War in Ukraine today: latest news, 17 June, 2024 (photo)

It has been the 845th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression.

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6pm:   

The majority of fighting was towards Pokrovsk.

The number of combat engagements along the entire frontline increased to 89.

Towards Kharkiv, three combat engagements are ongoing near Vovchansk. A total of nine hostile attacks were registered here and near Lyptsi. According to preliminary information, the invaders lost 111 personnel today. Ukrainian troops also destroyed a tank, an armoured combat vehicle and 23 enemy UAVs.

Towards Pokrovsk, the situation remains tense. There have been 37 combat engagements since the beginning of the day. The Ukrainian defence forces successfully repelled 22 russian assault attacks. Another 15 battles are ongoing. The situation is under control. The enemy is suffering significant losses, especially in manpower, currently 290 dead and wounded invaders are known. The count is ongoing.

Towards Vremivka, russian invaders attempted to attack our positions five times that day. Fighting continues near Staromaiorsk, Vodiane and Urozhaine.  

The situation in other sectors remained unchanged.

Units of the Defence Forces are bravely restraining enemy attempts to advance into the depths of Ukraine’s territory, inflicting fire damage on the invaders and depleting their offensive potential along the entire frontline.

Prosecutor General of Ukraine Andrii Kostin at the Peace Summit in Switzerland reported that law enforcers have already documented nearly 130,000 cases of war crimes committed by the russian occupiers, including 301 cases of sexual violence. According to confirmed reports, russians have killed more than 12,000 civilians, including 551 children.

Minister of Justice Denys Maliuska said that more than 4,500 prisoners have applied to serve in the army. 4,000 people passed a military medical examination and were found eligible for military service. Another 300 prisoners, out of those who applied, were found ineligible.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

According to the General Staff, towards Kharkiv, as of 7pm, there were three combat engagements near Vovchansk. A total of nine enemy attacks were recorded there and near Lyptsi today. Based on preliminary information, the invaders lost 111 personnel today.

At 2:30am, the enemy attacked Borivska Andriivka village of Borova community, Izium region. A private household and outbuildings were damaged.

Yesterday at 3:26pm, the enemy attacked Pisky Radkivski village of Borova community, Izium region. The enemy shelling damaged 4 houses and an ambulance. 3 people were injured: a 13-year-old boy, a man and a woman.

At 2:31pm, the enemy attacked Shyikivka village of Izium region. As a result of the enemy’s air shelling, 4 private houses, outbuildings and a car were damaged.

At 2:30pm, the enemy attacked Druzheliubivka village of Borova community, Izium region. The shelling damaged 8 private houses.

Towards Kharkiv, the invaders attacked near Vovchansk five times. Three of the aggressor’s assaults were repelled by our defenders. At the moment, two combat engagements are still ongoing.

Towards Kupiansk, the enemy attempted four times to push our units back from their positions near Synkivka, Stepova Novoselivka and Berestove. Two of the enemy’s attacks were successfully repelled, and fighting continues near Synkivka and Stepova Novoselivka.

A total of 11,859 people have been evacuated from Chuhuiv, Kharkiv and Bohodukhiv regions since 10 May.

The enemy continues to attack the settlements of Kharkiv oblast and destroy civilian infrastructure. Currently, about 50,000 residents of the oblast are without electricity due to the enemy’s actions. The work is ongoing to restore the power supply, but it is complicated by the location of these settlements near the border.

Business operations are complicated by incessant air raids, which last an average of 16 hours. Power outage schedules are also in place.

At least 26 people were injured and five killed in Kharkiv oblast as a result of russian shelling between 10 and 16 June. Most of the deaths and injuries were recorded last week as a result of russian airstrikes, including by D-30 UMPBs.

According to the General Staff, towards Kharkiv. russian troops became more active: as of 1pm, there were four combat engagements near Vovchansk. The russian federation is trying to push the units of the defence forces from their positions with the support of aviation, two air strikes were recorded. Lyptsi and Zakharivka also were under airstrikes.

