War in Ukraine today: latest news, 10 May 2025 (photo)

It has been the 1172nd day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

On 10 May, there were  84 combat clashes on the frontline. Ukrainian defenders are stopping the enemy, holding the lines and destroying russians’ plans.

Settlements in Ukraine have suffered from russian artillery shelling, in particular Chuikivka, Maryine, Brusky, Ulanov, Yastrubshchyna, and Bila Bereza in Sumy oblast.

Towards Kharkiv, the Defense Forces repelled one enemy assault near Vovchansk. Another enemy attack is still ongoing near Kamianka settlement.

Towards Kupiansk, the enemy did not conducted any active actions.

Towards Lyman, there were three combat clashes, one of which is still ongoing. The enemy attacked in the vicinity of the Ridkodub and Zelena Dolyna settlements.

Towards Siversk, the enemy launched one attack, which Ukrainian soldiers successfully stopped. The occupier units tried to advance towards Hryhorivka.

Towards Kramatorsk direction, our defenders repelled four enemy attacks. The enemy conducted offensive operations near Orikhovo-Vasylivka, Chasovye Yar and towards Bila Hora and Predtechynoye. Two clashes are still ongoing.

Towards Toretsk, the defense forces successfully stopped all enemy attacks. The enemy tried to advance four times in the vicinity of the settlements of Druzhba, Toretsk and Diliivka.

Towards Pokrovsk, the enemy launched clashes of varying intensity 31 times towards the settlements of Myroliubivka, Kotliarivka, Myrne, Zoria and near the settlements of Malynivka, Yelyzavetivka, Lysivka, Dachenske, Zvirove, Kotlyne, Novoserhiivka, Udachne, Novooleksandrivka, Preobrazhenka, and Andriivka. Ukrainian defenders repelled 27 enemy attacks.

Towards Novopavlivka, Ukrainian defenders repelled eight enemy attacks near the settlements of Kostiantynopol, Novosilka, Vilne Pole, Pryvilne and in the vicinity of Bahatyr, Shevchenko, and Novopol. Five enemy attacks are still ongoing.

Towards Huliaipole, the settlements of Malynivka and Zaliznychne were subjected to airstrikes with unguided missiles.

Towards Orikhiv, the enemy conducted two attacks near the settlement of Stepove and towards Novodanylivka. They were unsuccessful.

Towards Kherson, the enemy conducted one futile attack towards the positions of Ukrainian  defenders.

Towards Kursk, Ukrainian defenders repelled 12 attacks by the invaders, and four more clashes are still ongoing. In addition, the enemy carried out three airstrikes, dropping four guided bombs, and also launched 156 artillery shells, including three from multiple launch rocket systems.

In the remaining directions, there were no significant changes in the situation.

Ukrainian troops are exhausting the enemy along the entire line of combat contact and in the rear.

Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of Kherson RMA, reports that 3 more children were returned from the temporarily occupied territory of the Kherson region. These are children aged 12 to 16.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy says that Ukraine is ready for peace talks in any format after the establishment of a complete and unconditional ceasefire for at least 30 days.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

Frontline

Referring to Oleh Synehubov, Head of Kharkiv RMA, there were 196 combat clashes on May 9. Towards Kharkiv, the aggressor stormed the positions of Ukrainian defenders near Vovchansk six times. Towards Kupiansk, there were three attacks by the occupiers. The defense forces repelled the enemy’s assault actions in the vicinity of Zahryzve and Nova Kruhliakivka.

Shelling

 Andrii Besedin, Head of Kupiansk RMA, states that during May 8-9, russians continued to strike Kupiansk community of Kharkiv oblast with various types of weapons, despite putin’s unilateral declaration of a three-day “truce”. The enemy struck with FPV drones, artillery, and multiple launch rocket systems. On May 8, two utility workers were injured in Kupiansk when a russian FPV drone hit their car. One of them received head and arm injuries and was in moderate condition.

Referring to Oleh Synehubov, Head of Kharkiv RMA, over the past 24 hours Kharkiv oblast was not shelled. There were no casualties.

Other

Chris Garrett, 40-year-old volunteer and veteran from the UK, who was engaged in demining in Ukraine and participated in the ATO since 2014, died from injuries sustained in a blast near Izium in Kharkiv oblast on May 6. He served in the Defense Forces since 2014 and was a co-founder of the public organization “Prevail Together”, which specializes in demining and medical and humanitarian assistance.

The RMA reported that five humanitarian hubs operate in Kharkiv oblast in Vovchansk, Lipetsk, Kurylivka, Kupiansk and Kindrashivka. In each of the hubs, people can receive food and hygiene kits, medical assistance, monetary support, and free legal advice.

Donetsk oblast

Frontline

 The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that on May 9, russian troops attacked more than 80 times in Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts. They  stormed most towards Pokrovsk and Novopavlivka.

