War in Ukraine today: latest news, 16 June, 2024 (photo)

It has been the 844th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 7pm:   

On 16 June, the enemy increased the pace of offensive and assault operations, looking for ways to penetrate Ukrainian defences and trying to dislodge Ukrainian units from the occupied lines. Ukrainian defenders are giving a worthy rebuff to the occupiers, destroying personnel and equipment. The number of combat clashes along the entire front line increased to 88. 

Towards Kharkiv, the russian invaders attacked twice Vovchansk. Units of the Defense Forces successfully repelled one enemy assault, and another one continues. On Vovchanski Khutory, enemy aircraft from the direction of belgorod (russia) carried out two strikes with sixteen NARs.   

Towards Kupiansk, Ukrainian defenders are holding back the enemy’s onslaught near Berestove and Stepova Novoselivka. Currently, two clashes are ongoing there.  The occupying forces struck the village of Pisky-Radkiv with a guided aerial bomb, and Synkivka was hit by sixteen NARs. 

Towards Lyman, the enemy attacked 10 times in the vicinity of Makiivka, Nevske, Druzheliubivka and Hrekivka. It actively uses aviation, in particular,  there were three strikes with six KABs on Druzheliubivka, and two more strikes with six KABs on Shyikivka. Ukrainian soldiers repelled three assaults, and seven more clashes are ongoing. 

According to preliminary information, the losses of the enemy in this area amounted to 54 occupiers, one armoured personnel carrier and an ammunition depot. 

Towards Pokrovsk, the occupiers do not slow down the pace of the offensive.  The enemy attacked the defensive lines of Ukrainian defenders 36 times.  25 assaults of the aggressor were unsuccessful, another 11 attacks are ongoing.

Towards  Kurakhove, there were 10 combat clashes.  Ukrainian defenders repelled five enemy attacks. The same number continues. Airstrikes by KABs were carried out in the vicinity of Hirnyk and Kostiantynivka.  According to preliminary information, the losses of the enemy in this area amounted to 56 occupiers and one electronic warfare station. 

Towards the Dnipro River area, Ukrainian defenders repelled five attacks by russian invaders in the vicinity of Krynky. The situation is under control.  

In other areas, the situation has not changed significantly.


The State Emergency Service of Ukraine reports on the start of the mine safety information campaign Notice the Changes. The campaign is aimed at consolidating the habit of following safety rules in society. 

Oleksandr Kamishin, Head of the Ministry of Strategic Industries of Ukraine, says that Ukraine will produce Lynx armoured fighting vehicles together with Rheinmetall. TAlready this year, the first Lynx has been released.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that towards Kharkiv, russia unsuccessfully attacked the units of the Defence Forces near Vovchansk. More than 180 invaders were eliminated in this area, one armoured personnel carrier, two artillery systems and four vehicles were destroyed.

Oleh Syniehubov, Head of the RMA, reported that the invaders attacked the Borova community, Izium region. Three civilians were injured in Pisky Radkivski village: a 33-year-old pregnant woman, a 13-year-old boy and a 59-year-old man. All of them are in moderate condition, hospitalised. An ambulance and more than 10 residential buildings were damaged. The roof of a private house was damaged and a fire started. The details are being established.

Yesterday at 3pm Petropavlivka village of Petropavlivka community, Kupiansk region, was hit. A private house was destroyed as a result of hostile mortar shelling.

At 10:30am,  Kurylivka village of Kurylivka community, Kupiansk region, was shelled. As a result of the shelling from MRLs, 3 private houses were damaged and a man injured.

At 10am, Bohuslavka village of Borova community, Izium region, was shelled. A car was damaged as a result of hostile shelling.

Towards Kharkiv, Ukrainian troops successfully stopped 6 enemy attempts to improve their position near Vovchansk and Tykhe.

Towards Kupiansk and Lyman, the total number of combat engagements increased to 15. The enemy attempted to push the Ukrainian defence forces back from their positions near Petropavlivka, Pishchane, Andriivka, Hrekivka, Makivka, Nevske and Serebrianka forest. 12 attacks have been repelled so far, and three engagements continue near Hrekivka and Nevske. The situation is under control of Ukrainian defenders.

A total of 11856 people have been evacuated from Chuhuiv, Kharkiv and Bohodukhiv regions since 10 May.

Donetsk oblast

The General Staff reported that since the beginning of the day, 41 combat engagements have taken place on the frontlines: the situation is tense towards Pokrovsk and the russian army is active towards Siversk.

