What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 4 pm:   

The situation on the front line remains difficult. The Ukrainian Defense Forces are aiming to disrupt the offensive plans of the russian aggressor and destroy its personnel and equipment.

On 15 December, there were 152 combat clashes. The largest number of battles were recorded towards Siversk, Kurakhove, Pokrovsk and Vremivka.

Communities in Sumy and Chernihiv oblasts suffered from enemy artillery and mortar fire, including Bleshnia, Porozok and Slavhorod.

Towards Kharkiv, the enemy is trying to put pressure on Ukrainian units near Vysoka Yaruha, in Vovchansk and Tykhe, in total, the enemy stormed the positions of Ukrainian units nine times, one battle is ongoing. Baranivka and Shopyne were hit by KAB airstrikes.

Towards Kupiansk, the enemy stormed the positions of Ukrainian units in the vicinity of Zahryzove and Lozova four times. Three clashes are still ongoing. Ukrainian soldiers continue to hold their defenses steadfastly.

Towards Lyman, the invading army carried out seven attacks on Ukrainian positions near Novoiehorivka, Hrekivka, Terny, Tverdokhlibove and Nadiia. One clash is ongoing.

Towards Siversk, units of the Defense Forces repelled ten attacks by russian invaders, 14 clashes are currently ongoing. The enemy is attacking near Bilohorivka, Verkhnokamianske, Ivano-Dariivka and Viimka. Siversk came under enemy air strikes.

Towards Kramatorsk, the invaders attacked three times in the vicinity of Chasiv Yar and Stupochok.

Towards Toretsk, seven enemy attacks took place near Toretsk and Shcherbinivka. Ukrainian soldiers repelled two of them, fighting continues, the enemy is also actively using bomber aircraft, and the settlement of Krymske came under attack.

Towards Pokrovsk, the invaders made 20 attempts to push Ukrainian defenders out of the occupied positions in the vicinity of Myroliubivka, Promin, Lysivka, Dachenske, Zelene, Pishchane and Novoolenivka. The defense forces are holding back the onslaught and repelled 13 enemy attacks, seven clashes are still ongoing. The enemy fired unguided missiles at Oleksandropol and dropped air bombs on Mykolaivka.

Towards Kurakhove, the invaders attacked 23 times near Stari Terny, Sontsivka, Zori, Kurakhove and Uspenivka. 15 enemy attacks were repelled. Fighting continues. The enemy bombed Bahatyr, Andriivka and Oleksiivka with GABs.

Towards Vremivka, there are 13 clashes near Kostiantynopolske, Sukhi Yaly, Rozlyv, Zelenivka, Trudove, Novyi Komar, Novosslka and Makarivka. Ukrainian soldiers repelled 12 enemy assaults.

Towards Orikhiv, the occupation forces were shelling the territory controlled by the Ukrainian government, targeting civilian infrastructure and settlements.

Towards Kherson, the enemy  unsuccessfully tried to storm our defenders twice.

The operation in Kursk oblast is ongoing. Enemy aviation and artillery continue to strike at their territory. Ukrainian soldiers repelled 11 attacks, and clashes are currently ongoing in 17 locations.

Air defense forces shot down 56 of 108 russian UAVs overnight. Another 49 were lost in the air, and three returned to russia.

Greenpeace Ukraine reports that 4,300 tons of fuel oil and possibly other petroleum products are spilling into the waters of the Kerch Strait, which connects the Black and Azov Seas, as a result of the accident of two russian tankers. This could have serious consequences.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

The press service of the operational-tactical group of troops “Kharkiv” reported that the Defense Forces captured eight russians towards Kharkiv. In addition, the russian army lost 105 soldiers killed and wounded in this direction.

Volodymyr Degtyarev, representative of the brigade’s public relations service, informs that since May 2024, the russian army has lost approximately 1,500 soldiers in Kharkiv oblast.

Oleg Synegubov, Head of the RMA, reported that in the morning, there was a hostile hit in Kyivskyi district of Kharkiv The occupiers hit the ground, the glazing of a residential building was damaged. A 48-year-old woman was hospitalized in a medical institution. According to the preliminary version, russians used an Iskander-M ballistic missile with a penetrating warhead on a sports complex in Kyivskyi district of Kharkiv, the regional prosecutor’s office reported. A crater with a diameter of 20 meters and a depth of approximately 6 meters appeared at the impact site.

