War in Ukraine today: latest news, 17 August 2025 (photo)

It has been the 1271st day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

On 17 August, there were 65 combat clashes.

Communities of border settlements have suffered from enemy artillery fire, in particular, Khrinivka, Kliusy, Zarechye in Chernihiv oblast; Seredyna-Buda, Prohres, Bachivsk, Bobylivka in Sumy oblast. Krasnyi Khutyr and Romashkove were bombed by airstrikes.

Towards Northern Sloboda and Kursk, there were three combat clashes with enemy troops. In addition, the enemy carried out 5 airstrikes, dropping 12 guided bombs, and also carried out 126 shelling of the positions of our troops and settlements, seven of which were from multiple launch rocket systems. Ukrainian units are conducting active actions to disrupt the plans of the occupier, and have had some success in some locations.

Towards Southern Sloboda, the Defense Forces repelled an enemy attack near the settlement of Vovchansk.

Towards Kupiansk, russian occupiers tried to break through Ukrainian defenses near the settlements of Zapadne, Stepova Novoselivka and Kupiansk. Four out of seven attacks were repelled by Ukrainian soldiers, and fighting continues.

Towards Lyman, the invading army launched five attacks on the positions of Ukrainian units near the settlements of Hrekivka and Ridkodub, all attacks were stopped.

Towards Siversk, the occupiers unsuccessfully tried to advance in the vicinity of Hryhorivka and Fedorivka.

Towards Kramatorsk, the enemy twice tried to break through the defenses of Ukrainian defenders in the direction of the settlement of Oleksandro-Shultyne.

Towards Toretsk, the enemy carried out four assault actions in the vicinity of Shcherbinivka and towards Pleshchiivka. Two clashes are still ongoing.

Towards Pokrovsk, russian invaders made 27 attempts to push Ukrainian defenders from the occupied positions in the vicinity of the settlements of Poltavka, Nove Shakhove, Zapovedne, Novoekonomichne, Novoukrainka, Lysivka, Zvirove, Dachne and in the vicinity of Volodymyrivka, Rodynske, Pokrovsk, Novopavlivka, and Molodetske. The defense forces are holding back the onslaught and repelling 24 enemy attacks, and fighting is still ongoing in three locations.

Towards Novopavlivka, the enemy unsuccessfully tried to break through the defenses of Ukrainian defenders in the vicinity of the settlements of Tolstoi and Maliivka. The defense forces repelled three enemy assaults.

Towards Huliaipolr direction, the settlement of Novodanylivka was subjected to an air strike.

Towards Kherson, the enemy tried in vain to approach Ukrainian defenders four times, and also carried out an airstrike in the vicinity of the settlement of Olhivka.

In the remaining directions, there were no significant changes.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy says that negotiations with russia should be held in accordance with the current front line. He also stressed that a ceasefire is necessary before considering the conditions for ending the war.

According to the Air ForceOn the night of August 17, russia attacked the territory of Ukraine with an Iskander-M ballistic missile and 60 UAVs. It was possible to shoot down 40 UAVs.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

Frontline
As of 16:00, in the Southern-Slobozhanskyi direction, the Defense Forces repelled a Russian attack near Vovchansk, the General Staff reported.

In the Kupiansk direction, Russian troops attempted to break through in the areas of Zapadne, Stepova Novoselivka, and toward Kupiansk. Ukrainian forces repelled four out of seven attacks; fighting is ongoing.

Over the past day, 148 combat engagements were recorded, according to the Regional Military Administration.

In the Southern-Slobozhanskyi direction, the enemy launched seven assaults on positions of our units near Vovchansk, Krasne Pershe, Kamianka, and Ambarne.

In the Kupiansk direction, 17 enemy attacks took place during the day. The Defense Forces repelled assaults in the areas of Kindrashivka, Zapadne, Holubivka, and Stepova Novoselivka.

Shelling
During the day, the village of Lisne in the Malodanilivka community came under attack. As a result of a strike with two guided aerial bombs (KABs), three people were injured: a 49-year-old man and two women aged 48 and 51. All suffered acute stress reactions but declined hospitalization.

Around 08:00, the Russian army shelled Kupiansk with artillery, the regional prosecutor’s office reported. A 43-year-old man was injured and hospitalized, according to the head of the District Military Administration, Andrii Kanashevych. He added that a private house was damaged.

Over the past day, four settlements in Kharkiv region came under enemy strikes. As a result of the shelling, five people were injured.

In the village of Vilshany, Solonytsivka community, a 19-year-old, a 46-year-old, and a 76-year-old woman, as well as a 49-year-old man, were injured. In the village of Nova Kozacha, Derhachi community, a 70-year-old man was wounded.

The enemy actively used various types of weapons against Kharkiv region:
▪️ 1 missile (type to be determined);
▪️ 1 guided aerial bomb (KAB);
▪️ 1 Lancet-type UAV;
▪️ 1 Molniya-type UAV.

