War in Ukraine today: latest news, 23 April 2026 (photo)

It has been the 1520  th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 4 pm:   

On 23 April, the aggressor attacked the positions of the Defense Forces 32 times.

Artillery shelling of border areas continues. In Sumy oblast, the settlements of Bachivsk, Iskryskivshchyna, Volfyne, Korenyok, Atynske, Studenok, Kysla Dubyna, Ryzhivka, and Ulanove were affected; Khrinivka in Chernihiv oblast was also targeted.

Towards Northern Sloboda and Kursk: The enemy carried out 40 attacks on settlements and troop positions, one of which involved a multiple launch rocket system (MLRS).

Towards Southern Sloboda: The enemy launched one attack toward the settlement of Zelene.

Towards Kupiansk: The enemy attacked Defense Forces positions four times toward Radkivka, Podoly, and Hlushkivka. One combat engagement is currently ongoing.

Towards Lyman and Kramatorsk: No enemy offensive actions have been recorded since the start of the day.

Towards Sloviansk: The enemy carried out one attack toward Rai-Oleksandrivka.

Towards Kostiantynivka: Invaders launched six attacks near Kostiantynivka, Pleshchiivka, Oleksandro-Shultyne, Sofiivka, and Novopavlivka. Two combat engagements are ongoing.

Towards Pokrovsk: Since the start of the day, occupiers have tried 11 times to dislodge our troops from their positions near Kucheriv Yar, Rodynske, Myrnohrad, Pokrovsk, Udachne, Muravka, and Molodetske, as well as toward Kucheriv Yar and Novopavlivka. Two engagements are still in progress.

Towards Oleksandrivka: The enemy launched two offensives near Kalynivske and Zlahoda. Prosyana sustained an airstrike.

Towards Huliaipole: Defense Forces successfully repelled five enemy attacks near Dobropillia, Zaliznychne, Huliaipilske, and Zelene. Airstrikes were recorded near Novomykolaivka, Vozdvyzhivka, Dolynka, Liubytske, Tsvitkove, Verkhnia Tersa, Huliaipilske, and Charivne.

Towards Orikhiv: The enemy conducted no offensive operations but launched airstrikes against Komyshuvakha and Yurkivka.

Towards Kherson: The enemy conducted two futile assaults toward the Antonivka Bridge and Bilohrudyi Island.

In other directions, there are currently no significant changes in the situation. No enemy attempts to advance have been recorded.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

There were 159 combat engagements. Towards Southern Sloboda, russian troops tried to break through the defense four times in the Lyman area and towards Bochkove and Okhrimivka. Towards Kupiansk, occupiers carried out seven attacks near Petropavlivka and Kivsharivka.

Throughout the day, Kharkiv and 19 settlements in the oblast were under russian strikes. One person was killed and four others were wounded: in Zolochiv—a 25-year-old man; in Slatyne—men aged 28 and 65; in Cherkaski Tyshky—a 66-year-old man was killed and a 68-year-old was wounded. Medics also provided assistance to those affected by previous attacks.

The enemy attacked Kharkiv with UAVs in the Kyivskyi and Nemyshlianskyi districts. In total, 3 KABs, 4 Geran-2 UAVs, 11 Molniia UAVs, 4 FPV drones, and 31 unidentified drones were used.

Civilian infrastructure was damaged in several districts of the oblast. In Bohodukhiv district—farms, residential houses, a gas station, a shop, power grids, and transport; in Izium district—a service station, houses, power grids, and cars; in Kharkiv district—housing and transport; in Chuhuiv district—power grids.

The transit evacuation point in Lozova received 236 people during the day. Since the beginning of its operation, 29,866 people have been registered there.

More than 500 agricultural enterprises in Kharkiv oblast have been destroyed or significantly damaged since the start of the full-scale invasion, and 1,600 pieces of equipment have been destroyed. Regional authorities plan to support 360 small farms with a one-time grant of 50,000 UAH. Due to constant shelling and the threat of equipment destruction by drones, some farmers are reducing or completely abandoning the sowing season. According to the estimation of the Regional Military Administration, russia is purposefully striking the agricultural sector, trying to undermine the region’s economy.