At 10:52, the enemy also struck Barvinkivka community. Hits were recorded in the villages of Pytomnyk and Ruska Lozova, Kharkiv region. In the city of Kupiansk, a private house was damaged as a result of the enemy strike, there were no casualties.

 

On December 15, at 00:05, the village of Baranivka, Bohodukhiv region was shelled. KAB shelling was on an open area near the village of Karasivka.

 

The day before, at 17:23, the village of Borova and Borova community, Izyum region were shelled. As a result of the shelling, a private house and an outbuilding were damaged.

 

At 13:20, as a result of artillery shelling in Kupiansk, a non-residential building was damaged.

 

Using bomber and assault aircraft towards Kharkiv, the enemy attacked in the vicinity of ​​the settlement of Vovchansk.

 

According to updated information, towards Kupiansk, the invaders carried out three attacks during the day. The defense forces stopped all enemy assault actions near Lozova.

 

Donetsk oblast

Siversk, Pokrovsk, Kurakhove directions are where the invaders stormed and attacked the most in the past day. According to the General Staff on the morning of December 15, more than half of all battles over the past day were recorded on these three sections of the front. The Ukrainian military repelled 55 assaults and attacks from Siversk, 52 assaults towards Pokrovsk, in particular near ​​Dachenske, Pishchane, Shevchenko, 50 attacks were repelled by the Defense Forces towards Kurakhove, in particular in the vicinity of ​​Stari Terny, Yelizavetivka, Hannivka and Uspenivka, in the city of Kurakhove itself.

 

In total, there were 292 combat clashes over the past day along the entire front line.

 

The Khortytsia military unit reported that the russian army, despite attempts to improve its position and attack the southeastern outskirts of Pishchane towards Pokrovsk, retreated with losses.

 

Fighting in Donetsk oblast continues on the outskirts and in the urban area of ​​Kurakhove, in Chasiv Yar. The Defense Forces are also repelling attacks in the south – in the vicinity of ​​Blahodatne, Novotroitske, Rozdolne.

Pokrovsk region. In Kurakhove and nearby villages, numerous high-rise buildings and private houses were damaged. In Pokrovsk, a house was damaged.

 

Kramatorsk region. In Lyman, a high-rise building and an administrative building were damaged. In Druzhkivka, 7 high-rise buildings and a private house were damaged. In Nova Poltavka, Illinivka community, 6 objects were damaged.

 

Bakhmut region. In Chasiv Yar community, 6 private houses and a high-rise building were damaged. In Siversk, 19 private houses and a high-rise building were damaged.

 

In total, russians shelled settlements in Donetsk oblast 10 times during the day. 151 people were evacuated from the front line, including 10 children.

 

Luhansk oblast

The enemy remained active towards Lyman and increased pressure on Siversk, looking for weak spots in Ukrainian defense in Bilohorivka. They carried out assault operations near Nadiia and Makiivka. The enemy used artillery installations eight times. 70 drones were sent to fortifications of Ukrainian defenders.

 

Artem Lysohor, Head of Luhansk RMA, reports that more than 1,900 apartment buildings located in the occupied territory of Luhansk Oblast have not been serviced by utilities for years. That is, they are not on the balance sheet of any housing service or other management company. The problem arose in 2014 after the seizure of part of the oblast by russians.

 

Urgent re-registration of an apartment under russian law in the so-called “lpr” is not a panacea for the arbitrariness of the local occupation authorities. In particular, in Siverskodonetsk, housing that has been re-registered and entered into the russian register in the event of a long-term absence of the owner in the city is again, but unofficially, recognized as ownerless. russian handymen, including builders, are being settled there, along with families who have decided to move from remote regions of the russian federation. The russian security forces are leaving complaints unconsidered.

 

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

The Ukrainian Women’s Guard has signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. The document was signed in Kyiv by Olena Biletska, Head of the NGO, and Oksen Lisovyi, Minister of Education and Science. The memorandum envisages cooperation in the development of education and science in Ukraine, including mine safety training for teachers and children, as well as a number of other important initiatives and humanitarian issues.

