The Ukrainian Defense Forces continue to hold back the russian invaders’ offensives, as the enemy forces persist in destroying Ukrainian cities and villages with air and artillery strikes.
On 8 August, there were 56 combat engagements on the front line.
The hottest spots are currently towards Lyman and Pokrovsk. Ukrainian defenders are taking all necessary measures to prevent breaches in their defenses.
Today, the occupiers intensified their use of aviation against the border settlement of Sumy oblast. So far, 16 airstrikes have been reported, with 23 guided bombs targeting areas such as Pryvillia, Pavlivka, Basivka, Novenke, Yunakivka, Kyianytsia, Yablunivka, Pushkarivka, Kondrativka and Mohrytsia. Additionally, the aggressor has shelled settlements including Pokrovka, Khliborob, Bachivsk, Yunakivka, Kruzhok, Buniakine and Brusky with artillery.
Towards Kharkiv, there have been four combat engagements near Vovchansk since the beginning of the day, with two of them ongoing.
Towards Kupiansk, russian forces unsuccessfully attempted one assault near Synkivka.
Towards Lyman, the enemy attacked in the vicinities of Makiivka, Nevske, Terny, and the Serebriansky forest. Since the start of the day, there have been 15 engagements in this direction, with four still ongoing. The situation remains under control.
The enemy continues to attempt to break through Ukrainian defenses towards Siversk but is met with strong resistance from Ukrainian defenders. Near Verkhnokamianske, Ivano-Darivka, Spirne and Vyimka, the occupiers made eight attempts to push back Ukrainian units.
Towards Kramatorsk, russian forces tried six times to dislodge Ukrainian units from their positions since the beginning of the day. Ukrainian soldiers repelled four assaults near Chasiv Yar, Kalynivka and Ivanivske, with two more attacks still ongoing.
Towards Toretsk, the enemy, supported by assault and bomber aviation, attacked Ukrainian positions seven times. Currently, two engagements are ongoing near Niu-York.
The situation remains tense towards Pokrovsk, where fierce battles are ongoing in the vicinities of Kalynove, Vozdvyzhenka, Novooleksandrivka, Zhelanne, and Karlivka. The enemy has made ten attempts to storm Ukrainian positions, with battles continuing in five locations.
Towards Kurakhove, the invaders attacked Ukrainian units once since the start of the day, attempting to advance near Krasnohorivka.
Towards Vremivka, two enemy assaults towards Vodyane and Vuhledar were repelled, with one battle still ongoing.
In the vicinity of Mala Tokmachka towards Orikhiv, the occupiers made one attempt to advance but faced a strong response. The enemy also used aviation against Huliaipole.
Ukrainian Armed Forces are taking all necessary steps to restrain the enemy’s advance.
Mykhailo Fedorov, Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Transformation, reported that for the first time, Ukraine has announced a tender for the purchase of domestic FPV drones. The drones will be super-technological, using machine vision for target guidance.
Eighteen women, who received amnesty and were released from prison, have already joined the ranks of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. According to the Main Directorate of Communications of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, they are serving in positions such as riflewomen and medics.
Recent war events in the east of Ukraine
Kharkiv oblast
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported on the situation towards Kharkiv as of 4pm that two battles are ongoing near Vovchansk, two more russian assaults were repelled by the Defence Forces.
Towards Kupiansk, russians attacked once near Synkivka since the beginning of the day, but the attack was repelled.
Viktor Kovalenko, Head of Zolochiv community, stated that a russian UAV fell in a field in Zolochiv community at around 11:40am.
At 2:45pm, russians attacked Hlushkivka village of Kurylivka community, Kupiansk region. As a result of the shelling, grass caught on fire on an area of about 30 sq m.
At 10:20am, russians attacked Kupiansk. A car was damaged as a result of UAV shelling.
Towards Kharkiv, the number of attacks increased to three over the day. Ukrainian defence forces repelled enemy assaults near Vovchansk and Tykhe.
Towards Kupiansk, there were five russian attempts to advance near Petropavlivka, Kolisnykivka and towards Novoosynove.
The RMA noted a significant decrease in the use of guided aerial bombs. Previously, 30 to 60 UAVs were recorded per day, but now only a few bombs and two rockets were launched.
In the border areas of the oblast, the educational process should take place in protective structures. Construction of a network of safe shelters where children can study offline continues. At the same time, students will have the opportunity to choose distance learning.
Donetsk oblast
The 53rd Mechanised Brigade posted on their Facebook page saying that they returned the Ukrainian flag to a school in Niu-York. The soldiers also destroyed the russian tricolour, which the occupiers had installed on the roof of the building a few days ago.
