house, and a vehicle were damaged.

As a result of UAV strikes, fires broke out. Women aged 63 and 54, as well as a 49-year-old man, were injured. Morning UAV attacks also injured men aged 29 and 28.

In Myrove community, a 72-year-old man was killed. Men aged 50, 72, 28, and 33, as well as a 72-year-old woman, were injured. The enemy continued attacks by drones and artillery, also targeting the regional centre, Chervonohryhorivka, Pokrovske rural, and Marhanets communities. Fires broke out. Four private houses, a gymnasium, a minibus, equipment, five vehicles, an enterprise, three outbuildings, and a gas pipeline were damaged.

As a result of enemy attacks, a 65-year-old woman and a 64-year-old man were also injured.

Kirovohrad oblast

Two brothers, servicemen Oleh and Kostiantyn Zalizniak from Vodiane village in Petrivka community, were killed in the war with russia one day apart. 

Poltava oblast

In Poltava oblast, the death of 22-year-old serviceman Vladyslav Pustovyi from Hradyzk community has been confirmed. He had been considered missing for a prolonged period. 

Cherkasy oblast

Ihor Taburets, Head of the Regional Military Administration, informed that air defence forces shot down two russian UAVs in Cherkasy oblast. 

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Today, 17 April, russian forces once again attacked Zaporizhzhia. As a result of the shelling, seven people were injured, including a child. Residential buildings and vehicles were damaged in three districts of the city. Fires broke out. Later, the Chief Directorate of the National Police in the region reported that during the rescue operation at the site of the morning drone attack on Zaporizhzhia, a repeat strike occurred — a patrol officer was at the epicenter. He was not injured and continued helping people evacuate.

According to Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, yesterday, 16 April, the occupiers carried out 726 strikes on 39 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast. russian forces conducted 15 airstrikes on Zaporizhzhia, Komyshuvakha, Tavriiske, Zarichne, Yurkivka, Huliaipilske, Kopani, Rivne, Vozdvyzhivka, Vasylivske, and Verkhna Tersa. 454 UAVs of various modifications (mostly FPV) attacked Zaporizhzhia, Komyshuvakha, Kushuhum, Novomykolaivka, Novooleksandrivka, Lukasheve, Bilenke, Hryhorivske, Stepnohirsk, Prymorske, Stepove, Lukianivske, Pavlivka, Huliaipole, Zaliznychne, Shcherbaky, Mali Shcherbaky, Novodanylivka, Novoandriivka, Mala Tokmachka, Charivne, Bilohiria, Huliaipilske, Hirke, Zelene, Varvarivka, Dobropillia, Pryluky, Staroukrainka, Olenokostiantynivka, and Preobrazhenka. Four MLRS strikes targeted Pavlivka, Zaliznychne, and Olenokostiantynivka. 253 artillery strikes hit Stepnohirsk, Prymorske, Stepove, Lukianivske, Pavlivka, Huliaipole, Zaliznychne, Shcherbaky, Novodanylivka, Novoandriivka, Mala Tokmachka, Charivne, Bilohiria, Varvarivka, Dobropillia, Pryluky, Hirke, Huliaipilske, Staroukrainka, and Olenokostiantynivka. Three people were killed, and 13 were injured as a result of enemy attacks on Zaporizhzhia, Zaporizhzhia region, and Polohy region.

The General Staff reported that as of 16:00 on 17 April, the Defense Forces were repelling five enemy attacks toward the settlements of Huliaipilske, Zelene, Zaliznychne, and in the area of Huliaipole. One battle is ongoing. The enemy attacked twice in the areas of Shcherbaky and Stepnohirsk towards Orikhiv. Over the past day, 16 April, the Defense Forces of Ukraine repelled 10 russian attacks towards Huliaipole.

As informed by the General Staff, during the night of 17 April, the Defense Forces of Ukraine struck UAV control sites of the russian army in Zaporizhzhia oblast. It is noted that the strikes targeted UAV control sites near  Uspenivka and Zelene in Zaporizhzhia oblast.

Mykolaiv oblast

Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration reported that yesterday, 16 April, the enemy launched a massive attack on the region using Shahed-131/136-type UAVs. Energy and critical infrastructure were targeted. As a result of the attack, settlements in Mykolaiv and Bashtanka regions were temporarily left without electricity. Over the past day, 17 Shahed 131/136-type strike UAVs and various types of decoy drones were shot down or suppressed over Mykolaiv oblast.

Yesterday, the enemy attacked Ochakiv and Kutsurub communities eight times with FPV drones. As a result of one of the strikes, a private house was damaged in the village of Dmytrivka. There were no casualties.

Odesa oblast

Odesa Regional Military Administration reported that during the night of 17 April, russian forces once again launched a massive attack on Odesa oblast using strike drones. Port, transport, and residential infrastructure facilities were damaged. Fires broke out at several locations, including within the Danube Biosphere Reserve, but were later extinguished by rescuers. Administrative buildings, equipment, and containers were damaged. At least six private residential houses were hit.

