War in Ukraine today: latest news, 15 July, 2024 (photo)

It has been the 873th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

The situation in the combat areas and on the frontline is tense, however, the Defence Forces of Ukraine are doing everything possible to prevent the enemy’s plans from being implemented and to destroy their personnel and equipment.

A total of 69 combat engagements have taken place since the beginning of the day.

The border areas of Sumy and Chernihiv oblasts are under systematic fire from enemy artillery and MRLs. A number of border settlements, such as Pokrovka, Popivka, Uhroidy, Luhivka and Novomykolaivka, have suffered from enemy terrorist attacks. The enemy also conducts sabotage and reconnaissance activities.  

At the same time, Kharkiv oblast is under constant attack from enemy aircraft.  Terrorists have downed 17 UAVs today. They targeted Hlyboke, Lнptsi, Vesele, Vetarynarne and Vovchansk.

In addition, towards Kharkiv, russian invaders attempted ten times to storm the defensive lines of Ukrainian troops in the areas of Hlyboke and Vovchansk. Six combat engagements are currently taking place near Vovchansk. The situation is under control of our troops.

Towards Kupiansk, the enemy twice actively attacked the positions of our units near Stelmakhivka and the fighting is still ongoing.  Ukrainian soldiers continue to hold steadfastly the defence.

Today, towards Lyman, the invading army, supported by aviation, launched three attacks on Ukrainian positions near Makiivka and Terny. Two of the engagements ended without success for the enemy, and one is ongoing.

Towards SIversk, the enemy is also active. Ukrainian defenders repelled two attacks near Rozdolivka, Bilohorivka and Verkhnokamianske, and four more attempts by the enemy were unsuccessful. The situation is under control.

Towards Kramatorsk, the invaders made five assaults on our troops’ positions near Chasiv Yar and Hryhorivka. Two attacks are still ongoing. The enemy attacked Chasiv Yar with attack aircraft.   

Towards Toretsk, the number of enemy attacks increased to nine. The enemy is concentrating its efforts near Pivnichne and Niu-York. Ukrainian troops repelled four enemy attacks, five more combat engagements are ongoing. The invaders are actively using aviation in this area, in particular, near Pivnichne, Toretsk and Niu-York were bombed, the enemy dropped 12 UAVs and used unguided aerial missiles.

Towards Pokrovsk, the largest number of firefights took place.  Since the beginning of the day, the occupants, supported by bomber and attack aircraft, have made sixteen attempts to push our defenders from their positions in the areas of Progress, Novoselivka Persha, Novooleksandrivka and Yasnobrodivka. The defence forces are holding back the attack and have repelled 13 enemy attacks so far, with three attacks still ongoing. The enemy’s losses are being clarified.

Towards Kurakhove, fighting continues near Krasnohorivka, Karlivka and Paraskoviivka. According to updated information, ten attacks by the occupying army have been repelled in the area so far today.

Towards Vremivka, Ukrainian troops repelled four enemy attacks near Kostiantynivka, Vodiane and Makarivka.

Towards Orikhiv, the invaders made two unsuccessful attempts to attack our units near Mala Tokmachka and in the direction of Novoandriivka.

Towards Kherson, the enemy continues to try to drive our units from their positions. Two unsuccessful assaults by enemy infantry were repelled by Ukrainian troops.

Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets reported that Ukraine is planning a large exchange of female prisoners of war with russia. There are currently more than 400 women in captivity.

Ukrainian photographers presented the Krynky film about a village in Kherson oblast and the heroic resistance of Ukrainian defenders. The film was shot by Konstiantyn and Vlada Liberov in a village that has only a name and a place on the map.  This is an important and absolutely unique story about one of the most brutal sections of the Ukrainian frontline. Collapsed logistics, almost no evacuations, 60-70 KAB bombs a day and it is incredibly difficult to fight there, and the people who hold this bridgehead are real heroes. This film is a true story about them.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

The General Staff reported that Ukrainian troops repelled 97 russian attacks on the eastern front yesterday. The russian army remains the most active towards Pokrovsk and Toretsk. The invaders attacked there 41 and 20 times respectively over the day.