The 12th Azov Special Forces Brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine said that Ukrainian troops advance in Serebrianka forestry: the defence forces have advanced 1km in depth and 2km along the front.

7 people, including two children aged 4 and 7, were injured as a result of the morning shelling of Nova Poltavka in Illinivka community. The children’s injuries are minor. Two adults are in hospital in critical condition. This morning, russians dropped a half-tonne guided aerial bomb on the village, damaging 9 houses, 2 cars and an infrastructure facility.

Olena Filipova, medical director of Kostiantynivka multidisciplinary intensive care hospital, and Olha Hosteva, Director of Myrnohrad Central City Hospital, informed that 4 of 7 people injured in the shelling of Nova Poltavka village were taken to Myrnohrad hospital. The injured child is in the trauma unit and another is at home. Two more injured were taken to a hospital in Kostiantynivka and will be treated on an outpatient basis.

The operational situation in the oblast as of the morning of 16 June is as follows:

Volnovakha region. 3 people were killed and 5 injured in Ulakly of Velyka Novosilka community.

Pokrovsk region. In Kurakhove community, a social infrastructure facility in Kurakhivka was damaged and Kurakhove shelled.

Kramatorsk region. One house was destroyed in Lyman community and 4 were damaged in Torske, another 1 was destroyed and 1 damaged in Zarichne. In Kostiantynivka community, 2 private houses were damaged: in Kostiantynivka and Mykolaivka.

Bakhmut region. An infrastructure facility was damaged in Toretsk community. 7 private houses were damaged in Chasiv Yar community.

In total, russians shelled settlements in Donetsk oblast 8 times over the day. 59 people, including 11 children, were evacuated from the frontline.

Vadym Filashkin, Head of Donetsk Regional Military Administration, reported that yesterday russians killed 3 civilians in Ulakly. Another 5 people were injured in the oblast over the day.

Luhansk oblast

In recent weeks, the enemy has been constantly attacking near the settlements liberated in autumn 2022. The invaders are attacking these villages with all available weapons. It is extremely dangerous for civilians to stay there. Yesterday, a 35-year-old man from Makiivka was convinced to leave. Krasnorichensk military administration helped him to get to Sloviansk and buy a train ticket to Poltava oblast, where he plans to live in the future.

Towards Kupiansk and Lyman, the enemy tried to push the Defence Forces from their positions near Andriivka, Hrekivka, Makiivka, Nevske and Serebrianka forest. 12 attacks have been repelled so far. The situation is under control of Ukrainian defenders.

The invaders attacked Nevske, Makiivka, Stelmakhivka and Kuzemivka by mortars 69 times. Another 29 times they used cannon artillery near Stelmakhivka, Kuzemivka and Nevske. 6 times they used rocket artillery to hit Kuzemivka, Nevske and Makiivka.

Artem Lysohor, Head of Luhansk Regional Military Administration, reported that in Bilovodsk region, the invaders set up a military practice range. The russians periodically train their personnel between Pluhatar and Novospasivka villages. Locals complain that they have lost their peace.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

Hostomel community military administration reported on the work of the headquarters investigating war crimes committed on its territory. The headquarters is documenting all crimes so that each occupier is held accountable, and in the future, the evidence will become the basis for supporting the prosecution in international courts.

A new recovery building will be built on the basis of Kyiv Regional Mental Health Centre. It will include a rehabilitation space connected by a corridor to the main building of the centre. It will offer services of rehabilitation therapists, psychologists, masseurs and other medical specialists.

A veteran development centre has been opened in Kyiv at the Open International University of Human Development Ukraine. This is the third such centre in the capital, and there are 15 across Ukraine. According to the Ministry of Veterans Affairs of Ukraine, all centres operate on the basis of universities that are barrier-free and adaptive. Veterans with disabilities will be able to study and acquire a new profession.

Bucha city media presented the project “Bucha: City of the Unbreakable. Return to Life”. Its goal is to highlight stories and events that demonstrate strength and resilience of Bucha community in hard times. The project consists of a series of videos introducing real people who, through their actions and efforts, bring the city back to normal, making it better and stronger.

The RMA reported an increase in the regional order for the training of skilled workers, professional junior bachelors and bachelors by almost 20% compared to the pre-war years. This year, vocational education institutions have increased the regional order for construction professions and those for electrical production (electricians, welders, welders, machine operators), as there is an acute shortage of personnel in these areas.

