War in Ukraine today: latest news, 13 March 2025 (photo)

It has been the 1114 th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression.

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

To date, the enemy has attacked the positions of the Defence Forces 84 times. It is most active towards Popovsk and Toretsk.  

Russian artillery shelling affected the border areas of our country, in particular the settlements of Ulanove, Starykove, Kucherivka, Slavhorod, Yastrubshchyna, Sydorivka in Sumy oblast; and Vidrodzhenivske in Kharkiv oblast.  

Towards Kharkiv, the enemy attacked our defenders’ positions three times near Vovchansk and Doroshivka. One firefight is ongoing.

The enemy attacked our positions twice towards Kupiansk, near Holubivka and Bohuslavka, and one firefight is still ongoing.  

Towards Lyman, Ukrainian troops repelled five attacks in the vicinity of Yampolivka and two more attacks near Zelena Dolyna, Novyi, Novomykhailivka.

Three combat engagements were recorded towards Siversk, and two clashes are still ongoing in the area of Verkhnekamianske.

One hostile attack is currently taking place towards Kramatorsk. The enemy is attacking in the area of Chasiv bYar. Our defenders are giving a worthy fight back.

Towards Toretsk, russian invaders conducted 11 assaults on the positions of our defenders in the areas of Toretsk and Druzhba. Three firefights are still ongoing.

The situation is the hottest towards Pokrovsk: since the beginning of the day, the invaders have already launched 32 attacks on the positions of our defenders near the settlements of Yelyzavetivka, Promin, Lysivka, Kotlyne, Udachne, Uspenivka, Novooleksandrivka, Novoserhiivka, Kotliarivka, Oleksiivka and Andriivka. The defence forces repelled 25 enemy attacks, with seven combat engagements continuing to this day. The enemy’s aviation launched airstrikes with anti-aircraft gunships on Pokrovsk.  

Towards Novopavlivka, the invaders attacked the positions of Ukrainian troops near Kostiantynopil three times, Ukrainian defenders have already repelled two enemy attacks, and the battle is ongoing.  

Towards Huliaipole, our defenders repelled four enemy attacks in the areas of Novopil and Novosilka, and another battle is ongoing. The settlements of Novopil, Zaliznychne, Huliaipole were attacked by air with unguided missiles, and the enemy dropped unmanned aerial vehicles near Shevchenko and Vilne Pole.  

Towards Orikhib, the occupiers are attacking in the area of Stepove, Piatikhatky, Kamianske, as well as in the direction of Novoandriivka, with the support of attack aircraft. At present, one enemy attack has been repelled, seven more are ongoing.

Towards Kherson, the enemy did not conduct any active offensive actions today.  

In Kursk oblast, according to the information currently available, our defenders repelled five attacks by the invaders, and four more engagements are ongoing. In addition, the enemy carried out 18 air strikes, dropping 27 guided aerial bombs, and carried out 106 artillery attacks, including one from multiple launch rocket systems.  

No significant changes have been observed in other areas.


Donetsk Regional Prosecutor’s Office reported that 8 civilians, including a child, were wounded as a result of russian strikes on Kostiantynivka and Pokrovsk in Donetsk oblast. All the victims received medical assistance.

Deputy Minister of Defence Kateryna Chernohorenko stated that Rezerv+ will have a service to pay fines for violations of military registration. The Rezerv+ team is already working on the launch, but the timing of the new feature will be announced later.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

Frontline

The General Staff reported that as of 4pm, russian troops have attacked the positions of the Defence Forces near Vovchansk and Doroshivka three times, and twice near Holubivka and Bohuslavka. Two attacks continue.

The RMA reported that the enemy attacked twice towards Kharkiv yesterday near Vovchansk. Eight times the enemy tried to advance on our positions towards Kupiansk near Petropavlivka, Stepova Novoselivka and Zahryzove.