Serhii Horbunov, Head of Kostiantynivka CMA, reported that in the morning of 8 August, the russian army shelled Kostiantynivka. Two men were killed who were near the site of the hit. One of them died on the spot, the other in hospital.
Russian troops dropped an aerial bomb on Selidove, Donetsk region. As a result of the attack, two people died, another 11 were injured, including a child
Serhii Horbunov added that around 12pm, the russian occupation army struck Kostiantynivka for the second time in a day. The town was probably hit with a Grom-1 rocket launcher in an open area away from the residential area. There was one hit near the car park, in an open area. A lot of damaged glass windows in the high-rise buildings located nearby. 10 facades, many windows, a service station building, a petrol station, car parks, 12 cars, four minibuses and a police car.
The General Staff reported that Vozdvyzhenka, Zhelanne, Hrodivka and Karlivka are the settlements towards Pokrovsk where russia has focused most of its efforts on capturing. Yesterday the russian army attacked 28 settlements in the frontline.
The occupation forces also continue to storm Toretsk agglomeration. In addition to 11 attacks, the russians launched 19 airstrikes on the city and its suburbs and dropped about 30 guided bombs. The russian army stormed Chasiv Yar seven times. Yesterday russian troops struck the frontline and residential areas 3,081 times. According to Donetsk police, 13 settlements were hit by enemy attacks: Kurakhove, Lyman, Mykolaivka, Novohrodivka, Toretsk, Novoekonomichne, Bohoiavlenka, Mykolaivka, Mykhailivka, Orlivka, Pleshchyivka, Promin, Uspenivka. 9 civilian objects were damaged.
The russian army shelled Mykhailivka with artillery, killing two civilians.
As a result of hostile attacks, one person was injured in each of Novohrodivka, Orlivka, Promin and Pleshchiivka.
The invaders shelled Bohoiavlenka village using Uragan multiple rocket launchers. There was no information on casualties or damage.
Two private houses were destroyed as a result of artillery shelling in Kurakhove.
Also russians dropped 4 KAB bombs on Toretsk. There were no casualties.
In addition, it was reported that a civilian was wounded in Antonivka yesterday.
The Prosecutor General’s Office said that law enforcers have launched an investigation into the killing of a Ukrainian soldier in captivity. The murder of the Azov regiment defender from multiple injuries he sustained in captivity was classified as a violation of the laws and customs of war, combined with premeditated murder.
Mariupol Mayor Vadym Boichenko said that four medical institutions in occupied Mariupol have been relocated and provided services. Five more are currently in the process of relocation. Mariupol hospitals are being restored to the government-controlled territory of Ukraine to ensure that services in Mariupol can be resumed as soon as possible after the city is de-occupied.
Luhansk oblast
Yesterday russians hit Nevske with cannon artillery. As a result of the hit, two houses caught fire. There was no one in the houses at the time of the hit.
The enemy also hit Makiivka with cannon artillery. In addition, multiple rocket launchers and drones were used in Makiivka and Nevske.
The invaders tried to advance near the above-mentioned settlements and in the Serebryansky forest. All attacks were repelled by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
A 63-year-old woman from Nevske was evacuated to Kharkiv oblast. Under an agreement with the host community, Luhansk residents were provided with free housing. Krasnorichensk military administration will take care of the issues she needs to resolve.
In the so-called “lpr”, the russian information campaign is gaining momentum regarding the consequences that locals will experience if they refuse to give up their russian passports. From 1 January 2025, the occupiers will deprive them of the opportunity to receive social benefits as defined by law, and completely close access to free medical care. The invaders also threaten to make the employment process as difficult as possible and increase the tax rate.
In the absence of a russian passport, starting next year, Ukrainians in the occupied Luhansk oblast will be considered by the russians to be persons who are obliged to stay in the territory of the russian federation in accordance with the requirements for foreign citizens and stateless persons. That is, to be registered in the migration register or to have a temporary residence permit or residence permit.

Kyiv oblast
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with a bipartisan delegation of the U.S. House of Representatives consisting of Donald Norcross, Celeste Meloy and James Panetta in Kyiv. They discussed the situation on the battlefield and the development of defence industries in Ukraine.
The Security Service of Ukraine reported that Law enforcement officers have collected evidence against two russian soldiers who could have been involved in the death of Colonel Oleksii Telizhenko, the assistant rector of the SSU Academy, during the occupation of Bucha.