Civilian infrastructure was damaged or destroyed:
▪️ in Kharkiv district — 2 private houses (Nova Kozacha), a private house, garage, and utility building (Vilshany);
▪️ in Kupiansk district — an apartment building (Prykolotne).

Since the start of the full-scale invasion, about 1,400 residential buildings damaged by Russian shelling have been restored in Kharkiv, Mayor Ihor Terekhov reported. According to him, in 2025, 200 buildings were planned to be rebuilt — as of mid-August, work has already been completed on more than 140 of them.

Donetsk oblast

Frontline
In the direction of Dobropillia and Ivanivka, Russian forces expanded their control zone, intensifying their advance near Novyi Shakhove. After several months of assaults, Ukrainian forces were forced to withdraw from the settlement of Popiv Yar in the Kramatorsk district, said Viktor Trehubov, spokesperson for the “Dnipro” Operational-Strategic Grouping of Troops. In the Siversk direction, the village of Ivano-Darivka also fell under occupation.

Shelling
One person was killed and three wounded during shelling of Dobropillia, Drobysheve, and Bilozerske in Donetsk region on August 17. Russian forces struck the settlements with “Geran-2” and FPV drones, regional prosecutor’s office spokesperson Anastasiia Medvedieva reported.

On August 16, police recorded 2,520 enemy strikes on the frontline and residential areas.

Seventeen settlements came under fire: the cities of Bilozerske, Dobropillia, Kostiantynivka, Lyman, Mykolaivka, Myrnohrad, Sloviansk; the towns of Novoselivka, Raiske, Sviatohorivka, Yarova; and the villages of Vesela Hora, Hryshyne, Zoloti Prudy, Krasnotorka, Myrove, Novoiavlenka.

Sixty-six civilian objects were damaged, including 51 residential buildings.

  • In Kostiantynivka, Russians carried out 11 strikes — killing one civilian, damaging an apartment building, two private houses, an administrative building, and four utility structures.

  • In Raiske, Druzhkivka community, two civilians were killed and one wounded after a “Smerch” MLRS strike and two “Geran-2” drone attacks. Twenty-four private houses were damaged.

  • In Sviatohorivka, Dobropillia community, two civilians were killed when a “Geran-2” drone struck a private house.

  • In Mykolaivka, a “Molniya-2” drone strike injured one civilian and damaged a trade pavilion.

  • Sloviansk was targeted with three “Geran-3” drones — one person was wounded, ten houses and a car were damaged.

  • In Bilozerske, a “KAB-250” bomb strike left one person injured and damaged two apartment buildings.

  • In Myrove, Bilozerske community, three “Geran-2” drones damaged two infrastructure facilities and a civilian car.

  • In Dobropillia, both an apartment building and a private house were damaged; in Myrnohrad, an apartment building; in Hryshyne, a private house.

  • In Krasnotorka, a “KAB-250” bomb damaged four private houses and one utility building.

  • In Vesela Hora, drone strikes damaged three private houses; in Novoiavlenka, one house was hit.

Other
Due to the shelling, more than 700 households in Raiske and Novohryhorivka (Donetsk region) were left without electricity, according to the Druzhkivka Military Administration.

Luhansk oblast

The enemy shelled the surrounding settlements and the fortifications of Ukrainian defenders with all available weapons. He carried out airstrikes and used multiple launch rocket systems and barrel artillery 26 times. More than 80 russian UAVs and FPV drones carried out combat missions.

The invaders made 32 attempts to attack towards Lyman, and two more towards Seversk.

The invaders promised to simplify the procedure for crossing the administrative border between the russian federation and the occupied Luhansk oblast back in September 2022 – following the results of a pseudo-referendum in the so-called “lpr”. Almost three years have passed since then, and trips outside the territory occupied by the Russians remain a continuous quest. Thorough checks continue at checkpoints.

Not much has changed in Lysychansk, which was occupied in the summer of 2022. russians don’t even do the showy mass painting of the facades of high-rise buildings there.

Moreover, in several areas of the city, electricity and water supply systems have still not been restored.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

In Kyiv oblast, pyrotechnic units of the State Emergency Service (SES) were honored for over three years of daily work related to clearing explosive ordnance. During this time, specialists have demined more than 36,000 hectares of land, including 7,500 hectares of agricultural fields.

At the Obukhiv City Council, a working meeting was held with representatives of the charitable organization Move Ukraine, which implements projects in the areas of social housing, employment, and rehabilitation for veterans and war-affected people. The discussion focused on expanding rehabilitation services in the Obukhiv rehabilitation module, as well as the possibility of signing a memorandum of cooperation.