Kharkiv oblast

As of 4pm, russia had dropped 17 KAB bombs in Kharkiv oblast. According to the General Staff, they were aimed Hlyboke, Lyptsi, Vesele, Vetarynarne and Vovchansk.

Towards Kharkiv, russian invaders attempted ten times to storm the defensive lines of Ukrainian troops near Hlyboke and Vovchansk. Six combat engagements are ongoing near Vovchansk.

Towards Kupiansk, russia twice actively attacked the positions of Ukrainian troops near Stelmakhivka and the fighting is still ongoing.

Oleh Syniehubov, Head of the RMA, reported that yesterday at 8:30pm, russians attacked Kupiansk. The asphalt pavement was damaged as a result of enemy shelling with an FPV drone.

 At 5:30pm, russians attacked Zolochiv of Zolochiv community, Bohodukhiv region. A strike by a Lancet FPV drone on the territory on the T21-03 Zolochiv-Oleksandrivka highway.

At 4:48pm, russians attacked Bohuslavka village of Borova community, Izium region.  As a result of the shelling by the KAB, 3 outbuildings were burning and a 21-year-old man was injured.

At 4:45pm, russians attacked near the Track mechanical station, Kupiansk forestry, Kivsharivka village, Kupiansk region. As a result of the shelling, the forest litter was burning. The roof of a two-storey building was destroyed, windows and doors were damaged,and a 53-year-old woman was injured.

At 12pm, russians attacked Kruhliakivka village, Kupiansk region. The shelling destroyed an apartment.

As a result of the explosion of a technical device at 9:31am, a 42-year-old man was killed in Kupiansk.

 Towards Kharkiv, the invaders unsuccessfully attacked our positions three times near Hlyboke and Vovchansk. According to Yurii Povkh, Spokesman of the Kharkiv operational-tactical group, russia is creating new assault groups in this area consisting of the 153rd Motorised Rifle Regiment of the 47th Motorised Rifle Division and the 138th Separate Brigade of the Sixth Army. According to him, the invaders attacked using 33 KABs, 32 kamikaze drones and made 466 attacks yesterday.

Towards Kupiansk, the enemy was repelled three times near Pishchane and Stelmakhivka, suffering losses.

The press service of the city council quoted Mayor Terekhov as saying that the cogeneration units should be delivered to Kharkiv by 20 September. The delivery of the specialised equipment ordered by the city is an urgent need.

Yevhen Vasylenko, Spokesman of the State Emergency Service of Kharkiv oblast, informed that since the start of the full-scale war, eight employees of Kharkiv’s State Emergency Service have been killed. In almost all cases, it happened when the rescuers were working at the sites of shelling and russia was striking again.

During the week of 8-14 July, at least eight residents of Kharkiv oblast were killed by russian shelling and another person injured by an unidentified object. Another 56 people were injured as a result of shelling or explosions from unexploded ordnance. Information about those injured or killed in the hostilities was reported by official sources in regional or local administrations, law enforcers and the State Emergency Service.

Donetsk oblast

Vadym Filashkin, Head of Donetsk Regional Military Administration, said that russian troops dropped two 250kg bombs on the town of Lyman. Five people aged 27 to 50 were injured. Three shops, an infrastructure facility and a private house were damaged.

According to the mayor’s councillor Andriushchenko, two explosions occurred in the temporarily occupied Mariupol. Also russian air defence systems were operating before the explosions, but after it, aircraft and helicopters patrolled the city.

The press service of Donetsk police reported that the enemy shelled Donetsk oblast 3,380 times yesterday, killing a civilian and injuring 11 residents.

The russian army shelled 8 settlements: Zalizne, Lyman, Myrnohrad, Bohoiavlenka, Hnativka, Zakitne, Marynivka and Mykhailivka.

37 civilian objects were damaged, including 19 residential buildings, administrative buildings, a cafe, a shop, an educational institution, outbuildings and cars.