Towards Kupiansk, Ukrainian troops have repelled four attacks so far, and another one is ongoing. Fighting took place near Pishchane, Hrekivka and Makiivka.

Towards Kharkiv, the invaders are trying to build up their positions but are losing equipment. Yurii Povkh, Spokesman for the Kharkiv operational-tactical group, said that this equipment is being destroyed by kamikaze drones.

Oleh Syniehubov, Head of the RMA, reported that yesterday at  11:50pm, the enemy attacked a children’s camp in Kyivskyi district. One of the buildings was damaged as a result of the shelling by the KABs. There was no information on casualties.

In Munich, Germany, on the eve of the Ukraine-Romania match, a part of the stand from Kharkiv’s Soniachnyi Stadium, which was destroyed by the russian army in May 2022, was installed. Volunteers recreated a fragment of the destroyed stand on Wittelsbacherplatz. A rally in support of Ukraine was held there.

Yuliia Orlova, CEO of Vivat Publishing House, confirmed that as a result of the destruction of the Factor druk printing house, Vivat Publishing suffered tens of millions in losses, and three employees resigned.

Donetsk oblast

According to the General Staff’s Facebook page in a summary as of 1pm, the number of engagements increased to 20 towards Pokrovsk. Also russians are concentrating forces near Novooleksandrivka and Yevhenivka.

Nazar Voloshyn, Spokesman of the Khortytsia operational-strategic group, informed that the russian military has increased its influence towards Chasiv Yar and surrounding villages. Over the past week, there have been 65 combat engagements there.

The press service of Donetsk police stated that yesterday russians injured ten residents, including two children.

The russian army attacked the oblast 1,799 times. The enemy shelled 4 settlements: Krasnohorivka, Selydove, Toretsk and Nova Poltavka.

26 civilian objects were damaged, including 16 residential buildings, an administrative building, businesses, a gas pipeline and cars.

The invaders dropped a KAB-500 bomb on Nova Poltavka, injuring seven civilians, including two children born in 2017 and 2020. 9 private houses, two cars and a gas pipeline were destroyed.

Also russian forces struck Selydove using a KAB-500 bomb. Three private houses, an administrative building and enterprises were damaged.

An elderly couple aged 65 and 72 were injured in Krasnohorivka as a result of shelling.

The White Angels unit rescued last residents from the frontline towards Avdiivka.

The police evacuated four people from Vozdvyzhenka and two from Vovche. The frontline is almost close to these villages and the enemy is shooting at the houses.

The armoured car also had room for pets, such as chickens, ducks and rabbits.

While the evacuation was going on, the russians were shelling the neighbourhood, so the crew had to cover the most dangerous parts of the road at top speed. About seven residents remain in Vovche and a few more in Vozdvyzhenka.

Yurii Borodin, Director of Pokrovsk Clinical Hospital, reported that a 93-year-old man and an 82-year-old woman injured in the russian strike on Selydove on 13 June are still in critical condition. Her condition is critical, but stable, and she is undergoing inpatient treatment.

Luhansk oblast

According to Luhansk Regional Military Administration, the enemy is putting pressure in the areas of the frontline de-occupied villages and is constantly shelling them. Specifically, 66 mortar attacks were made on Makiivka, Nevske, Stelmakhivka and Kuzemivka. The enemy used artillery in Nevske, Kuzemivka and Stelmakhivka. A multiple rocket launcher system was used in Nevske. The invaders launched seven unguided aerial missiles at Serebrianka forest. With the support of aviation, the invaders tried to advance towards Lyman, near Hrekivka, Makiivka and Nevske. The situation there remains tense. According to preliminary data, russian losses in this section of the frontline amounted to: 54 invaders, one armoured personnel carrier and an ammunition depot.

The invaders opened a “post office” in the building of the post office in Bilovodsk. They offer to buy industrial, household and consumer goods, such as soap and laundry detergent.