Bila Tserkva City Council reported that Bila Tserkva community purchased and handed over 20 Toyota Hilux pickup trucks to the 72nd separate mechanised brigade named after the Black Zaporizshians.

Kyiv City State Administration reported that Kyiv communal services helped Kryvyi Rih during the heating crisis. 21 specialists of Kyivteploenergo and 6 units of special equipment were sent to Kryvyi Rih. The capital’s utility companies stayed in Kryvyi Rih for 10 days and worked for 12 hours a day. During this time, they connected 68 houses, 5 schools and 2 kindergartens to heat.

Kyiv hosted a traditional rally to commemorate prisoners of war and soldiers missing in action at the frontline. Every week, relatives and friends of the defenders, as well as concerned citizens, gather at different locations. This time, the picket took place near Dorohozhychi metro station.

Bucha Mayor Anatolii Fedoruk announced that Bucha had received humanitarian aid from its German sister city. Generators, heaters and solar panels were donated to the community by the sister city of Bergisch Gladbach.

Kyiv City State Administration reported that Kyiv proposes to remove from public space 6 more objects related to the history and culture of russia and the USSR. It is also proposed to preserve 7 separate objects, from which elements of Soviet ideology or russian symbols will be removed, adjusting the texts or compositions.

Bucha Mayor Anatoliy Fedoruk informed that a new modern outpatient clinic will appear in Babynets village in Kyiv oblast in May 2025. The outpatient clinic will be built jointly with the International Organisation for Migration. The project started in 2021 but was suspended due to russian aggression.

Zhytomyr oblast

Zhytomyr Regional Military Administration has established a Volunteer Council. It was established for the duration of martial law to ensure effective support for volunteer activities and coordinate interaction between volunteer organisations, local executive authorities and local self-government bodies. The Council includes representatives of 20 public and charitable organisations and the rector of the religious community of St Michael’s Cathedral of the AFU in Zhytomyr.

Rescuers gave a lecture on mine safety rules to the staff of pre-school No. 30 in Zhytomyr. The SES specialists provided the attendees with important information about modern models of explosive devices found in Ukraine and the danger they pose.

Sumy oblast

 Around 8:00 PM on December 14, the Russian army attacked the village of Novopostroiene in the Chupakhivka community with a drone. This was reported by the Sumy Regional Prosecutor’s Office. As a result of the strike, a fire broke out at a household, injuring a 35-year-old homeowner.

During the night and morning, Russian forces carried out three attacks on border territories and settlements in the Sumy region. A total of eight explosions were recorded. The Krasnopillia, Chupakhivka, and Seredyna-Buda communities were shelled.

Krasnopillia community: The enemy used artillery, resulting in six explosions.

Seredyna-Buda community: An FPV drone attack was recorded (one explosion). A private residential house was damaged in the attack.

On December 14, Russian forces conducted 76 attacks on border areas and settlements in the Sumy region. A total of 176 explosions were recorded. The affected communities included the Khotin, Myropillia, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Esman, Seredyna-Buda, and Svesa communities.

Krasnopillia community:

  • Artillery fire resulted in 18 explosions.
  • Mortar shelling caused six explosions.
  • FPV drone attacks led to eight explosions.
  • Shelling damaged an apartment building and an office building.
  • Four VOG explosives were dropped from drones, causing additional damage.

Seredyna-Buda community:

  • Grenade launcher fire caused 30 explosions.
  • Mortar shelling resulted in six explosions.
  • One FPV drone attack was recorded.
  • Six explosions were caused by multiple rocket launcher (MLRS) fire.
  • Administrative buildings were damaged during the attacks.

Velyka Pysarivka community:

  • Rocket strikes with “NURS” missiles caused 20 explosions.

  • Mortar shelling caused four explosions.

Svesa community:

  • FPV drone attacks caused eight explosions.
  • Artillery shelling resulted in 13 explosions.

Esman community:

  • Nine mortar shells were dropped on the community’s territory.

Khotin community:

  • Mortar fire caused six explosions.
  • Artillery fire led to 18 explosions.
  • FPV drone attacks resulted in 17 explosions.

