On 20 September, russians did not stop trying to advance deeper into Ukrainian territory. The Defense Forces continued to fight the invaders, inflicting significant losses. The enemy acted most actively towards Kurakhove, where it carried out a third of all attacks.
There were 123 engagements on the front line.
The border vicinities of Sumy and Chernihiv oblasts continued to suffer from russian artillery shelling. Mykolaivka, Velyka Pysarivka, Riasne, Porozok, Luhivka, Pokrovka, Boyaro-Lezhachi, Brusky, and Lemishchyno were affected by artillery fire. russians also struck Luhivka twice with MLRS.
Towards Kharkiv, russian terrorists stormed the positions of Ukrainian units near Vovchansk, with two battles ongoing.
Towards Kupiansk, russians attacked Ukrainian positions seven times. Ukrainian defenders repelled enemy assaults near Stepova, Novoselivka, Synkivka, and Lozova, with five battles still continuing.

Towards Siversk, Ukrainian defenders successfully repelled an enemy attack near Vyiimka.

Towards Pokrovsk, russians made 21 attempts to displace Ukrainian defenders from their positions in the vicinities of Vozdvyzhenka, Novotoretske, Myroliubivka, Hrodivka, Chervone, Selidove, and Novohrodivka. The Defense Forces repelled 16 russian attacks, with five battles still ongoing.
The largest number of battles is recorded towards Kurakhove, where the invaders attacked Ukrainian units 40 times. russian forces tried to advance near Tsukuryne, Zhelane Pershe, Heorhiivka, Dalnie, Oleksandrivka, Katerynivka, and Kostyantynivka, with 10 assaults ongoing.
Towards Vremivka, the invaders unsuccessfully attacked Ukrainian positions eight times near Vuhledar, Prechystivka, and Bohoyavlenka.
Towards Orikhiv, the village of Piatykhatky was hit by unguided air missiles. russian units also unsuccessfully tried to advance towards Mala Tokmachka, Lobkove, and Novodanylivka.
The Defense Forces of Ukraine continue their operation towards Kursk region. russia’s aviation launched 21 airstrikes, dropping 27 guided bombs on the territory of russia.
The Ministry of Energy reported that the International Atomic Energy Agency is calling for the immediate withdrawal of russian servicemen and personnel from Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant and for the station to be returned to Ukrainian control. Until ZNPP is returned to Ukraine, russia must provide unrestricted access to all facilities and information at the plant.
According to its press service, Ukrzaliznytsia is launching Wi-Fi on high-speed trains. While test operations are ongoing, access to Wi-Fi will remain free for passengers.
Recent war events in the east of Ukraine
Kharkiv oblast
The Ukrainian Armed Forces General Staff reported that there were five combat engagements in Kupiansk oblast.
Towards Kupiansk, russians attacked seven times in total near Stepova Novoselivka, Synkivka and Lozova.
Towards Kharkiv, russians attacked twice near Vovchansk, both attacks repelled by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Towards Lyman, russia attacked eight times over the last day, in particular in the area of Cherneshchyna and Druzheliubivka.
The occupiers launched two attacks with multiple rocket launchers on the city of Kharkiv. According to preliminary data, they hit Slobidskyi and Osnovianskyi districts. At least three people were wounded in Osnovyanskyi district.
At around 14:00, the occupiers fired mortar shells at the village of Ivashky in Zolochiv community. As a result of seven shrapnel impacts, a couple who were tending to their garden during the shelling sustained shrapnel wounds, and their 69-year-old neighbour sustained a torn leg wound. The household and the car were damaged.
After 15:00, the occupiers struck Kivsharivka in Kupiansk region. Two civilians have been reported dead – a 43-year-old man and a 53-year-old woman – and at least two women were wounded.
At 8:00, in Shestakove village, Chuhuiv region, two people were injured and hospitalised as a result of the shelling of the farm with the RSVF. According to the RMA, they sustained shrapnel wounds. The regional rescue department said that the shelling also caused a fire of 500 square metres. The russian strike killed 20 animals and damaged the buildings of the enterprise. The fire has already been extinguished.
Oleksandr Kulik, Spokesman for Dergachi RMA, reports that russians attacked the border village of Kozacha Lopan with guided aerial bombs around 05:30,’ said.
The day before, at 22:00, Kupiansk – Vuzlovyi town, Kupyansk region was hit. The windows in an apartment building were damaged, a gas pipe was broken.
At 21:05, Novoosynove village, Kupiansk region, was shelled. As a result of the shelling, three cars and 2 outbuildings burned.
At 18:15, in Hrachivka village, Kupiansk region, two hostile UAVs hit a private household.
At 17:17, in Kindrashivka village, Kupiansk region, as a result of the shelling the grass was burning.
At 16:43, in the village of Vilcha, Chuhuiv region, an 85-year-old man was killed as a result of the shelling.
At 16:38, in the town of Kupiansk, a 65-year-old man was injured as a result of hostile shelling.
At 11:56, in Novoosynove village, Kupiansk region, an educational institution was shelled. As a result of the hit to the roof of the building there was a fire.
At 10:40, Novoosynove village, Kupiansk region, an outbuilding and a house were burning.
At 10:32, in Novoosynove village, Kupiansk region, as a result of the shelling the grass was burning.
Towards Kharkiv, three combat engagements took place in the vicinity of Vovchansk and Tykhyne.
Towards Kupiansk, the number of attacks was 13. Defence forces repelled enemy assaults near Sinkivka, Stelmakhivka and Hlushkivka.
Donetsk oblast
Oleksandr Ryasnyi, an officer with the 15th Kara-Dag Brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine, says that there are no russian troops in the town of Selidove towards Pokrovsk . Ukrainian troops stopped the russian army on the outskirts of the town, and fighting continues there.
Towards Pokrovsk, the russian military planned to cut Pokrovsk-Kostiantynivka road. The defence forces stopped them, so the russian army moved south to Ukrainsk and Selydove and changed its tactics. In particular, near Selydove, the russian military is circling the settlements in an attempt to cut them off, but is not engaged in large-scale contact fighting. Defence forces are also holding back attacks around Chasovyi Yar, Toretsk and Vovchansk.
Druzhkivka RMA reports that as a result of a direct hit to an apartment building in Druzhkivka, part of the building was destroyed and an apartment was smashed. Rescuers also extinguished a fire that started during the shelling.
The RMA informs that in the morning, russian troops struck the town of Pokrovsk in Donetsk oblast. The russian army hit private commercial facilities, and rescuers are extinguishing a fire at the site of the hit.