Donetsk oblast

Over the past 24 hours, the Defense Forces repelled more than 60 assaults and attacks in Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts, according to the General Staff of the AFU. Towards Sloviansk, russian troops attempted to advance twice near Yampol, and towards Kramatorsk, twice more near Nykyforivka. The highest level of activity was recorded towards Pokrovsk, where occupiers carried out 36 assaults—stretching from Filiia and Dachne to Rusyn Yar and Nova Poltavka.

russian troops have intensified their efforts towards Kramatorsk, notably employing armored vehicles during assaults near Chasiv Yar. Towards Kostiantynivka, pressure from small infantry groups is increasing, alongside the intensity of FPV drone usage.

Towards Pokrovsk, in the village of Hryshyne, soldiers of the 155th Separate Mechanized Brigade captured two russian servicemen and continue to hold their positions, blocking enemy attempts to advance.

This morning, russia struck the village of Mykhailivka in the Oleksandrivka hromada, hitting a civilian vehicle and killing one person.

On 22 April, police recorded 1,245 russian strikes along the front line and residential sectors. Druzhkivka, Kramatorsk, Bilenke, and Raihorodok came under fire. Eight civilian objects were damaged, including five residential houses. In Kramatorsk, three drone attacks damaged a private house and two cars; in Druzhkivka, an FPV drone damaged a private residence; in Raihorodok and Bilenke, several houses were damaged.

Nine people—4 men and 5 women aged 57 to 76—were evacuated from the frontline town of Mykolaivka, according to the police of Donetsk oblast.

Luhansk oblast

On the previous day, russians attacked seven times towards Lyman and Sloviansk —combat continued near four settlements. The occupiers used mortars six times, as well as automatic grenade launchers and tube artillery, and deployed four drones.

In the so-called “lpr,” massive cases of fraud are being recorded related to a mandatory russian mobile application that public sector employees, and later other residents, were forced to install. People are complaining about the disappearance of funds from bank accounts, loss of access to accounts, and profile hacking. The number of victims is increasing.

In Dovzhansk and other cities in the occupied part of Luhansk oblast, disruptions in gas supply have begun. Gas disappeared from local homes without warning or explanation regarding restoration timelines. This is happening against a backdrop of regular water and electricity outages.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

The Regional Military Administration reported that in Buzova village, Bucha region, reconstruction of a multi-apartment residential building on Tsentralna Street, damaged in 2022 as a result of the armed aggression of the russian federation, is ongoing. Before the full-scale invasion, 115 people lived in the building.

Mykola Kalashnyk, Head of the Regional Military Administration, reported following a meeting of the Regional Defence Council that last year in Kyiv oblast, 35 educational facilities were equipped with solar panels, serving more than 12,500 students and over 7,000 children. In 2026, it is additionally planned to install one such facility in each community.

Kyiv oblast is actively preparing for the next heating season. The region has received 36 units of equipment from donors for the installation of modular boiler houses. Some of them have already been installed and put into operation. Projects to install solar power stations at municipal facilities are also underway.

 Kyiv City State Administration informed that currently, 802 educational institutions in Kyiv — 85% of the total — are equipped with generators. Recently, the city’s humanitarian headquarters delivered 341 generators with capacities ranging from 3 to 275 kW to city districts.

According to the State Emergency Service, in Kalyta, the family of fallen rescuer Mykhailo Protsenko was awarded the state decoration of the President of Ukraine “For the Defence of Ukraine”. He was killed while responding to the aftermath of an enemy strike in Yahotyn, carrying out his duty to the very end.

Prince Harry, son of Charles III, arrived in Kyiv on an unannounced visit. He told ITV News that he wanted “to remind people at home and around the world what Ukraine is facing and to support the people and partners who are doing extraordinary work every day, every minute, in incredibly difficult conditions.” Prince Harry also took part in Kyiv Security Forum.