Bucha City Council reported that the volunteer center Together to Victory celebrated the event – the production of a thousandth camouflage net for the military of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. For a year and a half of tireless work, volunteers have woven 44,408 square meters of camouflage nets. Volunteers also sew stretchers for evacuation of the wounded and collect various aid for the front.

The first Equality March since the full-scale invasion took place in Kyiv. The marchers gathered near the Teatralna metro station and marched through the city centre for no more than 20 minutes.The event was attended by activists, the military, representatives of diplomatic missions and international organisations, foreign politicians and international observers. 

Zhytomyr oblast

A police station was opened in the village of Vasylivka, Berezivka community, Zhytomyr oblast. It was equipped in the starostat premises and a car was bought. The police station in the community was opened as part of the Community Police Officer security project.

Sumy oblast

 At night and in the morning of 16 June, russians attacked the border areas and settlements of Sumy oblast 8 times. There were 27 explosions caused by mortar attacks, FPV drone attacks and UAV drops. Khotin, Velyka Pysarivka, Esman, Seredyna-Buda communities were shelled.

The russian forces attacked Sumy oblast 12 times, there were 25 attacks from various types of weapons. Seven border communities came under fire: Yunakivka, Bilopillia, Myropillia, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Esman, Seredyna-Buda.

Sumy police reported that on 15 June, three private houses and two outbuildings were damaged as a result of shelling. According to the South military command, two houses were damaged in Myropillia.

Mykola Noha, mayor of Shostka, reported that a russian missile strike on Shostka on 14 June killed one person and left 7 wounded. According to him, three residents are currently in intensive care.

On 15 June, the regional SES reported that pyrotechnic units seized and destroyed 47 pieces of ammunition found in four regions in Sumy oblast. These included two artillery shells, a mortar shell, two hand grenades and 42 rounds of ammunition. The ammunition was detected in Sumy, Shostka, Konotop and Okhtyrka regions.

Sumy Regional Prosecutor’s Office reports that a woman who passed on the locations of Ukrainian military formations and weapons depots in Sumy oblast to representatives of the russian federation was sentenced to 15 years in prison. The woman was of russian origin and recruited by an FSB officer at the beginning of the full-scale invasion. According to the coordinates she sent to her curator in the messenger, russia planned to carry out a series of strikes on the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

The Association of Mothers and Wives of Defenders of Ukraine in Sumy oblast invites women to join. The organisation is made up of women from the families of Ukrainian soldiers who have united to help each other and work effectively with partners to provide comprehensive support to the families of defenders.

Chernihiv oblast

The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine reported that russian troops attacked the borders of Chernihiv oblast 7 times with drones, mortars and cannon artillery. Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semeniva and Snovsk communities were under enemy fire.

The first project of a digital memorial is planned to be created in Ichnia. The team of the Memorial Memory Platform is developing the project together with the local history museum and community members. Currently, the museum is collecting stories about the events of the city occupation. 

Serhii Dedenko, Head of the community, said that a surgeon from Syria, Tarek Al Hames, started working in Semenivka City Hospital. The doctor responded to a vacancy announcement in the border community. He studied in Ukraine at Lviv State Medical University, stayed in Ukraine to live and work, and speaks Ukrainian well. 

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Council, reported that last night and in the morning the enemy attacked Nikopol region 6 times. The occupiers attacked the region’s center and Marhanets community with kamikaze drones and artillery. The shelling caused a fire, damaging 10 private houses, 4 outbuildings, an unused building, 4 power lines and 2 gas pipelines.

During the day, the occupiers attacked Nikopol region about fifteen times. They attacked with kamikaze drones, dropped ammunition from drones, and shelled the region’s center, Myrove and Marhanets communities with artillery. A 57-year-old man and a 60-year-old woman were injured in the attack. They both sustained shrapnel wounds. A multi-storey building, a country house, 4 private houses, infrastructure facilities and a car were damaged.

Vinnytsia oblast

From June 10 to 16, it became known about the death of 23 defenders from Vinnytsia oblast. 

Poltava oblast

Kremenchuk animal shelter hosts more than a hundred animals from the occupied and front-line territories. They are taken care of by volunteers of the Tails Charitable Foundation. Dogs and cats are evacuated to the shelter by volunteers who are in the frontline areas.

Cherkasy oblast

In Uman, residents paid tribute to serviceman Serhii Shcherbatiuk. He was killed in action in Luhansk oblast.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Ivan Fedorov, Head of Zaporizhzhia RMA, reported that on 15 June, the occupiers struck Zaporizhzhia oblast 424 times. 7 settlements came under enemy attack.

