War in Ukraine today: latest news, 09 June, 2024 (photo)

It has been the 837th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression.

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6.30 pm:   

The total number of enemy attacks along the entire length of the front was 62. Currently, the aggressor continues to use aviation and attack in several directions, most actively towards Pokrovsk. Ukrainian defenders are firmly holding the line.

Towards Kupiansk, the occupiers became more active in the vicinity of Pishchane and Nevske, increasing the number of attempts to improve their own positions to nine.

Towards Lyman, russian forces also attacked in the vicinity of Hrekivka . In total, the aggressor tried to attack there six times. Serebrianka forest, Novosadove, Novoiehorivka and Petropavlivka were attacked with guided aerial bombs.

Towards Kramatorsk, there were nine clashes. Fighting continues in the vicinity Kalynivka.

Towards Pokrovsk, the greatest activity of the enemy is currently maintained Clashes of varying intensity took place here 23 times. Currently, fighting continues in the vicinity of Novooleksandrivka, Novoselivka Persha and Novopokrovske. During the day, the occupiers’ aircraft hit Skuchne, Novooleksandrivka, Vozdvyzhenka and Ivanivka. Five attempts by the russian aggressors to improve their own positions are still ongoing.

In other areas, the situation has not changed significantly.

The defense forces continue to repel the enemy and inflict maximum losses on the entire front line.


Referring to the Main Directorate of Intelligence, on 8 June, a Su-57 multirole fighter of the aggressor state was hit on the territory of Akhtubinsk airfield in Astrakhan oblast of the russian federation. The Su-57 is russia’s most modern fighter jet, capable of using Kh-59 and Kh-69 missiles for strikes. 

Serhiy Golubtsov, Head of aviation of the Air Force Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, informs that the Armed Forces of Ukraine will begin testing Ukrainian-made guided aerial bombs.  So far, the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine uses Western-made KABs.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Oleh Syniehubov, Head of Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, reported that the invaders hit Kharkiv with a KAB in an open area between private houses. According to the latest information from the mayor, Ihor Terekhov, four private houses, a fence, a garage and one car were damaged by the attack. It happened in Kyivskyi district of the city.

On 9 June at 12:35am, a man was injured as a result of shelling in Borova village, Izium region.

The day before, at 6pm, a woman was injured as a result of hostile shelling in Dvorichanske village, Kupiansk region.

At 4:33pm, a house and a garage burned down as a result of shelling in Nova Kozacha village, Derhachi community, Kharkiv region.

At 3:58pm, as a result of the shelling of Khotimlia village, Staryi Saltiv, Chuhuiv region, an educational institution was damaged and the school building destroyed. A shop, the building of the village council, two private houses were damaged, a man killed and two women wounded.

At 11am, a private enterprise was damaged as a result of the shelling of Kupiansk. The roof of the boiler room was burning.

At 9:21am, as a result of shelling of Ruski Tyshky village, Tsyrkuny community, Kharkiv region, the windows, roof and facade of the outpatient clinic building were damaged.

Towards Kharkiv, four enemy attacks were repelled near Lyptsi, Hlyboke and Vovchansk since the beginning of the day.

Towards Kupiansk, 8 russian attacks were repelled near Synkivka, Pishchane, Andriivka, Hrekivka and Makiivka. The situation is tense and the battle near Nevske continues. The defence forces are taking measures to stabilise the situation.

Donetsk oblast

According to the General Staff, towards Kurakhove, Ukrainian troops destroyed two russian tanks and damaged three more. The Ukrainian Defence Forces also neutralised 38 russian troops in this area, 13 of them were irrecoverable losses.

Nazar Voloshyn, Head of the Khortytsia operational-strategic group, reported that towards Pokrovsk, Ukrainian troops repelled 36 attacks. This section of the frontline is the “hottest on the entire frontline”, with about 220 engagements taking place here last week. Ukrainian troops are holding back the offensive of 3-4 russian brigades in this area.

The regional Prosecutor’s Office informed that in Lyman community, the identities of 47 people, who died or were killed during the occupation in 2022, have not yet been established. The bodies were found in mass and individual graves after the community was liberated from the invaders in autumn 2022.

Pomsta brigade said that in Serebrianka gorest, border guards destroyed an ammunition depot and two occupiers’ hideouts.

200 houses damaged by shelling by russian troops will be repaired in Donetsk and Kharkiv oblasts by representatives of the Luhansk Association of Organisations of People with Disabilities. The project is funded by foreign donors. They will be repairing houses located 30km from the front line, and are currently working in Sloviansk.

The operational situation in the oblast as of the morning of 9 June is as follows:

Towards Kramatorsk, Yampil, Yampolivka, Terny and Zarichne of Lyman community were shelled. In Kostiantynivka community, 11 houses were damaged: 6 in Markove and 5 in Mykolaivka. In Berestka of Illinivka community, 8 objects were damaged.

