What happened in Ukraine today:
Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 4 pm:
Russian invaders continue to storm the positions of Ukrainian defenders. In return, the Ukrainian Defence Forces are disrupting the enemy’s insidious plans, inflicting significant losses in manpower and equipment.
A total of 99 combat engagements have taken place.
The border settlements continue to suffer from cynical shelling from the territory of the russian Federation, in particular Halahanivka and Prohres in Chernihiv oblast; Tymofiivka in Kharkiv oblast.
Near the settlements of Vovchansk and Starytsia towards Kharkiv, the enemy has tried to break through the defensive lines of our defenders four times since the beginning of the day, two of the engagements are still ongoing.
Towards Kupiansk, the enemy launched seven assault attacks near Petropavlivka, Kolisnykivka, Zahryzove and Lozova. Four of the engagements ended, three are still ongoing.
Towards Lyman, the invading army attacked 17 times near the settlements of Hrekivka, Kopanky, Nadiia, Makiivka, Yampolivka, Zarichne, Terny, Torske and in the directions of Druzheliubivka and Cherneshchyna. Five enemy attacks remained incomplete.
Defence forces repelled one russian attack near Bila Hora towards Kramatorsk.
Towards Toretsk, the enemy attacked five times near the towns of Toretsk and Dyliivka.
Towards Pokrovsk, the occupiers have made 21 attempts to push our defenders from their positions in the areas of Myroliubivka, Promin, Lysivka, Dachanske, Novyi Trud, Zelene, Pishchane, Pokrovsk and Shevchenko since the beginning of the day. The defence forces are holding back the enemy’s offensive and have repelled 14 attacks, seven firefights are still ongoing. The enemy’s losses are being clarified.
Towards Kurakhove, the enemy attacked 14 times near Sontsivka, Stari Terny, Zoria, Kurakhove, Dachne and Dalne. Six combat engagements were completed, eight are still ongoing. In addition, enemy aircraft were active in the area, Ulakly, Oleksiivka and Kostiantynopil were attacked, a total of 13 UAVs were dropped.
Towards Vremivka, the occupiers attacked the positions of our troops 11 times near Veselyi Hai, Kostiantynopil, Rozlyv, Sukhi Yaliv, Blahodatne, Makarivka, in the directions of Novosilka and Zelenyi Pole, six of the engagements are still ongoing. The russians also launched airstrikes on Oleksiivka and Kostiantynopil, using six anti-aircraft gunships.
Towards Orikhiv, the enemy attacked three times in the areas of Novoandriivka and Pyatikhatky.
Towards Kherson, our troops repelled two enemy attacks and the enemy was unsuccessful.
In the operational area in Kursk oblast, the Ukrainian Defence Forces repelled 11 attacks by russian invaders over the course of a day, and three more attacks are ongoing. The enemy made over 110 attacks.
In other frontline areas, the situation did not change significantly.
The Coordination Headquarters commented on the statement of the russian Federation on the transfer to Ukraine of the bodies of prisoners who allegedly died as a result of the downing of the Il-76. As of now, expert institutions are establishing whether the remains of these people really belong to Ukrainian servicemen within the framework of criminal proceedings.
Ombudsman of Ukraine Dmytro Lubinets said that another 5 children and 3 adults were returned to Ukraine. Three teenagers, who recently turned 18, returned home from russia. Upon reaching the age of majority, they decided to return to their native land because they were subjected to pressure and restrictions in russia. One more boy who had lost his family was rescued from the TOT in Zaporizhzhia oblast. In addition, a family of 4 was rescued, two of whose children (11 and 14 years old) were persecuted by the enemy for their pro-Ukrainian position. A 77-year-old woman who was unable to leave the TOT on her own also received assistance. The return to the government-controlled territory of Ukraine took place within the framework of the President’s Bring Kids Back UA programme.
Recent war events in the east of Ukraine
The Ukrainian Armed Forces General Staff said that Ukrainian troops repelled most of the attacks towards Pokrovsk yesterday. Russians tried to advance 51 times near Myroliubivka, Promin, Lysivka, Dachenske, Shevchenko and Chumaky.