They promise to introduce such outlets in other towns and villages of the so-called “lpr” over time.

In Sievierodonetsk, they do not start rebuilding destroyed housing. Instead, they carry out demonstration repairs in apartment buildings that have suffered minor damage. For instance, they have been standing with a broken roof for two years. Contractors coming from russia occupy empty apartments in each building at their own will. Upon completion of the work, they take everything they like and relocate to another site.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

The State Emergency Service reported that on 16 June, bomb disposal experts responded the calls from settlements in Kyiv oblast four times to safely dispose of shells, namely: 

In the village of Lubianka, Bucha region, a man was mowing the grass and noticed a 40mm grenade launcher shot on the ground. 

In the village of Skybyn, sappers took away a 76mm artillery shell for disposal, which the owners found while working in their garden. 

In the village of Novi Petrivtsi, Vyshhorod region, the fragment of an X-101 missile launched by russia was removed. 

In Irpin, local utility workers came across a 152mm artillery shell while digging a trench.

On 16 June, Ukrainian Women’s Guard held a BLS first aid training course in Kyiv at the Obolon Vcentri HUB. The course included a series of theoretical sessions and a practical part using technical equipment (mannequin, Ambu bag, mock bullet wound, turnstiles, etc.). The next tactical medicine training, where participants will learn how to provide first aid in a war situation, will take place on 23 June.

The RMA reported on the creation of hubs for adults in vocational education institutions in Kyiv oblast. Oblast residents will be able to obtain a working qualification in vocational education institutions on a course basis within 3-6 months, depending on the complexity of the profession and the level of educational qualification.

The Go to the Future charity race took place in Kyiv on Sunday. The goal of the event is to unite people to express gratitude to the military and draw public attention to the issue of integrating people with prostheses into normal life. The funds raised will be used to provide prosthetics for the military. Among the other participants were servicemen with prostheses.

According to the city council, Bucha hosted the Bucha Run 2024 charity race to raise funds for the purchase of unmanned aerial vehicles for the soldiers of the 47th Separate Mechanised Brigade Magura. The fundraiser was part of the Bucha Drone 2.0 campaign.

In the capital’s Peremoha Park, landscapers created a floral installation on the theme of F16 aircraft to be delivered by international partners to the Ukrainian Air Force. The composition was called Wings of Hope.

Zhytomyr oblast

Malyn City Council informed that over the past year, residents of Malyn community have submitted 181 applications through Diia for compensation for damaged property and 30 for property destroyed as a result of the hostilities. More than 80% of applicants have already received funds under the yeVidnovlennia programme. According to the applications, an on-site inspection of the destroyed or damaged housing is carried out. 

Sumy oblast

Sumy Regional Military Administration reported that at night, russians shelled Yunakivka community. Five mortar explosions were recorded. 

The RMA reported that during the previous day, 16 June, the russian military shelled the territory of Sumy oblast five times. A total of 35 explosions were recorded on the territory of 4 communities.The enemy shelled Velyka Pysarivka community from the territory of the russian Federation with helicopter gunships using unguided aerial missiles (16 explosions). Also russian troops shelled the territory of Yunakivka community with cannon artillery (2 explosions), 7 mines were dropped on the territory of Znob-Novhorodske community, and artillery shelling was recorded in Krasnopillia community (10 explosions).

As a result of russian attacks in Yunakivka on 16 June, a shop, a private house, a summer kitchen and an outbuilding were damaged. According to Sumy police, the russian army shelled a total of 12 settlements over the past 24 hours. 

According to the RMA, representatives of Sumy Regional Military Administration took part in a conference on the restoration of Ukraine in Berlin. Participants from Sumy oblast presented two investment projects at the conference. These are healthcare and housing and communal services projects worth €7m and €36.5m respectively. 