Attacks

Oleh Syniehubov, Head of the RMA, said that two and a half weeks after the launch of the system of separate air raid alerts for Kharkiv and the oblast, only 13% of air raid alerts in the oblast do not include a threat to Kharkiv, the head of the regional administration, Oleg Sinegubov, said. The city council reported that the duration of air alerts in Kharkiv decreased by 35 hours after the launch of separate alerts – these are the results of the differentiation system over the first 2.5 weeks.

Mayor Ihor Terekhov stated that in the evening, the russians attacked Novobavarskyi district of Kharkiv with a drone.

At 12:26am, russians attacked Chuhuiv. One hit by a Shahed UAV on the ground on the territory of the enterprise was recorded, and the shelling damaged the administrative building, the garage of the enterprise and five trucks.

At 11:48am, russians attacked Horokhovatka village. A private house was destroyed and a car damaged.

At 12pm, russians attacked Kupiansk. A man of 60 years old was injured as a result of the shelling by MLRS, he was diagnosed with an explosive wound with damage to the chest, he was hospitalised.

At 8:20am, russians attacked Liutivka village, outside the settlement. An FPV drone hit a truck.

At 8am, russians attacked Zolochiv village. A car was on fire as a result of the shelling.

A 67-year-old man was injured as a result of a mine explosion in Bohodukhiv community.

Donetsk oblast

Frontline

The russian army attacked Pokrovsk and Toretsk frontlines the most yesterday. According to the morning report of the General Staff, out of 138 battles on the frontline on 12 March, 45 assaults and attacks were repelled by the Ukrainian Armed Forces towards Pokrovsk,

19 – towards Toretsk,

10 – towards Novopavlivske,

9 – towards Siversk,

7 – towards Lyman,

1 – towards Kramatorsk.

Towards Pokrovsk front, russian troops attacked along the entire frontline, including near the settlements recently recaptured by the defence forces.

Dmytro Zaporozhets, spokesman of the Luhansk military unit, reported that russian invaders significantly increased the number of artillery attacks and assaults towards Toretsk over the last week, as well as increased the size of infantry assault groups.

Attacks

Donetsk Regional Prosecutor’s Office said that russian invaders shelled Kostiantynivka and Pokrovsk with Smerch multiple rocket launchers, wounding 8 people, including a 15-year-old teenager in Pokrovsk. All of the wounded were diagnosed with mine-blast injuries, shrapnel wounds and contusions.

The day before, police recorded 3,068 enemy attacks on the frontline and residential areas. Russian troops focused their fire on 7 settlements: Druzhkivka, Kostiantynivka, Lyman, Myrnohrad, Pokrovsk, Toretsk, Oleksiievo-Druzhkivka. 287 civilian objects were damaged, including 228 residential buildings.

The russians struck Myrnohrad with 7 bombs, artillery and a drone, killing two civilians and injuring another. 13 apartment blocks and 12 private houses, 2 educational institutions, an administrative building, a critical infrastructure facility, and tractors were destroyed.

In Pokrovsk, one person was killed and one was wounded in the shelling, 5 apartment buildings, 4 private houses and an educational institution were damaged.

The enemy attacked Druzhkivka twice, including with an UMPB D-30 SN bomb, wounding two children, boys born in 2015 and 2016. Eight apartment buildings and 27 private houses, 2 administrative buildings, a dormitory, tram tracks, cars, and power grids were damaged.

The occupiers dropped two FAB-250 bombs on Oleksiievo-Druzhkivka, injuring two civilians and damaging 33 private houses, a garage and two cars.

Head Serhii Horbunov reported that russia launched 21 strikes on Kostiantynivka, including 18 bomb attacks, injuring 8 people, and there is information about two dead under the rubble. 10 apartment blocks and 115 private houses, a pharmacy, a shop, a utility building, 13 cars, 6 gas pipelines, and 7 power lines were destroyed. On 13 March, rescuers pulled two people alive from the rubble of a multi-storey building in Kostiantynivka.

 A man and a woman were trapped in an apartment as a result of a Russian strike on a multi-storey building on 12 March. The victims have been trapped under the rubble since yesterday evening .

In Lyman, artillery shelling damaged a private house, a tractor and two trailers, and the power grid.