The russian occupiers conducted another 40 assaults towards Kurakhove. Fighting was recorded in the areas of Sontsivka, Staryi Terny, Zoria, Dalne, Dachne and Kurakhove.
Russian troops remain active towards Vremivka. Yesterday Ukrainian troops repelled 27 attacks in the direction of Kostiantynopil, Novosilka and near Sukhi Yaliv, Storozheve, Neskuchne and Blahodatne.
Kharkiv oblast
The General Staff reported that Tymofiivka was shelled from the territory of the russian Federation.
Towards Kharkiv, there were four firefights near Vovchansk and Starytsia, two attacks are ongoing as of 4pm.
Towards Kupiansk, the russians conducted seven attacks in the area of Petropavlivka, Kolisnykivka, Zahryzove and Lozova during the day. Four of the attacks were repelled by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, three more are ongoing.
Viktor Kovalenko, Head of Zolochiv community, said that a woman born in 1965 sustained head and face injuries as a result of a russian FPV drone strike on the village of Ivashky in Zolochiv community. The strike took place around 2:40pm.
According to preliminary information, one private house in Ivashky was destroyed and two more were damaged. Outbuildings and power grids were also damaged.
At approximately 9:35am, the occupiers fired three ballistic missiles, probably Iskander-M, at Zlatopil, Lozova region. According to the CMA, the hits were recorded near a banking institution, other non-residential buildings and civilian cars were damaged. A total of 101 people were injured. Among them are three men aged 45, 49, 59 and eight women aged 29 to 62. 9 people were hospitalised.

At 9:34am, Rozhdestviane village of Bohodukhiv region was under russian attack, air defence forces responded to the enemy UAV.
At 9:09am, Kutkivka village of Kupiansk region was under attack from the russian Federation. A house was damaged as a result of hostile shelling.
At 9am, Kupiansk-Vuzlovyi was targeted. A house was destroyed as a result of the shelling.
Towards Kharkiv, russian terrorists unsuccessfully stormed the positions of Ukrainian troops five times near Hlyboke and Vovchansk.
The enemy attacked our fortifications seven times in the Kupyansk sector near Lozova and Zahryzove, with two engagements still ongoing.
As a result of intensified evacuation measures, 58 people were evacuated from Kupiansk and Borove.
In general, the danger of mines remains extremely high in Kharkiv region: 13,000km of power lines, 3,000km of roads, and 570,000 hectares of agricultural land in the region are potentially mined.
More than 300 sappers from various services, primarily specialists from the State Emergency Service and the National Police, are working to clear the area of mines. They are using 24 mechanical demining machines. These capabilities are not enough to quickly survey the area. We are working with international partners to attract additional resources.
Donetsk oblast
The press officer of the 28th separate mechanised brigade named after the Knights of the Winter Campaign, Yevhen Alkhimov, said that near Toretsk, Ukrainian troops launched a successful counterattack and captured several positions. The russian trenches were stormed near Siverskyi Donets-Donbas canal.
Yesterday police documented 2,689 enemy attacks on the frontline and residential areas.
Seven settlements were under attack: Kostiantynivka, Mykolaivka, Myrnohrad, Pokrovsk, Novoekonomichne,Kindrativka and Stara Mykolaivka.
31 civilian objects were damaged, including 13 residential buildings.
Russians hit Mykolaivka with Tornado-S MLRS, killing a civilian and injuring two others. An infrastructure facility was damaged.
The enemy shelled Stara Mykolaivka with artillery, killing a civilian and injuring two others. A shop, 2 civilian cars and a scooter were damaged.
Two people were wounded in Kostiantynivka as a result of an artillery strike. An apartment building, 4 private houses, 2 administrative buildings, 2 shops, a garage, an outbuilding, a gas pipeline and a power line were destroyed.
One person was injured in Novoekonomichne.
Pokrovsk was subjected to artillery attacks – 2 apartment buildings, 5 private houses and two gas pipelines were damaged. One private house was damaged in Myrnohrad.
