Towards Northern Sloboda and Kursk, the enemy carried out 65 attacks, including one from a multiple launch rocket system.
Towards Southern Sloboda, the Defense Forces repelled six enemy attacks in the vicinity of the settlements of Prylipka, Starytsia, Vovchansk and Zelene, two more combat clashes are ongoing.

The defense forces are holding back the onslaught and repelled 26 attacks.
Towards Oleksandrivka, the Ukrainian defenders have repelled 12 assault actions by enemy troops. The enemy is trying to advance in the areas of the settlements of Piddubne, Sosnivka, Vyshneve, Rybne, Yegorivka and Krasnohirske, two clashes are ongoing. Malomykhaylivka was hit by an airstrike by GABs.

Kharkiv oblast
The General Staff reported that the defense forces repelled six attacks by the russian federation near Prylipka, Starytsia, Vovchansk and Zelene, two more clashes are ongoing. Towards Kupiansk, the invaders are trying to advance in the vicinity of Stepova Novoselivka and towards Bohuslavka. Three attacks were repelled, one battle is ongoing.
There were 161 clashes in the oblast.
Towards Southern Sloboda, Ukrainian troops stopped six enemy attacks in the areas of the settlements of Burhuvatka, Vilcha, and Fiholivka.
Towards Kupiansk, there were six attacks by the invaders. Our defenders repelled the enemy’s assault actions in the direction of Kupiansk, Kurylivka, Petropavlivka and Novaya Kruhliakivka.
The city mayor Ihor Terekhov specified said that the russian federation struck a garage cooperative in Slobodskyi district of Kharkiv. Several apartment buildings have windows broken.
The city’s mayor, Serhiy Zelenskyy, said at least six hits were recorded in Lozova during the day — the Russian Federation is hitting the city with Shakheds. The hits were recorded on critical infrastructure and a local enterprise that was under attack last week.
The city of Barvinkove in Kharkiv oblast was hit by enemy strikes.

Donetsk oblast
Most often in 2025, the russian army used UAVs to shell Donetsk oblast, namely 2,324 strikes. russian troops also carried out 1,953 strikes with guided and high-explosive aerial bombs in the region, according to the regional police.
In Rodynske, Ukrainian units are holding back attempts by russian groups to break into the city under the cover of fog. russian troops are entrenched in separate buildings, but are under constant fire, said the chief of artillery of the 20th operational brigade of the NGU Liubart with the call sign Dimas.
The 63rd Motorized Rifle Brigade near Liman destroyed about 50 russian soldiers, wounded 13 and took 4 prisoners on January 8. Despite air strikes, attacks by “Lightning” and infantry assaults, the city’s defense is holding, said the head of the brigade’s communications department, Rostyslav Yashchyshyn.
The 7th Corps of the DSHV reported that in Myrnohrad, the russians have intensified their infiltration into the city and are accumulating forces. Units of the 79th ODShBr discovered and destroyed the occupiers who were hiding in the cesspools of a farm and planning sabotage.