Rescuers are still finding explosives at the site of the shelling in Dobropillya after the Russian attack on 7 March, when the russian army shelled the town with various types of weapons, killing 11 people and injuring fifty. Residents board up windows, search for surviving items and pay tribute to the victims with flowers.

The National Resistance Centre reported that russian occupiers in Donetsk oblast are planning to increase the volume of Ukrainian grain exports from the region.

Luhansk oblast

The RMA reported that russians attacked near Hrekivka and in Bilohorivka yesterday, trying to force the Ukrainian Armed Forces out of their positions. The enemy used cannon artillery 11 times.

It had air support. It sent 188 drones towards Ukrainian defenders and settlements.

‘Septembers’, ‘Pioneers’ and ‘Trudoviks’ will be joined by ‘eaglets’: the occupiers in Luhansk oblast are introducing a propaganda programme in kindergartens.  

In some cities of the “luhansk people’s republic”, they have started accepting applications for russian passports. However, only the old model, which is valid for five years. It is not yet known how long the procedure will take. Those wishing to become holders of the new biometric passport will still have to travel to Rostov. By the way, old passports were issued there throughout the years of occupation.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

The RMA reported that two private houses were damaged in Boryspil region of Kyiv oblast as a result of an enemy attack. The enemy struck the area at night with a UAV. There were no civilian casualties.

Ihor Klymenko, Minister of Internal Affairs, informed that the liquidation of the consequences of the russian drone attack on the shelter over the fourth power unit of the Chornobyl nuclear power plant lasted 490 hours in total. He visited the Chornobyl exclusion zone together with the Minister of the Interior of Finland Marie Rantanen. Together they recognised the rescuers who worked to extinguish the fire.

In Kyiv, relatives of prisoners of war gathered near the Verkhovna Rada to hold a rally dedicated to the defenders of Mariupol. More than fifty relatives of prisoners of war joined the rally. They brought posters with photos of their loved ones, as well as posters calling for “not to forget about the prisoners” and “to return those who have been held captive for almost three years”.

On 12 March, a meeting with representatives of the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) was held at Kyiv Regional Military Administration. The meeting focused on priority areas for further cooperation. As of today, thanks to JICA’s assistance, social institutions in Kyiv oblast have received 11 cars and 22 mobile physiotherapy devices, and more than 62,600 copies of school textbooks have been transferred to educational institutions. The oblast also received specialised equipment for environmentally friendly recycling of construction waste, diesel generators and heaters.

Mental health spaces will be created in 69 communities of Kyiv oblast for participants in the educational process as part of the All-Ukrainian Mental Health Programme “How are you?”

Zhytomyr oblast

A forestry worker who was recently injured by a mine explosion in Zhytomyr oblast was taken to hospital. Doctors operated on the victim and saved his life. According to the branch of the Kyiv Forestry Office of the State Enterprise “Forests of Ukraine”, the explosion occurred near forest areas that were under russian occupation. According to the sappers, a professionally hidden enemy mine could have caused the explosion. A fire broke out in the area and quickly spread towards the forest. A group of foresters arrived to localise the fire. The tractor hit the mine while creating a protective mineralised strip between the forest and the field.

Vitalii Bunechko, Head of the Regional Medical Association, announced that more than 90,000 servicemen received medical care in Zhytomyr oblast healthcare facilities in 2024 and 2025. More than 40% of defenders received services in regional medical institutions.

The forum “Forest Resources: Modern Challenges and Prospects” was held in Zhytomyr oblast. According to the head of the regional military administration, 376 employees of the region’s forestry enterprises joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Sumy oblast

Oleksandr Syrskyi, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, reported that in the operational zone of “Kursk” military grouping, active combat operations continue in the outskirts of Sudzha and the surrounding areas. As of 6pm on 12 March, Ukrainian forces were repelling eight assault operations towards Kursk. According to him, russia is attempting to move the combat operations from Kursk oblast to Sumy and Kharkiv oblast.