Myropillia community:

  • A missile strike caused one explosion.

Chernihiv oblast

The Russian army continues shelling the Chernihiv region, with a total of 103 explosions recorded. The enemy persists in terrorizing border villages, using mortars, barrel artillery, MLRS, FPV drones, and UAVs.

Novhorod-Siverskyi Community:

  • Krasnyi Khutir: 6 explosions (likely from 120mm mortars).

Semenivka Community:

  • Semenivka: 12 explosions (likely from MLRS).
  • Prohres: 8 explosions (likely from barrel artillery).
  • Tymonovychi: 8 explosions (6 from 120mm mortars, 2 likely from FPV drones).
  • Serhiivske: 1 explosion (likely from an FPV drone).
  • Kostobobriv: 9 explosions (6 from barrel artillery, 3 likely from FPV drones).
  • Karpovychi: 8 explosions (7 likely from FPV drones, 1 from barrel artillery).

Horodnia Community:

  • Senkivka: 2 explosions (likely explosive devices dropped from UAVs).

On December 15, the Chernihiv region bid farewell to two Ukrainian Armed Forces soldiers, Serhii Tkachenko and Ruslan Koren, who died defending their homeland. This was reported by the Kipti Village Council and the Mena City Council.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

According to Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Council, last night and this morning, the Air Armed forces were working in the oblast.  Three enemy drones were destroyed. Two private houses, a car, a power line and a gas pipeline were damaged in Dnipro region as a result of the enemy attack.

The enemy attacked Nikopol region about a dozen times a day. They used artillery and kamikaze drones. The occupiers targeted the region centre, Myrove and Marhanets communities.

Since August 2024, the transit centre for IDPs in Dnipropetrovsk oblast has hosted more than 6,000 evacuees from Donetsk oblast. People are given the opportunity to rest, receive assistance, and then sent to safer oblasts.

Vinnytsia oblast

​​A memorial plaque was unveiled in the village of Lishchintsy in Vinnytsia oblast in honour of the fallen defender Ivan Chaban. The defender was a member of the Chervona Kalyna assault brigade.

Kirovohrad oblast

In Kropyvnytskyi, a reminder action “Do not be silent. Captivity Kills!” in support of missing and captured soldiers. The aim of the action is to remind the public about the defenders of Mariupol who are now in russian captivity.

Poltava oblast

Nearly one and a half hundred IDPs from the east of the country have been sheltered in the dormitory of Reshetylivka Agricultural Lyceum in Poltava oblast. 128 of them are people from Pokrovsk of Donetsk oblast who were evacuated in August 2024.

Cherkasy oblast

Ihor Taburets, Head of Cherkasy Regional Military Administration, reported that at night, defenders destroyed 5 russian UAVs in Cherkasy oblast.

An action “Don’t be silent – captivity kills!” was held in Cherkasy. Relatives of the soldiers and concerned citizens gathered to commemorate the captured and missing soldiers.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

On 14 December, the russian army conducted 429 attacks on the territory of 19 towns and villages in Zaporizhzhya oblast:

— four times it shelled Novoandriivka, Mala Tokmachka and Novodarivka with multiple rocket launchers;

— 12 air strikes on the territory of Huliai Pole, Temyrivka, Mala Tokmachka, Novopavlivka, Robotyne and Novodarivka;

— 119 artillery attacks on the territory of Lobkove, Stepnohirsk, Shcherbaky, Huliai Pole, Mala Tokmachka, Novoandriivka, Novodanylivka, Bilohiria, Novodarivka, Malynivka, and Olhivske;

— 294 UAVs attacked the territory of Bilenke, Yurkivka, Yulivka, Maryivka, Lobkove, Prymorske, Shcherbaky, Huliai Pole, Mala Tokmachka, Novoandriivka, Novodanylivka, Bilohirya, Novodarivka, Temyrivka, Malynivka, Olhivske;

Ivan Fedorov, Head of Zaporizhzhia Military Administration, said that on 14 December, two people were injured in Bilenke village as a result of shelling by the russian military. There were 16 reports of the destruction of residential buildings and infrastructure. 