The General Staff reported that in the temporarily occupied territory of Donetsk oblast, Ukrainian troops struck the location of a repair unit of the russian occupiers near Hirne.
The regional State Emergency Service said that an unauthorized explosion occurred in the city of Sloviansk during work to inspect the territory for explosives. Two pyrotechnicians were injured during demining. One of them is in serious condition.
On January 9, at 08:30, russian troops shelled Kramatorsk community, using an FPV drone with a warhead. Household facilities in one of the community’s recreation areas were damaged. There were no injuries or deaths as a result.
During January 8, there were 1,784 enemy strikes on the front line and residential sector.
7 settlements were under fire: the cities of Dobropillia, Druzhkivka, Kostiantynivka, Kramatorsk, the villages of Samiylivka, Serhiivka, Stepanivka.
13 civilian facilities were destroyed, including 6 residential buildings.
One person was injured in Dobropillia as a result of enemy UAVs hitting the territory of an enterprise.
The russians attacked Druzhkivka with four drones of various types – they injured a civilian, damaged 2 apartment buildings and 2 private houses, and an educational institution.
The enemy hit Kramatorsk with a Molniya-2 UAV – a private house was damaged.
Novodonetsk community was under drone attacks: in Samiylivka, 2 premises of an enterprise and a civilian car were damaged, in Stepanivka – a private house.
In Serhiivka, Andriivka community, a non-residential building was damaged.
Ukraine continues to pay compensation for housing destroyed by russian shelling, including in front-line communities of the Donetsk region. Since July 2025, a remote survey mechanism has been in place, using photos, videos, satellite images, and UAV data to record destruction in places where commissions cannot work due to hostilities. As of December 2025, thousands of applications have been submitted in the communities of Donetsk Oblast: 2,253 in Lyman, 3,641 in Kostiantynivska, 5,873 in Toretsk, 8,351 in Myrnohradska, and 9,808 in Pokrovsk. In Pokrovska, certificates for over UAH 729 million in compensation were approved, and in Kostyantynivska, over UAH 19.2 million was paid. To confirm the destruction, the state uses satellite data: As of December 10, 2025, the State Space Agency provided almost 16 thousand images for remote surveys. Even in conditions of active hostilities, the state continues to record destroyed housing and consider applications for compensation.

Luhansk oblast
The invaders do not reduce the fire impact along the entire line of combat contact in Luhansk oblast. Near Novoiehorivka and Nadiia, they struck three times with multiple launch rocket systems, six times with mortar fire and three times with automatic grenade launchers. In addition, near Novoiehorivka, the invaders carried out six shelling attacks with barrel artillery. Near Nadiia, russians tried to hit with four drops from UAVs and two FPV drones. Towards Hrekivka, russians used barrel artillery and mortars three times, and also carried out six drops from drones.
The SBU announced in absentia suspicion of the deputy minister of agriculture and food of the so-called “lpr”, who helped the russian federation export agricultural products, “nationalize” land and integrate the agricultural sector of Luhansk oblast into the economy of the invaders. According to the investigation, the former veterinarian worked for the illegal authorities of the occupiers in Luhansk oblast before the full-scale invasion.
The RMA reports that starting January 20, children from the occupied Luhansk oblast will not be allowed to go to Abkhazia, Belarus and other countries without a Russian passport. Previously, a birth certificate was enough to travel.
Starting March 1, 2026, graduates of medical universities and colleges in the so-called “lpr” will be required to work in their specialty for the first three years after graduation. This decision was made by the State Duma of the russian federation and applies to those who studied on a budget basis. In case of refusal, the occupiers will demand a refund of double the cost of tuition.
From January 20, 2026, the departure of children under the age of 14 from the territory of the “lpr” to Abkhazia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and South Ossetia, as well as their return to the occupied Luhansk region, will be impossible without a russian-style passport. Previously, children were allowed to travel to these areas only with a birth certificate.
What is happening now in the north of Ukraine
Kyiv oblast
On the night of 9 January, russia launched a massive attack on the capital with cruise and ballistic missiles and UAVs. Four people are known to have been killed and at least 26 injured. Three residents of a residential complex in the Dniprovskyi district were killed. A medical worker was killed in the Darnytskyi district by a follow-up UAV strike. Among the injured are five State Emergency Service rescuers, four medical workers, and a police officer. The consequences of the russian attack have been recorded in five districts of the capital: Darnytskyi, Desnianskyi, Dniprovskyi, Pecherskyi, and Shevchenkivskyi.
As of this morning, damage has been reported in at least 29 locations, with the main damage to civilian infrastructure. A total of 19 high-rise buildings, the Qatari embassy building, windows in a kindergarten, a tram depot, an unfinished high-rise building, cars, a supermarket and a petrol station have been damaged.
According to Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klychko, as a result of the russian combined attack in Kyiv, critical infrastructure has been damaged with power outages lasting in some areas. Half of the city’s apartment buildings – almost 6,000 – are without heating. The city is also experiencing water supply disruptions.