The russians dropped two UMPB D-30SN guided bombs on Myrnohrad, hitting a five-storey building and an educational institution. At least one person was killed and 7 others injured. According to preliminary information, two people are under the rubble. 8 apartment buildings were damaged.

The invaders attacked Lyman with four ODAB-500 aerial bombs from the UMPC, injuring three civilians. Four houses, two administrative buildings, a cafe, a shop, 7 outbuildings and a car were damaged.

One more resident was injured in Zalizne.

In Hnativka, 6 private houses were shelled. A house was destroyed by a mortar attack in Zakitne.

Luhansk oblast

According to Luhansk Regional Military Administration, the invaders shelled Nevske at about 11am. They used artillery and FPV drones. A house was completely destroyed.

The russians attacked Makiivka by cannon, rocket artillery and drones. In total, the aggressor launched about 20 unguided aerial missiles there. Another number were fired at Serebrianka forest.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine repelled enemy attacks near Stelmakhivka, Hrekivka, Makiivka and Bilohorivka.

In Rubizhne, in the middle of spring, they dismantled the roof of another apartment building and left the site. The contractor is not responsible for such actions of the mercenaries. In many apartments, homeowners had to repair the consequences of the rainfall at their own expense.

In Bilokurakyne, Novopskov and Markivka, the occupation authorities, instead of opening modern specialised shops, are implementing Soviet practice, bringing industrial, domestic and household goods to post offices for sale. A month ago, this pilot project was tested in Bilovodsk and decided to be expanded.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

According to Kyiv City Military Administration, since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Kyiv, 201 civilians have been killed, including 10 children. Sixty-eight people were injured, including 106 children.

As a result of the russian missile attack on the capital on 8 July, 33 people remain hospitalised in Kyiv. Three of the hospitalised are in serious condition. There are also 5 children among the injured. As a reminder, 33 people were killed and 121 were injured in the terrorist missile attack. In the capital, 129 buildings were damaged.

The hospital’s CEO, Volodymyr Zhovnir announced that the Okhmatdyt Children’s Hospital is gradually resuming operations in Kyiv. Fifty young patients have already returned to the oncology department. The Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit of the hospital has been launched at Kyiv City Centre for Nephrology and Dialysis. Earlier, the Blood Centre and Radiology Department resumed their work.

In Kyiv, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy gave an unannounced press conference following the NATO summit. The event was planned for Ukrainian and foreign media in Washington, but was not held there due to the tight schedule.

Kyiv Regional Military Administration reported that in Irpin, a multi-storey building on Kotliarevskoho Street, damaged as a result of hostilities, is being overhauled. Windows, door and balcony structures were smashed in the apartment building, and the facade and roof needed major repairs. Currently, specialists are completing the insulation and finishing of the building’s facade.

Mayor Oleksandr Markushyn announced that a memorial grove in commemoration of the children killed by the  russian military was planted in Irpin. As of 15 July, 561 children have been killed in Ukraine as a result of the armed aggression of the russian army, and more than 1,462 children have been injured of varying severity. In Kyiv oblast, 131 children were injured.

Kyiv City State Administration also reported that in Kyiv, ASCs have engaged the maximum number of administrators due to the increase in appeals from persons liable for military service. On 16 July, the deadline for updating the data of persons liable for military service expires, which has led to a significant increase in the number of applications.

The Department of Public Communications of Kyiv City State Administration announced that the IV Volunteer Forum “Unite for Victory” was held in the capital, which has become a traditional event for uniting volunteers, sharing experiences and ideas among civic activists. The Trade Union Building, where the forum was held, brought together nearly 400 participants who helped the military, the wounded, and veterans.

Zhytomyr oblast

Zhytomyr City Council reported that in Zhytomyr, on 15 July, trams and trolleybuses were temporarily suspended in some streets due to a power outage. Due to the lack of electricity, traffic lights did not work in some parts of the city.

In St Michael’s Cathedral in Zhytomyr, a funeral service was held for 23-year-old Yevhen Vasylenko, who died on 7 July while performing a combat mission. Yevhen volunteered to defend Ukraine from the first months of russia’s full-scale invasion. He was awarded the Participant in Combat Operations decoration. 

