It has been the 805th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6pm:   

During the day of 8 May, there were 121x tactical engagements. 

The enemy launched a total of 59x missile and 55x air strikes, 84x MLRS attacks on the positions of Ukrainian troops and various settlements. Unfortunately, the russian terrorist attacks have wounded civilians. Residential apartment blocks and private houses, as well as other civil infrastructure, including energy infrastructure, got destroyed and damaged.

Volyn and Polissia axes: no significant changes. No signs of formation of an offensive group. 

Sivershchyna and Slobozhanshchyna axes: the adversary maintains its military presence in the russian areas bordering Ukraine. The enemy conducts subversion, continues shelling of Ukrainian settlements from the territory of russia and increases the concentration of mining operations along the state border of Ukraine. The adversary launched air strikes in the vicinities of Bilyi Kolodiaz, Staryi Saltiv and Lukiantsi (Kharkiv oblast). More than 10x settlements, including Bleshnia, Mykhalchyna Sloboda, Mistky (Chernihiv oblast), Prohres, Iskryskivshchyna, Basivka, Zapsillia (Sumy oblast), came under enemy artillery and mortar fire.

Kupiansk and Lyman axes: the Ukrainian defenders repelled 7x attacks in the vicinities of Synkivka, Ivanivka, Berestove (Kharkiv oblast), Stelmakhivka (Luhansk oblast), where the enemy, using air attacks, attempted to improve its tactical position. The invaders fired artillery and mortars at around 10x settlements, including Petropavlivka, Stepova Novoselivka, Berestove (Kharkiv oblast).

Lyman axis: the Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled 9x attacks in the vicinities of Makiivka, Nevske, Novolyubivka and Serebrianka forestry (Luhansk oblast). The enemy fired artillery and mortars at more than 10x settlements, including Nevske (Luhansk oblast), Terny, Yampolivka, Torske (Donetsk oblast).

Bakhmut axis: the Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled 21x attacks in the vicinities of Bilohorivka (Luhansk oblast), Verkhnokamianske, Klishchiivka, Ivanivske, Novyi, Andriivka (Donetsk oblast), where the enemy attempted to improve its tactical position. The adversary launched air strikes in the vicinities of Chasiv Yar, Druzhba, Pivnichne (Donetsk oblast). More than 10x settlements came under artillery and mortar fire, including Orikhovo-Vasylivka, Hryhorivka, Chasiv Yar (Donetsk oblast).

Avdiivka axis: the Ukrainian defenders repelled 35x attacks in the vicinities of Novooleksandrivka, Yevhenivka, Sokil, Novopokrovske, Semenivka, Umanske, Netailove, Nevelske (Donetsk oblast), where the enemy, with air support, made attempts to dislodge Ukrainian troops from their positions. The adversary launched air strikes in the vicinities of Oleksandropil, Novoselivka Persha, Karlivka, Moskovske (Donetsk oblast). The invaders fired artillery and mortars at around 20x settlements, including Novooleksandrivka, Sokil, Novopokrovske, Umanske (Donetsk oblast).

Novopavlivka axis: the Ukrainian Defense Forces continue to hold back the enemy near Kostiantynivka, Paraskoviivka and Urozhaine (Donetsk oblast), where the invaders, using air attacks, made 6x attempts to breach Ukrainian defence. The enemy fired artillery and mortars at more than 10x settlements, including Krasnohorivka, Maksymilianivka, Heorhiivka (Donetsk oblast).

Orikhiv axis: the enemy launched 19x assaults on positions of Ukrainian defenders in the vicinity of Staromaiorske (Donetsk oblast). The adversary launched an airstrike in the vicinity of Robotyne (Zaporizhzhia oblast). Around 20x settlements, including Bilohiria, Robotyne, Kamianske (Zaporizhzhia oblast), were under artillery and mortar fire of the occupiers.