Zhytomyr oblast

The State Emergency Service reported that on the morning of 23 April, russian forces attacked Zhytomyr oblast by drones. As a result of the strike, a woman was killed, while another person suffered an acute stress reaction. The enemy targeted civilian transport infrastructure in the oblast. The shelling caused a fire in dry grass, which was promptly extinguished by rescuers. Emergency responders, repair crews, and law enforcement officers are working at the scene.

The Ministry for Communities and Territories Development informed that at Korosten railway station, an enemy drone struck a locomotive. Railway workers were in shelter at the time. A civilian woman who was passing nearby was killed.

According to the City Council, in Korosten, inspections of houses destroyed and damaged by the russian strike on 3 April 2026 have been completed. As of 22 April, 127 applications for financial assistance from the local budget have been approved. A total of 134 applications were submitted by individuals for the inspection of damaged or destroyed residential buildings, along with 8 applications from legal entities. As of today, all destroyed or damaged houses in the Brovar neighbourhood have been inspected.

Sumy oblast

Over the past week, units of the Defence Forces destroyed and suppressed around 600 enemy UAVs using electronic warfare systems in Sumy oblast. Among them were 546 strike UAVs and 23 reconnaissance drones. During this period, more than 850 enemy UAVs were detected in the skies over the oblast. According to the Territorial Defence zone headquarters, nearly 70% of them were destroyed or suppressed.

On the morning of 23 April, russian forces attacked civilian infrastructure in Trostianets community, Okhtyrka region, by a UAV. According to the Regional Prosecutor’s Office, a shop, a private household, and a vehicle were damaged. A 56-year-old shop assistant was also injured and received medical assistance at the scene.

The Regional Military Administration reported that on 22 April, another civilian resident of the border area was killed as a result of a russian drone strike. The man was found on 23 April on a field road between villages in Hlukhiv community. His moped with belongings was found nearby. The 67-year-old local resident had returned home to collect his belongings and evacuate from the border area but was deliberately targeted by a russian UAV on the way.

A resident of Velyka Pysarivka community was also killed on 22 April by a russian drone strike. The UAV hit near a vehicle, and the man sustained severe injuries that proved fatal.

Over the past day, from the morning of 22 April to the morning of 23 April, russian forces carried out around 100 attacks on 40 settlements across 19 territorial communities of the oblast. The highest number of attacks was recorded in Sumy and Shostka regions. The enemy used mortars, artillery, MLRS, FPV drones, UAVs, and guided aerial bombs. Air raid alerts in the oblast lasted for 21 hours and 9 minutes over the day.

Civilian infrastructure facilities were damaged and destroyed:

  • in Shostka community, civilian infrastructure facilities were damaged;
  • in Seredyna-Buda community, a multi-apartment residential building was damaged;
  • in Hlukhiv community, a private residential house was destroyed, while private houses, outbuildings, and civilian infrastructure facilities were damaged;
  • in Svesa community, civilian infrastructure facilities and a non-residential building were damaged;
  • in Vorozhba community, a civilian infrastructure facility was damaged;
  • in Bilopillia community, a multi-apartment residential building was damaged;
  • in Velyka Pysarivka community, a private household was destroyed, while another household and vehicles were damaged;
  • in Putyvl community, a civilian passenger vehicle was damaged;
  • in Nova Slobidka community, a medical facility and a civilian infrastructure facility were damaged;
  • in Krasnopillia community, a civilian infrastructure facility was damaged;
  • in Sumy community, non-residential premises were damaged;
  • in Yampil community, as a result of shelling on the night of 22 April, private houses, outbuildings, civilian infrastructure facilities, and vehicles were destroyed and damaged.

Over the past day, 20 people were evacuated from border areas by local authorities in cooperation with units of the State Emergency Service, the National Police, and volunteer organisations.