In Kurakhove, a White Angel crew rescued a seriously injured woman who had come under attack from drones. During the evacuation, the police officers came under heavy fire: their vehicle was damaged and the team, along with civilians, hid in a house that was under russian attack. Despite the danger, law enforcers took the woman to hospital. She survived and is now undergoing treatment.

Nazar Voloshyn, Spokesman of the Khortytsia military unit, reported that towards Kurakhove, russian troops are making significant efforts to align the front line.
Vasyl Chynchyk, Head of the CMA, informed that there are still about 400 residents in Toretsk, where urban fighting continues. These people live in basements and shelters in unsanitary conditions.
Donetskoblhaz said that Pokrovsk will be cut off from gas supply from 12 December. Due to the intensified shelling, it is impossible to restore the networks and gas distribution system.
Luhansk oblast
The invaders are not reducing their ground pressure in the Liman sector. According to the RMA, they attacked in the areas of Hrekivka, Nadiia and Makiivka the day before. These attacks were repelled. The enemy continues to use a large number of unmanned aerial vehicles. Yesterday alone, the russians sent 101 UAVs at our positions. They fired six more times from artillery.
In the occupied Luhansk oblast, the russian authorities have drafted the pseudo-republic’s budget for 2025. Almost two-thirds of the projected revenues will be paid by russia. Their draft budget includes rub 144.8bn in revenues. In addition to own revenues, this figure includes subventions, subsidies, and intergovernmental transfers. Intergovernmental transfers from the russian budget alone are expected to amount to rub 92.6bn. All other components should amount to just over 50bn.
For decades, pro-russian forces have been spreading the myth in the Luhansk region that “Donbas feeds the whole of Ukraine”. In fact, after the seizure, these territories somehow became subsidised – completely dependent on russia.
What is happening now in the north of Ukraine
Kyiv oblast
Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Mihal arrived in Kyiv on 9 December. This is his first visit to Ukraine. He has scheduled meetings with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, and Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Ruslan Stefanchuk.
Rescuers from Bucha region conducted fire and tactical training on the territory of a 16-storey residential building to improve emergency preparedness and practice search and rescue operations. The training scenario involved a simulated hit by an enemy unmanned aerial vehicle, which caused a fire, heavy smoke and partial destruction of structures. Practice on a crank lift, which the rescuers had recently received from representatives of Denmark, was a key part of the training.
Volodymyr Kucherenko, the crew commander of the FPV pilots of the 414th separate regiment “Birds of Magyars”, call sign “Borys”, was commemorated in Kyiv’s St Michael’s Golden-Domed Cathedral. He was killed on 6 December while performing a combat mission in the Pokrovske area of Donetsk oblast. Prior to the full-scale invasion, Volodymyr was the financial director of the Content Analysis Centre as well as an actor performing at the Toteatr Kyiv Theatre.
The RMA reported that 69 centres have been set up in Kyiv oblast to teach “Defence of Ukraine” in a new format for children in grades 10-11. The classes explain how to act during emergencies, evacuations or shelling, provide first aid, fly drones, handle weapons and understand what information warfare is. All lessons are interactive, with a highly practical approach.
One of the high-rise buildings in Dniprovskyi district of the capital was the first to receive the Energy Resilient House of Kyiv award. With the help of the city, the residents installed a solar power plant and inverters – during power outages, the building runs cold and hot water pumps, heating circulation pumps, a lift, lighting in the corridors, and the Internet. According to Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klychko, the capital has four energy resilience programmes for housing associations, under which more than 2,500 projects have already been implemented.
Zhytomyr oblast
Zhytomyr Regional Military Administration announced that a safe educational environment project is being implemented in 6 communities. The pilot programme was developed to ensure that, despite the war, every child could feel safe and every teacher could act effectively in various crisis situations.
In Zhytomyr, specialists are being trained to support female and male veterans. The specialists will provide war veterans with information on government programmes, benefits and services available to them, help them with education and retraining or start their own business.
