What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

The city council announced that a donor day will be held in Bucha on 12 March. The collected blood will be donated to military and civilian patients. According to the announcement, one donation can save several lives, so anyone who wishes to do so can join in and do an important thing. Those wishing to donate will be welcomed from 9:00 a.m. at the Bucha Consultative and Diagnostic Centre.

Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klychko announced that Anne Lindbø, Mayor of Oslo, Norway, had visited Kyiv. According to him, Oslo will soon send a batch of generators to Kyiv to help the city.

On 9 March, an art event called ‘Anthem of Ukraine’s Indestructibility 2022-2026’ took place in Kyiv near the Maidan Nezalezhnosti metro station. Musicians from the Kyiv Classic orchestra took part in the event. The event was timed to coincide with the fourth anniversary of the first initiative by artists who appealed to the international community at the beginning of the full-scale russian invasion of Ukraine. The orchestra played with the same incomplete line-up as in 2022.. 

Zhytomyr oblast

The Air Force Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that on the afternoon of 9 March, while performing a combat mission in the eastern direction, the commander of the 39th Tactical Aviation Brigade, stationed in the Zhytomyr oblast, Hero of Ukraine Colonel Oleksandr Dovgach, was killed. According to the statement, Oleksandr Dovhach carried out his combat mission at the cost of his own life, despite the significant superiority of the enemy’s air force and powerful countermeasures by russian air defence systems.

The State Emergency Service of Zhytomyr oblast reported that pyrotechnicians neutralized ammunition from World War II, which Zhytomyr residents found in a water park. The dangerous discovery was taken by sappers to a specially designated place and destroyed through controlled detonation.

Sumy oblast

The Territorial Defence Zone Headquarters reported that over the past week, units of the Defence Forces destroyed or suppressed 632 enemy UAVs in the skies over Sumy oblast using electronic warfare systems. Among them were 583 strike drones and 49 reconnaissance UAVs.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs informed that towards Northern Sloboda and Kursk, border guards of the RUBpAK “Aquila” unit of “Steel Border” brigade destroyed at least eight enemy shelters, a field fuel and lubricants depot, a vehicle and a communications antenna of the occupying forces.

According to the Regional Military Administration, during the day on 9 March, the enemy struck energy infrastructure facilities in the oblast and attempted to leave settlements in Sumy oblast without electricity. Interruptions in electricity supply are possible in settlements of Sumy and Okhtyrka regions, and some consumers remain temporarily without power. Energy workers and emergency crews are working to restore electricity supply.

The State Emergency Service of Sumy oblast reported that on 9 March, russian forces struck the outskirts of Sumy city. The attack caused a fire in a warehouse facility. Due to the threat of repeated strikes, rescuers were forced several times to suspend operations and move to a safe location. All fire outbreaks were extinguished.

Serhii Kryvosheienko, Head of Sumy City Military Administration, said that on the evening of 8 March, the russian army attacked the private sector on the outskirts of Sumy by a UAV. The homeowners — a 74-year-old man and a 73-year-old woman — were injured. Three private houses and outbuildings were damaged.

The Regional Military Administration informed that over the past day on 8 March, five people were injured as a result of russian attacks in Sumy oblast. In Sumy community, a 74-year-old man and women aged 64 and 73 were injured in enemy UAV attacks. In Nova Slobidka community, men aged 61 and 70 were injured in a drone strike.

From the morning of 8 March to the morning of 9 March, russian forces carried out more than 50 attacks on 28 settlements across 13 territorial communities of the oblast. The highest number of attacks was recorded in Sumy and Shostka regions. The enemy used mortars, artillery, FPV drones, UAVs and guided aerial bombs. Air raid alerts in the oblast lasted 21 hours over the past day.

Civilian infrastructure facilities were damaged and destroyed:

  • In Znob-Novhorodske community, a private residential house was damaged;
  • In Berezivka community, a civilian infrastructure facility was damaged;
  • In Sumy community, a civilian infrastructure facility, non-residential premises, private residential houses, outbuildings and a passenger vehicle were damaged;
  • In Nova Slobidka community, a private residential house was damaged;
  • In Krasnopillia community, a private passenger vehicle was damaged;
  • In Myropillia community, a private residential house was damaged.