In Sumy, response efforts continue following the russian attack on a residential area of the city during the night of 21 April. According to the City Council, a total of 36 buildings were damaged, including 14 multi-apartment and 15 private residential houses, as well as educational, medical, and sports facilities. Damage was recorded to 418 balcony frames, 1,189 windows in apartments, 226 windows in common areas, and eight roofs. One private residential house was destroyed.

Chernihiv oblast

The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine reported that over the past day, 22 April, border guards shot down three russian UAVs in the skies over Chernihiv oblast. Fighters downed two Herbera-type UAVs and one Shahed.

Oleksandr Seliverstov, Head of Novhorod-Siverskyi Regional Military Administration, said that as a result of a russian attack on Novhorod-Siverskyi during the night of 23 April, a 77-year-old woman was injured. She was taken to a medical facility. Three enemy UAV strikes were recorded in the private sector of the town. A residential house was destroyed, and nearby buildings were also damaged.

Serhii Kramarenko, Head of Chernihiv Regional Military Administration, informed that on the evening of 22 April, russian forces attacked a critical infrastructure facility in Horodnia by UAVs. A fire broke out as a result of the strike.

According to Viacheslav Chaus, Head of the Regional Military Administration, over the course of 22 April, the enemy attacked border settlements. In Semenivka, an 83-year-old local woman was injured after a Molniya UAV struck a residential area. In a village of Semenivka community, FPV drones hit an agricultural enterprise, damaging a combine harvester and farm buildings.

The Chernihiv Border Guard Detachment reported that over the course of 22 April, russian forces attacked four border communities of Chernihiv oblast: Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka, Horodnia, and Snovsk. The enemy carried out shelling using mortars (3 explosions) and tube artillery (13 explosions), conducted a Molniya-type UAV strike (1 explosion), carried out FPV drone strikes (16 explosions), and dropped explosive devices from UAVs (4 explosions). Eleven settlements came under enemy fire.

The Regional Military Administration announced that Chernihiv oblast is joining an initiative with the Ukrainian Association of Football to implement a new pilot project aimed at restoring the mental and physical health of thousands of children from frontline regions. The project is planned to be launched this year and will be based in Carpathian regions, providing tourism and recreational components.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovsk RMA, reported that as a result of a UAV attack on Dnipro, 2 people were killed. 9 people were injured, including 2 children (girls aged 9 and 14). Emergency responders rescued 6 people, including 2 children. Fires broke out. 3 floors of a multi-storey building were destroyed. Cars, a shop and a non-operational building were damaged. In Marhanets, a 64-year-old woman was injured. The occupiers targeted the regional centre, Marhanets, Myrove, Pokrovske rural and Chervonohryhorivka communities by FPV drones. A private house, a garage and infrastructure were damaged. In Kryvyi Rih, a UAV attack caused damage on the territory of an enterprise.

A 41-year-old woman was injured in a UAV attack in Kryvyi Rih.

Fires broke out. 5 summer houses, an administrative building and infrastructure were damaged. 

Due to a daytime UAV attack in Dnipro, infrastructure was damaged. The enemy attacked Dubovykivka community by UAVs.

Vinnytsia oblast

In Vinnytsia oblast, explosive ordnance disposal specialists neutralised a missile warhead, a submunition and 2 russian Shahed-type UAVs at 4 locations.

Poltava oblast

A serviceman from Poltava oblast was killed at the front. He was Soldier Petro Kybkalo from Drabynivka territorial community. The soldier was killed as a result of a russian mortar attack in Zaporizhzhia oblast. He had been considered missing for more than 2 years.

Cherkasy oblast

In Cherkasy oblast, people paid tribute to Vladyslav Zhydkov, a graduate of Smila School No.11, who was killed during a shooting in Kyiv on 18 April.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

According the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, on 22 April, Ukrainian Defence Forces repelled 17 russian attacks in Huliaipole region. In particular, combat clashes took place in the areas of Dobropillia, Hirske, Zaliznychne, Zelene, Staroukrainka, Tsvitkove and in the direction of Novoandriivka.

Ivan Fedorov, Head of Zaporizhzhia RMA, reported that a 77-year-old woman was killed as a result of a russian airstrike on Komyshuvakha in Zaporizhzhia oblast.