On 9 December, Zhytomyr will host an event entitled “Creating a Digital Memory of the Fallen in Zhytomyr and the Oblast in 2025”. Representatives of local communities, businesses, foundations, donors, and families of the fallen Heroes are invited to attend. Participants will be able to learn about the results of the project in Ternopil and Lviv oblasts, see real examples of the videos created and, if they wish, join the initiative.
On 9 December, a working meeting was held in Zhytomyr Regional Military Administration with representatives of the Estonian Academy of Electronic Governance and the Centre for Innovation Development. The meeting summed up the results of the project “Improving the Digital Capacity of Administrative Service Centres in Zhytomyr Oblast”.
Sumy oblast
Sumy RMA reported that on the morning of 10 Desember russians carried out shelling Bilopillia community. 5 explosions were recorded.
On 9 Desember, russians carried out 33 shelling attacks on border areas and settlements in Sumy oblast, resulting in 90 explosions. The attacks targeted Khotin, Yunakivka, Bilopillia, Krasnopillia, Esman, Shalyhyne, and Seredyna-Buda communities.
Krasnopillia community: russians dropped 28 minutes on the territory of the community. There was also an attack by FPV-drones (2 explosions), dropping of VOG from UAVs (6 explosions), launch of GAB (1 explosion).
Velyka Pysarivka community: an attack by FPV-drones (1 explosion), mortar shelling (2 explosions).
Seredyna-Buda community: there was a drop of VOG from UAVs (3 explosions), mortar shelling (10 explosions).
Esman community: the enemy hit by artillery (10 explosions).
Shalyhyne community: mortar shelling (4 explosions).
Yunakivka community: artillery shelling (6 explosions) was recorded.
Khotin community: a GAB attack was carried out (4 explosions).
Bilopillia community: the enemy hit by grenade launchers (13 explosions).
Sumy City Council informed that in Sumy, four primary (mobile) shelters are being put into operation as part of a collaborative project between the city council and the administration of Lublin, Poland. The initiative, titled “Modular Shelters – Safety and Protection for Sumy Residents During Airstrikes, Shelling, and Other Threats”, aims to enhance public safety. Electricity has already been connected to two shelters, and the remaining work is expected to be completed by the end of the day.
Chernihiv oblast
On 9 December, russian forces carried out attacks on Semenivka community, using drops from UAVs and FPV-drones. Border guards reported the following incidents:
- Leonivka: three explosions (likely by FPV-drone attacks);
- Kostobobriv: one explosion (likely caused by an explosive device dropped from a UAV);
- Hremiachka: six explosions (likely by FPV-drone attacks);
- Halahanivka: two explosions (likely by FPV-drone attacks).
No casualties or injuries among the civilian population were reported.
Additionally, during the week of 2–8 December, 25 individuals, including four children, evacuated from the border areas of Chernihiv oblast. According to Viacheslav Chaus, Head of Chernihiv Regional Military Administration, over 3,500 people have left the border areas of Chernihiv oblast since the beginning of 2024. Around 1,000 residents remain within the five-kilometer zone from the russian border.
Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine
Dnipropetrovsk oblast
During the night, the enemy twice attacked Nikopol region by artillery, targeting the regional centre and Chervonohryhorivka community. There were no casualties reported.
Throughout the day, the enemy launched 3 kamikaze drone attacks on Nikopol region, targeting the regional centre and Marhanets community. There were no casualties reported.
Vinnytsia oblast
Two memorial plaques to the heroes of the Chervona Kalyna brigade were unveiled in Vinnytsia oblast. They were unveiled in memory of senior soldier Oleksandr Kryvoshapka, who was killed in a firefight in Zaporizhzhia on his birthday. The defender was 26 years old. He was awarded the Order “For Courage”, 3rd class (posthumously) for courage and bravery displayed during the performance of military duty. And senior soldier Pilat Dmytro, who was killed in Zaporizhzhia as a result of a shrapnel munition dropped from an enemy UAV. He was awarded the Order “For Courage”, 3rd class (posthumously) for courage and bravery displayed during the performance of military duty.
