What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

According to Mykola Kalashnyk, head of the Regional Military Administration, construction has begun in Hostomel on new housing for residents of the military town whose homes were destroyed during the hostilities in Kyiv oblast. To replace the 272 destroyed flats, 360 new ones will be built in seven-storey blocks, to be constructed in six phases. Preparatory work is already underway at the construction site.

In Irpin, major repairs are underway on a block of flats at 69 Sadova Street, which suffered serious damage as a result of russian armed aggression. The project is aimed not only at restoring what was destroyed, but also at a high-quality refurbishment of the building, with an emphasis on structural safety and improved energy efficiency.

In the run-up to the Easter holidays, psychologists from the Kyiv State Emergency Service held a session for injured rescue workers as part of the nationwide mental health programme ‘How are you?’. Participants took part in a creative workshop and created their own Easter eggs on wood, imbuing them with personal meanings, hope and inner strength.

The Kyiv City State Administration reported that the Kyiv City Territorial Centre for Social Services has been equipped with three new specialised minibuses. These were provided to Kyiv with financial support from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development in cooperation with partner cities – Leipzig, Berlin and the Charlottenburg district administration..

Zhytomyr oblast

On 7 April, at Zhytomyr City Council, Staff Sergeant Oleksandr Plotitsyn of the 518th Special Forces Battalion ‘Dyke Pole’ was awarded the Order ‘For Courage’ (3rd class) and the ‘For Fortitude’ medal. The soldier had been held captive for 32 months. He had actually received the awards back in 2022. For three years, they were kept at the Social Services Centre, awaiting Oleksandr’s return. The soldier is currently undergoing treatment.

At St Michael’s Cathedral in Zhytomyr, during the Easter celebrations, services and the blessing of Easter baskets will take place in accordance with wartime security requirements, said the cathedral’s rector, Bohdan Boiko. Worshippers are asked not to gather in large groups and to respond to air raid sirens.

Sumy oblast

As a result of a night enemy attack on Romny community, one person was killed and three others were injured. The residential sector and infrastructure sustained damage. Fires also broke out in a residential building and a non-residential premises.

The State Emergency Service reported that rescue teams were operating simultaneously at several locations. Due to the threat of repeated attacks, operations were periodically suspended. Despite the challenging security situation, all fires were extinguished.

As a result of russian shelling across the oblast over the past day, 7 April, one person was killed and three others were injured. According to the Regional Military Administration, a 42-year-old man was killed in Romny community as a result of enemy UAV strikes, while women aged 47, 61, and 66 were injured.

Over the past day, from the morning of 7 April to the morning of 8 April, russian forces carried out more than 70 attacks on 31 settlements across 20 territorial communities of the oblast. The highest number of attacks was recorded in Sumy and Shostka regions. The enemy used mortars, artillery, FPV drones, UAVs, and guided aerial bombs. Air raid alerts in the oblast lasted for 23 hours and 31 minutes over the day.

Civilian infrastructure facilities were damaged and destroyed:

  • in Esman community, private residential houses were destroyed;
  • in Shalyhyne community, a private residential house and outbuildings were destroyed, and a civilian infrastructure facility was damaged;
  • in Hlukhiv community, a private residential house was damaged;
  • in Shostka community, a private residential house, a multi-apartment building, a non-residential building, and civilian infrastructure facilities were damaged;
  • in Sumy community, a private household and an outbuilding were damaged;
  • in Romny community, a private household and a non-residential premises were damaged;
  • in Lebedyn community, a civilian infrastructure facility was damaged.

Over the past day, 13 people were evacuated from border communities by local authorities in cooperation with units of the State Emergency Service, the National Police, and public organisations.

The City Council informed that following the strike on 4 April on a building on Kharkivska Street in Sumy, residents of three apartments will be resettled, and access to part of the non-residential premises will be restricted. A preliminary assessment identified significant structural damage to the 13th, 14th, and technical floors. The building is in an emergency condition, with a risk of further collapse.

In Sumy, the first residents have moved into a modular settlement for internally displaced persons — nine families from border communities of Sumy oblast. Settlement is ongoing in two houses, while the remaining units are still under construction. Applications continue to be accepted by the Department of Social Protection of the City Council. The project was supported by Swedish Red Cross and Sumy Regional Organisation of Ukrainian Red Cross Society.

Chernihiv oblast

“Northern Forest Office” branch reported that on the daytime of 7 April, russian forces attacked a forestry tractor by a drone in Semenivka forestry of the State Enterprise “Lisy Ukrainy”. The driver spotted the UAV and managed to leave the vehicle. The driver was travelling to a site for soil preparation at the time of the attack. He was not injured.

