The Defense Forces are taking measures to prevent the enemy from advancing deeper into Ukrainian territory.
Since the beginning of this day, 54 combat engagements have taken place.
Today, communities of border settlements came under enemy artillery fire, in particular Kucherivka, Studenok, Bila Bereza, Ryzhivka, and Neskuchne in the Sumy region.
In the Northern Slobozhanskyi and Kursk directions, Ukrainian soldiers repelled two assault actions by the occupiers. In addition, the enemy carried out 51 shelling attacks on the positions of our troops and populated areas, including one using a multiple launch rocket system.
In the Southern Slobozhanskyi direction, the Defense Forces repelled five attacks by enemy troops, three of which are still ongoing. The enemy is attempting to advance in the areas of the settlements of Burhuvatka, Vilcha, and Fyholivka.
In the Kupiansk direction, the enemy attempted once to advance on our positions toward Kupiansk but was repelled.
In the Lyman direction, the invading army carried out three attacks on the positions of Ukrainian units toward the settlements of Drobysheve and Stavky. Two combat engagements are ongoing.
In the Sloviansk and Kramatorsk directions, no enemy offensive actions have been recorded so far.
In the Kostiantynivka direction, the enemy carried out eight assault actions in the areas of the settlements of Oleksandro-Shultyne, Pleshchiivka, Ivanopillia, Rusyn Yar, and Sofiivka.
In the Pokrovsk direction, Russian invaders made 18 attempts to push our defenders from their positions in the areas of the settlements of Nykanorivka, Chervonyi Lyman, Rodynske, Myrnohrad, Kotlyne, Udachne, Molodetske, Filiia, and Dachne. The Defense Forces are holding the line and have already repelled 16 enemy attacks.
In the Oleksandrivka direction, the enemy is trying to break through the defenses of our defenders in the areas of the settlements of Verbove, Vyshneve, Zlahoda, Rybne, and Yehorivka. Our soldiers repelled three enemy assaults; three more combat engagements are ongoing.
In the Huliaipole direction, 10 combat engagements took place in the areas of the settlements of Solodke, Huliaipole, and near Varvarivka. Two engagements are ongoing. Enemy air strikes hit Yuliivka, Rizdvianka, Hirske, Verkhniia Tersa, Liubytske, and Zaliznychne.
In the Orikhiv direction, the enemy did not conduct offensive actions.
In the Prydniprovske direction, the enemy unsuccessfully attempted once to approach our defenders near the Antonivskyi Bridge.
In other directions, there were no significant changes.
In the evening of January 8, Russia struck Kryvyi Rih with two Iskander missiles, according to the head of the city’s Defense Council, Oleksandr Vilkul. As a result, 13 people were injured.
Recent war events in the east of Ukraine
Kharkiv oblast
Since the beginning of the day, Russian forces have carried out five attacks in the Southern Slobozhanskyi direction, three of which are still ongoing as of 16:00. According to the General Staff, they are attempting to advance in the areas of Burhuvatka, Vilcha, and Fyholivka. In the Kupiansk direction, Russian troops attempted once to assault Ukrainian positions toward Kupiansk but were repelled.
Over the past day, 275 combat engagements were recorded.
In the Southern Slobozhanskyi direction, our troops stopped 15 enemy attacks in the areas of the settlements of Vovchanski Khutory, Vovchansk, Starytsia, Zelene, Tykhe, and toward the settlements of Vilcha, Ternova, and Kutkivka.
In the Kupiansk direction, 14 attacks by the invaders took place yesterday. Our defenders repelled enemy assault actions in the areas of the settlements of Stepova Novoselivka, Pishchane, Borivska Andriivka, and toward Nova Kruhlakivka and Kupiansk.
The previous day, the enemy reportedly used artillery weapons against the Kharkiv region.
In the Kupiansk district, a vehicle was damaged (Hrushivka village) and a private house was damaged (Nechvolodivka village).
A 50-year-old man died as a result of a strike on Kupiansk on December 29, and a 45-year-old man was wounded and hospitalized in a Kharkiv hospital. This became known on January 7, according to the head of the Kupiansk District Military Administration, Andrii Kanashevych.
Over the past day, the transit evacuation point in Lozova received 60 people. Since the beginning of its operation, a total of 16,289 people have been registered at the point.
Over the past week in the Kharkiv region, more than 30 hectares of territory were demined. More than 8 hectares of agricultural land, over 5 km of power lines, 100 meters of gas pipelines, and one household were inspected in the region. After the work, 928 subscribers were reconnected to the power grid. In total, 1,207 explosive devices were neutralized.