In Darnytskyi district of Kyiv, a UAV crashed in the courtyard of a residential building, damaging a shop. There was also a fire on the 15th floor of a 16-storey building, with garages and a non-residential building catching fire. A medic was killed and four medical workers injured when the UAV struck the landing site again. At another location, a UAV hit the 12th floor of a building, causing partial collapse of the structure and destroying two apartments. The building has been cut off from electricity and heat. One car was destroyed and about 10 damaged.

In Desnianskyi district, a drone hit the roof of a residential building on the 18th floor. A fire also broke out in a 5-storey residential building. In another 5-storey building, smoke filled the stairwell and a fire broke out in several apartments. One drone fell on the territory of a health resort. Fires were reported on the territory of a shopping centre and a sanatorium.
In Dniprovskyi district, a non-residential building caught fire. Also, as a result of falling UAV debris, a 16-storey and a nine-storey residential buildings caught fire. The blast wave partially destroyed the roof of a three-storey residential building, damaged the entrance hall and caused a fire – 29 people were evacuated from there. Debris also fell on a playground and near a tram depot.
In Pecherskyi district, vehicles and a residential building caught fire. The facade of a nine-storey building was partially destroyed. There is damage to the 23rd and 24th floors of a high-rise non-residential building.
In Shevchenkivskyi district, a fire broke out in a non-residential building.

Mykola Kalashnyk, Head of the Kyiv Regional Military Administration, reported that the consequences of the russian night attack on 9 January were recorded in five districts of Kyiv oblast. A total of five people were injured, including one child.
Brovarskyi district was affected the most. As a result of the russian attack, a fire broke out in two private residential buildings. Rescuers pulled three adults and a 5-year-old child from the rubble. All of them were hospitalised with symptoms of poisoning from combustion products. The child is in serious condition in intensive care. Fires and damage to private houses, garages, cars, production and storage facilities, and industrial enterprises were also reported in the district. Apartments in a high-rise building were damaged by the blast wave.
A private house was damaged in Vyshgorod region.
In Obukhiv region, a private house and farm warehouses burned down.
Three private houses were damaged in Boryspil region. Debris from the drone also fell on the hospital grounds.
In Bucha region, two apartment buildings were damaged as a result of the attack.

The Regional State Administration reported that as of the morning of 9 January, more than 370,000 consumers remained without electricity in Kyiv oblast as a result of the russian federation’s attack and difficult weather conditions. About 200 emergency teams of power engineers are working intensively to restore the networks. As of 14:40, power had been restored to 100,000 subscribers. A total of 438 resilience centres are operating in all communities in the region, where people can warm up, charge their phones, use the internet, and drink hot tea.
Zhytomyr oblast
In 2025, 27 religious communities in Zhytomyr oblast left the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate and joined the Orthodox Church of Ukraine. This was reported by the Department of Cultural Heritage, Religious Affairs, Nationalities and Tourism of the Zhytomyr Regional State Administration’s Department of Culture and Tourism.
In 2025, as part of an experimental project in Zhytomyr Oblast, 105 women began to learn professions that were traditionally considered male. According to Zhytomyr Regional Employment Centre, forty employers submitted orders for certain professions. Woodworking machine operators were in the highest demand among employers.
Sumy oblast
Over the course of the day, from the morning of 8 January to the morning of 9 January, russian forces carried out nearly 20 shelling attacks on 11 settlements across five territorial communities in the oblast. The highest number of attacks was recorded in Sumy and Shostka regions. The enemy used artillery, mortars, FPV drones and UAVs. As a result of the shelling, a private residential house was destroyed in Hlukhiv community. Over the day, the air raid alert in the oblast lasted for 10 hours and 9 minutes.
Over the course of the day, local authorities, together with units of the State Emergency Service, the National Police and public organisations, evacuated 45 people from border communities.
Chernihiv oblast
Chernihiv Border Guard Detachment reported that over the course of 8 January, russian forces attacked three border communities in Chernihiv oblast: Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka and Snovsk. In total, the enemy carried out 10 FPV drone strikes. Five settlements came under attack.
Chernihivoblenergo JSC informed that in Chernihiv oblast, due to severe weather conditions and shelling, more than 60,000 subscribers across various communities were left without electricity as of 7am on 9 January.
Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine
Dnipropetrovsk oblast
Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovsk Regional Council reported that as a result of a UAV attack, a private house and an outbuilding caught fire. Two private homes were damaged. The occupiers attacked the regional centre, as well as Marhanets and Pokrovske communities, using drones and artillery. A private house, an outbuilding and infrastructure were damaged.
According to updated information, a 77-year-old woman was killed in Kryvyi Rih as a result of yesterday’s strikes. Twenty-three people were injured, including six children.
In Pishchaska community, a 43-year-old man was killed as a result of a UAV attack. A private house, vehicles, a tractor and a power line were damaged. The enemy attacked regional centre and Myrove, Marhanets, Pokrovske and Chervonohryhorivka communities by drones and artillery. Nine private houses, two outbuildings, a hospital, a religious institution, a garage, vehicles, a gas pipeline and power lines were damaged.
Kirovohrad oblast
Andrii Raikovych, Head of Kirovohrad Regional Military Administration, said that as a result of an enemy drone attack, a private household was damaged in one of the communities of Novoukrainka region.
Cherkasy oblast
Ihor Taburets, Head of Cherkasy Regional Military Administration, informed that ten russian UAVs were neutralised in the skies over Cherkasy oblast. In Cherkasy region, debris damaged windows and roofs of at least five houses and the same number of outbuildings.