According to Deep State, the russian army is attempting to advance into Basivka, located between Zhuravka and Novenke in Sumy oblast. It is reported that the Defence Forces struck russian troops in Basivka.

Andrii Demchenko,  Spokesperson of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, informed that russian troops continue to carry out sabotage and reconnaissance activities towards Sumy oblast. They remain most active in the north, closer to Chernihiv oblast.

Serhii Minakov, head of Esman community, reported that on the afternoon of 13 March, the russian army struck Kucheriivka village in Esman community by an FPV-drone. As a result of the attack, a house caught fire. During the attack, there were no people in the house as they had been evacuated.

According to the Regional Military Administration, during the night of 13 March, three russian Shahed drones fell on the territory of a garage cooperative in Okhtyrka community. Preliminary police reports indicate that 40 garages and 10 vehicles were damaged. The area is still being inspected.

Sumy Regional Prosecutor’s Office informed that in the morning of 13 March, russian forces shelled Bilovody village in Khotin community of Sumy region. As a result of the attack, two civilian men, aged 35 and 37, were injured and hospitalised.

Mykola Torianyk, Head of Khotin community, said that in the evening of 12 March, the russian army struck Khotin by an Iskander-M missile. As a result of the attack, a school was destroyed. According to him, this was the last school in the community that the russians destroyed.

According to the Regional Military Administration, during the night and morning, the russians carried out 39 shellings of border areas and settlements in Sumy oblast. A total of 51 explosions were recorded. The Yunakivka, Myropillia, Bilopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, and Okhtyrka communities came under fire.

Over Sumy oblast, Ukrainian anti-aircraft gunners shot down 10 enemy Shahed-type UAVs. Since the beginning of the year, the region’s air defence units have eliminated 685 russian drones.

Sumy Regional Military Administration reported that as a result of russian shelling on 12 March, a resident of Seredyna-Buda community was killed, and two more people were injured in Khotin community.

Throughout the day on 12 March, russian forces carried out 71 shellings in Sumy oblast, with a total of 130 explosions recorded. The enemy used mortars (12 explosions), artillery (20 explosions), MLRS (35 explosions), self-propelled guns (4 explosions), launched a missile strike (1 explosion), dropped GAB-type aerial bombs (4 explosions), conducted FPV-drone strikes (36 explosions), and dropped explosive devices from UAVs (19 explosions). Eleven communities came under enemy fire: Khotin, Yunakivka, Myropillia, Krasnopillia, Bilopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Esman, Shalyhyne, Seredyna-Buda, Svesa, and Znob-Novhorod.

From eight settlements in Yunakivka and Myropillia communities, 543 people, including 20 children, are being evacuated. The decision for mandatory evacuation for safety reasons was made on 13 March by the Regional Defence Council.

Volodymyr Artiukh, Head of the Regional Military Administration, announced that  volunteers from seven territorial communities in Sumy oblast received monetary certificates for destroying enemy targets.

Chernihiv oblast

Nova Basan Village Council reported that during the night of 13 March, a russian drone fell on the territory of an agricultural enterprise in Nova Basan village. The workshop of the agricultural enterprise suffered the most from the blast wave. Additionally, a private residential house and farm buildings were damaged by the explosion.

According to Chernihiv Border Detachment, throughout 12 March, russian forces attacked two border communities in Chernihiv oblast: Semenivka and Horodnia. The enemy carried out mortar shelling (34 explosions), artillery shelling (19 explosions), FPV-drone strikes (2 explosions), and dropped explosive devices from UAVs (2 explosions). Seven settlements came under enemy fire.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of the RMA, reported that russian forces launched a massive Shahed drone attack targeting infrastructure in Dnipropetrovsk oblast. In Dnipro, an infrastructure facility was damaged. Windows in high-rise buildings were shattered and garages destroyed. A 52-year-old woman was injured and hospitalised in moderate condition. Infrastructure was damaged in Samarskyi district, where a fire broke out. The flames destroyed a car, while 3 other cars, 2 trucks, a minibus, a multi-apartment building, an administrative building and farm structures were damaged. An infrastructure facility in Synelnykove region was hit.