Anastasia Medviedieva, Spokeswoman for the regional prosecutor’s office, says that russian troops shelled Novoukrainka at 11:30 am and Toretsk at about 4 pm, three men were wounded.
In Selydove, police paramedics evacuated three people a few hundred metres from the frontline. The evacuation took place at an accelerated pace, as the situation was becoming more complicated every second: an enemy drone exploded in a neighbouring yard, a small arms battle was taking place in a nearby street, and shells were exploding nearby.

Four women aged 60 to 88 and a 57-year-old man were injured in the morning shelling of Kostiantynivka. They were diagnosed with mine-blast traumas and shrapnel wounds. The shelling with cannon artillery lasted from 9:50 to 10:25. Private buildings, seven facades of apartment buildings, trade pavilions, power lines, a gas pipeline, and cars were damaged.
At night, russia opened fire on 4 settlements. Two educational institutions were damaged in Bilytske and an infrastructure facility in Dobropillia. In Kramatorsk, 4 apartment buildings, an educational institution and an administrative building were damaged.
The day before, russians killed three residents of Donetsk oblast and wounded eight others. Over the past day, police documented 2,816 hostile attacks along the frontline and in the residential sector. 17 settlements were under fire. Fifty-eight civilian objects were damaged, including 43 residential buildings, a hospital, an educational institution, a shop, businesses and critical infrastructure.
Two civilians were killed in Chasiv Yar as a result of drone and artillery strikes, and a private house was damaged.
The occupiers shelled Kostiantynivka with Grad multiple rocket launchers and artillery, killing a man and damaging an apartment block and 15 private houses, power grids and gas pipelines.