In Kyiv, companies are developing advanced bionic upper-limb prostheses for people who lost their arms due to hostilities. Head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, Tymur Tkachenko, reported that these innovative technologies allow individuals to regain the ability to act, work, and live full lives even after severe injuries. Among such companies is the startup Esper Bionics, which uses artificial intelligence and cutting-edge technologies to create bionic prostheses. The company has already produced more than 350 modern prostheses for Ukrainians who lost limbs because of the war.

In Kyiv, veterans took to the sails. A regatta on the Dnipro gathered 25 combatants, according to the Kyiv City State Administration. The event was organized by the Kyiv Military Hub and the Kyiv City Cruising Yacht Club. The “Sails of the Free” initiative has been running since October 2023. Since then, veterans have regularly taken part in sailing, workshops, and introductory courses on yachting.

At Saint Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv, the eighth Bouquet Kyiv Stage high art festival opened — the fourth since the beginning of the full-scale invasion. The festival traditionally began with the memorial event “Red Viburnum”, honoring fallen artists. Two years ago, a symbolic viburnum bush was planted in the cathedral garden, where this commemorative ceremony is held annually during the festival.

Zhytomyr oblast

The Zhytomyr Regional State Administration reported on preparations for the new heating season. During 2024-2025, the oblast received 13 cogeneration plants, which allow simultaneous production of heat and electricity to improve the energy efficiency and reliability of the heat supply system.

Sumy oblast

On 17 August the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that in North Slobozhanske and Kursk fronts, Ukrainian troops repelled three assaults since the start of the day. Enemy forces also carried out 13 air strikes, dropping 26 guided bombs, and shelled Ukrainian positions and settlements 279 times, including 11 attacks by multiple launch rocket systems.

On 17 August  the General Staff informed that Ukrainian units achieved gains in the area of Yablunivka, Yunakivka community, advancing up to 1,000 metres. As of 16 August, Ukrainian advances in North Slobozhanske sector ranged from 1 to 2.5 kilometres, with active operations ongoing near Oleksiivka and Yunakivka.

From the morning of 16 August to the morning of 17 August, russian forces carried out up to 100 attacks on 46 settlements in 16 territorial communities of the oblast. The highest number of strikes was recorded in Sumy and Shostka regions. The enemy actively used guided aerial bombs (25 strikes), multiple launch rocket systems (up to 20 strikes), dropped VOG grenades from UAVs (up to 10 strikes), and also launched FPV-drones, UAVs, and a missile strike.

The consequences of russian strikes in Sumy oblast as of the morning of 17 August: in Sumy community, civilian infrastructure facilities were damaged; in Seredyna-Buda community, non-residential premises were damaged.

Over the past week, more than 60 people, including 11 children, have left border communities in Sumy oblast. According to the Regional Military Administration, since the beginning of the evacuation around 60,000 residents — 63% of those subject to evacuation — have relocated to safer areas, including more than 8,000 children.

Chernihiv oblast

The Regional State Emergency Service reported that on the morning of 17 August, russian drones attacked warehouses in two regions of Chernihiv oblast. In Koriukivka regions, storage buildings were damaged and a fire broke out over an area of about 20 m². In Novhorod-Siverskyi regions, a warehouse of about 100 m² caught fire. Firefighters promptly extinguished the blazes.

Chernihiv Border Detachment informed that during 17 August, russian forces attacked three border communities in Chernihiv oblast: Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka, and Snovsk. In total, russian strikes were recorded in nine settlements. The enemy carried out mortar shelling (6 explosions), strikes by Shahed-type UAVs (6 explosions), a Molniya-type UAV (1 explosion), FPV-drones (3 explosions), and dropped explosive devices from UAVs (20 explosions).

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of the oblast council, says that from evening until morning, the enemy continued to strike at Nikopol region. They struck with drones and fired with Grad MLRSs. They targeted Nikopol, Pokrovske, Myrove and Marhanets communities. There were fires. Cars were damaged.

According to updated information, 2 private houses were destroyed due to yesterday’s shelling in Nikopol, and 3 more were damaged.

The occupiers also attacked Synelnykove region. UAVs hit the Mezhova and Pokrovske communities. There were fires, a garage, private houses and infrastructure were damaged.

The enemy again attacked Nikopol and Synelnykove regions. The occupiers carried out more than two dozen strikes in Nikopol region. They struck with artillery and drones. They targeted Nikopol, Pokrovske, Myrove, Chervonohryhorivka and Marhanets communities. Fires broke out. 4 apartment buildings, 5 private homes, an enterprise, 2 outbuildings, a garage, a car and a power line were damaged. The occupiers also attacked Synelnykove region. They hit Pokrovske community with MLRSs, Mezhova community with a UAV, and Novopavlivka community with a GAB.

Vinnytsia region

Vinnytsia became a pilot city in Ukraine for the Unity in Every Step project, launched by Ukrainian volunteers in the UK together with the American Protest Foundation.