Ukrainian air defence forces operated in the oblast, shooting down 11 enemy drones. Late last night, russian forces attacked Nikopol region by artillery and a kamikaze drone, targeting Myrove and Pokrov communities.

Throughout the day, Nikopol region was attacked nearly 20 times by artillery and drones. The russian forces targeted the regional centre, Marhanets, Chervonohryhorivk and Pokrov communities. 2 women, aged 61 and 72, were injured. Private houses and farm structures were damaged. Also, russian troops shelled Mezhova community in Synelnykove region, damaging a gas pipeline.

Vinnytsia oblast

​Vinnytsia resident Serhii Yudenko won his 4th Ukrainian billiards championship title among wheelchair users.

Poltava oblast

On the eve of Ukrainian Volunteer Day, more than 40 fallen soldiers were honoured in regional centre. Families of the fallen were presented with the Defender of Ukraine – Hero of Poltava award.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, on 12 March, the Defence Forces repelled 14 russian attacks in Huliaipole and Orikhiv regions. Clashes occurred near Pryvilne, Novodarivka, Piatykhatky, Kamianske and towards Novoandriivka.

Ivan Fedorov, Head of Zaporizhzhia RMA, reported that russian forces attacked Zaporizhzhia by Shahed drones. A private house and an administrative building of a critical infrastructure facility were damaged. There were no casualties reported.

Based on the information provided by the State Emergency Service, on 12 March, 3 fires broke out due to russian shelling in Zaporizhzhia oblast. Firefighters extinguished a fire in an administrative building in Zaporizhzhia.

Ivan Fedorov, Head of the RMA, stated that on 12 March, russian troops carried out 296 attacks on 14 settlements in the oblast. They launched 147 drone strikes of various modifications targeting Zaporizhzhia, Kushuhum, Kamianske, Huliaipole, Orikhiv, Shcherbaky, Novodanylivka, Mala Tokmachka, Charivne, Novodarivka and Preobrazhenka.

Mykolaiv oblast

According to the RMA, on the night of 13 March, air defence forces shot down 1 Shahed drone over Mykolaiv oblast.

On 12 March, russian forces launched 3 FPV drone attacks on Kutsurub community and targeted Ochakiv city and the waters of Ochakiv community. There were no casualties reported.

Odesa oblast

The Operational Command South reported that defence forces destroyed 14 drones over Odesa oblast.

Oleh Kiper, Head of Odesa RMA, informed that a private garage caught fire in Odesa oblast due to a drone attack, but the fire was extinguished. In Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi region, drone debris ignited dry grass and an abandoned medical facility. Both fires were contained. There were no casualties reported.

Kherson oblast

Roman Mrochko, Head of Kherson RMA, said that around 11:30am, russian forces attacked Dniprovskyi district of Kherson by a drone, injuring 3 people, who were taken to the hospital.

Referring to the Prosecutor’s Office, a russian drone attack on Beryslav killed a 68-year-old man, another resident was injured.

Roman Mrochko, Head of the RMA, added that russian shelling partially cut off electricity in Zelenivka, Korabelnyi and Tsentralnyi districts of Kherson, Molodizhne, Naddniprianske and Inzhenerne. Experts are assessing the damage.

A 60-year-old man in Dniprovskyi district of Kherson was injured by a russian drone attack, sustaining shrapnel wounds to his back and legs.

A 42-year-old woman was killed in Kherson due to russian artillery shelling.

In the morning, russian forces shelled Dniprovskyi district of Kherson by MLRS, damaging houses and causing a fire. Currently, there are no reports of casualties.

Overnight on 12 March, russian aviation struck Kherson oblast by 10 guided bombs.

5 fires broke out in Kherson due to russian nighttime shelling, damaging a farm building, an abandoned structure, 3 cars, a balcony of a high-rise building and an attic of a house. Firefighters extinguished the blazes despite the risk of further attacks.

On the evening of 12 March, russian artillery struck Tomaryne village, destroying a house.

Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of Kherson RMA, stated that over the past day, one person was killed, 6 injured. The russian forces attacked 38 settlements in Kherson oblast. Gas pipelines, 2 high- rise buildings, 20 private houses and vehicles were damaged.

The RMA added that on 3 March, a 15-year-old boy in Zelenivka, near Kherson, was injured in a russian shelling. On 12 March, he sought medical help, where doctors diagnosed him with blast trauma, acute stress reaction and burns.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

The Military Unit A4115 received a DJI MAVIC 3T Enterprise (Thermal) quadcopter, two DJI Mavic 3 PRO quadcopters, an EcoFlow Delta-2 charging station, and Shelter 6M portable electronic countermeasures against unmanned aerial vehicles from Lutsk community.

The RMA reported that to improve the quality of rehabilitation provision, this year the regional budget has allocated UAH 18.5m for the modernization of institutions providing rehabilitation services.

The RMA held a meeting with the leadership of the Department of Culture of the Lublin Voivodeship (the Republic of Poland). They discussed the prospects for Ukrainian-Polish cooperation in the field of culture.

Zakarpattia oblast

To support soldiers who returned from the combat zone, people with disabilities, and other vulnerable categories, the first stage of competitive selection was held in the region among public and charitable organizations that intend to implement projects in the field of social protection of the population in 2025.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

A briefing was held at the RMA for media representatives regarding the implementation of the experimental project of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Contract 18-24 based on the 10th Separate Mountain Assault Brigade Edelveis. The project program offers the opportunity for Ukrainian citizens aged 18 to 24 to voluntarily serve in the Armed Forces of Ukraine under a 1-year contract. After that, they can be exempted from service for a year.

Lviv oblast

Lviv RMA held a meeting with families of prisoners of war and missing persons. The event was organized to support families and discuss urgent issues, such as benefits for families of prisoners of war and missing persons, as well as procedures for searching for and identifying missing persons and prisoners of war.

As part of a joint fundraiser between Lviv City Council and the Return Alive CF, Ukrainian military personnel received 40 modern sights for grenade launchers, as well as Bronia computing and graphics systems. Along with the equipment, the soldiers underwent appropriate training to effectively use the new equipment at the front.

Rivne oblast

The RMA reported that a new rehabilitation center will be built in building №1 of Dubna City Hospital. Construction work has already begun.

The European Commission has approved funding for 6 Ukrainian healthcare institutions. Among them is Rivne Regional Hospital for War Veterans. The project will be implemented by the Czech government under the Ukraine Facility program.

Ternopil oblast

In Ternopil, 6 vehicles were handed over to the Armed Forces of Ukraine by a delegation from the Kingdom of Norway. In total, since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the public organization has already handed over 133 vehicles to the Ukrainian army.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

45 families of fallen Heroes of Khmelnytskyi community will receive material assistance. The total amount is over UAH 1m. 29 families of prisoners of war and missing persons will receive financial assistance. The total amount is UAH 1.3m.

Chernivtsi oblast

The RMA held a meeting with Ravi Shankar, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of India to Ukraine. They discussed opportunities for cooperation and launching joint humanitarian and investment projects in various sectors.

The RMA reported that Senior Lieutenant Roman Hrys was awarded with the II degree Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky (posthumously).

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Ukraine has received the first tranche of $1.7bn from Canada under the G7 Extraordinary Revenue Acceleration for Ukraine initiative. The funds will be directed to priority needs of the state budget.

Finland announced the 28th package of military aid to Ukraine for €200m.

Poul Jonsson, Head of the Swedish Ministry of Defense, announced that the country will send 18 Archer artillery systems to Ukraine. He noted that the 18th defense package worth approximately $300m will also include 5 ARTHUR artillery radars.

The French parliament has called for increased support for Ukraine and the seizure of russian assets. The resolution was passed by 288 votes.

Marie Rantanen, Finnish Minister of the Interior, visited Kyiv. The Finnish Minister of the Interior met with her Ukrainian counterpart Ihor Klymenko.
