What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

Kyiv City State Administration informed that 130 educational institutions out of 195 damaged by russian shelling have already been restored in Kyiv. 65 more institutions are in the process of being rebuilt. In June alone, another 38 educational institutions were damaged due to further attack, mostly facades, windows, doors and roofs. Experts from ‘Kyivexpertise’ are inspecting the buildings and preparing documentation to fund the reconstruction.

Regional Military Administration reported that in Irpin, at 3b Myru Street, a multi-storey building damaged as a result of russian aggression is being overhauled. The building has 96 apartments. The facility is 80% fixed. It is planned for commissioning in August 2025. Other buildings damaged by the russians, as well as the city’s central stadium ‘Champion’ are being restored.

On 29 June, the NGO Ukrainian Women’s Guard held an art therapy meeting for women in Kyiv oblast. The group included IDP women, wives of military personnel, and mothers of large families. The topic of the session was: “Watercolour painting – a description of my feelings”. The event is implemented as part of the initiative “Women. Peace. Security: Local Needs – Local Solutions” initiative with the support of the Ukrainian Women’s Fund and the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

On 5 July, the Kyiv Regional Centre for Preparing the Population for National Resistance will hold free training for the public. The programme includes tactical training, tactical medicine and engineering training.

In Kyiv, the Medical Rehabilitation Centre received 65 modern laptops from Taiwanese company Acer. The equipment will help improve the efficiency of medical staff and become a useful tool for educational opportunities, communication and psychological support for patients and doctors.

Bucha City Council reported that on 6 July, a charity festival “Lokalist” is being organised in Bucha, a space for creativity, unity and good deeds. In addition to entertaining, participants will raise money to donate to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Zhytomyr oblast

The Chernyakhiv village council reported that in the village of Vydybor of the Chernyakhiv community, a soldier Roman Tkachuk, released from captivity, was welcomed. He was exchanged as part of the “thousand-for-thousand” prisoner exchange. The hero was greeted by community leaders, starostas of Vydybory and neighbouring starostas, relatives, friends, and fellow townspeople.

The Zhytomyr City Council’s Capital Construction Department reported that shelters for Zhytomyr lyceums No. 7 and No. 8 will be completed by 1 September 2025.

Sumy oblast

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that over the past day, there were 19 combat engagements with russian forces on Northern Slobozhanskyi and Kursk fronts. Enemy troops launched 14 airstrikes and conducted 323 shelling attacks, including 2 strikes by multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS). Starting 1 July, the General Staff’s map designates part of Sumy oblast as a “red zone”, indicating heightened danger. This includes areas near Basivka, Novenke, Yunakivka, Loknia, Vodolahy, Bilovody, and Kindrativka.

Oleh Hryhorov, Regional Head, informed that on the evening of 2 July, russian forces launched a drone strike on Kovpakivska district of Sumy. The blast wave shattered the windows of a minibus that happened to be passing by at the time. The driver quickly moved to a safe distance and evacuated the passengers — none of whom were injured. The explosion also damaged windows in a residential building and several private vehicles.

According to Sumy Regional Military Administration, between the morning of 1 July and the morning of 2 July, russian forces carried out nearly 80 attacks on 29 settlements across 12 territorial communities in Sumy oblast. Sumy and Shostka regions were hit the hardest. The enemy used a wide range of weapons, including: guided aerial bomb strikes (30 hits), grenade drops from UAVs (nearly 20 hits), and MLRS (10 hits), additional strikes by FPV-drones and other UAVs. These attacks resulted in damage to civilian infrastructure in several communities, including Myropillia, Yunakivka, and Yampil.

As a result of russian shelling in Sumy oblast, several sites were damaged across different communities:

  • In Myropillia community: a private residential house, an outbuilding, and a garage were damaged
  • In Yunakivka community: a civilian infrastructure facility was hit
  • In Yampil community: an administrative building sustained damage

Over the past day, 24 people were evacuated from border communities in coordination with local authorities, State Emergency Service units, National Police, and civil society organizations. This effort reflects the ongoing commitment to protecting civilians in high-risk areas amid continued hostilities.

The Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine has identified russian military personnel involved in the shelling of Sumy on 3 June 2025, which resulted in the deaths of six people and injuries to 29 others. Those directly implicated in the strike are servicemen of the 30th Motorized Rifle Regiment, including: the Head of artillery, the commander of a rocket artillery battery, two battery crew commanders

The free evacuation railcar for residents of border communities in Sumy oblast continues to operate weekly on Sumy–Uzhhorod route, as part of state assistance for those forced to flee due to ongoing shelling. The next departure dates are 14, 22, and 28 July. This is part of government assistance for people who are forced to leave their homes due to ongoing shelling.

A group of 26 children from Sumy Center for Social and Psychological Rehabilitation has arrived in the Republic of Azerbaijan for rest and recovery. The children will undergo rehabilitation at a sanatorium in the city of Quba and enjoy time on the Caspian Sea coast in Novkhani. Thanks to the support of Azerbaijani partners, over 300 Ukrainian children have already visited the country under this program.