The enemy attacked Kurakhove with three UMPC module bombs and artillery – a civilian was injured, an apartment block and 6 private houses, and a critical infrastructure facility were damaged.

Two people were wounded in Kurakhivka, two in Rivne, one in Zarichne and one in Serebrianka, which was attacked by a drone.
russians dropped three UAVs on Siversk and shelled the town with Grad rockets, damaging a hospital and an educational institution.
In Lyman, four apartment blocks were damaged by a Smerch attack. Two enterprises were damaged in Pokrovsk and nine households in Novoukrainka.

The stone statue was brought to Dnipro by volunteers from Donetsk oblast for temporary storage. Along with it, they managed to rescue other stone artefacts from the frontline region, including parts of a mill, tools from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and a two-metre-long limestone trough.
The city council reported that refugees from Kursk oblast were brought to Mariupol. The occupiers settled them in the homes of Mariupol residents who had left the city. Volunteers from the russian party distributed humanitarian aid to the refugees.
Luhansk oblast
In total, the occupiers fired more than 130 times at settlements and fortifications of Ukrainian defenders in Luhansk oblast. According to the Joint Forces Operation, artillery and drones prevailed. The enemy hit the villages of Makiivka and Balka Zhuravka. A total of 108 UAVs were sent there, 70 of which were directed towards Balka Zhuravka. Fighting took place near Stelmakhivka, Makiivka and Balka Zhuravka (formerly Nevske) yesterday.
For more than two years, the invaders have not repaired a single traffic light in Sievierodonetsk or installed new ones. Traffic in the city remains unregulated. Representatives of the local occupation authorities admit that they cannot solve this problem. ‘Specialists’ from Perm have allegedly conducted a survey and ordered design and estimate documentation. They promise to install the first traffic lights in two more years – in 2026.
Also, for two years now, a project to build six all-russian landfills on the territory of the so-called ‘lpr’ has been in the works only in words. During this period, the exact location of one of them has only been determined and 160 million rubles have been promised for the project. The plan is to bring garbage there from both the occupied territories and neighbouring regions of russia. They plan to bring 350,000 tonnes annually. In the meantime, the occupiers have limited themselves to establishing a headquarters for resolving issues in the field of solid municipal waste management, whose task is to leave the solution of this problem at the regional level.
What is happening now in the north of Ukraine
Kyiv oblast
Ruslan Kravchenko, head of Kyiv Regional Military Administration, reported that at night the enemy attacked Kyiv oblast with attack drones. There were no hits to residential or critical infrastructure and no casualties.
Grass flooring caught fire as a result of falling debris from downed targets in two districts.
Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, arrived in Kyiv. She intends to discuss Europe’s support for Ukraine, including preparing for winter, defence, EU membership and progress on G7 loans. Ursula von der Leyen paid tribute to the fallen defenders of Ukraine at the Wall of Remembrance on Saint Michael’s Square in Kyiv.

Kyiv City Military Administration announced that defenders from Kyiv who were injured in the fighting will receive a one-time financial assistance of UAH 45,000. The initiative was supported by members of the Kyiv City Council.
Kyiv RMA signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with the Bokarius Institute of Forensic Expertise. The document envisages cooperation between the institutions in the fields of science, education and forensic science. At the moment, experts from the institute are involved in the multi-level control over the construction of fortifications introduced by Kyiv oblast.
The majority of deputies at a meeting of Kyiv City Council supported the decision to rename eight more capital objects in the process of de-russification and decommunisation.
The RMA reported that Washington, DC, a sister state of Kyiv, will assist in the development of women’s entrepreneurship. A series of virtual conferences will be organised for Ukrainian businesswomen, where leading American experts will share strategies and tools for entrepreneurship in the face of modern realities and challenges.
The Battle for Light installation was opened on Kontraktova Square in Kyiv. A power transformer that burned down as a result of a russian missile attack in March 2024 was installed there, and facts about the power system and statistics were written on the asphalt near it. DTEK explained that the aim of the project was to convey the scale of destruction in the Ukrainian energy sector.