Shelling

Vadym Filashkin, Head of the regional military administration, reported that two people were killed and two wounded in Donetsk oblast from russian shelling over the past day. russian shelling killed people in Siversk and Rivne, and two residents were wounded in Kostiantynivka and Mykolaipillia.

The regional police reported that there were 2,390 strikes on the frontline and residential areas in Donetsk oblast on May 9. The russian army attacked: Dobropillia, Kostiantynivka, Siversk, Mykolaipillia, Nelypivka, Rai-Oleksandrivka, and Rivne. 12 civilian objects were damaged, including 10 residential buildings.

The occupiers struck Siversk with artillery, killing a person and destroying a private home.

In Rivne, Myrnohrad community, a person was killed as a result of an attack by a russian drone.

Kostiantynivka was hit by drones and artillery, a person was injured, 2 apartment buildings and 3 private houses destroyed.

In Mykolaipillia, a person was injured and a car damaged as a result of a hit by a Lancet UAV.

Other

Mariupol City Council reported that residents of occupied Mariupol complain about river pollution. The situation is a consequence of destroying the ecological ecosystem by the russian occupiers: no one is cleaning the rivers, sea, and water; the city has a critical situation with the sewage system, low water quality, and builders periodically fill the river with slag and construction waste. Fish kills have been recorded in the sea and river.

Luhansk oblast

Oleksii Kharchenko, Head of Luhansk regional military administration, informs that on May 9, the occupiers attacked both towards Lyman and Seversk. There were 25 enemy assaults there. In Luhansk oblast, russians tried to find weak points in the Ukrainian defense in the vicinity of Hrekivka and Belohorivka. The invaders directed 217 drones towards Ukrainian fortifications and surrounding villages, fired 17 times from artillery, 4 times from rocket launchers. 

Oleksii Kharchenko, Head of Luhansk regional military administration, reports that children from the occupied Luhansk oblast will be taken to budget camps in the north and remote regions of russia in the summer. In particular, in Novosibirsk, Tyumen, Bashkortostan and Altai. They will not see any historical sites or modern cities. Instead, boys and girls will be subjected to propaganda, which is the main purpose of such trips.

The Yellow Ribbon movement reported that in occupied Zhdanivka, Luhansk oblast, the occupiers are actively rebuilding a prison that has not functioned for over 10 years.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

European leaders arrived in Kyiv on 10 May to participate in a meeting of the Coalition of the Willing. French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, together with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and First Lady Olena Zelenska, paid tribute to the fallen Ukrainian defenders at Maidan Nezalezhnosti in Kyiv.

The restoration of Makariv community, one of the most affected by russian aggression, is underway. On its territory, russians destroyed 3,940 objects: private and multi-apartment residential buildings, schools, kindergartens, and hospitals. According to Mykola Kalashnyk, the head of Kyiv Regional Military Administration, apartment buildings on Sadova Street, a 5-storey building on Dymytrii Rostovskyi Street, Makariv Lyceum No. 1 are being restored, the Teremok nursery school is being built from scratch, and Makariv Hospital is already undergoing interior work and insulation.

A conference on Ballistic Trauma of Limbs was held in Kyiv for surgeons from the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The doctors gathered to discuss modern methods of diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries ranging from mine-blast to gunshot fractures.

Kyiv City State Administration reported that a new section – Jobs for Defenders – has appeared on the city’s Service Portal. Now, veterans can find out about available vacancies, retraining programmes and get help with job search online. The application is submitted to the Kyiv Military Hub team, and after processing it, its specialists contact the applicant and help resolve the issue.

A new documentary about the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine’s naval operations was presented in Kyiv. The film ‘Sea Battle: The Age of Drones’ from the series ’Military Intelligence of Ukraine” tells about the most successful combat operations in the confrontation with the russian aggressor at sea.

Zhytomyr oblast

Zhytomyr Community Foundation, which joined the tournament organised by the football club, informed that the charity football tournament in memory of Vitaliy Osinskiy and all fallen soldiers held in Zhytomyr in late April raised UAH 400,000. The funds raised during the tournament will be used to purchase equipment in accordance with requests from the 190th and 199th training centres of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Berdychiv Vocational School recently hosted a practical drone assembly event called “From the Past to the Future through Science. Designing Victory Together”. Participants got to know the whole process – from the initial assembly and programming of drones to their testing in an open area. The aim of the event is to combine career guidance, applied education and national and patriotic education of young people.

Recently, a 16-year-old resident of Zviahel called the 102 hotline and reported that enemy agents were trying to recruit him. The police visited the lyceum where the boy was studying and thanked the student. The law enforcement officers learned that the ninth-grader plans to become a police officer and is also fond of computer hardware and software. So they took this into account when choosing gifts. 