According to the SES, on 14 December, a fire broke out in the village of Stepnohirsk as a result of russian shelling. A residential building was on fire on an area of 50 m². Rescuers extinguished the fire. 

150 Mavic drones were delivered to the frontline for Ukrainian soldiers by a community in Zaporizhzhia oblast. Half of the drones are equipped with night vision devices. 

Mykolaiv oblast

According to Vitalii Kim, Head of Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, in the morning of 15 December, the russian army attacked Mykolaiv with a Shahed 131/136 drone. The strike caused damage to an infrastructure facility and injured three people. Utilities are inspecting residential properties near the site of the hit.

On the night of 15 December, the  Air Armed forces in Mykolaiv oblast destroyed four Shahed 131/136 drones.

On 14 December, at 08:25, 08:38, 09:02 and 09:14, the Russian army attacked Ochakiv with FPV drones, with no casualties. The Russian military also attacked settlements of Kutsurub community with drones seven times. In the village of Solonchaky, a 60-year-old driver sustained shrapnel wounds when a drone hit a Ukrposhta vehicle. The injured man was taken to Mykolaiv and is in stable condition as of the morning of 15 December.

Odesa oblast

State Environmental Inspectorate of the South-Western District reported that on 29 November, almost 20 tonnes of carbon dioxide were released into the air as a result of hostile shelling of transport infrastructure in the village of Velykodolynske. An enemy strike caused a fire in a building and equipment over an area of 250 square metres, which led to the release of carbon dioxide into the air.

According to Oleh Kiper, Head of Odesa RMA, building of social housing for the military is planned in Odesa oblast. The Odesa Military Administration will be the customer of the projects. Odesa oblast also has a programme to compensate the interest rate on mortgages obtained under eHouse for the military, law enforcement, rescuers, and border guards. So far, 360 people have taken advantage of this opportunity.

Bolgrad Regional State Administration said that the installation of a modular fortification shelter was completed in one of the kindergartens of the Horodnia community. The structure is designed for 80 people and meets all safety requirements. 

Kherson oblast

Kherson RMA reported that a local resident was injured as a result of the nighttime russian shelling of Bilozirka. The 49-year-old man sustained contusion, blast and craniocerebral injuries. An ambulance crew treated him on the spot.

Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of Kherson Regional Military Administration, said that over the past day, russian troops shelled 38 settlements on the right bank of Kherson oblast. Five people were injured. As a result of russian strikes on 14 December, two multi-storey buildings, 23 private houses, gas pipelines, an outbuilding, a service station, a garage and private cars were damaged in the region.

Kizomys, Stanislav, Tomina Balka, Novodmitrivka, Daryivka, Fedorivka, Shlyakhove, Novooleksandrivka, Shyroka Balka, Antonivka, Novovorontsovka, Komyshany, Honcharne, Kachkarivka, Chervony Maiak, Sadove were under fire and air strikes by the russian army, Bilozerka, Pryozerne, Prydniprovske, Beryslav, Tomaryne, Lvove, Poniativka, Sablukivka, Havrylivka, Ivanivka, Osokorivka, Tokarivka, Vyrivka, Mykhailivka, Mykolaivka, Zmiivka, Respublikanets, Vesele, Tyahyntsi, Odradokamyanka, Kozatske and Kherson.

The Southern Defence Forces reported that Ukrainian troops inflicted further losses on the russian army in the south on 14 December and eliminated 76 occupiers. They also managed to destroy a Tor anti-aircraft missile system, a Terek mobile two-coordinate all-round radar station, 20 vehicles, nine artillery pieces, a mortar, six Shahed-136 UAVs, eight reconnaissance drones, six boats, an ATV, a motorcycle, seven drone control antennas and a russian army starlink. In addition, the Ukrainian military struck 20 dugouts, including a place of residence for personnel, 11 engineering fortifications, an ammunition storage site and a fuel and lubricant storage site, two UAV take-off sites and an occupant observation post.

The construction of underground schools in Mala Oleksandrivka, Bila Krynytsia and Vysokopillia was inspected by Oksen Lisovyi, Minister of Education and Science,  during his working visit to Kherson oblast. He reminded that all three settlements have been affected by the russian occupation. All children from these communities are currently studying remotely. In Vysokopillya, the construction of a school is almost at the final stage.