Chernihiv oblast

The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine reported that over the past day, russian troops attacked four border communities in Chernihiv oblast. A total of 70 attacks were recorded using mortars, cannon artillery and explosive devices dropped from UAVs. Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka, Snovsk and Horodnia communities were under enemy attack.

Viacheslav Chaus, Head of the RMA, informed that over the past week, the enemy fired 35 times at 15 settlements in Chernihiv oblast. A total of 213 explosions were recorded during this period, including 4 air strikes.

The department of education, culture, youth and sports of the village council reported that over the past two months, educational and cultural institutions of Sosnytsia community raised UAH 322,000 at charity fairs and concerts. The funds were used for the needs of community residents serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

In the evening, the enemy attacked Nikopol with two kamikaze drones. An unused building was damaged. In the morning, the occupiers attacked Pokrovsk community of Nikopol region. They dropped ammunition from a drone and launched a kamikaze drone. Two private houses, an outbuilding, a car and a power line were damaged. Yesterday’s attacks on Marhanets community damaged a private house, an outbuilding, a car and a power line.

Three women of 44, 71 and 86 years old were injured in Nikopol as a result of enemy shelling. They were provided with medical aid. In total, there were about a dozen attacks in the region during the day. The region’s centre and Marhanets community were shelled. Ammunition was dropped from UAVs, kamikaze drones were launched and artillery was fired. Businesses, 12 private houses, 4 outbuildings, trucks and cars, and a power line were damaged.

Support for the Defense Forces has increased by UAH 210m. This decision was approved by the deputies at a meeting of the Law Enforcement Committee of the Dnipro Regional Council. The budget for 2024 includes UAH 958.5m to support the Defense Forces. The funds will be used to help the military, purchase a fire truck, protect critical infrastructure and prepare the population for national resistance.

Vinnytsia oblast

Vinnytsia Mayor Serhii Morhunov reported that another delivery was made to the soldiers defending Ukraine in the east. Vinnytsia City Council, together with the community and the team of the Interregional Humanitarian Coordination Center, responded to a request from a military brigade and prepared a Dji Mavic 3T quadcopter and LED flashlights for the front. 

Kirovohrad oblast

Andrii Raikovych, Head of the RMA, reported that the 25th recruitment centre in Ukraine was opened in Kirovograd oblast. The regional centre became a participant in the current project of the Ministry of Defense to organise such centres on the basis of ASCs. 

Poltava oblast

Filip Pronin, Head of the RMA, reported that the russian army attacked civilian infrastructure in Poltava oblast , with 12 injured, including two children and 3 people 

 hospitalised. 53,000 consumers were left without electricity. 2,400 legal consumers are also without electricity. Emergency crews are already working to eliminate the consequences. 

 

Poltava plans to approve the placement of six memorial plaques in honour of Ukraine’s defenders, Maksym Zapichnyi, Andrii Kovalenko, Oleksandr Dryha, Vladyslav Fedorchenko, Andrii Bezpalko and Maksym Korostel.

Cherkasy oblast

Over 5 months of this year, Cherkasy oblast taxpayers have paid UAH 4.3m in military tax. This is the contribution of every officially employed Ukrainian to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Yesterday, the occupiers launched 347 attacks on Zaporizhzhia oblast. The enemy launched an airstrike on Charivne. 169 UAVs of various modifications attacked Huliaipole, Levadne, Robotyne, Mala Tokmachka, Malynivka and Novoandriivka. Five MLRS attacks covered Robotyne, Mala Tokmachka, and Novoandriivka. 172 artillery strikes were launched on the territory of Huliaipole, Mala Tokmachka, Novoandriivka, Robotyne, Levadne, Malynivka and Varvarivka. Three reports of housing destruction were received.

According to the General Staff, the aggressor tried to displace Ukrainian soldiers from their positions in the areas of Robotyne and Mala Tokmachka towards Orikhiv. These attacks were unsuccessful.