Zhytomyr oblast
The Regional Military Administration reported that 26 IDP councils are successfully operating in Zhytomyr oblast. In total, 58,000 internally displaced people live in the oblast, including more than 15,000 children.
Active work is underway to build production facilities in the Ma’Ryzhany industrial park in Khoroshiv territorial community. Vitalii Bunechko, head of Zhytomyr Regional Military Administration, said that despite the full-scale russian invasion, investors are creating a base to restore the production of natural fibres for various industries. Thanks to modern technologies, the park aims to become one of the largest producers of hemp fibre in Europe.
On 19 September, Zhytomyr hosted an art event, Art Community ‘Creativity is part of our resilience’, as a part of the nationwide mental health programme ‘Are you OK?’. The event united the region’s residents around art as an important element in restoring and strengthening psychological resilience.
Veterans and athletes from Zhytomyr oblast took part in the Dragon Boat World Championships in Italy. The team, which included 12 veterans with disabilities, won the Paradragon class.
Sumy oblast
According to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SES), on the morning of 20 September, the russian army struck one of the settlements in Sumy oblast. As a result of the attack, a building of a farming enterprise caught fire. Firefighters successfully extinguished the blaze. Preliminary reports indicate that there were no injuries.
During night and morning, russians carried out 25 shelling attacks on border areas and settlements in Sumy oblast, resulting in 38 explosions. The attacks targeted Mykolaivka, Khotin, Bilopillia, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Hlukhiv, Esman, Shalyhyne, Druzhbivka, Svessa communities.
During the day, 19 September, russians carried out 63 shelling attacks on border areas and settlements in Sumy oblast, resulting in 141 explosions. The attacks targeted Sumy, Mykolaivka, Khotin, Yunakivka, Myropillia, Bilopillia,Richky, Krasnopillia, Trostianets, Velyka Pysarivka, Putyvl, Nova Slobidka, Hlukhiv, Esman, Shalyhyne, Druzhbivka, Svessa and Seredyna-Buda communities.

During the day, russian forces attacked eight villages in three border communities in Chernihiv oblast: Novhorod-Siverskyi, Snossa and Semenivka. The fire was carried out using artillery and mortars, and drones were also used to drop explosives from UAVs. In total, border guards recorded 85 explosions.

No casualties or injuries among the local population were reported as a result of the shelling.
Nizhyn City Council reported that on 19 September, Nizhyn Central City Hospital received 15 charging stations. As part of the USAID DOBRE Program’s Emergency Response Project 6 (Winterization 2024-2025), Nizhyn community received 15 powerful charging stations with a capacity of up to 2100 Wh. The assistance will ensure uninterrupted power supply to the hospital for performing urgent surgeries even during blackouts.
Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine
Dnipropetrovsk oblast
Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Council, reported that last night, the occupiers continued to attack Nikopol region. They attacked with kamikaze drones and artillery. They attacked Nikopol, Marhanets and Chervonohryhorivka communities. In the morning, the enemy attacked Marhanets community with ‘hail’ and sent a kamikaze drone to Nikopol.
During the day, on 20 September, the enemy attacked Nikopol more than two dozen times. They attacked with kamikaze drones, artillery, and dropped ammunition from drones. A 48-year-old man was injured. The occupants were targeting Nikopol, Pokrovske, Myrove, Marhanets and Chervonohryhorivka communities. A multi-storey building, a private house, infrastructure and petrol stations were damaged. According to the updated information, the morning attack on Nikopol resulted in the destruction of 2 multi-storey buildings, 3 private houses, 4 outbuildings, one more was destroyed and a greenhouse was damaged.