It is noted that at the beginning of the russian invasion, the defendants in the case carried out “cleansing” in the occupied part of Kyiv oblast. In particular, Oleksiy Telizhenko was imprisoned on 6 March 2022 in Bucha and brought to a command post in a forest belt near the village of Vorzel. After the de-occupation of Kyiv oblast, the body of the tortured SSU officer was found at the crime scene. The bodies of 8 murdered people in civilian clothes were also found there.
A large meeting was held in Kyiv under the chairmanship of Ukrainian Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets with representatives of state authorities and family members of captured and missing soldiers. More than 300 family members of soldiers of the 36th Marine Brigade joined the meeting. Representatives of the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, the Joint Centre of the Security Service of Ukraine, the NIB, the Secretariat of the Commissioner for the European Court of Human Rights, the Ukrainian Navy and the ICRC provided answers to the questions of the audience.
The city council reported that a memorial plaque was unveiled in Bucha in honour of soldier Volodymyr Kovalskyi, who died during the fighting for Kyiv oblast. The man lost both his legs while performing a combat mission in the ATO in 2016, but continued to be actively involved in public activities. At the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Volodymyr volunteered to join Bucha Guard. On 27 February, during a fierce battle near a supermarket, he heroically covered the retreat of his comrades, giving his life for the freedom of Ukraine.
Tetiev Mayor Bohdan Balahura informed that lawyers of Kharkiv Human Rights Protection Group will come to Tetiiv community in Kyiv oblast. The specialists will provide free legal aid to residents affected by the hostilities.
In total, 725 children from privileged categories of Kyiv oblast have already had a rest over the summer. The rehabilitation is funded by both government and charitable organisations. Children from oblast have the opportunity to relax in health resorts in Zakarpattia, Kyiv and Ivano-Frankivsk oblasts.
Zhytomyr oblast
Residents of Zhytomyr oblast can receive free rehabilitation in 14 medical institutions that have signed an agreement with the National Health Service of Ukraine on healthcare rehabilitation. Under the existing agreements, about UAH 53m has already been paid to medical institutions in Zhytomyr oblast under the Rehabilitation Care for Adults and Children in Inpatient Settings package.
On 10 August, the sixth stage of the second all-Ukrainian round of the Strong of Ukraine adaptive sports competition among veterans will take place in Zviahel. The participants will compete in rowing on a simulator, bench press, aero bikes and kettlebell snatch. The competition is organised by the Ukrainian Strongman Federation.
Sumy oblast
Volodymyr Artiukh, Head of Sumy Regional Military Administration, reported that at around 11am on 8 August, russian troops attacked Mohrytsia village from the air. Two brothers died as a result of the air strike. One was 23 years old, the other was 6 years old.
Oleksii Drozdenko, Head of Sumy CMA, informed that in the afternoon of 8 August, an airstrike was carried out on one of the villages of Bytytsia starostat. Private houses and cars were destroyed and damaged. One person was injured, no one was killed.
According to the head Oleksii Drozdenko, in the morning of 8 August, russian military shelled Stetskivka village. As a result of the attack, buildings were damaged. The shelling damaged the facades of a school and residential buildings. People were not injured. A headquarters for the elimination of the consequences of the shelling is currently being set up in Stetskivka.
At night and in the morning, the russians fired 23 times at the border areas and settlements of Sumy oblast. 50 explosions were recorded. Khotin, Yunakivka, Bilopillia, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Nova Sloboda, Hlukhiv, Esman communities were shelled.
Yesterday the russians fired 26 times at the border areas and settlements of Sumy oblast. 61 explosions were recorded. Sumy, Stetske, Khotin, Yunakivka, Krasnopillia, Vorozhbiansk, Nova Sloboda, Esman, Seredyna-Buda communities were shelled.
Seredyna-Buda community: russians dropped 3 mines on the territory of the community. There was also artillery shelling (8 explosions) and an attack by an FPV drone (1 explosion).
Krasnopillia community: there were attacks by FPV drones (4 explosions), mortar attacks (6 explosions) and grenade launchers (5 explosions).

The National Police of Sumy oblast reported that as a result of shelling from the territory of russia over the past day – 7 August – the premises of the village council, civilian houses and cars were damaged in Sumy oblast. The shelling from the territory of russia damaged the premises of a village council, an apartment building, five private households, two outbuildings, trucks and agricultural machinery. The North OC clarified that there was one explosion as a result of the shelling of the village of Manukhivka, probably from a guided aerial bomb. The shelling damaged a communal facility, four warehouses and a private house.