Kirovohrad oblast
Kirovohrad oblast mourns the loss of 5 soldiers in the war against russia: Oleh Nastasienko and Artur Lakhauzov from Velykoseverynivka community, Ivan Bielikov from Pryiutivka community, Ivan Fitkalenko from Pidvysoke community and Volodymyr Kucherenko from Oleksandriia community.
Kropyvnytskyi paid tribute to Soldier Oleksandr Sosnovskyi, who was killed on 1 December near Berestky village in Donetsk oblast.
According to recruiter Lesia Nestroina, recruitment has begun in Kropyvnytskyi for the Enei battalion, a unit of the National Police Liut Brigade. The greatest demand is for assault troops and drone operators.
Poltava oblast
A memorial ceremony was held at the Holy Dormition Cathedral for a soldier who was killed in combat on 24 November in Donetsk oblast.
Serhii Khymochka from Myrhorod was killed on 7 December while performing a combat mission on the northeastern front. He was 41 years old.
Vitalii Vynarchuk from Kremenchuk was killed on 30 November, during a combat mission on the northeastern front after a drone dropped an explosive device.
Oleksii Korobko from Pyriatyn community was killed on 4 December near Mykolaivka village in Donetsk oblast while performing a combat mission.
Oleksandr Chaika from Hlobyne community was killed on 17 October 2023, in a battle near Verbove village in Zaporizhzhia oblast.
In Reshetylivka, preparations are underway to open the Alley of Heroes, which will feature portraits of 88 soldiers from the community who have fallen in defence of Ukraine since 2014. The project is funded with over UAH 1m from the community budget. Construction workers are currently completing groundwork and the alley is set to open by the end of 2024.
Cherkasy oblast
In Uman, a memorial ceremony was held for defender Vitalii Chepko, who was killed on 30 January in a fierce battle with russian forces in Avdiivka, Donetsk oblast.
Deputy Mayor Maryna Harkava reported that in Cherkasy, a former kindergarten building is being repurposed into housing for displaced persons. The building, which had been vacant for over 15 years, will accommodate 114 people and feature an elevator and a shelter.
Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine
Zaporizhzhia oblast
Ivan Fedorov, Head of the RMA, reported that a russian missile strike on Zaporizhzhia killed 4 people. As of 8:40pm, the number of injured has risen to 20, including a 5-year-old child. A private clinic was destroyed and nearby buildings damaged.
On 9 December, the russian military launched 313 attacks on 13 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast. These included 157 strikes by UAVs of various types, targeting Zaporizhzhia, Bilenke, Lobkove, Orikhiv, Huliaipole, Novoandriivka, Shcherbaky, Novodanylivka, Mala Tokmachka, Bilohiria, Novodarivka, Malynivka and Olhivske.


Mykolaiv oblast
Vitalii Kim, Head of the RMA, informed that on 9 December, russian forces attacked Kutsurub and Ochakiv communities by FPV drones. There were no casualties or injuries reported.
Odesa oblast
According to the Ukrainian Navy, a naval mine was washed ashore in Odesa oblast. It was safely detonated in a controlled explosion.
Kherson oblast
Referring to the RMA, russian forces shelled Dniprovskyi district of Kherson, injuring a 50-year-old woman who was outside at the time. She sustained a blast injury, concussion and shrapnel wounds to the head.
A 36-year-old resident of Kherson sought medical attention after being struck by a russian drone in Dniprovskyi district earlier in the day. She was hospitalised.
Around 1pm, russian forces attacked Antonivka near Kherson by a drone. A 67-year-old man near his house was injured and hospitalised.
The russian forces dropped explosives from a drone in Kherson, injuring 2 men. Another drone attack targeted Kindiika, injuring a woman. All victims were hospitalised.
In Antonivka, russian forces again dropped explosives from a drone, injuring a 48-year-old man. He was hospitalised with blast injuries and an open head trauma.
Russian forces dropped explosives from a UAV in Antonivka, injuring an 82-year-old woman and a 78-year-old man, both of whom were hospitalised with blast injuries and leg wounds.