Kherson axis: the enemy does not abandon its intention to dislodge Ukrainian troops from their bridgeheads on the left bank of the Dnipro River. The invaders executed 1x unsuccessful assault on positions of Ukrainian troops in the vicinity of Krynky (Kherson oblast). The occupiers fired artillery and mortars at around 20 settlements, including Krynky, Tiahynka, Kachkarivka, Kizomys, Stanislav (Kherson oblast) and the city of Kherson.

Martial law and mobilisation in Ukraine have been extended for another 90 days. The Rada supported the presidential decrees extending general mobilisation and martial law until 11 August 2024. This is the eleventh extension since the start of the full-scale war.

Journalists were granted access to the Verkhovna Rada. The relevant order was signed by the Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Ruslan Stefanchuk.

The Rada adopted a law on the mobilisation of convicted persons. It includes that those convicted of crimes against national security, the intentional murder of two or more people and rape will not be able to be mobilised. This legislative initiative was approved by 279 MPs.

Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the government has purchased 10,500 drones for the needs of the Defence Forces through the Prozorro Market electronic catalogue. These include FPV drones, DJI Mavic, DJI Air 2S, and DJI Phantom.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

Oleh Syniehubov, Head of Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, reported that in the afternoon the invaders attacked Kharkiv. A hit was recorded in an open area on the territory of an educational institution. 7 people were injured, including an 8-year-old girl and three boys aged 14, 14 and 15, who were playing football on the playground. Two of the boys are in critical condition, one boy and one girl are in average condition. All were hospitalised. A 55-year-old man with moderate injuries was also taken to hospital.  Two women, aged 80 and 32, are in light condition and were treated on the spot. According to preliminary police reports, it was a drone or a missile.

At 2:42am, Kharkiv air defence forces shot down two Shahed UAVs in the northern part of the city. There were no damage or casualties reported.

Yesterday about 15 settlements in Kharkiv oblast were under enemy artillery and mortar attack: Synkivka, Stepova Novoselivka, Berestove and others. Dvorichna and Synkivka were hit by airstrikes.

At 5pm, russians shelled Kucherivka village, Kupiansk region. A private house burned as a result of the shelling.

At 9:30am, russians targeted  Cherkaski Tyshky village, Kharkiv region. The roofs of two private houses were damaged as a result of the hostile shelling.

Yesterday Ukrainian troops repelled 16 attacks towards Kupiansk, including Synkivka, Pishchane and Berestove.

Combined teams of bomb experts cleared 36.56 hectares of mines and destroyed 682 explosive ordnance.

Donetsk oblast

The press service of Donetsk police reported that yesterday russian troops launched 1677 attacks. The enemy used aircraft, Uragan MRLs, UAVs and artillery. 6 settlements were hit: Kurakhove city, Kalynove, Mykolaivka, Novyi Komar, Predtechyne and Prohres villages. 10 civilian objects were damaged , including 9 residential buildings and an outbuilding.

Also russian troops attacked Mykolaivka by Uragan rocket launchers, damaging three houses.

Prohres village was hit by an airstrike. A house was destroyed. There were no casualties.

Luhansk oblast

According to Luhansk Regional Military Administration, russians attacked Nevske, Kuzemivka and Stelmakhivka by mortars and cannon artillery, and at Makiivka by rocket launchers. Near Nevske and Kuzemivka, 13 enemy UAVs tried to attack the fortifications of our military. The enemy attacked near Stelmakhivka, where they had air support, and near Nevske.

In the so-called “lpr”, difficulties arise for those men who did not have time to receive a russian passport when they were massively distributed. From now on, they can only get them through the military enlistment office. If it turns out that a person has not registered for military service within two weeks, they will be fined. Passport replacement is also done through the military enlistment office.

The occupation authorities have tried to introduce food price regulation, forcing them to artificially sell goods at cost. However, prices “fall” only during inspections, which supermarket owners are warned about in advance.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

Ruslan Kravchenko, Head of the RMA, reported that at night the enemy attacked Kyiv oblast with kamikaze drones and cruise missiles. No damage to residential or critical infrastructure was recorded. The fall of debris was detected in 4 districts. 