Vinnytsia oblast
Living conditions for internally displaced persons are being improved in Vinnytsia oblast. During the inspection, several dormitories and social institutions were found to have made significant changes, including creating space for children, installing a water filtration system and arranging a gym.
In Vinnytsia oblast, 6 families of fallen defenders received state awards ‘For Courage’ of the third degree.
Kirovohrad oblast
Andrii Raikovych, Head of Kirovohrad RMA, announced that at night, air defence was working in Kirovohrad oblast to repel an air attack by the russian army.
Cherkasy oblast
Ihor Taburets, Head of Cherkasy Regional Military Administration, reported that in Cherkasy oblast, 13 russian UAVs were shot down. In two cases, the falling wreckage caused fires in the forest.
Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine
Zaporizhzhia oblast
Yesterday, russian forces launched 288 attacks on 13 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast. russian troops carried out 6 airstrikes on Zaporizhzhia, Komyshuvakha, and Kamianske. 110 drones of various modifications attacked Stepnohirsk, Huliaipole, Novoandriivka, Robotyne, Mala Tokmachka, Levadne, Malynivka, and Shcherbaky. There were 10 MLRS strikes on Huliaipole, Zaliznychne, Robotyne, Mala Tokmachka, Preobrazhenka, and Novoandriivka. Additionally, 162 artillery strikes targeted Huliaipole, Novoandriivka, Robotyne, Mala Tokmachka, Malynivka, Levadne, and Preobrazhenka. There were 45 reports of damage to residential buildings and infrastructure.
It is reported that the occupiers attacked Piatykhatky with unguided aerial rockets. russian units also unsuccessfully attempted to advance towards Mala Tokmachka, Lobkove, and Novodanilivka.
As a result of russian shelling two fires broke out in Polohy region. A house caught fire in Huliaipole, and dry grass ignited in the village of Preobrazhenka.
Police evacuated a 72-year-old woman from the frontline city of Orikhiv, who was living alone in an apartment building. The woman had been residing on the outskirts of Orikhiv, just 5 km from the front line. She was relocated to a hostel for internally displaced persons in Zaporizhzhia, where she can safely spend the winter in comfortable conditions.
Mykolaiv oblast
On the night of 20 September, air defense forces destroyed six Shahed 131/136 drones over Mykolaiv oblast.
Yesterday, on 19 September, the enemy attacked Kutsurub community twice using FPV drones. There were no casualties.
Odesa oblast
Today, the enemy launched a missile attack on Odesa. Debris, presumably from an Iskander-M missile, damaged port and civilian infrastructure, as well as a civilian vessel flying the Antigua flag. Four civilians were injured.
As of 6 a.m. on 20 September, one enemy vessel carrying Kalibr cruise missiles with a total salvo of up to four missiles was present in the Black Sea. There were five enemy ships in the Mediterranean Sea, four of which were carrying Kalibr cruise missiles with a total salvo of up to 32 missiles.
Over the past 24 hours, nine ships passed through the Kerch Strait into the Black Sea in the interests of russia, and five ships entered the Azov Sea.
In Odesa, a meeting was held with Michael Thielen, Secretary General of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, and Thomas Birringer, Head of the Foundation’s Office in Ukraine. The discussions focused on key development issues in Odesa oblast, including energy security, infrastructure recovery, and new opportunities for communities on their path toward European integration. Additionally, agreements were reached to support the region’s communities in the context of European integration.
Kherson oblast
Today, at 11:20, russian forces shelled the Dnipro district of Kherson. As a result of the attack, a 27-year-old man who was outside at the time suffered fatal injuries.
Around 10:30, russian troops used a drone to attack a vehicle in Kherson, leaving a 60-year-old man with a blast injury and multiple shrapnel wounds to his head, torso, arms, and legs.
Two people were injured in Kindiika by explosives dropped from a russian drone while they were on the street. The men, aged 62 and 64, sustained blast injuries and shrapnel wounds to their legs.
This morning, russians used artillery to attack Tomyna Balka, damaging at least three homes. Last night, the village of Blahovishchenske was attacked, injuring two people.
Yesterday, Antonivka, Sadove, Inzhenerne, Komyshany, Prydniprovske, Dniprovske, Veletenske, Pryozerne, Mykilske, Dariivka, Novovorontsovka, Novoberyslav, Zmiivka, and the city of Kherson were under enemy fire and airstrikes. The attacks damaged critical infrastructure, residential areas, including five apartment buildings and 14 private houses, and three private vehicles. Five people were injured due to russian aggression.