Cherkasy oblast

A memorial rally was organized in Cherkasy in honor of the first anniversary of the death of a foreign volunteer, Vasilii Kardav. He served in the 118th separate territorial defense brigade, was a reconnaissance operator. He died while performing a combat mission in Donetsk oblast.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Ivan Fedorov, Head of Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, reported that a 15-year-old boy was killed and 6 people, including 2 children, injured as a result of a russian attack on Novoiakovlivka in Zaporizhzhia oblast. The boy’s 12-year-old brother, 8-year-old sister and their parents (a 40-year-old father and a 36-year-old mother) were wounded. Also, 2 men, aged 41 and 51, were injured. According to preliminary information, russian forces attacked the settlement twice by aerial bombs. Several houses were damaged or destroyed.

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, on 16 August, in Orikhiv region, the Defence Forces of Ukraine repelled a russian assault in Stepnohirsk. In Huliaipole region, russian forces did not conduct offensive actions.

Ivan Fedorov, Head of the RMA, stated that on 16 August, russian forces carried out 505 strikes on 10 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast. In particular, 343 UAVs of various modifications (mostly FPVs) attacked Bilenke, Plavni, Huliaipole, Shcherbaky, Novodanylivka, Mala Tokmachka, Charivne and Malynivka.

Mykolaiv oblast

Based on the information provided by Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, on 16 August and overnight into 17 August, russian forces attacked the waters of Ochakiv community 7 times by FPV drones. On 16 August, the russian military twice attacked Kutsurub community by FPV drones. There were no injuries reported.

Odesa oblast

The Air Force reported that a reconnaissance UAV was detected in the morning over the Black Sea near Odesa oblast. Air defence assets were engaged to shoot it down.

Kherson oblast

Referring to Kherson RMA, today, the russian military attacked a 50-year-old resident of Novodmytrivka in Kherson oblast by a UAV. She sustained blast and craniocerebral injuries, a concussion and shrapnel wounds to her arm and leg.

At around 4:30pm, russian forces attacked Bilozirka in Kherson oblast by a drone. A 32-year-old man came under attack and sustained a mine-blast injury.

According to the State Emergency Service, on 16 August, in Kherson oblast, private houses and outbuildings caught fire as a result of russian shelling.

Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of the Regional Military Administration, reported that during the day, russian forces shelled 41 settlements in Kherson oblast. 2 private houses and a car were damaged. 2 people were injured.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

The Military Unit A7402 received a DJI Mavic 3T Enterprise (Thermal) quadcopter from Lutsk community.

Zakarpattia oblast

This week, the Owl’s Nest Humanitarian Aid Center provided IDPs registered in Uzhgorod with 50 bags with grocery sets, loaves of bread and 90 baby diapers. During the week, volunteers gave out clothes, shoes, bed linen and dishes (1,970 items) from the PDUM Partnerschaft Deutschland-Ukraine/Moldova e. V., Luftfahrt ohne Grenzen / Wings of Help e.V., Spletinnia Kosice, the religious community of the Reformed Church of Beregovo (Bulcha), Valentyn Stefanyo and other benefactors.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

At the fair, Prykarpattyaoblenerho raised UAH 95,000 for the 102nd Separate Territorial Defense Brigade, which is deployed in Ivano-Frankivsk oblast and is currently participating in active combat operations in Zaporizhia oblast.

Lviv oblast

From April to July this year, the largest number of people evacuated to the region from Donetsk, Zaporizhia, Kharkiv and Kherson oblasts. During this time, about 3,000 people used evacuation support in Lviv. Of these, 1,800 people were evacuated as part of an organized evacuation, and the rest were repeat arrivals. All of them received assistance at Lviv Main Railway Station.

Rivne oblast

The RMA reported that Kostopil community has allocated UAH 500,000 for the purchase of furniture and equipment for the Administrative Services Center of the Bereznyansk settlement community of Chernihiv oblast.

Ternopil oblast

9 families whose homes were damaged as a result of missile and UAV attacks on 25 May and 6 June, 2025, will be able to receive one-time cash assistance from the reserve fund of the community budget. In total, the city allocated UAH 2,54m for the restoration and support of Ternopil residents after these attacks, which were allocated to the owners of 157 apartments that suffered as a result of enemy attacks.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Khmelnytskyi community plans to build 2 additional family-type houses. Each house will house 8 children. These houses were evacuated to the community from the frontline areas.

Chernivtsi oblast

The RMA reported that the III degree For Courage Order (posthumously) was awarded to senior soldier Vasyl Katerenchuk.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Germany will allocate $500m for American weapons for Ukraine as part of the PURL initiative. The PURL mechanism is a joint development of the US Department of Defense and NATO, under which the Alliance will finance the supply of American weapons through voluntary contributions. Latvia, the Netherlands, Norway, Denmark and Sweden have already joined the initiative.