Sumy oblast

At night and in the morning of 15 July, russians fired 7 times at the border areas of Sumy oblast. A total of 20 explosions were recorded – artillery and mortar attacks, an FPV drone strike, and the dropping of explosive devices from a UAV. According to the RMA, Khotyn, Krasnopillia, Esman and Druzhba communities were shelled.

On 14 July, the russian military fired 17 times in Sumy oblast. A total of 90 explosions were recorded. The regional military administration reported that seven border communities were shelled.

The enemy fired artillery (20 explosions), MLRS (19 explosions), mortars (3 explosions), launched 6 NAR missiles from an aircraft (6 explosions), and dropped explosive devices from a UAV (2 explosions) at Yunakivka community.

The russians dropped 4 mines on the territory of Esman community.

The enemy fired mortars at Druzhba community (14 explosions). Also, one mortar explosion was heard on the territory of Znob-Novhorodske community.

Bilopillia community: FPV drone strikes (3 explosions), LNG shelling (2 explosions), and MLRS shelling (10 explosions) were recorded.

Seredyna-Buda community was hit by an FPV drone.

Krasnopillia community came under artillery fire (4 explosions). The enemy also dropped 3 explosive devices from a UAV on its territory.

The mayor Yurii Zarko informed that on 14 July, three people were wounded as a result of shelling of Bilopillya with Grad by the russian military. The shelling targeted mostly residential buildings – a school building was damaged, a bakery burned to the ground, and power lines were damaged.

The regional State Emergency Service reported that over the past day, rescuers extinguished five fires caused by russian shelling in Sumy oblast. Hostile attacks led to fires at various addresses in the residential sector where civilians live.

The regional military administration announced that on 14 July, the regional air defence forces destroyed a russian cruise missile in the sky over Sumy oblast.

Over the past week, bomb squads in Sumy oblast destroyed 332 pieces of ammunition found in Sumy, Okhtyrka, Konotop and Shostka districts. According to the SES, since the beginning of the year, 719 explosive devices have been found in oblast.

Mykola Zaritskyi, captain of Sumy Defence team, stressed that Sumy residents won eight medals at the Kyiv the Unbreakable competition among wounded Armed Forces veterans. The competition took place on 3-14 July in Kyiv.

Chernihiv oblast

Over the past 24 hours, russian troops attacked the border of Chernihiv oblast with FPV drones, mortars and cannon artillery. According to the State Border Guard Service, a total of 41 explosions were recorded. Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka and Snovsk communities were under enemy fire.

Viacheslav Chaus, Head of the RMA, informed that over the past week, the enemy fired 38 times at 17 settlements in Chernihiv oblast. During this period, 177 explosions were recorded. The enemy carried out 12 air strikes using FPV drones.

The North operational command reported that there are currently no accumulations of russian troops on the border of Chernihiv and Sumy oblasts. The operational situation is tense, but controlled by the defence forces. The enemy is sticking to the same tactics: shelling settlements on the border and inland, and actively using sabotage and reconnaissance groups.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

The enemy continued to attack Nikopol region in the evening and at night. The regional centre and Marhanets community were shelled by artillery and kamikaze drones. Two private houses, a petrol station, a garage and a power line were damaged. There were no casualties.

Throughout the day, the invaders were shelling Nikopol region by artillery and kamikaze drones. They targeted the regional centre, Pokrovsk and Marhanets communities. An enterprise was damaged, a house and an outbuilding caught fire, an apartment building, 10 private houses, 4 outbuildings, 3 cars, a truck, a garage and power lines were damaged. There were no casualties.

Vinnytsia oblast

The decision to send aid to 18 military units was made during a meeting of the executive committee of the city council. This includes FPV attack drones, DJI MAVIC 3T quadcopters and thermal imaging sights.