According to the report from the South Operational Command, russian invaders attacked Ukrainian positions three times on the Prydniprovskyi front. The invaders’ losses amounted to 88 personnel over the past day. Ammunition depots, 12 dugouts, two observation posts, and two firing positions were destroyed.
More than 30,000 objects were damaged or completely destroyed due to russian aggression since the beginning of the full-scale invasion in Kherson oblast. According to Oleksandr Prokudin, the head of the regional military administration, russian shelling and attacks have primarily damaged residential areas, including more than 27,000 private houses and 1,200 apartment buildings.
It is reported that russian forces are systematically shooting stray dogs in the temporarily occupied territories, especially in abandoned villages where their population has grown due to the fighting. Instead of vaccinating the animals, the russians are resorting to culling.

The key motto of the forum is helping Ukrainian children in the conditions of the ongoing war in Ukraine, the importance of the role of volunteering and its help to Ukraine.
Ivano-Frankivsk oblast
In the morning, the Air Defense Forces worked in Prykarpattia during the air alert. There were no injuries or damage.
Lviv oblast
During the air alert, which lasted in Lviv oblast from 03:56am to 04:32am, on 20 September one enemy attack drone flew into the airspace of the oblast. The Air Defense Forces West destroyed it. A fire broke out in one of the villages of the oblast as a result of the fall of the UAV debris around 04:30am. The premises of the former collective farm caught fire. Firefighters promptly extinguished the fire. 20 firefighters and 4 units of special equipment were involved. Three cars were damaged (1 truck and 2 cars), windows were broken in residential buildings nearby. There are no victims or injured.
From Lviv city budget, 77 windows and 19 entrance doors in residences that were damaged by a russian missile strike on 4 September this year were allocated for restoration. And they also agreed on 2 compensations for the residents of apartments flooded as a result of extinguishing fires.
Rivne oblast
The Air Defense Forces worked at night in Rivne oblast. An aerial enemy target was shot down. No infrastructure damage was recorded. People were not injured.
114 Safety Classrooms operate in Rivne oblast. The last 2 locations opened their doors this week in Dubrovytsk community, Sarnen region. They were created in Seletskyi and Zaluzskyi lyceums.
Ternopil oblast
Ternopil community sent 2 interactive panels, 3 computers, monitors and laptops to the soldiers of the Special Operations Forces thanks to the budget funds.
The RMA reported that in Ternopil, 11 servicemen were awarded the III degree Order of Courage and the Order of the Fallen Warrior (posthumously).
Khmelnytskyi oblast
The RMA reported that during the night attack, a flight of a Russian attack UAV of the Shakhed type was recorded in the immediate vicinity of Khao NPP.
The RMA reported that military exercises took place within Khmelnytskyi community.
Chernivtsi oblast
Employees of the Centers for the provision of social services of Ostrytsk, Hertsaivsk and Berehomet communities received 6 bicycles from the Stabilization Support Services CF. At the end of January 2024, the Department of Social Protection of the Population of Chernivtsi Oblast signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with him. Bicycles will be driven by specialists who, specifically, provide the Care at Home social service.
International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)
Germany sent a new aid package to Ukraine. The new military aid package includes: 22 Leopard tanks and spare parts for them; 22 MRAP mine-protected vehicles; 5 tracked all-terrain vehicles Bandvagn, all-terrain vehicle Warthog; 3 Gepard anti-aircraft self-propelled artillery installations; 2 TRML-4D radars; 61 thousand 155-mm artillery ammunition; 30 VECTOR reconnaissance drones; 20 RQ-35 Heidrun UAVs; 12 Songbird UAVs; 6 Hornet XR UAVs; 20 surface drones and 3 BIBER armoured vehicles.
Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, reported that the EU has an energy aid plan for Ukraine. The 1st stage of the plan involves the repair of damaged Ukrainian energy facilities. The 2nd stage includes the support of Ukraine’s energy system by imports from Europe and the development of a decentralised network.
The European Union provides a €35bn loan to Ukraine. The loan is provided within the framework of the obligations of the G7 countries.
The remaining $5.8bn in aid to Ukraine will be used. The US Department of Defense wants through Congress to extend the presidential term of Joe Biden regarding the allocation of all remaining funds for military support to Ukraine after the end of the fiscal year at the end of September.