Chernihiv oblast

Viacheslav Chaus, Head of Chernihiv Regional Military Administration, reported that over the past week, from 2 to 8 March, the Defence Forces of Ukraine shot down 55 russian strike drones in the skies over Chernihiv oblast. According to him, russian forces mainly use FPV drones for attacks, but during the week they also carried out strikes by Heran, Herbera and Molniia-type UAVs.

Viacheslav Chaus, Head of Chernihiv RMA, said that during the day on 8 March, russian forces struck businesses in Snovsk and Mena communities by Herbera-type UAVs, as well as an agricultural enterprise in Chernihiv region. Drone strikes on villages of Koriukivka community damaged an energy facility, leaving a number of houses without electricity. An FPV drone strike also damaged the roof and windows of a residential house.

Chernihiv Border Guard Detachment informed that during the day on 8 March, russian forces attacked four border communities of Chernihiv oblast: Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka, Horodnia and Snovsk. The enemy carried out mortar shelling (13 explosions) and tube artillery strikes (15 explosions), launched FPV drones (20 explosions), and dropped explosive devices from UAVs (10 explosions). Fifteen settlements were under enemy fire.

According to the State Emergency Service, in Chernihiv oblast, sappers discovered part of a russian missile in an open area of Nizhyn region. Specialists inspected the site, identified the missile fragments and transported them with a specialised pyrotechnic vehicle to a designated location for further disposal.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

12 enemy UAVs were destroyed in the sky over the oblast.

Nikopol region. In the morning, the occupiers struck Pokrovske rural community by FPV drones. Infrastructure and an enterprise were damaged.

Samar region. As a result of a UAV attack in Hubynyha community, a fire broke out.

Nikopol region. The russian forces continued attacking Nikopol region by drones and artillery. They targeted the regional centre, Pokrovske rural, Myrove, Marhanets and Chervonohryhorivka communities.

In Nikopol, a married couple was injured as a result of a drone strike — a 66-year-old woman and a 69-year-old man. They received medical assistance. 2 private houses, a vehicle, an agricultural enterprise, other enterprises and a sports club were damaged.

Synelnykove region. The russian forces struck Mezhova and Petropavlivka communities by UAVs. A 68-year-old man was injured. A garage caught fire, and an enterprise was damaged.

Kryvyi Rih region. Drones targeted Zelenodolsk and Apostolove communities. Infrastructure was damaged.

Kirovohrad oblast

In Kirovohrad oblast, the release from russian captivity of 38-year-old Yurii Fedorenko from Lystopadove village in Novomyrhorod community was confirmed. The soldier had been in captivity for 2 years and almost 7 months. He returned to Ukraine during a prisoner exchange on 6 March.

2 communities in Kirovohrad oblast held memorial ceremonies for soldiers killed in the war for Ukraine: Serhii Liubchenko from Blahovishchenske city and Dmytro Bohza from Novoukrainka city.

Serhii Liubchenko, 44, was killed on 28 February in Kharkiv oblast.

Dmytro Bohza stopped communicating in October and had been considered missing in action. Following forensic examination, it was established that he was killed on 13 October 2024, while carrying out a combat mission near Maksymilianivka village in Marinka community of Pokrovsk region.

Poltava oblast

Servicemen Maksym Kozubenko from Kremenchuk and Oleksandr Nikolenko from Khorol territorial community were killed.

Maksym Kozubenko was killed on 4 March 2026.

Oleksandr Nikolenko was killed on 1 March 2026, while serving in Kharkiv oblast.

In Poltava, a memorial ceremony was held for soldier Serhii Huzii, who was killed on 16 October 2025, as a result of explosives dropped by a russian FPV drone. The incident occurred in Kharkiv oblast.