In Odesa, the identities of all those killed as a result of the russian attack on 16 April were established. According to the spokesperson of Odesa Regional Prosecutor’s Office, Inna Verba, a total of eight people were killed in the strike. In addition, 19 people were injured. Five of them were injured during the first drone strike, and another 14 were injured as a result of a ballistic attack that occurred at around 04:00 in the morning.

Kherson oblast

Kherson Regional Military Administration reported that on 17 April, at around 13:30, russian forces attacked Dniprovskyi district of Kherson with a “Molniya”-type drone. As a result of the strike, a 59-year-old woman who was outside sustained shrapnel wounds to the head and blast injuries.

At 11:00, russians attacked Osokorivka in Novovorontsovka community with a UAV. An FPV drone struck a 70-year-old man who was riding a motorcycle. He sustained blast injuries, a concussion, and multiple shrapnel wounds to the head, limbs, and torso.

At approximately 06:00, russians shelled Novoraisk with MLRS. A 63-year-old man sustained shrapnel wounds to the leg, a concussion, blast injuries, and a closed traumatic brain injury.

At around 06:30, russians attacked a 70-year-old man near Inzhenerne who was riding a bicycle with a UAV. As a result of the strike, he sustained blast injuries and shrapnel wounds to his limbs.

The Chief Directorate of the State Emergency Service in Kherson oblast reported that a minibus caught fire in the morning as a result of a russian drone attack in Dniprovskyi district of Kherson. There were no injuries.

The Police of Kherson oblast reported that yesterday, 16 April, the russian forces attacked Kherson, Inzhenerne, Kizomys, Rozlyv, Zorivka, Tomyna Balka, Bohdanivka, Naddniprianske, Prydniprovske, Novodmytrivka, Doslidne, Nezlamne, Chornobaivka, Dniprovske, Stanislav, Oleksandrivka, Shyroka Balka, Sofiivka, Honcharne, Komyshany, Sadove, Bilozerka, Romashkove, Yantarne, Beryslav, Davydiv Brid, Novoraisk, Shevchenkivka, Orlove, Zolota Balka, Urozhaine, Tokareve, Tiahynka, Odradokamianka, Lvove, Burhunka, Kozatske, and Vesele. Six apartment buildings and eight private houses, a municipal enterprise, an administrative building, a gas station, 11 vehicles, a gas pipeline, a tractor, and a warehouse were damaged. 10 people were injured as a result of russian aggression, including a police officer who was wounded by a mine explosion.

The General Staff reported that as of 16:00 on 17 April, the enemy carried out two unsuccessful assault actions toward the Antonivskyi Bridge, Kherson.

The head of the regional military administration, Oleksandr Prokudin, reported that a group of children aged from three to 17 was evacuated from the temporarily occupied left bank of Kherson oblast. An adult child deprived of parental care was also evacuated. According to him, all the children experienced pressure from the occupation authorities.

Kherson Regional Military Administration reported that Beryslav community received humanitarian aid from the Southern Hub of UNHCR. The cargo included essential items and technical equipment to improve the living conditions of vulnerable populations.

A mobile medical brigade of the Red Cross Society started operating in Kochubeivka community. The U.S. Department of State funds the project. Since the beginning of the year, the regional organization of the Ukrainian Red Cross Society launched three such brigades. The teams are equipped with transport to provide medical assistance in the remote villages of the region. Each crew consists of a family doctor, a nurse, and a driver.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

In Novovolynsk urban territorial community, 52 fallen Defenders of Ukraine were awarded the Honorary Citizen of the Community title (posthumously). The awarding of awards to the families of fallen Heroes is scheduled for the National Flag Day of Ukraine.

Zakarpattia oblast

The IV Beltane Charity Festival will take place in Uzhhorod Castle on 18–19 April. The event aims to promote the culture, traditions, and gastronomy of the oblast, as well as raise funds for the needs of the 413th Separate Unmanned Systems Regiment Reid.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

A veterans’ space for defenders and their families has opened in Kosiv region. There, they can receive comprehensive support.

Lviv oblast

King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, together with the President of Ukraine, began his visit to Lviv by honoring the memory of the defenders of Ukraine.

Another family-type orphanage has been created in Lviv. It is special because five children with disabilities live here. Three of them are from Dnipro. This was made possible thanks to the Ridni foundation, UNICEF and the Hosanna religious community, which provided the house.

Rivne oblast

A delegation of the Czech Republic, led by Jiri Borcel, Consul General in Lviv, visited Rivne oblast. They discussed the details of the implementation of the European Union program, which involves the modernization of Rivne Regional Clinical Hospital.

Ternopil oblast

104 defenders from Ternopil will receive a one-time cash grant to purchase equipment. Since the beginning of the year, 2,288 soldiers from the community have received such assistance.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Andrii Medzhybizhsky returned home after two years of enemy captivity. The serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine was captured by enemy forces in February 2024.

Chernivtsi oblast

Chernivtsi conducted the last earthly journey of Oleksandr Sukhoi, soldier of military unit A0281. He was killed in January 2025 while performing a combat mission in the Kursk region.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

The Netherlands will send a mine countermeasures ship to Ukraine. This is the 5th ship in Ukraine’s future mine countermeasures fleet and the 2nd one transferred by the Netherlands.