Towards Bakhmut, in Toretsk community, 1 person was killed and 3 houses damaged in Niu-York; 1 person was injured and 1 house damaged in Pivnichne; 4 houses were damaged in Nelipivka. In Chasiv Yar community, 8 private houses and 4 apartment buildings were damaged. A house was destroyed in Siversk.

In total, russians attacked settlements in Donetsk oblast 11 times over the day. 67 people, including 8 children, were evacuated from the frontline.

Vadym Filashkin, Head of Donetsk Regional Military Administration, reported that russians killed 1 civilian in Niu-York. Two more people were injured in the oblast over the  day

Luhansk oblast

The invaders attacked Nevske, Stelmakhivka and Kuzemivka with mortars and cannon artillery. They attacked Nevske and Kuzemivka with multiple rocket launchers. They shelled Novoyehorivka with unguided aerial missiles.

The invaders stormed the positions of the Ukrainian military near Andriivka, Hrekivka, Makiivka and Nevske.

Towards Kupiansk, 87 invaders were killed and injured over the day. An armoured combat vehicle, a vehicle and an enemy anti-tank missile system were destroyed.

According to Luhansk Regional Military Administration, the territories of four oblasts and the Autonomous Republic of Crimea occupied by russia are going to be united into a federal district. Locals are not even offered to choose a name for it, as there is only one option, Novorossiia (New russia). However, it should be noted that at the legislative level, federal districts are not subjects of the russian federation and are not provided for in the russian Constitution. They are simply considered to be administrative-territorial units of a new type – without legal status.

Artem Lysohor, Head of the RMA, from 1 July, the so-called “lpr” is going to raise prices for housing and communal services by 30%, they call it indexation.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

Bucha Mayor Anatoliy Fedoruk announced that South Korea will help Kyiv oblast develop an industrial zone and set up a water supply system. This initiative was discussed recently during a visit to the community by the management of the K-water company from South Korea. Last year Bucha signed a memorandum with foreign partners on cooperation in the development of Bucha Techno Garden industrial zone.

Vadym Tokar, Head of Makarivka village, announced that the owners of the destroyed housing purchased 112 apartments and houses under the state programme ‘eRestoration’. A total of 229 people, who applied to the Diia and provided all the necessary documents, received certificates for their destroyed property compensation. It is noted that 1,183 people have already received UAH 107.3 million in compensation for the repair of damaged housing under the state programme.

The regional State Emergency Service announced that this week, specialists of the Rescue Service held a masterclass on the conditional rescue of a victim in a fire in a high-rise building in Bila Tserkva. 

During the summer, camps to make up for educational losses will be held in 35 educational institutions of Bucha region, implemented jointly with the NGO GO GLOBAL.

A presentation of the documentary film On the Brink: The Story of the Unbreakable Edge of a Frontline Newspaper Editor, created by the information service of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine, took place in Kyiv. The film tells the story of a frontline newspaper from Zolochiv, Kharkiv oblast, and its editor-in-chief Vasyl Myroshnyk, who prints the newspaper in Kharkiv under threat and personally delivers it to the border with russia to inform Ukrainians. Media professionals from Kherson, Mykolaiv, Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia oblasts were invited to the screening. 

Zhytomyr oblast

In Zhytomyr oblast, two religious communities moved to the OCU – the villages of Novyny of Kurnia community and Rohachiv of the Baraniv community. After the general meeting, the religious communities decided to withdraw from subordination to the moscow Patriarchate without their rectors.

Children actors from Alina Zubova’s theatre studio in Zhytomyr premiered the play Toy Story to raise money for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The studio’s theatre performances continue to raise the necessary amount of money.

Sumy oblast

 At night and in the morning of 9 June, russian forces attacked the border areas of Sumy oblast twice.There were 11 mortar attacks on Esman community.

Sumy RMA reported that over the past day, the russian military attacked Sumy oblast 26 times, there were 59 attacks with various types of weapons. 11 communities were shelled: Mykolayivka, Khotin, Bilopillia, Krasnopillia, Seredina-Buda, Znob-Novhorodske, Shalyhyne, Esman, Velyka Pysarivka, Krolevets, Nova Sloboda. 

A Roma educational centre was opened in Sumy, where children and women of the Roma community will get the knowledge they missed at school, learn to read and write. The centre was opened in Baranivka, which is home to the Roma community in Sumy. 

Chernihiv oblast

Over the past day, russian troops attacked three communities in Chernihiv oblast. According to the State Border Guard Service, there were 59 explosions, including mortar attacks, cannon artillery and FPV drone drops. The settlements of Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka and Snovsk communities were under enemy fire.