Chernihiv oblast

Chernihiv Border Detachment reported that on 1 July, russian forces attacked three border communities in Chernihiv oblast: Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka, and Snovsk. Enemy carry out attacks by barrel artillery (3 explosions), by FPV-drone  (5 explosions), and drops from UAVs (5 explosions). A total of six settlements came under fire. In Yeline village, Snovsk community, a non-residential building caught fire as a result of the attack.

“North” Operational Command informed that on 1 June, russian forces carried out four FPV-drone strikes on Halahanivka village in Semenivka community, Chernihiv oblast. The attack resulted in injury to one civilian and damage to a private residential building.

According to Chernihiv Regional Military Administration, one of the military units received 10 generators. The assistance was made possible through a partnership with Help-UA Foundation and German organization “Ukraine. Aid. Breitscheid in the name of Saint Lawrence.”

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Over the past day, 1 July, the occupiers carried out 376 attacks on 14 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast. russian forces launched 4 airstrikes on Huliaipole and Novodanylivka. 252 UAVs of various types (mainly FPV) targeted Malokaterynivka, Bilenke, Novooleksandrivka, Tavriiske, Stepnohirsk, Kamianske, Lobkove, Shcherbaky, Novodanylivka, Mala Tokmachka, and Charivne. Seven MLRS attacks hit Kamianske, Huliaipole, Shcherbaky, and Mala Tokmachka. There were 113 artillery strikes at Kamianske, Lobkove, Huliaipole, Orikhiv, Shcherbaky, Novodanylivka, Mala Tokmachka, Charivne, and Chervona Krynitsa. Sixty-four reports were received about housing, vehicles, and social infrastructure damage. Four people were injured due to enemy attacks in Vasylivka and Polohy regions.

According to the General Staff, as of 16:00, defense forces held back an enemy assault near Kamianske towards Orikhiv. On 1 July, the Defense Forces repelled three attacks by russian troops towards Orikhiv.

Mykolaiv oblast

Yesterday, 1 July, at 08:13, the enemy launched an artillery strike and attacked Kutsurub community four times with FPV drones and once with a drone, presumably of the “Molniya” type. As a result of the shelling, a 75-year-old man was killed, and his 76-year-old wife was injured and hospitalized in the village of Dmytrivka. In addition, private homes, a school, a kindergarten, and a power line were damaged. A grass fire broke out in an open area and was extinguished. Another shelling in the village of Solonchaky caused a residential building to catch fire, which was also extinguished.

Odesa oblast

On the night of 2 July, russia attacked Vylkove territorial community in Izmail region with strike drones. Air defense forces destroyed some drones, but there was still damage. Port and tourist infrastructure objects were hit. No injuries were reported as a result of the attack.

The head of the Chief Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, Kyrylo Budanov, reported that in early June, russian forces attempted to use naval drones against the city of Yuzhne in Odesa oblast, but the attack failed. According to him, the russian army used experimental models of naval drones that did not achieve their intended goal.

As of 6:00 am on 2 July, one enemy carrier of Kalibr cruise missiles was in the Black Sea. There were three enemy ships in the Mediterranean Sea, including one Kalibr cruise missile carrier with a total salvo of up to 4 missiles.

Over the past day, three vessels serving russian interests passed through the Kerch Strait into the Black Sea, and another five ships entered the Sea of Azov.

Kherson oblast

Today, the russian army shelled a hospital in Kherson. As a result of the attack, 9 people were injured. More than a hundred windows were shattered, and the facade and wards were damaged.

Around noon, the russian army shelled Beryslav with artillery. The attack damaged an educational institution and an administrative building.

Around noon, russian forces attacked a truck with a drone on the road in the Beryslav region. Two people were injured. They were diagnosed with blast injuries, concussions, and shrapnel wounds to their limbs.

At approximately 08:00, russian occupiers attacked a man with a drone in Dniprovskyi region of Kherson. The 54-year-old Kherson resident suffered a blast injury, a concussion, and shrapnel wounds to his head, neck, and shoulder. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Around 07:00, the russian army attacked Antonivka with a drone. Three people were injured, two of whom were hospitalized with blast injuries and shrapnel wounds.

A resident of Bilozerka, who was injured during the russian attack on 29 June, sought medical assistance. The 75-year-old woman was diagnosed with a blast injury, concussion, and a traumatic brain injury.

Yesterday, the russian army attacked Beryslav, Bilozerka, Antonivka, Osokorivka, Novovorontsovka, Zolota Balka, Novodmytrivka, Oleksandrivka, Stanislav, Sofiivka, Shyroka Balka, Poniativka, Mykilske, Chervonyi Yar, Shliakhove, Inhuliets, Kizomys, Sadove, Veletenske, Inzhenerne, Molodizhne, Komyshany, Zmiivka, Ivanivka, Kozatske, Novoberyslav, Novokairy, Novoraisk, Odradokamianka, Olyhivka, Tokarivka, Tomaryne, Tiahynka, and the city of Kherson. As a result of the attacks, a multi-story building, 11 private homes, a farm, a business, a bus, and private cars were damaged. Eleven people were injured due to the russian aggression.