Two people were injured in Brovary as a result of the falling debris, a woman and a man with multiple limb injuries and shrapnel wounds were taken to the hospital. A fire broke out at a civilian infrastructure facility as a result of the enemy attack. A residential building and an outbuilding were destroyed, 14 private houses and 1 car were damaged.

DTEK informed that in the morning, as a result of another russian attack, shrapnel damaged power grids, leaving 1,023 families in Vyshhorod region without electricity. Power engineers have restored power supply to all consumers in Kyiv oblast left without electricity as a result of the large-scale russian attack.

Serhii Popko, Head of the KCMA, informed that the russian military used X-101/X-555/X-55 cruise missiles from Tu-95MS strategic bombers during the missile attack on the capital. The air alert in Kyiv lasted over three hours. The missiles came at Kyiv from different directions with no casualties or resulting damage.

On the Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism, foreign guests visited Kyiv oblast to witness the consequences of russia’s armed aggression 79 years after the end of World War II. The delegation members visited Moshchun and Borodianka, honoured the memory of Ukrainian defenders and civilians who were killed as a result of the russian invasion.The foreign delegation included about forty mayors of European cities and representatives of other countries that support Ukraine in its fight against russian aggression. 

In Kyiv, at the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in World War II, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy presented state awards on the occasion of the Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism. The state awards were presented to members of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and relatives and friends of the fallen heroes.

Kyiv City Council awarded the Kyiv brigades that continue to fight in the most dangerous areas of the frontline. The “Honor. Glory. State” medals were awarded to 18 soldiers.

Kyiv Customs donated special equipment for the construction of AFU defensive fortifications. Guided by the legal regime of martial law, the military units received four belarusian-made tractors, which, despite Ukraine’s sanctions against the Belarusian tractor plant, entrepreneurs tried to illegally import into Ukraine.

According to Volodymyr Karpliuk, co-founder of Irpin Restoration Foundation, the collection of poetry, prose, and artwork for the Children of War project ended on 1 May. 104 children from the de-occupied cities and towns of Kyiv oblast sent their poetry and prose works, and another 73 submitted drawings for publication in a book to be published this year. The book will be printed at the expense of the Brave company.

Zhytomyr oblast

In Zhytomyr oblast, due to a power shortage caused by russia’s massive missile and drone attacks, evening power cut-off schedules apply to businesses and industries. Residents are urged to save electricity during peak hours.

A regional conference “Strategic Planning: From Approved Document to Successful Implementation” was held in Zhytomyr with the participation of the USAID HOVERLA project partner communities. The project involves 11 oblast communities.

On 6 May, veteran Oleksandr Shvetsov from Zhytomyr joined the charity marathon of his fellow soldier Serhii Khrapko, who is walking from Kyiv to Boryspil to raise money for the rehabilitation of his seriously wounded comrade. The veterans hope that their every step will attract people’s attention and they will raise the necessary funds for their fellow soldier, Oleksandr Nadtochii, who volunteered to fight in 2015 and during the full-scale war.

Sumy oblast

The RMA reported that at night and in the morning, russians attacked Sumy oblast’s border areas three times. Bilopillia (4 explosions) and Esman (8 explosions) communities were shelled.

Yesterday the russian military attacked Sumy oblast 10 times and a total of 49 mortar and artillery strikes were recorded. Khotin, Yunakivka, Myropillia, Bilopillia, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka communities were shelled.

Sumy oblast budget for 2024 has been amended. In particular, over UAH 10m was allocated for the shelter construction. The shelters are planned for arrangement in Kosivshchyna and Hlynsk special schools, as well as in Shtepivka training and rehabilitation centre.

Oleksandr Mordvaniuk, Centre for Combatants Director, informed that social support, psychological assistance, physical therapy and hydrotherapy rooms are among the services provided by the rehabilitation department in Sumy Centre to combatants and their families and families of fallen soldiers. 1,700 people have received over 14,000 services at the centre this year. All services of the centre are free of charge. 