On the evening of 7 April, russian forces carried out UAV attacks on settlements in Koriukivka and Chernihiv regions. The National Police informed that passenger and lorry vehicles were damaged and destroyed as a result of the attack. According to Koriukivka Regional Military Administration, around ten vehicles were damaged.

In one of the villages of Horodnia community, two passenger vehicles belonging to local residents were damaged following an FPV drone strike.

According to the Regional Military Administration, in Mena community, strike UAVs attacked a private parking area. Lorries were destroyed and damaged due to explosions and fire. Rescue teams extinguished the fire.

In Semenivka, the enemy again struck the house of culture. The roof was damaged as a result of an FPV drone strike.

Viacheslav Chaus, Head of the Regional Military Administration, said that victims of the strike on Pryluky on 7 April, when three Heran-type UAVs attacked administrative buildings in the city centre, continue to receive treatment in medical facilities. The condition of one of the injured remains stable but serious.

Chernihiv Border Guard Detachment reported that over the course of 7 April, russian forces attacked three border communities of Chernihiv oblast: Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka, and Horodnia. The enemy carried out shelling using mortars (10 explosions) and tube artillery (3 explosions), conducted a UAV strike of Herbera type (1 explosion), and FPV drone strikes (8 explosions). Seven settlements came under enemy fire.

In Nizhyn region, explosive ordnance specialists of the National Police neutralised the warhead of a russian strike UAV that had been shot down by the Defence Forces. The drone was discovered in an open area near one of the settlements.

The National Police informed that in one of the villages of Ponornytsia community on 6 April, a 53-year-old local resident attempted to dismantle the remains of a UAV. The device detonated, and the man sustained shrapnel injuries. He was hospitalised. The man told officers he had attempted to dismantle the UAV in his yard.

According to preliminary information, the building of Pryluky City Council is unfit for use following the russian drone attack on the morning of 7 April. Oleksandr Syvenko, Deputy Mayor of Pryluky announced that law enforcement agencies are currently inspecting the building to determine its final condition. The extent of the damage is being assessed. The city archive, stored in the basement, was not damaged.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

During the night, 13 enemy UAVs were shot down. In the morning, the enemy UAVs towards Kryvyi Rih region.

Nikopol region. The enemy attacked the area using drones and artillery, targeting Nikopol, Pokrovske rural, Marhanets, and Chervonohryhorivka communities. Three private houses, a garage, a petrol station, and four vehicles were damaged.

Pavlohrad region. In Ternivka, an enterprise was damaged.

Kryvyi Rih region. Kryvyi Rih and Zelendolsk community came under attack. Infrastructure was damaged.

Nikopol region. In Nikopol, two 23-year-old men were injured. The occupiers attacked the region using drones and artillery, targeting the regional centre, Myrove, Marhanets, Pokrovske rural, and Chervonohryhorivka communities. A fire broke out. Damage was recorded on the territory of a hospital, as well as to two private houses, a garage, and five vehicles.

Synelnykove region. As a result of a UAV attack in Vasylkivka community, a lyceum and a vehicle were damaged. Two employees of the lyceum, men aged 64 and 56, were injured.

Kirovohrad oblast

In Onufriivka community, residents paid tribute to defender Oleksandr Butko. On 9 February 2026, his family was informed that he had gone missing while carrying out a combat mission in Zaporizhzhia oblast, in the vicinity of Dobropillia town. On 3 April, confirmation of his death was received.

In Haivoron community, serviceman Borys Aksentiichuk was welcomed home. He had been held in russian captivity and returned to his home village of Viknyna after rehabilitation. Having joined the defence of the country, he served in the 151st Separate Mechanised Brigade. He was captured in Donetsk oblast and was released during a prisoner exchange on 6 March 2026.

Poltava oblast

Five people injured as a result of russian shelling continue to receive treatment in hospitals in Poltava, including one child. Damage was also recorded to 17 households.

Two servicemen from Khorol community have been confirmed killed: Ihor Zaiets and Yaroslav Terentiev.

Ihor Zaiets held the rank of Private and served as a grenadier in the 116th Separate Territorial Defence Brigade. He had been considered missing for one and a half years. He was killed in 2024 in Kursk oblast.

Yaroslav Terentiev held the rank of infantry Private and served as a rifleman and assistant grenadier in a mechanised unit of the 143rd Separate Mechanised Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He was killed on 1 April 2026 at a combat position in Kramatorsk region, Donetsk oblast.