Kirovohrad oblast

According to the Decree of the President of Ukraine, Serhii Pavychych from Novoukrainka community was posthumously awarded the Order For Courage of the III degree and the Cross of the Special Operations Forces in accordance with the Decree of the Minister of Defence of Ukraine Rustem Umerov. The award was presented to the mother of the fallen soldier. Serhii was defending Ukraine towards Zaporizhzhia. In one of the battles on 4 December near Malynivka village, he received life-threatening injuries.

Poltava oblast

A 25-year-old soldier Ivan Chornyi with the call sign Berlin received the Order of the Golden Star from the President. In October 2023, the native of Kotelva community single-handedly destroyed the entire enemy airborne group.

Cherkasy oblast

Mariia Korolchuk received her passport from the President of Ukraine. It was symbolic on the Day of Ukrainian Statehood. Mariia and her family now live in Cherkasy oblast. the family of a border guard hero, who was killed while performing a combat mission, are originally from Luhansk oblast.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Yesterday, the occupiers carried out 455 attacks on 8 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast. A total of 187 UAVs of various modifications attacked Bilenke, Huliaipole, Mala Tokmachka, Levadne, Robotyne, Novodanylivka, Malynivka and Novoandriivka. There were 15 MLRS shellings covering Novodanylivka and Robotyne. Additionally, there were 253 artillery strikes at Huliaipole, Mala Tokmachka, Novoandriivka, Robotyne, Novodanylivka, Malynivka and Levadne. Seven reports were received about the destruction of residential buildings and infrastructure.

It is reported that the occupiers made two unsuccessful attempts to attack our units near Mala Tokmachka and towards Novoandriivka. Soldiers of the 4th Separate Unit of the Special Operations Center “Omega” of the National Guard of Ukraine destroyed a russian communication antenna using an FPV drone.

The memory of defenders who gave their lives for Ukraine was honoured in Zaporizhzhia on the occasion of Ukrainian Statehood Day. Flowers were laid at the monument to the defenders of Ukraine on the Alley of Defenders. The fallen were also commemorated with a minute of silence.

Today, 15 July, a sensory prism dedicated to fallen soldiers was installed on the Alley of Heroes in Zaporizhzhia. The electronic prism contains information about 128 defenders of the region. Additionally, 330 applications have been submitted for placing information about other fallen soldiers.

Mykolaiv oblast

On the morning of 15 July, the russian army launched a missile strike on Mykolaiv oblast, causing a fire in one of the regions. As a result of the attack, dry grass caught on fire.

Yesterday, 14 July, the enemy attacked Kutsurub community with FPV kamikaze drones, resulting in two fires of dry grass outside the settlements, which were quickly extinguished by firefighters. In the evening of 14 July, the enemy shelled the city of Ochakiv with artillery, damaging private houses, a garage, and a power line. Additionally, a dry grass fire occurred, which was promptly extinguished.

On the occasion of Ukrainian Statehood Day, a ceremonial raising of the State Flag of Ukraine took place in Mykolaiv. Local authorities also honoured those who died fighting for the freedom and independence of Ukraine, as well as participants in the Revolution of Dignity with a minute of silence and laying flowers to the Heavenly Hundred sign and the temporary memorial near the destroyed regional state administration building.

Odesa oblast

As of 6:30 a.m. on 15 July, there are no enemy ships in the Black Sea. Three enemy ships are in the Sea of Azov, and one enemy ship is in the Mediterranean Sea.

Tonight, russian occupation forces attacked Odesa oblast with a ballistic missile, likely an Iskander-M, launched from the temporarily occupied Crimea. The consequences of the attack have not yet been reported by the Southern Defense Forces and Odesa Regional Military Administration.

Kherson oblast

This morning, russian forces attacked Kherson oblast. The occupiers shelled a residential house in the village of Sadove, injuring a 70-year-old woman who suffered an explosive injury and a leg wound. Later, a 43-year-old man sought medical help for an explosive injury. Additionally, the enemy struck a civilian car in Kizomys with a drone, severely injuring a 71-year-old local resident who was diagnosed with an explosive injury and a head wound.