Mandatory evacuation of 5 communities in Sumy oblast began. According to the decision of the Defence Council and the order of the Head of the Military District Administration, mandatory evacuation is taking place from 23 settlements of 5 communities in Sumy district – Krasnopillia, Mykolaivka rural, Myropillia, Yunakivka and Khotin – which fall within the enemy’s firefighting zone. International partners and Ukrainian volunteer organisations are actively assisting the communities of Sumy oblast with the evacuation.
Two more military administrations have been initiated in Sumy oblast to ensure full evacuation measures, establish communication and coordination between various government agencies, and provide appropriate assistance and various types of services to residents of border communities. The Sumy Defence Council supported the proposal to establish Velyka Pysarivka and Seredyna-Buda city military administrations.
Chernihiv oblast
The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine reported that the russian military attacked the village of Yeline in Snovsk community yesterday. A total of six attacks from cannon artillery and one mortar attack were recorded.
Recently, a department for veterans’ policy was established within the regional military administration, and similar departments have been set up in district administrations. This makes it possible to focus attention on the problematic issues of veterans and family members of the deceased, as well as to ensure the most effective principle of “peer-to-peer” work. These departments are staffed by specialists with experience in social protection, as well as veterans or family members of military personnel.
The regional military administration informed that the second mobile pharmacy of the Chernihiv oblast’s medicines utility has started operating. Today, residents of 7 villages of the Mensk and Koriukivka communities were able to purchase medicines and use prescriptions under the Affordable Medicines programme directly in their locality.
Iryna Vereshchuk, Vice Prime Minister and Minister for Reintegration of the Temporarily Occupied Territories of Ukraine, announced that residents of the 10km zone on the border of Chernihiv oblast will start receiving money for firewood from September 2024. The funds in the amount of UAH 21,600 will be transferred to private households’ personal accounts. According to her, the relevant agreements have already been reached with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine
Dnipropetrovsk oblast
According to Mykola Lukashuk, Head of the Regional Council, the defenders of the sky shot down an enemy`s missile and a reconnaissance drone over the oblast at night. The occupants did not leave Nikopol region alone. They attacked the region center, Myrove and Pokrovsk at night and early in the morning. A 12-year-old boy was injured in Pokrovsk, he sustained shrapnel wounds. Two private houses were damaged.
The occupants shelled a hospital in the region center of Nikopol. A 50-year-old man, an employee of the institution, was killed. A 74-year-old resident of Pokrovsk was also wounded. In total, there were more than three dozen attacks in the area. The enemy fired at Nikopol, Myrove, Pokrovsk, Chervonohryhorivka and Marhanets. A hospital, infrastructure, a children’s center, an apartment building, a utility company, a fire station, an agricultural company, 4 cars, garages, and power lines were damaged.
Vinnytsia oblast
Valentyna Liaskivska from Koziatyn, Vinnytsia oblast, has been baking cookies for Ukraine’s defenders since 2022. During this time, the woman has baked more than 3.5 tons of cookies, which volunteers send to the front.
Kirovohrad oblast

Zaporizhzhia oblast
On 7 August, russian invaders launched 507 attacks on 11 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast.
The enemy conducted 4 airstrikes on Lobkove, Piatykhatky, Malynivka and Novoandriivka, while 323 drones of various modifications were used to strike Huliaipole, Novoandriivka, Robotyne, Mala Tokmachka, Levadne and Malynivka.
The invaders launched 3 MLRS strikes on Robotyne and Mala Tokmachka.
The russian forces carried out 177 artillery strikes on the territories of Stepnohirsk, Huliaipole, Novoandriivka, Robotyne, Mala Tokmachka, Malynivka, Levadne, Pryiutne and Myrne.
According to the head of the RMA, 6 reports of damage to residential buildings and infrastructure were received, but there were no casualties among the civilian population.
As reported by Berdiansk Border Detachment, at night, the enemy attacked Ukrainian defenders’ positions in Zaporizhzhia oblast with 8 UAVs launched from different directions. However, this massive attack was repelled by border guards.
Yesterday, in Zaporizhzhia oblast, servicemen of the Main Intelligence Directorate struck the invaders’ trucks and personnel. Ukrainian forces destroyed 2 Ural trucks, a Gazelle truck, 3 UAZ vehicles and an quad bike. Also, drones targeted the enemy military personnel.
Mykolaiv oblast
According to Mykolaiv RMA, on 7 August, at 2:37pm, the enemy carried out an artillery strike on Kutsurub community. There were no casualties reported.
Berlin startup representatives from Horus Prosthetics arrived in Mykolaiv with their equipment to provide free prosthetics to patients in one of the city’s hospitals. This decision was influenced by Mykolaiv’s reputation, its anti-corruption policies and transparency.