Donetsk oblast
Russian troops increased the number of attacks in the Pokrovsk direction to 77 over the course of the day, the General Staff reported. Assaults were conducted in the areas of the settlements of Shakhove, Nykanorivka, Fedorivka, Dorozhnie, Rodynske, Myrnohrad, Pokrovsk, Udachne, Molodetske, and toward Novopavlivka and Filiia.
In the Kostiantynivka direction, Russian forces carried out 22 attacks, and another 18 attacks occurred in the Lyman direction.
The 4th Rapid Response Brigade “Rubizh” in the Pokrovsk direction destroys Russian equipment on a daily basis—about 60 units in December alone. Russian army assaults are decreasing due to enormous losses. The occupiers are attempting to break through toward Bilytske and Dobropillia, said brigade officer Andrii Otchenash.
On January 7, Russian forces carried out 1,328 shelling attacks along the front line and against residential areas.
Five settlements came under fire: the cities of Druzhkivka, Mykolaivka, Sloviansk, the settlement of Novodonetske, and the village of Tykhonivka.
Fifteen civilian objects were damaged, including 10 residential houses.
In Sloviansk, the Russians struck with a Geran-2 UAV, wounding a civilian and damaging nine private houses and three vehicles.
In Mykolaivka, a Lancet UAV strike damaged an outbuilding. Tykhonivka of the Mykolaivka territorial community was shelled with multiple launch rocket systems, damaging a private home.
From Druzhkivka in Donetsk region—where a mandatory evacuation of families with children was announced in August 2025—two more children were evacuated together with their mother, the regional police reported.
In 11 settlements of Donetsk region where the mandatory evacuation of families with children is ongoing, 698 minors remain, according to Dmytro Petlin, head of a department of the Civil Protection Directorate. According to his data, as of the beginning of 2026, 192.6 thousand civilians remain in the government-controlled territory of Donetsk region, including 12,405 children.
Luhansk oblast
Russian forces attacked 23 times in the Lyman and Sloviansk directions. In Luhansk region, they applied pressure from the direction of Novovodiane and attempted to advance near Novoiehorivka, where Ukrainian Defenders are holding back the enemy. Novoiehorivka was shelled three times with automatic grenade launchers and mortars, while Nadiia was hit six times with automatic grenade launchers; mortars and tube artillery were also used. Hrekivka came under artillery fire. The occupiers carried out three UAV-dropped munitions strikes on Ukrainian positions.
In Dnipro and Samara, five “Points of Invincibility” from Luhansk region have been opened. The hubs are equipped with autonomous power supply and are open to local residents and internally displaced persons, reported the head of the Regional Military Administration, Kharchenko. They were deployed due to a Russian attack on Dnipro. From the evening of January 7, a blackout occurred in the region. In the city, electric public transport is not operating, ATMs are down, and disruptions to mobile communications and internet service are also being observed.
In Sievierodonetsk, the occupiers continue to demonstrate the poor quality of their so-called “repairs”: in a building in the older districts of the city, the facade was painted, but the windows were not glazed before winter.
In Lysychansk, electricity supply has been absent in all districts since January 2, including areas with critical infrastructure. Power is provided only for a few hours once every 2–3 days, despite occupiers’ claims of allegedly completed repairs, reported the head of the Luhansk Regional Military Administration, Oleksii Kharchenko.
What is happening now in the north of Ukraine
Kyiv oblast
In Kyiv region, one of the centers housing internally displaced persons will be expanded—the “Ridni Liudy” (Kindred People) Permanent Residence Center located in the settlement of Vorzel. Currently, 72 people live there, and by the end of January it is planned to open an additional 50 places. The center is being developed through the joint efforts of Ukrainian volunteers and private American donors. Families from Donetsk and Luhansk regions and other frontline areas live there, the Regional Military Administration reported.
Overall, more than 233,000 internally displaced persons are registered in Kyiv region. Among them are tens of thousands of children, elderly people, and persons with disabilities. The region has 33 temporary accommodation facilities housing more than 6,000 people, including over 1,000 children. Currently, the region has identified 10 additional premises that will be able to accommodate more than 1,100 additional displaced persons.
In the capital on January 7, a ceremonial awards event was held for rescuers of the Kyiv garrison of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SES), who distinguished themselves while responding to the consequences of enemy attacks and working under martial law. Fifteen rescuers were awarded the state decoration of the President of Ukraine, “For the Defense of Ukraine,” and another 15 employees of the capital’s service received departmental awards of the SES for courage, professionalism, and dedicated service.
In the city of Vyshneve, a ceremonial event took place to hand over new rescue equipment and honor SES personnel for courage, selflessness, and high professionalism. The event brought together rescuers from Kyiv region and representatives of local authorities, the SES of Kyiv region reported. Certificates for special vehicles were presented to units of the Malovilshanska, Vyshnivska, Vasylkivska, Kaharlytska, and Rzhyshchiv territorial communities.