Sumy oblast

Sumy Regional Military Administration reported that on 8 and 9 May, during the so-called ‘ceasefire’ declared by kremlin, russian shelling in Sumy oblast killed three people and injured seven.Over two days, the enemy carried out nearly 200 attacks on the oblast.

It is known that as a result of shelling on 9 May in Manukhivka village, Nova Slobidka community, an 85-year-old woman was killed and a 49-year-old man was injured. On 8 May, in Richky village, a 63-year-old woman was killed, and her body was found on 9 May. Also, on 8 May, russian forces dropped a guided aerial bomb on Yastrubyne village, Mykolaivka rural community, where a 55-year-old woman was killed and two others were injured. Over two days, the shelling damaged 39 private houses, one three-storey building, and two apartment buildings.

Yurii Zarko, Head of Bilopillia community, informed that as a result of the russian attack on 9 May in Bilopillia, the architectural landmark — the Church of Saints Peter and Paul — was damaged. Around five houses were destroyed, and at least ten houses and a shop were damaged. Throughout the day and evening, russian forces attacked the city multiple times.

According to the Regional Military Administration, from the morning of 9 May to the morning of 10 May, russian forces carried out over 150 attacks on 32 settlements across 15 territorial communities in the oblast. The enemy actively used guided aerial bombs (nearly 70 strikes), FPV-drones (20 strikes), and UAV-dropped fragmentation munitions (nearly 20 strikes). Additionally, russian forces conducted shelling by Smerch MLRS and launched air-to-ground rockets from a helicopter. The highest number of attacks was recorded in Sumy, Shostka, and Konotop regions.

Due to russian shelling over the past day, six private residential houses in Richky community were damaged, as well as non-residential buildings in Shostka community. Private homes and a civil infrastructure facility were hit in Nova Slobidka community. Additionally, in Bilopillia community, a shop, 17 private homes, 10 utility buildings, and civil infrastructure facilities were damaged. A civil infrastructure site was also affected in the Druzhbivka community.

Local authorities, together with units of the State Emergency Service, the National Police, and civil society organisations from border communities, evacuated 144 people.

The Regional Military Administration announced that over a few days, nearly 700 people were evacuated from Bilopillia and Vorozhba communities in Sumy oblast.

Chernihiv oblast

Chernihiv Border Detachment reported that on 9 May, in Chernihiv oblast, russian forces attacked six villages in Semenivka and Snovsk communities. The enemy carried out mortar shelling (eight strikes) and dropped explosive devices from UAVs (six strikes).

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Council, reported that in the morning, the enemy attacked the Marhanets community of Nikopol region with a kamikaze drone. During the day, the enemy attacked Nikopol region more than a dozen times. They used kamikaze drones and artillery. They targeted the region centre, Marhanets and Myrove communities. A 62-year-old woman was injured in Nikopol as a result of shelling. She received the necessary medical assistance. In total, 4 private houses, a shed, a power line and a gas pipeline were damaged in the area.  The occupants also attacked Mezhivka community in Synelnykove region. An enterprise was damaged.

Kirovohrad oblast

The New Generation educational project is being implemented in Kirovohrad oblast. As part of the project, physical therapists are learning how to use modern techniques to rehabilitate soldiers and civilians after injuries and trauma.

Vinnytsia oblast

​On 10 May, the defender Yurii Bilyi was paid the last tribute in Vinnytsia. He was killed on 8 April while performing a military mission near the village of Yunakivka, Sumy oblast. He was 29 years old.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, on 9 May, the Ukrainian Defence Forces repelled 6 russian attacks in Orikhiv region. Clashes took place near Mali Shcherbaky, Shcherbaky and Stepove.

Ivan Fedorov, Head of Zaporizhzhia RMA, stated that on 9 May, russian forces launched 284 attacks on 13 towns and villages in Zaporizhzhia oblast. Of these, 170 were carried out by drones of various types, targeting Malokaterynivka, Bilenke, Novoiakovlivka, Novoboikivske, Mahdalynivka, Kamianske, Shcherbaky, Huliaipole, Mala Tokmachka, Novodanylivka, Novodarivka and Charivne.

Mykolaiv oblast

Based on the information provided by Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, on 9 May, russian forces carried out 3 FPV drone attacks on Ochakiv city and Ochakiv community. There were no casualties reported.

Odesa oblast

Referring to the Ukrainian Navy, as of 6am, there were no russian naval ships detected in the Black Sea or the Sea of Azov. In the Mediterranean Sea, 3 russian warships were present, including 1 armed with Kalibr cruise missiles capable of launching up to 8 missiles in a single salvo.

During the day, 7 ships passed through the Kerch Strait into the Black Sea in russia’s interest – 4 of which continued toward the Bosporus Strait – and 6 ships entered the Sea of Azov, 5 of them coming from the Bosporus.