Cherkasy oblast

In Cherkasy oblast, residents paid tribute to serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Yurii Kovbasiuk. He was killed on 1 April 2026 while performing military service in Donetsk oblast.

In Novodmytrivka community, residents welcomed home defender Viktor Savytskyi, who was released from russian captivity. He had been captured in September 2024 and was returned during a prisoner exchange on 6 March 2026.

Korsun-Shevchenkivskyi community also welcomed home defender Oleksandr Postyk, who had been held in captivity since July 2024 and was released during an exchange in March 2026. After his return, he underwent rehabilitation.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Today, 8 April, russian forces shelled Bilenke in Zaporizhzhia oblast with FPV drones. According to the head of the regional administration, Ivan Fedorov, a 58-year-old man was injured while driving a car. The car was destroyed, and a rescue vehicle was also damaged.

As reported by Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, yesterday, 7 April, the occupiers carried out 804 strikes on 45 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast. russian forces launched 19 airstrikes on Zaporizhzhia, Novomykolaivka, Balabyne, Bilenke, Kanivske, Tavriiske, Lisne, Zelena Dibrova, Nove Pole, Charivne, Hirke, Verkhnia Tersa, Kopani, Shyroke, Huliaipilske, Vozdvyzhivka, and Zelene. 573 UAVs of various types (mostly FPV) attacked Vilniansk, Kushuhum, Komyshuvakha, Chervonodniprovka, Lysohirka, Nyzhnia Khortytsia, Novooleksandrivka, Tavriiske, Novoiakivlivka, Yurkivka, Stepnohirsk, Prymorske, Stepove, Pavlivka, Lukianivske, Orikhiv, Huliaipole, Zaliznychne, Shcherbaky, Novoandriivka, Novodanylivka, Mala Tokmachka, Charivne, Huliaipilske, Staroukrainka, Sviatopetrivka, Tsvitkove, Varvarivka, Olenokostiantynivka, Pryluky, and Dobropillia. Six MLRS strikes targeted Novoandriivka, Mala Tokmachka, Huliaipilske, Verkhnia Tersa, and Vozdvyzhivka. 206 artillery strikes hit Chervonodniprovka, Bilenke, Novoyakivlivka, Stepnohirsk, Prymorske, Stepove, Pavlivka, Lukianivske, Orikhiv, Huliaipole, Zaliznychne, Shcherbaky, Novoandriivka, Novodanylivka, Mala Tokmachka, Charivne, Huliaipilske, Staroukrainka, Sviatopetrivka, Varvarivka, Olenokostiantynivka, and Dobropillia. There were 91 reports of damage to infrastructure, residential buildings, and vehicles. Two people were killed, and nine others were injured as a result of enemy strikes on Zaporizhzhia and Zaporizhzhia region.

According to the General Staff, as of 16:00 on 8 April, the Defence Forces repelled nine enemy attacks toward the settlements of Pryluky, Dobropillia, Tsvitkove, Zaliznychne, Huliaipilske, and Varvarivka. One engagement is ongoing. Over the past day, 7 April, the Defence Forces repelled 26 russian attacks towards Huliaipole and one more towards Orikhiv.

The Commander of the Unmanned Systems Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Robert (“Madiar”) Brovdi, reported that in the temporarily occupied territory of Zaporizhzhia oblast, the Unmanned Systems Forces destroyed a russian surface-to-air missile system and a radar station. In particular, they detected and struck a Buk-M3 air defence system and a rare Zoopark-1M radar system.

The Yellow Ribbon resistance movement reported that in the temporarily occupied city of Melitopol, the occupation administration introduced a russian campaign called the “digital dictation,” presented as a test of digital literacy. At the same time, participants are required to provide personal data while taking the test. According to their information, participation is mandatory for school students, university students, teachers, and public sector employees—institutions compile lists and require proof of completion for reporting purposes.

Mykolaiv oblast

According to Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, yesterday, 7 April, the enemy carried out two FPV drone attacks on Ochakiv and Kutsurub communities. As a result of one of the strikes, a private house was damaged in the village of Dmytrivka.

Over the past day, three Shahed 131/136-type strike UAVs and various types of decoy drones were shot down or suppressed in Mykolaiv oblast.

Odesa oblast

Odesa Regional Military Administration reported that on the evening of 8 April, the enemy attacked energy infrastructure in Odesa oblast. As a result of a drone strike, an energy facility was damaged. According to preliminary information, there were no casualties.