Zhytomyr oblast
Zhytomyr region will receive families with children who are being evacuated due to the security situation in Dnipropetrovsk region, the Regional Military Administration reported on January 7. According to preliminary information, Zhytomyr region will host up to 150 families.
Zhytomyr Lyceum No. 25, which was destroyed by Russian shelling, will be helped to be rebuilt by Lithuanian partners. They plan to announce an international design competition, already having a standard design that has been adapted and has fully passed expert review in accordance with Ukrainian legislation. This was reported by the First Deputy Mayor of Zhytomyr, Svitlana Olshanska.
Sumy oblast
Ukrainian forces repelled an assault by the russian army between Andriivka and Oleksiivka in Sumy oblast. According to the Operational Group “Kursk”, from the evening of 6 January russian troops launched a large-scale, combined assault on the positions of the 71st Separate Airmobile Brigade. Fighting took place at three locations. Enemy assault groups were successfully destroyed by UAVs and artillery of the 71st Separate Airmobile Brigade and adjacent units. Total enemy personnel losses amounted to 42.
Over the course of the day, from the morning of 7 January to the morning of 8 January, russian forces carried out nearly 20 shelling attacks on 12 settlements across nine territorial communities in the oblast. The highest number of attacks was recorded in Sumy and Shostka regions. The enemy used artillery, mortars, FPV drones and UAVs. Over the day, the air raid alert in the oblast lasted for 3 hours and 19 minutes.
Civilian infrastructure was damaged or destroyed:
* In Sumy community, an administrative building and a passenger car were damaged;
* In the Shostka community, civilian infrastructure facilities were damaged;
* In Znob-Novhorodske community, a civilian infrastructure facility was damaged;
* In Seredyno-Buda community, a civilian infrastructure facility was damaged;
* In Svesa community, a civilian infrastructure facility was damaged.
Over the course of the day, local authorities, together with units of the State Emergency Service, the National Police and public organisations, evacuated three people from border communities.
The National Police reported that the “White Angel” crew evacuated an elderly couple from a frontline community in Sumy oblast. A man appealed to the special unit for assistance in evacuating his parents from the Velyka Pysarivka community. His 88-year-old father and 86-year-old mother were in the frontline settlement. The woman suffered a stroke several days ago and required urgent medical assistance.
Chernihiv oblast
Chernihiv Border Guard Detachment reported that over the course of 7 January, russian forces attacked two border communities in Chernihiv oblast. The enemy carried out two Shahed-type UAV strikes on Snovsk town. It also attacked three villages in Semenivka community by FPV drones (six explosions) and tube artillery (four explosions).
The National Police Department informed that in Chernihiv oblast, during 2025, specialists of the police explosive ordnance disposal service surveyed approximately 950,000 square metres of territory and neutralised 1,373 explosive devices. In total, police bomb disposal units carried out 1,700 deployments over the past year.
According to Department of Information Activity and Public Communications of Chernihiv Regional Military Administration, as of 7 January, nine locations for temporary accommodation of internally displaced persons have been designated in the oblast. Currently, around 500 people are residing in such facilities free of charge. More than 950 places remain available. These include six modular towns in various communities of the oblast and three dormitories.
Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine
Dnipropetrovsk oblast
Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovsk Regional Military Administration, reported that as a result of a UAV attack, infrastructure facilities were damaged. Energy workers are carrying out repair works to eliminate the damage as quickly as possible and restore electricity supply to residents. The enemy directed UAVs at Dubovykivka and Vasylkivka communities. Fires broke out. A shop was destroyed and a garage damaged. The russian forces continued attacking Nikopol, Pokrovske and Chervonohryhorivka communities by drones and artillery.
Artillery and drone strikes targeted the regional centre, Marhanets, Myrove and Pokrovske communities. A five-storey building, 3 private houses, an outbuilding, a truck, infrastructure facilities and a power line were damaged. According to updated information, 3 private houses and an outbuilding were damaged in Nikopol as a result of the previous day’s attacks. In Vasylkivka community, 2 private houses, an outbuilding and a vehicle were damaged by a UAV strike. In Bohdanivka community, a truck was damaged. In Kryvyi Rih, 17 people were injured as a result of a missile strike, including 4 children. Four multi-storey buildings and infrastructure facilities were damaged.

Vinnytsia oblast
Mykhailo Fedorov, Minister of Digital Transformation of Ukraine, reported that following the massive shelling of energy infrastructure in Dnipropetrovsk oblast, Vinnytsia joined efforts to restore mobile communications in the affected area. Generators were sent from the city to support the operation of base stations operated by mobile providers, ensuring communication and internet access during blackouts.