According to Chernihiv police,  on 8 June, the russian military fired on civilians in Novhorod-Siverskyi region. A number of residential buildings in the centre of the village came under attack. As a result of the shelling, one residential building was completely destroyed, and four more heavily damaged. The artillery also affected agricultural machinery.

In Novhorod-Siverskyi, the community paid tribute to Serhii Didovskyi, civilian hostage of the russian military from Kamianska Sloboda. On 23 March 2022, the man was taken from his home by russians when their equipment was moving through Chernihiv oblast, and in early April 2024, he was returned to Ukraine dead. The man was helping the Ukrainian Armed Forces by collecting and passing on information about the movements of russian columns to the Ukrainian military.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk,  Head of Dnipropetrovsk oblast Council, reports that the occupiers launched a kamikaze drone on Pokrovsk community. In the morning, the enemy attacked the area 7 more times. They fired drones and artillery at Nikopol and Myrove community. 5 private houses, a utility company, a garage and a power line were damaged.

During the day, the enemy struck Nikopol region about a dozen times. Kamikaze drones were launched and the area was shelled with artillery. They targeted Nikopol, Chervonohryhorivka and Myrove communities. A high-rise building, infrastructure facilities, 3 private houses, 2 outbuildings, a garage, a shop, and a power line were damaged. 

Kirovohrad oblast

In the village of Karlivka, a park was set up in memory of soldier Serhii Havrylenko, who was killed in action. It was created on the initiative and at the expense of his wife Hanna Havrylenko. 

Poltava oblast

In Kremenchuk, a reminder action “Don’t be silent. Captivity kills” was held in support of prisoners of war of Mariupol garrison, all prisoners and missing persons. It was arranged by the families of prisoners of war.

Cherkasy oblast

A rally in support of prisoners of war was held in Cherkasy. Citizens, military families, public figures, and volunteers lined the road with flags and posters to remind them of the defenders who are currently in captivity.

Cherkasy hosted the festival “Strong Family – Invincible Ukraine”. More than half a thousand people took part in it. The holiday was held to promote family values and raise funds for military equipment for the 118th Territorial Defense Brigade.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Ivan Fedorov, Head of Zaporizhzhya Regional Military Administration reported that on 8 June, the russian army carried out 429 strikes on eight towns and villages in Zaporizhzhia oblast. 181 drones of various modifications attacked Huliaipole, Zaliznychne, Malynivka, Sviatopetrivka, Levadne, Robotyne, Mala Tokmachka, Novoandriivka. There were no casualties.

According to the South Operation Command, towards Orikhiv ten attacks were repelled by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. 

Mykolaiv oblast

Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration said that on 8 June, at 12:20am, the russian army shelled  Kutsurub community with artillery. There were no casualties. 

On 9 June, a peaceful reminder action Do not be silent! Captivity Kills! was held in Mykolaiv. Among the participants were relatives and friends of prisoners and missing persons. 150 people attended the event.

Odesa oblast

3 Tu-95MS were redeployed from the Engels-2 airbase to the Olenya airfield. It is likely that all of these aircraft are equipped with X-101/555 missiles and are already on standby. 

russian troops deployed the Varshavyanka submarine with 2 Kalibr missiles into the Black Sea. At present, 3 surface ships with a total volley of 28 missiles continue to be at sea.

Kherson oblast

On the morning of 9 June, the russian army shelled Oleksandrivka in Stanislav community. A 53-year-old woman was injured in the shelling. 

Kherson Military Regional Administration reported that Havrylivka, Beryslav, Zmiivka, Tomyna Balka, Bilozirka, Burhunka, Respublika, Dudchany, Antonivka, Tokarivka, Veletynske, Mykhailivka, Ivanivka, Chaikyne, Sadove and the city of Kherson came under hostile fire and air strikes. 13 private houses were damaged. 1 person was killed and 4 injured. 

Many private houses and apartments in Kherson were damaged by the russian army shelling. Ten families in Kherson received assistance from the City of Power NGO. Kherson Regional Municipal Emergency Rescue Service HOKARS provided the organisation with materials and battery-powered tools that allowed them to work even without electricity.

Another safety classroom for children was opened on the basis of a secondary school in Kherson oblast. It is divided into several zones, each of which is equipped with the necessary materials to teach fire safety, first aid, road safety and mine safety. Thanks to the support of UNICEF, there is a psychological relief zone where children can draw and communicate.

A new local fire department was opened in Beryslav region. The unit received modern equipment that allows it to effectively fight fires and provide assistance in various emergency situations. Employees have undergone the necessary training and are ready to perform their duties.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

Lutsk City Council reported that the community sent 25 DartBee 10, 25 DartBee 7, 2 DJI Mavic 3 and a DJI Mavic 3T quadcopters to the A 4100 Military Unit.