Cherkasy oblast

In Talne, a memorial ceremony was held for serviceman Yaroslav Yakymenko. He was 42 years old. He died on 5 March 2026, in a medical facility.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration reported that yesterday, 8 March, the occupiers carried out 805 strikes on 36 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast. russian forces conducted 18 airstrikes on Komyshuvakha, Veselianka, Barvynivka, Novoukrainka, Yurkivka, Orikhiv, Vozdvyzhivka, Verkhnia Tersa, Kopani, Zahirne, Huliaipilske, and Charivne. 556 UAVs of various types (mostly FPV drones) attacked Chervonodniprovka, Bilenke, Mykhailivka, Novooleksandrivka, Shyroke, Lysohirka, Stepnohirsk, Prymorske, Lukianivske, Pavlivka, Orikhiv, Huliaipole, Zaliznychne, Shcherbaky, Novoandriivka, Novodanylivka, Mala Tokmachka, Bilohiria, Myrne, Charivne, Sviatopetrivka, Staroukrainka, Zelene, Varvarivka, Dobropillia, and Nove Zaporizhzhia. There were six MLRS strikes on Stepnohirsk, Novoandriivka, Mala Tokmachka, Myrne, Sviatopetrivka, and Verkhnia Tersa. 225 artillery strikes hit Stepnohirsk, Prymorske, Lukianivske, Pavlivka, Orikhiv, Huliaipole, Zaliznychne, Shcherbaky, Novoandriivka, Novodanylivka, Mala Tokmachka, Bilohiria, Sviatopetrivka, Staroukrainka, Varvarivka, Dobropillia, and Nove Zaporizhzhia. Twenty-nine reports were received about damage to homes, cars, and infrastructure facilities. Three people were injured as a result of enemy attacks in the Zaporizhzhia and Polohy regions.

According to the General Staff, as of 16:00 on 9 March, 13 attacks took place n the areas of Myrne, Luhivske, Zaliznychne and Olenokostiantynivka towards Huliaipole. Eleven attacks were already repelled. One combat engagement took place near Prymorske towards Orikhiv. Over the past day, 8 March, the Defense Forces repelled 19 russian attacks towards Huliaipole direction and one more towards Orikhiv.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that on the night of 9 March, the Defense Forces of Ukraine struck command and observation posts of the russian army in Zaporizhzhia oblast. In particular, the Defense Forces hit russian command and observation posts near Zaporizke, Chervonoselivka, and Hoholivka in Zaporizhzhia oblast. The scale and consequences of the damage are being clarified.

Mykolaiv oblast

Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration reported that over the past day, 8 March, one Shahed-131/136 attack UAV was shot down or suppressed in Mykolaiv oblast.

Odesa oblast

Odesa Regional Military Administration reported that a 62-year-old man who had been injured during the enemy shelling of Odesa oblast on 4 March died in the hospital. The man worked at a railway station.

According to the press service of the “South” Air Command, on the evening of 8 March, russian troops struck Odesa oblast with two Iskander-M ballistic missiles. They were launched from the territory of temporarily occupied Crimea. According to the command, as of 9:30, over the course of the day the air defense forces of southern Ukraine shot down 45 Shahed and Gerbera drones, 37 attack drones of other types, and three reconnaissance UAVs.

The press service of the Southern Regional Directorate of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine reported that during the night of 9 March, border guards shot down four unmanned.

As part of the prisoner exchange on 6 March, Mykola Smokov, a resident of the town of Katlabuh in Odesa oblast, returned to Ukraine. The serviceman had been considered missing since 20 July, 2023.

Kherson oblast

Kherson Regional Military Administration reported that in the morning the occupiers directed a drone at a residential multi-story building. The strike damaged the facade, balconies, and shattered several dozen windows. A woman was also injured.

At around 13:00 russian troops deliberately struck a residential building in Korabelnyi district of Kherson. The attack caused a fire.

At approximately 10:40 russians again attacked Dniprovskyi district of Kherson with a UAV. As a result of the strike, a 61-year-old man and a 54-year-old woman sustained blast injuries and shrapnel wounds to their limbs.

Around 09:15, a woman was injured in a russian drone attack on Dniprovskyi district of Kherson. The 35-year-old Kherson resident was diagnosed with a blast injury and shrapnel wounds to the face. Also, a 91-year-old woman sustained a blast injury and shrapnel wounds to the chest and arm.

Around 09:00 russian forces attacked Dniprovskyi district of Kherson with a UAV. A 58-year-old woman sustained a blast injury and shrapnel wounds to the abdomen.

Medical assistance was also needed for a 58-year-old man who was injured at around 15:40 today during a russian drone attack in the central part of Kherson. He sustained a blast injury and a concussion.