Chernihiv oblast

According to the SBGS report, over the past day, russian troops fired three times. A total of 25 explosions were recorded: Semenivka community – 15 attacks from a grenade launcher and cannon artillery; Snovsk community – 10 mortar attacks.

The President’s Office reported that in Yahidne village in Chernihiv oblast Volodymyr Zelenskyy made a recording on the occasion of the Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism in World War II.

Viacheslav Chaus, Head of the Presidential Administration, informed about a meeting with representatives of the German-Ukrainian Blue and Yellow Cross Society and the Euroshelter charity organisation. They arrived in the oblast within the framework of the Second International Summit of Cities on the basis of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities under the President of Ukraine.

In Chernihiv, a veterans’ space is being created in the premises that were leased to the Heartland Veterans’ Community of Ukraine NGO last July. The centre is being renovated by war veterans who were injured in combat. The veterans’ space is scheduled to open at the end of this year.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

The enemy carried out a massive missile and drone strike on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. The enemy continues to attack Nikopol region, hitting the area with kamikaze drones and artillery in the evening. Region’s  centre, Marhanets and Chervonohryhorivka communities were attacked. A 42-year-old man was injured in the shelling in Nikopol and hospitalised in moderate condition. Several private houses, a couple of outbuildings, 2 garages, as many cars, a gas pipeline and a power line were damaged. According to the updated data, a 6-year-old girl and a 51-year-old man were injured in yesterday’s attacks on Nikopol region. They were provided with medical aid. 

4 Kalibr cruise missiles, 2 X-101/X-555 cruise missiles and 2 X-59/X-69 guided missiles were shot down over the oblast. 

In the afternoon, an enemy rocket was destroyed in Dnipro region. The falling debris caused fires. No one was injured.

From morning till evening the occupiers were shelling Nikopol region, with a total of 17 attacks with kamikaze drones and artillery. The region’s centre, Marhanets, Myrove and Pokrovsk communities were shelled. People were not injured. A private enterprise was on fire, 12 private houses, 6 outbuildings, a car, an infrastructure facility, power lines and a gas pipeline were damaged.

Vinnytsia oblast

​​In Vinnytsia oblast, the enemy hit a critical infrastructure facility. The missile strike caused a large-scale fire, but none of the facility’s employees or civilians were injured. 

The documentary film 20 Days in Mariupol was shown in Vinnytsia Kvadrat, with a subsequent discussion with Mykola Osychenko, President of Mariupol TV from 2019 to 2023, who was a participant in the events, and Yevhen Tuzov, commandant of the largest shelter in blockaded Mariupol, who saved about 7,000 people.

Kirovohrad oblast

Andrii Raikovych, Head of RMA, reported that a critical infrastructure facility was damaged in Oleksandriia region as a result of an enemy missile attack in Kirovohrad oblast. An 8-year-old child was injured. All relevant services are working on site. Experts are examining the extent of damage to each household and private garages. Almost 60 yards have been preliminarily inspected. The same number of applications have already been received from local residents.

Poltava oblast

Filip Pronin, Head of RMA, reported that the russian army hit an energy infrastructure facility in Poltava region. A fire broke out after the UAV strike. According to preliminary data, no one was killed or injured. 

Cherkasy oblast

Ihor Taburets, Head of RMA, reported that a drone was destroyed over Cherkasy oblast at night. A house was damaged. No one was injured. 

In Cherkasy, entrepreneurs whose businesses suffered losses due to the fall of a russian missile on the Central Hotel on 21 September, 2023, began receiving financial compensation for lost and damaged property.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Early in the morning the russians attacked Zaporizhzhia with rockets. Zaporizhzhia Regional Prosecutor’s Office reported that the strikes hit the territory of a recreational park, a garage cooperative, and critical civilian infrastructure. It was also reported that the Palace of Culture of Energy Workers and an animal shelter were damaged as a result of the russian shelling. A russian shell hit within five meters of one of the enclosures, injuring five dogs, with two others still missing.