Invincibility Centres in Zaporizhzhia oblast resume their operations in case of a blackout or absence of electricity for more than four hours. Currently, according to  Ivan Fedorov, Head of Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, they are in “standby” mode. In total, there are over 430 centres functioning in the oblast. They are set up on premises of utility companies and State Emergency Service. They have all the necessary amenities: generators, water, mobile communication, internet, charging stations for mobile devices, rest areas, mother and child rooms and medical stations.

Mykolaiv oblast

Today, the russian army struck Voznesensk region. The missile hit outside the settlement. Preliminary reports indicate no casualties or damage.

Vitalii Kim, Head of Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, provided an update on the results of cooperation with international partners. Among other things, a Memorandum was signed for the restoration of a school and a shelter in the village of Zelenyi Hai in Shevchenkove community, funded by the Lithuanian government. Additionally, the Prime Minister of Lower Saxony, Stephan Weil, handed over ten new Volkswagen Multivans for educational institutions in the communities of Mykolaiv oblast.

Odesa oblast

The latest Ukrainian maritime drone, the Stalker 5.0, was unveiled at the Black Sea Security Forum 2024 in Odesa. The presented maritime drone is 5 meters long and 1.2 meters wide. Depending on the equipment installed, it can be used for reconnaissance or for delivering water, food, fuel, and other cargo. The unmanned boat Stalker 5.0 is equipped with a 60-horsepower engine. Its maximum speed is 40 nautical miles per hour (approximately 74 km/h).

The Superhumans Center is expanding its reach and plans to open the second prosthetics, rehabilitation, and reconstructive surgery center in Ukraine at the beginning of 2025. This centre will be located at Odesa Medical University. This announcement was made during the International Conference on Ukraine’s Recovery (Ukraine Recovery Conference – URC2024).

Kherson oblast

Today, russian military drones attacked Osokorivka in Berislav region. One person was killed as a result of the attack.

Yesterday, the enemy shelled Kizomys, Antonivka, Shliakhove, Prydniprovske, Tokarivka, Tiahynka, Novotiahynka, Olhivka and the city of Kherson. Seven private houses, a critical infrastructure object, a gas pipeline, and a private car were damaged. Two people were injured due to russian aggression.

Kherson RMA reported that due to enemy attack on a passenger bus, the route “Kherson AS – Kizomys” temporarily ceased operations. The estimated date for restoring transport connection is 20 June.

The military defending Kherson oblast received modern radio-electronic warfare equipment. Kherson RMA handed over five more electronic warfare stations. These are multi-band systems that will allow Ukrainian soldiers to be better protected from russian drone attacks.

A safe space for children and youth leisure activities was established in the front-line Dariivka community. Thanks to the joint efforts of local authorities, residents, and non-governmental, charitable, and volunteer organisations, a sports ground was opened in a shelter. The premises were repaired and equipped with new modern gym equipment.

Throughout May, volunteers from the World Central Kitchen humanitarian mission delivered and distributed over fifteen thousand food kits and more than five thousand vegetable kits to residents of Berislav region. Assistance was provided to residents of Novovoroncovska, Nova Kakhovka, Mylove, Velyka Oleksandrivka, Beryslav, Novoraisk, Tiahynka, Novooleksandrivka, and Vysokopillia communities.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

Volyn border guards received an excavator, 3 tractors, 5 passenger cars, 2 trucks, 2 minibuses, generators, thermal imagers, a loader, Starlink satellite communication systems, drones, charging stations, televisions, motorised pumps, high-pressure washers and wood chippers thanks to benefactors, public organisations, enterprises, the RMA and the Regional Council. It was also possible to purchase the equipment with funds raised from charity events held in Volyn: football matches, auctions, etc. An excavator worth UAH 6m was bought at the expense of a subvention.