Zaporizhzhia oblast
As reported by the head of the Regional Military Administration, Ivan Fedorov, the russian army attacked the village of Hryhorivske in Zaporizhzhia region. As a result of the shelling, one person was injured. A private house was partially destroyed. Later, he reported that russians attacked a residential building in Zaporizhzhia. Preliminary reports indicate there were no injured or fatalities.
Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration reported that yesterday, 8 January, occupiers carried out 728 strikes on 24 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast. russian forces conducted 12 air strikes on Yuliivka, Liubytske, Rizdvianka, Zaliznychne, Hirkе, Verkhniа Tersa, and Dorozhnianka. 395 UAVs of various types, mostly FPV drones, attacked Novooleksandrivka, Lysohirka, Hryhorivka, Stepnohirsk, Prymorske, Stepove, Huliaipole, Zaliznychne, Shcherbaky, Mali Shcherbaky, Novodanylivka, Novoandriivka, Mala Tokmachka, Charivne, Bilohiria, Zelene, Varvarivka, and Solodke. Four MLRS strikes were carried out on Huliaipole and Zaliznychne. Another 317 artillery strikes hit Stepnohirsk, Prymorske, Stepove, Huliaipole, Zaliznychne, Shcherbaky, Mali Shcherbaky, Novodanylivka, Novoandriivka, Mala Tokmachka, Charivne, Bilohiria, Dorozhnianka, Zelene, Varvarivka, and Solodke. 37 reports were received regarding damage to housing and vehicles. A 55-year-old woman was injured as a result of an enemy attack on Zaporizhzhia region.
According to the General Staff, as of 16:00 on 9 January, there were 16 combat engagements towards Huliaipole near Solodke, Huliaipole, Varvarivka, and Zelene. Three engagements are currently ongoing. Over the past day, 8 January, the Defense Forces of Ukraine repelled 21 russian attacks towards Huliaipole and two towards Orikhiv.
Odesa oblast
Odesa region is under russian drones attack. An air raid alert was announced in the region at 16:06. The Air Force reported that russian drones are moving toward Odesa and Chornomorsk from the Black Sea area.
Yesterday, 8 January, the enemy attacked the port infrastructure of Odesa oblast with strike drones. There were explosions on the territory of a seaport in Odesa region. An empty oil storage tank was damaged.
The press service of the Southern Air Command reported that during 8 January, russians attacked Odesa oblast with four extended-range aerial bombs. Also, yesterday, air defense forces of southern Ukraine destroyed six UAVs of various types, including Shahed and “Gerbera,” as well as six Molniya strike drones.
Kherson oblast
According to Kherson Regional Military Administration, today russian forces attacked Kherson several times. Around noon, russian occupiers shelled a hospital in Kherson. As a result of the strike, one of the hospital departments was damaged. Three female medical workers sustained blast injuries and concussions. As a result of the shelling of the central part of Kherson at around 12:30, a 73-year-old woman suffered a blast injury and a shrapnel wound to her arm. At approximately 13:00, a utility worker was injured due to кussian shelling of Kherson. The 60-year-old man was diagnosed with a blast injury and shrapnel wounds to his back.
Around noon, кussian occupiers attacked Novovorontsovka with a UAV. The enemy dropped an explosive device from a drone on a 44-year-old man. He sustained a blast injury and shrapnel wounds to his face.
Police of Khersonoblast reported that yesterday, 8 January, russian attacks targeted Kherson, Antonivka, Kizomys, Prydniprovske, Sadove, Dniprovske, Bilozerka, Sofiivka, Komyshany, Molodizhne, Myrne, Novovorontsovka, Kamiane, Novoraisk, Tarasa Shevchenka, Tomaryne, Nova Shestirnia, Kozatske, and Vesele. As a result of the shelling, three apartment buildings and 10 private houses, a critical infrastructure facility, a police service vehicle and a civilian car, a café, and a workshop were damaged. Four people were killed and 10 injured, including two children.
According to the General Staff, as of 16:00 on 9 January, here was one unsuccessful attempt by russian forces to improve their position towards Kherson.
Activists of the Yellow Ribbon movement report that in Henichesk, in the temporarily occupied territory of Kherson oblast, russian security forces are conducting another round of searches. Locals say this is already the third inspection since the beginning of the year.