Police evacuated a woman with her elderly mother, dog, and parrot from the frontline in Beryslav. They transported the 50-year-old resident and her 73-year-old mother from the coastal city.

Ukrainian Defense Forces continue to strike enemy locations, fire positions, and rear areas. Over the past day, the enemy lost 23 occupiers, 8 artillery systems, 20 units of motor and armored vehicles, 3 reconnaissance drones (“Supercam”, “Zala”, “Orlan”), 2 EW systems, 1 anti-tank missile system, 1 boat, 1 field ammunition storage point, 1 “Starlink” antenna, 8 communication antennas, 1 fuel supply field depot, and 1 surveillance camera. The forces destroyed 24 shelters/bunkers, 9 observation posts, and 1 fire position.

Another teenager was returned to the Ukrainian-controlled territory from the temporarily occupied Kherson oblast. The 16-year-old boy and his mother were living in an occupation for three years. Their rescue was made possible by the joint efforts of the Ukrainian Child Rights Network within the framework of the President’s initiative “Bring Kids Back UA.”

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

The 1st meeting of the Veterans Council, a new advisory body under Lutsk City Council, was held. The Council was created to consider the problematic issues of veterans. It consists of 12 war veterans who defended the territorial integrity of Ukraine in various units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from 2014 to the present day.

Zakarpattia oblast

The oblast became the venue for the VII International Security Forum Ukraine – EU – NATO: Strategic Initiatives in the Face of Global Crisis. The 3-day event was hosted by Yasiniansk community. It brought together the military, representatives of regional and local authorities, international partners, diplomats, experts and public leaders. The forum was dedicated to discussing security challenges in the context of the current aggression, developing strategic solutions to strengthen Ukraine’s defense capabilities and strengthening international partnerships.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Ivano-Frankivsk City Council reported that during the summer, children from families of the deceased and combatants will be able to visit various foreign partner cities. The 1st trip is to the Lithuanian city of Trakai.

Lviv oblast

The National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine will cooperate with the Danylo Halytskyi Lviv National Medical University in the field of scientific research and training of employees. These intentions were enshrined in a memorandum signed between Lviv RMA, the Danylo Halytskyi Lviv National Medical University represented by Rector Orest Chemerys, and the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine represented by President Vasyl Lazoryshynets.

The President of Ukraine awarded the Defender from Sambir region with the III degree For Courage Order (posthumously). Mykola Berezhnytskyi from the first days of the full-scale invasion joined the ranks of the 24th Separate Mechanized Brigade named after King Danylo. In April 2022, while returning from a combat mission near Popasna, Mykola came under artillery fire.

On the facade of Myklashev and Verkhnyaya Bilka schools, communities unveiled memorial plaques to the defenders who were killed defending Ukraine. Plaques were unveiled in honor of Taras Lytvyn, Bohdan Lazar, Serhii Petrykiv, Serhii Adamov, Volodymyr Dyavil, Volodymyr Savko and Serhii Dluhosh.

Rivne oblast

The delegation of Rivne oblast took part in an international conference held in Romania. As part of the event, the regional team held a number of meetings with representatives of clusters from Romania, Spain, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Italy and Moldova. As a result, a Memorandum of Cooperation was signed between the Rivne Furniture Cluster, the Regional Development Agency and 7 European regions.

Ternopil oblast

Ternopil offers free adaptive sports programs for defenders, veterans and their families. War veterans and family members of fallen Heroes can practice for free in the city’s sports clubs.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Khmelnytskyi district municipal institution Veteran PRO received 2 minibuses to provide services to veterans, as well as families of fallen defenders and prisoners of war. These buses are aimed specifically at veterans who need transportation. They are equipped with specialized equipment to ensure inclusiveness.

Chernivtsi oblast

The RMA reported that by decree of Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine, Sergeant Dmytro Strelets was awarded with the III degree Order of Courage (posthumously).

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Sweden will allocate about $176m to Ukraine for humanitarian aid as compensation for the reduction in funding from the US.

The European Union extended sanctions against the russian federation for the annexation of Crimea and Sevastopol until June 2026. The sanctions were first imposed in June 2014. They include a ban on the import of goods from the illegally annexed Crimea or Sevastopol to the European Union, as well as a ban on infrastructure and financial investments and the provision of tourism services in these regions. In addition, the export of certain goods and technologies to Crimean companies or for use on the territory of Crimea in the areas of transport, telecommunications and energy is prohibited. The restrictions also apply to the supply of equipment for the exploration and production of oil, gas and mineral resources.