213 drones of various modifications attacked Huliaipole, Levadne, Robotyne, Mala Tokmachka, Malynivka and Novoandriivka. There were 8 MLRS strikes on Robotyne and Mala Tokmachka. Also, 203 artillery strikes targeted the areas of Huliaipole, Mala Tokmachka, Novoandriivka, Robotyne, Levadne, Malynivka and Novoprokopivka.

4 reports of housing destruction were received, but no civilians were injured.

Since 14 June, russia has been keeping 9 ships on duty in the Sea of Azov, 3 of which are Kalibr cruise missile carriers with a total salvo of up to 24 missiles. Melitopol residents vacationing in Kyrylivka periodically observe military ships close to the shore.

A new American drone has taken control over Kyrylivka and the ships in the Sea of Azov. The long-endurance reconnaissance drone MQ-4C Triton will coordinate missile strikes on military ships in the Sea of Azov near Kyrylivka in Melitopol region. It will be able to provide targeting for the Armed Forces of Ukraine to launch missile or drone strikes on russian ships, as ships in the Sea of Azov are closer to the front line than those in the Black Sea, reducing the flight time for Ukrainian missiles.

Mykolaiv oblast

According to Mykolaiv RMA, on 15 June, russia shelled the waters of Ochakiv community 3 times at 11:28am, 12:15pm and 5:39pm. There were no casualties reported.

Mykola Marinov, Deputy Head of Mykolaiv RMA for tourism, informed that the first resort season after the war in Mykolaiv oblast is planned to be held in selectively demined areas to allow businesses to operate. Demining the beaches is a critically important task before the future resort season can be resumed.

Odesa oblast

Referring to the Ukrainian Navy, as of the morning of 16 June, 4 russian missile carriers capable of a combined salvo of 28 Kalibr missiles are on combat duty in the Black and Azov Seas. Also, 2 more Kalibr carriers with a combined salvo of 24 missiles are on duty in the Mediterranean Sea. In total, there are 9 russian ships on duty in the Black and Azov Seas and another 3 in the Mediterranean.

According to Odesa City Council, Odesa Mayor Hennadii Trukhanov met with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Spain to Ukraine, Ricardo Lopez-Aranda Jagu. The ambassador expressed his support and solidarity with residents of Odesa, who are enduring difficult times due to increased enemy attacks. Ricardo Lopez-Aranda Jagu states that Spain is joining all measures related to security, defence and recovery of Ukraine. Humanitarian aid is provided through international funds, and its volume exceeds the aid given to any other country.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis mentioned his visit to Odesa, where a russian missile struck the port, emphasising the importance of protecting port infrastructure. The Greek politician highlighted that the conflict’s consequences affect shipping safety and Ukraine’s exports, which could lead to rising food prices. Greece promises to continue supporting Ukraine by facilitating negotiations to achieve peace, excluding Ukrainian capitulation as a conflict resolution option. The Greek politician made this statement at the Peace Summit in Switzerland.

Kherson oblast

Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of Kherson RMA, reported that on 14 June, Novokairy, Tiahynka, Dudchany, Stanislav, Veletenske, Kachkarivka, Oleksandrivka, Bilozirka, Beryslav, Yantarne, Burhunka, Kizomys, Olhivka, Lvove, Tokarivka, Prydniprovske, Novodmytrivka and Kherson came under enemy attacks and airstrikes. The russian military targeted residential areas, damaging 7 private houses. There were also strikes on a car wash, a car garage, an excavator and a private car.

On 15 June, the russian military carried out an artillery strike on Antonivka village, a suburb of Kherson. The shelling damaged a gas pipeline, 2 private houses and a car. Drones of various types were also directed at the village. There is currently no information on casualties.

According to the Southern Defenсe Forces of Ukraine, they continue to inflict fire damage on enemy locations, firing positions and rear areas. It was confirmed that 127 enemy personnel were eliminated. The enemy also lost 48 units of weapons and military equipment: 11 guns, 2 mortars, 29 armoured vehicles, 2 reconnaissance UAVs, 1 electronic warfare station, 1 Murom-M surveillance system, 1 motorcycle and 1 quad bike. Also, a fuel storage site, a field supply point, a UAV pilot accommodation, a control panel and UAV launch site, and 3 observation points were destroyed.

Moreover, russian troops attempted to storm the temporarily occupied territories of Kherson 6 times. After suffering losses, the enemy retreated to their initial positions.