Poltava oblast
A serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Anton Kovalchuk, was killed while defending Ukrainian territorial integrity during russia’s aggression. The soldier was a native of Kremenchuk and served as a sniper. He was killed while carrying out a combat mission in Donetsk oblast.

Zaporizhzhia oblast
According to the Oblenergo (regional power distribution company), as of 4pm, Zaporizhzhia oblast was switched to a standard power supply scheme following yesterday’s shelling, allowing for reliable and stable electricity provision.
The State Emergency Service reported that on 7 January, a woman was injured in Sofiivka village as a result of a strike.
Ivan Fedorov, Head of Zaporizhzhia RMA, stated that on 7 January, russian forces carried out more than 690 strikes on 26 cities and villages in Zaporizhzhia oblast. As a result of the shelling, 5 people were injured.
Mykolaiv oblast
Based on the information provided by Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, on 7 January, russian forces attacked Halytsynivka and Kutsurub communities 3 times by FPV drones. One of the attacks damaged a passenger vehicle.
Odesa oblast
Oleh Kiper, Head of the RMA, informed that russian forces launched attack on port infrastructure in Odesa oblast, damaging an empty oil storage tank. No fire broke out at the site and there were no casualties or injuries reported.
Operational Command South reported that on 7 January, russia struck Odesa oblast with 2 Iskander-M ballistic missiles launched from temporarily occupied Crimea.
Referring to the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, in the morning, UAVs were detected in the airspace moving from the Black Sea toward Pivdenne and Odesa.
Kherson oblast
According to Kherson Regional Military Administration, at approximately 11am, russian forces attacked a civilian vehicle by a drone on a highway near Taras Shevchenko village in Beryslav community. As a result of an explosive device dropped from a UAV, a man born in 1962 was killed. A 64-year-old resident was taken to hospital in moderate condition, having sustained blast injuries, a concussion and shrapnel wounds to the face and leg.
At around 12:30pm, russian forces shelled the central part of Kherson. 2 men were killed and 1 person injured.
At approximately 6:30am, russian troops shelled Dniprovskyi district of Kherson. 4 people were injured, women aged 44 and 39, and men aged 33 and 47. They sustained blast injuries and concussions and were hospitalised in moderate condition.
Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine
Volyn oblast
Representatives from Novovolynsk community made their 1st trip to the front line in 2026. In total, they delivered equipment worth UAH 1.8m: UAVs, charging stations, tires, etc.
Zakarpattia oblast
Uzhhorod City Council presented certificates of gratitude to benefactors from the Czech Republic. Certificates of gratitude were presented to Michael Murad, Deputy Director of the Center for an Informed Society in Prague, and to Salim Murad, Medic of Sciences at the Faculty of Pedagogy of Charles University in Prague, for organizing assistance and making a significant personal contribution to supporting the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Ivano-Frankivsk oblast
The RMA held a meeting with international partners who provide support to children with disabilities – residents of boarding schools. This is the Irish non-governmental organization Effective Aid Ukraine. Since the beginning of the full-scale war, it has helped 1,240 Ukrainians with disabilities, including those from temporarily occupied territories, to settle in Ireland and receive the necessary support. During the meeting, prospects for further cooperation in the social sphere were discussed.
Lviv oblast
Over UAH 2m was raised in Lviv oblast to strengthen the troops. This was achieved during an auction from the Birds of Victory charity project, which took place at the Play ski resort. The funds will be used to purchase combat drones for the Defenders and prosthetics for defenders who were seriously injured during hostilities.
Rivne oblast
Combat medic from Rivne oblast Yurii Kotniuk became an Honored Donor of Ukraine. This title was awarded by the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy by his Decree. As a donor, Yurii donated blood and plasma over 120 times. As a combat medic, he participated in battles in Mykolaiv, Kherson, Zaporizhia and Sumy oblasts.
Ternopil oblast
The oblast received 200 medical backpacks for the Armed Forces of Ukraine medics from abroad. This is another important aid, which was made possible thanks to the Airborne Cossack Swarm, volunteers from the US – the city of Detroit, Michigan, and the United Support for Ukraine CF.
Khmelnytskyi oblast
Khmelnytskyi City Council allocated UAH 122.1m to provide material assistance to military personnel and their families. UAH 40m was allocated to purchase housing for military personnel.
Chernivtsi oblast
Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, awarded soldiers who were killed in battles for Ukraine. The III degree For Courage Order (posthumously) was awarded to soldier Serhii Sahaidak.
International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)
The United Kingdom has sent 13 Raven air defense systems to Ukraine and has begun supplying Gravehawk complexes.
Britain and France could send up to 15,000 troops to defend Ukraine if a peace deal is reached. Germany is ready to deploy troops near Ukraine, possibly in Poland or Romania. Lithuania could send a few hundred soldiers to Ukraine after a ceasefire.