Zakarpattia oblast

The RMA reported that the oblast sent an all-terrain vehicle to the policemen who are following the front as part of the combat units of the National Police.

Cooperation between the regional council and the Caritas CF of the Czech Republic continues. Currently, with the funds of philanthropists, repair work is being carried out in the 4-story building of the dormitory in Berehovo, where it is planned to house 200 IDP by the end of the year. They also visited the construction of a modular town in Neresnytsk community, Tiachiv region. 10 houses have already been assembled here, the final stage is the improvement of the territory, the issue of installing a water supply and drainage system is being resolved.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Carpathian sappers continue to clear Ukrainian lands of enemy mines. Another rotation in Donetsk oblast has been going on since mid-April. During this time, sappers from Ivano-Frankivsk oblast demined 45 hectares of liberated territories. In total, since the beginning of the full-scale war, the Carpathian pyrotechnics have carried out 26 rotations. They worked in liberated territories of Kyiv, Kharkiv, Mykolaiv, Kherson and Donetsk oblasts. During this time, over 2,600 hectares were examined and almost 6,000 explosive objects were neutralised.

Lviv oblast

At the base of the Lviv shooting range of the School of Higher Sports Mastery an open training in bench shooting for veterans was held as part of the League of the Invincibles project. Over 40 people from among military veterans recovering at the Complex Rehabilitation Center Halychyna, the Unbroken rehabilitation centre, Lviv Regional Hospital for War Veterans and Repressed People named after Yurii Lipa, and others took part in the training, as well as members of their families. As part of the event, participants were instructed in safety techniques and taught how to fire smooth bore weapons at targets.

Volodymyr Levytskyi, soldier from Mykolaiv, Strii region, was posthumously awarded with the 3rd degree For Courage Order. During the full-scale war, he served as a flamethrower in the 704th Separate Regiment of Radiation, Chemical and Biological Protection. Since 7 October 2022, the defender has been considered missing. In August 2023, his death near the village of Nova Kamianka, Kherson oblast, was recognized. Earlier, Volodymyr was also awarded the For Military Service to Ukraine medal.

A mural in honour of Yurii Ruf, soldier and poet, was opened in Lviv. It depicts the soldier himself and a quote from his poem.

Rivne oblast

Wounded defenders will be trained in Rivne oblast. Professional trainers will work with the soldiers, and classes will be open to everyone. Within the framework of the initiative, wounded servicemen will be involved in an active life.

Ternopil oblast

Ternopil City Council reported that the community sent 3 DJI Mavic 3T drones to the 35th Separate Rifle Brigade.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Khmelnytskyi City Council, thanks to the over-execution of the revenue part of the budget, allocated UAH 65m for subventions to the military units, which they dispose of themselves, specifically, UAH 25m for the purchase of drones and quadcopters, EW, REP equipment, through the executive committee, and UAH 6m for their own assembly of drones . In addition, UAH 15m were allocated for the payment of financial aid to the families of the killed and the injured for rehabilitation.

Chernivtsi oblast

8 children of privileged categories from Zastavnivska, Novoselytska and Sokyrianska communities came to the 3rd thematic shift Forum of Leadership and Public Initiatives Artek Unites Ukraine! to the Artek international children’s centre. Among them are 3 children of combatants, 1 child of the deceased Defender and 4 children from among IDPs. They will take part in various educational, patriotic, recreational, entertainment and game programs, sports competitions, festivals, gain experience in social activities and communicate with peers from different oblasts of Ukraine.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Ukraine bought a 2nd air defence system from France. It will include an air surveillance radar, a radio communication system, a control centre and a portable weapons distribution terminal. Ukraine acquired the 1st such air defence system in February 2023.

Ihor Zhovkva, Deputy Head of the Office of the President, met Charles Frize, Deputy Secretary General of the European External Action Service for Peace, Security and Defense. They discussed EU security guarantees.

Andrii Yermak, Head of the Office of the President, during a working visit to Italy, met with the Pope in the Vatican. They discussed the philosophy of the Peace Formula of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The Ministry of Defense reported that Ukraine and Turkey agreed on cooperation in the field of rehabilitation of military personnel. The pilot project will include, specifically, the creation of centres of excellence – institutions that will take leadership in the field of rehabilitation.

The World Bank will help Ukraine improve the housing market. The parties will work on creating incentives for private banks to provide affordable loans to Ukrainian families, so that more and more families can purchase housing.

Olena Zelenska, First Lady of Ukraine, announced that as part of the International Coalition, 37 countries are helping to return children abducted by russia to Ukraine. According to her, the search for 19,000 children who were forcibly removed from Ukraine by russia is currently ongoing. Neither Ukrainian authorities nor international organisations have access to them and do not have information about their data and whereabouts.