Volyn oblast
Manevytska Village Council reported that Vladyslav Herasymenko, soldier from the community, who was killed in Donetsk oblast in November 2023, was posthumously awarded with the III degree For Courage Order.
Zakarpattia oblast
Uzhhorod City Council reported that another UAH 550,000 was allocated from the budget at the request of military units, which made it possible to purchase a specialized vehicle for the needs of the military.
Ivano-Frankivsk oblast
Another center for the recovery and rehabilitation of soldiers has opened in the Carpathian region. There, servicemen will be able to comprehensively recover from injuries, improve their physical condition and work on their mental health.
Lviv oblast
According to the Air Force, the strike on Lviv was carried out by a ballistic missile. The air target was moving along a ballistic trajectory at a speed of about 13,000 km per hour – this is an extremely high speed. This is the first time this type of strike has been used on Lviv during a full-scale war. The city is located less than 70 km from the border with the EU.
A shock wave from an enemy missile attack at night triggered a safety shut-off valve at the gas control point in Rudno. Experts have shut off the gas supply until the cause of the accident is determined. 376 subscribers are temporarily without gas. Work is underway to restore gas supply. In addition, 6 private trucks were damaged.
Rivne oblast
The RMA reported that in 2025, the oblast received 37 evacuation trains from Donetsk oblast (519 people).
Ternopil oblast
26 military personnel from Ternopil will receive a one-time cash grant to purchase the necessary equipment. Since the beginning of the year, 3,013 community defenders have already benefited from this assistance.
Khmelnytskyi oblast
In 2025, 1,048 family members of fallen Heroes received material assistance from Khmelnytskyi community budget. The total amount of assistance is almost UAH 20m.
Chernivtsi oblast
The Central City Clinical Hospital of Chernivtsi received a 50 kW solar power plant as part of the Sun for Ukraine competition, implemented by Greenpeace Ukraine. The solar power plant is expected to save the hospital approximately UAH 500,000 per year. In addition to financial savings, installing a solar power plant increases the hospital’s energy sustainability and helps reduce CO₂ emissions.
International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)
John Healy, UK Defence Secretary, announced that the United Kingdom is launching mass production of interceptor drones for Ukraine. This is not a one-off delivery, but more than a thousand drones per month for the Defence Forces.