Odesa oblast
On the night of 8 August, Odesa oblast became a target of another russian missile attack. The enemy struck Ukraine using various types of weapons, including Iskander-M ballistic missiles, Kh-59 guided air missiles and Shahed UAVs. Thanks to the coordinated actions of mobile fire groups, anti-aircraft missile forces and electronic warfare units of the Ukrainian Air Force, Odesa successfully repelled the attack.
2 strike UAVs that could have caused significant damage to infrastructure and civilian objects were shot down in the sky over the oblast. In total, 2 Kh-59 guided air missiles and 4 attack drones were shot down in Odesa, Kherson and Kirovohrad oblasts.
Odesa Mayor Hennadii Trukhanov, met with the newly appointed UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Ukraine, Mr. Matthias Schmale. Mr. Schmale was introduced by Ms. Denise Brown, the outgoing UN Humanitarian Coordinator/Permanent Coordinator in Ukraine. The new UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Ukraine reported that his main task is to continue the cooperation started by Ms. Brown. He will also continue to inform the international community about the situation in Ukraine so that other countries do not forget about the brutal war happening here.
Oleksandr Lonchak, Head of the Department of Education and Science of Odesa Regional State Administration, reported that centres for teaching the updated subject Defence of Ukraine are being created in Odesa oblast. Over UAH 110m have been allocated for this purpose. Locations for studying the new subject will appear in every community, with several in large cities. This possibility is also being considered at vocational education institutions and colleges.
Kherson oblast
On 7 August, russian forces carried out attacks on 17 settlements in Kherson oblast, injuring 8 people.
The enemy attacked Romashkove, Kizomys, Mykhailivka, Novoberyslav, Chornobaivka, Stanislav, Antonivka, Kachkarivka, Veletenske, Tiahynka, Lvove, Oleksandrivka, Kalynivske, Blahodativka, Prydniprovske, Sadove and Kherson.
The invaders targeted critical infrastructure, an educational institution, administrative buildings and a food establishment, as well as residential areas, including 9 apartment buildings and 11 private houses. The attacks also damaged utility structures, a gas pipeline and private vehicles in the oblast.
At night, Ukrainian air defence shot down a russian Shahed-131/136 kamikaze drone over Kherson oblast.
The russian troops dropped explosives from a drone in the outskirts of Kherson, specifically in Antonivka, injuring a 46-year-old woman and 2 men aged 46 and 56. All sustained blast injuries, concussions and shrapnel wounds. At the time of the attack, the people were outdoors. Later, a 70-year-old woman was injured in another drone strike, suffering a gunshot wound to the neck.
The enemy launched a missile strike on the territory of Kalynivka community in Beryslav region, causing a fire in dry vegetation. Artillery shelling damaged 5 private houses in Sadove, Stanislav, Antonivka and Novoberyslav.
FPV drones targeted the coastal area of Kherson, Antonivka, Mykhailivka and Novoberyslav, damaging 3 residential houses and a summer kitchen.
As a result of drone attacks, 2 private houses in Romashkove and Veletenske were damaged.
On 8 August, around 11am, russian occupiers struck Kherson. Due to the enemy shelling, a 23-year-old woman suffered a blast injury and concussion.
While working in a field near Myroliubivka village, a 34-year-old tractor driver was injured due to the detonation of a russian mine. The injured man, with multiple injuries, was taken to the hospital.

Volyn oblast
Lutsk community sent 2 Mitsubishi L200 cars to the newly created Separate Rifle Battalion of the Police thanks to the community budget.
Lutsk City Council sent 8 Sova counter-battery reconnaissance complexes to 4 brigades of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which perform combat missions in Kharkiv oblast. This optical-electronic complex allows you to observe the firing positions of the enemy in the dark.
Zakarpattia oblast
The RMA held a meeting with the management of the Proliska public organisation, which comprehensively helps IDPs in Zakarpattia from 2022. This week, 34 children of fallen, missing and captured defenders of Ukraine returned from the Lithuanian town of Kaltanenai, where they spent a week in the Adventure Expedition camp. This year, the children of defenders from Lviv became participants in such an expedition camp for the 1st time.
Rivne oblast
Oleksandr Koval, Head of Rivne RMA, announced that confiscated property, namely 850 litres of fuel, 10 chainsaws and 2 cars, are donated to the Security and Defense Forces of Ukraine. It is about the property that was confiscated from the state revenue by the Department of Enforcement of Decisions in the oblast and Rivne Customs.
Rivne oblast received 10 branch shredders worth UAH 6m from the USAID HOVERLA project. Such crushers have a significant reserve of power, in an hour you can prepare up to 14 cubic metres of firewood.