Journalist Tom Watling from The Independent reveals that russian authorities are brainwashing kidnapped Ukrainian children, assuring them they will have all the benefits in russia and offering them 100,000 rubles to “move to any russian city”. The report tells the story of 5 teenagers who were taken to russia or occupied territories by the invaders before they were eventually returned to Ukraine.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

Lutsk City Council reported that the community sent a Whaly 435 motor boat with a Yamaha F60 engine, a Mitsubishi L200 pickup, 3 Mavic 3, 2 Mavic 3 PRO, 5 Mavic 3T, 10 FPV drones, 3 Starlink, a Senopex dota 5 thermal sight, an AGM Taipan thermal monocular, 28 car batteries and car tires to the military.

Zakarpattia oblast

The Path of Dignity: Struggle for Human Rights Forum was held in Uzhhorod. The Annual Report of the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on observance and protection of human and citizen rights and freedoms in Ukraine in 2023 states that every 5 appeals to the Ombudsman of Ukraine come from the families of servicemen, every 10 – from IDPs.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

A Safety Classroom was opened in Kalush region. Here, children will get ready for emergency situations, learn the basics of fire prevention, mine safety, civil defence, how to provide first aid. A school psychologist will provide a free consultation. The classroom is provided with materials from UNICEF Ukraine.

Lviv oblast

A large charity gastro-dinner was held in Lviv in support of defenders. 16 top chefs of Ukraine, Sakartvelo and Azerbaijan presented their culinary masterpieces. UAH 5,1m was raised for the military.

On the facade of Domazhyr school, Yavoriv region,  a memorial plaque was opened to the fallen military serviceman Vasyl Borukh, history teacher who taught children here for over 30 years. Senior soldier Vasyl Borukh, nicknamed Historian, was awarded with the Honour and Glory award for his personal bravery during combat missions. He was killed on 12 July, 2023 in Zaporizhzhia oblast.

Rivne oblast

5 dental institutions in Rivne oblast provide free prosthetics to military personnel. Within the framework of the program, 18 orthopaedic dentists will work in the oblast. Such services are available to combatants, certain categories of military personnel, and people who became disabled as a result of the war. The state will spend UAH 14,984 per patient. The package includes a consultation, X-ray, pain relief, manufacturing and installation of dentures. No tooth extraction or treatment is provided.

Ternopil oblast

In Ternopil, veterans from different parts of Ukraine compete in the Victory of the Invincibles. In total, over 100 participants are taking part, including war veterans, military personnel, representatives of law enforcement agencies and cadets from different cities of Ukraine. Competitions take place in adaptive sports like bench press, rowing on a simulator, bicycle riding and kettlebell jerk.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Khmelnytskyi City Council allocated additional financial assistance. UAH 620,000 was allocated for 11 families of prisoners or missing persons, over UAH 900,000 for 42 family members of fallen Heroes, almost UAH 1.5m for rehabilitation and treatment of 120 military personnel, over UAH 600,000 for 108 active military personnel and for 27 households that suffered from attacks by a russia was allocated almost UAH 900,000.

Chernivtsi oblast

During the trip to the front line, Ruslan Zaparaniuk, Head of RMA, presented the Grateful Bukovyna medal to Vitalii Binda, Commander of the 10th Battalion of the Separate Mountain Assault Brigade Edelveis. In March 2023, the soldier was awarded with the Steel Cross badge by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

The Peace Summit was held on 15-16 June, 2024. Key topics were radiation, nuclear, food safety and the release of prisoners and deportees. The joint communiqué of the Summit was signed by 80 countries and 4 organisations.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, met with Kamala Harris, Vice President US. They discussed the arrival of weapons from the defence packages announced by the US.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, met with Salome Zurabishvili, President of Georgia. They discussed issues of bilateral cooperation and security challenges for both countries.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, met with Nikos Christodoulidis, President of Cyprus. They discussed implementation of the Peace Formula and the expected decisions regarding the approval of the negotiating framework and the start of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union in June.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, met with Alassane Ouattara, President of the Republic of Ivory Coast. They discussed world food safety.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, met with Surangel Whipps Jr, President Palau. The issue of environmental safety was discussed. This meeting was the 1st contact at the highest level between the states.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, met with William Ruto, President Kenya. The issue of food safety was discussed. They considered the possible participation of Kenya in the creation of hubs for Ukrainian grain in African ports.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, met with Javier Miley, President Argentina. They discussed further steps in the implementation of individual points of the Peace Formula.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, met with His Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. Humanitarian support for Ukraine, the return of Ukrainian children and the exchange of prisoners were discussed.