Two residents of Kherson sought medical care after being injured during the russian shelling of Dniprovskyi district on 7 March. A 52-year-old woman and a 56-year-old man were diagnosed with blast injuries and concussions.

A resident of Bilozerka sought medical help after being injured during a russian attack on the afternoon of 5 March. The 43-year-old man was hospitalized with a blast injury and a concussion.

Police of Kherson oblast reported that yesterday, 8 March, the russian forces attacked Kherson, Antonivka, Bilozerka, Romashkove, Dniprovske, Veletynske, Inzhenerne, Sofiivka, Kizomys, Sadove, Prydniprovske, Novodmytrivka, Stanislav, Oleksandrivka, Shyroka Balka, Beryslav, Zolota Balka, Shevchenkivka, Ukrainka, Bila Krynytsia, Novovorontsovka, Osokorivka, Kozatske, and Vesele. As a result of the shelling, one apartment building and eight private houses, a critical infrastructure facility, an educational institution, a printing house, and a cargo and passenger vehicle were damaged. One person was injured as a result of russian aggression.

Kherson police evacuated an elderly couple. The couple had left the regional center on their own and were walking along a road toward a safer area. They could no longer remain in the city, which the enemy shells around the clock with all available weapons, and needed evacuation. A police evacuation group immediately arrived at the scene. Officers helped the family get into an armored vehicle and transported them to a safer location.

The head of the regional military administration, Oleksandr Prokudin, reported that over the course of a week Ukrainian fighters destroyed 3,039 drones used by russian forces to attack settlements in Kherson oblast. Of these, 1,560 were within the Kherson community. In total, russian occupiers used 3,161 UAVs for attacks, including 1,621 within the Kherson community.

The Ministry for Communities and Territories Development of Ukraine reported that 46 children, along with their parents or legal guardians, will be forcibly evacuated from four settlements in Stanislav and Kherson communities. Since 1 June, 2025, more than 178,000 people were evacuated from frontline territories of Ukraine to safer regions, including more than 23,000 children and over 6,000 people with limited mobility.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

Despite the fact that the current heating season is still ongoing, Volyn RMA has already started preparations for the next period of 2026–2027. The total amount of funding for the Resilience Plan is UAH 2.87bn, of which over UAH 124m has already been secured.

Zakarpattia oblast

The RMA held a meeting with representatives of the Norwegian company Malthe Winje Group. They discussed development of renewable energy sources, investments in green projects, and contribution to the restoration of Ukraine’s energy system.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast continues to receive people who were forced to leave their homes due to the war. An evacuation train from Donetsk oblast arrived in the oblast. 12 people were sheltered by the Kolomyia, Mateivetsia and Kosiv communities. People were accommodated free of charge in temporary accommodation, where proper conditions and support were provided.

Lviv oblast

Lviv Regional Emergency Medical Center continues to fulfill its vital mission – the evacuation of Ukrainians for treatment abroad. Today, Lviv oblast remains the only oblast in Ukraine whose EMD facility centrally carries out such international medical transportation. Results of the MEDEVAC project for February: 87 patients (and 32 accompanying persons) were successfully transported to foreign clinics; 31 patients (and 9 accompanying persons) were repatriated home after completing the course of therapy; in total, ambulance crews made 60 trips.

Rivne oblast

Last year, 416 boys and girls from Rivne oblast recovered at the Artek international children’s center. Priority in allocating vouchers is given to children of military personnel, disabled children, orphans and IDPs.

Ternopil oblast

Specialists from Ternopil Blood Center worked in Zbarazh. As a result of the field campaign, the blood bank was replenished with 29 donors, which allowed collecting over 13 liters of blood.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Khmelnytskyi community sent 27 DJI Matrice 4T quadcopters worth over UAH 5.2m to the military.

Chernivtsi oblast

Chernivtsi said goodbye to Mykhailo Klapatiuk, soldier of the Military Unit A4349. The Hero was killed while performing a combat mission in Sumy oblast.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Rob Yetten, Prime Minister of the Netherlands, stated that the country and Ukraine have agreed to increase joint arms production. Amsterdam intends to scale up the production of drones.