During the night, russian forces attacked the southern part of Odesa oblast with strike drones. Civilian and port infrastructure were affected. As a result of the attack, a warehouse building and a utility structure were partially destroyed. The fires were extinguished.

Izmail Regional Military Administration reported that on the morning of 8 April, russia carried out another attack on Izmail region in Odesa oblast. Port infrastructure was targeted.

Kherson oblast

As reported by Kherson Regional Military Administration, on 8 April at around 11:30, russian forces attacked Komyshany with a drone. A 63-year-old woman sustained a blast injury and shrapnel wounds to her face, arms, and legs.

At around 08:30, a resident stepped on a russian mine in Korabelnyi district of Kherson. As a result of the explosion, the 58-year-old man suffered a blast injury and a traumatic amputation of his foot.

According to the head of Kherson Regional Military Administration, Oleksandr Prokudin, an elderly man attacked by a russian drone on 3 April in the Korabelnyi district of Kherson died in hospital. Doctors fought for several days to save the life of the 84-year-old resident, but his injuries proved fatal.

Kherson Regional Military Administration also reported that two children affected by previous russian attacks required medical assistance. A 16-year-old girl, who was injured during a russian UAV attack in Korabelnyi district on 6 April, sustained a blast injury and an acute stress reaction. A 13-year-old girl suffered a blast injury and an acute stress reaction as a result of shelling in Korabelnyi district on 7 April.

The Police of Kherson oblast reported that yesterday, four people were killed and 21 were injured as a result of russian shelling in the region, including a child and five medical workers. Kherson and numerous settlements—including Antonivka, Kizomys, Stepanivka, Sofiivka, Inhulivka, Oleksandrivka, Shyroka Balka, Dniprovske, Zelenivka, Bilozerka, Stanislav, Romashkove, Yantarne, Veletynske, Rozlyv, Zorivka, Pravdyne, Novodmytrivka, Chornobaivka, Tomyna Balka, Beryslav, Havrylivka, Mykhailivka, Novooleksandrivka, Ukrainka, Novoraisk, Tokareve, Tiahynka, Kozatske, and Vesele—came under attack. 65 objects were damaged, including 17 apartment buildings, 28 private houses, a critical infrastructure facility, three medical institutions, an enterprise, a sanatorium, a school, two kindergartens, an emergency ambulance, five vehicles, a pharmacy, a bus depot, a hangar, and a garage.

According to the General Staff, as of 16:00 on 8 April, the enemy carried out three unsuccessful assault actions toward the Antonivskyi Bridge.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

The RMA held a meeting with heads and elders of the districts of Poromivska, Litovezka, Novovolynska, Ivanychivska and Pavlivska communities of Volodymyr region. They discussed social protection, support for children, internally displaced persons, veteran policy and roads.

Zakarpattia oblast

Veterans of the oblast have elected their representative at the all-Ukrainian level. According to results of a closed vote, the candidacy of Taras Deiak, leader of the Veteran Hub for Psychosocial and Legal Support for Participants in Combat Actions NGO, was supported by a majority of votes by representatives of veteran public associations who registered for the regional meeting.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Ivano-Frankivsk City Council reported that another 199 photos of defenders who are in captivity or are missing have been placed on the Alley of Faith and Hope in the city.

Lviv oblast

During a working visit to one of the thermal power plants, the Minister of Energy of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal awarded 36 DTEK Energy employees. Among them were 7 representatives of DTEK Dobrotvirska TPP and Halremenerho.

Petro Zhyrukha, serviceman from Sokal, received the Cross of Missile Troops and Artillery award by the Minister of Defense of Ukraine. The award was presented at a medical facility where the defender is undergoing treatment after being wounded.

Rivne oblast

A meeting with businesses was held in Rivne, organized by the Federation of Employers of Rivne oblast. They discussed attracting additional funds through grants and programs; a strategy for the development of the woodworking and furniture industry; effective interaction with education; programs and support mechanisms of the Export Credit Agency.

Ternopil oblast

On the eve of Easter, volunteers from the Airborne Cossack Swarm public organization prepared over 5,000 holiday packages that will be sent to the 3rd Army Corps of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Each package contains Easter eggs, sweets, and drawings that convey warm words of support from the children of the oblast.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Anatolii Yashchuk, Advisor to the General Director of Prestige-Avto LLC, was awarded with the Golden Heart award of the President of Ukraine. This is recognition of his systematic work in the volunteer movement.

Chernivtsi oblast

An excavator was handed over to the military personnel defending Ukraine in Donetsk oblast. This equipment was provided by the Chernivtsiteplokomunenerho enterprise.