Yesterday the occupiers launched 299 strikes on 11 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast. russian army carried out missile strikes on Zaporizhzhia and conducted three aerial attacks on Komyshuvakha and Novoandriivka. 99 unmanned aerial vehicles targeted Huliaipole, Levadne, Robotyne, Mala Tokmachka, Malynivka and Novoandriivka. 14 MLRS strikes hit Huliaipole, Mala Tokmachka and Robotyne.183 artillery bombardments were aimed at the territories of Orikhiv, Huliaipole, Zaliznychne, Mala Tokmachka, Novoandriivka, Robotyne, Levadne, Malynivka and Piatyhatky. There were 14 reports of residential buildings being destroyed. One man was injured during an enemy airstrike on Zaporizhzhia oblast.

On 7 May, a fire broke out in Komyshuvakha as a result of russian shelling. Firefighters extinguished the fire, which engulfed a tractor, dry grass, and debris, covering an area of ​​250 sq m.

The enemy attacked Ukrainian positions six times in near Staramaiorske in Donetsk oblast, Robotyne, and northwest of Verbove in Zaporizhzhia oblast.

Mykolaiv oblast

Yesterday, on 7 May, the enemy attacked the waters of Ochakiv community twice with artillery fire. There were no casualties.

Odesa oblast

The number of casualties due to the russian rocket attack on Odesa on 29 April has increased to seven people. Another man died in the hospital. As of the evening of 7 May, 15 people who were injured as a result of russian rocket attacks on Odesa on 29, 30 April and 1 May were being treated in hospitals in Odesa and the oblast.

The soldiers of the Khymera unit of the Chief Intelligence Directorate (HUR) conducted the first training session for civilians in Odesa. The training included basic physical training, weapon handling, and tactical medicine. Military personnel currently have a break between combat tasks, so they decided to conduct training for potential volunteers.

Kherson oblast

Today in the morning, on 8 May, russia attacked the civilian and  railway infrastructure in Kherson. As a result of enemy strikes, the tracks at the city’s station were damaged. The movement of train No. 121/122 Kyiv — Kherson — Kyiv was temporarily restricted to Mykolaiv. Later, Ukrzaliznytsia reported the completion of repairs to the damaged track at the Kherson station. Tomorrow’s flights will proceed according to schedule.

Additionally, civilian infrastructure was damaged due to enemy strikes, leaving parts of the city without electricity.

Yesterday, the enemy attacked Bilozirka, Stanislav, Sadove, Blahovishchenske, Poniativka, Inzhenerne, Kizomyss, Komyshany, Ivanivka, Chervonyi Maiak, Kachkarivka, Dariivka, Ulianivka, and the city of Kherson. As a result of russian strikes, over 100 objects were damaged, one person was killed, and three others were injured, including two police officers. Specifically, a multi-storey building, 91 private houses, an administrative building, an educational institution, a gas pipeline, agricultural machinery, a bus, and private cars were damaged.

Later, it became known about the fourth casualty as a result of the night russian shelling in Bilozirka. A woman suffered a concussion and contusion.

Eleven more children from Kherson oblast were evacuated from temporary occupied territories. Two orphaned girls and nine children with parents or one of them were returned to Ukrainian-controlled territory. Currently, the children are in a safe place, receiving necessary medical and psychological assistance. 78 children from Kherson oblast have been successfully returned to Ukrainian-controlled territory since the beginning of 2024.

Volunteers provided powerful portable generators for Kherson community. The Jackery portable charging stations will serve as reliable backup power sources for both household and emergency situations.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

Lutsk City Council reported that the community purchased the 1st batch of 13 Mitsubishi L200 pickups. Last week, 4 cars were sent to the military on the Eastern Front. The remaining 9 will be sent according to requests from military units.