According to the Prosecutor’s Office, around 6am, russian forces attacked Odradokamianka in Kherson oblast by a drone, killing a 74-year-old woman.
Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of the RMA, stated that on 9 December, russian forces shelled 31 settlements in Kherson oblast, killing 1 person and injuring 1. The shelling damaged 3 apartment buildings, 8 private houses and vehicles.
Relying on the information provided by the National Resistance Centre, the occupation administration announced plans to create a landfill near Oleshky Sands in the temporarily occupied territory of Kherson oblast.

Volyn oblast
On the territory of Volyn and Rivne oblast, the air alarm may sound more often. All because of military exercises in belarus. They will last until 31 December.
Lutsk City Territorial Community sent 3 DJI Mavic 3 Pro RC quadcopters and 2 EcoFlow Delta2 charging stations to the 10th Separate Border Operational Response Unit Dozor. The Company of the Unmanned Aerial Systems of the Military Unit A 4599 received 2 DJI Mavic 3 T Enterprise quadcopters and a set of Avanger remote antennas. The Military Unit A 4919 will receive a Sinytsia 3.5K electronic warfare tool.
Zakarpattia oblast
There are two recruiting centers of the Ukrainian army in Uzhhorod and Mukachevo. In these centers you can get information about available vacancies in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Recruiters advise on the conclusion of a contract for military service or the possibility of entering the selected unit in the event of mobilization.
Ivano-Frankivsk oblast
Eight soldiers of the Svoboda National Guard battalion fought continuously for 67 days surrounded by the enemy. They stopped the Russian offensive. A film about these events was presented today in Ivano-Frankivsk. Petro Kuzyk, the commander of the “Freedom” battalion, and the military also came to talk about the battles and bravery of our brothers who defend Ukraine.
Lviv oblast
A free 10-day training course RESTART: From an Idea to a Veteran Business has started for patients of the UNBROKEN center. Here, participants will be able to understand the basics of entrepreneurship and marketing, as well as develop their business ideas.
The RMA held the 8th industry meeting within the regional platform Government and Business Dialogue initiated by the President of Ukraine. Among the issues discussed: the criteria for booking conscripts and the criteria for receiving enterprises to receive criticality status.
A holiday program was organized for the children of military personnel together with the My Dad Protects Ukraine CF within the Travel Therapy project. 48 people took part in the trip: children and wives of servicemen, dead and missing soldiers.
Rivne oblast
On the territory of Rivne and Volyn oblast, the air alarm may sound more often. All because of military exercises in belarus. They will last until 31 December.
Ternopil oblast
A memorial plaque was opened in Ternopil in honor of defender Serhii Trishkaliuk. A memorial sign was installed on the facade of the house where the Hero lived since birth.
Khmelnytskyi oblast
Khmelnytskyi community sent 200 FPV drones worth UAH 2.2m to the Defense Forces. Since the beginning of the year, the community has sent 6,700 different FPV drones, over 610 UAVs (copters, airplanes, drones, autels, mattresses) and over 170 EW and REP devices.
Chernivtsi oblast
Khotynska and Sokyrianska urban territorial communities received 2 specialized vehicles. Vehicles were purchased within the framework of the UN Development Program in Ukraine under the EU4 Recovery project with the financial support of the EU. Cars will be used to implement the social service Care at Home and In-Kind Assistance.
International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)
The World Bank will provide Ukraine with $454m for the development of the health care sector. The funds will be transferred within the framework of the THRIVE project, which is aimed at helping to reform the health care system and increase its effectiveness in wartime conditions. The program is financed by Japan, the World Bank, as well as a grant from the URTF fund.
The Council of the EU approved another payment to Ukraine within the framework of the Ukraine Facility initiative in the amount of €4.2bn, which will arrive this month. Together with these funds, this year’s total assistance under this initiative will amount to €16bn.
Ukrainian audio guides are now available in Latin America. After Lima (Peru) and Sao Paulo, Brazil, they became available in Mexico and Argentina. So, there are already 91 Ukrainian-language audio guides in 49 countries of the world.