Today, the russian army shelled Veletenske in Bilozerka community. A 74-year-old local woman was injured by an explosive injury and a shrapnel wound to her chest while in her yard.

In total, 10 people, including a rescuer, were injured in Kherson oblast due to russian shelling. Yesterday, the russian army shelled 19 settlements: Kherson, Bilozerka, Sadove, Prydniprovske, Chornobaivka, Antonivka, Dniprovske, Dariivka, Kizomys, Stanislav, Sofiivka, Mykilske, Beryslav, Lvove, Novovorontsovka, Zmiivka, Chervonyi Maiak, Kostyrka and Mykhailivka. The shelling damaged 23 private houses, two apartment buildings, a medical facility, an administrative building, two cars and gas pipelines.

Police evacuated a 72-year-old resident of Beryslav from under enemy attack. They arrived at the address in a special vehicle and quickly, with maximum safety measures, transported the immobile woman to a safe area where she was handed over to medics and volunteers.

Single Veteran’s Window was opened in Borozenka and Tiahynka communities. Specialists at local administrative service centres will provide more than 40 administrative services to military personnel and their families related to their status.

American volunteer doctors from the Global Care Force organisation held consultations for residents of Kalynivka community. Over two days, the doctors examined about 170 people. In addition to comprehensive care, patients were able to receive necessary medications for 2-3 months free of charge.

An event dedicated to Ukrainian Statehood Day titled “Ukrainian Statehood Day: Origins, History, and Present” was held at the Kherson Regional Library for Youth. Families raising children with mental disabilities and other interested residents of Kherson participated in the event.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

An evacuation train from Donetsk oblast with 43 people, including 7 children and 7 people with disabilities, arrived in Volyn oblast. Upon arrival, the forcibly evacuated persons received the necessary assistance, primarily psychological and medical. People were transported by bus and placed in Kovel region.

Zakarpattia oblast

10 children from families of fallen Heroes and participants in hostilities went on holiday to Hungary. During the week, they will be in Niredgaz at a summer camp, where a rich program has been prepared for them, as well as children from Ivano-Frankivsk and Berehove.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Junior sergeant Peter Fedorchuk from Verkhovyn region was awarded with the title of Hero of Ukraine with the Golden Star order. Peter served in the 36th Marine Brigade named after Rear Admiral Bilinsky in Mykolaiv. For his selfless service, he was awarded Defender of the Fatherland, Cossack Cross, and the III degree For Courage Orden. The soldier was posthumously awarded the Knight of the Battle Rank and For Merit to Prykarpattia medals. The hero was killed in April 2022 during the defence of Mariupol.

Lviv oblast

Lviv City Council held a meeting with Pavlo Vizdal, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Slovak Republic to Ukraine. They discussed cooperation.

Last week, Lviv oblast received almost 250 people from frontline territories and IDPs returning from abroad. People were met by volunteers of Medical and Psychological Assistance. The most common requests for help are psychological consultations, informational support and accompaniment. In addition, the settlement of older people and persons with disabilities.

Myroslav Hladkyi, defender from Yavoriv region received the honorary badge Cross of the Brave (posthumously). The fallen soldier was serving in the Engineer and Sapper Platoon of the 214th Special Battalion OPFOR. He was killed on 5 January, 2024 near the settlement of Bohdanivka, Bakhmut region, Donetsk oblast.

Rivne oblast

34 new businesses opened in the oblast as part of the Grant For Veterans And Their Spouses program. Since the beginning of its implementation, the state has financed 26 projects from residents of the oblast in the amount of UAH 12.2m. Their implementation made it possible to create 16 new jobs.

Ternopil oblast

A traditional All-Ukrainian funeral was held at the Maria Spiritual Center Zarvanytsia. Thousands of believers from all over Ukraine gathered in Ternopil oblast to pray together for the end of the war and the victory of Ukraine. After the end of the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy, bishops of the Synod of Bishops of the UGCC consecrated 5 cars, which they sent to defenders.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Khmelnytskyi community sent 10 DJI MAVIC 3T Thermal quadcopters worth UAH 1.6m to the military thanks to budget funds.