Zakarpattia oblast

Viktor Mykyta, Head of the RMA, met with the Protez Foundation team. They discussed interaction within the implementation of the project of the 4.5.0 Recovery Center regional rehabilitation centre, the possibility of sending young medics from Zakarpattia to the USA for training and advanced training with the support of Protez Foundation, and also agreed to work together on finding donors to finance the prosthetic needs of Ukrainian heroes.

Zakarpattia RMA and Protez Foundation signed a Memorandum of Cooperation to help in the recovery and rehabilitation of fighters who lost their health while defending the independence of Ukraine in the fight against the invaders.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Ivano-Frankivsk City Council reported that the community sent 30 FPV drones to the 36th Marine Corps Brigade and 30 FPVs and a complex EW installation to the 109th battalion.

Lviv oblast

Around 5am, the occupiers hit the energy generation facility in Chervonohrad region with cruise missiles. There were two sources of ignition. 35 firefighters and 7 units of special equipment were involved in extinguishing the fire that started at a critical infrastructure facility in Chervonohrad region due to a package hit. At the time of their arrival, the burning area was 100 sq m. Firefighters extinguished the fire. There is no threat to people living nearby.

Also, due to the impact of the russian package, a critical energy infrastructure facility in Strii region was damaged.

During the repeated air alert, which was announced in the region at 6:27am, the occupier attacked Lviv oblast with “daggers”. Critical and residential infrastructure were not affected. All life support systems of Lviv oblast are working normally.

According to preliminary information, 12 enemy missiles flew into Lviv oblast that night. Of them, 8 soldiers of the West Air Command and mobile fire groups were shot down.

Rivne oblast

In Rivne oblast, psychological support is provided free of charge to veterans and their family members, practising the provision of psychological assistance in the “same experience” format. Currently, specialists work with two groups – the military itself, as well as the wives and mothers of defenders. The key purpose of such groups is support and help with difficult conditions and situations.

Ternopil oblast

Ternopil city council reported that in Ternopil Center of Vocational and Technical Education will be installed a memorial stele and a memorial table to the defender Andrii Terebiy.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Khmelnytskyi NPP held a working meeting of the group on the implementation of the state barrier-free policy. Those present reviewed the state of implementation of the planned activities at Khmelnytsky NPP facilities, taking into account the key task of the National Strategy for the Creation of a Barrier-Free Space – to ensure unhindered access of all population groups to various spheres of life.

Chernivtsi oblast

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, presented the Golden Star Order to the family of Ruslan Prus, fallen soldier from Bukovyna. He was killed during a combat mission near Bakhmut. The soldier is survived by his wife, daughter, father and sister.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine reported that Latvia within the framework of the IT-coalition, transferred to Ukraine communication equipment worth about €100,000. The equipment should provide brigades with communication at the tactical level.

Denmark decided to allocate 200m kr to support Ukrainian arms manufacturers. This is actually the 1st case of assistance to Ukraine with Ukrainian weapons.

Kaisa Ollongren, Minister of Defense of the Netherlands, stated that the country plans to start sending F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine in the fall.

Olaf Scholz, German Chancellor, supported spending 90% of the proceeds from frozen russian assets on the purchase of weapons for Ukraine

Andrii Yermak, Head of the Office of the President, and Anders Fogh Rasmussen, NATO Secretary General in 2009-2014, held another online meeting of the International Working Group on Security Issues and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine. They discussed the draft report of the International Working Group, which contains a detailed justification and specific proposals regarding the future membership of Ukraine in NATO, ensuring sustainable peace and deterring the aggressor country. It will be published in the near future.

Antonio Tajani, Head of the Italian Foreign Ministry, stated weapons that they sent to the Armed Forces of Ukraine can only be used within the borders of Ukraine.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, had a phone conversation with Ulises Correia-i-Silva, Prime Minister of Cape Verde. They discussed the necessary efforts to attract as many countries of the continent as possible to participate in the summit.