On 22 April,  a 72-year-old woman was injured as a result of an airstrike on Novomykolaivka in Zaporizhzhia oblast. The russian forces carried out 820 strikes on 50 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast.

Mykolaiv oblast

Based on the information provided by Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, on 22 April, the russian military attacked Ochakiv and Kutsurub communities 4 times by FPV drones. There were no injuries reported.

Odesa oblast

Referring to the Air Force, a UAV was detected in the airspace moving toward Odesa oblast from the Black Sea.

The Naval Forces of Ukraine reported that the Navy destroyed a russian unmanned surface vessel that was attempting to approach one of the ports of Odesa oblast.

Kherson oblast

According to Kherson RMA, at approximately 10:30am, russian occupiers attacked Chereshenky village in Bilozirka community by a UAV. An 84-year-old woman who was in the yard of her house came under the strike. She sustained a concussion, blast injuries and a closed head injury.

At approximately 7am, russian occupiers attacked a municipal enterprise garbage truck by a UAV in Tekstylne settlement. As a result of the enemy strike, a 49-year-old driver sustained shrapnel wounds to the neck, a concussion, blast injuries and a closed head injury.

Yesterday at around 9pm in Tsentralnyi district, a 63-year-old man came under attack, and today at 1:40am a 71-year-old woman in Korabelnyi district. They were diagnosed with blast injuries, concussions and acute stress reactions. Also, the woman sustained shrapnel wounds to the torso.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

In Kivertsy, the Station of Goodness volunteer initiative organized another transfer of aid for units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in Kherson oblast.

Zakarpattia oblast

A 5-day training course for 25 social professionals has started in the oblast as part of the Resilience project. With the support of French partners, participants are learning modern international approaches to working with children and families who need special support.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Ivano-Frankivsk community sent200 drones, 3 Mavic, 2 Matrice to the 128th brigade Dyke Pole, a battalion of unmanned systems in Zaporizhzhia oblast.

Lviv oblast

The RMA held a meeting with the Nova Ukraine delegation led by Erin McKee, Director General. Nova Ukraine systematically provides humanitarian assistance to Ukraine and strengthens its presence in the information space of the United States and the world. Since 2014, it has sent almost $143m in aid to the country, combining contributions from over $149,000.

260 high school students from Sambir region watched the documentary film Battle for Kyiv Oblast: Chernobyl, Hostomel, Bucha. The History of the 80th Separate Airborne Assault Brigade for free. The film recreates the events of the first week of the full-scale invasion of the russian federation, namely the offensive on Kyiv oblast in 2022. The film combines the personal stories of paratroopers of the 80th Separate Airborne Assault Galician Brigade with video footage shot by fighters themselves.

Rivne oblast

The international Mineral Forum Rivne has launched in Rivne. It is a platform for professional discussion of practical solutions in the field of mineral enrichment, implementation of innovative technologies, recycling and reuse of technogenic waste. Scientists, businessmen, and experts from Ukraine and abroad joined the exchange of experience.

Ternopil oblast

Defenders from the Artan special unit of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine received 3 Renault Duster SUVs from Ternopil community. Cars were sent in response to a request from the military.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

610 active military personnel from Khmelnytskyi community will receive financial assistance at their own expense. The total amount of assistance is over UAH 6m.

Chernivtsi oblast

Chernivtsi will host a pre-premiere screening of the film Weary about veterans trying to overcome the consequences of war. As the creators of the film note, Weary is a psychological drama about veterans trying to overcome the consequences of war and find support in personal relationships. The film explores trauma, recovery, and the difficult process of returning to life after what has been experienced.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Spain is providing Ukraine with 100 VAMTAC armored vehicles and a shipment of artillery shells. The aid will also include 155mm shells for artillery units.

Antonio Costa, President of the European Council, announced that a European support package for Ukraine worth EUR 90bn for 2 years has been unlocked. The EU has also finally approved the 20th package of sanctions against russia.