Kherson oblast

According to the RMA, on the morning of 9 May due to a drone attack, 58-year-old man was injured in Dniprovskyi district of Kherson. He sustained blast and shrapnel injuries and is in stable condition.

The Southern Defence Forces reported that russian forces have intensified their activity in Dnipropetrovsk region. Yesterday, they attempted to advance 6 times near Antonivskyi railway and road bridges, in the southern part of the island area of Dnipro River.

Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of the RMA, reported that around 7am, russian forces launched a drone strike on another man in Dniprovskyi district of Kherson, killing him on the spot.

According to the State Emergency Service, during the night, a house in Kherson oblast caught fire after being hit by a russian shell. Despite the risk of repeated shelling, emergency responders extinguished the fire. 

Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of the RMA, said that on 9 May, russian troops shelled 16 settlements in Kherson oblast, injuring 2 people. 4 private houses and 1 vehicle were damaged.

The RMA informed that 2 more Kherson residents sought medical assistance after their car was attacked by a russian drone on 8 May. A 56-year-old woman and a 58-year-old man suffered blast injuries and concussions.

Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of Zaporizhzhia RMA, reported that 3 boys aged 12 to 16 were evacuated from temporarily occupied areas of Kherson oblast by volunteers from the Save Ukraine charity. Since the beginning of the year, 46 children have been returned from the temporarily occupied left bank of Dnipropetrovsk oblast.

According to the Police, 4 people were evacuated from Beryslav in Kherson oblast. An elderly man injured in a russian drone strike was hospitalised, while 2 women and 1 man were transported to a safe location.

According to the Human Rights Centre, former Kherson Mayor Volodymyr Mykolaenko, who has been held in russian captivity for more than 3 years, was scheduled for a prisoner exchange in 2022 but gave up his place for a critically ill prisoner. He is currently being unlawfully held in Correctional Colony No.7 in Pakino city, Vladimirskaia oblast, russia. It remains unknown whether he has been officially charged or sentenced.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

On 9 May, on the occasion of Europe Day in Ukraine, a patriotic flashmob was held in the lyceums of Novovolynsk community. Students came out to the courtyard of their institutions in white and green clothes – these are the colors that are symbolic for Novovolynsk. During the dance, students performed movements in sync, and the culmination of the flashmob was the formation of a living figure of a chestnut – the city’s logo.

Zakarpattia oblast

This week, the Owl’s Nest Humanitarian Aid Center provided IDPs registered in Uzhgorod with 50 packages with grocery sets and 80 loaves of bread. During the week, volunteers gave out clothes, shoes, bed linen and dishes (1,900 items) from the PDUM Partnerschaft Deutschland-Ukraine/Moldova e. V., Luftfahrt ohne Grenzen / Wings of Help e.V., Spletinnia Kosice, Valentyn Stefano and other benefactors.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

A charity bike ride was held in Ivano-Frankivsk. The goal: to raise funds to buy a car for the soldiers of the 91st Brigade.

Lviv oblast

Nearly 90 volunteers from the UK and Canada have arrived in the oblast to personally deliver 46 SUVs for Ukrainian defense forces. This is the twentieth such convoy as part of British farmer Mark Laird’s Pickups for Peace initiative.

Women from the village of Stariava of Mostyska community raised over UAH 60,000 for the Armed Forces of Ukraine during charity fairs for the 46th Brigade. Over UAH 5,000 for the Armed Forces were raised by residents of the city of Mostyska in the Church of the Ascension of the Lord.

Rivne oblast

A Center for Training the Population for National Resistance will soon be launched in Rivne oblast. 26 instructors have already been identified to train people.

Ternopil oblast

Veteran spaces are being actively created in communities of Ternopil oblast. As of today, 67 veteran support specialists have already been employed in 38 communities of Ternopil oblast.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Khmelnytskyi community sent Dji Matrice 4T quadcopters to the military.

Chernivtsi oblast

The Help for Life Center for Comprehensive Rehabilitation for Persons with Disabilities will now be located in a new building in the village of Luzhany, Mamaievsk community. Thanks to grant funds from German partners, the facility’s premises have been completely renovated. The center’s specialists provide social rehabilitation and adaptation services to children and youth with disabilities.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Emmanuel Macron, French President, Friedrich Merz, German Federal Chancellor, and Keir Starmer and Donald Tusk, Prime Ministers of Great Britain and Poland, arrived in the capital of Ukraine.

British Intelligence has confirmed a slowdown in the pace of russian capture of Ukrainian territory in April. The occupiers captured about 200 sq km, or about 6 sq km per day. According to British intelligence estimates, the main activity of the russian armed forces is concentrated around Pokrovsk, an important logistical hub for Ukrainian forces in Donbas.