Zakarpattia oblast

The Owl’s Nest Humanitarian Aid Center provided IDPs registered in Uzhgorod with 35 packages with necessary things for children under 1 year old, 50 bags with grocery sets and 50 packages with hygiene kits. During the week, volunteers gave out clothes, shoes, bed linen and dishes (2,550 items) from the PDUM Partnerschaft Deutschland-Ukraine/Moldova e. V., Luftfahrt ohne Grenzen / Wings of Help e.V. and other benefactors.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

The RMA held a meeting with the British delegation led by Martin Harris, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to Ukraine. Supporting Ukraine was discussed.

Lviv oblast

During the week, another 157 people were evacuated to Lviv oblast. Among them are 25 people with disabilities. All of them came from the frontline areas. Volunteers of Medical and Psychological Aid, who are on duty 24/7 at Lviv’s Main Station, said that mostly IDPs needed help getting off the train (groups with limited mobility), informational and psychological help, escort and accommodation. Since the beginning of the year, about 6,000 people have arrived in Lviv oblast by evacuation trains.

As part of the Travel Therapy project, a free tour of mediaeval Lviv was held for soldiers and their relatives thanks to the regional target program for the development of tourism and resorts.

Vasyl Savka, from Strii region, received the III degree For Courage Order (posthumously). The order was presented to the soldier’s mother. The warrior was killed in the battles near Bakhmut on 16 January 2023.

Rivne oblast

The police received another report about the mining of the building of Rivne RMA and the Regional Council. According to the protocol, the workers were evacuated. Special services conducted an inspection of the premises. No explosive objects were found.

Ternopil oblast

Employees of Mykulynetsk Regional Physiotherapy Rehabilitation Hospital sent 20 FPV drones to the soldiers at their own expense. This is not the first time that medics of this hospital help the soldiers, they give them equipment, medicines and other necessary things.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Khmelnytskyi community sent 10 DJI MAVIC 3T quadcopters with a thermal imager worth almost UAH 1,8m thanks to the city budget. Since the beginning of the year, the community has sent almost 290 quadcopters of various models and more than 3,100 FPVs.

Chernivtsi oblast

To support the technical readiness of the military, Nedoboiv community allocated UAH 50,000 to the A4815 Military Unit for current expenses, in particular for the purchase of spare parts and equipment. The community also allocated UAH 220,000 to the Main Directorate of the National Police in Chernivtsi oblast for the purchase of fuel and lubricants and warranty service for official cars.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Canada announced the allocation of $38.1m to support Ukraine, about $14.5m of which will go to the restoration of the Ukrainian energy system. Over $10m will go towards supporting at-risk youth and the reintegration of children abducted by russia, improving access to justice for victims of war crimes, raising family and community awareness of the missing persons process, and supporting male survivors of wartime sexual violence, including prisoners of war.

Jonas Gar Stere Prime Minister of Norway, announced that the government will provide Ukraine with about $74m to help repair the energy infrastructure. It has already been decided that 120m kroner will go to repair the power industry in Kharkiv. Solar batteries will be installed in 7 maternity wards and operating theatres in Kharkiv oblast.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania announced that the delegation of russia and belarus will not be allowed to participate in the annual session of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, which will be held in Romania from 29 June to 3 July.

The Lithuanian Ministry of Defense reported that Lithuania will send 14 M113 armoured personnel carriers to Ukraine.

The US announced a new powerful package of sanctions against russia. 300 individuals and legal entities from russia, China, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Turkey, the UAE and the US were included in the new sanctions list.

The letter to the EU High Representative for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, stated that 8 ministers of foreign affairs of EU countries called to ban russian diplomats from free movement in the European Union.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, met with Nana Akufo-Addo, Ghanaian President. They discussed the next steps regarding the implementation of the Peace Formula.

In Munich, before Ukraine’s match at Euro-2024, a part of the stadium tribune from Kharkiv, damaged by russian missiles, was installed. It is noted that russian troops shelled the Soniachnyi stadium in Kharkiv on 20 May, 2022, as a result of which the stands were destroyed. Rockets also hit the football field.