Kherson Regional Military Administration reported that volunteers from the Global Empowerment Mission and the Howard G. Buffett Foundation delivered food packages to Beryslav region on the right bank of the Kherson oblast. The aid was delivered to residents of Rakivka, Taras Shevchenko and Urozhayne villages. They received long-term storage products, including oil, cereals, canned food, flour and sugar.

The Yellow Ribbon Resistance Movement said that the occupation authorities of Nova Kakhovka have lost control over the situation with stray animals in the two years they have been “managing” the city. An invasion of stray dogs was recorded there. The occupation administration has stopped the programmes to sterilise street cats and dogs that have been running since 2020. In addition, the russians are obstructing the activities of shelters: they do not accept Ukrainian permits and prohibit volunteer fundraising to support their activities.

Volyn oblast

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Ivano-Frankivsk community sent 30 FPV drones to the 78th battalion thanks to the budget funds.

Lviv oblast

The RMA presented 35 veterans with monetary certificates for obtaining apartments. In total, 64 veterans from 17 communities will be able to purchase housing.

Vasyl Yaremko Yariy, Commander of the 2nd hundred White Demons of the 49th Separate Assault Brigade Karpatska Sich, from the village of Krotoshyn was awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine with the award of the Golden Star order. He was killed on 25 January 2024 in the village of Makiivka, Svativ region, Luhansk oblast.

In honor of Mykola Hembych, Commander of a Combat Vehicle and a Mechanized Division, a memorial plaque was opened in his native village Verkhne Vysotsk, Boryn community. In June of this year, he went missing in Donetsk oblast. 

Rivne oblast

During the year, the state financed the purchase of 57 apartments for veterans worth almost UAH 120m within the framework of the Heroes Policy in the Rivne oblast.

Ternopil oblast

Ternopil City Council reported that since the beginning of 2024, 275 soldiers of the community have already received one-time cash assistance for treatment and rehabilitation.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

In the evening and at night, during an air alarm signal, the Air Defense Forces destroyed 3 enemy UAVs of the Shahed type. There were no injuries, killed or property damage.

Khmelnytskyi community sent FPV-drones and a DJI Mavic 3T copter to the Svoboda battalion from budget funds.

Khmelnytskyi City Council reported that in the community, almost UAH 2.5m were allocated for 48 families of prisoners or missing persons.

Posthumous awards were presented to families of fallen defenders of Ukraine in Chernivtsi RMA. The III degree For Courage Order (posthumously) was awarded to senior lieutenant Roman Hrys, sergeant Serhii Brychak, junior sergeants Anton Chupryna and Mykola Fediuk, senior soldier Ruslan Kurysh, soldiers Vitalii Makoviichuk, Vitalii Marchuk, Oleksii Solomin, Volodymyr Domitraschuk and Yurii Pechenezhskyi, soldiers who were killed defending their lives for the state sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.

Germany has allocated €37bn billion in aid to Ukraine since the start of the full-scale russian invasion. Olaf Scholz, Chancellor of Germany, also confirmed that the country will send the 6th IRIS-T air defense system and Patriot launchers to Ukraine by the end of the year.

Ambassadors of the countries of the EU agreed on the 15th package of sanctions in response to russia’s aggression against Ukraine. The package adds more individuals and organizations to the already existing sanctions list and targets organizations in russia and 3rd countries other than the russian federation that indirectly contribute to russia’s military and technological advancement by circumventing export restrictions.

Kornelia Dudaite, Lithuanian athlete, was disqualified from the World Championship. The reason is that she was wearing a t-shirt with the inscription Make russia Small Again, which she wore as a sign of protest, since among the participants was the russian national team, which was supposed to perform under a neutral flag, but the announcer under the time of the announcement called them russians. In addition, racist athletes came out in T-shirts with the inscription of their country. Organizers demanded that she take off her T-shirt, because it allegedly insults russian athletes. Dudaite refused and dropped out. As a sign of protest, 28 athletes of the Lithuanian delegation withdrew from the functional sports competitions held in Hungary.
